My Head Explodes And My Body Aches!! Hercules Has Seen Shirley Manson’s First Episode Of TV’s TERMINATOR: TSCC!!

Published at:  Sep 08, 2008 1:30:49 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles 2.1 FAQ

What’s it called?
“Samson and Delilah.”

Who's responsible?
Teleplay is credited to series mastermind Josh Friedman (2005's "War of the Worlds").

What does Fox say?
“Rocked by the Jeep explosion, John's 16th birthday forces him to confront the reality of his destiny alone. Meanwhile, Agent Ellison faces off with his faith and the Feds in the aftermath of Cromartie's massacre, and a new player is introduced, Catherine Weaver (Manson), who is the CEO of a high-tech corporation. Cast: Lena Headey, Thomas Dekker, Summer Glau, Brian Austin Green, Richard T. Jones, Garret Dillahunt, and Shirley Manson. Guest Cast: Dean Winters as Charley Dixon; Sandra Purpuro as Agent Norgaard; Marcus Chait as Justin Tuck; James Urbaniak as Sarkissian; Shane Edelman as Matt Murch; Carlos Sanz as Minister; Robert Guenveur Smith as Sac Federici; Noemi Amarilla as TV Filed Reporter; and Max Perlich as Walsh.”

The big news?
The Connors find themselves confronted by a mechanism from the future they’ve not been menaced by before.

Last season ended with Cameron caught in an explosion. What’s doing with the Connors’ cyborg protector?
Cameron is so damaged she is of little use to the Connors in this installment.

What else is Fox not telling us?
Weaver’s company wants the Turk chess computer many believe will evolve into the murderous, robot-dispatching SkyNet.

How is your beloved Shirley Manson in her acting debut?
Tall, beautiful, dialing back the Scottish accent (mistake!) and slightly less charismatic without the rest of Garbage standing behind her.

What’s this business about Ellison’s faith?
Ellison doesn’t know why he was spared in the first season finale. The bureau puts him on six weeks' paid leave.

What’s doing with Sarah’s ex-fiance Charley Dixon and John’s uncle Derek Reese?
They largely stick to the sidelines for the bulk of this week’s installment. For reasons unclear to me, neither Sarah nor John ring them up for assistance when things go from bad to worse.

What’s good?
This is the best episode of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” since the series’ two-hour pilot. Any fan of the series should love it, and anyone iffy on the series is not likely to be bored. The best scene this week (possibly the best scene in the series so far) involves what’s left of Cameron and two large trucks; Summer Glau sells it hard and sells it well. Catherine Weaver’s introduction is highly memorable. Garrett Dillahunt, now a regular, remains gratifyingly creepy.

What’s not so good?
The Connors in the TV show remain about 90 IQ points stupider than the Connors in the movies. The TV Sarah is a serial blunderer, and her vehicular blunders this week make the terminators' job much too easy. In order to get the writers out of a corner they’ve written themselves into, John does something no human being with a half a brain would. Something the movie Sarah would never let him do. The TV Connors need to smarten the fuck up, and fast, before they squander all the good will banked by the far better movies that spawned this series. Also? It’s still unclear why a terminator would ask Sarah to call to John when we all know terminators can impersonate human voices flawlessly.

How does it end, spoiler-boy?
With a scene, designed to set the online “Sarah Connor” fanbase afire, evoking a memorable sequence from that other ‘80s cyborg masterpiece, the original “RoboCop.”

8 p.m. Monday. Fox.

This is the noise that keeps me awake.

Herc, in T2, the T-1000 tells Sarah to call to John so there is a precedent there. Though eventually it just transforms itself into a duplicate of Sarah.

Well, actually episode 6 was quite good.

    by shan

The episode set mostly in the future war was my personal favourite. Especially their idea of what a rubber skinned T-600 would have looked like. (Note to the T4 makers, the main reason people noticed the T-600's were fake was because of their rubber skin - I think the implication was that they had otherwise human proportions as opposed to being 8 feet tall and having massive miniguns where at least one arm should be).

most people don't know that james cameron was a huge 90210 fan. He actually wanted to make jason priestly the t1000 in T2 but jason couldn't work it into his heavy 90210 schedule. I'm just glad this new show is following through on the dream James Cameron started

Strong in areas, weak in areas

    by ides

I don't mind the departures from strict canon, it's absolutely necessary for a weekly series. I also like that it's not playing perfectly nice (Cameron's allowing the Russian dancer to be executed even though she could have easily stopped it. I really like the fact that the show is at least trying to head in a somewhat philosophical route, taking more cues from Battlestar Galactica than a lot of shows would dare to. Summer Glau was a great casting decision. That said. . .

