HEROES!! ENTOURAGE!! SHIELD!! REAPER!! ZOOM!! MXC!! HercVault!!

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

In its second season, “Heroes” found itself crippled and reeling from the loss of Brian Fuller, the “Dead Like Me”-“Wonderfalls” creator who left the “Heroes” writing staff to oversee his critically acclaimed ABC comedy “Pushing Daisies.”

The incredible cliffhangers that ended so many first-season episodes gave way to not-incredible ones.

Storylines became repetitive. Peter lost his memory and got to discover them all over again. Claire endured more high-school cheerleading drama. Hiro again couldn’t get his powers to function properly.

New, boring characters were introduced. A Latino Twin became the new Radioactive Man, killing people with black tears on a long journey to New York. Micah got a fry-chef cousin, who could learn Kung Fu by watching it on TV. Kristin Bell found herself playing Bob Bishop’s lightning-lass daughter, a superpowered blonde psychopath far less interesting than the one Katee Sackoff played on “Bionic Woman.”

Lots of season two didn’t make sense. If Noah was trying to hide from his deadly former employers, why take a job servicing the public at Copy Kingdom? Why was the memory-challenged Peter not more suspicious of Adam? If Peter can walk through a vault door, why did he waste so much critical time ripping it off its hinges?

Do we write off the series? We do not. For all its flaws, “Heroes” isn’t going anywhere; it ranked as fourth-place NBC’s top rated scripted series last season, likely the first sci-fi series ever to manage that feat. The first hour of the 3rd season premiere airing next month (not included in the new set) is certainly watchable enough; I’m hopeful producers find a way to right the franchise. “Lost” helped itself enormously after a rocky and Abrams-less second season by bringing aboard sharp talents like “Cloverfield” screenwriter Drew Goddard and “Y The Last Man” mastermind Brian K. Vaughn. Perhaps the “Heroes” producers will be inspired to adopt a similar strategy and maybe phone up representatives of funnybook giants Warren Ellis and Grant Morrison.

The DVD and Blu-ray sets streeting today boast extras aplenty:

* “Heroes Season 2: A New Beginning.” (14:40) A preview of season two. We’re told Claire will get a boyfriend, Noah will inexplicably take a job at Copy Kingdom, Niki will team with Mohinder, Syler will hook up with a couple of superpowered Hondurans, Peter will lose his memory, Hiro will meet a white guy in feudal Japan, Micah’s superpowered fast-food cousin will be introduced, and Kristin Bell will play a lightning lass.

* “Season 3 Sneak Peek.” (8:37) As 3.1 is shot, the cast behaves as if very excited to be back. We get a glimpse of what may be FuturePeter at the site of Nathan’s shooting. We get a glimpse of Noah bouncing a ball inside his glass cage. We learn that three days after the conclusion of season two, Molly has been shipped off somewhere for her own safety.

* “Takezo Kensei: Sword Saint.” (23:48) A snoozy fake documentary about the snoozy fake samurai legend who would later call himself Adam Monroe. In its final minutes, we learn the documentary was made subsequent to Daniel Linderman’s murder and the theft of the Kensei sword.

* “The Drucker Files.” (8:32) An annoying unconvincing fake documentary about Richard Drucker, a Holocaust survivor and friend of Charles Deveaux who supposedly invented the Internet. We never see Drucker’s face, suggesting he hadn’t yet been cast.

* “Genetics Of A Scene.” (23:14) A look at the shooting of Hiro disarming warlords in 2.2, the introduction of the Telemundo Twins in 2.1, the Exploding Peter scene from 2.8, and the showdown in Isaac’s loft in 2.11.

* “Generations Alternate Ending.” (17:59) We see the vial breaks when Hiro transports Adam from the vault and Peter is not there in time to catch it. Its contents pass through vents out into the world. Peter, Nathan and Matt try to convince the Odessa PD to quarantine the town. Matt uses his power to persuade. Peter regrets believing Adam. Elle uses her power in an unsuccessful effort to pursue Sylar. NIki beats on Monica’s kidnappers. Storyboards show Peter literally moving Earth to block the road into Odessa. Nathan Petrelli, standing at the same podium at which he was shot in the “real” season finale, announces the quarantine to the world via MSNBC. Claire watches her TV as Nathan collapses from fever rather than a gunman’s bullet. Sylar injects himself, heals and moves a spinach can with his brain.

