Dunst Confirms Involvement In SPIDER-MAN 4, Keeps Mum On Villains (For Now)!

Published at:  Sep 30, 2008 1:55:21 PM CDT

Beaks here...

Good news for the geek press: our most reliable source for SPIDER-MAN scoops is returning for the fourth installment!

I'm aware that many fans have developed an intense loathing for Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson (one talk backer to Harry's SPIDER-MAN 3 review eloquently opined that she "looks like a foot"), but I think think she's been... reasonably effective in the role. Though Raimi didn't do her any favors by opening the last installment with her tentative warbling of "They Say It's Wonderful" (whatever happened to voice doubles?), I thought the rest of her performance was fine. It's not like she wrote the hopelessly cluttered script or anything.

MTV Movies got Kirsten Dunst to spill the beans regarding her involvement in the fourth movie, but she stopped short of giving away any other details - even though she acknowledges that there are some "rumors" out there. Perhaps she's referring to Nikki Finke's "expect another gal part" remark from earlier this month. Felicia Hardy anyone?

Despite the disappointment of SPIDER-MAN 3, I think the fourth film is in good hands with screenwriter Jamie Vanderbilt. Here's hoping he gets the franchise back on track.

Raimi was the only person involved who seemed like he actually gave a crap about the material, but considering how reluctant he seemed to get back on board after number 3., even his involvment here screams 'paycheck!' Which of course is a bad sign.

It's not 'realistic' enough. I loved them, don't get me wrong. But a new direction, with more action and less camp, would generate more excitement. Everyone's still sore over Spiderman 3 to trust Raimi. Some will say he learned from his mistakes, but i wish he'd learn from the old "Superman" films and stop before he ends up with "Nuclear Man."

    by fartedinthefaceofhollywood

its odd...i found Dunst to be very attractive in Spider Man 1...but in 2 and 3 she looked "different", her face looked funnier than usual, a little...i dont know...deflated???..maybe (shes attractive...just not a knock-out). im not sick of Dunst as Mary Jane, im sick of how they are handling Mary Jane...she is overly whiney, always falling off of ledges screaming bloody murder, and seemingly shes been on the RAG since the beginning of the 2nd film as she deems it necessary to get in Peters shit WAY too often...and the love story in 3 felt like the one 2 only with more corn-in-the-crap. I agree with who-ever it was that said this series needs a break. besides, out of all the villains left for him to fight...Carnage seems like the only one with enough "presence" and "cool-factor" to be considered a worthy villain for him...i mean, after fighting Green Goblin, Doc Oc, Sandman, and Venom...i think it would be rather dull to see him chase a humanoid-lizard around...or this "Vulture" guy.

Glad she stuck to her guns. She was so vocal about never doing another Spider-Man movie as long as she lived.

I guess it's tougher to follow through on promises like that when your career's in the dumper.

The one thing I was looking forward to about this was a new Mary Jane. I hate celebrities who whine.

Also, that talk-backer eloquently ripped-off Family Guy with the "looks like a foot" joke. And the original joke was about Sarah Jessica Parker, so it made sense. Kirsten Dunst doesn't look like a foot.

Spidey 3 still gets a bad rap

    by blanket-man

People act like it was an awful abortion of a film, yet it got a respectable over-60% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The first half was damned good; the Peter/Harry fight was maybe the 2nd-coolest battle in the whole series. And Sandman and the Stacys were a nice addition, at least until the finale when he turned into Construction-Debris Giant (who Spidey lets get away!!!). I enjoyed Grace's Brock/Venom, even though he was way under-developed. I agree that, for the most part, the script was a mess, especially the third act. But it still had a lot of positives going for it that we geeks don't seem to appreciate for some reason... It's more fun to just call it COMPLETE SHIT, I guess.

Electro, Mysterio, Venom (but NO Topher!), the Vulture... all are great villains, but... Raimi, you better throw the Rhino into the mix, too dammit! And do it right this time... no goddamn "misunderstood" villains who just want to share a good cry with Spidey, then drift away into the wind. And goddammit, fix the origin story (Uncle Ben's death). None of this "Sandman did it, but he apologized" shit! (WTF was THAT all about, anyway?)