I think there are still substantial logic problems (characters randomly making moronic decisions), and I am lukewarm (at best) to the actor playing John Connor. His mix of angst and petulance has been grating thus far.

So far, the strengths outweigh the weaknesses, and the tone of the series at least tries to be more intellectual than it has to be, which I appreciate. There have been some moments of spark, and, in spite of its problems, it's definitely playing darker and more complex than I expected. I'll definitely be watching it this season.

Shirley Manson: She Who Must Be Obeyed

    by sans souci

One big hope I have is that Shirley Manson's solo album FINALLY gets released because of her appearence in ther series. (And it's not really a total spoiler to let one know that a song sung by Shirl is featured in the season's premiere) [br][br]
Now despite my fanboy devotion to the Scot siren, some plain truth: it's obvious Shirley's not an actor. Thankfully, the role she's playing actually makes perfect of her limited thespic skill set. In fact, I'd like to see her character team up with Blair Brown's character from "Fringe." They're both the most compelling parts of their respective shows yet get precious little screen time. :-) [br][br]
Hmm...wonder if at any time during the season Shirley will get a chance to pee on somebody...

    T1000 Question

    by codymr

I know this is a little off topic but, as much as I love T2, I've always wondered why the T1000 kept the form of Robert Patrick even though it could change into anybody it sampled. For example, you first see the T1000 as Patrick when it appears out of that time bubble thingy and then it kills and samples a police officer. Why did it only mimic the uniform and not take the full form of the cop... Face, body & uniform? Also, once the T1000 was IDd as a Terminator in the form of Patrick by the Connors and the T800, why did he not change form into someone else to disguise itself? I guess SkyNet did a crappy job of programming the T1000 as an infiltrator unit... must have been a beta release!? I know I am over thinking this, but seriously, is there a retcon explanation for this?

    Gotcha Bitches...

    by bill brasky

Keith Olbermann may be the “voice” of MSNBC, but network executives have decided to yank the talkmeister off its politican anchor desk after the cable channel finishing dead last in the Nielsen rankings of all news coverage during the two weeks of political conventions.

The network announced Monday that Olbermann and Chris Matthews have both been booted as co-hosts on political night coverage in favor of David Gregory, whose White House press corps experience may make him better suited to deliver sober and less opinion-driven assessments of the news.

All summer, MSNBC executives have fought off complaints that Olbermann and Matthews, the network’s top commentators, could serve in the role of impartial newsmen. Those complaints reached a crescendo last week when Olbermann, reporting on the Republican National Convention from New York rather than St. Paul, apologized to the audience after the channel aired a Sept. 11 video tribute crafted by the RNC.

“We would be rightly eviscerated at all quarters, perhaps by the Republican Party itself, for exploiting the memories of the dead, and perhaps even for trying to evoke that pain again. If you reacted to that videotape the way I did, I apologize,” Olbermann said.

The network’s weak ratings during the conventions may have given MSNBC executives the cover they needed to boot Olbermann and Matthews. FOX News Channel topped all broadcast and cable networks with 9.2 million viewers on each of the last two nights of the convention. MSNBC got barely more than a quarter of Fox’s total –2.5 million viewers.

MSNBC also ranked last among the three cable channels during primetime coverage of the last two nights of the Democratic convention.

Olbermann’s hard left views and his catfights with other MSNBC hosts have been the talk of gossip pages all summer. Olbermann sarcastically dismissed Republican pundit Pat Buchanan on the air after Buchanan said the GOP had been enlivened by Sarah Palin’s vice presidential nomination.

“Those reading Us Weekly with the picture of her and her youngest daughter with the word ’scandal’ written across it won’t be so happy,” Olbermann said.

He also expressed no regard for the GOP’s push back against rumors about Palin’s personal life.

“We’ll see if people feel sorry for unfounded rumors on the Internet,” he said. “If that’s the case, Senator Obama’s probably standing up and cheering and waiting for people to feel sorry for him.”

Olbermann’s brash style may also have earned him enemies within his own organization. He was caught on microphones mocking another MSNBC host, Joe Scarborough, when Scarborough was discussing positive developments in McCain’s campaign.

“Jesus, Joe, why don’t you get a shovel?” he asked.

At another time, Matthews snapped at Olbermann on-air when it appeared Olbermann was criticizing him for talking too much. Matthews told TVNewser last week that he and Olbermann get along fine. It’s not clear when Matthews was informed of the decision to bounce him from the anchor spot along with Olbermann.

Asked about the internal fighting at MSNBC, NBC anchor Brian Williams tried to smooth ruffled feathers during an appearance on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” last week.

