EAGLE EYE Director D.J. Caruso Wants A LaBeouf-Led Y: THE LAST MAN To Be His Next Movie!!

I am – Hercules!!
Filmmaker D.J. Caruso tells SciFiWire he’s turned in a screenplay for “Y The Last Man” and, pending Warner Bros.’ approval, hopes the big-screen adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s comic-book series will be shooting by early next year. Caruso, who directed Shia LaBeouf in “Disturbia” and “Eagle Eye,” says LaBeouf is his first choice to play Yorick, the last male human on a planet of women, and that he expects the actor should be available for the role. As to who will play the female lead, there’s this:
Q. Alicia Keys is a name that comes up for 355. Caruso: Yeah, you know, that ... came up a lot in the last couple of weeks, and it's very interesting. I mean, I have not met her, but I mean she might be an interesting 355. I thought she did a cool job in the Joe Carnahan movie [Smokin' Aces].
Find all of SciFiWire’s story on the matter here.

    Bring on the Shia haters...

    by mr.brownstone

even though he was born to play this role. Anybody who denies it is just being an asshole. And please don't even bother suggesting that doofus from Brick, Jonathan Taylor Thomas or whatever his name is, who seems to be the latest fanboy suggestion for everything... he has the screen presence of a potted plant.

    Nope don't see it

    by Xiphos_2

I don't drink the Shia haterade like some around here, Shia doesn't register with me at all, but for this project he's as wrong as wrong can be.<p> One of those skinny emo actors from Great Britian would be much better for the Yorrick role then Shia.

    by Spifftacular Squirrel Girl

I'm awfully sure that BKV has mentioned in an interview that he'd always pictured Topher as Yorrick but you can't really fault Caruso for wanting his guy in the role. <p> Anyone else feel like they will probably try to shoot for a PG-13 rating with this? It'll be a lot fewer F-Bombs than in the comics.

Please don't let Shia play "that awkward guy" again! Yorick needs to ACT, not just muddle his way through his lines. Oh, God, I hope directors and producers read this site and take into consideration what fans say.

    by ev1ldead

I haven't read the comic yet and have nothing against Shia, but I don't wan't to see him in this. Besides HBO Series could tell the story way better than 1 or even 3 Films.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 5:42 a.m. CST

I've said it once, I'll say it again - Chris Evans should play Y

    by brokentusk

He's got the looks and the talent to match (for proof, rent SUNSHINE). More importantly though, his personality suits Yorick to a tee. At this point, Shia LaBeouf can only play Shia LaBeouf and fans of the book will have difficulty seeing him in the role. I actually have no problem with Shia generally, but I really don't think he should get this part... it's just too lazy.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 6:12 a.m. CST

Just don't force the entire story into a 2hr movie

    by newc0253

this needs to be at least 2 films, if not a full-blown trilogy. the story deserves no less. re casting, Keys seems like a good choice for 355 (if a little young) and Shia, while bland, will probably do okay.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 6:13 a.m. CST

Anyone read Leboufs interview in DETAILS Magazine?

    by IndustryKiller!

It's funny, the interview almost had me feeling bad for him and some of the negative buzz he's gotten until the clutch question of "What do you think is the cause?" and he comes up with the stock answer of "Jealousy". I mean I guess when you gotta make heads or tails of something like that, just for self preservation you pick the thing that makes you feel good, but it just seemed so outright delusional and undeservedly arrogant. As if it would never occur to him that maybe, just maybe, people could actually get sick of a guy who has never really given a great performance or played anything outside of himself might get a little old when a filmmaking magnate SHOVES him down everybody's throat. I don't have a problem with the guy per se, but to me he's still a lightweight and I'm not sure anything he's doing in the future is going to change that. He's got a charisma sure, but it's not the kind of charisma you want thrown in your face. You can only take the quick talkin, dorky, self deprecating guy so much before enough is enough.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 6:18 a.m. CST

Lebouf is also totally non threatening

    by IndustryKiller!

