Gus Van Sant's MILK spills its trailer straight on your rainbow!
Hey folks, Harry here. This looks pretty damn incredible. Outside of the Gay community, I don't think that Harvey Milk was as well known as his name so much as the "Mayor of Castro Street" - He's generally credited with being the first openly gay man elected to a significant political office... ever. He fought hard for Gay rights and this film seems to be a pretty damn powerful look at his life and his fight.
The film has an incredible cast with Sean Penn as Harvey Milk and with a supporting cast of Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch, James Franco, Diego Luna and more. And from the look of the following trailer, it looks like this could be one of the best films from Gus Van Sant's career. Let's definitely keep an eye on this one!
Got MILK?
I will be banning Homophobic Bullshit Below - If you're not interested, I'd suggest skipping this talk back. This is your warning.

this could be a really good film...

...a long time ago...Film looks quite good and has Oscar written all over it.

and not Robin Williams. But then again he was interested in this years ago, when his acting was more interesting and not a catalog of mannerisms.

First?
-
I is really late on that one.

Transparent Oscar bait that middle America will most likely pass up so they can go see a movie about Jim Carrey saying yes to every script he's offered.

a movie for adults. Been awhile. Looks great to me. I'll be there.

Is it my eyes, or am I seeing double standards?

I guess that ban worked.
how depressing, that it was needed to begin with. -
the spawn of Juno Palin. That's a family affair.
-
...don't you find that just FREAKIN patronizing that this is the one segement of society whose hand you're trying to hold! Trust me I think the gay community can take a couple talkback hits and be ok. COME FREAKIN ON.
-
Did Harvey Milk really change the system, or did the system change through a steady influx of homo-sexual themed movies, tv shows, books, and other media that slowly got Americans more used to the idea, until ultimately the tide could no longer be stopped. I'm not saying Milk worked for nothing, just asking the question of what really changed America, and of course one could ask, have we really changed.
-
Check some of the doc "The Times Of Harvey Milk", and although Penn is a bit older, its a good representation. I too, thought he was going toward the "I Am Sam" route.
-
This is an EXTREMELY fascinating story. And very, very depressing as well. Still, I really would've preferred it if Bryan Singer got his Milk project off the ground first. Gus Van Sant hasn't made a good film since Will Hunting. I'm sure this movie will be viciously attacked for promoting the whole "gay agenda" bullshit, but fuck it, this is a gay story that REALLY deserves to be told on screen.

No, it just makes you an asshole.
"does believing in God and the Bible and disagreeing with everything this film is based on count as Homophobic"
Believing in Jesus and fighting against discrimination aren't exactly mutually exclusive, you stupid piece of shit. -
just asking
-
I love Van Sant and this looks great.
-
Has Hollywood ever produced the heroic true story and hard work of a champion of some cause or issue that isn't part of the liberal agenda? Not trying to give too much support to the crazed rightwing nutters on this site, but I am just asking. I guess some conservatives would say Rambo counts, as shooting down the enemy in a rain of gunfire is a big time issue they support.
-
just sayin
-
about gay prejudice and racial prejudice. Prejudice is prejudice.
-
that's what comes from being on the wrong side of history over and over.what conservative maverick do you think is heroic enough to deserve a biopic?
-
Somewhere around the 1:45 mark. I think he's wearing his "Vote for Pedro" shirt too.
-
You are of the notion that homosexuality is a "life choice"?You have a lot of research to do.
-
... I'd say it's all part of a continuum. If there hadn't been a Harvey Milk working towards mainstreaming of certain ideas, then maybe the entertainment industry wouldn't be as willing to present those images and ideas. Any sense of normalcy or equality today is built on the backs of hundreds of public figures and artists all working towards the same goal for decades. Sure, Milk doesn't deserve all the credit, but he deserves some of it, and stories like this deserve to be told.
-
... if you don't like homosexuals, fine, but leave the Bible out of it. Only an idiot uses that as his justification for why he doesn't like gay people. If you're genuinely Christian, then you love your neighbor. No matter what. And there's nothing you can show me in your rule book that says otherwise.
-
full gay or no way is what I say....unlike "Full Retard""Full Gay" can be made either comic or touching, or both as in "The Birdcage". You want an academy award, go full gay...make em' cry.
-
is usually stories about the disenfrachised, the minority, the little guy, battling the "system" to better their life or circumstances. And in that stuggle is drama.I don't think you'll find a compelling dramatic story about a champion getting a tax cut passed.
-
I could be wrong though. I hope he doesn't blow this oscar opportunity, and plays the role with respect, without stereotyping.
-
Pun, motherfucker. Do you speak it?
-
now the rest of the idiots will look pretty mild by comparison...
-
How is homosexuality a sin when not a single person in the world suffers from two dudes having consensual sex?
-
Maybe he'll go full gay stereotype like a feature length episode of Will and Grace.
-
In the Bay, you love the gays or get out. We got all kinds her in SF...Penn is just over on Sir Francis Drake blvd. in San Anselmo.
-
Yeah quadfather you tell those heathens, here are some more folks we can hate together.
Leviticus 20:27 states, "Men and women among you who act as mediums or psychics must be put to death by stoning." Since all the players were getting paid to play on a Sunday, that technically counts as work. And as we all know, Sunday is a holy day of rest and "anyone who works on that day will die" (Exodus 35:2). Actually, I got to get some laundry done, so maybe we can hate on them later.
"Judge not that ye be not judged." St. Matthew 7:1 suckahs -
... wrong. I didn't attack your faith. I said using that faith to justify hatred is idiotic. Your faith does not tell you homosexuality is wrong. That is not what the Bible says. If you twist the Bible to that end, then THAT is what I am attacking. You wouldn't be alone, but it still wouldn't make you right.
-
...no thanks.
-
I am. Put it this way: Some people think it's a choice and not something you're born with. Ok, well then ask yourself this question. Explain why you prefer the opposite sex? Why such a simple question? Because you can't do it. Just like gay and lesbians can't explain why they're attracted to the same sex.
-
"Good gawd, that's DANNY GLOVER'S DICKBLOOD's music!"
-
And I would say that there are millions of people suffering right now from "two dudes having consensual sex" its called AIDS. It was spread mostly in the homosexual communities in the beginning of the epidemic. Don't take my word for it. Check it out. Do some research.
-
...a new-born baby is like a clean sponge...like an empty hardrive.
Said new-born has no perception of what ANYTHING is thus - sexuality is something that the baby takes on as it grows older.
Everything about a person is psychological. Everything that you are goes back to something that happened to you or was witnessed by you as a child.
At least that's my honest opinion. Let's see how many inappropriately uncalled for slams I get for putting this out there.
I'm pretty sure I'm the only one here with the view of common sense. -
Whether you have a hoo-hoo and a ha-ha, two hoo-hoos, or two ha-ha's...it doesn't matter in the end, all that does is love.
-
You have a predisposition for many things in your genetic code, notably how the excretion and attraction of hormones/pheromones and their effect on your overall development. It's not a learned behavior...that fact comes directly from the man who mapped the Human Genome, whom I've met.
-
you have Banzai and ColWTH on your side...congrats.kinda new to the talkbacks? these are 2 of the nuttiest nutters on the site.and if homosexuality is a choice, then man there are a lot of anti-gay conservative politicians making some bad "choices" in their personal lives, huh?I'm not made angry by people like you that cling to this misguided disgust of homosexuality. because I know that you're the same people who refused to accept evolution, who refused to accept civil rights, equality for women...and you know what happens? eventually, society figures out that a human is a human. and one day we'll look back on you the way we look back on a bigoted jerk who refused to let his kid go to the same school as a black kid.you're on the wrong side of history.
-
Go read up on genetics before you make such stupid statements. Scientists have long since proven that humans have innate behaviors passed through DNA, just like all animals. Sexuality does not happen through observation. It is started by a cascade of horomones that are triggered during adolesence. While I am sure there is a percentage of homosexuals whose homosexuality come because of psychological factors, there are also many homosexuals who were born that way genetically.
-
why their attracted to the people they're atracted to. Sure you can say it's the way a women smells, her legs, breast, hair, etc. But you can't go further than that. Point is, it's the same w/ the gays. They don't know why they're atracted to same sex just like we don't' know why we're attracted to opposite sex. And I happen to believe most of the people who are against it are folks who fear what they don't' understand and it's impossible to understand your own sexuality. So how could you understand some gay persons? Plus, you have plain old homophobes out there who aren't' actually comfortable w/their own sexuality so knocking different people makes them feel more normal than they are w/ things. Bytheway, this is somebody that's from the aka, heartland, Oklahoma saying all this and not somebody from either coasts so if I can have an open mind then why can't other people? Also, I think repressed people are scared that homosexaulism will run rampant w/ acceptance. Another fear simply played up w/ Bible and fantasy reasoning.