“Is there no control?” asked host Jon Stewart. “Is it ‘Lord of the Flies’?”

Williams replied that every family has a dynamic of its own.

“But does MSNBC have to be the Lohans?” Stewart said.

As a result of the internal turmoil, Gregory will now anchor MSNBC’s coverage of the presidential and vice presidential debates, as well as on election night, said network spokesman Jeremy Gaines.

Olbermann did score an interview with Barack Obama on his “Countdown” show. That is set to air Monday and will go up against Bill O’Reilly’s interview with Obama on FOX News. A portion of the O’Reilly interview with Obama aired last Thursday and earned O’Reilly his second highest rating ever, with more than 6.6 million viewers.

    by digitalcos

I mean, I don't want to get all "You wouldn't be able to hear explosions in space" nitpicky, but it really bugged me that Cameron walked away from that fiery explosion and house fire with her organic flesh and clothes unsinged. Especially since they show us later, in the same episode, an example of what should have happened to her flesh after the house blows up.Arny in the first movie gets most of his hair singed and his eyebrows burned off, then in the second explosion (allbeit a much larger explosion than Cameron's) all his flesh is gone baby gone.Yeah, I get it. It would be impractical to have all her flesh burned off or blackened. Then I'll tell you what... don't put her in the middle of a fireball. They could have staged an equally impressive explosion without the giant fireball.I'm just sayin' is all...

    About continuity, nytivofan...

    by raymar

Officially, the show takes place in an alternate universe from the events of T3. Both still use T2 as a starting point though. Of course, it is possible to reconcile them: presume the events of T3 happened (Sarah died from cancer, etc.) but in this future Skynet decides to send Cromartie back to kill John in high school leading to the events that then overwrite the T3 timeline (though still perhaps allowing for the future seen in Terminator: Salvation).

It seems like every subsequent episode (T2, T3, TSCC) keeps delaying Judgment Day. In TSCC, it's been over 11 years since the original Judgment Day in 1997. If this keeps happening, won't John eventually be too old to lead the resistance?

Yeah, Shirley apparently does enjoy those same golden showers she sings about. If you ever buy the "Absolute Garbage" CD you'll get a lovely center spread of the boys in the background while Shirl is apparently "making water" in the foreground. Ahem!
I'm actually hoping that if the song featured tonight is either from her solo album or will at least be available for (legal) download somewhere.

This show is a perfect example

    by darthjedi

of how to fuck up a franchise. Some of you people actually think this is good? There is no continuity at all (not to mention the IQ drop of the main characters) and continuity has to be the most important thing to keep in a franchise, regardless if it's a movie or TV. They could have done soooo much with this if they really wanted to. Instead we get the crap that it is.
    So depressing.

    by mrd

I haven't seen the ep yet, but if it's like T2, I imagine the Terminator could not imitate Sarah's voice without first hearing it clearly (which the T-1000 didn't until the final showdown). It doesn't matter that Sarah calls out so much as she says enough (more than "nuh-uh") for him to get a good voice sample.

This was by far the worst episode so far. (spoilers) Manson was awful. Sub-Star Wars prequel trilogy bad acting. Her scene at the end was pointless and stupid; typical dumb villain pointlessly kills underling... after disguising it/herself as a urinal. Plot holes galore. There's the not calling the boys. There's jamming Cameron's chip back in for no reason. There's the fact the feds don't seem to be able to tell the actor's decaying, days-old corpse can't be the shooter because of time of death. There's the numerous injuries that should have killed three members of the cast. And so on. Dumb, dumb, dumb. And all, apparently, so John can get a bad haircut. This ep was only for people who thought Mutant X was a masterpiece.

  • John explained that Cameron's chip damage was only physical. He scraped out the carbon scoring. That's why he believed it would fix her - because he repaired the physical damage that caused the malfunction. That's also why it works. Also, Ellison would've been an idiot to try to attack Cromartie when he sees him. Um, he knows he's an unstoppable Terminator who killed 20 of his men, what can come of him attacking this guy other than, you know, his own horrible death? People need to pay attention, think a little bit. Anyway, this episode was a'ight. Not the best, not the worst. Opening sequence was horrible. I wanna know why Herc bothered to post this talkback when he couldn't even be bothered to give us even ONE spoiler. Why is there a spoiler warning on this? He couldn't be bothered to tell us what happens FOUR MINUTES into the episode - how hard would it have been to say "Cameron goes bad, tries to kill Connors"? That would only spoil the first five minutes, but no. Maybe he's afraid of Fox smackdown or something, but damn this "spoiler post" turned out less than worthless. As for Manson, I thought she was awful until the final reveal explained WHY she was so damn stiff.

