Stan Lee spilling dish on Marvel Comic projects'

Published at:  Jun 24, 1999 1:41:47 AM CDT

Alrighty folks... Here's a little report without too many facts or new tidbits from Stan Lee, one of the founding fathers of Marvel comics, dishing out his typical vague bits. Stan says they've found a new director for SPIDER-MAN. Ok... Interesting, I can't imagine that they've nailed down a director for that film that's 'equally if not more exciting' than James Cameron and SONY hasn't screamed it from the top of the lot. The last two names that I heard mentioned was a really vague rumor of Ron Howard's interest and a bit about Ridley Scott's son. But you know what the ol hairs on the back of my neck are saying. Now this is complete 'SPIDER SENSE' speculation that'll most likely drive alot of you people utterly insane with fear... But, it just dawned on me, and I've got to put it out there.

What major action director just dropped out of project that seemed to be moving along smoothly? Michael Bay. In the world of Stan Lee... I could see him saying "equally if not more exciting" about Bay... But that's sheer speculation on my part and I'm sure a lot of you will scream at me. But I do know this... Bay has a very strong relationship with Sony based on BAD BOYS, and Sony would love to woo him away from the wonderful world of Disney. It wouldn't be Emmerich and Devlin, because they are moving forward with PATRIOT, and SONY wants Spidey done faster than that would allow.

As for movement on the FANTASTIC FOUR movie... I know that Chris Columbus' company has been talking to various directors about the film, and that they've been in that wonderfully creative phase of filmmaking called BUDGETING! Personally, my pick for director on this project would NEVER make it, and that's Spielberg. Personally I hold it's the perfect cool Spielberg film... But he's too grownup for that film right now. Tis a shame.

Enough of me trying to pad the article with my speculative leaps of fancy, onto the one that made you all True Believers... Here's Stan...

Hey Harry, Polar Bear here, i was watching Big Thinkers on ZDTV and Stan Lee
was on talking about his Stanlee.net. Well some guy on a netcam asked him
about movies and he mentioned Spider-Man and how they've dropped Cameron but
that they have a director who's equally if not more exciting but he won't
give the name also said they're finishing the script he also mentioned X-Men
and a Fantastic Four movie in the works along w/ the new animated series
glen's reported on, well just thought i'd let ya know =)

PB

P.S. HARRY HERE: Check out Stan's site... It's pretty good and he has a neat little comic and movie news section of his site that you should check out!

    by justin sane

Hmmm... I wonder who they'll get to play Doctor Doom... well, I know there's NO WAY IN HELL that Leo's going to be mentioned for the role (although he would make a passable Johnny Storm... but he'd never do it since it's not a "starring" role, per se), so does anyone have any DOOM suggestions? My mind is BLANK... I can't think of anyone right now who could pull it off...

    by the tall man

What are the Wachowski Bros. doing next? After their kick ass MATRIX, I'm ready to see ANYTHING they do! Actually, if they did it, I could with good concious say "as exciting or even better!" Call me foolish, but I got from MATRIX what I hoped to get from EPISODE 1. Now, Mikey Bay on the other hand? Say it aint so Stan! Say it aint so!

    Doctor Doom

    by wannabe

To me the choice seems obvious- Jurgen Prochnow. While I admit he is not the biggest name on the planet, he has experience in the genre, plus his European roots match Doom's.
As for the FF, I see someone like Kevin Costner or Dennis Quaid as Mr. Fantastic, Mira Sorvino as Invisible Girl, Mark-Paul Gosselaar as the Torch, and the voice of Stallone as the Thing (with a Stallone cameo in the beginning as Ben Grimm).
    Just an idea.

    David Koepp

    by the cars

I think as long as they have David Koepp working on the script, they may as well have him direct the thing-- he does have a good visual style that I think would work for scenes of Spidey swinging through New York. I know they probably wouldn't entrust the project with a newer director like him, but I do think that after STIR OF ECHOES comes out, he'll be getting all kinds of offers.

    by jar jar binks

spider man is a cool charactor and all, but he's a little boring, he has all these cool powers climbing walls, spidey senses, and web spinning and stuff
but the cartoon was always crappy and the old 70's show is good cause its so cheesy, but its sill kinda boring, they better have some mighty fine tricks up their sleeves or i dont think id care less about this movie. peter parker living with his aunt b and being a reporter, he's a boring dude, then he puts his mask on, crawls up a wall, shoots a web. they better put every damn villain he has in this movie, especially green goblin and doc octopus cause they the only things that can save this movie

    by schmegma

To the above posting, yes Bay dropped out of the PHONE BOOTH. That was basically the studio wanting to make some boring $10 million movie and jamming Michael in and not listening to his ideas. You can blame the studio execs for that one...on the other hand Jim Carrey just seems a little too old to be Spidey, Johnny would be good.

