From the Director of JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO comes DOUBT trailer!
Hey folks, Harry here... Am I the only one that loves JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO? I remember at the time it seemed critics decided that it was the nerdy kid with a pocket protector on the school bus of cinema, but dammit... I've always liked geeks - and JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO was solid fun geek cinema. I loved the look and feel of the film, the wacky sense of being. Yet it also had a sadness. Then there was the greater glory of flourescent lights sucking Joe's soul. Brilliant. Accurate. True.
Anyway, the fella that directed that film was John Patrick Shanley - his only directorial effort was JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO - but his fingertips sculpted a series of pretty damn good films with movies like MOONSTRUCK, THE JANUARY MAN and ALIVE - along with the script for JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO. His last big scrip was CONGO - a film that the mere mention of makes me think of Taco Bell Watches, an Ape with a Nintendo Power Glove - and Volcano monkey death... which just gets me to giggling.
Well - it seems that John has decided to come out with something... COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the work he's done before.
DOUBT is a movie from Miramax... an awards-minded project it seems, that stars Meryl Streep as a Nun from Hell (it seems) and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Father Flynn - a priest that may or may not have abused a young struggling black member of the church. The trailer does a great job of creating a "who did what when and where" type of feeling, while also showing off Hoffman's awesome chops and the Bette Davis direction of Meryl Streep's career.

The Director of Joe Vs the Volcano should only be making trailers.
-
Second!
-
Hope the movie can replicate it.
-
Streep: (shouting) Hoffman: (shouting).... and so this looks promising?
-
...Joe Vs the Volcano rules!! I've always considered it one of the most underrated films of the 90s. Man, it's got Ossie Davis, Robert Stack, and Lloyd Bridges! Every scene they're in in is just sheer brilliance! Damn, now I have to watch the film right now. I usually don't agree with you Harry, but I big heart Joe Vs Volcano.
-
"Poetic" is an overused word, however it fits perfectly to this forgotten little gem.

When are we gonna get a AVATAR/Cameron Q&A, Harry?
by unionjackass.webs.com
BTW, DOUBT looks okay, I saw the trailer yesterday.
-
Joe Vs The Volcano is great.
-
Joe vs. The Volcano is great on every level. How can any movie go wrong with Dan Hedaya, Lloyd Bridges and Abe Vigoda in it?

Than song... damn, that whole sequence resumes so well that routinary feeling of the cubicle life...

Just a great pick me up film with a heart of gold.
-
Um...no. A bit late to this party if you wanna try to be this film's "lone" champion. And Doubt looks like great award bait, can't wait.
-
Then it kind of falls apart and paints itself into a corner - to mix my metaphors completely - but everything up to that point is brilliant. The ending may be the reason people don't realise what a great movie it is.