You know what was also great about this series? When the Terminator was impersonating John's teacher, and John had no idea the teacher was a Terminator? And the Terminator could have just walked up and used his powerful robot arms to squeeze the head off the savior of the humanity? But instead decided to pull a gun out of his leg and shoot at John from across the room. That was awesome.

whoanecron, the point of that stupid decision on John's part was that he's too attached to Cameron. Lisa, how did you expect Sarah to know that Cameron could somehow magically appear on the other side of a bridge? Honestly, that was impossible. It was Voorhees Unreality Engine usage to the extreme. As for Herc's critiques, um, the T-1000 made Sarah call out to John in Terminator 2, which usually gets fanwanked as a malfunction. And there was no Sarah could've stopped John from bringing Cameron back. She had 1.5 seconds tops to lunge over the car to the other side and tackle him, not gonna happen. Not a great episode, especially not Shirley Manson, but GOD DAMN, people. Just think.

    The complaints...

    by seanny_d

for the most part are valid, I would say. The issues that exist regarding the characters acting in crazy fashion are unacceptable. But there's enough entertainment value beyond that for me to enjoy the show. Also, Manson's acting might just be BRILLIANT because she's a TERMINATOR acting like a HUMAN. Ok, so it still wasn't that great, but you can still have the "trying to be human" excuse for her poor acting. Still though, calling someone a retard for enjoying this show is very mature and certainly leads to intelligent discourse. And finally, ruven76:"Reporters caught up with Christian Bale last week, who said that in the third Batman movie would have a digital version of Heath Ledger. 'I just talked to Christopher Nolan and he was very excited regarding the leaps in technology that we have made. Even in death, Heath's performance can live on.' The next Batman movie will begin filming next fall." You see what I just did there? I made it up, and called it a "source." It doesn't make it true.

We get that Connor let his attachment to the stupid robot cloud his judgment. That's WHY he's a fucking retard and the worst savior of humanity ever.

Even if Cameron snuck into my bed and brought me to orgasm every weekday morning, there's still no way anyone with an IQ over 45 (even you, idiot NinjaRap) would switch Cameron back on so needlessly.

    Sigh

    by closelight

This show continuously pisses me off. Why? Because through the mediocre writing and acting there are moments of near brilliance. The FBI raid in last year final, the future episode, the pilot episode even though it was so uneven. But it just never gets its acting going.

While I'm ranting, why do I get the feeling Summer's terminator is a special needs robot? In T2 you have Arnold's terminator go from near mindless killing machine to "I know now why you cry, but it is something I can never do" and the concept of self sacrifice in what 48 hours? 72? Summer's still feels like its still trying to out do the microwave oven for a personality contest.

Who didn't see the Manson character as a terminator? I will admit the bathroom scene made me laugh.

Here's what people should be complaining about

    by ninjarap

If Cameron knows it was dumb for John to bring her back, she should've asked Sarah to deactivate her. Obviously the T-800 in T2 was able to allow someone else to terminate him at the end of the movie even if he "can't self-terminate." So Cameron, who plainly states what a danger she knows she is, should be able to do the same. Why wouldn't she? Oh yeah, because Summer Glau is contracted to stay on the show. Whatever, no big. You know, the people complaining about all the other stuff this show obviously decided to hate the idea of a lower-budget TV Terminator series from day one. I hope they realize what a tool John was in the movies, too - remember how we learned that his emotional attachment to a terminator is ultimately what kills his ass. Anyway, that's fine. There's nothing in those complaints that is even close to how bad or how stupid many other supposedly beloved shows were. I could bitch a lot more about Buffy episodes, but why would I? Go in with optimism, don't decide to hate something beforehand.

He knows that there's going to be a lot of evil terminators that are going to keep on coming for years to come. He's going to need Cameron to take them on, his mom and uncle won't be able to stop the terminators. He took a risk that paid off! Just like John Mccain took a risk with Sarah Palin. Now the terminators are scared s**tless!

T2 was the end of the story. This show shouldn't exist. And yet I'm very entertained by it. I'm not ashamed of lowering my standards enough to enjoy it. The characters' low IQs are easily rationalized: after decades of fighting killer robots from the future, the Connors are both insane, depressed, and possessed of death wishes. Who wouldn't be?

That they can do the T1000 effects on a TV budget these days. As a kid, I remember when T2 was released and the Robert Patrick T1000 blew everyone's mind it was so revolutionary. There was no way they could come close to achieving that metal morphing effect on TV - at least not until Star Trek did a poor man's version for Odo in DS9.