As far as I'm concerned, the 3rd movie never really happened. I think Raimi should follow suit and simply retcon movie 3 out of existence. . .it was a poorly executed mish-mash of concepts that had no development and no coherence whatsoever. That said, the Kraven vs. Lizard/Connors idea that someone mentioned earlier sounds amazing. The suggestion of Viggo Mortenson as Kraven also sounds amazing--although I can't imagine him being buff enough for the Kraven role.

Why does everyone always blame Rami for Spider-Man 3? He was always very vocal about liking the old school villians and how much he hated the character of Venom. He never wanted Venom in the movie. Why don't you blame the people who really deserve it, Avi Arad and the suits a Sony that forced Venom on Rami and into the movie? If Rami would have had his way the only villian would have been Sandman and the movie would have been very different.

There would be absolutely nothing wrong with that.Venom, on the other hand, could be done right (not sure about being done justice, though, as the character appeals to me strictly on an aesthetic level. Marvel's wondrous storytelling of the early nineties ruined my infatuation with their Universe for year. But I digress...)Give him a solid backstory (obviously no Secret Wars) and see what happens. But that would require a reboot or a retelling or a reimagining on the big screen. I'd rather see Mysterio or the Tarantula than another cinematic Brock. DTV cg-toon, anyone? The only way to improve the franchise is to start over. period.

    by industrykiller!

Let's face it guys, the Spider Man films were never very good. The first one is alright, despite rushing of the Green Goblin story and the lack of Gwen Stacy, but, despite popular belief, the second film was just a terrible watering down of the Mary Jane/Parker dynamic and Doc Ock basically being worthless and shoehorned in. Spider Man 3 is Batman and Robin awful and silly. people who like that film are phillistines who clearly dont even have a tenuous grasp on how to tell a good story. there is no coming back from something that fucking awful.

tobey macguire play Parker as the most nebbishly dweeby dweeb that ever dweebed and thats just a gross mischaracterization. Parker hasnt been an uber dweeb in like 35 years of the comic. moreover he completely loses the playful sense of confidence and sarcasm Parker has when he is actually Spider Man.

Kirsten Dunst is just terrible. Yeah she doesn't look anything like Mary jane and all that, but she doesnt act like her either. Its just square peg in round hole casting. Dunsts Mary jane comes of as needy and whiny which are completely opposite to how MJ should be portrayed. While she doesnt like that Peter has to be Spider man, she understands, and has been his rock throughout their relationship.

then there is raimis penchant for wasting villains, which Dark Knight proved inarguably are every bit as important as the heroes, and sometimes moreso. And with Spider Man you have maybe the best rogues gallery in the history of comics, wasting them is inexcusable.

    What Spider-Man really needs...

    by seanny_d

is some more Batman. Maybe throw Batman in there as a cameo. And then have him be Batman's sidekick for a while (part 5 maybe?) and then Mary Jane could become the new Joker. Which would be awesome. And then you'd have a Batman vs. Spider-Man movie in 2014 with Superman as a referee. But then the Hulk comes and destroys everything. And have Tony Stark "Where's Waldo" style getting drunk at the match. I should write this movie.

Imagine all of the critical raves Spider-Man 4 would get with this addition. Don't forget the Nick Fury cameo after the end credits, but the twist could be that Peter hooks up with She Hulk and they moved next door to crazy neighbor Nick played by Samuel L. Jackson.

What in the fuck? My memory has blotted out most things about Spiderman 3, so I don't remember seeing this "fat ass", but in my experience a FAT ASS is a thing of beauty when applied to a nice hip-to-waist ratio. A woman who is a fatass and who HAS a fat ass are two entirely different things, the latter being something that is preferred, not complaint-worthy...As for Spiderman 4... bring in THE MOTHERFUCKING KINGPIN. They've included Dr. Connors in the first three movies, why not just pull the trigger and give us The Lizard? The whole film could be a man-hunt type of scenario, with Doc. Connors transforming early in the movie and Spidey trying to track him down in NYC as the Lizard goes on a rampage. Ditch the Peter/MJ soap opera for the film, more J.K. Simmons and several fights between Spidey and the Lizard. That would work for me.

