Harry's DVD Picks & Peeks - 1st week of Sept DVDs: Fox Noir, Ahnuldt, The Next Avengers, Time after Time, Faerie Tales & more!!!

Published at:  Sep 01, 2008 7:34:46 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with the first DVD PICKS AND PEEKS of September 2008! All sorts of treats lay in wait for you. I hope you enjoy the list as much as I had watching and making it. As always if you choose to click on a DVD or Title you’ll be taken to AMAZON where you can learn more on the title in question – or you may purchase it, which would in turn go to support this column in its efforts to bring you the best DVD preview there is out there. At least its me personal goal.

THE OFFICE: SEASON FOUR

I know the series has its fans, and I’m sure for many it is wonderful, but for me – I’m in love with the original and just prefer those characters, performers and that version. This season was cut short due to the Writer’s Strike, but I understand that it was quite a solid season, if you agree, you’ll probably want this.

TRANSFORMERS (2-Disc Special Edition) Blu-Ray

Essentially the Blu-Ray version of the HD-DVD release of TRANSFORMERS, so now Michael Bay can tone down his bellyaching, as he finally has his Blu-Ray disc (or two) to call his very own. The film does play better on a smaller screen than in theaters in my opinion. By shrinking the image – it makes more sense – whereas on a giant screen, I felt the last 40 minutes were just a headache. Still not the movie I wanted, let’s hope the next time out – they actually treat the stars (aka the robots) as characters.

SUPERNATURAL – 3rd Season

I’d never heard of this series until the Fangoria Convention here in Austin earlier this year which had Jared Padalecki showing up on the second day of the festivities – and suddenly from the ground sprouted and infinite amount of teen girls screaming and crushing something fierce. SO my question to all of you is this – is this something I should check out, or is this series something that only appeals to the Training Bra set?

ROAD HOUSE

No – not the Patrick Swayze movie – which is the most fun movie with the title ROAD HOUSE. However, not the best. This film stars the gorgeous and criminally talented Ida Lupino… along with two of my fave character actors – Cornel Wilde and Richard Widmark. This film is a true triumph of shadow & light. The cinematography will truly take your breath away, even for veterans of Film Noir collecting and viewing. While Widmark isn’t up to his gold standard of Tommy Udo, his villainous turn here is not to be missed. This is gold!

ERASER (Blu Ray)

Probably the last film that Chuck Russell did that I enjoyed. That said – the only thing that keeps this out of the truck stop toilet of funky Ahnuldt films is the grovy fucking guns and a bad ass named James Caan. That said – the super guns in this are just neato torpedo. And in Blu-ray you can admire their exquisite neatness. I know it sounds retarded to be as giddy as I am over these guns, but as a kid that collected rayguns from the 50’s & 60’s & 70’s – well… it’s just so cool to see these guns do their thing. I just wish I had one.

MOONTIDE

Another Fox Noir starring the exquisite Ida Lupino – this one comes at us with a fantastic cast. You may not know the French acting sensation – Jean Gabin ( PEPE LE MOKO, GRAND ILLUSION ) – but that’s cuz most of his work is in early French cinema – and he hardly at all worked in U.S. films. However, in addition to those two you get the amazing Thomas Mitchell and Ralph Byrd – and most of all… literally one of my fave fave actors of all time… Claude Rains. This is a film with an equally amazing team behind the scenes. You had director Archie Mayo – then Fritz Lang directed a bit of this – and most importantly – Salvador Dali handled the aptly surreal drunken masterful sequence. Seriously – this is a forgotten jewel filled with talent and spilling over with style and cool!

OUTBREAK (BluRay)

Remember when there seemed to be a half dozen bio-terror flicks rushing the development bleachers to reach the top of the box office? Well, Wolfgang Petersen’s OUTBREAK was one of the less nonsensical ones. Starring Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman and Rene Russo – probably the most striking image of the film was that fucking screaming monkey of death! Bio-terror is a creepy fucking thing and in a post-9/11 environment where we’ve been conditioned for the worst case scenarios… the film actually punches better than it did at the time. Oddly – watching New Orleans emptying out on the news channels the past couple of days – kinda echoed imagery from this. And they didn’t even credit Wolfgang. Poor guy.

