Tarantino Has Found His Jew Hunter!!
I am – Hercules!!
Quentin Tarantino's "The Jew Hunter," Hans Landa, will be played by 51-year-old German TV actor Christoph Waltz.
German movie star Bridget Von Hammersmark will be played not by 48-year-old German movie star Nasstasja Kinski (said to have been in talks for the role) but by 32-year-old German movie star Diane Kruger ("Troy," the "National Treasure" movies).
Landa is the chief villain of "Inglorious Bastards," a diabolical Nazi colonel who demonstrates a useful knack for sniffing out hiding Jews in Axis-occupied Europe.
Paul Rust, who played "Wheelchair Darren" in February's Will Ferrell vehicle "Semi-Pro," has also joined the cast, which includes Brad Pitt, Mike Myers, B.J. Novak, Samm Levine, Eli Roth and German-born Michael Fassbender ("300").
Fassbender will inherit the role of British officer Archie Hicox, at different times intended for Tim Roth and Simon Pegg.
With shooting set to begin in less than seven weeks, roles yet uncast include Shoshanna Dreyfus (the movie's Natalie Portman-esque lead Jewess), her projectionist friend Marcel, the German-born maniac Bastard Stiglitz and the wily Gestapo major Deiter Hellstrom.

not excited about Diane Kruger, but the german actor could be good
-
seems like a good cast
-
owes me for Deathproof. Screw that film.
-
Diane Kruger not so much.
-
which was a lot
-
Hasn't blown me away acting-wise. Come to think of it, she hasn't blown me in any way at all.
Fuck this movie. -
convinces me Roger Avary was the brains behind that masterpiece
-
... is at least hot...
-
the inclusion of Brad Pitt, his droning monotonistic voice and bland acting moved this squarely into my do not see list
-
...or M.Night Shamalamadingdong.Who finally gets to prove the Law of Diminishing Returns first?
-
Something tells me, this is gonna be QT's last gasp to prove himself. Dogs was good, but is overrated by a lot of people. Pulp was great and there really is no denying it. Four Rooms was horrible. Jackie Brown wasn't as great as people make it out to be. And Kill Bill was great, until Part 2 came out. And don't even get me started on Death Proof.
So now you have, in my opinion, one last chance for redemption. Casting Pitt is was good choice because he seems to always deliver the goods. The ball is in your court Quentin, don't fuck it up. -
M.Night has already won due to the fact he is a more prolific film maker
-
I guess that vodka don't drink itself...
-
...puts it like I would do if I were eloquent...Dogs - Awesome. Pulp - Beyond Awesome. Jackie - Average. Four Rooms - Poor. KB1 - Average. KB2 - Poor. Death Proof - Poor.Methinks the boy doth need a hit...I'm praying it's Inglorious Bastards!
-
He taints the whole fucking thing
-
Major finger trouble - apologies!. Was going to say 'Melvin - agree wholeheartedly'. Night is now a hack - or close to...

The Happening.. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! Damn that was funny
-
1. Reservoir Dogs 2. Pulp Fiction 3. Jackie Brown 4. Kill Bill Vol 2 (despite the fact it went on about 15 mins too long) 5. Kill Bill Vol 1 6. Death Proof
-
Strange review, infighting by AICN staffers, and the subject matter is more interesting.

The finder of those who practice the religion known as Judaism!

I mean, Diane Kruger in a Tarantino film??!! He should have got Alexandra Maria Lara for the part.
-
1. Both Kill Bills viewed as one 2. Pulp Fiction 3. Reservoir Dogs 4. Death Proof 5. Jackie Brown
-
You crazy, man. Putting DEATH PROOF above JACKIE BROWN?

Natalie Portman character type is a LEAD JEWESS
by dannyglovers_dickblood
hahahaha. I can hear Joel Silver now, "You know who we need opposite V? Some kinda LEAD JEWESS!!"
-
KILL BILL was a fucking masterpiece! I rank KB right up there with REZ DOGS, PULP and TRUE ROMANCE. And INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is a great, ass-kicking script that's gonna have all you haters eating QT's shit right from his ass. Sure, DEATH PROOF wasn't all that, but give the man a chance to bounce back. Damn all you haters who've got nothing better to do than troll in mommy's basement and whack off on the toilet! Faggots! -
Desperate and aggressive. Get over it son....he lost whatever he used to have.
-
Put lots of emphasis on the "ess." JewESS! Actually I saw an episode of CRIMINAL INTENT with Thomas "Windows" Waites and he played this anti-Semite and at the end he finds out his wife was Jewish and he starts yelling at his daughter, "You are NOT a JewESS! You are NOT a JewESS!"
-
At least he had something to lose. Unlike that Lucas guy who it turns out never had it to begin with.
-
Honestly just give up on this movie guys. Its going to stink. I can't believe I used to be a diehard Tarantino fanboy, its so embarassing when you think about it.
He's not even close to as good as other 90's directors such as Fincher and PTA. -
Really? Well hey, it won't take much to subdue Pitt and the Dorkass Crew.
-
I think you mean "Dieter" as there is no name "Deiter" in germany. Diane "Kruger" (i'm quite sure she changed her name from "Krüger" btw) is of course boring as an actress and beautywise also.Helena my ass!
-
I think that's a little unfair. I think it's a well-known fact film critics are gigantic elitist snots. I don't give a shit what those fucks have to say. I prefer to trust my own peepers (that's slang for eyeballs, case you youngsters were wondering ["youngster" is a term for young people]). I like Tarantinos earlier shit. RESERVOIR DOGS, PULP FICTION, JACKIE BROWN. KILL BILL was great the first dozen times but I find that the more I watch those movies the more irritating they become. Maybe that's just me. DEATH PROOF really was fucking terrible, though. Don't even try to justify that piece of shit to me. Okay, that was uncalled for. If you like DEATH PROOF that's cool (although you never mentioned liking it in your post). I thought it was an uneventful shitpile and Rosario Dawson is fucking terrible. Kurt Russell was great. He should've gotten more than fifteen minutes of screen time.
-
Tarantino is the most important director of the past 20 years. Like him or not, he's made the single biggest movie of the 1990's and there's no denying his massive impact on popular culture
-
Every movie needs Bruno Ganz as Hitler
-
Well argued!!
-
It's the only film of Tarantino's that felt populated with actual characters instead of just archetypes borrowed from other movies. Sure, he's a collage artist, but a pretty good one nonetheless.
-
Has anyone here ever been hit by a car? Or know somebody who got hit by a drunk driver and died? I know that seems rather unlikely, but at the time in my life when I saw it, I had recently gone through both of these experiences and Death Proof was the ultimate edge of my seat movie at the time. Real risk of death with real stunts, an amazingly deplorable villain, and badass protagonists who weren't afraid to kick the living shit out of him. Death Proof is a feel good movie for me. I admit it has it's flaws, but I was just felt so connected with the characters, I couldn't help but love it. Death Proof certainly is a tough nut to crack, half the people love it. The other half hate it (not counting QT haters) At the very least, it will stand as an eternal curiosity.
-
Maybe that's why Jackie Brown is mildly forgotten. Good point, rbatty. I like the movie. I've just never been crazy about it.
-
Always felt very stagy and forced to me. The dialogue wasn't stylized in that. It was just fake. Death Proof often had the same problem.