As long as the actor who plays Kraven can pull it off both in appearance and in performance, then I think that would be pretty fuckin' sweet to have that particular menage trois. Kraven would work if the character was allowed a little more moral ambiguity than villains are usually provided. I'd love to see the duality of a proud, noble character whose biggest fault is that his moral compass is not aligned with our society. Also, Spidey has this dilemma in dealing with Doc. Connors. On one hand, the Lizard is a danger and he has to be stopped, but on the other Spidey knows who he really is and has that desire to help him. If done right, then that conundrum would play well and provide the dramatic basis for the movie when those three aren't kicking the living shit out of each other.

Although negotiating a CGI/make-up heavy character like Lizzy onto the big screen would be a difficult task. I figure after Spidey 3, Raimi will probably try anything, though. Anyway, I could see The Leezard as the sympathetic villain, and Kraven as the complete douchebag #2 villain. Talk about keepin' it old school. Maybe if Felicia Hardy is introduced in this one, she has some connection to Kraven.

    Dunst just isn't attractive enough

    by cedar_room

I mean how about the scene where Peter is walking past a wall of posters with her face on - is that even remotely believable? Is it remotely believable that she was the hottest girl in high school who Peter thought was way out of his league? That she is so good looking she has become a model/actress sensation?? I mean NONE of it rings true. Gwen Stacy was a 1000 times hotter and made it a farce that MJ is even considered hot in the Spider Man universe. I just never buy the relationship because MJ is very much in Peter's league therefore none of that dynamic ever works. Its has consistently been the weakest link in the whole series. BUT - if she were somehow to DIE in SM4 then I would quite happily see Dunst return. Otherwise, lets have no more of the whinyness, and the idea that she's on of NY's hottest girls. Fuck. Right. Off.

Am I the only person kinda looking forward to Spidey 4?

    by mr writer

Spider-Man 1 was good, but I hated the Green Goblin's power ranger suit and the CGI was very poor at times. I thought Spider-Man 2 was fantastic and right up there with Superman The Movie and X2 as one of the best comics-to-films. Spidey 3 was a mess, but there was a lot of good in there. The first 45mins or so with Sandman's origin are good, but trying to shoehorn the Venom storyline in there AND the new goblin plot too was a big, big mistake. It was three movies crammed into one with some very odd scenes (like Disco Pete), which just felt totally out of place.

I know everyone is bashing Dunst, but I don't have a problem with her really. Is she the perfect MJ? No. Is she gorgeous to everyone? Clearly not. But she's definitely an attractive woman. Just not everyone's type. I thought she looked hot in Spidey 1 and in parts of Spidey 2, personally, but I'll admit she can look a bit tired and pale and not nearly as attractive as usual on occasion (Maybe she doesn't take care of herself in real life-who knows?).

As for new villains - Well, it'd be great to see some of the classics like Lizard, Vulture, Rhino, Electro, Kraven, etc, but if there are any new villains I think they will only be cameos. I predict the return of Norman Osborn in Spidey 4 - brought back to life by the Goblin formula and hellbent on revenge for the death of his son. That's why one of the producers said as soon as they revealed the villain you'd know who was playing him - its Willem Dafoe of course (who was excellent in the first movie).

Osborn could work from the shadows, manipulating other villains to take on Spidey such as those mentioned above. Hopefully he'll ditch the power ranger costume too and use something more in keeping with the comic book version. I've recently been reading Thunderbolts and I love Warren Ellis' depiction of Norman Obsorn as a schitzophrenic who keeps a Goblin mask in his drawer and talks to it.

Also if the Green Goblin returns you can have the death of Gwen Stacy. If they are talking about doing Spidey 4 and 5 back to back it has to be a major villain/storyline and a reborn Goblin (with a visual overhaul for the new movie) would work. Maybe they could go down the Ultimate Spider-Man route of having Osborn actually transform into a Hulk-like creature.

