Danny Boyle's SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE Finds A Home At Fox Searchlight, Gets A 2008 Release Date!!

Published at:  Sep 01, 2008 3:16:03 PM CDT

Beaks here...

A couple of weeks ago, we learned of Joel Silver's displeasure with the marketing of ROCKNROLLA, and Warner Bros.' willingness to sell the film's distribution rights for an undisclosed price. That talk seems to have died down, but another Warner property that was also reported to be stuck in release limbo, Danny Boyle's SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, has indeed migrated to another studio. And judging from Todd McCarthy's rave review in Variety, WB's loss could be Fox Searchlight's awards-reaping gain.

Best of all, you won't have to wait until 2009 for Boyle's latest: Fox Searchlight will begin rolling out SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE this November 28th!

I haven't read much about the film, so rather than regurgitate the IMDb plot summary, here's an excerpt from the opening paragraph of McCarthy's review:

Driven by fantastic energy and a torrent of vivid images of India old and new, "Slumdog Millionaire" is a blast. Danny Boyle's film uses the dilemma of a poor teenager suspected of cheating on the local version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'' to tell a story of social mobility that is positively Dickensian in its attention to detail and the extremes of poverty and wealth within a culture.

I even sort of liked Millions

    by pumpymcass

But Sunshine sucked ass. Hope this "kiddie-ish" sounding fare brings back the old, exciting Boyle.

Always looking forward for new Danny Boyle!

    by derlanghaarige

Although "The Beach" was one epic fail and "28 Days Later" suffered from a lame 2nd half, he is still one of the best filmmakers around.
In a better world he would get all the praise that Tarantino got in the past.

I like him more when he strays from sci-fi.

Millions is one of the best children's films of the decade. It's deep, approachable, powerful, and moral film that adults will get as much out of as their offspring. I can't wait for this one.

Will it fall apart in the third act?

    by gravitysrainbow

Sunshine was incredibly disappointing. This guy and the third act...

India through the eyes of Boyle, sounds great

    by pipergates

India is a fantastic spectacle, Darjeeling just scratched the surface. When are they going to film Shantaram! Boyle would be the perfect director for it. And i hope somebody big and ugly like Russell Crowe gets the main role, Depp would have to work out a lot to look anything like that character...

    Agreed about Sunshine

    by 7cal

Woulda been one of my favorites of 2007 if not for the horrific final act. Gee I know, let's take a smart, exciting, hard-sci-fi movie and turn it into a BORING wannabe slasher flick. Blech.

For all the people who hate Sunshines third act

    by lovecraftfan

Do you include the actual ending. The scenes of Cappas leap of faith between the ship and the payload and the final moments where he touches the surface of the sun are simply stunning. People who wine about the third act seem to always forget about the actual fantastic ending the film has.

    Loved Millions and Sunshine

    by supertoyslast

Every review that I read before seeing Sunshine said that it was not quite the film the reviewer was hoping to see. So I was expecting an average film with an unfocused ending. But I was pleasantly surprised to find a film I loved with, for me, no serious flaws. I didn't understand the huge dislike for the final act, but I guess a lot of people didn't like the shift in tone.Oh, and Millions was just a pure joy.

Whats so bad about the final shot being on earth

    by lovecraftfan

I thought it was a beautiful image with Cillian's haunting final VO lines. I simply don't see whats bad about that beautiful ending.

    Sunshines soundtrack

    by charyoutree

..is perfect and agreed the slasher aspect is a bit meh, but the leap, and the switching on of the bomb is beautiful, and the ending shot I think was originaly intended for near the begining, but Im sure I can remember him saying you shouldn't see earth in a space set Sci-Fi unless its at the end or something,

All the couch potatoes hate a shift in tone/genre

    by half vader

They just want extreme predictability. "This isn't what I paid for!"

Remember how much you all hated the shift in Vanilla Sky? You fucking slaughtered it.

Yet somehow people defend Event Horizon...

    by half vader

Because they knew what they were in for from the start I guess...

