Anthony Edwards: Clooney ‘Would Be A Fool’ Not To Return To ER!!
I am – Hercules!!
Departed cast members Anthony Edwards and Noah Wylie have been lured back for episodes of NBC's fast-approaching final season of “ER,” but producers apparently don’t want to stop there.
"I know they want to do everything they can to bring everybody back," Edwards tells TV Guide. "But who knows what'll happen?"
Will George Clooney, who left the show to pursue a big-deal movie career, turn up at County General one last time?
He "would be a fool not to," says Edwards.
Clooney apparently remains friendly with “ER” producers, who let him shoot a scene of his short-lived HBO series “Unscripted” on the medical drama’s set three years ago.
Find all of TV Guide’s story on the matter here.

Just asking.
-
Big mistake leaving E.R. Poor bastard committed career suicide.
-
Is E.R still on?! What is like now, watchable or not?
-
I had no idea. And didn't Anthony Edwards' character die of a brain tumour, or something of the sort? Unless there's some sort of cliched flashback (where the character mysteriously looks nearly a decade older) or "dream sequence," I don't see how they plan to pull this one off.
-
It's ending? Didn't it end already?
-
Ahoy, dream sequences! Hello, cruddy flashbacks!
-
I can tell you that the show is still watchable. Maura Tierney, Parminder Nagra, Linda Cardellini and Mekhi Phifer are consistently great, and believe it or not, the addition of John Stamos added a lot to the last few seasons.Granted, it's not the same show it was back when it started. There's been a lot of similar storylines and some bizarre cast departures in the past (i.e. Paul Crane's Dr. Romano character being crushed to death by a falling helicopter... one season after his arm was severed by a chopper's blade on the roof of County General), but overall, I've really enjoyed watching the show all these years. I do think it's time to end, but I'm glad they've had ample preparation for it. I'm looking forward to this season because I know some thought has gone into the conclusion (well, at least, I hope). As far as Dr. Mark Green (played by Anthony Edwards from 199-2002), yes, he did die of a brain tumor in the show. Here's what has been revealed about his return to the show this season:"Anthony Edwards will reprise the role of Greene, who died of a brain tumor at the end of the 2002 season, in flashback scenes in the Nov. 13 episode, NBC announced.
Dr. Greene will be shown with other characters from the show’s past and during an encounter with series newcomer Dr. Cate Banfield (Angela Bassett), an attending physician at County General, the network said." -
Unlike Clooney's?
-
I haven't kept up with ER for years now, but it seems to me like this is a departure for the series' format. I think they would be better off having an entire episode set in the past instead.
-
Plus, there was that James Woods episode that ran backwards, including the day of Greene's funeral (which was talked about but not shown).
-
He's done it before (I think it was on the last episode that Julianna Margulies was on), and if his persona is to be believed, he's not too big for his britches.

For any eason I expect just a cameo in the last few minutes
by derlanghaarige
of the final episode.
-
...will suck and has always sucked. Fuck hospital shows. Gimme a smoke monster over Anthony Edwards anyday.
-
...and the brain tumour was caused by JR! Dr Greene wakes up and discovers he's not dead, but has to fight for control of the Hospitals oil empire in a gripping saga of sex, drugs, rock n roll, booze, violence and death.
-
Television.
The man never deserved to be in movies. -
I find it funny how Clooney elected himself President/Spokesperson of Hollywood.
-
Maverick goes insane and spends his days talking to the RIO he helped kill in the first movie. Can't wait to see Anthony's hairpiece and the large truck they'll need to bring Val Kilmer into the scene.
-
And if he does, is he his House character or his ER character?
-
Clooney and Edwards roll over and go to bed.
-
But something tells me that rather large checks still end up in his mailbox from time to time...don't know why...
-
Back in your bubble, dude.
