GATCHAMAN Movie Footage Snippet & Concept Art New Online!!

Published at:  Sep 08, 2008 10:15:21 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Imagi's website has posted a fleeting glimpse of their GATCHAMAN project. In case you can't place Imagi, this is the same entity who brought us the CGI TMNT last year.

I'm totally not a follower of GATCHAMAN (which originated as a 1972 TV series I guess), but the Imagi site says it's about five reluctant heroes whose unique DNA makes them Earth's best hope to fend of an alien invasion.

CLICK HERE to jump to the Imagi site, where you'll find said peek At GATCHAMAN - as well as concept artwork. The Imagi site is moving slower than my momma's bowels (if at all - also like my momma's bowels). So, if you can't get into it, you can watch a lower quality embed of the footage here:

You know, when is this film coming out? I'd be giggling if that remake of "Phantom of the Paradise" came out at the same time. XD

    All to brief...

It reminded me of one of those architects presentations. "This is how your local shopping mall will look like when we 'Akira-ize' it for just $40mill..."

Also known as Battle of the Planets if you're in the UK but the theme tune was much better for the original Japanese version. I'm humming it now... listen....

And no, they won't have 7-Zark-7 and 1-Robo-1 as they were bastard creations of the American company.

That's the music from Transformers, that car spinning around is the Corvette Centennial followed by the Chevy Beat and others following it, have all been confirmed in Transformers 2, etc. WTfudge?

    "reluctant heros"???

    by circean6

Ok, glad I know this now so I can blot out any future interest. The operatives of the Science Ninja Team Gatchaman were never "reluctant" to slaughter the hordes of Galactor with missles, poison yo-yos, and their bare hands! Tell the gang at Rifftrax another one is on the way..

this is a full CG animated flick, just like the last TMNT, not a "green-screen movie."

    fiery phoenix mode

    by dollar bird

I hope this is good. Battle for the Planets was the only cartoon my dad and I watched together. He liked the designs. I think it was the 1st anime he'd ever seen. (I'm sure if I told him a movie of the show was coming out, he'd say, "What show?") I know they edited the crap out of that show, in all of its American incarnations ("So much for the robot bird.") but it was still fun. I wonder how they'll handle the sexual ambiguity/gender switching of Galactor in this one. I also loved the weird boss villain who spoke just through Galactor's television. (Did the end boss appear gigantic and floating in mid air on the final episode when the Gatchamen take off Galactor's mask? I seem to remember that scene. If that's not how it went down, let me live my lie.)

    by kgersen

wasn't the key villain called Zoltar in the UK Version and SPOILER ALERT***

in the final episode turned out to be a woman behind the mask?

*** or did I dream this up? The enemies various ships were great, all mechanical monstrosities like space squids and sea serpents. Great cartoon. Can only hope film lives up to the memories.

They'll be reluctant heroes because this is an origin

    by terry1978

They're just kids and young adults before the whole G-Force thing even started, and fighting off giant creatures and beasts is not exactly something anyone is all gung ho about...at least not at first.

It's things like this that make me chuckle whenever you guys get all incensed about your "journalistic integrity" being attacked or questioned.
You can't take 5 seconds to type "Gatchaman" into the Internet Movie Database? Even the laziest newspaper intern knows how to use google.

Do a YouTube search for Battle of the Planets.

Same thing. (Well, minus a few edits for gore and violence in the western markets, and the introduction of stupid robots to fill in the lost running time.)
