The New CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTONS Trailer Looks Like A Trailer For A Masterwork From David Fincher!

Published at:  Sep 27, 2008 5:30:34 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here - I know a few people that have seen Fincher's latest film, the crazy digital effects that you see affecting Brad Pitt's character are a very time consuming process, but that the film as it is right now... is just the most brilliant thing Fincher has ever done.

I CAN NOT WAIT! Eric Roth seems to be operating in comfortable materials, but from a much better source than Gump came from, but a magical story that is equally amazing and everywhere. This will be THE movie to watch for Awards this year!

In a strange way, I feel like we might actually be getting into Fincher's prime from Zodiac onward. He's certainly gotten a second wind. I just like that he's trying new things on this one, but does feel like a Fincher film (and not in a Panic Room sorta way). I honestly had no interest in the premise for this film, but it looks great. Not his best work by any means, but certainly great.

    Those effects look so bad...

    by greenleaf1

I was very disappointed when I saw this trailer yesterday and saw how unrealistic the effects looked for the younger/older Benjamin Button. I'm really hoping they just aren't finished and it will look better when released, but I'm starting to think that's what we're gonna get. What would've been so bad about just having a young actor in old makeup?

Zodiac was totally snubbed by Academy Awards...

    by badwaldo s revenge

...that's the best movie of the year for me. Screw the senile morons. Kubrick had a similar treatment but so what? I hope The Curious Case of Benjamin Button will finally force Academy Awards to notice and nominate accordingly for artistic merits instead of seasonal politics. Unless it's a leaden pacing that kills the momentum for the film in terms of entertaining the audience without snoozing and prompt walkouts.

to see all the love for Zodiac, on the site. It's a masterwork from a brilliant director. Ok, it got snubbed by the Academies but who really cares about that shit? I know it feels good to see the films you love awarded but you know the system is stupid anyway so why bother getting mad about it? I mean, they gave the Best Picture Oscar to Crash. That right there voids the legitimacy that the Oscars possess.

    by half vader

    - I wonder if they used reference of Robert Redford for the 'older' stuff? 'Cause Pitt sure does resemble him at times.

That "Seven" shot's eye movement is a bit funny/measured, as is the 'muscleman' shot, but considering the difficulty (this is the hardest thing you could possibly do in effects), it's pretty darn good, and already a million times better than Fincher's disturbing dry-run on those Redenbacher (is that the one?) popcorn ads!

Has potential to be a masterpiece. I really have high hopes for this film. Whenever I have heard Fincher talk about his work I have always been struck by his "film sense". This guy understands American style film grammar better than anyone... or at least he's in good company with the likes of people like Spielberg and Scorsese.

Its nice to know that old school classic film making is still alive in some form. There is a small group of directors that puts out consistantly quality work and Fincher is one of them. Its just too bad that Anthony Minghella died he did similarly brilliant work.

Comign of age flick, are you fucking kidding me? The whole theme of starting out old and becoming younger and younger totally alienates you from the rest of the world. This has the potential to be really powerful stuff. And not only emotionally powerful but narratively, that is an absolutely interesting concept, so where does boredom even come into play? I see nothing but intrigue.

    by sk229

Besides his immense ability as a director, I admire Fincher for being the only guy so far who has done HD right. AND he used HD to go and make what I consider the second best movie last year (and possibly in the past 10-15 years) with Zodiac. (My #1 is TWBB for anyone who cares...) He did a great interview in a podcast about how he arrived at shooting uncompressed HD straight to external drives through experimentation on commercials and that he only had to use minimal lighting. To the point where Harris Savides said to him something like, "You can practically light it and do everything yourself now, you only have me here for my opinion." I LOVE that about Fincher - he's just like Kubrick in that way. He says it certainly doesn't put him in high regard with the 200 people that normally work on a movie, but he really wants to get filmmaking down to the point where you can shoot something beautiful and tell your story without the tail wagging the dog, as can happen on a film set when things get out of control. He also is smart in realizing that a 35mm sensor is not the end-all, be-all, but rather a super 16 sized sensor where you can GET those shallow DOF shots if you need to, but you also have the ability to shoot in lower light without focus being so critical as it is with a 35mm surface area. It's kind of the opposite of the mentality of all these mini-HD productions where they think you still need the enormous apparatus, you just make up different names for the crew members. It's the mentality of a true artist, who wants to eat and breathe the film as he's making it, even to the point of holding the camera himself. It really brings filmmaking closer to other artforms, even though it will always be collaborative, HD can be used to 'cut out the fat' as they say, and that's exactly what Fincher is doing with it.I also want to say that getting into HD DVD for $150 with Amazon (and now a blu-ray/HD DVD combo player... oh well...) was worth it JUST for being able to enjoy Zodiac in high def for the past 9 months. Fucking breathtaking...

  • 35mm is still 35mm, but I get the feeling people are going to start doing some really interesting things with digital.

    by wayne6000

As a keen fan of Fincher's work myself, I'd love to see this do extremely well, but having read in Variety it's budget (Paramount are going halves on it with Warner Bros) has spiralled to close to around 150 - 170 mill, I'd be surprised if it'll make a profit for both parties, with the heavy competition it'll have in late December.

yeah, but Zodiac only made half its budget in domestic, and made well past it's budget worldwide...by like $20 mil, not to mention big DVD sales.this one is going to make it's money back and then some in the theaters. but maybe not by a big margin. (I think it can do $150, but if it's budget really does end up at like $175, that's a stretch)but with DVD sales, it'll do fine. I still can't quite believe it's budget is that high, shooting on digital after all the effects cost goes down slightly. but I guess Fincher does shoot like 10 times as much as any other filmmaker, and for a long movie, even more so.

Pitt wasn't born in Hollywood. He's from the midwest. And considering people these days don't sound the same (intonations, drawl or cadence) as their great great grandparents (which is the era we're talking up to more recent), I think your post is a bit redundant. Cheers.

    by half vader

More like medium-big. Scary but true.

Cifra, Australia is probably only a contender fr 'technical'/art dept Oscars. It's not really about the cookie-cutter story, it's about the grand vistas. You'll see (if they ever finish the thing)...

For another interesting post - the whole super 16 vs 35 sensor bit. That Fincher. There was a story in an animation magazine about him doing optical stuff on Twice upon a Time back in the old ILM days and how he was telling the vets what to do even then!

    Anyone read the story?

    by garbage

It's one of my favourites, and definitely my favourite by Fitzgerald (though I've only read a few of his). The strange thing is that the tone of the story--if I'm reading it correctly--is more comic, almost gently satirical. The last few paragraphs are fairly touching, though. I remember thinking, after reading it, that Fitzgerald had done something marvellous: come up with an interesting idea, and then pulled it off well. Too many writers come up with an interesting idea and do nothing with it, or just coast, thinking that the idea itself invests the story with brilliance.

he made in his early films but failed to deliver until Zodiac. Don't get me wrong, I root for the guy, but until Zodiac his only good film was Seven, and even that film got by on style over substance.

It would also be nice for a Fitzgerald story to get the film treatment it deserves. Oh, and if you've read and liked "Benjamin Button" then I would highly recommend "A Diamond As Big As the Ritz" by Fitzgerald. It's a wonderfully strange and subversive satire. One of my favorite short stories.