THE NEXT AVENGERS: HEROES OF TOMORROW

When this came in the mail – I almost tossed it. Just looking at the art on the cover made me want to write it off. But I’m a kid at heart and figured… what the fuck, you can always turn it off. In a very odd way this is absolutely the best of the Lionsgate Animated features based on Marvel properties. Basically – the SKYNET / MATRIX Armageddon of man has happened to the Marvel Universe. Just about everyone in the United States, South America, Europe & Africa have been wiped out by ULTRON and his technology. Tony Stark has been raising a group of kids – the offspring of characters like Thor, Captain America, Black Panther, Giant-Man/Wasp and Hawkeye. They’ve been hiding in a secret location that gets fucked up early – and the kids… not nearly as powerful as they should be are forced into the post apocalyptic nightmare of facing the creation that destroyed their collective parents. And yes, it’s kind of that Dire. I found the animated film strangely effective – and absolutely loved the old age Bruce Banner as a crazed man in the desert scared of contact with anybody for fear of releasing the beast within. It was Banner by way of Ben Gunn. Very cool. And ULTRON is a badass. Way better than it had any right being.

HONEY WEST – Full Series

Ok – All those with an Anne Francis fetish raise your hands! Ok – the rest of you – go watch FORBIDDEN PLANET and develop a lifelong crush. NOW – here – she’s a tad older, just as lovely and adorable and a female private eye that was badass. She was a hard powdered nosed gal that carried a gun and got in fights while most all other televised femmes were worried about their nails and hair. Honey West was a tough lady long before we got a peek at others. This is an outstanding set – and again – for those of us that love Anne Francis – here you get a really great series starring her.

THE BOYS IN COMPANY C

R Lee Ermey’s first Film role – wasn’t in FULL METAL JACKET, but THE BOYS IN COMPANY C – and over all – this film does feel a bit like FULL METAL JACKET, but rougher around the edges. This is a very good Vietnam flick. If you like the films about Nam, this is a solid one to check out!

THE PROMOTION

I wrote up a full review of this film in advance of its screening at SXSW in March of this year. Sadly the film by Steve Conrad sort of came and went with all the fanfare of a whispered “psst” at the Super Bowl. Released around the time of the big films at the start of the summer, it really had no chance to be noticed – and it is a shame as it is the best film that Seann William Scott has made so far – and features a wonderful performance by John C Reilly… as an inept Canadian with baggage – as the two characters battle for the same promotion at their Grocery Store. It’s a lot of fun!

UNDER SIEGE 2 – Dark Territory (Blu Ray)

You know – having read Vern’s book on the almight Seagal – it’s required now that I must go out and buy and own all Steven Seagal films. I stopped checking his movies out around the time he made that one with the painful Environmental messages. I never caught the sequel to UNDER SIEGE, which I like quite a bit. I haven’t been sent this disc yet, but I plan to pick it up Tuesday.

Shelley Duvall’s FAERIE TALE THEATRE: Complete Collection

Do not watch these while on a psychoactive substance. For example – say you were to take a fistful of shrooms and watch HANSEL AND GRETEL – at one level you’d think… AH it’s a children’s tale, this should be innocent. But in this version – you realize that Hansel and Gretel were running away because their father was remarrying a woman they didn’t approve of… and then – Shelley being a sick twisted genius making these tales… cast the Witch and the StepMother as the same actress – and when the kids are safe with their father at the end… there’s not StepMother anymore because the kids fucking COOKED HER! THIS SHIT IS TWISTED – You’ll need all your wits about you as you watch this. They’ll sneak up and fuck your mind! Especially if you’re on crazed hypersensitive space mode. Let this be your warning, from someone that… read about this experience … yeah. That’s what happened. Yeah. That said – here you’ll get 26 awesome faerie tales with folks like Christopher Reeve, Robin Williams, Mich Jagger and James Earl Jones!!! A great set!

