Harry celebrates another Coen hilarity, BURN AFTER READING!!!

Published at:  Sep 10, 2008 11:25:47 PM CDT

God, I love the Coen Brothers!

Their films are consistently amongst my favorite film experiences. In their own way, the Coens are critics. Except, they don’t write criticism in a newspaper or upon any blog – and they don’t do anything so low brow as to actually say what they’re criticizing, but their films are what they have to say about genres, styles, literature, society, regions and the world we live in.

They’re satirists at the utmost level of cinematic creation. But they’re more than just satirists, they’re poets and they’re comedians. They elevate their actors to existing in their cinematic universe. Just look at George Clooney in Coen films… He is, at the very least, 100 times better than when he isn’t in their hands – and he’s always pretty damn sharp.

With this film, the Coen Brothers are not lambasting Bush or the Republicans, nor are they going after the Liberals. They narrow their sites upon the world of Intelligence gathering, Information Trading, the modern world of Internet Affairs and those that frequent gyms and exercise. Oh… And the D.C. area in general.

The resulting film is exquisitely hilarious, breathtakingly absurd and violently sublime.

They film seems to begin with a series of completely unrelated characters simply going about their lives. We meet John Malkovich’s OSBORNE COX – a fiercely intelligent and frustrated man that feels he is constantly surrounded by unneeded beauracracy and general stupidity – He was an Intelligence Analyst working on analyzing “The Balkans”. We meet his wife, Tilda Swinton’s KATIE COX – a cold hearted cruel bitch of a lady, that is so myopically focused on herself that she only cares about her own status. Osborne is demoted, then quits his job and goes home at the beginning, where he finds his wife being concerned about some sort of cheese thing for the soiree that they’re throwing that night for the Pfarrers.

George Clooney plays HARRY PFARRER – some sort of operative in the State Department, he carries a gun, but has never fired it. His wife is an author of Children’s Books about a cuddily creature that finds itself in the workings of Washington. Turns out that Harry is having an affair with KATIE COX – who wants him to divorce his wife, and she’ll divorce her husband. In her path to divorce she copies Osborne’s files and financials to give to her divorce attorney –

MEANWHILE – completely unrelated is Frances McDormand’s LINDA LITZKE and Brad Pitt’s CHAD FELDHEIMER – they’re just your average HARDBODIES trainers – those folks at the gym that fire you up for your workout, that preach self-improvement and physical beauty. Linda is aging and wants to reinvent her body through surgical procedure, as she’s lonely and wants to find an ideal man for her. Brad’s CHAD. Well. He’s CHAD. And CHAD is an intensely singular individual that is defined only by being CHAD. In watching the film, you’ll discover what I mean. But I really don’t have words to describe CHAD, more than the name CHAD describes CHAD. Like those CHADS in Florida back in 2000… CHADS could fuck up the entire universe.

Those are the basic characters. What they want, what they’re like. Now – you put someone like the Coen Brothers in charge of all of that – and you have them orchestrating, pulling the strings for what purpose? Well, a fellow outside the theater came up to me declaring that the Coen Brothers are the masters of “The Clusterfuck” – essentially meaning, they do chaos better than Satan.

Basically they’re like those 3500 scientists that want to see what protons going at 99.99% Light Speed colliding into one another… they just want to see what happens. And I believe that in the construction of their films… essentially that’s what the Coens do. They are the most literate and cinematic fans of THE THREE STOOGES and THE MARX BROTHERS. They take periods, regions and character types – write them as perfect as you could. Design immaculate sets, shots and situations… but at the end, they would build it all, just to see it blow up.

It’s like when I was a kid. I’d spend 2 hours setting up little green army men in the sand at the base of my 3 story club house… then I’d haul rocks up to the top of club house and then DESTROY THEM, THEIR TANKS and when I was done, I’d climb down from my high vantage point and discover the glory of my destruction.

