MEDIUM!! SMALLVILLE!! SUPER-HEROES!! SUNNY!! DEADWOOD!! WIRE!! KILL!! SMART!! HercVault!!

Published at:  Sep 10, 2008 2:07:13 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

A BBC sketch series starring longtime partners-in-comedy Peter Cook (1937-1995) and Dudley Moore (1934-2002), “Not Only … But Also” ran three seasons: January to April 1965, January to February 1966 and February to May 1970.

If you’ve seen the original “Bedazzled,” which was shot between the second and third seasons, you’ll understand why “genius” is not the wrong word for what these guys were up to in those days.

The BBC very cleverly erased most of the “Not Only” tapes (along with most of the “Doctor Who” episodes created during the era). Only bits of the pre-VCR-era "Not Only" survive. “Not Only ... But Also: Best Of ... What's Left”, out today, contains 170 minutes of material from the show, including a guest appearance by John Lennon.

It’s only $16.99 and contains the minidoc “Success Story: Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.”

Glenn Gordon Caron’s “Medium” is always a funny, solid show, and its fourth season was a big one, picking up right after a duplicitous reporter revealed to the world that Alison DuBois was working as a psychic for the Phoenix district attorney’s office. Season three ended with Alison and husband Joe unemployed and wondering how they were going to keep a roof over the heads of their three young daughters.

Kelly Preston, of “Twins” fame, turns up this season as a sexy wench who becomes Joe’s partner in a tech start-up. She’s married to John Travolta, turns 46 next month and still fries my burger, man.

Smallville’s 7th season, the last to feature regular appearances by Lex Luthor, also gave us Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Lana Lang, Pete Ross, Bizarro, Brainiac, Supergirl, Green Arrow, Black Canary, J’onn J’onzz, Jor-El, Zor-El, Lara-El and Dax-Ur. One day, in our lifetimes, we will get a screen Superman as good as “Iron Man” and “The Dark Knight.”

The season is available in both DVD and Blu-ray

Herc’s Popular Pricing Pantry

The 10th season of “Cheers” went on sale last week, so the good folks at CBS Home Entertainment have lowered seasons one through eight to record-low season prices of $16.99!!

Each of the five seasons of the 1959-1964 “Twilight Zone” have fallen (for the moment) to $34.99. These are the “definitive” sets that were selling for north of $100 last year. They are packed silly with extras and were designed for fans (like me) who have already seen every episode 10 to 20 times.

Timed perhaps to coincide with the premiere of Stephen Bochco’s “Raising The Bar” last week, the price of Bochco’s mesmerizing, highly serialized (and O.J.-inspired) “Murder One” has just been cut to $21.99 per season.

Don Knotts’ Emmy-winning turn as Barney Fife during the first five seasons of “The Andy Griffith Show” arguably made the series the funniest of the 1960s. The whole series has just dropped to $16.99 per season. Particularly impressive pricing when one realizes each season ran 30 to 32 episodes.

“From The Earth To The Moon” was $51.99 last week; it’s now $23.99.

The 4400 on Blu Ray. Too bad for me I am too poor (or possibly too greedy)for that. And the fact that they don't exist is also another hurdle.

I'm not really a fan of this show (which doesn't mean that I hate it), but I know a few people who should be damn lucky.

splitting Silverman SE2 into two volumes? LAME

    by wash

Sure it's more than twice as many episodes than the super short Season 1, but splitting a 16 episode season into 2 volumes is pretty tacky.

Been waiting on this show for a long time. Last time I saw it on TV, all the best stuff was edited out. I couldn't watch it again after that. Definitely going to pick up both ASAP.

Anything know any news on this? I'd like to get 3 and 4 on Blu-Ray, but don't want to take that plunge if I can't get the first two in that format as well. I'm compulsive like that.
