NBC ANNOUNCES GOLDEN GLOBE WINNER AND EMMY NOMINEE ANTHONY EDWARDS TO REPRISE HIS ROLE AS DR. MARK GREENE FOR ONE EPISODE OF ‘ER’ FOR ITS 15TH AND FINAL SEASON
BURBANK – September 4, 2008 -- NBC announced that Golden Globe winner and Emmy® nominee Anthony Edwards will reprise his role as Dr. Mark Greene for one episode of NBC's long running show "ER" (Thursdays, 10-11 p.m. ET/PT). Edwards will return in the episode entitled "Heal Thyself," which was written and directed by executive producer David Zabel, and will air on November 13, 2008.
The installment will feature Dr. Greene in a series of newly shot scenes that will feature other characters from the show's past while also giving insight into Dr. Banfield's (Angela Bassett) past and her experiences within the walls of County General.
"We had hoped to bring back some of "ER's" stars for the final season and think that our loyal fans will enjoy seeing some of the shows most beloved and memorable characters," said executive producer John Wells.
Edwards first appeared in the "ER" pilot and after nearly eight memorable seasons, completed his run in a highly rated episode at the end of the 2001-02 television season.
Edwards has received four Emmy® nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He also won three Screen Actor's Guild Awards (Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series in 1996, Best Ensemble Cast in 1998 and 1999), the Golden Globe Award in 1998 for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Drama and a People's Choice Award in 1995 for Favorite Male Performer in a New Television Series.
Edwards can next be seen in the feature film "Motherhood" with Uma Thurman. He was most recently in the film "Zodiac," directed by David Fincher. Other recent credits include "Thunderbirds" for Universal, "Northfork" written by the Polish brothers and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," which he executive produced in association with his production company Aviator Films. The company also produced the NBC television movie, "Borderline," that starred "ER" alumna Sherry Stringfield.
Edwards has appeared in more than 20 features, including his memorable turn as "Goose" in the blockbuster feature "Top Gun." His other feature credits include; "Playing by Heart," "The Client," "Miracle Mile," "Mr. North," "Hawks," "The Sure Thing," "Gotcha," "Revenge of the Nerds," "Heart Like a Wheel," and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."
Edwards made his film directorial debut with "Charley's Ghost Story," a modern-day Mark Twain adaptation starring Cheech Marin and Linda Fiorentino.
NBC renewed "ER" for a 15th and final season in April. Combining the extraordinary talents of multiple award-winning producer John Wells ("The West Wing" "Third Watch"), best-selling author Michael Crichton ("Jurassic Park") and the creative team at Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television, the venerated series "ER" explores the inner workings of an urban teaching hospital and the critical issues faced by the dedicated physicians and staff of its overburdened emergency room. Currently beginning its 15th season, the highly acclaimed drama series now holds the distinction of being recognized as the most Emmy®-nominated series in the history of television with 122 nominations. Crichton, Wells and Zabel serve as executive producers, along with Christopher Chulack, Joe Sachs and Janine Sherman Barrois.
A winner of the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award, the series has also earned 22 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series in 1996, among many accolades. In addition, the cast has been honored with four Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series.
The long-running series stars Maura Tierney ("Diggers," "Welcome to Mooseport,"), Mekhi Phifer ("Dawn of the Dead," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "8 Mile," "Slow Burn"), Parminder Nagra ("Ella Enchanted," "Bend It Like Beckham"), Linda Cardellini ("Brokeback Mountain, "Scooby-Doo" films, "Grandma's Boy," "Freaks and Geeks"), Scott Grimes ("Band of Brothers," "American Dad," "Party of Five," "Mystery, Alaska"), John Stamos ("A Raisin in the Sun," "Jake in Progress"), David Lyons ("Blue Heelers") and Angela Bassett ("Akeelah and the Bee," "What's Love Got To Do With It").
On staff at County General Hospital are Abby Lockhart (Tierney), a recovering alcoholic trying her best to juggle a demanding residency and motherhood while everything around her seems to be falling apart; Dr. Greg Pratt (Phifer), an attending fighting for the chief spot on the floor as well as for a firm grasp on his love life; Neela Rasgotra (Nagra), a skilled surgical resident committed to growing in her craft as well as in her place on the surgical team; Sam Taggart (Cardellini), a spirited ER nurse who is finally getting some time to explore life and love both in and outside the hospital; Dr. Archie Morris (Grimes), the quirky-yet-talented attending dedicated to his work but constantly distracted by his own world; Tony Gates (Stamos), a paramedic-turned-doctor who has overcome numerous obstacles to take on the rigorous challenges of life in the ER, Dr. Simon Brenner (Lyons) the newest attending physician with a penchant for stirring things up and Dr. Cate Banfield (Bassett) as a tough-as-nails attending physician whose arrival shakes up the ER.