And it's tough to like someone like that as a screen idol. It's odd that despite all of the dudes offscreen antics he doesn't seem to have one fucking ounce of edge, and what edge there is is more weasely and scheming than it is actual cool. throw all the biker jackets on him you want and level all the accusations of "hater" in the world, I still don't believe him throwing a punch or kissing a girl. I'm no hater, he was one of the only aspects of Indy 4 that I thought was defensible.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 6:19 a.m. CST

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up, IndustryKiller.

    by CreasyBear

But like you said, he's not going to embrace that. He's just gonna ride this wave like Colin Farrell did when he had his spate of movies thrown his way.

    Jason Dohring for Yorick

    by Charlie Murphy

or JGL, that would be great. Caruso has said he plans Y to be a trilogy if he makes it, so i'm not too worried about a rush job, i'm just worried it'll get fucked up and lose what was great about the book. like, i can see some hollywood types making Y into a love story about two people lost across the world after a tragedy and trying to find each other again. which i guess is what Y is on the surface but it's about way way more than that.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 10:57 a.m. CST

I respectfully disagree with these casting ideas

    by Theta

LaBeouf just doesn't have the chops or ability to sell hyperactive pop culture referencing to be Yorick; he'd come off as whiny. Keys just wouldn't work as 355.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 10:58 a.m. CST

Shia actually makes a good Yorick.

    by the Grobe

He's a dorky, funny, wimpy guy who always looks out of his element. This is one of the few times I'm behind his casting (I wish he wasn't in the Crystal Skull, but that whole movie was a string of bad decisions). I second Gina Torres as 355. Rated R or don't bother making the movie. And actually, the screenplay has the opportunity to be BETTER than the comics which fell apart in the last couple of trades- too cliche and predictable, even the "twists".

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 11:05 a.m. CST

    Will never work

    by Mr. N

Women will find the movie version offensive. Shia is an offensive talent (or lack thereof) and men won't go see an action film dominated by women (unless it's an awesome R, which it won't be). Shia doesn't have the grit to pull off the final issue, or the climax of Yorick. These are sad times we're living in my friends.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 12:03 p.m. CST

    This movie will fail . . .

    by follyway

Shia actually doesnt bother me too much for Yorick as he is supposed to be umimpressive but there is no way this will work on screen. One film is far to little get the arc of Yorick or 355. And, lets face it there is no way to sell this thing in its true version. You make an honest version with insane self mutilating lesbians, women fighting over the chance to fuck a random man and women killing women just because their are no men left. Are you kidding me? It would have to be a hard R with violence and nudity. You would have women's groups up in arms talking about the misogynistic fantasies of Hollywood. You would have the Jewish anti-defamantion league complaining. Shia's 13yr old girls would be confused. Grown men would be pissed that this wanker represents them. All you'd be left with is 15yr old boys. No fucking way they make that movie. It will be a severly comprimised PG-13 pseudo action flick with little to no insight into the struggle for power and our darwinian instincts. Sorry, the casting of Shia is the least of this films problems.

    by TallBoy66

Works fine for me. Yorrick doesn't evolve as a character, really, until, like, issue 20ish when that S&M chick beats the crap out of him. I'm just more concerned they tossed a BKV script when the fucking guy, you know, wrote every single issue. I think I read he compressed the whole series into one script that that seems like...alot.

    by drewlicious

Seriously if the character is under 30 that's the name I see suggested every time I visit this site. I think he does really good work too but just because he's a good actor doesn't mean he could play anything. It's kind of like that Tetsuo rumor he shot down. I think he's a good actor but would he have been right for the part? I would have gone with Elijah Wood because he just looks so helpless and that's how I see Tetsuo.

Sometimes the best actor is not necessarily the best choice. Casting is a bigger factor than what most people think. It's like people suggested Jake Gyllenhal as Tobey Maguire's replacement for Spider-Man. Sure, he's a very talented actor but a very poor fit. I would have suggested Topher Grace (forgetting part 3) because it's simply a better fit even if he is less talented.

