Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT looks like exactly that in Trailer 2!
Hey folks, Harry here... FINALLY - a quasi coherent trailer for THE SPIRIT that gets me hopped up and anxious to see whatever Frank Miller has done to the great Will Eisner's greatest creation. I can tell you now, Frank has done his own thing to it, and yeah, there's a part of me that hates that, but at the same time - had Frank come out with a Comic in his art style of THE SPIRIT - and it was a complete reinvention I would have eagerly sought it out. This is just Frank doing his thing in a different medium... I just hope it rocks!

Really - it all looks the same feels the same and gets boring really quick. BTW: First.
-
Hopefully it's not just flash. The earlier trailer screamed pretension. This at least hints of some action and plot. Hopefully the anachronistic dialogue is kept to a minimum.
-
similar to sin city but theres nothing wrong with that
-
I am The Spirit.
I fight women.
And a black guy who has poorly glued on sideburns and runny mascara.
Fear m... eh, fuck it. I'm a pussy. -
hopefully they got skilled people to edit frank's mess.
-
'cept Sin City...and thats not a bad thing....
-
and spitting it on the screen. Still looks like utter monkey shit. Miller hasn't made anything good since 1992.
-
This trailer screams "FRANK MILLER!
But where is Will Eisner's sensibility in this? I don't want to see a nasty, nihilistic Spirit. Eisner's Spirit was fun, not angsty. -
And whats up with the Untouchables mucic rip-off? Not that I am complaining, I like Dick Tracy and Untouchables, and if this is somehow a fusion of those, with Speed Racer graphics, Sin City gore, then I dont care what they rip-off as long as its entertaining.
-
Give you a tie? Why don't you just spend the rest of the movie shirtless instead, mkay?
-
Looks pretty good to me.
This is a comic book movie people. I don't know what the heck you're expecting. -
were spent on a GOOD script, with INTELLIGENT dialogue, the movie would probably be AMAZING! This looks corny to the point of complete embarrassment. Maybe they can salvage it by recutting it as a silent film with a great soundtrack?
-
I love all the graphic movie adaptations. This does not "look like shit". Is it Citizen Kane, is it Titanic, is it The Dark Knight?. No. Does it look pretty cool? Yes. And thats all its supposed to be, is pretty cool. I don't understand what people hate about this or about 300, or about Watchmen, or about any stylized graphic novel adaptation in general. It's like Candide said "he must be really smart, he doesn't like anything!".
-
Thanks for showing us the octopus getting blown up.
This film is now worst than godzilla thanks to its trailer ! -

Expect the usual four-star rave from Roger Ebert...