"ER" is a production of Constant c Productions and Amblin Television in association with Warner Bros. Television.

on You Tube anywhere?
-
...he'll be a zombie?
-
They find a cure for death! Mark Greene returns from the grave to wreak his vengeance.
-
Do we really need to know everything that everyone has ever done? And yet, in the entire press release, I don't remember seeing anything about his character being dead.
-
the original cast from those first few seasons comes back and murders the newer guys...ratings gold.
-
Bad times.
-
This is going to be a great last season. I've watch ER loyally since the beginning. It's quality has not dimished in all these years.
-
ER should have Seth Rogen guest star as a hipster pot-smoking plastic surgeon doctor from California.
-
yup.
-
This is good, though. ER deserves a decent send-off in its final season. I wouldn't be surprised if they even managed to wrangle a cameo from Clooney like they did when Hathaway left the show.
-
but happy Lucy, not laying on the floor of the examination room bleeding to death Lucy...
-
C'mon, we all know he died when he fell off the building. He's not in Arkham. Get over it.
-
...and explain that his advanced Parkinson's as well as several dozen mini-strokes are responsible for his erratic facial ticks and head bobbing.
-
Jesus, that was the most depressing series finale I've ever seen.
-
Fuck him. They should bring back Lucy, the Life Goes on girl who got stabbed to death. That episode was fucking great.
-
Have Clooney's character with Julianna Margulies' character drive through Chicago and get in a car crash or something. Otherwise I gave up on doctor shows a long time ago. There's only so many depressing episodes I can watch.
-
The two episodes where he died (the first being where his death is announced to the staff, the second where we flash back and watch him slowly fade away in Hawaii) are probably the best couple of hours of TV I ever watched.
-
And he said to her something like "I love you" and she gave him the Han Solo comeback "I know."
This was like a decade or longer ago. -
The doctors leave the ER after a long day's work, and pass Tommy Westphall sitting on a curb shaking a snowglobe.
-
Imagine if this show did take a ridiculous left turn and his character did return from the dead as a vengeful, flesh-eating zombie? The ratings would go through the roof.
-
(in an ST ELSWHERE style). The first five seasons were machine-tooled TV, and the series deserves a decent send-off. I bet Clooney turns up to say 'hi' along the way, tho Edwards deserves a little better - he was the moral centre of the show (an idea nicked from the longrunning BBC medical drama CASUALTY, all you Charlie Fairhead fans out there) and it was weakened when the original team started moving on, but was hurt hardest by the departure of Edwards.
-
wasnt the final season of ER supposed to be like 5 yrs ago ? i do remember it supposed to be ending years and years and years ago
-
That was Omar Epps shining appearance on the show. All the docs beepers go off and so does the mangled body's, and they realize it's the suicidal doctor. Man this show knows how to off people.
-
and working in Princeton Plainsboro under Dr Gregory House.
-
If William H Macy came back, I'd DEFINITELY watch again. Leave Clooney out of it though. I didn't even like him before he was famous. All I see when he's on screen are his characters from The Facts of Life and Roseanne. I just can't take the guy seriously. It would be like if they gave John Stamos a role on ER. (Insert irony here.)
-
Wasn't there an episode where Howie Mandel's character has some sort of really weird brush with the supernatural like that? They could totally use that sort of storyline to bring back Edwards. Better yet, do it like the great scene from The Simpsons when Bleeding Gums Murphy's ghost is joined by Darth Vader and the voice from CNN. One of the living doctors has a near-death experience and get a visit from Dr. Green, Goose AND Gilbert Lowell!!! Forget gold, it would be RATINGS LATINUM!!!
-
The series will end when Dr. John Carter returns to be the chief in the final episode. And no matter how many times you spell it that way over the years, Herc, there is no "i" in Noah Wyle's name.
-
You wouldn't think they could keep a series running for 15 seasons, especially with so many cast members - many of them fan favorites - leaving over the years.
-
Seriously, who fuckin' cares? ER has been crap since '02
-
because u cant have enough doctor hospital shows these days and clearly cancellation of ER will leave pple hungry for more so i came up with a cool idea; "a hospital full of doctors who are obnoxious, self-centered, guilt-free, whiteshirts, buttfucking pimps, modestly rich dickwads, perverted gynecologists, hiding good medicine for themselves like ancient healers." -but anyway it will mostly focus on the patients who all fuck and die.
-
I thought this thing quietly went off the air years ago.
Why don't you ER people go off and do something worthwhile like but out the rest of the seasons of St. Elsewhere?
And Hill Street Blues.
