CBS Orders 2nd Season Of Canada’s FLASHPOINT!!

Published at:  Sep 19, 2008 6:06:05 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

A Canadian drama scripted by non-U.S. writers that CBS ordered just as the Writers Guild of America was threatening to strike, “Flashpoint” will get a second season on the eye net.

Ratings weren’t spectacular for the SWATish cop show starring Enrico Colantani (“Veronica Mars”) and former Pink Power Ranger Amy Jo Johnson (“Felicity”), but the network gets the show on the cheap since it’s a co-production with the Great White North’s CTV.

Also? CBS loves cop shows.

    Is the show any good?

    by xaximus

I watched the first few episodes, but wasn't compelled to watch more. I didn't think it was a bad show, but it seem to have the stench of Canadian television in the background (this coming from a Canuck). I wanted to like it more, as I became a big fan of Colantani due to Veronica Mars.

i'm canadian as well and least personally, i dont think its the "canadian-ness" thats wrong with all these canadian shows. its that we dont have the same sorta budget and people putting these shows together so they tend to be cheap and sucktastic. but also, i dont know if we use different cameras and/or film but canadian shows just look different, there's something about the picture quality that anytime i see a show i can tell 99% of the time thats its canadian without even knowing anything about it. that even spills into canadian videos, they just look...cheaper or something. lol

    by bouncy x

there's also the fact that i guess most of our good actors went to america and became famous because most canadian shows seem to share the same pool of actors. lol i guess thats partly because most shows are filmed in either toronto or vancouver but yeah...i may not know names but its always the same faces.

I've seen good Canadian TV. Regenesis, Intelligence, The Border. Flashpoint, which I gave four chances, is just a blandly written and acted, bad show. Perfect for CBS (Couldn't Be Suckier).

but is the goal of canadian television to be totally indistinguishable from american television? i'm just curious about the original statement, and i've noticed similar comments when it comes to canadian television - like, "oh it's canadian, it MUST suck..."
is the acting that bad, or is it just that their accents are noticeable?
I'm just asking questions, i think flashpoint is garbage... :)

as a Canadian I like some Canadian shows. I like that I can tell they are Canadian I want to be able to tell. Trailer Park Boys, The Border, Degrassi (and I mean old school Degrassi not that new shit). I like American shows, Aussie shows, British shows. I mean what is it about American's hating Canadian shows sometimes....they are flashy enough? Maybe but I would rather watch Flashpoint than most "nice" looking but shit shows.

I used to work in Canadian dramatic TV. The reason Canadian stuff looked different until recently was that European and Canadian productions were often shot on super 16mm film, instead of super 35mm which is used for most US TV series and feature films. With 16mm, because the negative has a smaller surface area, the picture is less sharp and the depth of field is poor relative to the higher quality image made from a 35mm negative. However, things have changed. Networks in the US, UK and Canada are finding it easier to share production costs (you are seeing the same thing with feature films when major studios coproduce). As an example, part of the budget for CBS's CSIs came from a Canadian production house called Alliance - or at least it used to until Alliance was bought by CanWest. Anyway, my guess is that the CSI US/Canadian coproductions worked out so well that CBS has looked north for more bland programming in the hope that lighting will strike twice. Because the costs are shared, you are seeing more content shot in 35mm in Canada and oversees. Second, more series are doing away with film entirely and moving to the all digital 24P format. 24P looks very similar to 35mm on your TV, but is less expensive to use, so again you are starting to see Canadian content look more like programming from the US. Shows shot in Canada like Battlestar Galactica (24P) or XFiles (35mm) look at lot like their US produced counterparts. Shows shot in Canada like Road to Avonlea (16mm) or Degrassi High (16mm) or Due South (16mm) have a more European look. Hope I did not put anyone to sleep with all the audio visual club talk.

    by digitalcos

But, I gotta say. I think there's something even more to it. Because I live in a border town, and when I watch even the US produced shows, even animated ones like The Simpsons for instance, on the canadian stations I can see a difference.Don't ask me to explain how it looks different. It's subtle, but it's there. I don't know, it's almost like some sorta PAL conversion or something.Or maybe I'm just imagining it.

he's doing a fine job.The show overall is harmless enough. I've been watching it steadily.Have trouble buying the pink ranger chick though. Every weapon she carries is like twice her size, and she looks like she's gonna fall over from the weight of it.Ya know how some actors just look natural with guns? It just looks right? Like Kiefer for instance. Say what you want about the show or his acting in general, but ya gotta admit, you put a gun in his hand and it just looks "right". Her? Not so much.

    by clarence boddicker

It's true...Canuck TV looks different! The CBC has always depressed me with it's incessant need to portray everything in mottled greys, blues, and browns. At least CTV has started to promote their network with VIBRANT colors that don't induce depression. Now don't get me wrong, there's fine television on both networks...but the presentation could use improvement. Maybe it's a geographical problem...population density isn't nearly as high in Canada as it is in the States...who knows?