... and his openly gay friends.
INT. THE ABBEY - NIGHT
Quadfather and his good friends GAY #1 and GAY #2 sit outside at West Hollywood's finest gay bar. We start mid-conversation.
QUADFATHER: I like you guys, but I just don't like the decisions you've made. I hope we can still be friends.
GAY #1: What decisions, exactly, do you disagree with?
QUADFATHER: ... Well... You know...
GAY #2: Is it the form-fitting clothes? The well-kept eyebrows? What?
QUADFATHER: No, the clothes are great. It's... you know... the whole... sex thing.
GAY #1: Wait a second, you don't like the fact that we have sex with... men?
QUADFATHER: Right.
GAY #2: Why?
QUADFATHER: It's in the Bible.
GAY #2: Really?
QUADFATHER: Yeah. Somewhere in the middle.
GAY #1: But... I've never wanted to have sex with women, just men--
GAY #2: Not me. I used to show the girls in High School a reeellly good time! But, that was just a phase.
GAY #1: So, Quadfather, are you really saying that you have a problem with me having sex with a consenting adult, it that adult happens to be a man?
QUADFATHER: Kinda.
GAY #2: Quaddie, you realize that Gay Marriage is now legal in California, don't you?
QUADFATHER: I know that, but I think we can all agree that there always going to be some laws that people disagree with. You know... like the one that says I can't marry my mother. I mean... that's just stupid. She's my mom. I'm in love with her. If you guys can get married why can't I marry my mom. My dad's been dead for ten years! Sometimes I really wish I was Canadian.
The two gay friend are stunned.
GAY #2: Quad... Are you joking?
QUADFATHER: ... About what?
And we fade out.
-
1) I'd like a response to my last question. 2) No one is attacking you for being a conservative or a Christian. It's just that using a book that preaches "love" in order to condemn a benign act amongst consensual adults (which has absolutely NO IMPACT on heterosexuals) is a bit outdated. If you truly believe that gay people have a choice over who they are attracted to, you are simply wrong. And it's funny that you get so perturbed about these liberal AICN talkbackers attacking YOU when people that share your belief that gayness is a "sin" have been brutally attacking homosexuals for centuries. If you really think that, even today, gay people don't live a life of daily discrimination, you are wrong. And you actually believe that they CHOOSE to be regarded as freaks and outcasts? That if, upon learning they were gay, they didn't ever try to be straight so they could, I don't know, live a normal life free of harassment? Is any of this getting through to you?

I thought this was a film commentary site.

You're bringing up a fictional book for reference? You're competing w/ Banzai for most uninformed person on this site and that is quite an achievement!

I am a Christian and I do hate any one. I try to love every one and while I am do agree with the homosexual lifestyle I try to love and respect each and every person I come into contact with. I have nothing but respect for Harry and every one else who writes on this site.

Can we ban the "religious bullshit" too? Or is this thread never going to be about the above trailer?

for everybody in this country. Well thats total bullshit! Freedom for everybody like them maybe. And another thing: how high and mighty must a person be to know whats best for them and to tell them how they should live? Talk about egotisitical. Why don't you keep your traps shut for once about telling other people how to live and live your own life for one fucking time?

Well I Suppose Van Sant Would Be Happy People Are Talking
by troutmaskreplicant
About the film. I liked how audacious the trailer is. I'm surprised how the Hallelujah music worked, when it really shouldn't have. The dorkyness is cool. Gay guys do dorky like no other men on earth. And it's nice to see Van Sant do nice cinematography with a more "conventional" story. Also there's a difference between being politically incorrect and just an asshole.
-
... have I read the Bible, extensively, but I've also read the rest of the sacred texts of the other major faiths from around the world. I think you can certainly choose to interpret a few select passages from the Bible a certain way, and I repeat... I think that's stone cold idiocy.
And I love how you identify yourself as "conservative" and think that means you're automatically under attack. Wrong again. If you can find any place on this site where I've identified my political affiliation... or my religious one... I'll give you a cookie. But you can't, because I haven't. I don't attack anyone because of their affiliations. But I reserve the right to respond to an idea I find offensive, and using the Bible, a book filled with strong moral instruction, to try to justify hating someone because of who they love... that is a perversion of EVERY part of that book, and not just a deranged interpretation of one small part. -

i really think strong conservatives are just not intelligent people. i know i'm just agreeing with 90% of the hollywood liberal media..but man.. everytime someone like quadfather or goons like him speak, a constant stream of dumb shit comes out of their mouths. i cant even begin to have a rational argument with them because where would i even start? I couldnt even argue the 'homosexuality is a choice' point they make because then i would have to argue religon, politics, family values, freedom, etc.etc.. Really, if i believe we're that polar opposites i guess i should just agree to disagree...but fuck, are hardcore conservative and bible thumpers hypocritical and stupid... i mean. fuck. these are the same poeple that are lying to themselves still and think george bush did a fine job, and they're just as well off as they were 8 years ago. GOD, im just getting pissed off thinking about it! i think i should be banned because i dont want to gay bash, i want to conservative bash, and i know thats hypocritical, but..FUCK.

why do none of us recognise your username. Either youve just registered to post or you haven't much posted until now. I applaud him. Those who use the Bible to back hateful ways are interpreting it that way to justify their fear. Those who attack the Bible for being a book that justifies extreme religious affiliation are equally wrong.

Granted, it's the most read book in the history of man, but it is still just a book. I think if you read the Dark Tower series and thought that Roland was real, you have that right, but that doesn't make it so. The bible is the same scenario. It's okay to believe whats between the covers of that book, but it doesn't make it any more real. Religion has no place in dictating the rules of love. I am straight, have no problem with gays, and think it's okay as long as they keep me out of it.
-

why nobody can explain why their straight. I couldn't have given them a simple enough question to ponder and of course they ignore it b/c they can't answer it. Just like close-minded fucks that make this planet devolve. If other people didn't' see it here it is: "I"m straight but I can't explain why I am the way I am. Put it this way: Some people think it's a choice and not something you're born with. Ok, well then ask yourself this question. Explain why you prefer the opposite sex? Why such a simple question? Because you can't do it. Just like gay and lesbians can't explain why they're attracted to the same sex.... Sure you can say it's the way a women smells, her legs, breast, hair, etc. But you can't go further than that. Point is, it's the same w/ the gays. Don't care who you bang, just keep it to yourself.

Can all you Christian/Conservative/Straight/Moral Guardians just give it a rest? Wow Quadfather, such martyrdom for the cause, but at least you bravely got your message out there, "I don't agree with gays but I tolerate them." Such nobility. I'm sure your gay friends are so grateful for patience with them.
I say Harry should open up this talkback and allow more mindless, predictable bullshit to be written, just so the rest of us can have something to laugh at.
That is, if the sheer ignorance on display already hasn't got most of us shaking our heads in disbelief. "Gay is a choice" "AIDS is the gay plague" Why don't we pick up our pitchforks and torches and chase all the homosexuals to an island somewhere and then nuke the fuckin' thing?
Reminds me of an old Bobcat Goldthwaite joke about homomphobia - (While punching an imaginary gay) "I hate you, I hate you...but I'm kind of attracted to you and that's confusing... So I hate you."
This is pathetic, join the 21st century you stupid fucks. -
See it all comes down to how you decide something is true, and there are basically two competing ideologies on this in America today, and they're the same two ideologies that have been around since the Enlightenment.
You either decide based on personal feeling and experience (what you've seen, what you've heard, what you "feel" to be true), or you go by repeatable, verifiable observation of the physical world. And you have to pick one or the other, because one day your reason is going to come into conflict with what you "feel" to be true, and you're going to have to decide which is more valid.
This is also why arguments like the one shaping up in this thread are ultimately futile. You're never going to be able to "reason" someone into accepting homosexuality because all you're going to get back is, "it goes against my beliefs," or "I just think it's wrong." Similarly, the other side is never going to be able to convince anyone else that homosexuality is wrong, because there's not one shred of actual physical evidence that homosexuality is bad for gay people or for society at large.
Hermeneutics. Look it up. -
I thought if "gay" had changed meaning - for example if you say a movie was gay it means you thought it was shit
-
Actually that would be fine if homophobia didn't exist. That's the whole reason for those gay pride parades (which in fairness, are shockingly lame). Sometimes the only worse thing than persecuting a minority is ignoring them.
-
Men used the Bible to justify why they are superior to women. Just saying.

if we nuke homosexuals the russians might misunderstand

-
... actually, interpretation is important regarding that oft-abused quote. "Abomination" in that case simply meant "against kosher law" if you go by a literal translation of the original text. That comes from a long list of kosher laws at the time, many of which have been long-abandoned. If you're willing to live by every single item on that same list, you can quote that passage at me. Until then, you treat religion like a buffet to justify your own personal bias, and that disturbs me.
-
... looks awesome. Van Sant's been on a roll lately, and PARANOID PARK made my runners-up list last year. I thought it was a gorgeous slice of experiential cinema, and I'm glad he's the one who made it to the finish line with this project after all the years of dueling Milk films in development. Looks like the cast is going to rock, and the recreation of time and place looks excellent. Can't wait.

