THE IRON GIANT soundtrack...
Hey folks, Harry Here
And ya know... I'm smiling. The folks over at RHINO RECORDS just sent me an advance tape of THE IRON GIANT soundtrack, and quite frankly... It's cool as hell...
The print of the film I had did not have any of this music, but I can tell you... It looks like ol Brad Bird and them have put together one cool as hell CD worth of music.
First off, the comments on Michael Kamen's score pieces that I've heard. Well... They ain't the greatest music of his career, at least on the two tracks that lay on this tape: YOU CAN BE and WHO YOU CHOOSE TO BE (both 5 minute long tracks) seem to be almost entirely piano based. It's enchanting, but feels as though it should be orchestral (and might very well be temped in on this advance tape).
However, it is the period songs that are on here that have me incredibly excited. What a compilation of cool music.

Folks... This is one helluva group of cool 50's music and I've been writing and working to it all day & night long and I'm real curious as to where and how this music will be used. But I tell ya... Even if these songs are just for the end title music... It'll keep ya in your seat. I was familiar with SEARCHIN and HONEY COMB and COMIN HOME BABY... but the other songs were completely new to my ears and... well, at least for the foreseeable future my stereo's gonna be belting out this music. I just wish I had a CD of it so I didn't have to keep hitting the rewind button.
Can anyone tell me where or when or how much of this music is actually IN the movie? I'd appreciate it. Thanks...

...That they didn't let Rosie O'Donnell sing on this CD because she would sound like a horse making love to a blender!
-
...and I dont think that a piano-based (?) score is necessarily a bad thing, although I know that some people will consider this "cheap".

I wouldn't be surprised if the music isn't his best. I don't think he has a best. He doesn't have a good.

Then listen to his soundtrack for "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" and you'll change your mind--and wet your bed.

Composing for the movies is alot like being a professional actor. Some times the jobs aren't as titillating as they could be but you make the best of it. Kamen's work is always interesting even if most of his assignments aren't "the pick of the litter". I've heard most of the score to Iron Giant and can say with confidence it is something special. Up there with Don Juan Demarco and Baron Munchausen. Let's just hope someone releases a score soundtrack.