That's interesting you say that. I travel to the US a few times a year for work or vacation and I have never noticed a difference between US programming broadcast form Canada vs US programming broadcast from the US... But I never really paid attention. I bet you can guess what I'm going to do the next time I'm in a hotel in Buffalo NY or another border city!? It's not a PAL conversion thing because as far as I know, Canada's NTSC technology is similar, if not identical, to American NTSC broadcast specs. If it's something like the Simpsons, I wonder if you are watching a simulcast originating from the US. If the source is a satellite feed from the US, then perhaps when the signal goes from the US Source (FOX)-->Satellite-->Canadian Broadcaster (CanWest)-->US Cable Provider-->Your Home there may be picture degradation on analogue cable? Not sure... but an interesting observation.

Actually, now that I think about it a bit more, I wonder if it is the way foreign networks are carried and compressed on domestic cable. For example the 3 big Canadian broadcasters (CBC/CTV/CanWest-Global) and their specialty channels look fine here. But, SPIKE has always looked blocky and compressed. It has improved somewhat, but when SPIKE first aired in Canada it did not look much better than YouTube.

Canadian show I remember was "Night Heat" on CBS Latenight back in the eighties with Scott Hylands and Jeff Wincott- not a bad show and it was the only thing on after working the mid-shift, couldn't afford cable. Other good Canadian shows were "Due South" and "The Highlander."

    Worth Watching

    by leftfoot

It's never going to be the best show on TV, but, face it, it's better than most.
The one story telling move it gets right, it focuses on the moment. That's what that work is at it's most intense.
The last episode did have some story problems. The bad guy escapes through his basement into an extensive underground tunnel system that leads to train tracks? What? (What are the zoning and building requirements like in that residential neighborhood?)
SRU always has blueprints and layouts of buildings. How did they not know about something that unusual?
But, I enjoy the show. Enrico Colantoni is good casting. When the show first started I read that his brother is a Toronto cop.

Well no they just suck to the haters. Oh wait I forgot, all the fanboy geeks who think they are too hip for words say CBS sucks except for Moonlight boo hoo bring it back boo hoo. Canadian Television

    by kaelomont

I'm Canadian - never watched flashpoint. Hopefully it doesn't suffer from 'We're in Canada' disease but it doesn't sound like it as this would probably make it hard to market in the usa. What I mean is that older Canadian shows tried so hard to be Canadian that the characters would announce in their dialog every five minutes "we are in Toronto/Ottawa/Halifax/Vancouver/etc." or something to that effect. It was rediculous - New Yorkers don't say "hey, in case you're wondering, we are cops in New York" all the time - I wonder if it was a Canadian content rule - I seem to remember it happening on shows alot growing up. It has improved vastly over time.

It would be nice to see more dramas with high production values like the US has. Canada can do it with comedy (The Newsroom, Made in Canada, Rick Mercer Report(although this is kind of a Daily Show ripoff, but a good ripoff), but not many Dramas over the past few decades. I haven't seen the Border either but I think I will start watching as I've heard good things. What sucks to me is that CBC Radio puts on really good comedies and dramas and I keep saying "TURN THIS INTO A TV SHOW YOU MORONS!!!" but strangely my radio doesn't obey my shouting requests...

    by tangcameo

Another Canuckian here. I've watched it and it's about as deep, dynamic and meaningful as Criminal Minds. We'd send down our better shows but the CBS censors would have trouble with them.

Codmyr - This would explain why shows from the 70s and 80s are so bleached now that when the film is replayed on tv now they looked like they were filmed in the 60s. Where are these 16mm shows stored? In the boiler room at the CBC?

Big Tuna - Ah! 80s CTV television when they sold their souls, and our apathy, to Sonny Grosso and Larry Jacobson. Good times. Good times.

    Tangcameo - Canadian TV

    by kaelomont

It's just frustrating - I grew up listening to Royal Canadian Air Farce - they were still kind of funny when they eventually ended up on TV but their best years were behind them - they were way funnier when they were still on Radio. Do you remember Booster MaCrane PM on the radio?(probably almost 20 years back now - eek - that long? I loved that show). Hysterical. Why not make it a TV show? And what about shows like Afganada? I realize that radio has of course much smaller budgets but if they put this stuff on people would watch it. Although not everything would translate to TV. The Vinyl Cafe probably wouldn't work on TV.

What are your favorite Canadian shows, by the way?

No question... CBS would have REAL problems with something like Kenny vs Spenny, Rent-A-Goalie, Trailer Park Boys or Billable Hours. Anything produced by Showcase Television would never make the grade on CBS... other than that CSI stuff they cater to 2 different demographics.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Codmyr - Even DaVinci got censored a lot on CBS Sunday nights. Plus it's kind of like Lost, where you have to watch every episode to follow it.
Kael - Don't remember Booster but I was still in school back then. Someone tried turning Vinyl Cafe into a US cartoon but that project disappeared of the radar. CBC Radio was full of good shows - remember Vanishing Point and Mystery Project? Air Farce hasn't been good since Broadfoot quit the show and they moved to TV. And God I MISS Gzowski (radio not tv hehe). Favourite Canuck TV shows: Corner Gas, Seeing Things, Friday the 13th, Davinci's Inquest (City Hall was a yawn), Frightenstein, Putnam's Prairie Emporium (ya ya I know), Trailer Park Boys (up to and including the season with Rita McNeil), 9B, and probably a few more I can't think of right now.