I like it when a film's a bit unpredictable. Doesn't always work, but what DOES always work? Who knew we were gonna get the gimp/rape scene when they stumbled into that shop in Pulp Fiction?

I don't defend Event Horizon or Sunshine.

    by amy chasing

Both sucked. Maybe not Shyamalan's Happening sucked, and definitely not as sucky as Dreamcatcher, but they still sucked. Just because something is pretty doesn't mean it's good - take Revenge Of The Sith for example, and I enjoyed that more than Event Horizon or Sunshine.

Like I said, Sunshine was pretty and the score was great, but the way the story and characters were written - just unbelieveable. The crew came across like the cast of Home And Away (the Australian soap) in space - pretty people with a teenagers grasp of human interaction & relationships, not a credible mission crew sent as Earth's last best hope.

28 Days Later was ok so perhaps there's hope. Just as long as he doesn't try to put out any more fires by using oxygen.

Hey Danny Boyle, check THIS out!

    by california_mtz

FUCK FOX! I'm not seeing ANYTHING by them until the Watchmen situation gets settled! Your big Thanksgiving releases ... No! Your big Christmas releases ... NO! Nothing! Not one damn movie until Watchmen is cleared. If anyone thinks it's unfair to penalize an unrelated movie, think about this, when was the last time FOX really didn't fuck up a movie? Everything that shitty studio touches it fucks up so why would I trust any movie that comes out that's been branded by FOX?

    by half vader

Yeah right. Empty promises. You know it'll e settled before then, for better or worse. Feh. Oh and yep it's unfair to penalise a Fox/Searchlight/Atomic film when the only thing they have to do with something like a foreign indy film is release the thing.

    Shutup California.....

    by thewaqman

Who gives a shit about the Watchmen anyways? For once I'm glad Fox is trying to fuck a project up (just this once though), because it can't get any more fucked than what Zack Snyder will do to it. Prepare for numerous slow-mo scenes.

Anyways I can't wait for this "Slumdog Millionaire" movie.

IMO the only huge missteps that Danny Boyle has taken was Sunshine (the third act, no matter how much you guys stick up for it, fell flat badly and just ripped it away from being a science-fiction great) and The Beach. So still I'm pretty optimistic about this film. Also I have yet to see "Millions".

Sunshine was bizarre in that ...

    by shan

... the script copied Event Horizon so closely from start to finish, it had to be an accident. Because if they'd realised, they would have changed something, somewhere.

    Why did Danny Boyle

    by series7

Direct that new show coming on comedy central starring David Alan Greer? Seriously, its gotta suck, did he need money after Fox Searchlight decided to make turn the immaculate conception of Sunshine into a still birth upon its aborting it into the states. It only made like 3 million, and that movie had to cost a lot more then that. And Fox Searchlight was too busy sucking Juno's cock to give a damn about its much better movie property that could've brought in a decent return. Seriously when I was going to see Sunshine for the one weekend it was out, these teens where in front of me getting excited to see Hairspray again and were all asking each other what movie sunshine was. They all looked like football players so I didn't want to start anything.

    Boyle is the fuckin man!!!

    by tallboy66

Sunshine was awesome, yes it shamelessly cribbed from several sources, but it was really cool, and philosophical and looked absolutely pretty and I loved what happened at the very end. And Millions is fantastic, so is Trainspotting is an instant classic. And I think before the army shows up in 28 Days Later is one of the best zombie movies ever. (Post-Army scenes = eh) Bring on more Boyle, in anything!!

    As for Sunshine's ending--

    by tallboy66

I like the slasher flick, mainly because it's so randomly crazy, and the motivations of the aforementioned slasher really drive home the point of the story is where "you can't get too close to the sun". It drove the slasher dude bugfuck nuts!! "For seven years I talked to God, he told me to send us all to Heaven!!" See? Crazy person driven mad by reaching for the sun. but they eventually do it, but they have to sacrifice everything to do so. And that final shot is tragic and fantastic all at once. Great flick, probably in my 2nd favourite Boyle flick behind Trainspotting.