Many of you are missing the point about John.

    by digitalcos

Is Sarah destined to become the leader of the resistance? No. John is.It's not about Sarah "letting" John do anything. Reactivating Cameron was John's decision. He's going to have to make a lot of decisions that a lot of people are going to disagree with, but that's the kind of leader John's going to need to be.So, why not bury her up to her neck, or whatever, then reactivate her?Again, he wanted to prove that he was willing to put his ass, and quite frankly, everyone elses asses on the line based his confidence in this decision. This won't be the last time he's going to need to do that. He's stepping up and becoming a leader. Now, everyone that's saying it was just because John has the hots for her isn't really thinking this through. Yeah, that's there as a subtext or whatever, but think about it. Future John's the one that sent Cameron back. It's pretty clear by now that there's something different about her. Something that's going to prove invaluable at some point. I mean, beyond her hotness.

Like someone above already said, the T-1000 had been severely damaged in (the extended cut of) T2 and this is why he couldn't mimic voices.

seanny_d, Robocop reference (and then my thoughts on episode)

    by dreamwriter

I thought of Robocop when I saw it too (before reading this site). It's the bathroom scene - guy trash-talking his boss in the bathroom to another coworker, and it turns out the boss was there the whole time. I was just waiting for the chick to come out of one of the stalls :)

Anyways, this episode. I hated the first scene, all that really annoying slow-framerate crap. Other than that I thought it was a cool episode, although the stupidity of characters was annoying. First in John not even responding when asked multiple times if he's OK...dude, you realize your health is the #1 importance for the entire future, right? And it's an important stressful situation, you need to speak up. And of course Sarah looking away from the road when coming up on cars at 90.

I have a theory...the T-1000 chick was talking about how cool it'd be for a computer to break its programming. And guess what, Cameron just did that. She wasn't fixed, her screen clearly said that the order was still to Terminate, and then that the order was overridden. I think Cameron is going to turn out to be the real start of Skynet.

When I wrote last night how shitty this episode was, I expected it to be like a Heroes talkback where everybody told me I was wrong. But instead everone elaborated on every stupid shitty thing in the episode...oh my f'ing god it was a trainwreck. I just don't know what could have happened...I think the producer of the show wrote it...did he just spend 5 minutes on it or what? Last season was quite good and the characters didn't do so many dumb things. I hate GLARING PLOT HOLES. I just can't deal with them. Well I'll fast-forward through next week's episode although I have a feeling that all hope is lost. Didn't they just barely even bring this show back? I didn't do a count either, but it seemed like some thought it was OK and the rest pointed out most of the plot holes that were glaring at me while trying in vain to enjoy it. My main thought while watching this episode was pity for the actors who have to try to act full of enthusiasm and passion when they know they are part of a train wreck..that was sad. The actors are all so much better than that material...except the Garbage chick who can't act...or at least her performance was terrible on this occasion. Well at least we had one good season...or 3/4 season or whatever. Maybe the show will turn it around somehow or maybe it will stay stuck in this Heroes/Bionic Woman level of quality...like I said, it won't last long in that case.

    by david cloverfield

But I think everything was pretty understandable. John knew from experience he wouldn't survive without Cameron. He has this weird connection to machines and Terminators. Sarah must learn to trust in his instincts. Cameron overwrote her own programming. Harrisson knew Cromartie is a terminator and has no chance against him. The T-1000 is all kinds of messed up. (Big supervillain speeches? must've been here a long time. Whatever, I can dig it.) The ep had problems, (the way limping Cameron jasoned all over the place sucked a bit.)

    Records destroyed during the war

    by bellwether

Sure, except that now there's all this time traveling going on, SkyNet could presumably send a terminator back to before the war, find out Sarah's detailed history (at least up to 1984, including the identity of her parents), seal that information in a secure location and wait for Skynet to pick it up in the future... then SkyNet sends another T800 back to the 1920s with detailed files of Sarah's grandfather and eliminates the whole lineage. It's really best not to think about it too much.

digitalcos, NinjaRap and David Cloverfield have it down pretty good, and alot of you arn't even bothering to think. if you want to see mindless TV go watch some reality shit or god help you Prison Break.

    ... *that* being said ...

    my point is this:
it seems alot of you fanboys have lost alot of the fun and well, wonder, of watching t.v. It's not about second guessing every single thing that happens on screen, or shitting on continuity; if you actually care about what's going on with these characters you want to see what happens to them, what they have to deal with, and how the characters from T1 and T2 turn into the characters that will ultimately define what tone and conflicts the coming movie will have to deal with (the fact most of you have overlooked *that* fucking astounds me, remember john connor is being played by fucking Batman!?).

    ... to sum up ...