-
I fucking loved it for the first few seasons, but it began to get too soapy and repetitive after that, and lost the best characters without introducing good new ones. I fear House is heading in the same direction, it's getting so formulaic and having House not go through any character growth is getting annoying - he's going from a funny unlikeable prick to just a prick and I hope it's leading somewhere other than "he's still a prick."
-
Yeah, ER reruns, Top Gun money... he's doing OK for himself. Plus, shit even the lowest billed actors in a movie like Zodiac probably made six figures...
-
From the first season of ER is one of the best hours of drama ever on tv. Up there with "The body" on Buffy. The show really fizzled after Edwards left. But the first three-four season were terrific.
-
Thought this ended like 10 years ago. Seriously, people still watch this? I saw about 5 episodes when it first started and was like "meh".
-
The very end of Julianna Margulies' final E.R. episode was her reuniting with Clooney. It was a surprise cameo, years after he left, done tastefully, very little hype. And the episodes leading up to Dr. Green's death were perfection; his return, in flashbacks or not, sullies that. I was a loyal E.R. fan but finally bailed on it last season.
-
had a job since they left ER?
Clooney's been kinda busy since he did. -
Best chin on any Batman.
-
I just peeped that for the first time a couple months ago and wondered why the show didn't continue in that direction. Each hour dedicated to one fucked up case/situation, instead of piles of predictable and repetitive soap opera bullshit.
-
unless Dr. Greene is doing a one man show. I don't think any of the current cast could be in flashbacks with him.
-
...was actually just one season after he left, if I remember correctly. Kind of anti-climactic and uninspired, if you ask me.
-
Clooney would be a fool not to waste his time doing a stint on a show that has been on long enough for him to have left it and become one of the biggest stars in the world. I'm not coming back to do a 20 minutes side-story in the final season would be a serious mistake for his career. Joke. I love Goose as much as anybody else, but a get a grip buddy. And nice work in Zodiac. Proud of you.
-
in so many ways. I do miss that show. Were it not for Patinkin's ADD that prevents him from keeping a job longer than 6 months, it probably would still be on the air today.
-
how many of you would leap at the chance to attend your high school reunion. You're 30 pounds fatter, probably bald - your kids are in and out of trouble, and your wife isn't a supermodel. Oh and your job as a siding installer? Not exactly the same clout as fullback for the varsity football team.
Yeah - it boils down to whether or not Clooney wants to go back - and they say you can never go home again. It would be nice, but I wouldn't fault him for not doing it either. -

You stupid fuck
-
Man this show hasn't been funny since Anthony Edwards left....wait....that's SNL.....Nevermind.
-
Clooney is bigger than the show, has been for a long time. He owes ER nothing and hopefully Clooney is above a ratings stunt. Fuck ER, it should have been cancelled years ago.
-
and I think it would be a show of class to turn up, even as a cameo, on the series that made him a household name for its final season/episode. Before this his last network role was, what?, Sela Ward's boyfriend on Sisters?
-
...Leonardo DiCaprio didn't show up for the Growing Pains reunion movie.
-
...George Clooney didn't show up for the FACTS OF LIFE reunion movie.
-
And George should return. As should all of the major cast.
-
...not to do any SciFi original that comes his way.
-
Anthony Edwards has made eleventy billion dollars through contracts and syndication of ER. So really, what's more believable: He can't find other work, or prefers to sit on a beach gut-laughing all day?
-
would jump at the chance to do Gotcha 2. that pasty motherfucker hasn't even seen a beach.
-
Way better than Grey or House ever were or will be. I didn't liked Clooneys charakter so I don't give a fuck if he comes back. Carter, Benton and Greene are the guys the producers should spent their guest star budget. Romano would be great, but more than 1 flashback to a dead charcter would be too much.
-
Edwards earned so much money with E.R. that he could have money bathes with Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld.