THE GAUNTLET (Blu Ray)

You see that Frank Frazetta cover art for this Blu Ray? Doesn’t that look like the absolute best movie ever made? It isn’t. But it doesn’t suck either. This is a kinda future world detective film, that just is never as magnificent as the dream that fucking Frazetta art makes you hope for. But for those of you that believe that UNFORGIVEN is his best Western (not me) then you may feel this is his best “detective” film along those same lines. Of being burnt out and nihilistic. In particular – look out for Bill McKinney!

EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE (Blu Ray)

I love this film – though I feel it distracted Eastwood’s career for about a decade of silliness. But dude. That monkey/ape thing… Clyde. He fucking owns this movie. When Eastwood shoots him with a finger gun and he collapses. I want a monkey that’ll do that. You could rule the world. Become President. Cure any disease if you had a simian assistant to would die by finger gun on command. It would cease wars. Settle disputes. Make the infertile fertile. It’s that good.

ITTY BITTY TITTY COMMITTEE

This is a fun Lesbian film from the maker of the very fun BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER. And Daniela Sea is… um… wow. And there’s girls that kiss and that’s just awesome. But this isn’t a great film. The spark isn’t quite there for me, it was nice to watch, but isn’t as great as I hoped.

FIST OF LEGEND

This is a remake of Bruce Lee’s FIST OF FURY (known in US as CHINESE CONNECTION) – and while it is fucking unbelievably great… Bruce Lee’s original FIST OF FURY in Mandarin is even better. I didn’t used to feel this way. When I first saw FIST OF LEGEND, I had only seen the American version of Bruce’s film. But when Tarantino screened his original Mandarin print of FIST OF FURY – HOLY FUCK – suddenly you could watch and hear Bruce’s full performance – and the missing scenes were everything. That said – I LOVE FIST OF LEGEND. Easily one of the great Jet Li movies. If you’ve never seen it. I can not possibly recommend it highly enough!

THE INVINCIBLE IRON MAN (BluRay)

Wow – Favreau really took the wind out of this movie. I liked it quite a bit when I saw it earlier this year, but it just is hard not to compare the origin stories – and Jon’s is just so much better. That said, I like the film, I just wish it didn’t involve Iron Man’s Origin. It just fails to compare.

IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN

I can’t possibly calculate the number of times I’ve seen IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN. I mean – it’s easily at least 36 times. Once a year for the duration of my life thus far. But possibly 72 or 90 times, cuz I love it – and I seem to remember a couple of Halloween pumpkin carving parties where it played on heavy rotation. But Linus’ GREAT PUMPKIN waiting… hanging out in a pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin… the world calling you a fool. Possibly the very meaning of being a believer. I LOVE THIS CARTOON. A great toon.

BLACK MASK (Blu Ray)

Sigh. FUCK THIS RELEASE IN IT’S BLU-RAY EAR!!! Can someone explain to me why Lionsgate would release this with out an original language track – and instead – only have the SHIT FUCK ROTTEN ASS BOOGER ENGLISH DUB TRACK??? I couldn’t believe it. Infinite storage and capacity and they don’t put the original fucking language track on here? Fuck YOU! FUCK THIS RELEASE! FUCK!

TIME AFTER TIME

Very Possibly my favorite Time Travel film ever made. I love Pal’s THE TIME MACHINE, but frankly – this story is even better. The idea of H.G. Wells tracking Jack The Ripper to modern San Francisco – falling in love with a feminist bank teller and doing battle with the ripper. BLISS. Bliss because David Warner is fucking depraved evil. Bliss because Malcolm McDowell is the cutest possible version of H.G. Wells ever. And BLISS because Mary Steenburgen was a woman you’d risk it all for. She’s a woman that the idea of losing would break your heart, that would make you humble yourself before others for. Also – the commentary by Malcolm McDowell, David Warner and Nicholas Meyer… yeah. I’m not big on commentaries, but this is one of them that I couldn’t resist and was rewarded for. Brilliant little film. Absolutely fantastic.

THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS – Special Edition (1936)

I love Michael Mann’s LAST OF THE MOHICANS – but watching this version starring Randolph Scott in the Daniel Day Lewis role – is quite striking and this dvd is remarkably well put together. In particular look for Bruce Cabot (Jack Driscoll from KING KONG) as the evil revenge craved Magua. He’s pretty great in the role. By no means is this better than Mann’s – but it is very much a great film for its time. And one you’ll love a lot about.

THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK (1939)

Directed by the great James Whale ( FRANKENSTEIN, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN & THE INVISIBLE MAN ) – this is the best version of THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK! Aided by a fantastic score – and just Whale’s tremendous attention to detail. I’ve watched this film my entire life. I’ve always been drawn to heroic tales and my parents recorded this off TV in about 1977 for me. Louis Hayward’s Philippe of Gascony captivated me. That it also featured the famed Four Musketeers on their last adventure – was also a strong selling point for me. And that Alan Hale played my favorite version of Porthos… well all the better. Besides – Joan Bennett is a lovely Princess Theresa.

BAVARIAN SEX COMEDY COLLECTION ( RUN VIRGIN RUN, INN OF 1000 SINS, BOTTOMS UP & I LIKE THE GIRLS WHO DO )

You know – who doesn’t love a bit of hilarious German Sex Comedy when you get a chance. First off – Bavarian women are so yummy. This isn’t hardcore, but softcore. Which just makes it sweet, silly and a tad innocent. That said – higher percentages of tits than any R-rated films we see these days. Fucking prigs.

That’s it for this week – next week we’ll be looking at SMALLVILLE’s 7th Season, THE BIG LEBOWSKI’s 10th Anniversary Limited Edition, THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM, BABY MAMA, THE FALL, RODAN/WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS, HOW THE WEST WAS WON – Blu Ray, FOX HORROR CLASSICS COLLECTION VOLUME 2, JERRY MAGUIRE (Blu Ray), COOL HAND LUKE (Blu Ray), CHILD’S PLAY, THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, RUDY (Blu Ray), LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES vol 3, NIGHT WATCH/DAY WATCH (Blu Ray), PUMPKINHEAD, BLOODY MOON, KILL BILL Vol 1&2 (Blu Ray), LORD OF THE FLIES, ZOMBIES! ZOMBIES! ZOMBIES! – STRIPPERS VS ZOMBIES, Zombie Blu Ray Gift Set, KIDNAPPING OF THE PRESIDENT, TAE GUK GI – Brotherhood of War (Blu Ray), WILD STRAWBERRIES, GRAND ILLUSIONS, FRIDAY THE 13th, ESSENTIAL ART HOUSE Volume 1 and much much more!

    1) You can't bring up "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" and not reference the line, "I got a rock", one of my favorites from any Peanuts specials 2) Time After Time was one of the first truly scary movies I got to see in the theater, very nostalgic for me 3) War of the FREAKIN' Gargantuas is coming out on DVD! When I was really little the Green gargantua used to scare the piss out of me. Damn, it looks like I'm spending some money on DVDs soon.

    by jackislost

The American version of "The Office" is outstanding and the "Dinner Party" episode from Season 4 was an instant classic. (You cannot not love Hunter's song that Jan is obsessed with: "That ONE night, you made everything alright...so wrong, so right, all night, all right, oh yeah...") There is only one thing I want out of TRANSFORMERS 2--more of Sam's parents. Julie White's first reaction to finding Megan Fox in her son's room was absolutely priceless. In fact, throw out the action and make the whole thing a comedy. All of my favorite moments from the original are the humor bits. And finally, James Caan's performance in ERASER is really very good--he takes a stock villain and makes him very memorable.