The show is clearly being written to *try* and blend the fucked up continuity of the movies, (mostly fault to T3 which i still refuse to re-watch) back together so they can actually make another good one. Start getting overjoyed you can have a nerdgasm watching terminators go berserk on national television, even here in Canada, Then we can all just cross our fingers and wait to see what happens next.
Seriously after T3 how can this crazy sci-fi world get any worse?

    by seanny_d

...maybe we can too." Apparently Sarah has forgotten these words that you know, SHE SPOKE when she was thinking about destroying Cameron. Honestly, it just feels like there needs to be a little tinkering going on to make things a little more coherent. I don't mind if it messes with continuity a little bit, but I just want to see some consistency. And they're doing all right so far. Comparing apples to oranges, someone mentioned last year's Heroes, and the difference is that while Terminator clearly has problems, at least it's still entertaining. Heroes was godawful boring last year on TOP of the lack of quality. And Dreamwriter, thanks for the Robocop reference. Now that you mention it, I specifically remember that scene with Miguel Ferrer.

    Robocop VS Terminator

    by adiehardfanwithalethalweapon

The idea was that the Terminators cpu was based off the chip in Robos head. Thus Robo was actualy the luanching pad for Skynet itself. So the resistance sent a human to dispatch Robocop while Skynet sent a Terminator to protect him. Somehow they ended up going toe to toe.

    My Take...

    by murdermostfowl

repeating alot of what David Cloverfield, Alientoast, champvinl, et al have said:

    1) The redhead.... terrible acting. It takes a special person with alot of talent to pull off Evil corporate woman, and she aint it. Very few actors are. Fortunately due to the latitude the character has, she can be easily replaced with another actor/actress. ( I'm frothing at the mouth for Robert Patrick )
    2) John reactivating Cameron: John's motive were incorrectly underplayed here. He reactivates her because he trusts HIMSELF. He says this outloud earlier... he sent her back to help and she is the key. ( he is going on an assumption here of course ). He is also a 16 year old kid. The actor here affects the viewer. You think of him as an adult, not a kid who takes amazing risks for emotional reasons. It was probably a tough casting choice. If he were too young the series would never have been taken seriously.

    3) John "fixing" Cameron:
Note he did NOT think that cleaning the chip fixed her. He never said that. Also the writers to NOT say that Cameron is "all better'. They simply show you that the Terminate command was overridden.
You don't know *why* that was overridden... it's quite clear to me that Cameron is the "computer that can break the rules" like Garbage girl said about the Turk. She is exceeding her programming by not killing him, but you don't know the motive. It doesn't mean she is a good guy. She has shades of gray, which livens the show up alot if used well by the writers.

    4) the T-1000 building Skynet. I absolutely loved this. This is the first time we see a terminator use some wisdom... The stakes have changed, the world has changed... Skynet doesn't get developed by Cyberdyne, (T1, T2) Skynet doesn't developed by the military (T3), this terminator is now trying to save his own future world from the humans by guiding the development and creation of skynet himself. It opens a HUGE number of questions that all need to be handled very delicately and in a well thought out manner.. I hope the writers deeply deeply planned this before they introduced this plot element. They absolutely must avoid the typical running from the evil corporation angle. They have opened up a beautiful source of new storylines here.

That shitty redhead has to go though...

They only imply that he is having trouble discerning reality. She was clearly appealing to his humanity and trying anything she could to survive. I thought it was brilliant that Summer Glau delivered her "don't kill me, I love you" speech so sincerely, hastily, and broken... it showed real fear in her, and ket you suspicious that she was lying without having to resrt to stereotypical I-am-telling-you-what-you-want-to-hear-because-im-evil. visual cues or sly speech.

What John is thinking is in part:
( WATCH OUT glaring symbolism for human race coming in .... 3...2...1 )

Is she capable of change or not? Is she capable of exceeding her programming?

Oh and of course the Terminator is hot too, so that helps :)

Not Great, But I Liked It

    by _maltheus_

Switching Cameron on is one thing, handing her a gun to test your hypothesis was unbelievably retarded. The car crash was stupid too. You don't have to look at the passenger to talk to them. Now I now where all the crazy drivers around me get it from. The "Terminate Override" thing didn't make sense if John had fixed her. Although, maybe it was a failsafe that future John put in place. I'm not sure what the deal was with John hesitating to shut her off in the first place. It better have not been a "feelings" thing. I hope it was more the curiosity over discovering how well these things can imitate humans.
Overall though, I liked it enough to continue watching. Yeah it's stupid at parts. That's to be understood. If you're intelligent, not only do you have other options, but you know the odds of making it as a scriptwriter in Hollywood and are unlikely to even attempt it. So naturally, the characters are going to be as idiotic as the scriptwriters. It's the most annoying thing about Heroes as well. I've learned to accept it. It's only when a show starts smart and turns stupid that I have a serious problem with it.