Ashok0 -- Fuck you....personal preference, QT sucks ass.
by dannyglovers_dickblood
I've never enjoyed a single frame of film he has shot. He is gimmick after gimmick after gimmick. He has never put one character on screen I could give a fuck about. I'm not cool or elite. I like some of the worst fucking films ever made....why? Because they are fun. There is nothing fun about QT films to me. So keep waving Oscars and IMDB ratings, and all the fucking horse shit in my face. I didn't like Pulp Fiction, the day I fucking saw it. This is not a me being cool on Aint it cool bullshit. I can give a fuck how I come off on this site.
-
As heated as things ever get on AICN, at least we do better than IMDB. Those guys always hate gay people and women and jews.

If you wanna know what kinda shit I'm into then check out the CoC's daily conversations, Monday-Friday. We're always the #1 TB. Thats how you find us.

How does it turn out Lucas never had it to begin with? THX is a fucking science fiction masterpiece. American Graffiti is a great great little film. And the dude created two of the most beloved franchises our culture knows. I admit, he did become a shit director in his later years.....but the statement, "He never had it to begin with," is just fucking asinine.
-
...and one final note: Fuck Tarantino.
-
What exactly is CoC anyway? I can't find it anywhere.
-
.. is Austrian. ;)
-
Killing Zoe: 41% positive
Rules of Engagement: 43% positive
FYI, Avary didn't direct a minute and didn't write a word of dialogue for Pulp Fiction. He contributed the rough story for the Bruce Willis segment. -
I haven't seen True Romance, but the rest of his movies don't seem that great. After QT, his best work is probably Beowulf, which was good, not great.
-
Christoph Waltz is a fantastic actor. I enjoy his work everytime he's on screen. For those who are not familiar with his work i can tell you he's gonna own this movie. He will be the brutally calculating menacing bastard the role (as written in the script) needs him to be.
-
Neil Gaiman wrote all the good parts.
-
..but I ussed him down to 5.
Oh Family Guy, on occasion you do hit one out the park. -
Fuck off.
-
My bad for not including the requisite sarcastic emoticon after, that was supposed to be facetious.
-
Anyone who thinks Tarintino hasn't produced anything good lately is a douche. Kill Bill 1 kicked ass. Jackie Brown wasn't typical Tarintino, but if u like subtlety its a good flick. Some of the dialogue scenes in Deathproof were long-winded and stupid, but outside of that it was good flick. Maybe u had to grow up in the grindhouse era to really appreciate it.
-
Anyone who thinks it sucked is a fucking moron. That is all.
-
Third grade concept, even by Grindhouse standards, this'll tank.
-
That post by Ashok0 is retarded. He quotes movie ratings from imdb and rotten tomatoes. What a fuckin sheep. BAAAhhh. The main thing I like about AICN bloggers is their nerd like obsessions with certain films, comics or books. They can think for themselves and don't have to like something just cause its popular and everyone else likes it. So many good tv shows like Deadwood and Rome have been canceled because the avg. tv viewer was too dumb to watch. Long live the AICN talkbackererer!! They happen to be wrong about Tarintino, because he's great, but I like his movies because their good not because some sellout critic at Rotten Tomatoes says so.
-
I've found a new found respect for you of late but you're flat out fucking WRONG about QT. He;s a brilliant director who changed flm for the better through his sheer vision. That said he has shitty taste in finding new "talent" (hack Eli Roth) and I have no desire to see yet another tired Jewish centric WWII film, even by QT.
-
tell that to McDonalds or the studios that bring you films like Meet the Spartans or Moulin Rouge
-
... that torture fanatic Quentin Tarantino. And fuck his "Jewish revenge movie".
I want David Schwimmer and Natalie Portman to star in a thoughtful Jewish revenge movie. Seriously. I don't want Tarantino to fill the screen with bleeding German soldiers. And make his chraracters spit on the German soldiers bones.
Whoever cassts Eli fucking Roth should be boycotted forever! -
And I certainly don't hate Tarantino at all.
Dogs and Fiction are superb Movies. The rest I find average to fairly good.
But the never ending features on this film are really beginning to make me wonder just what it is that's so "special" about this movie. The script must be extraordinary but that doesn't guarantee a brilliant film. -
Most people who (pretenedt to have) read the script said it's bollocks.
-
Seriousy? you're comparing a wonderufl piece of art like Moulin Rouge to Meet the Fucking Spartans? Fuck you.
-
Stormare for Deiter!!!
-
"the movie's Natalie Portman-esque lead Jewess" Nice one. She's never really celebrated her Jewish heritage on film before. And I know she's fluent in Hebrew and is really committed to Judaism. So maybe this is her chance to represent.
-
might have been to cast Mel Gibson.
-
with the exception of brad pitt.I put my trust in qt i think he will make a great film
-
What? No news on this:
10/26 Austin, TX Alamo Drafthouse - Black Curtain screening/premiere

