The Creators of THE WIRE and OZ Team For Proposed HBO Mini MANHUNT, About The Search For Assassin John Wilkes Booth!!

Published at:  Sep 15, 2008 10:22:07 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Tom Fontana, who helped “Wire” creator David Simon adapt his book "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets" into NBC’s 1993 cop drama, is reteaming with Simon for a proposed HBO miniseries based on James L. Swanson's book “Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer.”

Simon, who oversaw the HBO miniseries “The Corner” and “Generation Kill,” is also at work on “Treme,” an HBO series about post-Katrina New Orleans.

Fontana is no stranger to HBO either, having created its prison drama “Oz.”

Secondly, the Wire is the single greatest achievement in American narrative storytelling since the post war novelist period.

    by giphangster

The book was awesome. As I was reading it, I couldn't help but think it would be perfect for a film or television adaptation. I'm shocked and really glad to see this is being made, especially with this kind of talent behind it.

Ah! I'm seriously geeking out right now.

    by futureman2681

I have no idea why I never watched this series before. I am on season 3 now and I have to say it is one of the most amazing things I have watched. It transcends the medium and works more like a visual novel. I am very excited to hear that the creators are going to have more televised crack for me to get hooked on.

The Wire is unmatched. Generation Kill was all you could wish for from a book adaptation. Treme looks to be quality and now this.

What's your objection to the book? Or is that just a fantasy criticsm? I thought it was great and I will be happy to see this replace that shitty John Wilkes Booth TV movie with Rob Morrow. I kind of liked Lance Henriksen as Lincoln, though.

    by docmanhattan

The book was an extremely entertaining piece of work, and I always thought it would be perfect for a miniseries. No, it's not 100% accurate, but there is no way of being accurate about everything when it comes to that time period. It's historical fiction people, get over it.

At least for miniseries. HBO's returning shows from the last years are indeed not nearly as good as the stuff on F/X, Showtime and AMC.

    Crosetti Would LOVE This

    by samuellappdance

Anyone remember the late, great "Homicide: Life on the Street?!" Simon and Fontana were two of the guiding forces on that classic cop show from the '90s. Early on, there was a homicide detective Steve Crosetti, who was obsessed with the notion that Lincoln was not killed by Booth but the victim of a larger conspiracy. I had to chuckle when reading that years later, two of the men who breathed life into that great character and his obsession are now actually tackling the real story.

Aside from the escort missions, like the one with the bum... But still a kickass game. I have yet to play Manhunt 2, but did recently get it off of Amazon for a mere $4. It's got to be worth at least that $4 of my time.

1 day per episode makes sense. This will work much better as a mini-series than movie. I wonder if they'll be allowed to film in Fords Theater and Dr. Mudds house?

Hell yes, I watch this. The series could be a really dramatic look at events surrounding Lincoln in his final days, as well as kickass as a post-Civil War manhunt story.
    Sounds good to me.

  • But I don't see it listed on IMDB anymore for him. I guess something happened and they nixed it. It was going to have the same title too.