    Kraven, The Lizard, and MJ

    by donquixote

Oh, thank God. For a minute there, I was afraid that the Peter-MJ on-again-off-again story was going to be put aside. Nothing against Dunst, but for the love of God, move it on to Gwen or Betty or some other relationship that was vital in the Spidey canon. I did a quick scan of the talkbacks and I see that Vic Twenty mentioned Kraven hunting the Lizard, which is what I've also thought for awhile would make a fun story. And I'm sure this is too spot-on casting, but wouldn't Ian McShane make a fine Kraven? I'd be just as pleased to see Mysterio, Electro, or most any of the other vintage bad guys. Loved Spidey 1 & 2. The third, sad to say, had its fun moments but was fairly tedious going with too many ingredients vying for time. I'd love to see Raimi be "redeemed" with a fourth great installment.

You make some good points. i don't hate Dunst as much as others, but they did introduce her way too soon. I would like too see Rhino and/or Electro show up, but unfortunatly I don't see them holding up an interesting "movie" on their own. Bringing back Norman Osborn would be a mistake no matter who plays him. I know alot of people like Vulture but I always thought of him as a fill in villian. Kraven, on the other hand, is probably the most realistic opponent for Spider-man. Too be honest though, I don't see him carrying an entire film. Unless you go full circle with his suicide, which (be honest) will never see the big screen. If they really want to catch people off guard, bring in Morbius and a six armed Spidey. That would really catch everyone off guard

Spiderman one won my adoration with its geektastic revival of the dead superhero movie, what followed was a little excessive, but I really cant complain too much. Still a little pissed about Daredevil, ghostrider, XMen 3, and soon to be about Wolvernine. The point is Spiderman was not good, it was a shitty movie that passed as good because the effects were new and a lot of people just love the character Spiderman. Spiderman 2 was a decent movie, a little bit lame on plot, bbut a pretty damn good film. The last movie, my God, what a travesty, I wasted a decent portion of my life following the development of that film all to see a movie that somehow bored me. Bruce Campbell as Mysterio should get the franchise back on track as long as they don't have the bad guy repent at the end of the movie and change sides like SM2 & 3 or try to do the Spidey version of Dark Knight like SM3. Just let spidey be spidey and make sure he has a lot of good wise ass one-liners during the fight scenes.

don't forget her heartbreaking performance in The Virgin Suicides. Not bad in Dick, either. The movie. With Michelle Williams (no jokes please). I think Spidey fans are waaaay too hard on her as well. I do hope they rework her character somewhat. We need a strong, sexy MJ - just as much as we need a confident, wise-crackin' Spidey. No more emo-boy, no more mopey whiney girl. Make them the power couple they were meant to be. Just as long as she doesn't do his laundry in a thong. Well, maybe...if done tastefully.

Raimi, Tobey and Foot all did fine-ish, but c'mon! A fresh perspective and cast would shake all the spiderwebs free and we could get some sweet, stylin', Excelsior!-ish flair in there. The comic series changes writers and artists, so should the next movie.

    by slugbat

After the first one, when everyone should have realized it was horribly mis-cast, way too campy and the director was a homo (yeah, I'm a homophobe). Godammit, what is wrong with you enabling retards? You're the ones who cheered as Asians were singing that camptarded Spidey theme song and tobey's crotch was being hoisted in honor by somber New Yorkers in a subway car covered in Spidey-splooge, all the while the series was inexorably careening towards Spiderman 3 -- IT WAS YOU WHO ENABLED RAIMI to pursue his homo-emo vision that he kept hinting at in the first two!
All the praise for that overrated bag of shit, Spiderman 2...it was a terrible time to be a fan of comics. Thankfully we have a slightly overrated, though homo/emo indulgence-free comic book adaptation to serve as an oasis in the madness! You and I shall dance together one more time, TDK!

    by charlie & tex

Dunst should be excluded from the franchise, not just for having a face shaped like a dinner-plate, or that she nixed MJ's red hair during the sequels, but did anyone notice her shitty, bratty attitude during the promotion of Spider-Man 3? In the UK, she was being interviewed by a pretty hip host of a show on Channel 4, who asked her a question about her character, being one relating to a key instance in Spider-Man lore - to which she replied with a very cutting: "Do you, like, live with your Mom?"