http://tinyurl.com/6btthz -
Glad to see Pitt on board. Also, I'm glad that DiCaprio isn't actually playing Landa, always thought he was too young for that role. However, I think Diane Kruger is a perfect choice to play the German actress/operative. Yes, Natalie Portman would be great casting for Shoshanna/Shosanna; let's hope QT can get her. -
I'm sure I'm quite behind on the Bastard front and this has already been explained away, but... why isn't he in it anymore?
-
Honestly though: I am sick of hearing about this movie on here. Give it a rest. Thank you.
-
Dark Knight is higher than Pulp Fiction on there, so that says it all.
-
Rez Dogs, True Romance, Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers, From Dusk Till Dawn. He wrote or had a hand in writing all of those. Most writers/directors can't even do one great film and QT was involved with 5. And he directed Res Dogs and Pulp Fiction, the latter being the best movie of the last 20 or 30 years. So yeah, he is the way Woody Allen is...way past his prime and it's ok to say his current stuff is kinda sucky as long as you don't deny his earlier brilliance and genius.
-
Kinda late on this but fuck it. Anyway, by Tarantino's early films I mean pre-KILL BILL when he decided to say, "Fuck it, I'm done making real movies. I'm just gonna throw a thousand different other movies together." Okay, so one film isn't really setting a trend, but then DEATH PROOF rolls around. Yeah, it's not meant to be taken as a "real" movie. It's a vanity project, but still the guy could at least make an effort to make a decent film. If this is supposed to be a nod or homage or tribute to the drive-ins then make a fucking drive-in movie. Don't make FOUR GIRLS SIT AROUND A TABLE TALKING ABOUT STUPID SHIT AND ALSO THERE MIGHT BE A DEATH OR TWO (WHO KNOWS ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN, RIGHT?).
So I don't have real high hopes for this one. What the fuck is this anyway? Tarantino's take on an Italian film that was basically THE DIRTY DOZEN? Doesn't really blow my skirt up, but I'll give it a shot. -
"Death Proof...'Rosario Dawson is fucking terrible'??. Did you not see the look on Abernathy's face when she realised the joy her two gear head friends shared, and that she was now a part of it?."
Yeah, it was the same dumbass look she's always got on her face. I've never liked Rosario Dawson. I think she's a shit actress and she irritates the fuck out of me.
But I know a lot of people like her, so it's no sweat off my sack. -
I love AMERICAN GRAFFITI. I think it's the best thing Lucas ever did. And like STAR WARS he had people with actual talent re-writing his shitty screenplays until they were good. Just look at the new STAR WARS pictures. Fucking hack oversaw every aspect of those films. Lucas wrote them himself and they're fucking terrible. Where's Lawrence Kasdan when you need him?
(answer: he was busy making DREAMCATCHER) -
We need more shit like David Schwimmer taking out Nazis. UPRISING like a motherfucker!
-
was yet another as it/before it happens QT update. At this rate there will be more QT talkbacks than there are pages in the fuckin script.
-
RD was good...Loved Pulp(who doesn't) and Jackie has the best characters of any QT film. However around the time of KB1, which was a fun watch even if it is a PALE whitebread imitation of real HK cinema, QT stopped being a director and became QT "personality/celebrity coke snorting douche". KB2 sucked the fun out of part 1...and DP is damned near deserving a razzie. All because QT got lazy, got full of his own shit, and developed a cadre of people all too willing to give him a sloppy wet rim job in return for access and boons.
-
She is a Jew and she is the second most beautiful woman in the world after Uma.
-
AND our hitler is jean claude van damme
-
No, just kidding. I watch all his films, as a rule. I may not like them (KBV2, DP) but I give them a day in court. PS: Jackie Brown is an excellent flick. The AK-47 dialogue alone was worth the price of admission.
-
this is going to be a fantastic movie. all the assumptions you are making are dipshit. all the negativity, all the silly anti tarantino angst...dipshit. this is going to be a fucktastically cuntgoblinally ricockulously great film.
-
Would be a lot cooler if it was a Blade-type dude with a crossbow who hunts and kills Jews. Then, for his death scene, he could have his head imploded by the Ark of the Covenant while laughing maniacally as his face melts. Wait, damn, have I just written the whole movie?!
-
we've been working on in the zone. wesley snipes' jewish robothanded asskicker vs mickey roarke's steelhanded nazi.
-
is that she has a nice body. She isn't that pretty and she's a bad actress. Personally I can't see what QT sees in her. He's usually got a good eye for casting.
-
honestly guys, think about it. is uma thurman EVER a good actress when she's not in a QT directed movie???? FUCK no! and that goes double when she's paired with ben "ironically not as good an actor as my lesser known younger brother" affleck. Q dog can bring out the performances that he needs. travolta was the fucking dude from look who's talking before pulp fiction for christ's sake.

misrepresentative. Having read the script, this film is mostly about Shoshanna's character and her plot to kill a bunch of Nazis. There is VERY little Bastards, just at the very beginning and then at the end. This film is not going to kick ass. You're getting yourself all worked up and you're just going to get let down. Locate the script online, read it, and tell me I'm wrong.

