Who'll Play Robin Hood Opposite Russell Crowe's NOTTINGHAM??
Merrick here...
We've been hearing about Ridely Scott's revisionist take on ROBIN HOOD for a while now & many different names were rumored to be in contention for the "Robin" role (most persistently Christian Bale).
One indication from CHUD (HERE) told us that Robin would actually be played by the same guy portraying The Sheriff of Nottingham - Russell Crowe.
Well, Scott has finally resolved the issue once and for all by revealing who he cast as Robin Hood to MTV. And..it's just like CHUD said:
The news comes straight from the helmer himself, with Scott revealing “He’s playing both!” exclusively to MTV News during an interview for his new film “Body of Lies,” which co-stars Crowe. While Scott held additional details close to his chest — saying they would take too long to describe — he did exclaim that Crowe’s dual roles would be “a good old clever adjustment of characters. One becomes the other. It changes.”
...says THIS ARTICLE at MTV.
So there you have it...

I wait till I see footage before I say anything else about it.
-
I was kinda looking forward to some really intense scenes between crow and another heavyweight actor. This sounds gimmicky but I trust in Ridley.
-
But it begs the question, in a fight between Russell Crowe and Russell Crowe, who would win?
-
...really stupid.
-
Did Ridley suddenly forget which film he's making? This sounds very 'Prince and the Pauper' to me, folks...
-
The story becomes a "split-personalities in one person" narrative? I dunno - that *could* be interesting to learn that the Sherriff and Robin were the same person all along.
-
or Kevin Costner!!
-
...how in the world are they going to pull off that classic "Sherrif-Rapes-Robin-While-In-The-Dungeon" scene? Is Crowe going to fuck himself in the ass....? --G
-
As much as I want to I have no interest in this in the slightest so far
-
This will be brilliant or embarrassing.
-
They "broke" the stories on Will Smith as Captain America and Depp and Hoffman as the Riddler and the Penguin (i guess they re-broke that second one). Yes, the fact that this comes from the mouth of the director lends the story a little more credibility, but MTV's "reporters" have certainly shown that they can't discern a joke from a statement of fact.
-
It's not both characters being played by crowe. It's using the conceit that Nottingham actually IS Robin Hood. I don't think in a multiple-personality way either - More a secret identity thing.
-
The state of the economy. Last time Ridley and Russel made a movie by themselves it was about older Britishy dudes sitting around Italy drinking wine and being rich. To begin with they're doing a robin hood movie in which the sherrif of nottingham is the hero and robin hood is the villain, which during a financial meltdown is beyond stupid. To take the single folk hero who represents stealing from the rich and giving to the poor out of injustice and make him a villain now is like making a movie about about the CEOs of Lehman Bros as action heros. And now to have Crowe play both, even stupider.
-
So the Sheriff will simply pretend to be vexed by Hood and never catches the merry men. Kinda Zorro-esque. I get it, but prefer the traditional antagonist-protagonist premise.
-
Crowe will also play Nottingham's mother, father, grandmother, overweight sister, mentally challenged brother, and effete Dutch psychiatrist.
-
But I don't how they can do any good action sequences with him playing both parts
-
CHUD believes that it's not some Peter Sellers/Eddie Murphy type deal but a gimmick where the Sheriff himself is the guy putting on the mask and becoming Robin Hood. This quote fits with that theory but doesn't exactly make it clear what the deal is.
Anyway, let's all hope he wears a fat suit for one of the roles. -

And then he'll put on a fat suit for BIG SHERRIF'S HOUSE!
by blackmantis
And also do blackface to play the Morgan Freeman part from Prince Of Thieves.
-
MAN IN SUIT!
-
Jude Law...
-
...but just this film's subject matter alone is what makes me uncertain about Ridley's choices these days. I feel like the subject of Robin Hood has been played out. Also, it just feels like Ridley has already made this (or type of) movie before. While these guys are two immense talents, I remain skeptical and rather disinterested in this one.
