NBC Likes Its Next Six CHUCKs So Much It Orders Nine More!!

Published at:  Aug 28, 2008 1:09:51 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

NBC is so excited about the first six episodes of Josh Schwartz’ second season of “Chuck,” it just decided to expand that second season from 13 to 22 episodes.

The second season doesn’t begin airing until Sept. 29. A network will typically wait till the ratings come in before ordering a “back nine,” but NBC is apparently convinced “Chuck” is among the least likely to falter this season.

NBC series not yet granted a back-nine order include “Knight Rider,” “My Own Worst Enemy,” “Life,” “Lipstick Jungle” and “Kath & Kim.”

    by nomihs

My Hulu queue just got bigger. Bring on the Chuck. It started off shakey, but the combo of the three main characters started to grow on me. There's the eye candy of Sarah and Ellie, the bumbling buffoon Chuck and the stick up his ass agent John, played by Adam Baldwin (not a Baldwin brother, too bad for him). Here's a guy with a hell of a resume. Anyone see him in that 80's movie Poison Ivy with Michael J. Fox about camp counselors? My first time I remember seeing him he kinda scared me a little.

    by jimmy_009

By that I mean the guy that plays him? In the commercials he looks like some weird rubber/wax man, like he's too tan and his skin is too tight or something. Very odd. I can't watch this show because A) he doesn't look like a comptuer geek and B) he's too tan and rubber looking. And his eyebrows are too thick and too groomed at the same time. He gives me the heebies.

    this is actually kinda meaningless

    by i87d

yes, it's exciting that they ordered more BEFORE the season began, but it's not better news for the show. Why? Because NBC isn't yet giving out additional money yet. If Chuck already has 13 scripts in the can (and they should be close to it), then NBC's choice is either to not commission any more scripts and have a lot of dead time where no writing is done, or commission the more scripts now and save money by not having to play catch up later. These episodes aren't going to be shot until after the show airs and real numbers come in, so it's not like they're spending any more real money now on it. Just sayin'...

    Reply to Talkback

  • Aug 28, 2008 12:44:14 AM CDT

yes, I realize scripts cost money

    by i87d

just not as much as shooting the actual shows. not by a long shot. it costs 30,000 bucks for a one hour script. it costs 3.3 million bucks to shoot that script. so it's a small price to pay now if Chuck is already ahead of the game script-wise, forcing NBC to make a decision of some kind early.

  • Aug 28, 2008 12:49:46 AM CDT

but I87D, what about other second year shows?

    by i87d

don't they usually get 24 episodes at the onset? Good question, kind reader. But only shows that do really well will get an automatic 24 episode pick-up. so it's not bad that chuck didn't get it in the first place... but it probably shouldn't been pointed more that the 13 episodes was a cautious move by primetime standards in the first place.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Good point. didn't think of that. if that's the case, then NBC is putting it's mouth where it's PR is... but pardon me if i'm a little too jaded to believe that outright.

I hope someone from NBC is checking this message board to gauge reaction, because the amount of viewing I'll be devoting to your network this coming season is ZERO. Of course, I won't be missing much in the case of Chuck. (Well, there's some good ogling to be had, but the show itself is inane.)Next time you have a major international event that happens once every four years, try showing a little more respect to your audience. Another good idea might be to actually reply to people who go to the trouble to give you substantive feedback on your horrible coverage. You know - at least pretend that you listen and give a damn? Keep that in mind for 2012, and maybe you'll earn me as audience member again.

    by newc0253

I mean, if you only watch one show about a dweeby guy working in a giant store who turns out to have a special ability, watch Reaper. It's funnier and better written.

But Chuck is funny too, but it might be funnier if i could take the spy stuff a little more seriously - like say Alias. As it is, it's just goofy most of the time, albiet goofy with hot chicks which is never terrible.

Still, Chuck got better over its first season, sounds like season 2 may pick up further still.

