Fox Sets Meeting To Discuss Screwing Up More Superhero Franchises!!

Published at:  Sep 10, 2008 2:19:22 PM CDT

Merrick here...

Seems a strategy meeting has been scheduled at Fox, with an eye towards gauging the viability of its various super hero dudes and dudettes. Can't see much good coming out of this.

Though Fox has no plans for a major overhaul, the studio has scheduled a strategy meeting to assess the status of its superheroes, a group sorely missed this summer. On the agenda, Fox will mull the possibility of more "X-Men" spinoffs, including a young-X-Men project as well as "Deadpool," based on a character played by Ryan Reynolds in "Wolverine." The studio is even considering reviving the "Daredevil" property.

..says THIS ARTICLE in Variety, which also discusses oft-rumored issues plaguing the upcoming WOLVERINE movie (as well as the BABYLON A.D debacle, currently decomposing in theaters).

Two recent productions, "Babylon A.D." and "Wolverine," were rumored to have gone through Fox's on-set maelstrom.

On the eve of the film's release, "Babylon" helmer Mathieu Kassovitz publicly claimed the studio ruined his longtime passion project. "Wolverine" helmer Gavin Hood was nearly fired, according to sources, because of squabbles with the studio, and two backup directors were in place before Richard Donner -- who is married to the film's producer Lauren Shuler Donner -- flew to the Australian set to smooth things over. At the time, Fox insisted that Richard Donner was on-set because he is a producer on the film. However, current credits for the film list various producers, but Donner is not one of them.

All of this, and more, can be found by JUMPING TO THE PIECE.

I don't think a stand alone movie is needed, we got a lot of his back story in X2 and this will just flesh that out and give us some villains that we don't give a fuck about. Get a decent director to do X4 if they really want to roll Wolverine out again.

    by montimer

Marvel should be negotiating buying back these properties ASAP. If they could come to a similar arrangement with Fox that they had with Universal when they re-did The Incredible Hulk, where Marvel finance and take charge of a remake of the films, while Fox take the distrbution, and also perhaps take a percentage as well it would suit everyone.

The films would be better, and Fox would get a free lunch.

If it's true that all Fox care about is profit margins then surely this is the best possible course of action.

    Daredevil deserves to be rebooted

    by tvguy4566

It has so much potential as a comic book movie franchise and it deserves better than that Ben Affleck dreck of a movie. I don't know if I have confidence that Fox can do a reboot any better than the original, but I wouldn't mind seeing them try if they put it in the hands of a competent director and writer.

Unfortunately, they may screw these series up so bad, Marvel may not want there properties back. Best thing we can do, is stop going to see the crap that Fox keeps dishing out. Maybe they'll wise up and leave the movie making to the professionals.

I agree with Banzai Rootskibango, if guys at Fox are smart, they will learn lesson from TDK and make more "adult" DD movie. After TDK we can see that is possible to do more mature flick, without getting rid of fox beloved PG-13 rating.
Brian Bendis said in his recent interview, that he wants to do a DD movie script. He knows Murdock character, and Marvel U enough to do a decent job.

    Fox is in a pickle.

    by orbots commander

The only superheros they have movie rights to are the X-Men characters they already filmed, including Wolverine, and any future Daredevil and Fantastic Four movie. Do you think that since Marvel is now producing their own fare that they'd sell off any more of their characters to Fox? I don't even think Fox has rights to other 'X' titles, like X-Factor or New Mutants, since Marvel can legitimately claim that those are separate distinct properties. All Fox can do is keep making more X-Men movies, where they were dumb enough to kill half the characters, maybe reboot Daredevil and make another turd-tastic FF4 flick. The last one was pretty terrible.

I think Wolverine's going to do HUGE business, and I think it's going to be good, but that's in spite of Fox, not because of it. The trailer kicked ass. And anyone who thinks DD doesn't ever have a chance of coming back, with or without Affleck, needs to pay more attention. All super hero movies suck because...

    by hikaru ichijo

filmmakers mistakenly attempt to bring the stories into our reality, when, in fact, we enjoy comics for their ability to transport us FROM our reality. These movies are lauded for several years, and then are relegated to the pop cultural scrap heap where they belong, only to be replaced by a more contemporary vision, thus allowing the cycle to continue.

