TV is where a lot of the best acting opportunities are

    by the podosphere

and where a lot of the best on-screen acting is happening. Side-by-side with some of the worst reality tripe ever to disgrace our airwaves, we've had easily more than a dozen amazing series in the past couple of decades. And yeah, I'll include Buffy in that.

Nobody can blame Gellar for sparking to an intriguing small-screen project. She's got dough; she may feel she's at a point where she'd like to tackle something different than another genre thing like Buffy or horror movies.

    by mr. profit

She gave the show 7 years of her life, doing 14 hour days, and working to give you guys a good show. She was almost always in EVERY scene. And you fuckers get mad that she didn't sign on for another season? She fulfilled her contract agreement and moved on. Maybe you all should stop your bitching and move on too. You all talk crazy but if Gellar and Whedon got together to make a Buffy film, you'd all line up to see it. I actually bumped into Gellar in NYC and she was really nice to me. She asked if I knew where there was a Starbucks, and I told her where and she was grateful and sweet. Glad she realized that TV is where the good roles are. Hopefully HBO will be a good fit for her.

    Reply to Talkback

  • FIREFLY lasted half a season and got the SERENITY movie. BUFFY lasted seven years and gets a Dark Horse comic book series, which while admittedly great, pales in comparison to a movie. And let's face it, the only cast member who's busy at the moment is Alyson Hannigan, so why hasn't this been made already?

it had more episodes in the years beginning '20' than in the years beginning '19'.

as a fan of Buffy, i think SMG was entitled to walk away from it when she did. Seven years is a long time for any actor to be locked into a role, no matter how great it is. I also think the timing worked - season 7 was a great way to end the series.

    Charisma Carpenter...

    by xsi kal

...is guest starring on Greek. Not sure what else she is up to these days.

SMG essentially left Buffy to do Scooby Doo and JRPGs. By that last season, I think most everyone was sick of her character anyway, although it's hard to tell how much of that was just her character being written to be a bore.

I preferred Angel, for the most part, (with the exception of season 4, and most anything having to do with Connor). Boreanaz moved on just fine though. Bones is a reasonably popular show, and my wife and I enjoy it for what it is; another pseudo-crime procedural that actually has some humor in it.
Of the three, Firefly was by far my favorite, though Serenity pretty much killed any chance of seeing more. Still, there's Dollhouse coming up, and I hope it does not suck.
As for this TV vehicle for SMG? Eh.

ah, what the hell, Ill raise the arguement

    by rocklobster800

Alyson Hannigan was waaaaay better than Sarah Michelle Gellar on Buffy. Not only was she the cutest piece of tail, but she was a better written, more likeable and more interesting character, performed better by a better actress-and Ill throw down the age old argument by stating she was the hottest on the show. Thats right, over Buffy, over Cordelia and over Faith. Buffy was one of those shows that, although I LOVED it (well most of it),weirdly the lead character was the least appealing aspect of the show(unlike say, Twin Peaks where Cooper was always a brillant and intriguing lead). The dialogue, plot lines and most importntly, the supporting cast MADE that show for me. Buffy was more a catalyst so I could check out the stuff going on AROUND her-Willow, Xander and Giles dynamic kept me through season one, Spike, Dru and "Angelus"made season 2 one of the best seasons of any show on tv ever, and the exploits of the scooby gang in season 3 were always more entertaining that what Buffy was up to. and I reckon season 4 was fairly hit and miss (cough Riley cough) but the episodes of Xander and Spike living together were priceless...season 5 began the steady descent though, of the show in general and particualrly the character of buffy herself-I couldnt stand her at all by season 6. What was I talking about there....? Oh yeah-Alyson Hannigan is hotter than SMG...DISCUSS!

    What I love....

    by thewoodpecker

is that the mere mention of Buffy/SMG will automatically bring out a more serious TB than pretty much any other topic, Supes and Batman included. For my two cents, Gellar was never as interesting as Whedon's set-up and universe. Unfortunately, Joss has been exposed as a one trick pony. He's really good at creating drama, but it all seems to be the same. I'll include Dollhouse in this, and if it lasts a full season I'll be surprised. Anyway, I agree with Rock Lobster; what happened around Buffy was always more interesting than Buffy herself. Xander, until the midway through the 6th season, was my favorite Whedon character. After the mess that was S6, Wesley became my fave. Moreover, HBO and Gellar will probably not be a good fit. She won't go nude, and how exactly does someone cast her as a porn star when she won't drop her top? HBO will give the show more time than the networks, but I won't subscribe to the channel just because she's on their show.

but I DO blame "The First" for bringing the show down. Why have a villain who never wants to have funny banter AND can't be in a fight scene, on a show ABOUT a banter-spewing fighter? And thewoodpecker makes a good point about Wesley being one of the best Whedon characters, but I say the title goes to Anya since she (and sometimes Andrew) were all that was bearable about season 7. Plus she said "...or maybe midgets..."

...I saw it before I did Firefly and it was the strength of the film that caused the addiction to the show that lasted through my first year at university. The one beef I have with the film is that it should have been Jayne with Shepherd Book when he died-look at their dynamic on the show and you'll get what I mean...it would give Jayne at least a bit of dramatic depth to his character, which Mal already had plenty of without. But then again, maybe non fans wouldnt have got that scene, not bothered to follow up by watching the series and then a perfectly awesome film wouldnt have got a sequel it more than deserved....oh wait a minute...

    The movie

    by thewoodpecker

Had better be made soon. Nick Brendon will be 38 next year (and is looking the worse for wear, guess rehab didn't take), SMG will be 32, AH is 34, need I continue? 18 months to get this puppy started or forget it.

Well, it's on HBO ... so maybe they'll find a way

    by itchy

to make her show her tits. They're probably past their prime, but I still want to see them. And grab them. And fuck her in the naughty place.

    That bird-nosed bimbo can't act.

    by zerocorpse

She sucks in everything she does, which is why you see her in fewer projects than even Alyssa Milano.

    Jennifer Aniston is next.

Thus begins the inevitable slide back into TV-Land for these non-movie stars.

A better question: what the fuck is wrong with HBO?

    by fiester

This sounds like another generic, touchy-feely piece of shite. Who's mom is running the show over there these days?

    Her start

    by mjbok1

Her start was her emmy winning portrayal of a young sexpot on All My Children. Anybody that is bashing her for leaving Buffy behind, it was seven years, and though loved by its fans, it never was mainstream. More people saw her in the first week of Scooby Doo than on any week while she was on TV.

    Sounds like a yawn

    by drath

Very dull premise, but hey, there's a lot of hit shows I'm not interested in, so whatever.

Ha HA - I KNEW it!

    by annoyyou

Gellar was always so disdainful of her role as Buffy - she never wanted to talk about it on talk shows, as if it was beneath her. Well, after a lackluster film career, look who's back, hat in hand! I love it! And she's not the dewy young thing she once was, so I guess it's "District Attorney" for her ("There are three roles for women in Hollywood: babe, district attorney, and Driving Miss Daisy" - The First Wives' Club)! Love it.