    Chuck vs. Big Bang Theory

    by curious jorge

Two geek shows that premiered head-to-head. Chuck had the advantage, because it was more action-oriented, and also because it's an hour long. The half-hour BBT started in the 8:30 slot, so most geek viewers were already invested in Chuck by that point. NBC stumbled when they took Chuck off the air during the writers' strike, and allowed Chuck fans to build interest in BBT. CBS was smart to move BBT to the 8 PM time slot, so it looks like Chuck will have its work cut out for it.

    by bizarrojerry

That's the first reason that it's a good show. My only issue is that Chuck needs a haircut, and they have to turn his goofy friend down a coupla notches. He can be funny, but is often too much to take.I don't understand this need to constantly compare a show someone else likes to some show a network cancelled. Don't hold TV grudges, people. "Reaper?" What does that have to do with Chuck? And remember, most of the hype is simply generated by the network, so don't let it turn you off. It just means that its one of the few new shows that NBC got passable ratings from and they gotta push it.

    by big jim

shows having a similar general premise: 20-something slacker in relative dead-end job is thrown, against his will, into situation where he needs to save the world every week. Both are comedies, and both premiered last year. But I hold no grudge - I like both shows and both are back. However, I do hold a grudge against Knight Rider because Journeyman isn't coming back. Journeyman's demise has nothing to do with KR but I'm pissed with NBC for cancelling a fairly original, and very enjoyable show, and instead backing a poorly done (based on the tv movie) update of an old show. But then again they didn't cancel Chuck and they are giving Life a second season so I am conflicted.

Big Jim - re: NBC Olympics coverage...

    by darthcorleone

I'll give you the abbreviated version of my beef.First, they altered event schedules so that they could broadcast live from China. E.g., they moved events from the evening to the morning so that they would be shown live in the U.S. This was at the expense of what the athletes are accustomed to in competition schedule. Fine, I can accept and forgive that. What I can't accept is then not even bothering to broadcast the damn thing live. What did the west coast get? Three hour tape-delay. We're forced to put ourselves in media blackout for three hours - the only thing I can watch is NBC coverage of the Olympics. Otherwise, I'll get spoiled. On top of that, suppose I didn't like what they happened to be showing at that moment and wanted to go online to watch their wonderful live (supposedly comprehensive although it won't show anything that NBC wants to broadcast itself during the primetime hours) coverage. Wouldn't I then need to navigate their front page - again spoiling myself with their headlines? I could go on and on about how they could have structured the broadcast more intelligently and even gotten better ratings out of it. NBC sucks.

    by slkboxrman

ok in response to several posts since my post.... heres the deal guys and girls...watching a show just for the fact that there is a hot chick or hot guy in it for oogling is a really silly statement to make as to why u like a show and watch it regularly...so if a show sucks(like chuck) its getting good ratings cuz men and women are rubbing one out lookin at them....its the same logic america uses when they vote on american idol....oh he/she is hot, im gonna vote for them.... its the problem with entertainment these days...too much focus on looks over brains...its the reason why good scripted shows that are smart and intelligent get cancelled and underwritten shows with hot girls and stupid reality shows keep gettin renewed....its to keep the rapidly growing brain-dead section of the US population tuned to their particular channel...make an american citizen from this generation have to watch something and pay attention to a story arc is too taxing on the brain apparently...thats why so many good recent shows get cancelled...too tiresome to invest brain power in one show when u can watch chuck or some other similar show and just see hot girls and guys..crappy actors, dialogue, and story are A-O-K......as for the olympics....honestly, and no disrespect to people that actually watch that, and wait for it every 4 yrs , but they should throw that on a pay-per-view channel or just its own channel for that sake...so the majority of people that dont watch the olympics dont have to worry about it being on 24/7....watching the olympics can be compared at best to watching a parade, which i dont, and at worst to flies fucking...and honestly i think id be more interested in that..