Harry are you aware this is based on a Pulitzer-winning play?
by nate champion
Awards minded project IT SEEMS?????? Maybe do a little reading and you'll know what the fuck you speak of.
-
wrote the play, by the way.
-
in my head.
-
Joe is a great movie; the luggage one of the best scenes ever.
-
...if he thinks he's the only one who loved that movie. It rocked! Yes, it was a silly affair, but come on, guys, Abe Vigoda, Lloyd Bridges, Meg Ryan, Dan Hedaya, and some awesome luggage? Classic movie.
-
that looks fucking awesome. man that looks goods.
-
sounds great already. and Amy Adams as a nun is going to be my fantasy tonight!
-
This was a play that won the Pulitzer AND the Tony. It's already won awards.
-
a) Harry called it "an awards-minded project". how does the movie being described that way negate any past awards in previous forms?b) how exactly would illiteracy cause whatever your blabbing about?c) think before you type.
-
I know it's a brain cloud. Not sure where the 'shadow' came from. Sorry.
-
you aren't the only one who loves that movie...... I love it soo much. especially the beginning. The music choices, the hidden hints, the art direction and of course Tom Hanks is the best. Well, does it take more guts to twice traverse a staircase in a burning building, or to make a one-time leap into a volcano?
-
Yes it was great one of my fave Rom/Coms! I have the hteme on my ipod so i have out geeked youall! hahahaha...seriously just wanted to say it was a cool movie
-
We're here to talk about DOUBT! Not some dumbass Volcanoe Movie that starred Tom Lee Jones years back or whatever! Get a life guys and talk about real films, not geek crap!! DOUBT not only has Phillip Seymour Hoffman in it and Meryl Streep - know who those actors are do you people? Or have you yet to grow up and mature? - but it also has the delicious and gorgeously talented Amy Adams in it too, which is my main reason for seeing it. I love the stuff that she's doing so far and turning her hand to playing so many different characters, I would love to see how well she plays in this and portrays that dilmena she's in not just one of uncertainty and faith, but of courage and how hard it is to do the right thing. But you guys wouldn't know about that would you? I bet you didn't even bother to click on the fucking trailer link! C**ts.
-
As is the rest of the film, but especially that whole opening.
Oh yeah, and the "I KNOW he can GET the job, but can he DO the job?" is awesome.
I want a T-shirt with that on it. -
The only laserdisc film I've watched from beggining to end. Yep. Back in 94 I believe.
-
Just sayin's all.
-
I can't tell if you're trying to be funny and failing...or just failing.
-
joe vs the volcano. man i could talk about joe vs the volcano for days.
-
Really? To each his own, Harry. To each his own.
I'll admit it's a crazy fucking movie. It doesn't know what the hell it's supposed to be. Is it a serial killer movie? A thriller? Action, comedy, romance? I know, let's throw ALL of it in there and see what happens! And we'll have Rod Steiger shout every line of dialogue! This is gold, I tell ya! Gold!
Okay, so I kinda like it. -
Is Streep going to wear that stupid fucking bonnet through the whole movie? It sure looks like it. Other than that I find myself strangely interested in this, though it looks like it might devolve into your typical "look at the Oscar winners shout at each other" kind of shit.
-
and you're a very unhappy human being with an untreatable case of dingleberries. Joe Versus The Volcano was pretty good in its own right.
-
... that's called JOE VS THE VOLCANO.
-
only with the grey apes that are... watching us.
-
Maybe loses to the Tommy Lee Jones one, but still, that's pretty good, being 2nd best movie with volcano on it's title. And it got Tom Hanks in it! By the way in the end he survives.
-
that's all.
-
If you only read movie sites, and you don't have any awareness of books and plays (both are written, FYI), then yes, you could have a mild case of illiteracy. Using the word "blab" about a two-line post is another sign. Idiot.
-
that shot of Tom Hanks with the huge moon in the background ... and Meg Ryan at her cutest.
-
A really great, fun film. Its surreal enough to buck the rom com conventions, and has a spectacular cast (supporting cast particularly... Abe Vigoda, Nathan Lane, Robert Stack, Dan Hedaya!!) and the first section in the office is so damn effective by the time we get to 'sucking the juice out of my eyeballs' ... well, you realize you've been thinking the same thing for the past half hour. Surreal, funny, and with enough depth and ambiguity to make it worth a little though. Seriously though, watch it.

oh yeah, and Ossie Davis...Carol Kane... Amanda Plummer... Lloyd
by subtlety
them too. awesome.
-
this time the volcano wins like it should have in the first one because that was a terrible movie.
-
sucks and everyone else is a hater, allow me to expound. I've seen the movie. The cast yes is great. But that doesn't alway make a great movie as is the case here. I can't say how bad it is because after seeing it I realized how much time I wasted, never saw it again, and can't even recall how bad it was. It's like it was so boring it's been blocked from my memory. I haven't seen You've Got Mail only because Sleepless was boring, I gave Hanks/Ryan a second chance. I'm not giving them a third chance.
-
...Thank you for my life. I forgot how big you are."
Love that scene. Something weirdly moving about it. Could have been total cheese, but Hanks sells it effortlessly.
Also, don't tell me you've never imagined bitch-slapping someone at work with one of those awesome rubber arms.
"I know he can get the job, but can he DO the job?" -
Anyone that didn't should be checked for Brain Cloud.
-
here's what I asked...again:
a) Harry called it "an awards-minded project". how does the movie being described that way negate any past awards in previous forms? (you ignored that question)
b) how exactly would illiteracy cause whatever your blabbing about? (you mentioned "reading movie sites"...even though Harry basically INVENTED movie sites, and grew up travelling the world and reading every book he could get his hands on. (fail)
c) think before you type. (clearly you ignored this one, too.)want to try again?

This is the comeback I've been waiting for! Now wheres the Monster Squad Guy?
-
Luggage is the central preoccupation of my life.