-
I haven't watched ER in the past 2 years and depending on when the flashback takes place, Abby and Dr. Kovac are the only main current cast members that can be in the flashback. Also, I would like to see William H. Macy, Omar Epps, Maria Bello, and whoever played Lucy Knight to make an appearance. And I would definitely love to see Dr. Dave Malucci make an appearance as he was one of my favorite characters.
-
Anthony Edwards and Linda Fiorentino break out of the old folks' home to score some Cialis and Rogaine, and spend the rest of the movie looking for bathtubs that overlook eastern Europe.
-
And maybe Wormser and Louis?
-
But eventually stopped when every single original cast member departed. Clooney's run was by far the best but they had some good drama and stories in the years that followed his departure. Now the show is largely unrecognizeable and the cast mostly unlikeable. My brother and I actually sit and pull a MST3K when it comes on after that exceptional NBC Thursday night comedy block. Oddly enough, Law and Order just keeps pluggin' along and manages to retain most of it's quality even after almost two decades.
-
I'll try to keep this short but so many thought swirling through me head aarrgghh. I'm not sure what the average age is in here but it does seem under educated (sorry) but there is a prevailing desire for mean spirited quips for the quick laugh ( you must be a riot at parties). In regards to ones career being over, how do you define career/sucess? your face splashed on every tabloid rag or TMZ with your boob hanging out, driving the wrong way on a highway? If you starred in a very successful movie, let say Zodiac By a great director David Finch and I'm speaking to you in "here" personally would you consider your career dead? I certainly wouldn't. I also feel Edward's "he'd be a fool" comment was tongue in cheek considering Clooney's stardom. On to the topic at hand, "should he return"? More goes into that decision than you might think. What would run through your head if "you" had to make that decision? Where are you in your career? Maybe? Do you want people to forget that part of your filmography? In this case I doubt Clooney considers his ER day's an embarrassment, on the contrary they're critically acclaimed. So maybe it would be fun to revisit a "Piece" you created. Within the shows context it's not unheard of to revisit a previous place of employment, I do it often to visit old friends. Any way, I said I'd keep it short (I lied) but really some of you have Diarrhea of the keyboard and you type the first thing that drips out of your Arse. One last thing, there is some real comedy gems above. Not all of it is diarrhea. Horace Cox's "Big mistake leaving E.R. Poor bastard committed career suicide." regarding Clooney LMAO. That's it my train of thought derailed (lucky for you guy's) Be well.
-
Look I havent watched this show in years but fuck this strikes me as an insincere ratings grab. Bring back a dead charachter, really? And, Clooney needs to stay away for not himself but the integrity of the work he did do on this show. There are no circumstances under which Doug Ross as potrayed by Clooney would return to this place for a "very special episode". The guy lived on the edge breaking rules, making enemies, getting his medical liscense threatened and smoking weed on network television in the 90's. He made his little cameo for Julianna Margulies which made sense because she would be the only reason he would go back there. Like I said I havent watched it in a few years so Im not up on modern mythology and plot points, but to me the only person who is necessary to see again would be Wylie as he was the veiwers surrougate espescially that 1st season. I probably wont watch regardless, but I dont know if Doug Ross is sucessful, happy, practicing medicine or even alive but I like it that way. The world is a better place when guys are allowed to ride off into the sunset never to be seen again.
-
I stopped watching in something like 1999. I honestly didn't know it was still in production!!
-
Who could watch this anymore? Every week they advertise the next episode as somehing like, 'THE MOST SHOCKING ER EVER!!!' or some such nonsense. Ugh. Its just painfully bad TV. ER jumped the shark before Clooney left, and he was smart enough to smell the stink and ump ship.
-
...is in the ladie's room.
-
for the final season is a nice way to end a series. I haven't watched ER religiously since Anthony Edwards, Eriq La Salle and Juliana Margulies left. Noah Wylie left and came back too many times and I just thought it was stupid. Once most of the original cast members had gone the whole ambiance of the show changed, imo. As someone above has said, it became too soapy. The first few seasons had a better balance of their personal lives with their professional lives. I'll probably tune in for the final episode just to see how they wrap it up, but not because I think it's going to be spectacular.