-
This reeks of gay.
-
"...in a fight between Russell Crowe and Russell Crowe, who would win?"
All of us would, my friend. All of us. -
This is all sounding rather more bizarre than I was expecting. I guess that's kind of a cool thing.
-
If the Sheriff and Hood are two separate characters, then having Crowe play both would be a terrible idea. Previous reports have suggested that the Sheriff is the good guy and Hood the bad guy. So I would love it if the Sheriff invented Hood as a bad guy to frighten the populace and keep himself in power. The 'Power of Nightmares' scenario. Or if the Sheriff killed Hood early on and then, realising he needed an opponent, took his place.None of this would explain the Merry Men's role. I guess, by necessity, they would be in the Sheriff's employ and in on the plan.
-
That way Russell Crowe would be intruding on Eddie Murphy's turf.
-
So, let's see which direction this one goes in.
-
Body Of Lies also. Personally, I was not that impressed by American Gangster, but I know that was just me.
-
That reminds me of that scene from wishmaster 2 where that guy wishes his lawyer would go fuck himself and the evil Genie grants his wish making his lawyer literally contort and then fuck himself.
-
That rules out a good movie... They really should have gotten Christian Bale...
-
Holy shit...I missed that one! I'm netflixing it as we speak! --G
-
I LEARNED THAT I LIKE "STEAM PUNK" MOVIES (The Prestiege, Hellboy 2, City of Lost Children, etc... ) LMAO! ALSO THAT I AM DATING A STEAMPUNKER WHATEVER THAT MEANS...
-
Hopefully this is going to be almost as successful and profitable as "Speed Racer".
-
When Ridley's on good, he's great: ALIEN; BLADE RUNNER; GLADIATOR; BLACK HAWK DOWN. But when Ridley's not go good, he comes off as hack-ish as his brother, Tony: BLACK RAIN; SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME; KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.
-
I recently watched the Final Cut, and it made me realize that I've unconsciously always preferred the original theatrical version -- voice over and all. Mostly because I don't think the idea that Deckard is a replicant is as interesting as if he's not. That he's a human who grows to have compassion for -- even love for -- replicants has always struck me as more profound than if he were predisposed/programmed to be sympathetic. Anyone agree or disagree?
-
Try and watch the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven. It's a different movie than the theatrical realease, and it really is an excellent movie. Other than that, I fully agree with you.
-
Frank? That you? When are you making the Long walk?
-
have you NOT seen recent pics of Crowe?
He needs a skinny suit to play Robin. -
i prefer to think that deckard is in fact a replicant, but that he never discovers it and that it's a detail that's tangential to the story, as well as being completely unexplained. if you pick up on the clues and realize his true nature, then you've discovered an easter egg. but the point is that as far as he and the overall story is concerned, he's as human as any human in the film. i love this friggin movie. if holywood only produced two films ever, blade runner and unforgiven, i would be content.
-
They sort of did the same thing with the actor playing Captain Hook/Mr. Darling.
-
I know that Scott does have those weaker films on his resume, and he can't transcend mediocre material, but he is nothing like his ADD-on-crack style of his younger brother.

So will Guy of Gisborner be Robin since the Sheriff is Batman?
by stereotypical evil archer
-
I think it would be "Aw Helleth Naw!"
-
but will anyone else? I like the guy but it just kinda proves right all those who would say he's an arrogant prick. Do people really not understand how this sort of thing appears to normal people?
-
The Sheriff is going to be Robin Hood but in disguise? This sounds like bullshit. Theres not really many new ways of going over this legend, but this certainly doesn't sound like a good one. And in all seriousness - how long has it been since Ridley Scott AND Russell Crowe have made a decent film (either seperately or together)??
-
Yeah, it actually was the director's cut that I watched. I just wasn't feeling it. It might be Or-bland-o Bloom's fault, plus the yawn-inducing casting of Liam Neeson in a role he's played way too often.