I am one of the few here who digs this movie. Always have, always will. AND finally on Blu-ray! Sure it has it's issue's, but over-all it does it's job as a "popcorn" flik. And the score for that movie is amazing. Definately picking up Eraser, the Jet Li one and the Eastwood stuff. Holy hell so much stuff to buy from last week and this week and next. I can't wait for the rodan/War and The Fall!!!!

    by knuckleduster

In fact, I was quite offended when I saw that very first episode, but it has grown into a great show that can stand on its own. Still, nothing will ever surpass the original. Harry, you need to watch Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Without a doubt the funniest british sitcom since The Office. Utterly fuckin brilliant. Don't wait for a region 1 release. by gilkuliehe

I'm a fan of the original and like many, didn't really like the American version until mid to late second season... One of the turning points was definetly that bit where the "cameraman" ran towards Pam's desk to let her know there was something between Angela and Dwight. Great moment... Anyway, my question is, anyone has rewatched the first and second season after not liking it and getting hooked later? Do the early episodes improve, or do they feel the same as the first time?

    Supernatural

    by deagol21

If you liked X-Files (the TV show, not the dreadful movies) and Buffy, then you should really like Supernatural. It's built up a neato mythology of its own, while still retaining the "Monster-of-the-week" formula that made those other shows fun to watch. The chemistry between the brothers is also really great - they constantly verbally jab at each other, yet have each other's backs through thick and thing. AND, they play lots of classic rock from the 70s. Despite being produced by McG, it is a pretty solid, fun show. Definitely check it out!

Watched that movie recently with high hopes...and was very disappointed - it felt like it was directed by a reject TV director, and just felt flat. Mary was cute tho and the idea was pretty cool.

    Time After Time

    by kentucky colonel

I was just in San Francisco last week and, while driving the 49 Mile Scenic Drive, came across the plaza where HG chased Jack through the Finance Distric. So of course I stopped and took photos. The Palace of Fine Arts was closed due to "seismic reconstruction", so that was a bummer, but a fantastic city (and great movie) nonetheless.

Oh, yeah...he gave us Star Trek II, too. Speaking of STII...I was at a screening of Aliens last night, and in many places the soundtracks (James Horner for both, right?) were eerily similar. Is it plagarisim to copy your own work?

    Another vote for Supernatural

    by mrd

No it isn't as good as BTVS or Angel, but it's not Charmed or Supernatural either. First season is a bit formulaic, but effective. By Season 2 and 3 they are much more willing to play with their format and explore their mythology.

Anybody who says Supernatural is just for the Teenage crowd only looked at the cover and has never watched every episode. The show completely underrated and the mythology is fantastic. I thought the same thing when I saw the cover and knew it was on the CW and avoided it until recently when I got the DVD. I think you will be pretty damn surprised about how good it is. As for the whole, "only for teenagers" thing, they drive around an old muscle car and most of the music besides the actual score, is from 80's metal bands. It's actually interesting that the show decided to go the extra mile and put some character it while not pandering to the bullshit "hits" of today. If they wanted to only hook a teenage audience, they sure as hell wouldn't make the main characters (or at least one of them) a throwback to the late 70's and 80's. I can understand people's apprehension towards it based on first glances... I sure as hell thought the same thing.

    - Did someone actually say that they wanted more humor in TRANSFORMERS 2 like in the first movie?! Vern nailed it on the fucking head when he said that the constant stream of campy 'humor' killed the first movie. Here's hoping for some punch-up on the sequel.

    - OUTBREAK...hugely underrated movie. Exciting, with great dialogue and one of James Newton Howard's best scores.

    - I've heard (mainly at IMDB) people blasting THE PROMOTION. If you've never worked a job like this (esp. one where you come across situations like having to deal with obnoxious customers and they get what they want and you end up looking like a schmuck), of course, it's going to seem terrible. For me, though, it was a pretty good character-based comedy, which is very rare these days.

It's laugh-out-loud funny while still being subtle and heartwarming (but not in that icky Hallmark Channel kind of way) with a great sense of nostalgia and light pathos. It also crosses predetermined demographic borders pretty easily. The third season just came out on DVD last Tuesday, and I rewatched the entire season in two days. Great replay value.