I know you're trying to defend the Bible, but you're just making it seem like it's contradictory.

... oh, for god's sake, dude... you have got to fucking drop it already. We CANNOT POSSIBLY read every talkback. We police the ones we notice a problem in, or the ones that someone alerts us to. End of story. But man, if it makes you this crazy obsessive unhappy that all you do all day is post "WHY DO YOU DO THIS?" in every single talkback, take a break from it. I can't take it anymore, man. We have NEVER given a blanket pass to homophobia or bigotry or any kid of abusiveness. Does that mean you can find some here in the talkbacks sometimes? Sure. Because there are homophobic and racist and bigoted talkbackers, and we don't catch them all. And, I'm sorry, man, but we don't owe you an explanation of every moderation decision. You don't HAVE to post here if you don't like that, but your routine demanding an explanation for everything ever is getting old. Quick. Please... either just get back to talkbacking or accept that maybe this is not the forum for you... because you are never going to the 100% consistency you desire in a system set up the way Harry set this one up. EVER.

i back mori on that... mainly cause the white text on black background looks all sorts of COOL and it is a much more intimidating visual.... i got your back on this one mori... i'm like Rambo... i guess that would make you the blond chick...

Wow... I can't remember the last time I saw Sean Penn in somethi

And didn't immediately think "Oh, it's Sean Penn". This looks quite interesting.

reminds me of what dad used to say after the millionth 'are we there yet? are we? when will we get there. how bout now, dad, are we there yet?'
-
I have never heard that passage explained the way you did, and it makes perfect sense. Sorry, people. However, I WAS NOT trying to say that homosexuality is wrong; I just thought it said so in the Bible. But I was proven wrong No hard feelings, I hope.
Movie looks awesome, by the way! -

Speaking up fairies, I just saw Lindsey Graham at the RNC....

MCain's main "man", who never has been seen with a girl yet votes against gay rights and was obsessed wth Bill's cock, likes to leaf through Victoria Secrets. I'm sure Mickey Kaus is ready to show photos if he doesn't get tough on immigration.

Has potential. Gus Van Sant does interesting stuff from time to time. If this is just a well cut trailer or if this is a truly a sneak peak at a good film.
-
It would have been something to show his little guests at sleepovers.
-
I'll definitely go and see it...hope it lives up to the trailer...very excellent...

God hates religion, and he didn't write the fucking bible. O.k., maybe he wrote parts of it, but then his "people" decided there was some shit goin on that they didn't like. And what better way to persuade people to hate something than to say that god himself hates it. Meanwhile, God's floatin around like an angry Pharret sayin "Hey you dick's!! I didn't fuckin say that!! Don't pass those off as my words!!"
People ruin everything. -
sucked so much ass. i though gus van was being an idiot when he had those 2 kids kiss in the shower the day before the massacre. this man is not deep. get over it.
-
..but My Own Private Idaho was great. Probably one of my favorite adaptations of Shakespears work I've seen next to Titus.
-
I'll watch this

No way, I'm so shocked. Hey Penn, go back to the days when you were cool and made movies people actually want to see.

... atheist "bullshit" if it were a movie about a religious figure, particularly if it were about one in Christianity? If not, kindly explain why that would be a different type of situation - besides the evasive, standby argument that this is your site and you can ban whomever and whatever you wish. The answer should at least have some roots in logic. I believe that the interesting thing about the use of the word "homophobic" is that it implies that anyone that has a problem with homosexuals is, by definition, afraid of them. Exactly what do you think "homophobes" are afraid that any and all homosexuals can and might well do to them? That was worded such because the word "homophobic" would have to describe a fear encompassing ALL gays, not just certain ones in certain situations, etc. In any case, it might interest you to know that, based on the teachings of Christ, to overtly and harshly judge homosexuals as sinners is a sin in and of itself because only God has the right - a tidbit I thought I'd throw out there since Christians seem disproportionately (though probably not inaccurately) burdened with the somewhat inaccurate labels "homophobe" and "homophobic." As for me, I'm "straight," but I don't consider myself a "homophobe." I don't fear gays. However, I do wonder what would be said if I or any other straight person organized a straight pride parade - you know, as a companion piece to the gay pride parade. Or, are we only supposed to have public pride in our sexuality in the form of a parade if we're gay? And, please, if you answer, don't evade the question with a lot of mumbo-jumbo about what the parade is supposed to represent in terms of rights and struggles and all that, well... all that bullshit. I would have a problem with that - to each their own, but a parade just because a group of people have a particular sexual preference? What part of that doesn't go against the preferred idea that gays are "equal" to straight people if one group can have a parade and the other might be frowned upon if it tried something similar? And, yes, I do know that Harvey Milk was killed - or, some might say, "assassinated" - by his political opponent, no less, if I'm not mistaken. And, just to be on the safe side, in responding, please don't turn my words around to say that I'm mistaken unless you can back it up by enlightening all of us as to the FACTS about which I am mistaken. Much oblige. :)

I'll be glad when this election is over and all us regular folk and go back to being normal instead of Libs and Conservs.

Alot of Homophobia out there. Still. It is 2008 and and you would be surprised how much HATE is out there.
But this film looks incredible, looks like an incredible piece of Cinema. Josh Brolin is blowing up, and Sean Penn is an amazing actor.
This has Oscar potential for sure. -
i'm gay and i post here. i've waited a long, long time for this movie to be made. i know it's not a well-known story outside of the gay community, but it's powerful, heartbreaking, historically important, and it needs to be told. i can't wait to see it -- it looks fantastic.
-
NOT ONLY IS THE BIBLE THE BIGGEST SELLING BOOK EVER, BUT IT'S ALSO THE BIGGEST SELLING FORM OF FICTION.
THIS MOVIE LOOKS LIKE A GOOD MOVIE. . .A GOOD MOVIE THAT HAPPENS TO BE THE STORY OF A GAY PERSON. THAT WON'T STOP ME FROM NOT SEEING IT.
GROW UP! -
So let me get this straight, if I flat out admit I disagree with homosexuality I will be banned. Because I kinda do. I do not HATE homos, in fact I know quite a few that I am friendly with who know exactly how I feel about them and they just kind of laugh it off. I will still hang out with them bcause they are entertaining and overall good people. I just do not agree with thier side activites. Also, what if I do not feel that I am ready for a black president Which I am not, does that mean I should be banned from a movie site? I do not think so. People should be allowed to express their opinions and if people do not like it, well tough shit. It is 2008 and people are sensitive pussies and we have to accept that. I have not hatred towards black people, but to be honest I am not friends with any really either. Does that make me a bad person? I just don't really know alot of black people. And the few I do know work in my building in different departments so I have no real contact with them. Sorry for the rant, but I just feel people are entitled to opinions whether AICN agree or not. And the bannings are getting out of control lately. Just to clarify, I do not consider myself racist, or sexist really. Sure I do not agree certain behaviors, but I also disagree with all the women who went to see Sex and the City. Sorry for the rant, but I am drunk!
-
I'm originally from the Bay Area and though this tragedy was before my time it's a very important part of local history to me -- not just for gay rights but for civil rights. Honestly I'm not a big fan of GVS's visual storytelling in the past so I was a hesitant about this movie but I'm definitely hooked now.

Weird that Harry feels the need to issue warning...
by whinynegativebitch
...On homophonic bullshit. One, its okay to spread all other kinds of bullshit, just not homophobic stuff? And two, I can't imagine AICN being a hotbead of homophobia anyway. Geeks being predominantly asexual unless Buffy is involved. That said, Van Sant is on a mega fucking role, and this flick looks great. Although, I've read a book on Milk, or more rightly his killer and I've seen a TV movie on the subject too, so its kind of old ground. Also, focusing on it being a gay issue movie always made me feel bad for the Mayor, who everyone tends to just forget about. Plus...Gay issue movies seem somewhat redundant in this day and age...I mean, Brokeback was focusing on being gay in a place where even today its frowned upon. But San Francisco? But then again I live in Sydney, the gayest city on the planet, so homophobia seems rather quaint and strange to me. I hope the film covers the riots a little bit. Kind of cinematic.
-
...Will be an interesting character to cover. The trailer seems to imply that the murder was related to his homophobia, when it clearly had alot more to do with the usual work place office shooter mentallity. Or twinkies. I hope they don't try and bend the story that way, it actually makes it less interesting and makes it a bit more of a generic issue movie.
-
In one corner we have 3 crappy kids comic book movies, one in particular is in the book as a classic missfire. The other side has one of Americans greatest directors whose last FIVE films have been absolutely amazing. Yeah, definately go with singer. Who'd literally cast gay so that he could include his latest toy boys. MILK, starring ex football player turned celebrity homosexual Ian Roberts.
-
...I think being homosexual is largely a choice. Like fucking blondes instead of brunettes. Biologically we are put forth to impregnate chicks. Thats the rules. Thats how it works. But its kind of a moot point, because who really cares? You wanna suck dick? Go for it. I tried it a few times, while not unpleasant, I still prefer women. But I honestly don't see the big deal is with it. Especially if you don't partake in it. If your not getting a penis in the ass, why bother someone else who enjoys it?

