Quint watches Zack and Miri Make A Porno!!!

Published at:  Sep 18, 2008 9:40:47 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with my thoughts on Kevin Smith’s newest ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO starring the adorable Seth Rogen (ha! Bet you thought I was going to say Elizabeth Banks!) and the very handsome Elizabeth Banks (ha! Bet you thought I was going to say Seth Rogen!) as BFFs who fall on hard times and decide pornography is the way out of their mountain of debt.

The buzz on this film was very strong coming off of Toronto, so I was psyched to see it. But I have to warn you… the movie takes about 10-15 minutes to find its voice. As much as I like Gerry Bednob (the “alligator fuckhouse” guy from 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN), he didn’t really seem to fit into this movie, playing Seth Rogen and Craig Robinson’s boss at a Starbucks-ish coffee house.

We really are hit up front with the Judd Apatow stock cast and I can’t really tell after one viewing if Smith was trying to replicate Apatow dialogue or if it was just the cast warming up for the feature. I’m leaning towards the warming up option because everybody is good in this scene outside of Bednob, who I think kind of dropped the ball on this one.

The flick really takes off when Zack and Miri head to their high school reunion and run into a very unlikely couple. Miri makes a fool out of herself hitting on the old high school football star, played by Brandon Routh… who is pretty much just playing himself… a Clark Kent-ish aw-shucks guy who wasn’t very nice to Miri in high school, but has grown up into a swell guy.

A guy who happens to also like swell guys as Zack finds out when chatting up Justin Long’s gay porn actor character, boyfriend of Superman. Suddenly we’re in a good Kevin Smith movie and it stays that way for the rest of the flick.

Imagine if Knocked Up, The Player, Orgazmo and Mallrats all came into the same Petri dish, got mixed together thoroughly and then artificially inseminated Chasing Amy and you have a good idea of what ZACK AND MIRI MAKES A PORNO is.

Seth Rogen is in top form, as funny as he’s ever been and not losing any of his shine yet. This script, in a way, was perfect for him because Rogen’s talent is being an everyman geek who is vulgar as hell, but has a huge heart.

Elizabeth Banks has a little bit of a tougher time here. She’s funny, she’s beautiful and she represents that kind of perfect love everybody has romanticized, even they don’t want to admit it. I’ve had it in my life, the Duckie situation. Hell, I’m kinda living it now, but the first time I fell head over heels for a girl she was one of my closest friend and I’ve seen how revealing those feelings can cause confusion and, in my case, altered my friendship for the worse.

But what’s tricky with Banks’ character is there comes a point where she has to keep your sympathy. You’ll know it when you see it, but if she didn’t fully bring it to this character the movie wouldn’t work because you’d stop giving a shit about her.

Jeff Anderson and Jason Mewes figure in as Zack and Miri decide to make this porno. Mewes is an actor with a special talent to get hard at the turn of a dime and Anderson is hired as a cameraman because he once taped the away games for their high school. It’s good to see both of them back and mixing the View Askew blood with the Apatow blood a bit, giving us something fresh from both camps. Although, I didn’t need to see Mewes’ dick. Very impressive, sir, but I would have taken your word for it.

The real MVP of the movie is Craig Robinson. Ever since he had that conversation with Katherine Heigl and Leslie Mann in KNOCKED UP (“I can’t let you in ‘cause you’re old as fuck… for this club… not for… for the Earth…”) I’ve been a fan of this guy, an appreciation which has only grown as I’ve watched him on THE OFFICE and in the Apatow flicks as he gained bigger and bigger roles.

In Zack and Miri he plays Zack’s co-worker who becomes the main producer of the porno and it is Robinson’s biggest role yet. In fact, I’d dare to say he’s almost ready for his title shot. I wonder when he’ll topline an Apatow movie? It’ll take the right project because right now his biggest talent is in his matter-of-fact delivery, kind of tailor made for the straight man or supporting character.