They need to work out some sort of deal where Marvel produces and manages their properties while they pay for them and get most of the profits. Good posts here from a lot of people... Fox, you listening?

    by daytripper69

I'm in agreement with some of you talkbackers. 1) Marvel should buy back their properties as they are the only studio that has a firm understanding of the material. Fox (esp. that Tom Rothman character) is run by executives who underestimate their core audience and seems only to be concerned with turning a profit. 2) Daredevil definitely deserves to be rebooted & done right, and I know just the right director who would be perfect for the job: QuentinTarantino. The man is smart enough and he loves his comic books. (Check out the silhouette samurai battle from Kill Bill One and tell me that wasn’t Miller-influenced.) 3) This new Wolverine movie should have been a direct adaptation of the Chris Claremont/Frank Miller miniseries from the early 80s. The storyline was compelling, had plenty of action, and did not deal much with Wolverine's past, which had already been dealt with in X2. I like the idea a young X-Men movie, by the way (only, of course, if Fox doesn’t get their grubby little mitts on it.) Flick should center on their formative years, with the core members of Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Beast, and Iceman. Go totally Lee and Kirby on it. Set the movie at a different continuity from the Bryan Singer films. Do a Sentinels storyline!

At this point, Marvel is the only "studio" where I see the name and I am instantly more likely to see the film. I don't feel that way about any other studio. Also, to what extent does FOX have control over Marvel's mutants? Could they just make a Cable movie if they felt like it? Do they own every human in Marvel who was born with powers instead of got them by accident? How did they package these deals? The same could be asked for the other studios. Fox executives have some cheek thinking that comic book fans will buy into their cocaine driven psychopathic stupidity when they are seeking to stop the world from seeing a decebnt take on moore's Watchmen. If Fox continues to seek to hold back the Watchmen movie then any attempt to push superhero movies will backfire due to a fan boycott. No Fox superheor movies until they back off from Watchmen. Simple. As. That.

You think Marvel wouldn't like their properties back?

Fox and Sony know that no matter what, the mutant (and yes they all count as one property), Spider-Man and Fantastic Four properties are a gold mine whether the films are good or not.

  • I realize this is off-topic, but only slightly, unlike some of my posts

From the article: "Of the eight films Fox released between May 2 and Sept. 1, only "[What Happened in] Vegas" benefited from good word of mouth -- which was reflected not only by the box office, but by critical reaction."
I know it did good at the box office because that kind of shit often does, but did it really have good word of mouth and a good critical reaction?

They'll hire one of the "actors" from current crop of fake reality shows, High School Musical, or Gossip Girl to play a younger Matt Murdock. Maybe he's a law student now or wait he's the son of Matt Murdock and Elektra. He acts very feminine, but he's not gay. His best friend is gay though and his girlfriend is the daughter of the kingpin. Oh and he's not blind either and his costume will have a cape and he has all kinds of gadgets and cars (merchandising people). No one calls him Daredevil either, just DD as to not offend any religous groups.

I better stop now Rothman is gonna use this for a DD reboot.

the Directors Cut of Daredevil was a decent film....the opening bit as he took the costume off really captured the essence of DD, he isn't a "super" hero, these nightly battles take a toil on him, but he keeps going back out there...The film is underrated and under appreciated- a sequel would be welcome..... bringing Affleck back wouldn't be a bad idea (though I doubt he'd do it now)...And Michel Clarke Duncan as Kingpin-not a bad casting choice either....

wow.. fox sucks grandma ass. That is no way to develop a creative idea. I love the Alan Dean Foster part:
'A novelization of the film was authored by Alan Dean Foster. His adaptations includes many scenes that were cut from the final film, some of which later reappeared in the Assembly Cut. Foster wanted his adaptation to differ from the film's script, which he disliked, but Walter Hill declared he should not alter the storyline. Foster later commented: "So out went my carefully constructed motivations for all the principal prisoners, my preserving the life of Newt (her killing in the film is an obscenity) and much else. Embittered by this experience, that's why I turned down Resurrection."'