Took me a while to get into it, so ended up getting the DVD's and thought it was a really good show. I was surprised how dark and gory this show is, but it's biggest strength is it's choice of locations. I believe they shoot the show up near Vancouver which is where they shot those great X-Files episodes. Harry, get the entire series and watch them over a few nights and I guarantee you'll be prancing about in a training bra singing Highway to Hell...Seriously, it's the best horror themed show since Buffy & X-Files ended.

NOT Manderin. Hong Kong speaks Cantonese which sounds a great deal different than Manderin which is Mainland China's official language. Cantonese is a marvelous language on film. Manderin sounds like screeching cats. Abount 99% of Hong Kong films that are not coproductions with mainland China are filmed in Cantonese. THough you would be correct with respect to many of the late 60's to mid 70's Kung Fu films like the Shaw Bros. epics and Early Golden Harvest productions which were mainly dubbed in Manderin. And that's something to grow on!!!

  • They're basically the same show with minor deviations. The U.S. version fleshed out the supporting characters more, and goes for a broader comedy aside from just awkwardness, and the U.K version had a tighter storyline and character arcs with the limited number of episodes. Both are good, just slightly different, and saying that you LOVE one and HATE the other one is just being closeminded or elitist.

    Regarding Supernatural

    by stormy48

Hi Harry, I've been reading AICN for several years now, but this is the first time I've really wanted to comment. I'm surprised that you folks at AICN haven't been all over Supernatural, in a positive way. I've been a fan since the beginning, and it's been decades since I've worn a training bra. Yes, the two lead actors on Supernatural are considered very hot by many female viewers, but don't let that stop you from watching it. It's well-written, acted and directed. Kim Manners is a co-executive producer, and other X-Files and Miracles vets are involved. It's a horror story that's also about the bonds of family. There's plenty of gore, but also a ton of suspense, humor and gripping plotlines. It's about two brothers are on a cross-country roadtrip, trying to find and kill anything evil they can, sort of a family business. They run across a lot of urban legends that turn out to be real. One brother may or may not be the Anti-Christ, but has definitely been tainted with demon blood; the other made a deal with a demon and was literally killed and sent to hell at the end of this past season. Not something you see in your average genre show. Give the first season a try; starting with the third might just be confusing. Despite it being on the CW, this is not a show aimed at teens. Some of the fans get a little overzealous, but I think you see that all the time on this site. Give it a try, and I honestly don't think you'll regret it. Your wife might like it too; if she was a fan of Gilmore Girls, she'll know who Jared Padalecki is, but she might not even recognize him here.

    steenburgen, Supernatural, and Sea

    by necgray

I just caught Step Brothers yesterday and YES! Steenburgen is totally MILF. I'd gladly be bait for that cougar.I dig Supernatural, though it does suffer from some patented McG-isms. The muscle car porn shots, overly slick presentation, and devotion to arena rock are big hallmarks of his work. And I feel like the show is awfully full of testosterone. BUT it is also a lot of fun. And I agree that they've stepped up their game since the first season. 2 is good, 3 is pretty damn good. Hopefully 4 will be great. Finally, I wanted to mention that Daniela Sea is AWESOME on Showtime's The L Word. I like the entire cast of that show, actually, but Sea has a tough character to peg down. She plays a pre-op transgender who decides to remain female but takes hormones and identifies male. There was some great tension between her and a character who had cancer and had to have a mastectomy (cosmetic vs necessary). There was also some great tension when she first showed up because she was a poor kid from a small hick town and then she shows up among these upper-class L.A. lesbians. And of course there's the tension that she causes just by being a transgender (which was interestingly portrayed as equally awkward for the gay characters as it was for the straights).

Lang did barely a few days and mostly talked to Dali about the sequence. Neither controlled the final one, although you can see the influence with Lang's clocks and Dali's Persistence of Memory. The important part may be the link to Basevi who, of course, 3 years later can be found doing the art direction on Spellbound.

Roadhouse - Lupino aged so much in so short a time and you can hear the drink in the voice 2. Stunning performance, although Widmark owns the last 1/3rd.