    What do people think?

    Michael Bay

    by ibkeeng

First of all let me express my profound disappointment at the news that it wasn't an airplane that Michael Bay dropped out of. And as for you, Schmegma, let it suffice to say that your equating a 10 mil. budget with a boring movie makes it perfectly clear where you're coming from (although I'm sure that- for Bay- 10 mil. would just mean a quieter kind of boring than his usual fare, with fewer explosions and less camera coverage). And as for the Wachowski bros., They are the ONLY alternative to Cameron, and a better one at that.

Depp is way too old to portray Peter Parker. We're going for a teenager here folks!!!While not an old man Depp definitely looks in his thirties.Heath Ledger("10 Things I Hate About You")was recently interviewed in a magazine and said HE was in the running for the role.I think right now the best directors for the film would be either the Warchowski Bros. or Steven Norrington("Blade").

This guy does not know a good script from his @$$! Keep in mind, he approved the horrible Incredible Hulk films with Daredevil and Thor as guest stars. Not to mention the several HORRIBLE cartoons that lack in quality animation, and change around character origins. Stan Lee is an anathema to the comic book world. Keep him away from any and all comic-to-film properties.

    by dennis

I don't want to see a FF movie. There's just not enough excitement with their origin and their early battles to pack into one film. This comic was sort of boring to me when it first came out. It didn't really have any punch. They are the kind of characters that have become interesting over time, and time is what they need to make the FF dynamic. Instead, it would make a fun Hercules/Xena kind of T.V. series. They're more of a family, so you could get into lots of relationship-oriented stories that wouldn't seem too off base. They have a tireless amount of cool villians they could use. Let Michael Bay direct that. Personally, I wish the man would fall off the face of the earth, or that I would never have to see him direct another feature film in my lifetime. Either one.

Oh God, No! The director of the epileptic seizure editing style ruining the coolest old school hero around. Let me guess, Leo's being offered the part of Peter Parker. Maybe we'll be lucky and they'll "fix up" the stale character of the Green Goblin and give the part to Ben Affleck or Will Smith (though personally I see him as a revamped Kingpin in a Daredevil movie staring Vince Vaughn). I've been reading about supposed Marvel comics movies since I was a kid and I'll believe it when I see it and probably realize what I think I've known for awhile, Hollywood and the dollar will drain the spirit out of pretty much everything they touch....this just in Joel Shumacher has expressed interest in the Web Slinger...word is he's got some great new costume designs, something about nipples and a "web thong"...we'll see

    My FF Picks...

    by darqueguy

I would probably go with Jeff Goldblum as Mr. Fantastic, Charlize Theron as the Invisible Woman, Mark-Paul Gossler as the Human Torch and Bruce Campbell as Ben Grimm (with the Thing CGI, natch). As for Doom...I kind of like Ralph Fiennes in the role. His work in Schindler's List could go a long way to his portrayal of Doom as something other than an over-the-top meglomaniac. For future movies...why not Val Kilmer as Black Bolt, Julianne Moore as Medusa, Russel Crowe as Maximus, Gary Oldman as the Wizard, Jim Carrey as the Impossible Man and Verne Troyer (Mini-Me) as the Mole Man. God, I'm gonna get creamed for that last one.

Darth Siskel - nice comment about Bay. However, I don't know about Burton helming this one. The guy is one of my favorite directors, we all know what he did with Batman, but he wouldn't be one of my picks to direct Spidey. The Wachowski Brothers sound good to me...

Max Von Sydow-Dr. Doom, but that would only be the voice since Doom would just be wearing that armor suit the whole time

    Check out my Spidey cast...

    by inphreak

This I think is the smartest way to go:

Peter Parker/Spiderman: Nicholas Brendon (Xander on Buffy the Vampire Slayer... if you watch the show, and you should, you know exactly why he should play Parker. He's got the handsome/dork look going for him, he's got the sense of humor and comic timing, he's got that brooding quality necessary for the character, and he's well-built.

Gwen Stacy: Winona Ryder (Remember her with the blonde hair in Edward Scissorhands? And she can still pass for college age! And for those of you who don't like her, hey, she dies anyway!)