WOLVERINE is going to be great!

    by banzai rootskibango

X2 is one of THE greatest comic book movies of all time...right up there with Dark Knight and Spidey 2.

It's not pheasible for Fox to make X4 because of the major fuck ups of X3...but, they are smart in perhaps starting up a whole new series of single-character films based on the X universe, each with the opportunity to give us the mutants that couldn't make it to the first three X films.

All they can do is reboot X-Men, but that wouldn't make sense either as long as they have a viable money-maker with Jackman in his own series.

The WOLVERINE trailer was great and that movie is gonn rock.

Daredevil needs to take a cue from Dark Knight and have a grown-up/serious/edgy take on the material.

As far as MARVEL is concerned, they need to buy back all of their properties and give them the treatments they deserve.

Also, NO MORE RAIMI FOR SPIDER-MAN! REBOOT! These things work in 'threes'...and Raimi already had the first three...CHANGE IT UP! No more revenge jazz dance sequences!

Sure, Raimi had Spidey 1 which was great, and Spidey 2 which is one of the best ever but he slipped up with 3 and that slip-up fucked over the black suit storyline and shortchanged the Venom character.

Also, Sandman was stupid. Is stupid. And will always be stupid.

WTF? Donner didn't fuck up Superman!

    by bob cryptonight

Donner kept that film from turning into a massive disaster with a cameo by Telly Savalas (as a man on the street mistaken for Luthor), having Lex Luthor played as a neurotic who nervously chewed tissues (I'm not kidding), and flying effects that were just an afterthought by the producers (not to mention one of the producers insisting on a screen test for his wife's DENTIST for the title role--just because the guy had a square jaw). Donner made ONE film in 1977-78, inheriting the project from Guy Hanmilton who had no idea how to do Superman. Donner had one shot (with only a few weeks prep time) and the producers nickle-and-dimed him all the way, so much so that he stopped talking to them. And the crew sided with him. Everthing that came AFTER "Superman: The Movie" was the work of the producers and their toady directors. It's actually a very interesting story, if you are into film making. Donner also advised Singer during the scripting of the fist X-MEN.

comes as much from the horrible miscasting of Elektra, the horrible way the character was used in general, and the lack of a real Bullseye in costume. We all know you can't cover up the faces of the stars! I would see Assface as DD again if the script was decent. I didn't have any problem with him as Murdock. I also don't think anything was done in X3 that could stop them from making a 4th. They're practically making Wolverine a big mutant team-up anyways.

    by xanthos samurai

I can't be the only one who thinks that the idea of a Deadpool movie is just AWFUL. Deadpool is a great character on paper, but I seriously doubt that anyone would be able to do him justice on screen. He'll either come off as all assassin without any humor or as a loony tune who happens to kill people and neither one of those is anywhere near correct.

Also - Never saw the Daredevil movie but I can't help but think that nobody would pay any attention to a reboot if they made one. They made a damn good reboot of the Hulk and it performed only decently at the box office. I think the majority of the public really doesn't have the patience to wait around for these studios to get these movies right - they lose interest at the first sign of suck.

One of Deadpool's key traits is his meta awareness of the fact he's a ridiculous comic book character and his skewering of traditional comic book and superhero conventions. The only way I can see them carrying that to film would be to have him act as a self aware narrator whos not afraid to call out the silly and cliched stuff that's happening on screen to the audience, ala Robert Downey Jr.'s characterin Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

    Fox has always been nutty.

    by docpazuzu

I was watching the doc Behind the Planet of the Apes last week and was astonished at the stupidity and stinginess. These days when you make a sequel to a successful film you throw more money into it since you pretty much know you're going to make a tidy profit with a built-in audience. With each successive Apes sequel, Fox kept cutting the budget, the cynical rationale being "yes, we have a built-in audience, so why spend more money on the production when we can spend less and still make B.O.?"