Choice than DiCaprio. I mean, this guy probably actually fits the casting.

A LOT of people are like, "Yeah, Kill Bill was good, until Part 2". You guys are obviously entitled to your opinion, but Kill Bill 2 is great, and if either of the two were to receive any Oscar nominations, it would have been 2. Why do you people hate it? Because it's heavily less action packed than part 1? That's kind of the point. It's a character study of Bill and The Bride (which is prety obvious from the opening scene). But the film definitely delivers, and you get to see that each of these killers aren't 1-dimensional characters after all, like the first film makes you think. Uma's acting here is fucking phenomenal, and in spite of 2 being less action-packed, it's still got a ton of wonderful action pieces. Such as Uma fucking CLAWING HERSELF out of a grave, as L'Arena slowly culminates in the background. I can understand people not liking Kill Bill 2 because it IS different from Part 1, but that's the point, and it's definitely not a fault. Guess what, I'm pretty sure I prefer Part 2.
-
Having read the script, I thought it was interesting, if undercooked (far too many characters, far too little background or time spent on those characters).
However looking at his casting choices, Tarantino had better make this look visually stunning, or else it's gonna be less The Dirty Dozen, more The Dirty Dozen: The Fatal Mission.
And at least that had Ernie Hudson... -
...I thought Deathproof was horrible also, but despite some miscues QT has given us some of the some of the most different, daring, off-the-wall, nonconformist mainstream (and I emphasize MAINSTREAM) films in the last decaded. We could do a lot worse than another Jackie Brown/Kill Bill-esque type film At least the guy is taking some chances. Let's give him some benefit on this movie.
-
Quentin is always good at casting, besides that Eli R. is in it, I congrat him for choosing Waltz and Kruger. Waltz is good creepy and I see him already as Landa. Diane Kruger is also perfect. Thumbs up, hombre.
-
just checked Christoph Waltz's resume. He was at the Max Reinhardt school in vienna, and that is as top-notch as it gets. He's got a accent and lisps sometimes. He will be the new man "you love to hate".