He is funny as hell in this movie and helps make it one of Kevin Smith’s career best. It has the heart, it has the raw talent of some of the best comedians working today and it takes the comedy and the world seriously. I love the cartoony slapstick comedy stuff Smith puts out just as much as the next View Askewniverse fanboy, but when you get a movie with some true heart and well-realized characters along with your tit and shit jokes everybody leaves happy.

Bang! First review of Fantastic Fest out! I had the chance to speak with Kevin Smith earlier today and will post that interview when I can. Tons more Fantastic Fest coverage coming up!

    by drturing

Ok seriously, casting Gerry Bednob? Next week, Kevin Smith changes his name to Shlomo Apatow and starts writing a tv show called Nerds and Turds. And then he does a movie about a guy in his 40s who never got laid called "Im a fan of Kevin Smith". And then he does a movie about getting a one night stand pregnant called "Up the shitter, no babies". And then a movie about weed smokers with action called "Sour Vin Diesel". Fuck Kevin Smith, he's such a fucking hack he even steals an entire cast. I bet next year he gets a pseudo British accent and tries directing Dazzler into some kind of dark movie after he casts Jared Leto as the psycho villain.

    by quint

Hehe... I will start by saying I didn't hate Jersey Girl, but Zack and Miri is not Jersey Girl. It's closer to Chasing Amy than anything else he's done. If there's a middle ground between Chasing Amy and Mallrats, this is it.Drturing - It doesn't work, but I think it's a bit unfair to just call Smith a thief. In my interview with him he talked a lot about how a lot of roles were written for his regulars and many of them couldn't do it, prompting Rogen to suggest some of his friends. I don't know if that was the case with Bednob, but there's a little more to it than Smith just stealing all of Apatow's crew for a flick. In fact, if he had filled it with his regulars I don't think it would have worked so well. It feels fresh because it's not his usual usual if you know what I mean.

I'm a recovering Kevin Smith fan...

    by spacker dave

I used to watch ViewAskew flicks all the time. I even supported him when he made Jersey Girl (hell, I bought it on dvd too to try and encourage him on his endeavor into more serious films) but after his pathetic attempts to go back to the well with the abysmal Clerks 2 I haven't watched a ViewAskew movie for a couple of years now. This fucking guy has nothing new to offer. Even this flick is one he scraped out of his decade old writing drawer. The "kids make a porno" idea is actually a movie he wanted to do after Mallrats and now over 12 years later he dusts off this tired old concept, tarts it up with the popular Apatow crew and parades it around like it's fresh. Gimme a break. Smith peaked a decade ago and I think he knows it.

I'm shocked you think that Spacker, i found Clerks II to be one of Smiths best pictures. The only Smith film i don't like are Mallrats and J&SBSB.

I worry that the general public might be getting a little too much of Apatow's crew. Overexposure could kill the most talented of comedians.

Clerks II is pandering, self-serving and most of all dishonest.

    by spacker dave

It tries to be all-out edgy and hip but never once captures the freshness of the original. Clerks is an ultra low budget triumph that had something new to say at that time in the world. Clerks II is a cash-grab for that once a lifetime spark of brilliance. It is lowest common denominator film making. And most of all it was unrequited. While I know we were promised a Clerks sequel I don't think anyone was pinning for one 12 years later. The time had past. That said I really hope this new movie is a return to form but I am severely skeptical.

    Jersey Girl

    by enderandrew

Jersey Girl isn't bad at all as a film. If you ignore all the J-Lo hype, it is a reasonably funny and reasonably touchy movie. It really only has one truly bad moment, when Ben Affleck gets out of his car, looks up to the sky and says something like "you couldn't make this easy on me" with a very ham-fisted delivery. It was nice to see George Carlin get an actual acting role, and Liv Tyler talking about masturbation was pretty funny. Kevin Smith's one arguably bad movie is J&SBSB which is one giant in-joke. The bits of actors making fun of themselves, and the entire movie is great, except the primary plot with lesbian bankrobbers, one of which mysteriously falls for Jay is pretty fucking awful.