The deriding of 'Homosexuality' is UNFOUNDED throughout history.
by halberd
The problem here is that if you backtrack it enough, religion's flaws through it's human control since the very beginning have permeated insofar as coexisting with science in the 21st century that people in institutions of power continue to bear heavy religious values that influence world affairs and, specifically, American ideals. It's the same thing with slavery - you do something long enough and it's going to STICK - i could only imagine the burden to carry on my shoulders if I were an African American, no matter how "free" and "open-minded" America wants to be. And the problem is worsened because even the non-religious have an inherent dislike or cringing towards male on male action [not so much female on female... obvious double standard especially if the two are hot]. So even if you hate religion, you can still 'hate' homosexuals. It's incredibly ill-justified. Just think about this statement - "being gay is wrong." Oh yea, well if you ask the question "Why?", you'll be greeted by a thousand and one falsehoods and statements that beat around the bush. There is no evidence or credibility in declaring something like that. That's about as groundbreaking as "trees are terrorists". Thankfully we are in a much less religiously-driven world where science is moving in and with great force. Not to discredit religion... it has many values, and does not contradict most if not all scientific theory... creationists/radical Christians are the people to worry about. But beyond all this, the greatest question is "why is homosexuality wrong and who said so?" The answer by most is "because it is and God said so." Let me tell you... God would probably not say that, nor write it. "Thou shall not lay with a man as if he were a woman" [paraphrased from the Bible] doesn't fly either, because I will go back to the fact that [although it is said to be divine intervention to perhaps yet again help cover some tracks], these are stories still penned by mortal fingers, not God. I have seen and heard of animals performing same-sex intercourse/rituals, what have you. Last I checked, we're still listed in the animal kingdom [specifically the order of Primate], and moreover, I would believe God would love ALL of His creations, flora and fauna alike. Man has truly fucked up God's vision. - GS

...A working class uncomfortableness with homosexuality. At least it did for awhile. But I'm paying to see him act, which he does very fuckning well. Besides, hes a rapist and wife beater. I'd probably put that ahead of his Bukowski like distrust of "queers" when it comes to character referencing. By the way for the guy asking...I guess I like fucking chicks because of the testosterone flowing through my system. It wants me to fuck women and spread my seed. But I tricked the bastard. I learnt about birth control and appreciating a womans anus. Anyone using the fucking bible as a guide book can suck my dick too. Seriously, you want to make law or discuss social organisation, you reason and facts. Not some fucking nonsense some dirty bearded pyjama gown wearing backwards savages made up thousands of years ago to keep their in order. You want to live by their particular form of council regulations, maybe you should think about abadoning other modern advancements like the interweb. Go back to scrawlin on tablets.
-
jorson28 - When people are being beaten and murdered for being straight, when straight people are denied the right to marry, when straight people are at risk of losing their jobs or their public standing because of their sexuality, then you can have a "straight pride" parade, and I'll even help you blow up the balloons.
Badass_Harry_Callahan - Say what you mean. You "disagree" with homosexuality? It's not like it's an argument or a debate. There's nothing to agree or disagree with. There are gay people in the world and you either think they're human beings who deserve the same rights as everyone else or you don't. You're not racist, but you don't think you're "ready" for a black president? WTF does that even mean? To me it sounds like a nice way of saying, "I'm more comfortable with black people when they stick to rapping and playing football."
And thank you to the mods for cracking down on some of the more hateful elements that lurk around here. This is not the public square, and everyone is not entitled to voice their opinion. Harry, Mori, et al are under no obligation to allow douchebags to spread their misbegotten, hateful ideologies all over my computer screen. -

Um...What beat Brokeback? I don't remember at all...
by whinynegativebitch
...I do remember thinking Brokeback was amazing. For the exact opposite reason you stated Octagon. I went in expecting some lecture about homosexual tolerance, and instead got an incredibly movie country and western themed love story. Real classic melodrama. As for your reading of first time homo-sex, I've known a few guys who've jumped right into anal, and I know a damn sight more straight guys who indeed just get straight into forcing their penis' into girls during the loss of virginity. The making out in public? Well that would go for any story centering on deception in a marriage. It also plays in real life, where you see people doing things so stupid you have to shake your head in disbelief. And it also goes without saying that wives have caught husbands in the act of doing far worse than making out with some dude before. On the topic of gay pride parades...Well, we have the biggest in the world here once a year. It gets the same criticims as you usually see slung towards it, and nowdays alot of them seem warranted. BUT it did originate in a time when homosexual activity was being openly and violent persecuted. Its sort of become ingrained in our culture now. It does't really represent what it originall stood for, but its still a kick ass party and its one of the few nights of the year where you know you can be as out and as proud as you want to be and not a single person is going to open their mouth and criticize you for it. I mean, do you want everyone to stop celebrating july 4th, I mean, you fucking don't pay british taxes anymore, so what the hell are you letting off fireworks for?

because of them being a charade. Then he finally won his golden men with Schindler's (after Close Encounters, Raiders and E.T. 'fell through'). Then some of that hate left his system. Then he won another golden man Saving Private Ryan. But it was bittersweet, because of Shakespearean interference. Some repressed hate then perhaps resurfaced. And then, oh would you look at that... I didn't even think this would lead in so perfectly... but The Beard's Munich lost to - CRASH. Man that was a sweet surprise... writing and linking ideas on the fly like that. But IMO, Munich > Crash, any day of the week. Another Oscar fumble for the books. - GS
-
I loved the film. Terence Malick prioritizes the visuals, going so far as utilizing 70mm in some sequences that only enhanced the skill that is his eye for a shot. At the same time there is an appeal of period pieces for me, especially in so visually dealing with the topic of journeying to "the new world" in the west, something not oft touched upon. Of course, the real story was 'Pocahontas'/'Smith' and the love that crossed cultures and people. I throw accuracy under the bus, because quite frankly - I watch movies for entertainment, not a history lesson unless so labeled/intended as such. Beautiful film, really. - GS
-
I love it when something comes out that has the potential to be truly brilliant and important, films like that are why I believe so much in the medium of cinema. And man does this ever look to capture that. i got chills watching it. Sean Penn is truly one of the best actors Hollywood has ever seen. Right now it's him, Daniel Day Lewis, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Meryl Streep atop the best in the business list.
-
You present to me as being thoughtful, perhaps more thoughtful than the average Joe. However, while I do not think quadfather says it correctly, I believe that you do not either. For, first of all, the bible is very clear in its disapproval and yes, even judgement of homosexuality, but not as quadfather makes it seem. Also, it is, in fact, erroneous for somebody to lump moral code into ceremonial code in regards to God. As it says in Collosians 2:16-17, the ceremonial law was "abandoned" as you put it, because the ceremonies were designed to be a shadow of the person of Christ before He came. But Therefore, when the substance of the shadow has come, we no longer need the shadow {cereomonial law} to illustrate, for the substance is here. Study it out and you will find this true, I assure you. Returning though, to addressing the issue of homosexuality and the bible, read those passages in the new testament that condemn homosexuality explicitly (Romans 1:24-32 & 1 Corinthians 6: 9-11} and you will see that the apostle Paul is clearly speaking nothing of ceremonial code but of moral law. This is an important distinction because unlike ceremonial law, the moral law reveals what type of character God has...ie what offends Him and what is contrary to His will,His perfect desire and plan that is based on knowing all. The moral law reflects the nature of the eternal God and therefore is eternal itself. And it is He that says homosexuality goes against nature. This is the argument that Romans in particular makes about homosexuality, that it is unnatural and against God's intended design. It says nothing of mens prejudice making it wrong or ceremony forbidding it. It should also be noted at this point that sin in general{that which is disobediant with God's will}is also abominable in God's sight and deemed worthy to be punished just the same as homosexuality. This includes lieing, stealing, sex before marriage, pride, lust for somebody not your spouse, hating a person, worshipping something different from God, envy , selfish ambition etc. and on and on we go. Thus, I hate lieing as I hate lust. I hate homosexuality as I hate sex before marriage. I hate idolatry as I hate murder. I do not hate those guilty of such things, otherwise I would hate myself and all who have ever existed before me and with me. No, rather I love them as I love myself and thus, warn that the bible declares all men in their nature corrupt due to sin at the fall and therefore naturally warring against nature{the will of God}. Our natures have become backwards in regards to God and need redemption. So then, my position is that the bible is clear that homosexuality is wrong but I do not hate the homosexual, rather I love him and therefore warn him to turn away from his own sinful desires the same way God commands me to turn away from mine. For, Christ gave Himself for our punishment that we might turn from our sin to faith in Him to be delivered from the guilt we have incurred upon ourselves by breaking His laws. Finally, working at a prison has taught me that just because somebody has a desire to do something, it does not mean it is natural in a good sense. What fool believes that desire should dictate morality? By the way Moriarty, you are by far one of my most trustworthy sources for film reviews on this sight and almost anywhere. Keep up the good taste.