That’s THE COEN BROTHERS – and it’s genius. Michael Bay essentially does the same thing, but the only tools he has is in the actual explosions. Bay doesn’t have the tools to isolate characters, create convincing situations and emotional motivations, to exquisitely lay it all out. All Bay can do is blow shit up. The COENS… my god. They can do it all. They create explosions not out of napalm and gasoline, but out of character collisions that will BLOW YOUR MIND.

Just ask CHAD.

Goddamn I love the Coen Brothers and I love BURN AFTER READING. This is very much in the vein of their films like OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU and THE BIG LEBOWSKI… only in the world of paranoid Washington thrillers and crime shenanigans.

If you love their films – this is bliss.

This movie is as great as Harry says.

    by stubbadub

I was at the screening tonight, and I am still laughing. This movie is every bit the classic Coen comedy. I was shocked to see the scores on Metacritic after getting back, but I remember Lebowski getting similar reviews when it hit theaters. If you like the big Coen comedies, this is a no brainer. You have to see this film.

    by whinynegativebitch

Making fun of something is not the same as satirising it. Michael Bay? Explosions? Cluster Fucks? I swear to god Harry sleeps through 99 per cent of the movies he watches. He runs a great site, but he has to be one of the most confounding film reviewers in the world. Hope this film is more Lebowski and less Cruelty.

    by whinynegativebitch

Um, Millers Crossing, Fargo, No Country, Lebowski, and Arizon are all far, far better than Man. Man simply exsists as the later period film that wasn't as bad as The Ladykillers or Intolerable Cruelty.

except Ladykillers. God that film was so labourious. The first hour of cruelty is the best, the rest is unfunny. The film is now seen by many as shadow of things to come for Catherine Zeta Jones. A couple of years after that Movie, she and Micheal the Mummy douglas sued a trashy UK Magazine. and lost and managed to look every inch the spoilt diva bitch in Court. That line about a million means nothing to people like me and micheal ended whatever respect(minimal) or love(which was nil) she had in uk. which was none to begin with. apart from victoria beckham and heather mills. there is nobody that UK loathe more that Catherine Zeta Jones.

    by fartedinthefaceofhollywood

the Coen Brothers films are priceless in the sense that they are so memorable, ill never forget the fight between Nicolas Cage and John Goodman in the trailer in Raising Arizona, or when John Goodman pulled his friend (Forsythe) out of the mud one handed yelling in the rain, or Jeff Bridges trying to flick a joint out of a window thats rolled up freaking out and pouring beer in his lap only to ram into a dumpster, and come on "shut the fuck up donnie" is classic in itself, and that unforgettable part in Fargo seeing that guy stuffing Bushemi in the wood chipper. the Coen Brothers are geniuses in film-making with the majority of their works, they are such visual directors...i love it.

    by mosquito march

That was the last time I truly enjoyed a Coen Brothers movie. Many will disagree, but I thought NO COUNTRY fell to bits as soon as Brolin was taken out of the picture and I ultimately didn't give a fuck about the film. And MAN WHO WASN'T THERE, INTOLERABLE CRUELTY, and LADYKILLERS were way beneath them. I have to agree with artvanderlay - THE BIG LEBOWSKI is their best film. As much as I loved every other Coens film before that, that's the one I go back to over and over again. It felt almost as if they made the movie specifically for me.

