Published at:  Aug 27, 2008 9:03:30 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

George Clooney is talking to writer-director Jason Reitman (“Thank You For Smoking,” “Juno”) to appear in the “Up In The Air,” a big-screen adaptation of the novel by Walter Kirn ("Thumbsucker," "She Needed Me").

Thursday morning’s Variety describes the premise:

Clooney will play a ruthless human resources exec who becomes fixated on notching his millionth frequent flyer mile. It's a Pyrrhic victory, considering that his time away from home has left him with no life.

    This book had no plot.

    by christopher3

It was just a bunch of funny editorializing. But hey, Reitman made a movie out of Thank You For Smoking, so he's the right dude for the job.

    Who doesn't like Clooney?

    by kirklazarus

As for "hits," he has had five flicks gross over $100 million domestic. And that does not include most of the movies that he's done that are actually great. Anyway, I think he and Reitman would be a very interesting pairing. I'd watch it.

    Juno was good, but...

    by c0ns

that's it. just one of many good/great movies. Not Oscar nom worthy. Reitman is badass though and he shouldn't be antagonized because his movie became overrated.

Anyway, really looking forward to this collaboration and hoping for greatness.

Sounds like the new album sounds bad.
Worse than St. Anger, but St. Anger was supposed to sound like that, I guess.

Clooney has some fucking great movies...

    by thewaqman

Syriana being at the top of the list. Man that movie was great. I think he's fucking awesome. Although this movie sounds like shit.

And Reitman is pissing me off. Juno made me want to fucking cut my ears off, the dialogue was horrible. But I guess that was more Cody's fault than his. Thank You for Smoking was fucking great though.

How about "Thank you for smoking director

    by bottombrick

Jason Reitman". And all the pre-emptive Clooney defending has me itching to start talking shit about him, but I'll wait until after Burn After Reading comes out because if that motherfucker goes 0 for 3 tanking Coen brothers movies I'll... shit my pants and whine like a baby.

Could not care less about Juno

    by jackrabbitslim

That soundtrack - hideously annoying. Juno herself- too cutesy-clever by half. But "Thank You for Smoking" earned Mr Reitman at very least a 5 movie pass for me.

Poor Jason Reitman. He should've really followed up Juno with somebody else starring. There are way too many Clooney haters. The guy's box office poison alone.

    Clash of The Mis-Nominations!

    by spandau belly

So we get the star and the director of the two movies that got Oscar nominations they didn't deserve last year teaming up? Maybe that means this year when this movie gets nominated for best picture I'll only be baffled by one entry as opposed to the Juno-Michael Clayton way over-rated duo of last year. And hell, maybe they'll even send Zodiac and Assassination of Jesse James a fruit basket to apologize.

When it earned a Best Picture nomination...

    by darkman

...that was the exact moment JUNO became overrated. It was a decent comedy, but things need to be kept in proper perspective.

In a just world, THANK YOU FOR SMOKING would've been swimming in Oscar nominations, esp. for Aaron Eckhart.

Great, a famous actor who likes taking on...

    by qweruiop

...a lot of quirky roles, a director who enjoys only making quirky movies, and a story featuring one of the quirkiest concepts ever. This just screams of having the Bravo Channel seal of approval for a funky, quirky, pretentious movie.

    by sharpie

Clooney's the man, and Thank you for Smoking was 10 times better than Juno. If there's anyone who can make it great, its Reitman.