...Loved The New World. Didn't really grab me as a love story, although obviously the way smith and pokie communicated was a major part of the film. I thought The New World was just about the best film I saw that year. I was very fucking stoned when I saw it thought. Plus, as hot as that jailbait was, I would rather have Jessica Alba as me learning pillow.

He Woody Woodpecker. I am Sam.

The cinematography was excellent, as was the cast. Looks very promising, opening night in San Francisco will probably be crazy.

This has been an interesting talkback. I have some thoughts to share:
1) The Bible: (sigh) It’s a book supposedly written by God but was actually written by Man, translated again and again throughout history by Man, and has been edited and revised by Man whenever he’s chosen to do so (Old and New Testament, anyone). The Bible cannot be taken as a literal document from God, end of discussion.
2) Religion is a myth, created for two reasons: a) to provide some semblance of guidance for society which, at times way back when, trod the line between civility and chaos; and b) to provide a sense of comfort and understanding about the greatest unanswerable question of all: Is there life after death? We’ve discarded other myths throughout history (Greek, Norse, Egyptian gods) but this particular myth is still stubbornly hanging on. It will fade eventually.
3) I think Harry was right to put a disclaimer on this talkback because this is the sort of movie and topic that will particularly invite bigoted, hateful opinions. As an aside, I wouldn’t want to see too many rules governing what can be said or not aid because aside from a few ignoramuses, there’s some interesting discussions that go on here that I fear would be muted if it got to be too stringent. Also, if you don’t like Harry’s liberal views, then you should be looking elsewhere. If Rush Limbaugh were running this site, most of the talkbacks posted here would never have made it onto the site but that would be his choice to make, as it would be his site. Same accord should be dealt to Harry.
4) Homosexuality is not a choice in most cases. While there are cases of people who because of some trauma that occurred in their lives have made a conscious or unconscious decision to become homosexuals, as a few people have already said, scientists have been able to trace back to a genetic predisposition, which has already been dictated in their genome. It’s science but ultra-religious people have a hard time dealing with science unless it can’t explain something as yet. Then the hardcore religious community will jump all over that as some kind of “proof” that intelligent design was involved.
-
that we all sin, from swearing to eating meat on friday. deal with THAT, Ehh108.

Wow, clever post. Without any form of sarcasm or cynicism that seems to be so prevalent on these talkbacks.
Only thing is, as a gay man I actually find it quite condescending that even with your perceived notion of ‘loving the sinner’ you still manage to lump an innate sexual desire that I have with a heterosexual’s inability to keep their pants zipped before they make a vow (which I can never do, unless I decide to suck it up and start being into vaginas, which I am not).
I'm a 24 year old gay man who is still a virgin. I find it hard to fit in to a sub-culture created by my own 'minority group', I'm completely not interested in promiscuous sex and I believe that I am an upstanding citizen of society.
So if I were to take your morals and values that you take from a religion I am not a part of and have no interest in, I am relegated to a life of celibate isolation (hey, it may be my current situation but I choose this lifestyle for reasons based on personal values, not ones dictated to me by misogynistic men from a time long forgotten).
It seems that no matter where any discussion of homosexuality occurs, religion follows right behind it. I just can’t wrap my head around the concept of religion dictating to me that one of the fundamental things about me (note, not the thing that DEFINES me, but a desire I have been born with, screw those who say it’s a choice) is abhorrent and being so self righteous about it while priests fiddle kids (and the cover ups!), polygamists marry their 12 year olds, etc, etc.
Of course not EVERY religious person does those things (not even the majority), but they are still things that occur under the umbrella of religion, and you guys are still hung up over the gender of the people in a bed behind closed doors?
So what is so ‘wrong’ about homosexuality? Is it the anal sex? Is it that a girl might be licking out another girls vagina? Ok, so this sexual activity might not breed any kids but do we really need to add to the 6 billion already here? There are a MILLIONS of kids out there needing parents and a home and love and care… well I can’t help them either because I’m a homo and might pass on my gay disease to them.
Is it the fact that they just happen to be 2 people of the same gender who are attracted to each other? What makes this so wrong…? It’s not like gays come up to and shove it in your face. If they do you shouldn’t be pissed off at them for being gay, you should be pissed at them for being slutty fuckwits. I see heteros blatantly making out in public, dry humping in clubs, and getting hand jobs in cinemas. Why is worse if they happen to be gay? ANYONE who does that shit is a slutty fuckwit.
I naturally like men. Who are YOU to say that it is unnatural or wrong? Who is anyone?
Anyway, that’s my 2 Australian cents. -
if people are still posting anti-gay rhetoric on this TB, they have wasted far too much time thinking about such a "sinful", "unholy" issue. makes me wonder what their motives actually are.
the progress gay rights have made since even the 90s are monumental, and if you're not on board with the natural evolution and acceptance, then you're the same as grandparents that would drop "N" bombs at the kitchen table.
aka-you're not adapting, and in another decade you'll be a joke.
you don't have to do anything but keep your mouths shut. no one is asking you to march in a parade. no one is asking you to even condone it. just mind your own business. if it doesn't concern you, shut the fuck up.
seriously.
apparently this movie is necessary. for some.
but they won't be the ones that see it.
gus van sant is a great director. sean penn is a great actor. i am lookiing forward to seeing this movie.
also, shia labeouf is a complete douchebag.
-
and he is only a footnote...milk's assasination was a tragedy, but the death of moscone changed sf politics...and not for the better...
-
good points. i try to follow the bible in my life but i don't like the fact that it is anti homosexual. It comes to whether it is an act or a state of being and to me it is a state of being, which i can't see as being wrong. i like the fact that you differentiate between the fact that in any group, some people are just arseholes, and this does not reflect their membership of the group but rather just that they are arseholes
-
it never ceases to amaze me how many of these evangelist anti gay crusaders end up tapping their foot under the door of the stalls at the airport.
-
But science hasn't found a gay gene yet. Learning, role emulation, group dynamics, and even choice may still be the dominant factor in sexuality (which then gets the hormones going), I wouldn't cross your fingers for genes to be found for child molestors, homophobia, foot fetishes, love of apple pie, etc, etc. And not everyone who leans to choice/freewill is a bigot, just so you know. (Although overall in polls believing people are born gay has a strong link with tolerance).
-
bunch of windbags.
-
Is there Transformers in this? Because thats what usually starts rattling the cages. Guys - grow up. Some men have sex with each other and you probably own their CD's. Dont flatter yourselves and think they necssarily want you. Film looks great and judging by the depressing twattishness on here is still relevant. The Bible also has passages about stoning people to death if they are adulterers so dont start that shit.

do you choose to be straight?
do you choose to not be gay?
do you see brad pitt's rippling abs and want to scrub your laundry on them but choose, instead, to marry linda/debbie/brenda/denise/sarah and have 2.5 kids? you've decided that you're NOT going to have gay sex. you've made a concerted effort to get a boner when you see megan fox? ellen degeneres is just really stubborn?
there isnt a gay man/woman alive that has sex with the same gender while thinking "i wish this was a woman/man".
why the fuck would someone choose homosexuality? they desperately need complications?
some people spout off before they have put any thought into what they're saying.
don't be stupid.
also, a remake of poltergeist is unnecessary.

No, Quadfather believing in God and the Bible and disagreeing with everything this film is based on count doesn't count as homophobic... believing in an antiquated and backward notion of a big man in the sky who we will all stand around worshipping for all eternity when we die (and only if we stand around worshipping him while on earth) makes you a fucking moron... and yes I know this is a film-site that has nothing to do with religion but seeing you brought it up in the first place, I thought I'd share some of my views on the matter. Apologies for the "fucking moron" bit... in the heat of the moment that is all I could think of to describe someone who disregards science and commonsense.