Even more telling is listening to Richard Zanuck, who comes off as a bit of a moron. He's the only person who doesn't think POTA mirrors anything in America at the time. He says he can't see anything other than an adventure movie in it.

    Can we talk Daredevil?

    by kdoc13

Look, I actually really liked Daredevil. I was a fan of the books, I was a fan of the movie. Especially the Director's Cut. Which as said before was much better than the original cut.

That being said though. Daredevil had some serious flaws. First, Kingpin. If you've really got only one really big bad guy, you don't get rid of him in the first movie. Especially in such a lame way.

Elecktra. I love me some Jennifer Garner. But she wasn't Elecktra. I wanted Angelina Jolie, tits flopping around, in a red catsuit, and sporting a greek accent.

Backstory. It's an origin movie, you have to tell the backstory. But the problem is, unless you make the entire move about him getting to that point, like Batman Begins, you really are just taking a detour from the main story, or making the ultimate clash between the villain and the hero predictable.

That's actually it, those are the problems with Daredevil. You can knock Affleck, but who else could have played him back then? Josh Hartnet? Vince Vaughn? At that point the list of names that could pull it off were pretty slim. People forget David freaking Schwimmer was being talked about. What else, the CGI? It wasn't given the budget to be on par with Spiderman. Most people had no clue who Daredevil was, it wasn't going to get the budget for bigger stunts or better CGI. Bullseye? I don't care what anyone says, Bullseye is one of the best bad guys filmed. The boredom with killing in ordinary ways, the self-hype. Colin Farrell nailed it. And I defy anyone to tell me they didn't enjoy the way he offed the old lady on the plane.

I personally hope they do another Daredevil, and I hope they bring back Affleck. Forget Kevin Smith, let his stick to dick and fart jokes, it's what he's good at (And I say that as a fan). His superman script is for fanboys only, this kind of movie needs broader appeal to be successful. Other than that, I can't wait for DD2.

I'd love to see a good Daredevil movie.

    by knuckleduster

Mark Steven Johnson's movie really wasn't it. Just imagine a proper, character-driven, fuck-CGI Daredevil vigilante movie. Look at Brian Michael Bendis' work, get a good director and a good actor (Guy Pearce would be great, and he has the correct hair colour, for a change). You don't need a big budget, just like you don't need a big budget to make a good Punisher movie. You need a good story and well developed characters, but Fox just doesn't seem to get that.

GoOD GOd. Here's an idea, Fox: Support the talent.

    by jdanielp

Holly cow. What kind of people are pulling the strings at Fox? Somebody REALLY needs to let them know that life isn't a puppet show.

    FOX blows

    by grendel69

After teh way they treated Xmen and the crappy Fantastic Four movies(which shoudlhave been the ultimate Superhero flicks) I will NEVER see another comic book movie from Fox until Rothman and his lackies are gone.

    Simple advice for Fox.

    by jdanielp

Hire real talent and just leave them alone to do their jobs. Sure, you need to check in once in a while,...see how things are going. But no artist likes to draw with someone looking over his shoulder. It's really not too hard to let real talent shine. Just let them be inspired, you know? (If I ask for too much, then... please ...return the Marvel properties.)

Fox is only interested in one thing: MONEY

    by glenn_the_tool

they want movies that are specifically geared toward the demographics that'll make them the most money but will require them to spend as little as possible. they don't give a shit about a good story, character development, a coherent plot, or visionary filmmakers. they don't care about any of that, they just want a product that appeals to the lowest common denominator. that is why Tom Rothman and his lawyers overrun productions on movies like Babylon A.D. and Wolverine, and that is why they're shooting themselves in the foot. all Fox need to do is look at what Christopher Nolan has done with the Batman franchise to see what other companies are doing right and what Fox is doing wrong. WB hired a talented filmmaker with vision and who "gets" the character, then let him craft the movie. and it has payed off hugely for WB. but when you overtake a production and micromanage it in order to minimize spending while somehow trying to maximize profit, then the product is going to suffer. if they don't get this, there won't ever be another Fox-produced superhero movie to rank among the best. they were lucky that Bryan Singer was a good enough filmmaker to take all the bullshit Fox put him through and still make two great superhero movies.