-
ER is on about 900 times a day. It's probably being shown somewhere on planet Earth every second of every hour of every day. Anthony Edwards is rich.
-
Sure, he is kind of a douche, but the man is a huge star who puts in actually fairly decent performances in what he does. Assuming he has, like, 2 hours free in his schedule, maybe he'd show up, but I doubt it. Anyway, Clooney can do no wrong mostly in my book because he was in From Dusk till Dawn and that movie rules. Which I should probably watch again sometime.
-
I like to watch the old reruns on TNT but FUCK Eriq Lasalle's character is a douche bag! I was never a regular watcher but I rented most of the seasons when Clooney was still on. Now I could give a shit.
-
*This is about me, isn't it?*
-
Please stop worshiping this hack.
-
he sure doesn't need it. He's got millions of dollars and fucks hot chicks constantly and still gets lots of work...
-
No one from Clooney's days on the show is there anymore! What's he going to do, drop by to say hi and suddenly say "who the hell are you people?". The cast will thn look back at him and say "who is he again?"

Horace Cox - RE. "too bad it didn't work out for Clooney.."
by ceejaynightwing
..erm, what planet are you from? He only went on to star and direct major Hollywood movies, get three Oscar nominations and win an Oscar for best actor in 2006!
For those who are still stuck in the past, ER was never a show set in stone like the average narrow-minded viewer. It moved with the times and so did its characters. The show from Clooney's era moved on to better things and far more classic episodes than when he was romancing anything in a nurse's outfit. ER stopped being about writing about nice Doctors and Nurses and started writing about real people regardless of their natures or background. The scenarios and dramatic content expanded beyond the walls of the hospital to places like Africa and back! Anyone who hasn't watched since the original cast departed will have missed out on many returning cast members doing second or third stints like Doctor Susan Lewis and Doctor Jing-Mei Chen. They've missed classic episodes like when Carter and Lucy got stabbed, The Helicopter chopping off Romano's arm, the building collapsing during a party, Abbey saving the passengers from a bus on the edge of a cliff, Sam's Husbands jailbreak and shoot out in the ER, Carter and Kovac in Africa, The Hospital vs the stolen Army Tank, and many great others!
George would be a fool to miss out on a reunion, they should get as much people back in as many different capacities as possible be it guest starring, cameo or dream sequence. Most importantly it is Dr Carter who needs to return from Africa and take over the Hospital, ER started with Carter's journey and it should end with Carter's journey. By far and away one of the best and most consistently well written dramas ever to grace the screen for a mature audience. Moan and diss it all you want but the fact is it has 15 seasons of true quality productions and ambitious storytelling to hold up to the flash in the pan shows of today, and it lasted that long for a damn good reason - because it IS THAT GOOD! -
If Clooney made an appearance, wouldn't Margulies have to, too? What about Gloria Reuben? I hope they're not just asking the men (even the dead ones, apparently) to come back.
-
Yo dude or dudet, listen I believe Horace Cox is from the planet S.A.R.C.A.S.M with the moon F.A.C.E.C.I.O.U.S hmmm? ring a bell? I'm really holding back, I'm gonna let that slide. You could be tired and the rest of your post was nice so...that is all. Be Well.
-
That kind of says it all, doesn't it? As good as it was early on, ER is another one of those shows that became a fiscal endeavor rather than a creative one in the latter years. Not horrible, but still past the expiration date. X-files, NYPD Blue, ER...the list goes on.
-
To promote Barack Obama and universal health care!
-
Y'know, the guy who loses an arm to the purpellors, and then later gets crushed by one. Funniest moments in tv history.
-
only to be killed by a Killer Tomato and Roseanne.... funny how things work out eh ?
-
how would he be a "fool" not to return? He's a big name now, its not like he's going to fail all of a sudden if he doesn't come back to ER.