Yes to the movie, No to Shia

    by Pop_aristocrat

...and I don't hate Shia, just something about his particular delivery seems really wrong for Yorick.... and, honestly, I'd like it if Hollywood had more than one 19-21 year old leading man. We've got Shia, the kids from Superbad, and JGL in every damn movie now. Only one of those guys can act, and he's already signed on to GIJoe.

happy to see that im not the only

    by bacci40

person that couldnt get into y...btw, i dont get ennis' the boys either...seems that the comic is just really an excuse for over the top sex and violence with no purpose...ennis may be proud that it out preacher's preacher...but at least preacher had a point and made great commentary on politics, religion and popular culture...the boys does not

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 5:21 p.m. CST

Yeah. Cast Alicia Keys, cause she doesn't suck or anything.

    by WhinyNegativeBitch

Other than sucking at music and acting, and being an ugly cow shes a great choice.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 5:22 p.m. CST

    Levitt gets recommended

    by WhinyNegativeBitch

Because hes the best actor of his age group. But Shia LeCusack is still the best choice for this role. Wether you fags want to admit that or not.

    Gosling is better than Levitt....

    by TheWaqman

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 5:29 p.m. CST

    by WhinyNegativeBitch

Dude, on the eyesight call, thats kind of funny. Rent The Lookout. He looks IDENTICAL to Ledger in some scenes. I never would have noticed it before, but as hes gotten older hes started looking eerily similar, and in the lookout he looks exactly fucking alike. Get him a little fatter and older and yeah, he WOULD be the perfect replacement. I mean, except for his voice...mannerisms...etc etc. And Kurzinski...I would rather get butt fucked by Levitt than have to spend more than 5 minutes in a room with that annoying trollop.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 5:32 p.m. CST

    Gosling is good...

    by WhinyNegativeBitch

...But he hasn't had any roles that stand out as much as Levitts. I guess people were impressed by the mumbly junkie thing. And The Believer was a pretty strong standout role in a piece of shit film.

    Chris Evans - brokentusk

    by uVa

I don't know why I've never thought of him before. He would be awesome. He can act (Sunshine) has the right personality, and even has the right face. Number one choice I say!

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 6:14 p.m. CST

    by swordsmasteryen

Might as well have Bret Ratner direct . . . I don't know why they always put these beloved properties into the hands of these hacks. Shave' le Muff is a bad choice for lead, Yorick is obnoxious, but not that obnoxious.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 6:40 p.m. CST

Chris Evans is too good looking

    by drewlicious

I like him fine but you need somebody who doesn't look like an underwear model to play Yorrick. Now that I think of it, even though he's already done a comic book apdaptation, James MacAvoy would be good.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 7:33 p.m. CST

Lets face it the kid is a midget and a pussy.

    by GQtaste

And not at all a leading man type so thats why alot of folks get mad at the fact that this kid gets all these great roles.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 8:34 p.m. CST

    Like the McCavoy suggestion..

    by MrClark

And whatever idiot said Gosling hasn't had as many good roles as JGL needs to get his head examined. The knob slobbing over JGL is crazy here, the kids got talent but hes not the next Orson Welles or Daniel Day-Lewis reincarnate. I don't really mind Shia for the role tho so I'll probably see it anyway.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 8:49 p.m. CST

    Gosling would be fine

    by PumpyMcAss

Evans is too pretty and gay. MacAvoy would be good but he's too short and little. Leavitt would be fine as well. LaBeouf would be terrible.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 9:09 p.m. CST

    by Series7

Would be best for this. McCavoy/Shia/Levvitt are all pussies. Especially McCavoy, WE GET IT Ewan was on break for awhile Motorcycling around the world. He's back now, and can go back to starring in every movie with a title.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 9:11 p.m. CST

    by Series7

Seriously, he has a personal express account and he ending up getting a sweet gig as a temp for Ewan McGregor while he was off blowing money.

    by mr.brownstone

Joseph Gordon Levitt has stand out roles? He fades into the background in every scene while simultaneously inducing spontaneous narcolepsy. If he's the best actor of his generation that's truly depressing. He is so bland he makes Dracula era Keanu look like Taxi Driver era DeNiro. I hope he becomes an interesting actor one day, I really do, but as it stands his rep as a good actor seems like some kind of mass hypnotic delusion.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 9:44 p.m. CST

    by mr.brownstone

I agree that Alicia keys is useless as an actor. She seems like an incredibly unimaginative and knee jerk choice.

has anyone jsut had enough of this shia lebeouf thing? are we really ready to put him into a comic book movie? especially an awsome one.

