Armenians And A Cinder Block!! Capone's Seen THE SHIELD 7.2!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!
A tough start for the final season of “The Shield”! Its 7th-season premiere pulled lower numbers than “Sons of Anarchy” last week and now our own “Capone” hints at a momentary dip in quality for episode two!
I remind readers that things get really exciting for Vic and what’s left of the Strike Team in about five weeks.
Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here, back again on AICN's East Coast to discuss Episode 7.2 of FX's "The Shield." This "Final Act" series-ending season has filled me for so much anxiety that it's literally difficult to concentrate on anything else. It's a feeling I loathe, but it's one I seek out whenever I can and can't get enough of. I've just going to dive right in and dispense with the preamble (you can read my built up for this season in last week's Episode 7.1 review. Let's get to it…
Title?
SNITCH
Writer?
Gary Lennon (writer/director of the 2006 crime drama .45, starring Milla Jovovich; this is his first time writing for "The Shield")
Director?
Gwyneth Horder-Payton (director of 2 episodes of this show, as well as episodes of "The Riches" and "Bionic Woman"; first assistant episodes of 33 episodes of the "The Shield")
Where do we pick things up?
Vic (Michael Chiklis) and Shane (Walton Goggins) make a tentative peace in order to get the gatherer of the intel in the blackmail box out of the country via the reverse coyote route to Mexico, which has served them well in the past. Meanwhile, the Mexicans have bought Vic's false information about the Armenians being in possession of the blackmail box, and they intend to take out Rezian (Ludwig Manukian), who is currently in jail. Remember is Rezian dies, Vic's family dies as well. Shane is still charged with keeping Rezian happy and protecting Vic's family.
What is the mayor doing to make the Strike Team's collective lives a living hell?
The mayor and the police commissioner have put out of list of the 10 most wanted gang bangers in the city. What could possibly be wrong with that? Vic and most other cops anticipate gang members vying for the top spot, or for those gangs that didn't make the list to step up their activities to make a showing. Within hours of the list's release, Vic's theory appears to come become a fact. Still, the Strike Team does manage to turn one murder suspect into an impromptu body guard for Rezian in jail. Homeland Security agents make an appearance in connection with Top 10 List-related murders when someone indicates Al-Qaeda may have infiltrated the L.A. gang scene. Vic smells bullshit.
Hey, don't other people do police work at "The Barn"?
Dutch (Jay Karnes) and Billings (David Marciano) investigate the death of a white singer who lives in an otherwise peaceful Latino apartment complex. Seems a cinder block landed on her head, and nobody saw anything. The feeling that Dutch is starring in his own, equally great show seems verified this week.
Who brought in the Feds?
Laurie Holden's FBI Agent Olivia Murray, who has set up shop in the Barn to help out with the Mexican-Armenian situation barely registers this week.
What I liked.
Shane's reassuring conversation with an accountant set to testify against Rezian. Claudette (CCH Pounder) interrogates a 13-year-old Spook Street gang banger and loses her temper.
What I didn't like.
Whereas Episode 7.1 tied up many of the cliff hangers from last season, this episode feels more low stakes than most. It's far from a bad installment, but it doesn't cover much new ground that we haven't seen on the show before. Neither case holds much weight in the big picture. What this episode DOES do well set the early ground work for the major confrontations yet to come between groups and individuals. If you are slightly unsatisfied with this week's offering, don't worry; things pick up next week, I promise.
How does it end?
A killer is set loose on Rezian in prison. In the aftermath, Vic goes to Pezuela (F.J. Rio) with a new deal involving handling the Armenians, a new price to stay on Pezuela's payroll, and a new payment schedule.

I love this show.
-
There is no other way. This season will not disappoint.
-
I enjoy the ass kicking every time I see an episode. And that includes the lame-ass edited re-runs on Spike.
-
I like to think of The Shield as the comic book version of the Wire. That's not an insult by the way.
-
It's not like they won't air the remaining eps if the ratings aren't there. F the public.
-
They never give an accurate picture of the quality anyway. One look at American Idol should show that.
Surprising that SOA beat out The Shield, though. Good as it was, it's still got to prove itself. No where near as good as the Shield when put up against it.
This is gonna be a kick ass last season! -
vic needs to kick his ass a little more this week just for lols.
-
...isn't about ratings. They're airing it now for ink for FX (and the quality of their programming), possible Emmy nominations, and DVD sales. Given that Sons of Anarchy had a strong debut, it looks like people _are_ tuning in based on the strength of FX's other shows.