With so many actresses out there who could make a better MJ, this is a pretty shitty attitude for someone who was given success & recognition on a plate (face). Bitch!

Beaks you can't bring up Elizabethtown with a straight face

    by industrykiller!

That movie is terrible, and that Crowe has been so reticent to wade back into the directing pool is proof enough. You could replace both her and Bloom with Marionettes and get the same performances. their extra long phone convo is lacking so much chemistry, and played to false and unnatural by both actors that in that moment the whole film goes down with it. Well the movie sucked from the start but you get it. It's made even more painful that you can see what Crowe is going for and how the actors just arent taking it there.

Spidey 2 is just as bad. Her Mary jane is more annoying than anything else. it;s impossible to see how that character onscreen would ever evolve into the solid rock that Parker needs in the comic book.

    I'll give you Eternal Sunshine

In Marie Antionette she suffers from the same problem as always. Dunst almost seems to have this smirking self consciousness when she acts. As if she finds it embarrassing so she constantly lets the audience in on the ruse with her smug line delivery and 1000 yard gaze. She's not incompetent, but she could certainly afford to lose herself more.

  • Now, we know spidey 4 and 5 wil be sequel and not reboot, Sony must gift us the director's cut of spidey 3, much of the deleted scenes are great, for what i can read on the web, so let Raimi work on an alternative cut of spidey 3, they should take the curch scene at the end of the movie to gift a bridge for a venom movie... they can easily recolor the costume for the final fight with sandman, without venom in it. eddie brock don't die and you can use the same actor in venom movie, and if they add the sandman true end with the daughter who stop him and cut out the begin of the fight where we can see Dunst trap in the giant web and cut out all the tv news around the end...we can have a true good movie.

So SONY DO AN ALTERNATIVE CUT OF SPIDERMAN 3! BEFORE 4 and 5!

    Dunst is not the problem

    by i_am_not_the_droid_you_are_looking_for

When you compare it to some of the better comic book based films, like Nolans Batman or to a lesser extent, Donners Superman or Lee’s Hulk (not the rubbish Leterrier one; but I might be alone on that one! lol), Spiderman really is very bland. After Spiderman 2 (which is thought was mostly good, Molina was great) i think they ran out of ideas for what to do with the character, so they went the 90's Batman route and filled it chock o' block with villains (Don’t get me started on the “bad peter” scenes! Push you’re hair forward, wear black clothes and eyeliner! Oooh, you so bad Pete!). I would have preferred it to come down to a new goblin/spiderman face off as opposed to the computer generated noise and fury conclusion that we got. It would have nicely brought the trilogy full circle. But the Spidey flicks insistence on devoting major screen time to day-time tv style melodrama is the major problem. The whole Peter/MJ thru-story needs to be settled or written out and they need to stop using MJ as a ‘damsel-in-distress’ (they might want to stop short of killing her off though. I don’t think Parkers man enough to handle that! lol). Batman/Bruce Wayne is such an interesting character because he is psychologically damaged goods. The whole foundation of Bruce Wayne’s Batman persona stems from his sense of guilt. Spiderman/ Peter Parker’s origin is similar, but the difference is the way he’s been portrayed. The new Batman films have given the character(s) depth, and found an interesting direction in which to take them, while the Spiderman films have not. That being said, Zodiac is a brilliant film (who knows what Spiderman could have been if Fincher had accepted the job), so a Vanderbilt screenplay gives me hope for improvement in the series.

    by the starwolf

...came in the late 70s? Vulture is ranting about how he's going to tear Spidey apart and doing his usual shtick, flying rings around the webcrawler. Spidey just stands there and comments "You know what, Vulch? I've been thinking about all those fights where you gave me a hard time and realized I had a bad cold, a broken arm, or some sort of handicap. Guess what? I don't this time and you're just an old man in a flight suit." POW. One punch and the fight's over ... as it should be. Vulture really isn't in the class of villain Spider-Man should need to take seriously.