-
Noop. Not Frank. I'm Odysseus, the wanderer, harried for years on end.... Actually, my name is Todd.
-
geeehy
-
I just don't think Deckard being a replicant can be a tangential easter egg. I really think it undermines the power of Deckard's growth. But hey, in the end, I love BR (and UNFORGIVEN, too).
-
You're right. When Ridley's uninspired, he's just bland.
-
Then maybe it'll work.
-
And I was really looking forward to it.
-
...Russell Crowe is good, but let's face it...he's NO Hayley Mills.
-
thats pretty much a dead on summary
-
..that what Scott means is Crowe starts off as the Sheriff but has a change of heart and becomes Robin and some unknown heavyweight is in the shadows to take on the role of Sheriff to hunt him down. It will be a two movie package shot simultaneously with Tim Roth as the eventual true Big Bad. I do this because my reality tends to suck alot less than the one I keep waking the fuck up to.
-
THAT was some funny shit.
-
I was pretty excited about this before. But now I don't know. I don't like this idea at all. The concept of Robin Hood being the bad guy was interesting.
-
What a stupid fucking gimmick. Does anyone like it when films do shit like this? The answer is no, no they don't. Change it.
-
I have a feeling they are combining the real-life history of Richard the Lionheart with the tale of Robin Hood. Because of the usual Robin Hood tales, most people believe that Prince John was the villain in history and all was set right when King Richard returned from the crusades. However, in reality, King Richard barely spoke english, only spent 6 months in England and forced his brother to raise taxes to fund the crusades. I have a feeling that the Sheriff will be sympathetic to the poor in this version, and will create the guise of Robin Hood to try and set things right in the Kingdom.
-
BECOMES Robin Hood. How hard is that?
-
That is the twist. The sheriff is so disgusted by what he sees Prince John doing, that he creates Robin Hood as a way to cleanse his conscience. All the while still fighting, from within, the establishment.
-

so yeah, i guess i will mention how horrible the singing was
by future help
laughable rock voice
-
MMmmmmmmmnope, I don't see it.
Is Russell going to be Maid Marian, Will Scarlet, Little John and Friar Tuck as well?
-
Whatever the gimmick or whatever you might call it, at least they are trying something different. Even if he's just messing with us and its a plot device where the Sheriff goes out as Robin Hood or something of the like, at least it sounds like something fairly unique. As much as I love Bale, he doesn't need another iconic role for himself. This news was cooler than I expected when I clicked the link, basically. I was sort figuring it would read Guy Pearce, etc.

-
You know it to be true!
-
The Sheriff doesn't know he's Robin and Robin doesn't know he's the Sheriff... wait... isn't Christian Slater doing that already?
-
... until I see it. Have been laughing at some of the hysterical takes on this but while Crowe may in fact be abit of a bastard in real life, he's probably my favorite current actor. Loved 310 to Yuma.
-
Because now we know the BIG TWIST ending, the Sheriff is the Hood
-
Sounds kind of stupid. But still its Ridley Scott AND Russel Crowe so I'm fucking watching it.
-
Like Bruce Wayne being Batman isn't a twist or a surprise.
-
At first I thought MTV just had it wrong, or were deliberately misleading us in order to create a "scoop": perhaps they asked Ridley Scott if Russell Crowe was playing "the bad guy," to which Scott would reply "He's playing both!" to illustrate that despite normally being the villain, in this revisionist take the Sheriff would be the protagonist. That's just one way the news could've been misinterpreted.
However, the CHUD article supports the duel role theory, and I'm beginning to believe it. It sounds like a lame idea. A sympathetic Crowe facing off against an asshole Sam Riley as Robin Hood would've been cool. Going one step beyond the revisionism to create some sort of duel-role mechanic is going one step too many. -
Jerry Reed's dead, so who'll play Robin in the inevitable reshoots?
-
That's what this sounds like to me. Demented guy hunts himself without knowing he's both guys.