That being said, I doubt a single hater on this board is capable of writing a script one tenth as good as Chasing Amy.

Caught the premiere of this in Toronto. What a hilarious fucking movie. The only problem I had was it seemed the Apatow brand was having a bit too much influence on Smith. J&SBSB was so-so, more props to Will Ferrell pre-superstar mode than anything, and Clerks 2... I just couldn't get over the overlong cuts to songs and scenes that felt like shitty fan made music videos. With all that said, he is at least writing his own shit and making movies, although I really wish he'd try and branch out to new genres and "mature as a film-maker".And, I loved Clerks when I first saw it, when I was twelve years old, that and Pulp Fiction, and I still like them to this day.

    by foreverguardian

Clerks 2 was great. it DID have all the hallmarks of the first, but the characters (and the filmmakers) had matured and evolved. That film is up there as pretty much my favourite Kevin Smith project. It has humour (both of the genuinely funny variety and the gross-out variety), heart, and is remarkably affectionate towards its subject matter as well as the audience it was aimed at. I absolutely love that film, and am looking forward to Zack and Miri as it sounds fun. Hell, if directors followed the instructions of talkbackers, we'd never get a decent film in the first place.

    by malificus

He should make his hay by smoothing out clunky dialogue in mediocre scripts. His direction still needs work, did he study anywhere? He sems like someone with a lot of natural ability but who's learned a lot of bad habits that are contrary to fundamentals. I've given Smith my fair share of swipes, but I don't wish the guy any ill. Good luck with the new flick, personally I'd really like to see him deliver a flick that would just slam dunk it. Is this film it? Probably not. He'll deliver it late in his fifties and die of a heart attack before it premieres and get rooked out of gloating.

    by laserhead

It's simply immature for a man to judge a woman because she got double-teamed by a pair of scumbags, among various other things, and the way to fix it and find true love is to invite a threesome with your girlfriend and best friend. Yes, seeing your buddy fuck your girl will cure you of your values (whoops-- I mean 'insecurities'). That threesome is such a ridiculous suggestion and so out of character. Plus, gentlemen, it's quite alright to deny your love to a girl because historically she's proven to be an indiscriminate cum-dumpster.

How explicit does it get, but more importantly:

The teaser for this crap was fucking horrid. It was some of the most unfunny horse shit I've ever sat through. Seth Rogen is obscenely overused. This guy needs to take a 5 year hiatus. I was sick of his fucking face 2 years ago and its right about time to fuck off.

    by zappaman

says "dick". Oh, wait...that's EVERY character EVERY 20 seconds. Not to mention, this movie is waaaay too long. It takes 45 minutes to even get to the idea of making a porno. Oh, and the dancing around montage while in STAR WARS gear? Embarassing. I laughed 3 times thanks to Justin Long. Nice try Kevin. You know you suck so now you try to ape Apatow? Sooo original.

Kevin Smith should KEEP making movies...

    by kid z

... and STOP writing comics. I have a recurring nightmare that I pick up a Fantastic Four written by KS and he's revamping (okay... cribbing) the Galactus Trilogy. But, in the penultimate scene, instead of Galactus showing up as the villain it's f**kin' Mysterio again!

    by fartedinthefaceofhollywood

hes just a hit or miss kinda guy, like ALOT of writer / directors out there. i DO see how split people are with him though...you either like his movies and find them funny....or you DONT....period. Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Clerks 1, and Jay and Silent Bob are my favs, Clerks 2 has its moments (loved the Star Wars fan VS. LOTR fan battle of words) but it gets old...and i didn't even bother seeing Jersey Girl...that film looks about as fun as being dragged through a pig-pen with broken glass in it...just looks boring and unfunny.