1)He has 'God' in his actual name. His actual NAME!
2)He's Jewish. They're in the Bible. I mean, they're everywhere in that thing!
3)His surname is "The Beef". What better way to appeal to the American heartland? (Okay, forget that it's French).
4)He was in a movie with Megan Fox (what red-blooded male wouldn't want to tap that? Bom-chika-wow-wow!), directed by Michael Fucking Bay (THE straightest director in H'wood) and it's about an ordinary boy who gets a cool car, which helps him get the hot girl. You can't get any more hetero than that! -
*waves*
Can't wait to see how swishy Penn makes Milk.. tho I admit I have never even seen footage of Harvey Milk, so never mind, heh. Can I have my Iron Giant sequel now? -
Moriarty, could I get your number? I'm totally in love with you now, man lol (is there a punctuation that works after lol?)
-
You ever heard of the Crusades? This is my "crusade". I am so sick of the hatred spewed forth towards innocent movie stars like Shia on this site. I've had it! I'm going full-throttle on yo asses! I am McG! KING KONG AIN'T GOT NOTHIN ON ME!!!
-
this movie looks great. i'm always scared to enter a van sant film, though. his movies can be a little exhausting.
-
The only van Sant movie Ive actually seen is Elephant, which was really affecting, but the ending where**SPOILARS** the boys go all gay in the shower, left me a little cold, and confused... but i was rly young when i saw it.. mightve misunderstood what was happening. Did they murder other kids cus they were gay? Did the killin' turn them gay for each other? Did the catharsis of a murderous rampage make them realize they wanted to hump like bunnies? Am I making up my own ending in my head?
-
I liked Van Sant's "Drugstore Cowboy" and "My Own Private Idaho". Since then, his stuff has been hit and miss for me, but this looks interesting.
-
Maybe someone else can answer it more fully but maybe it also had to do with them feeling outcast and alienated. Also, in an interview after Columbine, a student said Eric and Dylan went around bragging that they were "bi" to get a reaction out of people.
-
... :(
-
.. And has anyone noticed that lots of Stephen King's books have a scene or two that involves young boys masturbating or doing homoerotic things, like the evil mean bully forcing the weak demure hero to wank him off? I think that was in IT, but there are other examples I could trot out.
-
But people who try to say that there's nothing in the Bible that really says two men having sex with each other is wrong and that it's all just flawed interpretation really are grasping at straws. That whole "abomination is the same word for eating shrimp" argument pretty much falls apart for Christians because there is a bunch of stuff in the new Testament that says that such acts are perversions. Try Romans 1:27. You don't have to believe what's in the Bible. But don't tell Christians that they don't know what they're talking about when you pretty clearly haven't read the book.
-
A brother at my school (as in a religious brother) read out all the anti-gay passages in the Bible for us during religion class. He then moved to another school and molested a young boy there.
-
That should've been King Kong ain't got SHIT on me. SHIT. Oh geez. So much for the impact now. Damn no edit button. I'm serious though...oh forget it.
-
Regarding your comment that science hasn't found a gene for homosexuality yet and may not, I offer this link: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080904.wlgene04/EmailBNStory/lifeFamily/home
And that's just the beginning. -
elephant is the film that got me interested in van sant's movies. my own private idaho is definitely his strongest effort to date imo. i loved good will hunting, but it doesn't really have that gvs feel. i need to catch up on his stuff. still haven't seen paranoid park. i saw all of the death trilogy, and that's kind of where i'm coming from with the exhaustion comment. milk looks like it could actually be a good blend of the van sant aesthetic and a more palpable film for the average viewer.
-
Not to say he is a bad director, I just always thought he was a bit over rated. Though this looks interesting. I have seen the documentary a few times (once at home, and a few times in some of my classes at school.) I always thought this would make a interesting film. I remember thinking if I were to cast the film, I would put Sean Penn, or Adrian Brody as Milk. Josh Brolin as Dan White is a great choice. The only other person I think who could play him is Arron Eckhart. But I think he needs to distance himself from rolls like that for now. He is really talented, and I would hate to see him get type casted.
-
i wasn't thinking about van sant just directing good will hunting. i'm assuming he wrote milk.
-
...Can get off photographing young boys all he wants. Just like Larry Clark, I don't really fault him since half the casts are good looking, and they make quality films. If they start making shit films, then I'll start questioning their motives.
-
I don't understand why some people want to waste their time in a talkback trashing something thy have no intention of seeing. And I have had a life-time of being called names because of my sexuality, so again, thanks. I really look forward to this film.
-
I just think it's funny that it's okay to ruthlessly bash on the Mormons whenever an Ender's Game story breaks, due to its author being a Mormon. What's the difference? Are Mormons somehow less human than gays? Same with every other religion/orientation/race/GENDER that gets bashed and belittled in the talkbacks. Your talkback policy is worthless, only when you want to enforce it. And since the dregs of society frequent these forums, it should be no surprise to anyone that the conversation should follow suit. You can't let the behavior persist for years and then suddenly expect everyone to fall in line, idiots.
-
There are defiantly a lot of Fundamentalist that twist the Bible's message to justify the many reasons it is ok to hate, or persecute different people, groups, est.
Then again, there is also a lot people, who preach harder than a southern Baptist evangelist, about the evils that religion and the Christian faith has brought to this world.
There are plenty of places you can go to state your views, and voice your opinions... But it isn't here. We are here to talk movies, and not get on soap boxes. -
Sorry for the exploitive heading. I got your attention, hopefully. There are undoubtedly some smart motherfuckers on this TB. Harry never should have put that warning up. If bigots want to go to war with no armour, let them. They will show their own prejudice and stupidity. Look deep into your self and your arguments. You are either informed and empathetic or not. And if your not FUCK YOU, YOU CUNT!
-
If the bible is your reason for believing homosexuality is wrong, then I assume you fully agree with the rest of Leviticus: like that when a women menstruates it is because she has recently commited some evil, and that slavery is fine as long as your slave is not the same race as you. Either you believe these things and you're an idiot, or you don't and you're a hippocrite. Which is it?
-
So, if you choose a lifestyle that you are condemned for, you warrant a parade - right? Well, I'm Christian - besides the fact that Christians were martyred at one time, a lot of people on here hate religion and, specifically, Christianity - does that mean I get a parade? I'm still waiting for a logical argument as to why it's fair for gays to have a parade when, if straight people tried to do it, they'd most likely be ridiculed for it. Your comment is based solely on emotion - if we all acted only on emotion, this world would be chaos. Hell, half the people in this world think they're victims of something already, gay or straight - do you really wish to propagate the idea of anyone as perpetual victims? Are you really going to use victimization to justify a parade that is supposedly supposed to be about strength, independence and a GOOD self-image? I hardly call believing oneself to be a perpetual victim for any reason the foundation of a good self-image. Care to try again, Elohim?
-
as The Knob Goblin? Oh I am SO there!
-
Christians want ANOTHER parade? You guys should've been here in Sydney during World Youth Day. Oy vey. Shiny happy people holding hands, I'll tell ya what.
-
You just voided your entire last comment within your first 5 words: "if you choose a lifestyle. . ." That is rediculous and I never have understood that idea: I know for a fact that in my life there wasn't a point where I was equally sexually attracted to girls and boys and had to make my "choice". Do you really remember that day early in puberty when you said "I think women are hot, but I also really feel like making out with lots of my buddies, but you know what: I'm gonna go with the flow and choose the women instead". Really? You actually made a conscious decision like that?
-
i think the parades are more a reaction to years of hiding.
and, i don't hate christians.
i hate renee zellweger.
and, some christians. -
Who's with me?
-
straight people have parades. everyday, they parade down the street, hand in hand with the person they love wthout fear of ridicule or physical harm.