That movie was Terrible
-
Actually the best casting information about the movie yet. That guy is really awesome playing silent and calm psychos. I wonder how Tarantino got to him...
-
As one of them, I feel like a father who's disappointed in his son. I had high hopes for him. I want him to succeed. I want him to build on the brilliance of his earlier work. But he doesn't. He had so much potential and he squandered it. Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction are amongst my favorite movies ever. And I loved Jackie Brown, which I thought, flaws aside, showed a lot of growth and maturity in his filmmaking without sacrificing his trademark-style.Then he decided he wanted to be a B-movie exploitation king.Sigh.
God bless him, I'm sure there a lot of people that aspire to that level of filmmaking. But we expect that from the Paul Anderson's of the world, not the Quentin Tarantino's. QT's Oscar days are behind him, his chance to be a great director...a Scorcese or P.T. Anderson or Coen Brothers or Spielberg. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like his movies (although they have been consistently worse and worse...simpler and simpler) and he has yet to reach the depths of faded glory that DePalma or Coppola have sunk to. His movies are still coherent and entertaining for what they are. But they should be better. He's a a talented chef cooking hamburgers every night. Tasty, delicious hamburgers...but he's playing it safe and staying in his wheelhouse, not daring to be creative anymore. Maybe, like Scorcese, he will find material to re-energize himself and have a creative comeback to once again be the QT that he was and reach the heights we thought he would. I think a lot of us thought this movie was going to be it. It will not be. I'm sure he'll make it entertaining enough, he has the talent for that, but it won't be a movie that people will remember or praise or look back fondly on like Pulp Fiction. And that's why the "elitists" sadly shake their head at QT, not because he's terrible, but because he's just very good. And he should be exceptional. -
I don't know how you all will feel after I say this but, honestly, there is no such thing as a film Quentin Tarantino "should" make. Quentin Tarantino's career and his oeuvre are precisely that, HIS career and HIS oeuvre. If he wants to make B films then he has every right to. You should go to the movies to see Quentin Tarantino's latest work, not so Quentin Tarantino's latest work can see you and entertain you for 2 hours. A movie is not a jester. "And that's why elitists sadly shake their head at QT, not because he's terrible but because he's just very good. And he should be exceptional." You know what? To all the elitists that do that, welcome to a new generation. Tarantino is exceptional.
1) Pulp Fiction
2) Jackie Brown
3) Kill Bill
4) Death Proof
5) Reservoir Dogs -
...is people just have to accept that he's a talented magpie and nothing more. All that talk of him being the new Scorsese around the time of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction was (with the benefit of hindsight) preposterous hyperbole, and I think you have to let all of that nonsense go if you want to enjoy what he does. And what he does is make very well executed mega-mix homages (aka rip-offs) of all the B-movie stuff he liked back when he first started being an adolescent. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Let him get in with with it, and let's all look forward to commenting on this new film and how much it owes to The Big Red One when it comes out.
-
...they aren't 12 anymore and his shtick of copying scenes from exploitation movies and pair it with overlong, wannabe-cool nonsense dialogue got old and annoying.
Kill Bill 2 had many great moments, but I just couldn't stop thinking "I wonder where he stole that one from" and after the bride escaped from the grave, nothing interesting happened. Just the usual blabla. She meets Bill, finds her daughter alive and we get a 5 minutes monologue about Superman? Please. -
You don't really think Kill Bill and Death proof are better than Reservoir Dogs do you?
-
"Lucas never had it to begin with" - One of the silliest things i've ever read on here. And i've read a LOT of silly stuff.
-
What happened to Inglorious being an old school super cast with Stallone, Willis etc??
I'm sure he knows what he's doing, but I kind of miss the over the top casting idea. -
I'm not going to join the fray on this one. It's hip to hate Tarantino, but I have liked all of his movie. I'm sure the QT haters will say that it must be because I'm so retarded that I'm not even cognizant of the shit in front of me, because every frame of celluloid committed to QT is part of a larger holocaust. (See what I did there?)
-
The truth is QT's movies have merely been average since Pulp. And it's not so much hate, as it's the lathering people have for his next movie. He's pigeonhold himself into his own stereotype, like Tim Burton and Kevin Smith. He tried to break out of that mold with Death Proof and failed miserably. Look what happened with Burton's Planet of the Apes and Smith's Jersey Girl. Both of those films were different then what both had delivered in the past, and those films were horrible. What's a QT film: snappy dialogue and outrageous violence. If it works for him, then so be it. But if you continue making the same type of film time after time, then you better bring your 'A' game because everything you make will be compared to your masterpiece, which in QT's case was Pulp.
-
I'm SOOO glad to hear Eli Roth will be appearing in this. He lights up the screen the way a black hole lights up outer space.
Wadda guy! -
See, it's cool to hate on Tarantino these days. It's cool to be the armchair director/writer, pointing out how you could do this better, or that better, but you still live at mom's and work your job at the local bookstore or coffeeshop. Don't you fanboys realize how much you're all like sheep? I'd say you're with the MAJORITY on AICN now, if you hate Tarantino. Saying you hate him makes you stand out as having an elitist sensibility, and not falling for all that Hollywood hype -- you're above all that! But don't you see how it's so much cooler to stand up here, in AICN, and say, "waitaminit, guys, QT's voice is still amazingly brilliant and his visuals are as stunning as they've ever been, what's with all the hate?" In my opinion, KILL BILL was genius and took all the elements of the Hong Kong revenge films and made them fresh, relevant and exhilarating again. Jackie Brown was a love letter written to 70s Blaxploitation cinema, and Pulp Fiction was the cinematic equivalent of a heroin rush. INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, the script, ratchets up QT's love of cinema to a whole new level. Is it as good as PULP or REZ DOGS? Probably not. But the characters and situations wrangle old, worn cinematic tropes into fresh, relevant, exhilarating set pieces. When was the last time you saw a group of Nazi's in a bar practicing spit takes in honor of one of their most treasured actresses? All of it in service to the internal drama of the scene, all of it brilliantly layered in there as ballast to ground the scene in the everyday with our humanity peeking around the edges -- just before QT drops the hammer on you and turns the scene into a bloody, pulpy, piece of cinematic vengeance? Fucking amazing stuff. Is Tarantino the best writer in Hollywood? Imo, no, but he's up there. At this point, I personally think that Tony Gilroy - MICHAEL CLAYTON - is the best writer in La La land. But is Quentin Tarantino still kinetically, electrically relevant? Fuck yes. So, have at it, Fanboy Sheep!
-
What happened to Tarantino's ability to put together a great ensemble? Pulp Fiction had Travolta, Thurman, Jackson, Willis, Roth, Rames and Keitel. Besides Pitt, this has Novak, Levine, Waltz, Rust, Fassbender, Roth? Who?
-
To have love for QT again, but the fact is there hasn't been anything, in my opinion, that he has done that lives up to the quality of Pulp. Kill Bill started off great, then Part 2 came out and it was downhill from there. And again, Jackie Brown was alright, but not the masterpiece some people want it to be.
-
It's just sounding more and more lame with each leak regarding the casting - and i LOVE Tarantino's previous.
-
I suppose you could make an argument for THX. I haven't seen the whole thing and I was watching the director's cut unfortunately so the shitty CGI was a little distracting and I can't say how I feel about it yet. The best shit Lucas ever did he had help or at least input from more talented people. Guy can't write worth shit and he's a lousy director. He throws it all together in the editing room and "fixes" everything with the computer machines later. They had to digitally add a hand in ATTACK OF THE CLONES so Hayden Christensen could stroke Natalie Portman. Jesus Christ, you'd think that's something you could do live on the set with living actors but I guess not.
-
I'll give you that.
-
Every director succeeds or fails based on their last movie. I am a Coen fanatic, but I was ready to write them off after first Intolerable Cruelty and then Ladykillers, when they redeemed themselves. QT is coming off Death Proof which I PERSONALLY thought was lame (you can say whatever you want). But with every casting announcement, this sounds lamer and lamer. I hate to get political, but this is like McCain's Vice Presidential pick.
-
Am I a Coens whore?
-
No, you're not a Coens whore, you just have a very weird sense of humour (actually, I did like Ladykillers a bit partly because I think Tom Hanks should do more comedy.) But they were definitely lesser efforts, and I had a hard time rationalizing them compared with Lebowski or Fargo. I don't consider myself a QT "hater", but this is an awful lot like people waiting for Chinese Democracy (I'm sure I can come up with more analagies). At some point, you have to admit that your idols are not perfect.
-
i agree on Avery and "pulp fiction" - for proof see "killing zoe"
-
"shoshana dreyfus"? cross jerry seinfelds old girlfriend (shoshana lonstein) with julia louise dreyfus - is qt a seinfeld fan - "bastard stiglitz"? and "hellstrom"? - is there ging to be a "baron von zipper"?
-
you sound like the sheep - "rez dogs"? - harry started a stupid trend - i like qt movies as much as the next guy - but he dropped the ball a few times in favor of the pull of celebrity - his name/stamp is more of a draw now than the movies theyre on - i hated death proof - i didnt want to - i saw its potential - and every scene with russell is gold - but for a grind-house movie (and just movie) it failed me - all the inside jokes and references rang phony and calculated - he made it for the sheep you were referring to - his blind fans - he put in all the junk he thought theyd like and connect to - even a long scene devoted to the procurement of a copy of italian vogue (wtf) - the movie shouda been 90 minutes of russell killing chicks and evading the cops - all separated by car insane chases and monologues (by russell not the cast of rent) - so now the king of movies wants to make his homage to the ww2 action movie - lets see who he panders to now - i saw the original "inglorious bastards" - its crap - and this is his inspiration - not "dirty dozen" - which, if youve seen it, is way more "qt" than the original "bastards"
-
with "no country for old men" - that movie is the genetic successor to "resevoir dogs" "pulp fiction" and "jackie brown" - all of their strengths and none of their weaknesses - i expect as much out of qt - hes to busy pimping the hostel guy and his crap torture franchise