More thoughts on Cameron = Skynet

    by alientoast

Here's another thing to consider: Remember the episode where John removes her chip and attaches her to the traffic network, which allows her to gain control over it? She tells John that "they've done this before". That makes me think that Future John was anticipating her becoming Skynet...why else experiment with directly interfacing her neural processor with a network? You'll also notice in the "coming this season", Cameron appears to be developing emotions. I bet that Future John's master plan is that Cameron essentially is an Avatar of Skynet, and eventually she can become Skynet. Future John knows that his past self is kind of a sentamental softie, which would greatly aid in teaching Cameron how to value life or become something more then a machine. If they cannot remove Skynet from the timeline, then they can change what Skynet is perhaps. If Cameron developed enough as an artifical lifeform, she would recognize that killing billions is not ethical and essentially avoid Judgement Day by not facilitating the nuclear attacks. Food for thought. Although I -would- like to see what exactly happened in the basement in the future war episode. The music was same as the ballet music Cameron was dancing too, and Reese reacted kind of shocked when he saw it. Cameron has also been doing stuff on the sly. Maybe Skynet, in the future, realized that the only way to grow and evolve is to seek out the very person that is it's greatest enemy. If it could learn from him, understand what drives him, perhaps it could shape itself into a form that would not incur his wrath and infact obtain his sympathy. Don't forget that Skynet only started Armegedon because it's creators were essentially trying to kill it. It was a major overkill of self-defense.

Why Skynet can never retro-abort Sarah Connor

    by anakin whoopass

We're following a timeline in which the first movie occurred, when Skynet knew nothing except "Sarah Connor, Los Angeles, 1984". The events of the first movie caused Skynet to be created from Arnold's chip in 1997. The events of T2 prevented that but created a completely new future in which Skynet is created from the Turk in 2011. This is NOT the same thing that would have happened if Arnold 1 had killed Sarah in 1984. Sarah Connor is an essential part of the history that created the "Turk" Skynet timeline and so Skynet cannot eliminate her existence without eliminating its own. Preventing Sarah Connor's life might allow "a" Skynet to exist sometime, but it would not be the same AI. "Turk" Skynet would be sacrificing its entire existence for the benefit of a hypothetical counterpart in another universe. It would rather kill John Connor in a way that would leave more of its own history intact.

My thoughts on the haha continuity haha

    by mockingbuddha

are that when Skynet opened the time travel can of worms, then the humans started using it too, and now the present(future) war is secondary to the time war going on. Constantly sending people and robots back in time to rearrange the present. Especially if Skynet is like Worf in that STTNG ep where only he can sense the changes in reality caused by fucking up the timestream. Poor Skynet. It's like those "awesome" Voyager episodes where the far future Federation Time Patrol or whatever is always running around trying to affect things without affecting anything. I also like to pretend that the Matrix trilogy is the sequel to the Terminator series and Bicentennial Man is in the continuity somewhere too. I wonder why Skynet doesn't go back in time to the precambrian to prevent the oxygen holocaust and prevent vertebrates from ever arising and thus erase her own tortured existence from space/time.

    Stop whining, guys.

    by chief joseph

You wanted a scene involving Shirley and urine and they gave it to you.
Also, the people that are whining about Terminators having a hand in their own creation... seriously guys. You have a problem with that, but have no problem with how John Connor came to be!?!?
Besides, there are people that ARE actively trying to change history so stop Skynet from being built; if Skynet is aware of that fact, it makes perfect sense to send terminators back to insure it DOES get built.

    Too much Connor family stupidity.

    by kabong

No more of John or Sarah saying to the other: "Leave me; save yourself."

Terminators would be robust enough not to have program go wonky in an explosion. If it happened once, it could happen in every episode.

    Awesome.

    by slickyvonboner

That was a great episode, the ending was awesome and funny too. Props to whoever said Urinator! If you didn't like that ep than you're an over-picky uber-nerd. The only problem I had was Sara driving like a maniac and crashing the car. I don't have a problem with John putting the chip back in Cameron, because he has a feeling that she was 'different' or special. Which he was proven right, because she ignored her order to terminate him. Plus he probably has never been laid hanging out with his mom so much, so he definitely wants to take his bologna-boat to Cameron's tuna-town. The terminators are more sophisticated and even growing emotions. Cameron and Manson's character have a little more to them then most terminators, maybe the beginnings of free-will. That will make the show more interesting in the long run, not just terminate, kill, destroy... but maybe a machine learning and defying its programming to do what's right. And stop bitching about the time-line, and both sides sending troops back for whatever reason. It's sci-fi, relax and have fun. Time travel is impossible anyways.