lucky bastards.
they can get married.
they can own businesses and real estate.
they can get into heaven.
all because they "choose" to be staight.
right?
it's like hating someone for being left handed.
also, a 3rd Transporter movie is wholly unnecessary. -
The word in Hebrew is 'Toevah' which is a version of sin known in the proper vernacular as 'sick sick icky pants' Rabbinic details homosexual acts as 'inappropriate but non-punishable'.
So to all you right wing NON-CLERGY trained people, sure the Torah has a phrase about homosexuality, that was expressed by a man around the time of the building of the Second Temple!!!
The Torah - Old Testament - Bible is not the LITERAL WORD OF GOD!!!
As we learn in the Tractate of Taanit (FASTS) the Torah was written by human hand.
'Its not found in heaven' extolls deuteronomy. It was written by humans for humans.
Not one word is literally accurate.
Its all allegory.
If you choose to hate gays, you can only do so if you accept a life of biblical practices, which pretty much means your sabbath and relationship with your wife will SUCK and not in a good way.
Grow up, learn to love everyone equally and join the human race.
-
Hey, I'm all for people who are born gay, but I fucking hate lefties. Who gave them the vote in the first place? They are an abomination and have angered God with their choice.
-
I can't wait to laugh at all the Christian homophobes at the End of Days when it turns out that Jesus was gay. :)
-
I love this talk! It's like I'm watching 'Yentl' all over again!
-
Dick milk, perhaps?
-
Mayor = a significant political office. Agreed! Thanks for Clarifying that.
-
Johnny Smith, as any good Christian like myself can tell you, Jesus hated homosexuals, and participated in many stonings of gay men. He also hated minorities and women and the poor, and was a capitalist. And also somehow caucasian despite being born in the middle east 2000 years ago. Do some research before you post such lies, sir.
-
Your last comment said "I can't take it anymore, man."
So, what, are you going to quit? Are you offing yourself?
No, I think you will continue taking "it" for quite some time. -
Jesus was of Jewish descent. He surrounded himself with minorities and women and the poor. Sure, he was capitalist by way of earning a living be being a carpenter. But that has nothing to do with this.
Even if he happened to be "anti-gay", it wouldn't matter. His final words were "Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do." implying forgiveness, tolerance, and acceptance of ALL people. Do your research somewhere other than the KKK websites! -
Okay, so aparently theres a whole talkback on Christianity. The problem here isn't Christianity, I'm a Christian and love it, and love being gay. But there is a serious difference between the various denominations. I wass raised to believe in a Jesus whose only commandments, and the highest in all Heaven, were to love God with your whole heart and soul and to love you neightbor as yourself. Homophobes who support discrimination are breaking these laws, and thus betray Christ. Yes, Leviticus and Paul's letters take issue with homosexuality, but they are trumped by Jesus's two laws of love, they are the highest laws of heaven. Now quit using my God as an excuse to hate, you just betray yourselves as anti-Christians.
-
and keep your religious/political/social views out of it. But damn, subjects like this, make for damn entertaining and moreso enlightening talkbacks.
-
I may be misreading sthfuDonnie's post, but I think he's trying to be ironic... As you say, in most ways, the historic Jesus was the exact opposite of the things donnie is saying. But a lot of those things which might validly said against some of the violently bigoted people you meet who cloak themselves in religion and try to remake Jesus in their image. In fact, on the capitalist side, the overturning of the tables of the moneylenders is a fairly pointed statement about the importance of money - relative to religion at very least. And for parentage, like the old axiom - he was half Jewish by birth, but as it was on his mother's side you can claim he is fully Jewish by blood (as it passes down the mother's line).
-
That's what I was talking about in my previous post. These people that think God hated Homosexuals are way off I think. They probably had a bad experience and decided to put it in themselves. Arrogant indeed.
-
I do believe Donnie was being sarcastic.
-
Don't worry dude, I was being satirical, my way of saying how annoyed I am that current "Christians" bend the bible to their own means and discriminations and in doing so betray the actual intentions of Jesus. But now that I think of it, how would you know that I was being satirical when many of the posts on this talkback are equally crazy, nonsensical and ridiculous but written in complete seriousness.
-
being sarcastic, come on guys!
-
he beat me to it lol
-
makes me furious
-
Hope you're not suggesting there is anything wrong with out-of-context over-literal readings of small sections of things people have written which are actually dealing with something entirely different... Sounds like heresy to me.
-
when it is perverted, which it *often* is
-
Points taken.I hope he was being sarcastic. Being I'm a conservative, Republican, agnostic...but raise in a Christian home, it bothers me that people might think all Christians or conservatives think with that much hate. No matter what your views are; political, social, or religious,... forgiveness, tolerance, and acceptance should be of highest consideration.
-
"Organized" Religion, try being a Jehovahs Witness. That suuuuucked.
-
Points taken, and understood.
-
Yes I was being sarcastic, but I don't by any means think all christians are full of hate. I myself was raised Catholic, and now consider myself an agnostic/atheist depending on your definition. From people I met in my small Canadian town church when I was still young and went to church, the people who just wanted to "be good to their neighbors", etc. outnumbered the ones that seemed to have agendas and predjudices. This was small town Canada, and from what I've seen the balance is far shifted the other way in a large section of the US, and the ones doing the most and making the most impact in the nation and in the world are the ones with the agendas and predjudices.
-
Sadly, I would have to agree with you about a large section of the U.S. but, it depends on where you look. The talk radio stations are mostly far right, and the left cannot seem to even compete. The Internet is fast becoming far left, and the right cannot compete. It's my own personal belief, and hope that things will change for the better after the election. Either America will have to learn to accept a black man as President, or a woman as Vice. Sure, I know, I know, Palins views lean far right, but hopefully certain family situations will teach her a few things about tolerance.
-
Well, I wouldn't hold out on family situations teaching a (possible) Vice Pres anything about tolerance. Dic Cheney wasn't exactly a champion for gay rights despite his lesbian daughter.
And I agree with your comparison between the internet and talk radio, they are definitely split that way, and I hope its a sign that all those involved with radio are the angry old buggers who still dislike black people and don't know how to operate a computer, and the next generation of computer savvy people are more progressive and open-minded and will be the future. One can only hope. -
Sorry I didn't know one of Penn's homes was in SF. I was critical without even watching the preview first. Penn is good but Harvey had a heck of allot more charisma and had more bite in his sarcastic come backs. Actors can never perfectly portray the passion of a real person in a real world. This could be an american classic of epic proportions and it must not fail, I know it's stupid of me to judge this film without seeing it yet, but Harvey's story is empowering and very near to my heart. I'm just concerned and hope the movie is done right.
-
I would dare say there is a segment of right wing talk radio's audience that oppose the ideology broadcast, but listen anyway. Which ironically increase the audience ratings, and keep them on the air.I worked at a radio station that started to air Limbaugh during my shift, and as much as I despised his message, I was fascinated by his method and delivery and the response from his followers.
-
I agree - with everything you say - nice
-
will there be chicks? and cookies?
-
Without a doubt.
-
in this movie? Cuz he doesn't in real life.
-
Without a doubt.PsychoJust had to toss that out there.
-
Leviticus 17:6 says "And the priest shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar of the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and burn the fat for a sweet savour unto the LORD." What the hell kind of church sacrifices goats anymore. God told Moses to do this and yet you blindly follow one verse of Leviticus and not the others? I think the bible needs a rewrite.
What does this bible stuff have to do with the film anyway? -
Quadfather got the ball rolling that the Bible condemns homosexuals and homosexual activity..
-