    x-men movies...

    by dingus khan

early years x-men were boring. the original 5 were a fantastic four re-hash. cyclops and jean grey are a fucking snooze-fest.

the dark phoenix saga can't be done justice without a hefty budget, that is a cosmic battle including different races/planets/kingdoms joining forces to (not) kill her.

they need to re-boot with the nightcrawler, collosus, wolverine, storm, shadowcat, rogue, cyclops team that really put them on the map. have shadowcat be an untouchable narrator (see the movie through the eyes of this young girl, like the comic was when she started).

the x-men are about team dynamic. don't put the soggy blanket members (jean grey, angel, beast).

don't put in melodramatic love stories. don't put in billions of pointless cameos. don't put in kids.

have magneto be an ally until the 3rd one. build a tension between humans and mutants. make the mutants fucking frightening (have rogue flying around like a train, have storm roll in with some intimidating thunderheads, CGI nightcrawler so his acrobatics and teleporting are almost confusing. they need to be scary. it needs more spectacle than "the same thing that happens to everything else".)

    1st movie-x-men vs. sentinels (humans/army)

2nd movie-x-men vs. hellfire club/white queen (mutant vs. mutant, academy vs. academy)

    3rd movie-x-men vs. magneto

and, i would love to see venus or serena williams as storm. she needs to be an imposing figure. she needs to be more warriorlike. storm is a great character that deserves more than being played by the beautifully boring halle berry.

and, for the love of all things dorky, don't put everyone in the same black leather jumpsuits. why are we stripping these characters of their individuality?

i'm fearful of how gambit will be ruined in the wolverine movie.

i just dorked all over my keyboard, but it drives me nuts that the movies all introduced characters just to introduce them. it was an action flick that rarely held up to the source material.

mystique was awesome, though. and, the nightcrawler sequence in the white house was great.

Recast, Reboot and Relauch X-Men for 2011-2012

    by nexxus7

This is probably Fox's most valuable property. After the last movie, which was so-so at best and the box office reflected it, the franchise looked tired and worn. I think the way to save it would be reintroducing it in a few years with a younger and hipper new cast, new art direction (lose the cookie cutter black leather and go with more colorful, high-tech combat uniforms that are evolutions of the comic costumes), pump up the SFX, introduce a villian like Apocalypse or Sentinels or recast the Brotherhood, and follow a storyline like Phoenix/Dark Phoenix, Age of Apocalypse, or go back to the X-Men vs. the all-new kick ass brotherhood of Evil mutants. Then make it a roller coaster ride, popcorn movie as opposed to trying to draw parallels between ML King and Malcolm X. It should just be a movie where superheroes and supervillians exist and they fight like hell for dominance. The audience for these movies want to be wowed.

    Heroes vs Money

    by snm1266

You have to have support and interest to make a franchise. The original Hellboy only made $59 mil and yet it got a sequel. Blade 1,2&3 ($70M, $82M, $52) and they tried to make a series. So why not Ghost Rider and Daredevil? They made $115M and $102M respectively AND Daredevil held the #1 spot at the boxoffice for 2 weeks when it opened. Granted the director's cut of DD is immensely superior to the theatrical cut but I really don't equate box office "failure" with sequels. Hulk got a relaunch. Why not DD & GR? Especially now that Jason Statham has expressed interest in donning the red cowl and horns. Although I have to agree with previous posters in that I have touted Guy Pearce as the perfect Matt Murdock replacement for years.

    X-Men Reboot

    by dennismm

Obviously, recasting is in order. Marsden is a decent enough actor, but he's not particularly charismatic. Cyclops needs to be quiet and brooding but also a leader, not just a convenient target for Wolverine's jokes.