  • Sept. 15, 2008, 11:32 p.m. CST

Ben Wishaw is the perfect choice.

    by chaplinatemyshoe

But he's a Brit and Spielberg's not in love with him...and why the hell is DJ Caruso doing this one? Why is it mostly shitty directors are interested in destroying comics?

    by TheWaqman

and you're riding Levitt's cock too. You call Gosling's role in Half Nelson "the mumbly junkie" yet you think Levitt's performances stand out more. Which one? The silent janitor role he got so highly praised for? Fact is Gosling has proved more up to this point. Levitt is talented, he just hasn't shown his full potential yet (and if he has, then he's not the next big star, Emile Hirsch is more talented too btw).

I would much prefer to see him in this. Oh well, people actually know who Shia is, so score one for him.

Joseph Gordon Levitt is a good idea!

    by Duty

SpawnofAchilles! you nailed this one! Levitt is making smart choices .... Levitt would make a GREAT Spiderman!

    I saw The Lookout whinynegative

    by IndustryKiller!

I actually saw it opening weekend, I'm a pretty big fan of Levitts. Especially since I think he's one of the few actors out there who always shines more in leading roles than supporting. He's a character actor who can do leads. With that said, he looks NOTHING like Ledger. Ledger was far more hunky, whereas Levitt is a much smaller guy. Their stature is just completely different as is the facial structure. I don't think they could even convincingly play brothers in a movie let alone the same guy. They also sound nothing alike, Ledgers voice is very deep and resonant, whereas Levitts has a more shrill tone. not like Justin Timberlake annoying as fuck shrill, good shrill. I think Levitt could be a great comic book villain, especially under the direction of someone like Nolan, but as the Joker I think it would be a huge mistake unless you wanted to go in a totally different direction, which would just be jarring and unwise.

  • Sept. 16, 2008, 3:06 a.m. CST

From what you guys are saying about Yorrick it sounds...

    by IndustryKiller!

like a really annoying character. A character that some people would get behind but would just be too much to take for others. i've never read the series, but if he's one of those loveable dorks always joking at inappropriate times in that oh so clever whedonesque way then you can count me right the fuck out because characters like that are a total farce. That would also be even more reason not to use Shia Lebeouf, who would only play up those aspects, and get someone like Levitt, who is much more naturally stoic and intellectual. Levitt would be playing the fop, but underneath would be that rich layer of gooey subtext, which you don't really get with Lebeouf.

  • Sept. 16, 2008, 4:29 a.m. CST

    Chris Evans.

    by WhinyNegativeBitch

Never thought much of him before, but he was very strong in the otherwise craptacular Street Kings. Sort of jumped on my radar. Still stand by JGL as the best around for his age group, but I, like most people, totally forgot about Perfume. That kid was fucking fantastic, and its a shame his film and performance were so overlooked. Emile Hirsch...I don't know. Fortunate enough to star in one good film. Gosling...Well, hes fucking talented yeah, but hes yet to get a role to match something like Mysterious Skin. I mean, his performance is totally wasted in Lars and indie movie of the week Junkie Teacher. Kind of waiting for someone to give him something great to work with. Industrykiller...Well, the character is the loveable geeky, lovelorn dork. I mean, physically he's not all that close, but thats why I think LeCusack is a perfect choice. I mean, I actually like Shia, and think he just hasn't really gotten roles that suit him, and I'd blame the negative reactions more on Spielberg and Co. trying to force a square peg in a round hole. By the way, theres no subtext for an actor to be concerned with. Its a pretty shitty book built on a not so great high concept log line. I mean, it could definately make for a diverting couple of hours on DVD, but unless there is some massively drastic rewrites, its gonna be a pretty generic summer popcorn flick.

  • Sept. 16, 2008, 4:33 a.m. CST

    Oh and...

    by WhinyNegativeBitch

...Have to agree to disagree on Levitt/Ledger/Lookout. I always thought Shia missed the boat by not doing a film version of Vernon God Little back in the day. Could have at least got one credible indie role under his belt. (some people may count that mean streets knock off I suppose).