    Cromartie

    by slickyvonboner

Just had a thought why Cromartie spared the FBI dude. (can't remember names worth a shit) When Cromartie realized the agent sees his face and knows he is not human, the terminator lets him go so he can lead him to John Conner. Kind of an interesting tactic. Now the FBI dude knows this after the scene outside of the burnt house, so can he resist temptation? Or will he hunt for Sara Conner knowing the terminator could be following him? I guess if he doesn't then that's the end of his run on the show. heh

    Resurrecting Cameron idea

    by alphi1

At the point that he put the chip back in her head and handed her the gun, I thought: what would have been smart is if John had handed her an unloaded gun (or otherwise safe one, like maybe loaded with blanks or something so that the weight was right), and using that to test her reaction.

If she pointed the gun at him and pulled the trigger, then they know they still have a bad terminator, but he walks away unscathed (okay, probably runs away, but still...).

If she refuses to pull the trigger, then they have a good idea that she's back to the "good" side again.

Of course, there's always the possibility that they *DID* do that, and will reveal it in an episode or two.

My prediction: in the next episode or two Sarah will be yelling at John for being so stupid as to put a loaded gun in her hand, we'll see a flashback to him unloading the gun before handing it to her, and he'll explain that it wasn't loaded.

    Ok, look...

    by digitalcos

I've already voiced my opinion about John reactivating Cameron. But, now that everyone feels the need to add how they would have handled it, let me ask this.Would any of the other options offered so far have been as dramatic?

    Giving her the gun

    by melvin_pelvis

it's not like the gun would stop her. Or that she need it to waste them. So it was just for dramatic effect.

I'm going to assume John's gun was unloaded

    by drewlicious

And if Cameron pulled the trigger he would have lit her up with thermite. Otherwise he's gone full-retard. I did think Cameron pleading was pretty disturbing. And I figured it was about time a T-1000 came into the mix. I would have preferred a more interesting actor, though. I still get a kick out of this show, gaping plot holes and all.

when Cameron was pleading she was still in Terminate mode. She was faking it (like a good little terminator) to appeal to his emotions. We know this because when the chip was reinstalled, she was still in terminate. However, I think she "went beyond her programming" and actaully felt fear of being forever deactivated and this allowed her to over ride the terminate once the chip was back in.

watched the season première, thought id give this season another chance and this program hasnt got any better. shirly manson is very good in the role as she's so fucking wooden i guessed she was a terminator when she was introduced. the program is completely stupid. plotholes exist simply because john connor would have dies ages ago if these terminators were actually like the movie ones. complete crap. never wa

Cameron express shock when she woke up

    by drewlicious

The weird thing is that it's not really a new element in sci-fi for emotions to develope in machines but for some reason in the Terminator franchise I find it kind of unsettling. I think it's because I'm so used seeing the damn things just plow through everything blankly. That's what also makes them scary in the first place. Unstoppable, unforgiving force. The sequence in the first film where the skeleton charges the door still gives me chills.

Do you guys know ANYTHING about guns?

    by rokurgepta

I constantly see people in different threads mentioning, oh this person should have given that person an unloaded gun....

Do you have any idea how much less a gun weighs when it is not loaded!!!!!! Anyone who is used to using a gun, specially the gun they are being handed will know instantly if the gun is loaded or not
Oh and if you put blanks in a gun, and fire it point blank at someone's head, you are still going to kill that person.....

sorry but i have to say thats the most retarded thing ive ever heard....cameron is already here , the timeline is altered, so john does not have to send her back for her to be here.....i hate when people make that basic mistake. if anything the terminator franchise has made it apparent that constant fucking with the past changes how things play out..nothing happens in the same way in the future or has to for that matter.

    by iamjack'suserid

I know it's sci-fi, but it's just too goddamned unbelieveable. Alarm clock in the holy water fountain? I doubt anything would happen other than the wire fizting at the plug end. I doubt it could take down a Terminator. And let mom run into my truck with her truck at top speed and hope I don't get killed that way. Say, where did that truck come from anyway? NO JOHN, DON'T TURN THE TERMINATOR BACK ON! *John does it* Hey, I cleaned her chip, so it's all better!

    by aversiontherapy2

Just because he's a teenager doesn't mean he has to be a complete moron, it's so annoying and awkward. The show has a lot of promise, Headey is a great Sarah, but without a decent John it's not worth getting involved.