    Dunst IS the problem

    by the starwolf

Look at the comics. MJ has always had two things going for her. A statuesque figure - which Dunst certainly doesn't - and PRESENCE. Anytime this sexy, happy-go-lucky 'party girl' walks into a room, everybody takes notice. Dunst simply can't carry that off. Instead she comes across as a whiny, insecure teeny-bopper. Yes, MJ started out insecure in the comics. At least at first. But that was why she took on the 'party girl' persona - to [very effectivly] cover it up. The MJ in the movies - as portrayed by Dunst - hasn't got what it takes to make that work.

If they write the MJ character in the film as "a whiny insecure teeny-bopper" there isn't much different Dunst can do with it. So, putting the dislike for Dunst aside, would you agree that the problem might stem from the characterization of MJ?

Not the prettiest but she has chemistry with Maguire

    by koborover

Personally I think she's attractive enough to be MJ, if they keep away from the look they gave her in SM2. The make-up department made her look like a wet newspaper in that one. I was glad to see that in SM3 they returned to the SM1 look (red hair instead of orange for one thing). Anyway, the most important thing is that she has good chemistry with Maguire. Recasting would be a letdown for me. If they decide to go into the Dark Knight direction and kill MJ off in a satisfying way (like Gwen in the comics) it would feel like a big deal after all the shit they went through in the first three. Similarly if Katie Holmes had been in the Dark Knight the death of Rachel would have had more of an impact on me.

My favourite Kraven moment? An early IRON MAN comic where the two go at it. Well, sort of. The encounter lasts all of two panels. Panel one, IM sees him. Panel two, IM is dragging an unconscious Kraven off to the cops. If Spider-Man was written intelligently, that's about how long it would last, too. I think I'll skip #4. Doesn't sound as though they've learned from their mistakes of #3.

Tired of hearing about Spiderman 3

    by lagomorph

There was a lot to like in Spiderman 3 and the overall feel of the film and the performances were all good. The script was overstuffed, and Raimi was let off his leash too much but overall it still worked. The series does not need a reboot. And it does not need to go "dark" like nolan's batman. The camp aspects work with Spidey who has always been the wisecrackinest of the well known Marvel superheroes. If anything I think it should go more pulp and less operatic. If they take these two movies to tell a cohesive story that doesn't involve a dame dangling from a building (which is in all three movies) I think two more Spidey movies with the same basic cast could be a very good thing.

lagomorph, nice to see someone w/sense around here

    by chishu_ryu

Spiderman 3 was a fine film. A lot of people I know thought it was a fine film. It kept a lot of the elements from the first two films so that it was definitely part of a trilogy and was different enough to be its own film. Personally, for me, it was my favorite of the trilogy, as I felt the characterization in the first two films was rather two dimensional, whereas in the third, Raimi explored a bit more. And this, of course, all was an organic extension of what was established in the first two stories. Now that Peter has the girl of his dreams, what does he do now? And what happens when Peter is at the height of his fame as Spiderman and MJ is at the low end of hers? I found the drama fascinating, and to me, this is what was at the heart of those old Stan Lee stories, the personal drama of Peter Parker and the people he loves. Of course, this is coming from someone who digs John Cassavetes over James Cameron any day of the week. But I also think it's possible for both large and small, emotion and action, love and rockets, humor and drama, art and commercialism to exist in the same movie. I think that's what Spiderman 3 was, and I think that's why it confounded so many people.

    Theory on the alien symbiote

    by chishu_ryu

The coincidence of the symbiote crash landing right next to Peter Parker is a common talking point I've noticed.
Okay. But what if the alien's crash landing wasn't a crash landing? It was intelligent after all. What if the all-powerful symbiote actively sought out the most powerful human being on the planet, who was also, at the same time, in the right mental state for the taking (meaning he was in a state of hubris)? What if the alien symbiote knew where the hell it was going when it crashed near Peter? If I were an intelligent symbiote, that's what I'd do, as opposed to jumping onto some drunken hobo or some other normal person. I think this theory is entirely feasible, and though I haven't heard this from Raimi himself, I believe that this is the explanation.