PSJ: There is such a thing as a film directors "should" make.
by executor
Saying that that it's his career and we should lap up whatever film he (or any other director) decides to make is just wrong. There IS such a thing as sinking below your talent level. If Spielberg made House Bunny or Peter Jackson directed Death Race or Shyamalan did Lady in the Water (lol) everyone should rightly say what the fuck?!?!?! Maybe it would be cool as a one-off thing if Jackson did something like a Death Race, a great director tackling B or C-level genre work like that, but if that's all he ever aspired to do again, if that's all he ever made again, we would be disappointed. As we are with QT.
-
...we saw a group of people having discussions about movies and clowning around... All of it in service to the internal drama of the scene, all of it brilliantly layered in there as ballast to ground the scene in the everyday with our humanity peeking around the edges -- just before QT drops the hammer and turns the scene into a bloody, pulpy, piece of cinematic vengeance?
How about in EVERY FUCKING QT MOVIE. So...yawn. -
Why put a value on what a film is about? In the words of Roger Ebert, "Judge a film not on what it is about, but how it is about it." Maybe a good movie could have been out of the general idea of House Bunny - a funny satire or college sex romp. I mean, some of the most serious, high-minded movies of all-time have smelled like a homeless guy's balls (Haggis's Crash anyone?). Trash/exploitation can be great, and Tarantino does it better than almost anyone working today, no matter what the cool kids say.
-
concerns me. Of course, there are bad cameros in great movies (Branagh's Hamlet and Malick's The Thin Red Line come to mind), but I can't imagine Myers toning it down for anybody, anytime.
-
"You a big William Hung fan?"
-
Why didn't QT think of that?

FOR ME TO POOP ON

That's usually my stock answer when I'm asked which QT flick is my favorite. I know a lot of people who don't get Quentin. I attribute this to me being an undercover geek and them being "normal." Quentin is not "normal." He lives inside his own head, as do many of we cinephiles. So when I say that it's always Quentin's last movie that is my favorite, I mean that this particular human being speaks my language, and every few years I get to speak it with him via cinema. It's not like talking to God, but it is other-worldly to a large degree... for me. That's a pretty great experience when 90% of what's out there doesn't speak to me at all. Did I enjoy Dogs, Pulp, Jackie and the Kill Bills -- YES I DID. And still do. But let me say this; Death Proof is a masterpiece. I'll tell you why in a minute. Most people who saw Grindhouse in the theater preferred Planet Terror. That's perfectly understandable. At the time, so did I. It's a rare thing to see a double feature presented that way (trailers and all) in this day and age. I've been around a long time and still couldn't remember what that really felt like in it's day. I couldn't explain to close friends why this Grindhouse thing that QT and RR put together was great; I just knew that it was. I held off buying the DVD's as seperate extended features for nearly a year after they were available. This was because I wanted that exact Grindhouse experience again and nothing else. No extended Planet Terror or Death Proof substitute would do; never ever, never. Then something happened. Starz broadcast Grindhouse exactly the way it was shown in the theater. Starz went on to show Planet Terror extended version and finally, Death proof extended version (all in HD if that tickles your fancy). I DVR'd Death Proof in it's extended version (as Planet Terror extended is only slightly different in content but still very good) and watched Death Proof 3 or 4 times in a week. Sure enough, there it was. There WHAT was, you ask? The SUBTEXT. The underlying film behind it's face. The still waters running so deep and they always do with Quentin, but are almost always ignored, sluffed-off and misunderstood by "normal people." I know many of you will now call bullshit. That is exactly what people do. They mock what they either don't understand or do not wish to take the time to understand. How many casual QT fans gave up on him after Pulp. A lot. Stay with me... because here is why Death Proof IS great. See, Rodgiquez didn't ask you to look deeply into Planet Terror. He's like, "Just enjoy this crazy thing we made." It takes a man like Frank Miller to deepen Rodgriguez and draw him in a bit (ala the brilliant Sin City). But Quentin is a different animal. He gives you Death Proof (and I'm talking about the extended version that screened at Caan) and says, "I dare you to take this ride with me. I dare you to live it with me - exactly the way I live it." Now, most people agree on one thing when talking about Death Proof; Kurt Russel is great in it. This is of course, TRUE. His performance sits up there with Plissken and McReady. What many don't realize is what Quentin wrapped around that performance. Someone mentioned an example earlier. The look; that look on Rosario's face. It's at that moment, when she realizes why something she could give two shits about was suddenly electric. Kurt's terrific work HAS wrapped around it a horrific, electrifying, whiskey stained, stunningly vibrant, sonically driven, nightmarishly beautiful, blood-stained dream. Did you see the colors... the horror. This ain't Magnolia or Panic Room kids. I like PTA and Fincher too, but please. Perhaps you need to really watch this film again. Did you ever really understand or appreciate the real Quentin Tarantino? Or were you just pretending to...

