Extraterrestrial Sci-Fi Series THE RETURN In Development At ABC!!

Published at:  Sep 04, 2008 11:33:21 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Writer-producer Rene Echevarria (“Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Now and Again,” “Dark Angel,” “The 4400,” “Medium”) is collaborating with producer Greg Berlanti (“Dawson’s Creek,” “Jack & Bobby,” “Brothers & Sisters”) on an ABC pilot about what happens when a bunch of extraterrestrials turn up on Earth.

Will it be more like “Alien Nation” or “Earth: Final Conflict”? “V” or "The Day The Earth Stood Still"? "Childhood's End" or that ABC series “Invasion” from a couple years ago?

Find all of Variety’s story on the matter here.

The ratings landscape has already changed enough that ABC would love for this new alien thing to get 9m viewers.

After Palin's speech pulled 40m viewers across the Nets, after Obama/Biden are through trouncing the GOP, they'll probably offer Palin a reality show... (over a shot of her field dressing a moose she's just shot) "she was in line to become vice-president MILF...."

You know what would be cool?

    by stereotypical evil archer

If the aliens actually looked like aliens. Make the show about people reacting and changing their lives to fact that there are aliens on Earth. Please don't have aliens that look like humans. Use the grey alien, or the reptilian, or both. Make a cultural statement! The framework of the show could revolve around the cultural shock; you know, make a relevant post 9/11 story. Now I don't mean to focus on 9/11, but use the cultural relevance of 9/11 with the alien framework; the shock of the announcement. The shock of the reality. Perhaps everything we see of the aliens is portrayed through the media and the real shocker is that one of the shows characters has direct access.Don't make this E.T. Make the aliens feel alien (the word, not the movie). This means when aliens do or say things (if they can say things) make it freaking weird and awesome. Show humans dealing with changes in faith and other paradigm shifts that would happen. Here's a chance at something great that has never been done; don't make a show that's been done before. Make it dark, fun, gritty, and mind expanding. Make us tune in EVERY week! Make something ICONIC. Make it so good that even if it gets canceled it will still have its place in TV history.Whoever is making this should hire me, we can brainstorm this idea into a classic and a ground breaker... if you want to challenge yourselves for something amazing.

    by annoyyou

...whatever. This is starting to sound like all the "guy/girl who is an angel of death/reaper/Satan's helper" scenarios that have been wafting around for years. Yeah, yeah, aliens among us, been there, done that. Actually, I think Donald Fagen's "Tomorrow's Girls" has the best untested alien scenario.

Alien Nation due for a remake

    by jccalhoun

I think that with all the talk about illegal aliens, fear of foreign terrorists, and such I think that Alien Nation is ripe for a remake. Maybe not the alien-human cop aspect but the group of aliens trying to live in the USA aspect would be good to explore right now.

    Stereotypical Evil Archer

    by oisin5199

Every heard of a show called Alien Nation? Pretty much everything you described. I'm also reminded me of the cheesy, but cool original Lathe of Heaven (the one with Bruce Davison, not the crappy remake with Lucas Haas), where there's the turtle-looking aliens assimilating into society.

    by powerring

Battlestar Galactica? It seems to be a "Seal of guaranteed suckage" if something is made for sci-fi channel. Seems 9/10 times to be true. I want to like sci-fi, because Star Trek started me in the genre in the 70's. I have little faith that anything made for sci fi will be good. I am open to any and all recommendations for "made for sci-fi" goodness. And I really don't care for stupid shit that proves they didn't even try, like lake placid 2 and killer snake head fish.

    by anakin whoopass

Reboot, not continuation. The world has changed for the worse in ways since the original and the alien's point of view would be fresh.

    by leftfoot

Decades ago there was a respectable, if not great, ABC scifi show: The Invaders. With Roy Thinnes.

For it's time it was good. Sometimes clunky, sometimes involving.

    Humans should Invade Aliens Planet

    by gornpirate

Make the humans of the future the bad guys and aliens the good guys. Tell it from the aliens perspective and make them really alien not people with makeup, bumps on their heads, big black eyes. Our whole history is one group of humans conquering the other. If we ever get space faring technoogy all of the less sophisticated alien civilizations with plenty of natural resources are so fucked.

    "The Invaders......In Color!"

    by rben

Funny left foot should mention that show. I just finished watching the first season of 17 shows and really outside of the pilot episode, the episode with Michael Rennie and the ep with David Vincent's brother, the other eps were somewhat pedestrian. Quinn Martin was totally out of his element doing SF and he knew it, as did the audience since it only lasted two seasons. Had they expanded on the idea as the series went on and not just had it be about one guy trying to "convince a disbeleaving world" i.e. do a V thing and have all people deal with it like Evil Archer suggested, it might have blown more than a few minds. Having a group of well connected politicians working with Vincent in the second season really didn't help much. Plus there needed to be more backstory with the aliens themselves. "dying planet". how is it dying and why our planet? having the aliens look human and wear the same jumpsuits? snore....maybe the 2nd season that's not out yet addresses these issues but i doubt it. Quinn Martin was just doing his best series The Fugitive but instead of his main protaganist being pursued, he was doing the pursuing. (oh, and the music from the old Outer Limits series being used in the pilot....priceless.) Great, remind us of a better series that the ABC clowns prematurely cancelled!

Got to agree with Wyvern ...

    by itchy

why even bother ? It will either suck, and quickly be cancelled or it will be great, ABC will fuck around with it during the first month it airs, and then they'll cancel it because viewers don't watch shows that get no press and which they can't find on the goddamn schedule because they keep getting bumped for very special 3 hour marathon blocks of Dancing with the Douchechills. Fuck ABC. That is all.