...that he gives to EVERY SINGLE MOVIE that creates an elaborate fictitional world via special effects.
-
WTF? You have these great buildings, cars, offices, and outfits, then you have people firing AK-47s and whatever those machineguns Sam Jackson had, as well as those high-tech modern helicopters?
I started having misgivings in the first trailer when there was a beeping phone rather than a classic ringing one.
Hm. I don't know about this... -
Jesus Christ. Let's make everything look like Sin City. Witch Mountain? SIN CITY. Poltergeist remake? SIN CITY.
-
Just read that the movie legend/race driver/salad dressing mogul has shuffled off this mortal coil. RIP man.
-
that's a truly stupid line.
-
And there's a whole separate thread where you can give your condolences.
-
Come on, now. Sin City was about as far in this direction anyone in their right mind would ever want to go. This is too corny. I'd be shocked if audiences went for this.
-
But what's this 'The Spirit movie' you keep talking about? I haven't seen anything from it.
-
When I saw the trailer (the first one), it seemed cheesy. Bad. The kind of thing that makes you wince, because it's just plain embarrassing. Like Walker, Texas Ranger. At least this 2nd trailer points to a somewhat more cohesive plot. Although as someone already mentioned, the juxtaposition of 40's clothing with 08's most advanced military weaponry is kind of odd. But yeah, it still looks awful. *sigh* I hope it's good, though. . .I really want it to be good. Don't disappoint me now, Miller--although you've done it quite a few times with DK2 and ASBR and the Sin City movie.
-
I bet the movie's going to be overwrought, laboured and kind of embarrassing, but I enjoyed this trailer.
-
Im going too enjoy this, I think. Some nice dialogue too
-
What did we do to deserve a crappy PG-13 rating with bodies like those throughout the movie?
-
I saw this trailer in front of
Iron Man in MAY!
Get with the program, AICN. -
Unfortunately that hype died awhile ago. Miller has become a hack. Has anyone been reading All Star Batman and Robin... It's convoluted and Miller, who apparently has forgotten how to tell a story just expects us to continue drink his kool aid. I stopped drinking at the second issue of DK2. Eisner's family should sue for defamation of a fictional character.
-
Sammy looks all strung out and wasted.
Explode well, my friend! -
instead of it ripping off the look of Sin City, its using Sky Captain...got it. :P it looks sorta cool though, doubt i'd see it in theaters but yeah.
-
you might have done what i did and opened the first teaser. because i went to the site and did the same "wha..i saw this". but scroll a little and there's a place to watch Trailer 2, it isnt HD and its a tiny window but yeah.
-
I read the Dark Knight Strikes again, figuring if it's anything close to the Dark Knight Returns, this book would be amazing. Wrong. It was absolute crap and...SPOILERS!!!what the fuck was up with Robin showing up at the end as a pseudo-joker guy? did Miller just decide to ignore all previous characterization of Dick Grayson for the hell of a final plot twist? Weak. You're done Miller. You finished up the genius part of your brain in the 90s. And that part of you just doesn't seem to work any more by the looks of this trailer.
-
Much better than Gus Van Rant: The Movie. Am I right haters or am I right?
-
Frank Miller is one of those guys who doesn't actually have talent, but he really sells himself like he does, and makes you believe it. Then later on, the bewitchment wears off, and you realize just how banal and childish his writing really is. It's funny because when he became popular it was because his work was being sold to us as 'mature' and we bought it, Sin City for example, simply because there is splattering blood and sluts throughout. But when you really take a second look at it, you realize that his comics are infinitely less mature than your average Spiderman or X-Men comic. They read like the stories a thirteen year old would write, seeping with overindulgence and ultraviolence just for the sake of ultraviolence. And this movie looks so fucking corny and childish, the dialog is cringe-inducing. And it isn't Frank Miller being ironic or being corny on purpose, this is how he writes, it's how people talk in his head. You could throw a stone into a Junior Highschool and there's a pretty good chance whatever acne-faced, B.O.-ridden teen you hit could write on par or better than Frank Miller.
-
I guess this is going to be The Spirit from now on. I was content with the Will Eisner Library editions and I would have been absolutely content with an animated movie but... Oh well... I guess this is going to be The Spirit from now on.
-
anyways, yeah it looks dumb. The trailer was looking good...until it became flat out ridiculous with all the guns and helicopters and chicks. It doesnt even have a coherent style...film noir meets big budget action? I can already guess the last line..."too bad you dont have nine lives octopus". Wont be wasting time on this crap.
-
If you can watch these trailers and not think this movie is, at the very least, intriguing, then you don't like watching movies. Go find something else to do with your time.
-
Really?
-
Adam West Batman for the 21st century
-
and it kept screaming, and screaming, and it screamed some more.
-
...he's left it naked, bruised and abused laying on soiled sheets, crying softly into the pillow, knowing it will never, ever feel clean again.
-
First trailer didn't do too much to excite me..but this does look great.
-
The Dark Knight was a comic book movie too and has the potential to garner Best Picture, Director, and Actor nominations. Not to mention it broke 29 box office records and will probably break DVD and Blu-ray sales records. It's already going to be the first Blu-ray screener, so that's record number 30.
-
That first trailer was the worst trailer ever made, but this one was better. . .not great, but better.
I'll wait for it on DVD and rent it. -
I had chili for lunch.
-
I have faith in Frank, to reveal his talent. He takes chances...and we don't have enough of that, in Hollywood, win or lose.
-
Scarlett Johanssen is lovely, but frank miller needs to keep his style to his own stupid (but fun) stories and leave Will Eisner THE HELL OUT OF IT.
What seemed cool with Sin City now seems more like surprise sodomy... a few people might like it, but most people will leave angry. -
But I have to say, the marked improvement since the first trailer is at least somewhat reassuring. If this doesn't review like ass, I might watch it.
-
I think The Dark Knight is remarkable; but with Sin City, Miller fell into an imitator of the real thing. The language and plotting of Sin City is a parody of the hard-boiled/noir style and it appears that he's mauling Eisner's genius into that same shallow mold. So sad that this had to be done to The Spirit.
-
but everything else looks pretty horrible... especially Sam Jackson... I can just hear him "I have had it with this motherfucking tie on this motherfucking Spirit!" yelled to the sound of Will Eisner rolling in his grave. Between this and Punisher War Zone, december is gonna be a huge step back for comic book movies after the year we've had.
As for Dark Knight Strikes Again, I am probably one of the only people who enjoyed it as an over the top Batman parody. But yeah, Miller has lost it. -