Sounds like a bad idea for a Robin Hood film. -
Is it wrong that I really enjoy S+TB3? More than the second one?
"Don't stand too close, Junior. You'll get a herpes on ya!" -
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Balin (Kingdom of Heaven) rumored to become Robin Hood. I like the idea of Bale, but he's so overexposed right now. Had Scott had the gravitas to make a true sequel to Kingdom of Heaven, Nottingham could have been amazing! Alas, what could have been...
-
I'd definitely take the idea that the sheriff creates Robin Hood as a kind of insurgency against the brutality of the crown over the single most beyond tired gimmick of multiple personality disorders. Here's hoping that they've got an awesome, rock-solid script, and that Sir Ridley is suitably inspired and returns to form with this one. And, oh yes, that he also completely drops the idea of adapting Blood Meridian and instead FOCUSES on a choice slice of ORIGINAL science fiction.
-
I don't get why all you whiners previously saying 'FFS yet ANOTHER Robin Hood adaptation...' aren't jumping for joy at this news because it means Scott is gonna take on the Hood legend in an original way. Like with the BBC's new Merlin series (and, indeed, Robin Hood) these 'legends' can be adapted for screen in ANY number of different ways. There's no such thing as a 'faithful' vision to adhere to. My guess is that Robin WILL be played by a different actor in the first part of the movie but when he is killed Crowe's Sheriff will secretly take up the Hood mantle to preserve the balance. Subsequently he'll turn into a good guy through and through but when he's found out he'll be executed and that's how the movie will end.
-
The Sheriff was Robin Hood the whole time!
-
they didn't care about a Thor film. This whole projects sounds wrethed and Russell "my shit doesn't stink" Crowe will make it worse. A must to avoid ...now
-
That is all.
-
the sheriff of nottingham must BECOME him
-
Look, this might sound stupid, but I think it could work - it will be about the Sheriff "creating" Robin Hood, to give the people a hero, as an excuse for his missing cash, to give a reason for Sherwood. The story will be about the creation of a legend. It's not hard to follow this, people.
-
you mean, "let's hope he wears a thin suit for one of the roles."
also, you need to get some Capone-esque showings going on here in Sea-town! I will hook you up with half-price kegs for some private AICN screenings if you can get something cooking! -
when douche bags think they can sing. Stick to the movies Crowe or I will throw a cell phone at you.
-
its sides of the same character - maybe he's the corrupt sherriff who turns good, or vice versa. but that quote gives me the impression it's one character
-
You know it's fucking true.
-
I heard this production has shut down.
-
Might as well make a movie for Russell Crowe that's like that scene in Being John Malkovich where Malkovich sees everyone as himself and people only can say Malkovich. Yeah, all that except for Crowe.
-
Smokey IS The Bandit!
-
I would say that was his last brilliant film...though I would say a couple of his since have been great...just not brilliant.
-
Ridley Scott hasn't made a good film since Thelma and Louise. "Blade Runner" is up there, but don't forget "Legend" and "Black Rain."
-
Give me a break. How completely unnecessary!!
-
How dare u put the name Eddie Murphy in the same sentence with Peter Sellers, thats just wrong.
-
only 1 guy playing both roles. "I want you to shoot the arrow at me as hard as you can." "I'M GOING TO THROW THIS TELEPHONE AT YUUU"
-
on Richard Kluger's book "The Sheriff of Nottingham"http://tinyurl.com/3n2ehu(link leads to Amazon)Which had the story from the Sheriff's point of view, but perhaps now they are going with a plot in which Crowe's unnamed character gets the job as the Shire Reeve, and then realizes what a shitty thing he is doing to the local peasants by taxing the crap out of them and locking them up for poaching (hunting for survival), so revolts by becoming Hood??
-
Strewth it's loik the inside of Russ's moind! Go Russ Go!
C'arn the Rabbitohs! -
I like Russell Crowe but I'll pass if this is the case.