    The Office: apples and oranges

    by necgray

I don't think comparisons are really fair anymore. In the first season of the US Office comparisons were apt because several of the same storylines were going on. But the show has changed dramatically since then and become a totally different beast. The UK Office was a brilliant and scathing satire on cube farms. The US Office has become a brilliant cartoon that happens to take place in a cube farm.

I couple of months ago I caught it late at night on HD cable and outright fell in love with it. It's rare that I do a sudden 180 on a movie like that (at least from bad to good) but once I got over that it wasn't what I expected I had a great time watching it... and yes the final battle which seemed nonsensical on screen plays great on a smaller scale.

    by bottombrick

Too bad that box art is going off on some crazy fucking tangent that is going to mislead people. The movie is slow paced and realistic in its portrayal of human relations, until the climax kicks your fucking ass as Clint goes against the entire police force and mob and grinds some piece of shit heap of steel through ten minutes of lead bombardment to deliver his witness.

    by bottombrick

With stuff like Unforgiven and The Good, the Bad, the Ugly so deeply embedded in the geek hive mind this movie has the potential to kinda sneak up on ya, but the charm of how mundane his character is is what makes him simply doing his duty work in the context of the film, and packaging it like he's some superhero badass pretty much pisses all over that.

    by deanbarry

Which is great, cause I really dig the show. For all it's faults, it does one thing really well. ENTERTAIN! I have the first two seasons on boxset and plan on getting S3 as soon as it hits the shelves. It starts of good and gets better with every season as it expands and explores the universe the Winchester boys inhabit. Good monster mashing fun. Tounge in cheek and rocking soundtrack. Check it out ead Geek. Oh...and I am tickled pink that Harry Did A FIRST Post, lol.

In my opinion the show just gets better and better with each new season, the first season is mainly all stand alone episodes but builds the great characters & has some cool horror episodes, when it gets to the 2nd & 3rd season we get a proper story arc and less stand alones, cant wait for S4...

I think it's a real shame that so many of the *intended* audience for Supernatural seem to be too cynical to even give it a try. The show was made for horror fans, and it seems like everyone in the cast and crew love working on it, and really believe in it. It seems the most vocal part of the fandom, on the internet, are women in their 20s, 30s and 40s. I'm sure part of that is due to the leads being attractive, but if that were the only reason, we wouldn't keep watching. The reason I can't talk more of my friends and acquaintances into watching is because it's too gory and gross for them. I'd like to see more people watching it because it could use better ratings, sure. But I really think a lot of people are missing out on a show that they could really get into if they'd give it a chance.
I wonder why people think if someone takes the time and trouble to explain why they like something, that they must be a studio plant? Harry seemed to be asking for opinions on whether *he* might like it, and that's what some of us were responding to.

    Supernatural a quality show because it's self-aware.

    by timetravelingbunny

Remember the more comical episodes of the X-Files ("Bad Blood" for example)? Now take that tone and make an entire series like that, all while spinning a rather mature mythology.

Just watch "Very Special" Christmas episode. Or the time-warp episode where the joke is that they acknowledge that "it's just like the movie Groundhog Day" repeatedly.

Anyone who say this show is for preteen girls because the two lead characters are young guys, is an idiot.

Anyone who automatically dismisses this show because the two lead characters are young guys is also an idiot.

Don't dismiss this show until you give it a fair chance.

Sam: "You need to update you cassette tape collection."
    Dean: "Why?"
Sam: "For one, it's all 80's hair metal, and two, it's a cassette tape collection!"

and the grenade-thingy that shot spikes in midair. Other than that, not a heck of lot to recommend. But not a heck of a lot on Chuck Russell's resume is there?Regarding The Enforcer, that Franzetta is the original poster artwork, and no, the movie doesn't come close to that coolness, but they had to spend a fortune on squibs for that movie.I like Eastwood's pulp period with this and Firefox and The Eiger Sanction, before he got all social and serious. First, perhaps my use of "brilliant" was a bit too much. However, I thought the Sandman origin was brilliant and the venom origin was interesting. I also liked Topher's Brock, although it departed from the source material. All the scenes you cited were rubbish, I agree. I also think the fight scene in Harry's apartment was wrong on a number of levels. I guess, because I saw it a few months after it came out, and my expectations had been so low based upon response, I may have appreciated it more than I would have if I had seen it opening weekend.