Who gets raped this week?
Seriously, isn't there a rape per week on this show? -
even the dvds? if so that blows
-
The original releases of the DVDs were all FS until season 6. Seasons 1-5 were rereleased under Sony who put out season 6, so those may be WS I'm not sure
-
And Herc needs to go watch his DVD sets of Veronica Mars because Capone never said the episode was a dip in quality. It's a transitional episode and it's building to something much bigger. Seeing Shane and Vic actually work together brings mixed feelings as their old friendship seems to spark up a bit only to be stomped back out by Vic. Shane refering to Ronnie as a "whipping boy" struck me as interesting and perhaps foreshadows Ronnie being the one to put this whole thing to rest. Great episode as usual but like Capone, I'm literally in knots about how it's going to end.

Ratings don't mean shit with the reality tv generation running wild. The higher the rating the higher the probability that it's a reality tv program. People watching reality tv definitely miss something in their life if they have to watch other people's lives. I pity them.

He could carry a show on his own.

..were those assholes in the crowd that jeered the old black woman for being a witness. "Stop snitching"! That is the most dumbest self destructive attitude within certain urban communities and people like that should be deported or maybe if their loved one was killed or raped, would they want a witness to come forth in their favor?Enuff rant it was a slightly disapointing ep but I'm sure the payoff is coming as the finale keeps me in suspense.

One of the funniest thing i scene in recent memory..everybody dancing and ol boy showing off that nice dance step right before he got thrown into the car.

Can I get on the top 10 banger list now? -
Couple of things: 1) I wasn't sure if my channel got flipped to COPS when the Spook Street bangers were getting arrested. That was just amazing stuff. 2) I agree with Stalkeye, but that also just shows how great the show is written, when viewers can get all riled up by the behaviors of characters like that, who aren't even real, but feel very real in our world.
-
Ummmm...I think you misread what Stalkeye wrote. He was saying that the "Stop Snitching" attitude was destructive and stupid.
-
Ummmmmmmmm... I think you misread what accordingtojimrulz wrote. He was saying is "sarcasm" is a destructive and stupid way to communicate because so many people miss the joke.;)
-
I know... I'm a perv.

To clear up the whole 'stop snitching' issue. you have to trace the roots of what is truly meant by 'snitching'. A large part of it comes from the FBI's COINTELPRO efforts to dismantle the Black Panthers and their movement to better conditions in urban ghettos. They sent other Black faces(usually undercover cops or associates) into the organization to destroy it, and in a large part, the Civil Rights movement. That's why, even though it is slightly misguided, many Blacks and Latin's treat 'snitching' with contempt because we're usually(whether just or unjustly) the targets of prosecution. Unfortunately, idiots of all colors do stupid shit(murder, prostitution, sell drugs, hurt innocent people), which doesn't help bring about any discussion about REAL issues in urban communities. We should start snitching on all criminals, not just ignorant idiots.
A buddy of mine told me this. If you're walking your child to school, and you pass a guy selling weed, and you call the police, this is not snitching. But if you've bought weed from this guy in the past, and now you want to call the cops, then you're a hypocrite. -
I remember watching an interview with rapper Cam'ron on 60 minutes regarding this particular subject:Stop snitching.Cam mentioned that if he lived next door to a serial killer, he would not contact the local authorities meaning the police, even if it meant more innocent people dying.Instead this coward would just move out and leave the neighbors to their fates. What a fucking asshole and everyone who subscribe to that "Code".
Rich: thanks for providing the info on how that motto started and yes there's a big difference between turining a radical group(Black Panthers) who tried to empower Black people while getting drug dealers off the street, as opposed to low life murderers, rapists, pedophiles, dealers and the like.To help remove crime within neighborhoods one has to have the courage and conviction to speak up and cooperate with the "popo" (Police)unless some cops are on the take, like our boy Mackey one shouldnt worry about retaliation.Your right Grandmuff the writing on the sheild is that good to get me pissed off at that Spook St brat and the idiots chanting. Can't wait to see the finale. -
The little gang banger was frighteningly authentic and the exchange between him and Weems was amazing! This episode had better humor than the last episode, too. That "ordinary dipshit American" line had me rolling! Great stuff!