Apparently Lucas isnt the only stupid thing you're defending
by industrykiller!
And guess what, when it comes to peoples lives, good lives that don't hurt anyone, I don't fucking care what a book says God says. If God has a problem with people being happy at the expense of no one and nothing then he came come down here and suss it out himself.
-
Reimagining the Bible is a great idea! Get Tim Burton to direct, and have Mark Wahlberg and Tim Roth star as Jesus and the Devil, with Kris Kristofferson playing Moses. Sweet five-toed sloth of ice planet Hoth, we have a movie!
-
Finally standing up to hate speech by threatening ban. Good for you. But man readign this TB was so depressing in spight of it. The ignorance abounds on this site.
-
Hold on to your Lincoln logs boys, my best friend (who is straight) told me that if people knew I'm conservative and atheist, that the republican party would throw me out. Well I'm still here and the only thing I hate is unicorns, Centaurs are my favorite, they'll hung like a... well you know!
I don't hate Sean Penn either. I loved him in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. -

if the bible is to be rewritten....I suggest....
by dannyglovers_dickblood
Wes Anderson. He's got snappy dialogue. For the love of all things gay, please stay the fuck away from that hack Mamet. Redbelt? Eeesh...SUCK MY COCK!
-
Now we allegedly make fun of Mormons all the time? Hogwash. It's amazing what people will pull out to justify poor behavior, but... we bash Mormons? Where does something like that even come from? You, sir, are full of balderdash.
-
Holy shit, you're Wes Anderson?
-
God is a man made construct. Man invented the idea of god and man wrote the bible. So whatever the bible says is whatever god says, because the people who invented it say so. By the way, Mormons suck.
-
...but those people are severely fucked in the head. But then again...hhhmmmm Palin or Romney? What the fuck am I saying?! Mormons rock!!
-
All about the guy who shot him (and some guy named George) and how he got off lightly.
-
A couple of other folks already set Jorson straight, but since his comment was aimed at me, I wanted to throw in a quick question about the Christian persecution complex. As in, wtf is up with the Christian persecution complex? They act like every time someone says their religion is a kooky cult of sheep, the next step is going to be feeding them all to the lions. Well, hopefully this will be a comfort to all of you offended Christians hanging out in the talkback: You have a virtual monopoly on every kind of social, economic and cultural power that exists in this country today. You are the majority. You set the rules and the agenda. There is no other group in this country that is powerful enough to persecute Christians, even if we wanted to. And having someone say something mean about you and getting your feelings all hurt is NOT the same thing as oppression. Life is tough. Buy a helmet.
-
...Uh huh... You know what I'm say'n? And I heard he was hung... On a cross, I mean.
-
Never said it was YOU bashing the Mormons. As a matter of fact, I think the webmasters of this site do a pretty good job of being fair to everyone. It's just that there's no disclaimers or threat after any Ender's Game story which will, without fail, end up being an anti-Mormon crusade. Just saying, when you are a member of a group that gets hosed repeatedly, you begin to wish everyone had a little more tolerance (or intolerance of poor behavior). I agree totally with Harry that he should be able to regulate his own site, and I also despise bashing of gays or any other human beings. The double standard is what gets me. That being said...no offense, sir. I do enjoy your site.
-
If the films as good as the trailer it should be Oscar worthy. It is interesting how Talkbackers will flock all over films like RAMBO (which I liked) praising it as the second coming of cinema, but anything dealing with non-main stream subjects hate-mongering rears it's ugly head. I guess it's something you just have to live with when dealing with a talk back site. The problem when discussing something with someone who's extremely prejudice or racist is that you can't disprove an opinion, not to the true believers of that opinion. No matter how twisted that opinion might be they'll still proclaim it as fact, without even a strong understanding of what the term "fact" actually means.
-
You're right that no young person was standing before the blue and pink levers and 'chose' I'll go gay. But neither did these belligerent christians chose at a turning point "I'll be American" or "I'll be racist" or "I'll be a homophobe". The social engine is complex and ever changing. The strongest statistical determinant for homosexuality is the number of older brothers a boy has (no statistical effect on girls). But even in this study the scientists carrying it out were bending over backwards to attribute the effect to a chemical occurance during gestation, because if people are born gay it will be much easier to achieve equal rights in the present political situation, because discrimination against them would be wrongerer. All I'm saying is don't put all your eggs in the gay gene basket, you're free to be yourself whether or not your life was inherent.
-
can you point me to a link elaborating on your claim about the statistical correlation between the number of older brothers a a boy has and homosexuality? can't say i've ever heard about that one before. thanks.
-
And by the way I have to admit a bias, I read to much Sartre, Howard Bloom, etc.
-
Sigh.
I love America. I really do. But when i read shit like this, the usual homophobic spouting or religious bile, i just don't know anymore. How can a society have everything yet be absolutely hollow :( -
I don't know... But a 30-something Jewish bachelor who has never shown an interest in women IS mighty suspect. Wouldn't it be amazing if he was though and someone was able to prove it? Could you imagine the sound of 1 billions Christians' heads exploding at once?
-
I cannot believe there are still people who cling to this idea of Homosexuality as a CHOICE. It's not. What's next are you going to tell me evolution isn't real? You bitches are crazy.
-
More and more I'm starting to really like James Franco's work. Guy's just getting more and more interesting.

I just hope there're no more pointless Van Sant remakes. . .
by chief redcock
. . .like Psycho. That would be about as appetizing as watching a Who's the Boss marathon (including the episode with Mike Tyson, and the episode with the Living Dolls) with Gus Van Rant on a Saturday night in his mom's basement (Not very).
-
Is DANNYGLOVERS_DICKBLOOD black? I have to know so I can sleep well at night.
-
Sorry, I'm hoping "Satan's Alley" gets the green light. Spiderman, Iron Man, an abandoned abbey, seven days and seven sins to break. Boo-yeah!
-
Penn IS too flamboyant. Brolin is creepily dead-on as Dan White, though...check out "The Times Of Harvey Milk" part 3/10 over at YouTube...
-
Gays, straight, bi-sexual. Why does anyone care? I knew a guy in high school who dated the UGLIEST girl I have ever known (at the time). Yeah, we gave him shit about it, A LOT, but really, did it affect us at all? NO! If some guy wants to plug another one full of his special sauce, who are we as a society to tell him he can't? "BUT THE BIBLE SAYS..." FUCK THAT! If you want to read and interpret a book that has been revised and translated more times than the entre Weinstein catalogue of foreign films, be my guest. But don't preach your bullshit like you're right and I'm wrong. Whatever happened to "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all."? Just like your sense of humanity, it is gone with the wind. Grow the fuck up and start living in reality.
-
god doesn't write books and if he hates anyone its the people making a ton of money off his name.
-
For the most part, we're tolerant of race, culture and religion so long as it doesn't harm anyone. Two guys wanna have butt-sex all day? So what? Did they harm me? Did they cause the price of bread to rise, keeping food from my kids' mouths? Hurt my kids? Nope? Then FINE enjoy - I'm glad you are emotionally, spiritually (and sexually) fulfilled, few people are.
And when I read about people not being comfortable with a black president, I have to laugh. You know what the difference between a jaguar and a panther is? Nothing. Just the pelt. Sounds cheesy, but really - do you believe that Obama getting in is going to like South Africa's power switch? Black people are going to all-of-a-sudden be given "white man" farms while the former owners run for fear of their lives?
The stupidity and ignorance of some people is absolutely astounding and frightening. Yes - I called you stupid and ignorant. Perhaps I should have said "uneducated", since life (experience) up here has "taught" us that blacks, homosexuals, Muslims or whatever is different aren't things to fear.Movie looks good, Elephant was boring.
-
What I wrote I wrote as a man presupposing in faith that the Bible is true. That being said, you should know that those "heteros" as you identified them, that carouse in public are indeed comitting shameful acts. I do not disagree. My contention is not that homosexual desire is a choice and therefore poor decision making but rather that it very well could be a desire one is born with, just like I was born with desires that are contrary to the will of God in the bible as well. Homosexuality may well be natural for you as viewing pornography(something Jesus teaches is adultry of the heart)is for me, which is consistent with what the bible says about our natures.... that they naturally are opposed to God's as a result of the fall way back from the beginning. In answer to your question then of who has the right to tell you what sexual desires are wrong or right, the answer is obvious if the bible is true: The one who made you -God. Herein we have a wonderful example of how one might apply this message from Christ,"If anyone wants to come after me let him take up his cross, deny himself and follow me." ..........................Ahem,For You, Indusrykiller, yes, I will lways defend the great George Lucas as the man who gave me my most beloved films."I find your lack of faith disturbing FOVVVVVVVV{Darth Vader force choke noise}"
-
is a homosexual someone who engages in an act, or is it someone who is in a state of being. a virgin homosexual, which is the person you are communicating with is clearly someone in a state of being, rather than engaging in an act. an act can be wrong, but a state of being can not. furthermore, that homosexual is a state rather than an act, makes the act difficult to argue against. (this argument has clear flaws) homosexuality is clearly against the non gospel part of the bible (sorry mori it is) but this should not be relevant in law making as only god has the prerogative to judge. thus biblically a fundamentalist christan should think to themselves 'this person is destined for hell fire, but it is not for me to make their time on earth any worse than it currently is. god may punish them, but it is not for me to do so.' basically, if you are a christan you should believe that there is punishment, but you are not it. It is not you that puts misery on a sinner. which is another way of saying mind your own business.
-
It will be known as the Chicks and Cookies parade! There's only two of us so far but I think that's enough, unless someone has the official figures for what counts a parade? I reckon as long as we walk down the center of the street shouting "Chicks and Cookies", we're OK. So, unless there's something in the bible against chicks and cookies, lets go for it!
-
andy kaufman will be there. this is what he has been waiting for.
-
Whatever dude, all I know is that when I see a vagina, I see the mouth of the face hugger from Alien. I hope you feel validated in your thinly veiled predjuced judgments, I'm sure the all loving Jesus would be proud. Thank God for peoplel like Harvey Milk.
-
Appreciate your views mate, really. Never really thought of my homosexuality as a state of being, how friggen existenial!
-
According to section 12 paragraph 2 everyone will be forced into being fabulous, so the choice won't be gay or straight, it will be top or bottom.
-
...is easily Van Sant's best, can't believe no one mentioned it yet. This looks good, though I prefer the indie Van Sant to the Good Will Hunting Hollywood Van Sant.
-
and this film looks fantastic. A fascinating story that looks like it's getting the treatment it deserves. That james franco too...dayum. As for the whole gay being a choice/not being a choice debate. I think we all appreciate beauty in all it's forms, whether it be full or thin, tall or short, male or female. Just some of us choose to act on those desires in different ways then others. Nothing wrong about it, as long as no one is getting hurt. Which is unfortunately what happened to Milk. Is it essentially a choice? Yes it is, and a wonderful choice at that.
-
The preview got me choked up. I'm excited for this. I hope it lives up to all this commotion.