Spiderman didn't exist in the "Marvel" Universe

    by chishu_ryu

Meaning he was the only super-powered being on the planet, besides the villains. This is all before the new Marvel Studios take on their movies.
Another coincidence point that comes up a lot is Eddie Brock being in the church when Peter exorcises the symbiote. I think this goes along with "strange fate" that's run through all the films, where all the characters have been strangely connected somehow. Eddie Brock was like this bizarro-Peter character. And if the symbiote couldn't have Peter, it was going to have his negative opposite, and in turn, destroy the positive.

    More on the alien symbiote

    by chishu_ryu

And perhaps the symbiote sought out Peter because it could itself grow and become more powerful from the parasitic partnership? When the symbiote exits Peter's person, perhaps it took a bit of Peter's essence along with it, and thus became more powerful as Venom. Through the bond with Peter, perhaps the symbiote itself was becoming a Spider?

    by sambrook

Why do all the villains in any superhero film live in the same city as the hero? Why are half of them connected to the hero perosnally? These sort of films rely on coincidences like that to get the story going and the symbiote landing is no worse than having the Green Goblin be Peter's best friend's dad or the same guy Peter was doing a college project on turned mad in an experiment gone wrong. It's true for all comic book films. You just ignore them unless you're being picky because you don't like the film. I'm not saying Spider-Man 3 isn't without it's flaws but that's a weak criticism.

but I actually enjoyed Spidey 3 the most out of the lot of them. Yeah - the most!

I didn't mind the musical numbers, they were emotionally barbed - there was nastiness happening there. Just because singing and dancing are like kryptonite to the average TBer, doesn't mean they are to a Spidey film, if there is context. Conversely, that fucking play in '2' really did go on forever.

The plotholes in '3' were no more holey than the previous entries, and the production values were at least equal to '2'. -

Oh, and by the way, everybody bitching about Dunst's looks and Howard's fat ass should be writing candid camera articles for celebrtiy magazines, not posting on sites about (what is admittedly) - cool news.

I'd love to see Dwayne Johnson, i.e. The Rock as Kraven the Hunter, a big publicity hound coming to NYC to catch the Lizard.
I also wish Raimi would dial back the camp in the next movie. It overwhelmed SM 3; it was the Superman 3 of the series. I'm not suggesting it should be dark and moody, because that isn't Spider-Man. But more "realistic" (as realistic as a comic-book movie CAN be), isn't the same thing as 'dark'. It just means reducing some of the more tongue in cheek moments and having Peter Parker live in a more 'natural', more reality-based NY.

To Symbiote or not to Symbiote

    by i_am_not_the_droid_you_are_looking_for

I agree that there are coincidences in all films, not just superhero films. My objection is thus. If they want to explore the dark side of Spiderman, go for it. But do it through plausible (well, plausible for a superhero movie) and more interesting means. To quote Lord Acton "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men." There were possibilities there for great cinema. With the "alien symbiote", they created a plot device to manufacture an instant result. No work needed. Ultimately what they wanted is the payoff, but not the journey. Instead of devoting so much screen time multiple villains, I would’ve much preferred them show Parkers descent into that state of mind, into what drove him to become bad. And show what it takes to bring him back (Maybe a chance to develop MJ into something more than a damsel-in-distress?). This is something potentially interesting, and much more human and involving. Couple that with the new Green Goblin as sole villain and we could have had a fully rounded, dramatically satisfying trilogy. I think we’ve been spoilt by Nolans Batman in that we have seen how a superhero can be a full, three-dimensional character. The journey of Bruce Wayne, as it unfolds, is all the more interesting because Nolan et al know it’s not about special effects and action set-pieces (although there’s plenty of those!). It’s the characters we identify with that have us involved in the story. Respect has been shown to the audience and the audience has repaid that respect. Hopefully more filmmakers will heed the call.

how she thought her career was on the upswing and she was "too good" for anymore movies...then jake dumped her and her career went into a holding pattern...now she is "willing to come back". blah! drop her. she isn't even weirdly attractive like linda fiorentino, ellen barkin, or rebecca de mornay...dunst blows...she made mary jane watson unlikeable...spiderman's backbone...spiderman's lois lane...improbable.