No seriously Flexfill..........................................
by crackerfarmboy
Death Proof sucked. I love QT and I think all his prior films were pure genius, but Death Proof really and truly sucked! It's okay, it's not a big deal. Hopefully he'll come back strong with IB, but that doesn't change the fact that Death Proof SUCKED! Don't feel compelled to defend a shit movie just because there was some talent behind it. Sometimes that just plain happens.

A filmmaker SHOULD be judged on what movies he makes along with how well he makes them.
As in the Olympics, there is "difficulty" and "execution". A gymnast may go up on the beam, execute a single forward flip, and it may be the most goddamn beautiful, heart-wrenchingly gorgeous single front flip in the history of mankind. But that person will not be thought of as a gold medal Olympian, because they did not aspire to anything great...they did not push themselves or try something difficult. Likewise, a filmmaker may be content making simple movies, and the films may be a hell of a fun ride and may be well-crafted little genre movies. But to become something exceptional, they need to aspire to more. -
I'm still waiting for you to tell us why Death Proof is great.
-
In fact I think he's a transexual and keep imagining stories about angry chicks cutting men's dicks
-
This will be appealling to anyone that doesn't have a bug up their anally-retentive movie-nerd asshole, you know, people with an open mind that don't tend to shoot things down before really knowing anything about it.
Oh, and for the record, Death Proof was great, Kill Bill 2 is better than 1, (I mean like, waaaaaaay better) and I'd happily watch any Tarantino film a thousand times than a Lord Of The Rings film more than once. -
I just find Tino's films too damn smug these days. I'm not hating for the sake of it and I certainly aint 'too elite' or 'not elite enough' or what-the-fuck-ever. (Well maybe the latter). I hope Basterds is great so I can get the double-disc.
Hell, I hope Uwe conquers the critics with his next video game adaption (hope it's the Atari 2600 classic 'Adventure') -
Its now in fashion to hate tarantino apparently. all this talk of how its all been downhill since pulp fiction and how he was never that talented in the first place. but that's all it is - sheep babble and bullshit. what goes around, comes around, and in a year or two he'll be fashionable once again. mark my words. its also apparent that the people who are harshest on him are those who jumped on the bandwagon when he was hip, didn't really know much about cinema history and his inspirations (ie. they believed he was the first person to tell a story out of chronological order, or use post-modern dialogue, or they didn't know his references-they thought he was the first to come up with a lot of the stuff he used), and subsequently over-rated him and proclaimed him the second coming. whereas those who simply saw him as just a talented director (ie. me) are much more forgiving and appreciative of his later works. i applaud him for going the 'b - movie' route if that's what he truly wants to do. too many people just want him to rehash semi-realistic crime movies ad nauseam. tarantino should do what he wants, and not a path some critic dictates he should follow because it shows 'artistic growth'. apart from death proof, which was really just a throwaway movie, there's hasn't really been much of a dip in quality - jackie brown and the combined kill bill are just as good as reservoir dogs and pulp. in fact, the last 30 mins of kill bill vol. 2 contained his most mature themes and writing to date (as, of course, did jackie brown), so for those who think he's wandered into genre juvenilia, well you're just not looking very hard are you? so suck it.
-
Maybe I'll like this one.
-
you just rendered all further argument meaningless. You are a sage.
-
Like someone else pointed out up above, I was 14-16 when I became a fan of Tarantino. Perhaps it was his influence that saw me extend out into trash cinema and obsure foreign action films and the like. I probably would have gone that way anyway, but this was pre-internet when you sort of had to discover things for yourself. But now? I've seen all the films he steals from. And his much vaunted "dialouge" i.e, two people having a stilted conversation that makes reference to popular culture and slow, deliberate attempts at talking in some kind of catch phrase lingo is boring. It's done. The last great thing he did was writing Kill Bill. Too bad the finished film was merely a shadow of what was on the page.
-
I am no slave to fashion. I guess we are all armchair directors, but I have disliked Mr. T from the git-go. I think his films are gratuitously violent and project the mentality of a 12 year old, that may need counseling. Correct me if I am wrong, didn't he make a film called Hostel.. it was crap who ever made it- gore and sick crap I that really tells us there is a great lack of real storytelling in his work which only appeals to special effect and gore freaks who would not know a good story if it slapped them in the face. This lack of creative talent is not good film making. It just promotes more mass murderers and desensitized youth and adults. Please allow me to vote no on MR. T. If the muse was ever upon him, she got disgusted and left the building long ago.
-
Arguably, the GREAT AMERICAN FILMS are GENRE movies. Gangster movies - Godfather I and II, Goodfellas, Bonnie and Clyde. Westerns - The Wild Bunch, The Searchers, Red River. Mystery/Suspense - Fucking HITCHCOCK! Comedies - Some Like It Hot, Dr. Strangelove, Annie Hall. Shit, comedies, those are what are supposedly the hardest things to make anyhow. I, for one, think it is fine NOT to "rise above the genre." I think that making an exceptionally well done genre film is a feat within itself. But, films that can entertain you on the basic levels of their genre AND subtly bring up themes (like most of the films I just mentioned) are often make it to "the canon." Shit, look at last year where a crime film (Zodiac), a ham-fisted old school epic (There Will Be Blood), a neo-noir/western (No Country For Old Men), and a regular western (Assassination of Jesse James) were released. All of them have the requisite violence and excitement of their genre, but manage to "exceed" the expectations certain people have of that genre. I for one, think Tarantino has managed the trick in nearly all of his movies. But like I said, even when he wasn't "rising above," I was still enjoying myself.
-
Like, in the dictionary sense? Oy vey!
-
Eli Roth made Hostel. Tarantino "executive produced" it. Which really doesn't mean much. Steven Spielberg executive produced Transformers, and obviously his signature is all over it.
-
This exact talkbalk will be reposted almost word for word when Wes Anderson's next movie comes out.