    No Country Is Their Best Movie{SPOILERS}

    by lucasdefender

This film succeeds at being important but not in a pretentious way. Its observation, or what I saw as its observation, was a modern day illustration of the sad state of man found in Ecclesiastes. "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. Its all chasing after the wind." The movie for the first two thirds focuses on how we like to view the world-that what we do matters, and that it really is important to see the better prevail against evil. During these first two acts this belief is challenged by our villain with morality resting on a coin toss. We are meant to see the villain as a sociopath and ruthless. Suddenly,in the third act WHAM!! The one we presupposed our hero is gunned down by some nobody drug gang from mexico, and this occurs in the absence of our presence. This suggested to me that I was supposed to feel that whether our hero lived or died, it did not matter.....WHAT? But I thought that the better would win, or at least lose in a noble way to our antagonist. No, rather the gang escapes, our villain gets his money, and he even succeeds at killing the protagonist wife. Why?-Because in this world the villain argues, their is no morality. Only chance, and therefore chance is fate and therefore it does not matter. The world will not change nor will it care that the villain won and the better lost. If this is a truth about our world then it is devastating{the not so humorous side of nhilism-"Whats The Point Of Anything. It Is All Vanity"} I became convinced that such was the point of this film by the description of Tommy Lee Jones dream.....His father who has passed is alive in his dream, preparing a place of warmth, light and comfort from the dark and cold that will be ready for Tommy Lee Jones when he arrives, and then he wakes up.Whats devastating is that we are not like the animals that act on instinct. Instead, we crave meaning, somthing good and absolute to hold onto for dear life in this world. Instead, this meaning and goodness is replaced with anxiety and hope that is only fullfilled in our dreams. His father is dead and ultimately a world that has rejected its God is left in the cold and dark where nothing matters

The big lebowski is about two men....

    by emeraldboy

Both called Jeffrey Lebowski. One is called the Dude(jeff bridges) and the other is the big Lebowski(david Huddlestone). Its a story of Mistaken Identity. About bowling. About the iraq war and the vietnam. its about time John goodman got more work. It has a terrific Musical number involving bowling and Kenny Roger's I just checked in to see what condition my condition was in. and carpets. and nihilists.

What I liked best about NCFOM

    by zinc_chameleon

Was how the Coens understood Texas gun mentality. The Brolin character could have paid a couple of years worth of bills, just stealing all the firearms and selling them under the counter (the HK MP5 was brand-new back then, and worth serious bucks), but NO, he decides to help a dying drug dealer, and even then when he finds the bag, he could have lifted an easy $1000 and no one would have noticed, but NO, he decides to take the whole bag. The Coens got me one creeping inch at a time.

    by cherryvalance

when that one thing happened. You know what I mean if you saw it. I thought there would be no point in watching the rest of the movie. But then it was still really good. I loved that Sledge Hammer was in it. The whole cast was great. It was weird because me and this one old guy in the row in front of me were laughing our asses off the whole time and everyone else was just kinda silent. I couldn't figure out why, but that made it even funnier. The scene with CHAD in the car is already a classic in my book. I had the time of my life!

Just for the record, I felt and still feel that NCFOM and TWBB were a toss up for which one was the better. While the latter absolutely challenged my understanding of how far acting could go and the film, gave me to date, one of the grandest experiances I have ever had at the movies, the former in a very real way for me, reminded of something profound that I do believe in..... and this it did to me from behind. I did not see it coming and when the credits rolled I had lost my breathe-literally, the wind was knocked out of me.

Way to be bipartisan Harry by linking to Obama's site

    by damnyou

Harry, this is your site and you have every right to put up any advertisements or proclaim any person the right person for any political office. But you lose major points in credibility when not only close the talkback on a thread that could have fostered good discussion on both candidates and the state of apathy and voting our country faces, and for having your "voter registration site" be nothing more than a means to get more people signed up to one of the candidates mailing lists.
For shame, I thought you were honestly going to make a plea for all people of all opinions to go out and vote, and instead you only want them exposed to your opinions, and your candidate.
If you want to fix this, you should post links to both candidates, or even third party candidates, platforms so your readers can see what they stand for, and as for registering to vote link to a non-partisan site. Just my thoughts.

The reason tha bay gets so much hate..

    by emeraldboy

is that some people think hollywood should be making more intelligent films. not less of them. I remember a few years hearing that Scorcese really hated Lucas and Speilberg for destroying old hollywood. Scorcese grew up on gangster movies and musicals. Loved the cinema of John Cassevettes. those are the films that he would one day make. With Goodfellas and new york, new york etc. Scorceses films were loved by the Critics(except Gangs of New YOrk and the Aviator) didbt do well at the box office(exception being the departed) which the critics didnt like but it was huge at the box office. Critics dont like Bay or the films he makes becuase they feel that hollywood should be making more summer films with a brain. All of bays films are brainless. Hollywood is not a place to make small films. He wanted to make small films. But Marty felt that George and steven had turned hollywood into a place where hollywood didnt make the kind of films he wanted to see. Even though Marty was the film maker who brought the mean streets to the world. But somepeople get bored by intelligent films. Me i like both kinds of films.