    by toby___wong

Harry. Watch that show. It's made for you. Watch it from the beginning. It starts slow but then it will seriously kick your ass. Accept it from the one who knows.
Anyone complaining here that Supernatural is for teeny girls definitely has not watched the show and is just blabbering away. Really pathetic. It's as if Dean took their girlfriends. Oh, I forgot, they don't have one.
This is a show for anyone except scared little kids. Dean is one of the best characters ever seen on television. He is the original American badass.
The show contains awesome characters, good stories, action, horror, a wonderful rock soundtrack, an awesome car and very cool evil spirits and shit. Angel and Buffy got nothing on Supernatural. Angel, which is seriously awesome, surpassed Buffy and Supernatural surpassed Angel. The Shield and Supernatural are the 2 best shows on television. Accept it from the one who knows.

Harry, in regards to Black Mask DVD

    by dougmckenzie

It is more than likely that Lionsgate did not purchase rights to the Mandarin or Cantonese dubs, rather than just failing to include them. Maybe cost vs. benefit was weighed and it came up tits. Also in regards to Supernatural, the writing is good, they really dig deep to come up with the monster of the week. It isn't too serialized with only 4-5 eps a year devoted exclusively, to the ongoing arc. Acting, as with any tv show heavily relying on guest actors, is very very hit or miss. Production values are average.

    Supernatural's Pros/Cons

    by the heathen

Overall, I like it. The pilot was really good, but after that the next 10 or so episodes were super average, even with Amy Acker appearing, etc. However, by the end of the first season I caught up with my DVR and the show quit being one that I'd watch while I read or cleaned, etc.

What's different about Supernatural is that it's actually gotten better progressively as it goes on. I guess it does have it's own little mythology and I like the inclusion of their being more "hunters" than just these two Winchester brothers.

What really makes the show entertaining is the supporting cast, especially the villains and the feeling of "nobody is safe" because they've offed a couple of characters that really had great potential, but I guess that's why them dying works. Also, Bobby is kinda awesome.

I think in the third season they had a few eps like the "Ghost Facers" documentary/Ghost Hunters type of show that was clever and so was the horror movie ep. The third season also had some pretty gory stuff for network tv. That's always nice.

I don't watch the show in HD, but wish I could (does CW even broadcast in HD?)because the blacks are really really dark in a lot of epsiodes and it has a muted look that bugs me visually.

All in all, if you get past the kinks of the first half of the season, I'd say it's worth checking out. Far from the best thing on tv, but also far from the worst. I think it's around the number 14 or 15 spot on the DVR list if that helps.

Oh, and Transformers is still a bad movie. Sorry. I agree with everything Vern said about it.

Even though it skews a little young on the dialog, it hits all of its marks as a MARVEL Universe release. It was cool to see Tony Stark get old and I absolutely agree that the characterization of Bruce Banner as a paranoid hermit living in the desert in fear of his inner monster was a great invention. The kids were portrayed as kids, smart, stupid, funny, moody, confident and scared at all the right moments. LOVED Torunn, daughter of Thor. Wasn't sure if Azari was the son of Black Panther and STORM but it sure looked that way to me. But most importantly, I GOT TO SEE ULTRON!!! Ultron is the most intense of all the Avengers Rogue Gallery and seeing him talk and move for the first time was a real thrill.

    FIND ME MY RED SUN!!!

    ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD!!

Outbreak "...one of the less nonsensical ones"

    by big jim

Meaning not AS nonsensical as most. The disease would, among other things, in its later stages liquify your intestines. Nice that the antidote, when given to someone in the final stages of the disease, completely reverses the effects.