I was with you until the stuff about the Olympics - I'm such a tool for that stuff - most shows on TV are completely vapid (the new 90210), but applaud shows that takes brains to make (Mad Men, BSG, et. al). If I want to look at a hot person for an hour, I'll stare at their picture. Chuck lost my interest after episode 2.

    by big jim

slkboxrman, what's the problem with the Olympics being on 1 of the 4 main networks? If you didn't want to watch, there were still 3 others (plus the CW, whatever that qualifies as) to chose from. Having it on one of the major networks means it is available to the most people, as opposed to pay-per-view, or a specialty cable channel, that is only available to those with the ability to fork out even more money for tv. The Olympics should be for everyone, whether they want it or not, not just for an elite few.

    by darthcorleone

Yeah, seriously. I'm sorry you had to "worry" so much about the Olympics being on 24/7. It sounds like that was a terrible burden on your life, as it preempted crappy NBC reruns. If people didn't want to see it and there was only a niche market for it as you describe, then - believe me - it wouldn't receive the national network coverage that it does. You don't like watching it. Fine. Don't watch it. But there is more than enough of an audience to warrant the attention it receives, and if the Olympics open the minds of just a few people or inform them of global situations they would otherwise ignore, then the event has done its job outside of the basic athletic competition.

love that name, lol..i too watched the first 2 episodes and i felt like slashing my wrists..all the stuff in the previews were all used in the first episode and thats the only thing that made me even tune in, especially the ninja stealing the computer part ....lol.....yea im kinda biased against the olympics i guess...and for DARTH... i hardly watch NBC when repeats are on..and it certainly aint a burden, but it gets coverage on lots of channels, even if its not as much as NBC....ive heard phelps name so much im beginning to think its my own...lol....but seriously theres nothing wrong with an olympics channel, they have channels for everything these days....honestly they should put presidential speeches on c-span so it dont run into shows or pre-empt them....i for one dont need to hear polital propaganda instead of gettin my fix with my shows..

It takes a while, but it does get better. I wasn't impressed with the 1st few episodes at all, and was only watching it because it was on before Heroes and nothing else was on. But when they finally start to explore WHY Bryce all the things that he did (including sending Chuck the e-mail in the first place), they get a nice overarching story going on. Plus, the 3 leads (Chuck, Sarah, and Casey) really develop some wonderful chemistry. Their dynamic is now the main reason I enjoy the show.

It also started to look better the more Heroes started sucking.

    Chuck is the lamest

Chuck is a lot of fun

    by bass bastardson

All you douchebags who hate it just don't get it. It is a light and fun spy comedy. Its not stupid, its silly. On purpose. And it did get better and better as it went on.

Also, Zack Levi is one of the nicest guys in Hollywood

    by bass bastardson

He is one of the friendliest most outgoing actors i have met and he treats everyone on set with respect. With all the assholes and bullshit in this town, that is worth something to me.

    I liked Chuck

    by bob dobbs

First season was enjoyable. Sadly, it's up against Terminator on Monday nights this season, so I'll never see it again.

    Chuck??

    by spidermonkee

Seriously? This is what people are into? I wanted to like this show, I really did. But then the actor portraying the main character was awful, and the premise made no sense, and made less sense as the show went on. Reaper kicks this show's ass. The characters are better, the acting is better, the scripts are better, and that guy that plays satan is awesome! Furthermore, Reaper's premise is easier to swallow, because it relies on the occult, whereas Chuck would have us believe it takes place in the "real" world.

Chuck is enjoyable fun, light and silly and joyful

    by chromedome

and I am glad it exists! I don't always want dark and serious. It is well cast, well written (great character dialog and development). Sure, the premise is silly, just like Get Smart, Eureka, and every sitcom ever aired, and even many dramas--but it is what it is. LIke it or don't, watch it or don't--Just like Scriptgirl talkbacks: I like her reports--folks act as if they MUST view it and then comment how Harry should not waste their time...

    Stanford Joke in 2 shows?

    by leftfoot

Anybody notice that early in the 1st season for 'Chuck' & 'Reaper' there were jokes about Stanford?

Journeyman was very interesting, but, overall s-l-o-w .