Christ if you're not going to bother making money off of them at least give them to Hulu/Netflix WatchNow. -
I hope they get lots of the oldies back, and send the show out in fine form as it will be missed.
-
that was a really superfluous press release
-
Then they better drag Paul McCrane's Dr. Romano from the grave. He was the only reason I watched ER after most of the original cast left.
I don't care how they bring him back, just find a way. Do it "A Christmas Carol" style. Have the three sprites of the "Rocket" visit a cast member. Those three sprites could be Sneaking Little Shit Romano, from the early days, Arrogant Prick Romano, after he became Chief of Staff and finally, Out of his Fucking Mind Romano, after he lost his arm(twice) and was demoted to the ER. -
don't know what the fuck they were thinking getting rid of the opening
-
...of E.R. in many, many years. This show has been junk since Clooney left actually, although the decline began during the third season.
-
AND HES ALL NAKED AND BLUE AND ALL ENERGYGUY. FUCK YOU FOX.
-
did die on one episode and he went to Purgatory. Great show. The St Elsewhere ending would make sense if ER did it too. I always thought that was kind of the point they were making at the end of St Elsewhere. That whatever Hospital shows that followed would simply be the same kid imagining more stories on another day, but with different people.
-
I will most likely watch this season just because it is the end.I still remember watching the first episode just because Michael Crichton was apart of it.
-
not that I remember much of anything about it but that is was kinda bloody.
-
It was during the first season; and it was the one in which Kathleen Wilhoite's character (Susan Lewis' sister Chloe) had her kid... I think...
-
if would involve Kellie Martin, Linda Cardellini, Sherry Stringfield, Parminder Nagra and Maria Bello all reminiscing about their time at County participating in the ongoing lesbian-induced orgasm study. High Five !
-
I'd watch that episode. I haven't seen a new ER since a little before I heard they were killing off Romano. Now THAT was a classic asshole.
-
several reasons. They find Giardello's shooter, they think he's going to pull through fine, then bam, he's gone. Gaffney, and Barnfather, who were major league jerks from day one never got theirs. And, was it the series finale or this movie where Bayliss gets arrested? All the things that are supposed to happen, the good guys win, etc. didn't that's why it was great, and sucked at the same time.
-
You must be pretty stupid. Or living under a rock. Probably both.
-
my butt pucker
-
We've got the slow, painful cancer death of Greene. I remember the death of Lucy because I didn't remember them telegraphing it in the media anywhere. I was just like, "Holy shit, they're not gonna be able to revive her." The aforementioned Gant suicide. And then, the death that made me laugh out loud at the ludicrousness of it all: Romano gets a helicopter dropped on him. I still look back at that as my own personal "shark jumping" moment. But I wasn't mad. I just laughed and laughed. Then, Carter's adventures in Africa sealed the deal for me and pretty much ended my interest. But I'd still like to see the old cast return.
-
And Bayliss does get arrested in the movie (he confesses to Pembleton on the rooftoop). It makes it difficult to watch the show in reruns, knowing the fates of the characters (though the whole series was dark, so I guess if I was expecting a happy reunion, I was deluded). The card game at the end was great for so many reasons, though.
-
Clooney is a star today, but with out shows like The Facts Of LIfe, Roseanne, and of course his star making turn on ER, he would not be who he is today... do a Classy One, and return to ER, if only for the final episode, in the last minutes, etc... The would show class, gratitude and respect... I will be interested to see if he is busy those days, with a new hotty or on set...
-
theyre just gonna deny it til he appears...they did it before on julia marguiles last ep
-
...and for flashbacks they need to shoot NEW stuff? Come on...
-
What next, new episodes of Law and Order?
-
Eric La Salle, Director and star of 'Eric La Salle's Crazy As Hell' has to be involved! I used to love that power-punch thing he did in the opening credits of ER. So cool. He shoulda been the next Carl Weathers!
-
it will be kept quiet. This is after all NBC whose marketing department knows only one way to promote a show: "stay tuned for an all-new [fill in show name here], with special guest star [fill in famous actor name here]." I remember a couple of years ago NBC was promoting one episode like crazy declaring "Noah Wyle returns to ER". He WAS in the episode - the last 5 seconds. And he didn't return to the ER, he was still in Africa. After all that build-up all we got was a shot of him in a helicopter at the very end of the episode. I wonder if those who tuned in just to see Carter, and got pissed because he really wasn't in the episode, felt once bitten, twice shy the next week when Wyle was a big part of that episode. If Edwards' return is a flashback, will anyone comment on how different he looks? "Hey Mark, rough night last night? Geez dude, looks like you aged at least 7 years overnight".
-
unlikely. Anthony Edwards is one of those actors who always managed to look older than he was, i doubt it will show much.