* “Inside The Alternate Ending of Generations.” (10:57) Writers Tim Kring, Jesse Alexander and Jeph Loeb discuss what would have been the final eight episodes of season two had the writers strike not manifested. The writers explain that, as the writer’s strike was looming, 2.11, 2.12 and 2.13 were all written and being shot with three different crews simultaneously. This is why a lot of never-to-be-aired footage from 2.12 and a little never-to-be-aired footage from 2.13 exist. Production sketches show us that tanks and helicopters and hazmat suits would have moved into Odessa. 150 fleeing citizens would have been gunned down. A gymnasium full of cots would have housed the most severly afflicted. Suresh and Claire would have come to Odessa to try to help. Maya would fall for Suresh, then save the day by absorbing the virus until it killed her. The government man overseeing the quarantine, introduced in Peter’s 2.7 flash-forward, was going to turn out to be a secret PrimaTech operative who wanted everybody in Odessa to die to preserve PrimaTech’s secrets.

* “Untold Stories 2.12.” (10:28) Footage from never-completed episode 2.12. Elle and Bob discuss tracking Syler, who keeps killing. We see Sylar steal the powers of a New Jersey man with impenetrable skin. We see Elle on his tail, flirting with a cop for information. She spots Sylar but loses him in a crowd. Bob threatens to put another agent on the Sylar case. Sylar menaces “Chameleon Girl.” Elle visits Noah in stir, seeking help with tracking Sylar. Noah tells Elle she’s unwittingly being used as bait. Hiro tells Ando he’s through using his powers, blaming himself for the contagion in Odessa.

* “Untold Stories 2.13.” (1:41) Footage from never-completed episode 2.13. Angela has a dream of Hiro impaled, Claire decapitated, Monica, Matt and Peter gutted. Then four grim figures – Adam, NIki, the Haitian and Maury Parkman – bear down on Angela. Then Sylar appears behind Angela and grabs her shoulders. She wakes, and the words “SPOILER ALERT” flash as the scene fades to black.

* “NBC.com Featurette: Hotel Corinthian Explosion.” (:43) A Las Vegas hotel is detonated as people cheer.

* “NBC.com Featurette: Maya & Alejandro Viral Video.” (2:31) A Latino fellow stumbles across a number of Maya’s victims in the dark.

* “NBC.com Featurette: Nathan and Peter Brooklyncam.” (:34) Somebody in Brooklyn captures Nathan and Peter’s explosion over Manhattan at the end of season one.

* “Tim Sale Gallery of Screen Art.” (2:02) A montage of fallen Peter, fallen Claire, a vial, NIki banding on a mirror, Peter in the future, Hiro and Kensei fighting, Mohinder fireing his gun, and Noah with his eye blown out.

* “Previews” promote the DVD releases of “Battlestar Galactica,” “Coach,” “Eureka,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Murder She Wrote,” “Northern Exposure,” “Quantum Leap,” “The Rockford Files,” “The A-Team,” “Knight Rider” and “Magnum P.I.”

DELETED SCENES:

2.5 “Fight or Flight: And She Hits Me Hard.” (1:28) Kensei’s attempt to kiss Yaeko is thwarted.

2.5 “Fight or Flight: I’m The Only Normal Person In This Family.” (:38) Monica’s brother catches her testing her superpowers in front of a Bruce Lee movie.

2.5 “Fight or Flight: Don’t Thank Me Yet.” (:58) Mohinder saves Monica from a gunman.

2.6 “The Line: So It Does Run In The Family.” (1:54) Mohinder reveals to Monica he already knows about Micah and D.L.

2.6 “The Line: To Fight Alongside The Great Takezo Kensei.” (1:40) Before undertaking a prophesized heroic act, Hiro discloses he feels like Superman’s sidekick.

2.6 “The Line: No More Tazer Kidnapping?” (1:33) Bob brings Monica home.

2.7 “Out Of Time: Get Down From There.” (1:40) Claire’s flying boyfriend helps Mrs. Bennett replace a lightbulb.

2.8 “Four Months Ago: Happy Birthday, Micah.” (:50) Niki takes her PrimaTech pills and lights the candles on a cake.

2.8 “Four Months Ago: There Is No Need To Cry, Child.” (1:11) Maya, in a Venezuelan church, begs for Jesus’ forgiveness.

