LA Area Geeks! It’s Time To Spend Some Time In The Dark With Patton Oswalt At The New Beverly!

Published at:  Sep 30, 2008 3:31:27 PM CDT

Hey, everyone. “Moriarty” here.

Goddamn, I love the New Beverly Theater.

It’s always been a great venue with a lovely scuzzy grindhouse vibe to it, but in the last year and a half, it’s really come on strong with some very cool mini-festival programming. Having filmmakers take over the theater to run these series is a great idea, and I’ve enjoyed the hell out of evenings programmed by Eli Roth, Edgar Wright, Diablo Cody, and Joe Dante so far.

This weekend, starting on October 3rd, Patton Oswalt is stepping up for his turn at bat, and he’s put together a very eclectic list. I’ve known Patton for about a decade now, and he’s as pure a film freak as I know, a guy who just plain gets excited by movies of all types. He’s got very particular tastes, but he’s not a snob. Like most of my best film geek buddies, he can appreciate high art and trash cinema with equal fervor, knowing that they are what they are, and never insisting that one is better than the other.

Believe me... this is a chance to see some really unusual pairings of movies, and each one of these nights sounds rewarding. I’m going to see how many of the nights I can make it down there for, starting with that awesome Walter Matthau double-feature. CHARLEY VARRICK on the bigscreen? I’ll take two tickets for awesome, please.

Here’s the full line-up, and I hope you guys will join Patton so we can see more programming from him in the future:

Now I can’t wait to see who else the New Bev has lined up for future festivals. Keep ‘em coming, Julia!

Great programming--how about the print quality?

    by sherman_lives

I went to the Flight of the Navigator/Explorers double-feature on Sunday (thanks, IGN!) and while it was cool to get a Q&A with Flight director Randal Kleiser, the condition of the print must have made him a little uncomfortable, especially compared to the archival print of Explorers they played, ready for Joe Dante's attendance the next day. I'm just saying sometimes it's hit-and-miss at the New Bev.

    I love "Charlie Varrick"

That is a perfect movie. There is not one bad shot, bad performance or one bad line of dialogue. It never got the respect it deserves.

Hear, hear on Charley Varrick,it doesn't matter how many tmes i've seen it my jaw still drops when he pulls that secretary, she has got to be the easiest lay ever put on film.
Its also worth noting Joe Don Bakers performance,he is the ultimate badass in that film.
Oswalt happened to write a piece on "Blast of Silence" for Ed Brubakers "Criminal".

Again. Can someone please explain to me the enjoyment to be had with, The Foot Way First? And why Danny R. McBride is the funniest thing since Carrot Top? I mean the dude was in every comedy this summer, it was like he was in a race against Seth Rogen. Don't get me wrong I don't hate the guy, I just don't see him as the second coming of comedy like every comedian does right now. He's mildly funny in his bit parts (though I think Bill Hader is stealing some of that thunder), but foot way first was MEH? It had some funny parts but for the most part was boring. I know my lady friend thought he was the funniest part of Tropic Thunder, the first time (RDJ took the top spot second viewing), so maybe its a chick thing. I really don't hate the guy, but I just wonder if these comedians efforts to pimping him couldn't be put to better use trying to find Dave Chappelle or getting Doug Benson off of Best Week Ever and on to the TV or in the movies some how.

I've never heard of this movie. Is it a prequel to The Foot Fist Way?

Fuck it, let's pitch this movie!

    by gavdiggity

I agree that Doug Benson should get more work. I gotta say, though, that I thought Danny McBride was the best part of Pineapple Express, and I thought he was really good in Tropic Thunder. I haven't seen Foot Fist Way yet, but Patton seems to think it's amazing, so I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.
