Four RED DWARF Specials In 2009??

Published at:  Sep 19, 2008 6:07:13 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

“Red Dwarf” actor Robert Llewellyn told somebody named Michael McIntyre that four half-hour “Red Dwarf” specials are being produced to air next year, 10 years after the series ended.

"It's very new news to me - I really only fully heard the details yesterday," said Llewellyn. "We're doing four new shows with the original cast. Two of them are going to be, like, proper episodes of Red Dwarf. One of them is so exciting I've been asked not to say anything about that because other people will steal the idea - and it is a great idea, quite challenging for us as performers. And the other one is a kind of behind-the-scenes-y... the truth. There's been so many rumours and gossip about Red Dwarf, about whether there's going to be a movie and whether we all get on, all those things... The downside for me, which is just dawning on me now, is I've got to do the 'rubber' thing again, which I haven't done for ten years."

    Chris Barrie's Hair

    by darth_tarantino

How can a man who had such massives amounts of hair on his head have gone so horrible bald? I wonder if they'll be able to make a decent wig for him. Frankly, after series 7 I lost all hope of Red Dwarf being as good as it once was. I'd watch these specials (if they happen) out of a perverse curiosity to see just how much more they can fuck the whole thing up...but I don't hold out much hope for a grand 'return to form' from Doug Naylor.

    The other show:

    by badboymason

Only thing I can think of really is a re-imagining of the pilot or something? If it ever comes time to do this show over, the first book adaption of the series really does a great job at taking the small scale of the show and seperate episodes and making it a one-story, full-scale space adventure... it's great, taking about 50% TV show material and 50% new, and if it had been written on it's own apart from the TV show think it would have been a very highly regarded work in it's own right.

You speak the truth, sir. The first 2 novels, I would venture, are excellent and if ever there was to be a remake of Red Dwarf, those books should be the blueprint. One of the annoying things about the later series was how the continuity in the books got mixed up with the continuity of the series. Remember the series 6 clunker about how Lister DID date Kochanski (which was only in the book, not the show)?

a ten year gap and all they're doing is 2 "regular" half hour episodes, some behind the scenes special and something else? you'd think they would make a tv movie or miniseries or dtv movie or something.

They couldn't get together for a film, Craig Charles is a crazy junkie and it's been a long time since the last episode. I wonder if it'll happen at all.

New Blackadder?! Never going to happen, my friend. Atkinson prefers not to work (or so he claims) and Elton stopped being funny years ago. 'Back and Forth' was hardly worthy of inclusion in the Blackadder cannon, so I'm not rollin' with you on this one. No more Blackadder!!

Like I said last time, they should use this opportunity to do a proper finale.
But the linked article says they're hoping to jumpstart the franchise with this an make MORE series. (Which we know won't happen, if history is any guide.)
Seriously boys, you stopped being funny once Grant & Naylor broke up. If you two guys can't work together, then give the show a proper dignified finale.

    by dreadpirateroberts

Look, they obviously want to make more but need to convince others (and maybe themselves) that there is truly interest and not just empty nostalgia. So if these do well, we might get another series. If not, it probably ends there. I agree the last two series were less than great, but they were still fun for me anyway, and would pay to see them back together again.

I understand a lot of the negative feedback related to this news. But just think how good new Red Dwarf episodes could be if they handle it right. They've had so long to come up with script ideas that surely it's gonna live up to the expectation. Sure, it could end up being as shitty as a shit sandwich, but i really hope they nail it. I grew up on Red Dwarf. So for all the times it's made me luagh, i'm willing to give this a chance.

    "A third generation of fans"

    by supertoyslast

Do they really think that a significant number of new people are becoming fans because of the DVDs and repeats on Dave? They once got up to 8 million viewers on BBC2 (depending on how the ratings are counted). The DVDs are bought mainly by existing fans and I'd be surprised if the repeats on Dave get much more than 100,000 viewers. Sure, new people are getting into it - but not enough to relaunch the franchise. If there was any chance of a new full-scale series of Red Dwarf it would already have been on BBC2.I too wish that this had been taken as an opportunity to give the show an ending. The movie was gonna be a reboot - but they should have ended the show first! I will just scream if the new episodes end on yet another cliffhanger. Even so, I am looking forward to any new Dwarf because the DVDs have made me nostalgic.I highly recommend that people read the first two books (and then weep for the lack of a proper Grant Naylor-written conclusion to what should have been a trilogy). They are better than the TV show. The characters have far more depth. They take scenarios from the TV episodes, but weave them together so expertly that, if I didn't know better, I would swear that the TV show was adapted from the books. The first book would make a superb basis for a movie. Can you imagine Bedford Falls being reconstructed in perfect detail for a Red Dwarf film?