Will Eisner's Spirit...........Frank Miller's Modernization.....
by egamb
I see flashes of the over the top action that makes it Will Eisner's The Spirit............Frank probably felt the need to set it in the modern world.... it wouldn't be received as well as a period piece, hence the heavily armed helicopters and police force...and I think All Star Batman and Robin is a brilliant twist on the Dick Grayson story......how Batman's initial violent methods of fighting crime negatively affect his young ward, and how he comes to reign himself in. Miller will always have the film noirish hard ass theme to any project he does.....that's his style.....like Mickey Spillane and Dashiel Hammet. Either way, I'm definitely giving this a look.
-
As was the dialogue spoken in the trailer. Think I'll be missing this one.
-
Movifone's description says this is based on Will Eisner's acclaimed graphic novel, but doesn't say which of his dozen or so acclaimed graphic novels his comic strip character the Spirit appeared in. The trailer itself says it's based on Eisner's comic book hero, so I guess it's an adaptation of those short pieces that appeared in the two mid-60s Harvey reprint specials, since every other Eisner spirit comic was a reprint of the comic strip material. I don't get it. Instead of monkeying with the graphic novels and that obscure "what if Ebony grew up and the civil rights movement changed everything" stuff from that Harvey comic, why didn't Miller just do an adaptation of Will Eisner's acclaimed COMIC STRIP character the Spirit? And where was Ebony White in the trailer? is Miller saying that Ebony was secretly the Octopus?Frank Miller's the Spirit is to The Spirit as Howard Chaykin's The Shadow was to the Shadow. Which is to say, probably an interesting interpretation that completely violates the original source material. But as long as the tie's red...
-
Still looks like garbage. WHY WHY does it have to be CGI SHIT? WHY? Just shoot the damn thing in Chicago or NY, you can use lots of shadows, a cliche noir look, but...stop the RIDICULOUS GREEN SCREEN CGI-WORLD SHIT. That shot between the Spirit's feet as some dude falls off the fire escape is hilarious. Miller doesn't seem to be able to direct any better than he can write. Oh well....I'll save my 8 bucks and not watch this garbage.
-
Too bad about the PG-13, rating, though. Maybe they'll release a hard "R" DVD edition...
-
responded with "Gay" when that lady asked him what he was at the start of the trailer.
But seriously, this looks like a bag of meh. -
What a shitty, shitty looking movie... it amazes me that Miller, being as close as he was to Eisner, has the balls to shit all over the man's work by turning THE SPIRIT into a third-rate SIN CITY clone.
-
cuz this sure as shit aint eisner's spirit
-
No way in hell would he approve of this shit. So what Miller spent some time with the man and did some interviews together. Miller's like John McCain, he just does'nt get it.

-
I say it looks okay because if you were a fan of SIN CITY or 300, then congrats -- you're about to get more of the same. But as someone who loved the old Eisner SPIRIT comics, this is a hyperkinetic stylization of it all by way of SIN CITY and 300.Will I go see it? Probably. It looks fun and okay, worth a bucket of popcorn to get out of the house. But I'm an old comic fan, so the core of the movie will hold my interest. On the other hand, I can't see that being true of Joe Average moviegoer. Between the source material and the ultray stylization to this, I can't see it really have that great of an appeal. So sure, I'll see it, but I won't expect to find too many people sitting in the seats around me. Then again, that was true of SIN CITY too where 3/4 of the theater was empty on opening night...
-
Take a deep breath. Close your eyes. Try to imagine a man running around in WWII dressed in bright red white and blue tights...with little white wings on his temples...battling Nazi's....with a shield...that he throws at them. It simply doesn't work outside of comics. This is why Whedon abandoned Wonder Woman. Some things just don't work in the real world. Captain America is one of those things. There are 2 approaches to making a comic movie. Stick completely to the source material and bring the character to life exactly as he looks in the comic...or strip away every aspect of the character that keeps it from looking like it belongs in the real world. You have two scenarios...1 is the most irrational thing imaginable...a man running around a war theatre dressed in a skin tight candy colored suit flinging shields at people....the other is Nic Cage dressed head to toe in black leather doing kung fu. IT. WON'T. WORK. EVER.
-
so much cunting and whining and complaining on these fucking boards. you bitch about shit like this when movies like "bratz" get made. WTF do you whiny grrky cunts want? If you are all so awesome at directing/scripting/producing how come none of you are making epic films that are just so much better than this? cause your spoiled cunts. shut the fuck up and get over yourselves, it's a fucking movie.
-
Who *is* that fellow Sam Jackson is playing in the film?
'Cause, in the books, you never actually saw the villain's face. You only saw his gloved hands.
Not that Mr. Jackson doesn't look... well... ah...
About those gloves... -