    I Am Not The Droid

    by sambrook

I agree, I don't have a problem with how the symbiote was introduced but as a plot point it was rushed. Which is odd as it took ages to actually get to it and then he seemed to wear black for about half an hour. It's Spider-Man 3's biggest problem - pacing. It just doesn't seem to balance all of it's elements.

Dark Spiderman, the symbiote, and Venom

    by chishu_ryu

Venom was required to be introduced in the film on orders from Avi Arad, so Raimi had to use Venom, which meant the alien symbiote suit had to be introduced, which meant a prime opportunity to use the black Spiderman costume. I think implementing these three new elements into an exploration of Dark Spiderman/Dark Peter was probably the best use of those story elements which were ordered to be there by the studio.

I dont agree. It would be totally out of character for Peter Parker to become dark and depraved without the influence of the Symbiote. Oh I'm sure there are occasional exceptions in his long history, but generally that is true. It would be a mistake to think that other characters, with entirely different personalities would have to be dark or shown as corrupted by power in order to have the character be "realistic."

Ryan Reynolds would have been an awesome Spidy

    by thelastcleric

The guy not only has the physical stature (something Tobey never had) his smart-ass personality would have been perfect for the role. Instead we get a doe-eyed, angst-ridden Tobey with very little of Spiderman's trademark humor.

    Too Early for The Lizard?

    by youguysgotanymilk

It may too early to go with the Lizard as a villain. Yeah Doc Conners was in the other two movies but for about a total of 5 minutes? In order for a Lizard story line to work we need to see Spiderman working with Conners and the relationship needs to develope more to get the real sense that Peter doesn't want to hurt the Lizard because of his relationship with Conners. If they did it now it would be too similar to Doc Ock and how Peter simply respected him as a scientist and wanted to save him not the high dynamic of knowing him as a friend and knowing his wife and son. It needs to be developed more before he can be a villain.

    Why not Rachel McAdams?

    by zer0cool2k2

She's quite attractive, and a pretty good actress to boot. Yes, MaryJane was supposed to be a young bombshell, and Dunst has too much of a trailer-park look these days.
Pre-burnout (Mean Girls Era) Lohan would've been great.

Dunst has annoyed me since Pt II I Thought Gwen Stacy was breath of fresh air (I like a little junk in the trunk) But the Thought of someone with superpowers being attracted to spiderman And peter being attracted to someone other then Mary Jane is very appealing.

I used to like the Spiderman movies

    by yamato

But the more I see them the less I like them. Spidey's humor is missing, and just a lot of other little things. Bonesaw hitting him in SP1, what happened to his spidersense? Doc Ock getting punched often and not going down in SP2. SP3 just plain sucked, but I think Topher Grace would have made a much better Peter Parker then Toby.

    Kirsten Dunst

    by cybyer

I get the impression from interviews and such that Dunst is burned out on the Hollywood schtick. The girl has talent, but lately just seems to be on auto-pilot in all her roles. Maybe she should just drop off the grid and take a five-year vacation. Recharge the old batteries, come back when she finds a role that she would kill to do, and hit it on all cylinders. And for God's sake, hit a buffet or two along the way. The girl had better curves in Toy Story, fer chrissakes! Sad.

If they do a Kraven story, then it's gotta be based off 'Kraven's Last Hunt'. Just substitute the Lizard in for Vermin and you're ready to go!

I like her as Mary Jane.

    by mrfloppy

And I prefer to not recast her or Tobey. A trilogy would have been perfect, but after the JUST BAD third entry, I'm open for more with a new writer.

But hell, we need a MATURE filmaker not just an angry kiddie who destroy a film because he don't like a character. Please Raime, don't come back.