    Chasing Amy...

    by obsd

I admit that I loved that movie when it came out, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized how disjointed of a film it really was. It was actually 2 seperate films. First, it was a film about a guy winning over a lesbian and how that affects her life. But Smith decides to steer the movie away from that story and goes directly into a second story that has almost nothing to do with what came before it. This new story is about a guy that can't handle his girlfriend's previous sexual exploits. They never go back to the lesbian thing at all. The ywo halves are so different, they would almost work better as two short films than as one long film with two storylines.

If even 90% of Smith's work is shit..

    by malificus

..that's 90% more shit than you pricks who instantly jump on the guy have ever produced. Give the fucking guy credit for at least producing, I give comic creators living HELL because I've done my own book, so thereby I walk the walk. The only reason you're all so quick to jump in his shit is because he comes off as a fairly decent guy who wouldn't kick your fucking asses for mouthing off like you do, even though I would. Don't say anything here you wouldn't say to someone's face if you had the chance and most of you Smith bashers would belly up to his table and get geek-faced to have lunch with him and Mewes and you know it. I find most of his work mediocre but I'm not gonna sit here and bash something I haven't actually seen, nor attack him personally when I've never met the man.

Until then-- shut the fuck up and quit whining. I love this, "Say what you would say to someone's face," argument. I got news for you. This isn't the same as saying it to someone's face. Its the fucking internet-- cocksucker. I don't have to be polite. And can sit here and tell you to fuck off and swallow my urine and get a chuckle out of it, knowing it upsets you. I myself never once attacked Kevin Smith personally. Personally he seems like an awesome guy. His films suck fucking asshole and I will attack him on his lack of talent accordingly. P.S. Fuck off.

You don't get it. The subject of the fight doesn't matter. I've also had people suggest that her character is impossible, but I know women who've bounced back between women and men. Some people don't know what they want. Or they object the hint of a threesome saying that doesn't happen in real life. I have friends who are swingers. I've had threesomes myself. Lemme tell you, it does happen. But none of that matters.

The point of the movie is that you can be absolutely stupidly in love with someone, fuck it up, and spend the rest of your life in regret to an extent. You open a door, and you can't just fix it. Every single Hollywood rom-com is the same. Boy meets girl. They fight. In the end, they kiss and make up.

Chasing Amy is the only movie that says, sometimes real life isn't that simple.

Kevin has said in QA sessions that he was worried the story wasn't realistic, so he ran it past Gwen Turner (who wrote American Psycho, L Word, Go Fish, etc) and she signed off on it. As a lesbian, she may have suggested scenes from personal experience. She has a cameo in Chasing Amy, as well as Dogma. And it is a shame she's gay, because she is really hot and a very good writer.

Remember when the nation laughed at DannyGlovers_DickBlood?

    by mcsuchandsuch

When Apatow ripped into him in such a subtle way at San Diego and Conan? Where Conan's audience roared with laughter at the fact that someone would come up with that name, and use such wit as "fart on American cinema"? Everyone laughed at how there can be such a loser. Some people on here might think it's cool and evidence that you're "famous". Most realize it's sad, and shows that that will probably be your most public contribution. Think about that, when you die, that is what in your heart of hearts you know you will be known for. Judd Apatow and Kevin Smith continue to get paid millions to hang out with their friends. You're breaking your back and knee-deep in debt, I would assume. Way to show them.

I remember one night my roommate came home after seeing "Chasing Amy" and she said that as a woman she felt "trapped" watching that film. She just didn't feel good and kept going on about it. All I could say was "Snootchie snootchie Susan Lucci!"...but this brought no comfort to her.

Wait! I remember him! He made one good movie years ago...and this morning he asked for a few bucks to wash my windshield as I waited at a red light.

I was going to give him a twenty out of sympathy but then I remembered I paid cash money to see JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK so I smacked him with the car door and ran him over when the light turned green.

It's okay. I put him out of his misery. Let's remember the good times and forget he hasn't had an original idea since the 90s.
