ScoreKeeper Wants To Tell You About A Cool Interview With 007 Composer David Arnold!!

Published at:  Sep 18, 2008 12:48:25 PM CDT

Greetings! ScoreKeeper here exiting my Aston Martin DB5 to bring you news of an exclusive interview courtesy of Tommy Pearson over at StateAndScreenOnline.com.

With all the talk of QUANTUM OF SOLACE (2008) in the air it was only a matter of time before the film music world rev up its discussion of the next highly anticipated addition to the Bond score collection.

Taking the reins once again is David Arnold who penned scores for TOMORROW NEVER DIES (1997), THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (1999), DIE ANOTHER DAY (2002), and CASINO ROYALE (2006). Tommy was fortunate enough to snag Mr. Arnold in between scoring sessions for the latest Bond film for a little one-on-one chat.

The interview is free to download and it’s quite worthy…whether you are or not.

Hi SK,

The new theme song sucks untold amounts of donkey dick. It is the singularly worst Bond song of all time. It seems every artist wants to perform a Bond song and somehow every two years the producers pick the worst possible song they can find. Unbefuckinglievable.

    I agree, sadly

    by jadstersdad

It's a massive disappointment. No, Arnold had no involvement. Unfortunately. He's apparently said he thinks it's 'great', but he would have to say that..wouldn't he? Any effort by him would be 100 times better. Puzzled why AICN hasn't featured more on this so far, as it's big news. At least over here in the UK.

    Not bad, methinks

    by epitone

It's a decent song and the great Daniel Kleinman animations will make it a lot better.

    First Of All, Epitone

You may need to get your hearing checked. Secondly, Daniel Kleinman (who is great, you're right) is unfortunately not doing the titles or gunbarrel for this film. Hate to tell you, but it will be this piece of shit song with Forster's usual graphics company.

OK, that's a bummer about no Kleinman, but I'm still optimistic because the graphics in Stranger Than Fiction were really well done. Hopefully we'll get him back for the next one if someone else directs it. And I still think the song is fine. Just okay, yes, but so was the last one.

Didn't this also happen on Tomorrow Never Dies, on that film Arnold even wrote a theme song himself and got kd lang to record it, but the studio went with the not-that-bad Sheryl Crow song. Arnold's version was much more Bond-y, but probably less likely to get radio play as a single which unfortunately is what the money men will look at...

Then again, I liked "You Know My Name" as well, so it is evident that I have terrible taste.

Got to agree, seriously terrible song for a terrible movie..

    by wowsah156

Think about it. A movie series that glamorises illegal death squads and asassinations. and attempts to make it "cool" for kids. So i am thinking that Black realisres this and has made a shit song to go with a shit movie that sholudnt be bougt into. When is the next bourne movie out already?!

How Arnold managed to survive the reboot???

    by samson_k

He's a bland and boring composer for Bond - I like some of his other scores fine but his Bond scores are so fucking interchangeable.Barry gave each and every Bond film that he scored - even the awful ones a rich and individual thematic sound - Arnold just scores each one exactly the same way.Haven't heard the new song yet - can't be as bad as Madonna's?

    no subject

    by mikethespike

Oh man. No Kleinman, no Arnold, no Don Black and an awful, sleep-inducing song to boot. These are going to be some pretty shitty opening credits. At the very least, it's not Die Another Day bad. Still...

Why does Arnold get dicked around with like this? His objectively superior k.d. lang song gets shoved to the credits, the catchy theme he'd made for DAD only shows up in snippets in the score, and he gets saddled with Chris Cornell in the last one. If they like him enough to bring him back for the reboot, why not let him do his thing?

    Rebeck,

    by mikethespike

Wait, wait, let's get one thing straight: nothing could be worse than the Madonna song. "Sigmund Freud, analyze this?"

It's particularly disappointing, as I'd read White was a fan of OHMSS' theme. I'd gotten my hopes up over that! Gah. Hopefully Arnold isn't compelled to incorporate this song into the score.

Oooh - it's not great is it?

    by samson_k

Just tracked it down and - hmmmmm
Nowhere near as bad as Die Another Day - sorry Rebeck, but - hmmmmmmIt 'might' be a grower - I'm not sure but after three listens it's very dodgy.Conversely I used to look forward to the Bond songs if not the films - how fickle the finger of fate can be!!!

    Mike...

    by rebeck2

I agree the DAD lyrics are crap, they make absolutely no sense. She might as well had just blurted out random phrases..."Kitchen sink! Belgian Waffle! Parking ticket!" But at least the song had a kind of propulsive and catchy beat to it. This song is just a mess. It keeps starting and stopping and never even feels like a full song. In any case, we agree...the fuckin' thing is bad. And I wish they would OHMSS it over the titles as just an instrumental (like the Coke ad) because that would be okay - the vocals are really what make it so bad.

    Samson, To Each His Own...

    by rebeck2

But to me, this song actually manages to make DAD and YKMN look like semi-masterpieces in comparison. How can the producers be so clueless? It boggles the mind. Is it really that hard? My bet is the Winehouse song kicks ass. Duffy's Mercy is more Bondian than this shit.

    by prossor