There was some nice composition in that, but I don't know. Overall I think it just looks kinda cheap.
I had some issues with Sin City, but it looked gorgeous. It had a crispness to the monochromaticness. This seems really...fuzzy. Whoever made the Sky Captain analogy is dead on. That had the same fuzzy quality, only not so much. -
That could either be a good thing or a bad thing.

Why want Captain America work?
I just saying if Spider Man can Work with his red and blue spider webbed suit set in the real world modern time then why can't cap work?
For that matter, Bat Man, a man with Bat ears, X-Man, I want even talk about that, but it worked, and even Super Man if you want to go there. -
Kind of like if Joel Schumaker had balls. Not gayballs, either. Manballs. No way in hell I'll miss this, but I expect to stare into the screen trying as hard as I can to not say "WHAT THE FUCK?!" as I have with every new trailer.
-
Spiderman was just a teenager looking for a cool outfit to disguise himself with. Batman wanted the same, something to hide his identity that freaked out criminals. That excuse doesn't work with Captain America. For one thing he doesn't have to disguise himself AT ALL because he's a soldier, fighting in a war, thousands of miles from home. Not a private citizen operating outside the law like Spiderman or Batman. Their ability to do their thing would be completely compromised if people found out who they were. Captain America's would not. He'd just need a sound security system. No CO would ever send ANY kind of agent out in the field in the middle of a world war wearing bright vibrant colors. And I'm pretty sure they would require him to shoot and kill Nazi soldiers rather than mildly concuss them with giant shield. Every aspect of Captain America was fundamentally counter-productive to the job he was being asked to do. And the reason X-Men worked is because they went the 2nd route, they abandoned the look and costumes of the X-Men in favor of black leather and shades. They went the Nic Cage Superman route. Which I'm sure you can agree, if Captain America is changed into a black leather clad guy he will bear no resemblance to Captain America, which nullifies the point of even calling the movie 'Captain America'.
-
he's really not that great of an artist or storyteller.

translation: miller fucked up the source material but he's friends with rodriguez and tarantino SO IT MUST BE GOOD.
-
This has got to be the DUMBEST move in movie history. All we want to see, Frank, is SIN CITY 2. Thats it. Nobody cares about THE SPIRIT, and certainly NOBODY cares about a movie loaded with hot chicks WHO DONT GET NAKED BECAUSE ITS PG-13.
Frank, get off the coke, get off your ego, and get to work on the movie that people will actually pay to see -- SIN FUCKING CITY 2. Thanks. -
After watching the trailer, I offer my unconditional withdrawal of all support from this project, for the following reasons: "Get me a tie, and it better be red", "I'm gonna get El Spirito dead", "I have eight of everything". Though, the girls look fantastic. I still can't wait for the Watchmen, though.
-
Has Miller ever read the book? It has a sense of humor. This hasn't shown any so far. "Give me a tie and it better be red?"
Give me a fucking break. -
Even though this embodies everything that a comic-book noir SHOULD look and feel like, it's still too much. It's clearly not meant to be too serious. The Octopus? "I got eight of everything" with that stupid make up is too much.
But the imagery is good but it's still so ridiculously bizarre. Why did Mendes come out of the water like that and shoot him? How could that ever work in a scene?
It's just all over the place and while Sin City was comic-book surreal, this movie has people flying around, giant machine guns, plans flying onto streets. WHAT THE HELL!!!
However, I hold my final judgement off until it's released and I see it. This trailer definitely did peak my interest a LITTLE though. -
If your support is pervious, good luck finding anyone to accept it.
-
I thought 300 proved that. Also his recent works in the comic world has been terrible.
-
The possibilities are endless.
-
sin city, speed racer, even 300..get a fucking camera and a real set/locationfuck off with the cartoon graphics and colour timing cgi bullshit..your films will be forgotten in 5 years where as if they were actual films with a real feel, they would last for 100's of years
-
Listen to your friend Billy, he's a cool dude. No doubt. But this movie is still the serious suck.
-
You people are morons.
There is going to be a movie of The Spirit for Christ's sake.
The Spirit.
Whether or not this movie succeeds is largely irrelevant. It got made and that is mind boggling in and of itself.
Channeling the filmed adaptation of Sin City might feel and perhaps even is a cop out but suggesting that Miller has no talent (as some have done above) reveals ignorance so staggering it's unlikely the person saying so can stand upright or eat with utensils.
Miller is not infallible and it is more than likely that this movie will have a hard time connecting outside of its niche based on recognition of the character alone but all you morons with your "Do you want to see a magic trick?" t-shirts should take a moment to remember that Nolan's Batman wouldn't even exist without Miller.
-
While your points regarding Miller are valid, this move still looks like a total piece of crap that will be in the $2 cheapo movie theaters two weeks after it's release. I would say that IS relevant in that a crappy Spirit movie is by far worse than no Spirit movie. I'm sure Miller spent a lot of time and his own blood, sweat and tears to get this movie made. Unfortunately it takes those same things to push out a giant turd when you're constipated. By looks of these trailers, it seems that that's more along the lines of what Miller has produced here.
-
...like wrap a toilet around your neck. Sorry, this one will totally bomb, at least it gave Miller a boner for a couple of month, shooting with all the hot chicks. And so will it to me, when it comes out for rental.