    South Park Got It Right...

    by fasterpussycat

No, Bay doesn't know the difference between special effects and ideas.

Bay gives good violence. No argument. Things go boom, the knuckle draggers in the theater drool and get hard-ons. I just wish someone would give him a decent script and tell him it's okay to dial back a bit and stop telling his actors to behave like cartoon characters on meth.

I'm still hoping TRANSFORMERS 2 has a focus on...the fucking robots and not the stupid who-gives-a-shit human character "stories." I came to your movie to watch some decent FX and some robots go rock 'em sock 'em, Bay - not to watch Megan Fox pretend to act and follow a storyline about hackers that even a six year old would find hard to swallow.

    Should not have killed Chad

    by drath

Really ruined it for me when the killed him off. I detested Clooney and McDormand's characters--that is I did not find them entertaining. I sure wasn't interested in as much of them as we got of them. Swinton was funny as the uber bitch--who of COURSE had to work with kids, and Jk Simmons had the best scene. But I'm disturbed by the killings in this and that anyone thinks they were good. Leave that shit in nihilistic crap like that No Country for Old Men that everyone keeps pissing themselves to praise.

    by lucasdefender

Check rottentomatoes.com for reveiws on The Departed. The critics loved the crap out of that movie. And, while Lucas and Speilberg certainly played a huge part in making hollywood films dumber, it was not due to the qulity of the films they made but the receipts they produced. Indeed, they have made among the best films ever made, "(people) will remember it before the end comes." LOTR ROTK quote Gandolf- or something like that.

Pretty good for a comedy, so so for a Coen film

    by mraig

Brad Pitt was amazing in this, and every second he was on the screen you just wanted him to keep being on the screen. Perfect marriage of filmmakers (Coens live oddball quirky weirdos) and actor (Pitt loves to really throw himself into a part). Clooney was as good as he gets (this was pretty much just the same character he played in 'O Brother', but with Dapper Dan hair treatment replaced with jogging). The visual of the chair that Clooney builds is worth the price of admission by itself. JK Simmons is good as usual in his two scenes. But this won't go down as one of their classics. It sort of felt like an attempt to match the achievements of Big Lebowski (which might not be their best movie, but it's my favorite) with its convoluted plot folding in on itself, but it didn't have nearly as many memorable moments or lines or characters. Still, I echo the sentiment that the Coens at fifty percent are as good as or better than most at a hundred. They're always interesting (especially visually--God, that chair!) and their movies are always worth seeing at least once.

Brad pitt was a revelation in the movie. as he was in Jesse james. Very very good film. very funny stuff. The only slight quibble was Tilda Swinton I know she played a cold bitch. but why was so she underused. But JK simmons was hilarious. "that was a clusterfuck". ending was too abrupt. I love the coens. Ladykillers is the only film that I cant watch. I have tried. But I get in the first 5 mins. then when hanks appears. I am compelled to stop watching. I endured the terminal. god that film was terrible.

I loved that scene in such and such a film where this or that happened. the response to that would usually i dont remember that....but that scene in burn after reading with chad and linda where they blackmail ozzy is very very funny.. Clooney was great in it too. but McDormands hairstyle was based on Linda Tripp. You dont remember linda Tripp. She was all part of the repbublicans expensive plot to bring down clinton. Hilary knew alot more than she knows. Give bill a divorce. Hill will take bill to the cleaners. you mark my words. He did destroy her campaign.

was an attempt(pressurerised by studio in this case universal) at commercial filmmaking. pitt and clooney are both big box office. I would love them to do another small film. they have tried this before and it hasnt been successful. Intorable cruelty(very funny to begin, not so at the end)