Remember one of Joss Whedon's best X-moments - a damaged but very deadly Sentinel emerges from the woods at the edge of the school's grounds. Everybody runs out in pajamas. Colossus and Wolverine are ready to attack, but Cyclops waves them back. Move, shouts Wolverine! I have to get to the central processor. Stay back, Cyclops replies, grimly. I want this thing off my lawn. He pulls off his visor. Half of a page goes crimson. When the light dies, the Sentinel is scrap and every tree within about 500 feet has been mowed down. Wolverine looks over.

"Summers," he says, " every once in a while I remember why you're in charge."

    Reboot FF, X-Men and DD

    by reflecto

All three have been bad or at least largely mediocre.

The X-films succeeded by not being incredibly horrible out of the gate. They can be much, much more than the drab, workmanlike films that they were. There can be more color, more crazy ideas and characters; give them to Del Toro or something. Their franchise should not be more boring than Hulk or Iron Man.

The FF desperately need a soft reboot with Rachel McAdams as Sue and a new director and writer.

DD deserves so much better as well. Either version of that film was SHIT.

I was watching The Alien 3 documentary and there was some fucking tit from Fox talking complete shite when the editor of the movie and the actors said they were screaming at them not to make some of the changes that the tool was insisting on. Fox is staffed by morons.

    DAREDEVIL Needs A GOOD Reboot

    by laserpants

This time, hire an actor who can act, one who isn't a total douchebag. Also, please feel free to hire a writer who knows how to write and a director who knows how to direct. In addition, the Kingpin is white, Bullseye is scary and cool (not irritating and corny), and Elektra is a badass sexy Greek ninja (not a blank statuesque co-ed who looks kinda hot one second, and then looks like a retarded 10 year old boy the next).
Btw, Matt Damon would make a good Daredevil in case you were wondering.

    Daredevil good?

    by anakinsdiapers

How on gods green earth can anyone who has read Frank Millers Man without fear mini-series (which was his actual DD movie draft) or born again, claim the movie was at all good? Directors cut my ass! Was the totally ridiculous kung fu match between a woman and a blind man in a public park removed? A park, by the way, across from a diner Murdock frequents regularly which was in turn near the courthouse. Pfah. Was the lame cgi DD free-falling what seems to be a hundred stories, landing on his feet and running off removed? The man has hyper-senses and radar, he aint Spider-Man! That film was just a trial to sit thru. When i read born again, it was like crime noir, where the protagonist just happens to wear a red devil costume on some occasions. I think of what Daredevil could have been and it just saddens me.

    And for gods sake...

    by anakinsdiapers

..leave Electra out of any reboots. Stop trying to fit 20 some odd issues of story into a 90 minute movie. Karen Page should be the love interest. By the end of the movie she leaves because she can't handle Matts double life and the hardships it brings. If the movie's successful, then start the Electra story in the sequel.

Is FOX allowed to team-up properties?

    by inwosuxred

They have quite a bit of Marvel's properties as it is. Is there anything preventing them from creating a cohesive universe there? If it is true that they have to make a film every so many years or lose the rights, if they make a cohesive universe, they could use most of the properties in every movie if they wanted to. Obviously the odds are that they would just fuck up multiple franchise possibilities with a single stone, but it would be an economical way to maintain property rights at the very least.

    Daredevil:Director's cut

    by stalkeye

Glad to see this movie finally getting some praise as i have been defending it on AICN for some time.
This is the one that should have been released in the theaters and not the shitty PG-13 version.Guy Pearce as DD? I always visulized him as Cyclops before Singer's XMen came to be.Speaking of Singer, it's ironic that he left X3 to helm SR and guess which one fared better at the box office not to mention more critical praise? If there ever was a DD reboot, cast Jolie as Elektra as I have also previously mentioned on the posts.Matthew Fox just might do it as Murdock. (good suggestion)I can't picture Damon as DD or even Capt A.However, I do agree with his Anti-Palin sentiment.:P