I mean one time its OHHH I love that guys stuff OHHHHHH and then a little popularity creeps in and its OHHHH I hate his stuff now cause other people like it and I can only like something if I am in the minority so I can feel all special and cool. Like for example with Tarantino...he's loved, then hated, loved, then hated. And why? Who knows. It's NOT mind boggling a Spirit movie was made. Sin City was successful enough that when Miller told the money boys "I can do more of the same", they jumped at it. Simple. Not mind boggling. It IS the era of comic book movies after all. And to say those who pan Miller are ignorant IS ignorant. Whatever talent Miller MAY have as a writer has long since disappeared. Sit down, reread The Dark Knight Returns. It's not that good. Admit it. It's stuffed with hoary cliche and is clunky in structure and execution. What Miller DID do to change the comics industry was make every budding writer think " ok, lemme stuff this script with violence, foul language and a dour outlook" - that's it. Sin City - movie and comics - are so bad they're laughable. It was obvious Miller either has never read good detective fiction, or if he has, he is unable to comprehend it. Period. If anyone thinks Sin City is any kind of inventive detective fiction, you're dead wrong and uneducated. Now - try reading All Star Batman and Robin, TRY. It's shit. It's awful. It's almost like a joke. Miller's writing is a parody of whatever talent he may have demonstrated in the past. So now...he takes a legendary comic creation, one that would be pretty simple to make, to capture in tone and feel and atmosphere, and just filters through his own bullshit lenses. Judging by the trailer, which is NOT the movie but certainly does show the mood and intent of the film, Miller cares not a bit for the legacy of The Spirit, he just wanted to do what he wanted to do, to hell with what would have been the right thing to do, which is do a faithful adaptation of the comics.
-
This Sin City 2 trailer doesn't look too bad, but when is a trailer going to be released for The Spirit?
-
I met them at the X files premiere in L.A. @ the chinese theatre... look her up she is some tv actress, can't remember her name since she is no one lol btw he is getting old, had trouble going down a couple of stairs.
-
It's a familiar refrain to denigrate someone for the sometimes poor and infinite imitations of their signature works (or comparative failures like ASBR) but dismissing The Dark Knight Returns as a hoary cliche or the quality of Miller's body of work, influence and contribution to the medium is stupendously naive.
This movie looks middling I will agree and too visually derivative of the Sin City style Rodriguez created with Miller but Frank has probably earned the right to make this movie the way he wants to (I doubt they spent more than was reasonable) and I'm fairly confident the character/setting would not be treated as deferentially by virtually anyone else, despite whatever license might be used in this adaptation. -
Definately a step up from Trailer #1. Much more defined story. This is looking pretty... well, pretty. Like 'Sin City' high-contrast and photo-artificial angles meets 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' desaturated and fluid movement. But definately has Frank Miller's style!
Not to mention Eva and Sam!
Just pretty...
Dialogue seems a big corny for mainstream, but something this stylized can make it work! -
regarding frank. if this movie came out ten years ago all of you frank haters would be so psyched for this movie. lets try an
unbiased approach like adults.