Norman Osborn/Green Goblin: Gary Oldman (Can you think of anyone else better suited to this role? He's over-the-top, he's not very attractive, he's a powerful screen presence, and to top it off, he's one of the greatest fucking actors alive!)

Aunt May: Who gives a shit?

    Uncle Ben: Ditto.

    J. Jonah Jameson: Al Pacino (Think of the make-up in Godfather III, add a mustache, and voila'! Difficult to get for a supporting role, but give him enough money and let him do his own thing and you've got a great J.J.J.!)

Mary Jane Watson: Rose McGowan (Hey, she's hotter than hell, she's a good actress, and she desperately needs a hit! And maybe she can get Marilyn to contribute to the soundtrack...)

Joe "Robbie" Robertson: Laurence Fishburne (He is not going to become the hot commodity that some people think because of The Matrix, and in a good supporting role in a big movie would be more good exposure.)

There are some other incidental characters like Flash Thompson and Captain Stacy if they want the film to conform to the mythology of the comic, but they could be unknowns, or character actors. No big thing. But if anyone out there is reading this besides all us "dorks" on AICN, maybe like a casting exec over at Sony, HEED MY WORDS!!!! Don't go for the easy DiCaprio/Affleck/ Prinze Jr. casting coup! Take your time and cast this flick right! You'd still make serious bank!!!

Am I the only one alive who thought Tim Burton did a lousy job with "Batman?" It was lacking action sequences, was 15 minutes too long and too dark even for a Batman film. The second Batman,"Batman Returns" made Shumacher's "Batman & Robin" look like oscar worthy material. Bay isn't that bad of a director, I know Armaggeddon sucked bad but The Rock was much better. Jim Carrey is too old to be Spidey people, get it through your thick skulls. The one actor who maybe is too old but could pull it off is Edward Norton. In "Primal Fear" he looked very young clean shaven and with his toned down physique. Plus, he isn't too pretty to be Parker, everyone , including that bad cartoon on FOX, seems to forget Parker is a total geek.

If James Cameron isn't making this film, there's only one other director on the planet who can make a super-cool spectacle on a level even approaching that of Jimmy-Boy's -- Michael Bay. I'm sort of disappointed he isn't making "Phone Booth", but a Michael Bay "Spider-man" is destined to be tops. Does he remind anyone else of Orson Welles? (Kidding.)

There have been quite a lot of insults to Stan Lee on this talkback. Given that if hadn't jumpstarted the comic scene back when it was dying in the late 50's /early 60's there would probably be no comics scene today.
You fishcakes wouldn't recognize true talent anyway. Bloody pricks.

  • Sike! Well, I can't say I agree with some of the casting suggestions. FANTASTIC FOUR: Jeff Goldblum and Charlize Theron? Uh, a little age gap there dontcha think? Personally, I don't care if the FF gets made into a film. I'd rather see a film just about DR. DOOM with the FF as a supporting cast. SPIDERMAN: Nicholas Brendon is the one, or go with an unknown. I'm not sure Prinze would be so awful, but he looks like a teenager to me. Brendon could play a Peter Parker in college. Hell no to Winona Ryder. She's just not right for the part. Monica Potter LOOKS like Gwen Stacy. MJ - I hate that character. Anyone who calls a guy, "tiger" should be shot. But, McGowan is as good as a suggestion as any. COMIC-TO-FILM MOVIES I'D RATHER SEE: Daredevil with Matt Damon as Murdoch. (Go ahead, flame me ya bastards). THE INHUMANS: Has anyone checked out the Marvel Knights version of this yet? It's incredible. I like the idea of Kilmer as Black Bolt and Julianne Moore as Medusa.

If your hunch is right Harry (and i pray it isnt) then i will be forced (by my instinctuall sense of right and wrong to lead a mass boycott of spider man. As big a fan as I am I must acknowledge the sheer nature of how morally and ethically wrong it is that Mike Bay is directing a film. The film schools mustve accidentally accepted him because there is NO ONE less qualified to weave a cinematic story, especially one as epic as Spider Man. Mike Bay is the worst director in the world. They are so juevenile its no wonder theyre blockbusters. Its sad to think that this man has the means to make any motion picture when there are plenty of film makers who are far more talented than him that need his budget. In my opinion he is the antichrist of Hollywood and an embodyment of everything wrong and sensationalized about society.