episodes. Seasons 7 & 8 weren't as good for various reasons, but that was in the past and this is now. Red Dwarf was NEVER finished, it's return was always on the cards, it was just a matter of time and whether the movie ever got greenlit (which it was SO CLOSE to being). For me it's the best news ever. The fact that it's ten years on doesn't matter at all. Red Dwarf was never about them being specifically young characters. In fact, Lister was originally envisaged as someone in his 40s, which Craig Charles now is!

I don't know anymore. Yeah, i'd like to see more, but only just to say goodbye with style. A new series probably wouldn't capture another new generation of fans like Doctor who did, and the actors in the series are too central to the roles for a remake. The horrible "cliffhanger" ending style to series 8 will take a bit of creative writing, but a dignified farewell, i think, is the best fans can hope for.

    Series 8 > Series 7 > Series 6

    by smellmycheese

Seriously, I can't believe people actually enjoyed series 6. It was absolutely dreadful. Re-cycled gags, re-cycled plots, placing the crew solely on Starbug and giving them a mission was a good idea but the majority of the episodes fell flat. Predictable, unfunny and tiresome. Even the best episode "Horsemen" was shit - I have no idea why so many love it! Series 7 had it's flaws but some standout episodes too. Tikka to Ride was actually very funny. Rimmer's ascension to Ace Rimmer was poignant and a series highlight (if a little speedy) and Ouroboros was a neat little time-travel sci-fi story. Yes, Kryton's whining was a bad idea but I had no real objections to Kochanski joining (not a great character but she added a fresh new dynamic just as when Kryton joined full time). It also concluded with the return of male Holly and RD in a very well conceived story. Of the 8 episodes in Series 8 there's only 2 I can't bear to watch - the "finale" and that dreadful "Pete pt 2" - "Pete pt 1" was actually very funny, Krytie TV was also very funny and the 3-part opener too, with some nice nods and winks to previous episodes. There should, of course, have been two Kochanskis above RD but we can excuse that. The prison set up was reminiscent of Series 1 and 2, the gags were good and the other Canaries brought some fresh new humour. Of all the series I think series 6 was the weakest - I would say that Rob Grant and Chris Barrie would agree since they left after it. If these 4 episodes go ahead then they should CONCLUDE the story. Not set up a movie that will never get made, not set up a prequel/sequel series... it should just conclude this one! By the sounds of it I'm expecting 3 typical RD episodes, the last being special, different, and a conclusion with the fourth being a back-slapping, interview-driven, behind-the-scenes celebration of how great and wonderful RD used to be. The show gets a fitting finale and everybody is happy. The end.

I like Red Dwarf but I don't like the BBCs insistant dregging up of old comedies because they have't had anything good since The Office. Which also starred VIncent Price. God bless Kenny Everett. Tv comedy hsnt been the same since he died. He and Freddie Mecury had a feud, which killed them both. I saw a cartoon of Captain Kremin. In Dublin in the 1980s. On the Silver Screen. very very funny.

I would love him to do more stuff..but I am not sure really that the industry would want him back. What he and Armando Iannuchi did in satirising the British News is now all around us in IReland and the UK. people expected him to do something scathing about 9/11 and he wrote an article about that and it didnt go down very well. Armando Iannuchis columns for the observer were the reasons why one bought that newspaper. He has since left and his going into the film business. I have heard rumours that an alan patridge film is on the cards. There are lots of things that chris morris could do. Novelist, actor, film director, play wright. He has done tv. and as long as Grade is in Charge of ITV. He wont be making anything there.

You dont need to watch tropic thunder to see all about desperate celebs. Buy Brass eye on Dvd and watch how Morris fooled a whole load of celebs into to talking utter bollocks about serious subject matters. The Brass eye Drugs special and the baby elephant special are absolutley seminal moments in UK comedy. after seeing them you will forget about tropic thunder and its lame attempts satirise desperate actors. I didnt think much of tropic thunder. Fake trailers were hilarious. its just too bad that the movie stank. Very Funny in places. But in no way would I consider TT to be the funniest film of the year.