earlier. I guess I see Death Proof as great because it transcends the sum of its parts. Sure, it's exploitation. Jackie, Bill and Death Proof are examples of exploitation to one degree or another. It's that QT didn't try to make Pulp Fiction over and over that I respect. He reaches for genre films that are not classically the type that people respect. But he took what was great about slasher films and car flicks and paid homage, yes, but essentially elevated the medium. That's pretty great, even if it's not everyone's cup of tea. I find it highly entertaining and twisted and fun because for me it is. Quentin acheived greatness within this genre and that is rare. That's how I see Death Proof; a gem of that genre. It's not Pulp Fiction 2. Did Kasdan, Lucas and Spielberg elevate the serials of the 30's and 40's with Raiders? I say so, but some of my dad's friends say it was more thrilling living through those cliff-hangers when they were little kids. These guys are 80+ now. Did I love the slasher drive-in stuff when I was a kid? Hell yeah. For me, Quentin took the best of all that stuff, mixed it up with a modern cinematic sensibility and delivered the goods. Yes, this is his standard MO and a lot of people are bored with his brain children by now; I get that. Death Proof is raw and evil, but it's suppose to be. It's also really colorful and slick and that's pretty cool. Granted, it ain't Lawrence of Arabia, but I like it more every time I see it. Maybe it's QT's Kubrick film and won't be appreciated for 11 years?
-
If that was the angle I was going for. Way to go on saying what I couldn't manage to about Death Proof. Good Write up, my man.
-
Their dialogue gets repetitive in later films and very tiresome. In Pulp Fiction it was fresh. But it was in Kill Bill 2 that I realised Tarantino dialogue is getting stale, forced and repulsive. "That fucking hat" piece was trying to say the least, the Caradine "Batman, Superman" speech was so jarring and out of place. Then it was further downhill from there with his next movies. I hope Tarantino new movie will return to the glory days of Reservoir and Pulp and bring something fresh again.
-
Probably my favorite scene from KILL BILL.

I'm a big QT fan, and I'm sure he'll do something I'll enjoy, but the more I hear, the weirder (and sillier) it gets. I'm assuming we're gonna see something exploitative? Lots of Ilsa She Wolf of the SS type of shit?
-
Are you telling me that someone hired a German actor for a German role? WHY- THAT IS UNPRECEDENTED!
-
It was fresh in RD, PF and Jackie Brown, his most mature film and most underrated imo. Don't get me wrong i'm a person that still goes to watch Allens films. I went to Match Point, Anything Else, etc. The thing w/ QT is after Jackie Brown he waited entirely too long to make another film. And I f'ing hate some of this casts w/ the exception of Pitt. The Jew Bear is a f'ing Joke. Mike Meyers cameo is retarted. Everything else does nothing for me. But again the a major role still has not been casts and lets see who he gets for the young girl.
-
but i hope im wrong
-
Maybe it's just me, but a WWII adventure movie just seems so out of touch with the current market for movies... on par with that "Ghost Town" movie out now that seems like it's about a decade off.
-
Waltz was great in the brit tv series The Gravy Train. Kruger was shockingly wooden in Troy and hasn't improved since.
-
He could wear a little dress and be like "alright? ok? alright? ok? alright? ok?" and drop all sorts of obscure references to grade Z genre films of South Eastern Kazakstan, while snorthing fat lines of coke offa some fat asian female comedien's buttcheeks.
-
Why wasn't deathproof listed in there? Because of 7.3 IMDB score or 61% rottentomatoes? And don't tell me you didn't notice the fall in both the metrices you used [with slight upswing for KB overshadowed by massive drop for DP]
Now, we're not discussing relative merits of the movies, but as you said, these two sites can say a lot, and looking at those figures I'd say QT is slipping. And just looking at the way AICN is hyping up IB, I got a feeling it will end up lower ranks than even Deathproof. I hope am proven wrong, nothing will please me more. But fact is, QT is slipping, though not as badly as M Night or anything, but QT is in a leauge of his own and needs to be compared to no one but his own work. -
You forgot the explosive exhales between his "okay alrights." It should read: "Okay? KKCKH! Alright?"
That's how I do it, anyway. -
...but again the woman awakened in him and he had to have chicks talking for no reasons, chicks being better than men, etc...