2.8 “Four Months Ago: I’m Not OK. Do I Look OK?” (1:43). A hideously burned Nathan screams at his visiting wife and kids.

2.9 “Cautionary Tales: I Will Bring Him To Justice.” (:20). Hiro explains to Ando his resolve to avenge his father.

2.9 “Cautionary Tales: I Laughed So Hard Chocolate Milk Came Out Of My Nose.” (1:07). Molly and Matt discuss their day.

The Blu-ray edition not only allows viewers to see the series in glorious HD, it features picture-in-picture video to accompany the audio commentaries and an interactive “Hero Connections” chart that demonstrates how the series’ huge cast of characters are linked.

The 12-episode fourth season of “Entourage” was the one that followed the progress of Billy Walsh’s drug-lord epic “Medellin” from its troubled production to its disastrous screening at Cannes. In between Drama joined a medical-marijuana clinic, Vince ran into Dennis Hopper in Malibu, Lloyd took a leave of absence from Miller Gold, Ari discovered his son can’t get into his daughter’s private school, and E took on Anna Faris.

Upon seeing all 10 episodes, AICN’s own “Capone” called “The Shield’s” sixth season “one of the greatest seasons of the one of the best shows on the tube right now.”

so they can bring back Reaper as soon as possible. Reaper and Chuck were the best new shows last season. Haven't decided if I want to buy season 2 of Heroes... it was just god awful, and I dunno if I want to support that.

You know, generally I HATE tattoos on girls. I don't even want a girl to have some little butterfly on her hip or anything. And yet for some fucking totally inexplicable reason, I want to thrash around in bed with Kat Von D for about 48 hours straight. She's an absolute tattoo trainwreck and yet she's one of the sexiest women on TV.

    by worldofwarcraft

Watch it with my kid brother and sister, and it's nice to watch a show that we can all enjoy. So much better than X Files, which i tried to get into but never could. And it had one of my favorite season one endings of any show I've ever seen. Check this out if you get a chance.

    by derlanghaarige

Trust me, I didn't want to watch it too at first, because a)it's a JAG-spin off, b)it's ANOTHER crimeshow with pathologists and stuff like that. Then one day I was too sick to leave the living room when my mother watched it and I instantly liked it!
I don't wanna make it sound better than it really is, but seriously, it's been a while that I saw a show with so many entertaining characters. I'm not kidding when I say that every single one of them deserves a spin off!

    by bouncy x

i must be one of if not the only person who doesnt understand the point of PiP in high def releases. why would i wanna watch the movie with behind the scenes stuff tucked in a corner? thats what the extras section is for, to see all that stuff. if i wanna watch the extras, i watch those and if i wanna watch the movie i watch that. why have both together? and its getting bad now where some movies offer stuff in PiP you cant see elsewhere, retarded i say. but as i said, i'm probably a small minority so suffer the children.

I sadly have to accept people will throw vitirol at the show. But at the very least can you people throw out reasons it sucks. When you don't, I just view you as bandwagon jumpers who don't have a single original construct of their own as to why they don't take to a show.

I don't get the appeal either. I guess it might work for commentaries where you want to see the action on-screen and at the same time watch the actors as they sit around talking about what you are watching on-screen. But I don't have much desire for even that.

BOGO sale is BOGUS!!! According to phone rep there is NO SALE currently going on. Be prepared to argue with Apu on the phone. He ended up sending my case to the marketing guys who will contact me in 24 hours. If you try this, print out EVERYTHING and document your actions. Cut and paste the web address into a word doc, whatever you have to do. This is a great sale if Amazon will actually admit to having it.

as well as Big Bang Theory a week early. i've never seen BBT, so i left it, but i couldn't pass up Supenatural. i went home with Heroes S2, The Shield S6 and Supernatural S3, so all in all, a pretty good day. this is the same wal-mart that i got The Wire S5 a week and a half early, and Terminator S1 three days early, so i think i'm going to be doing more shopping there. i don't know how they can be fucking up so often, it's like they're just putting whatever they get in on the shelves, which suits me fine.

If you overlook the finale, that is. What led up to it was stirring, spectacular television. But the finale was the beginning of the show's decline. There are so many jump-the-shark moments in waiting that I'm beginning to think that Kristen Bell is getting off the sinking ship at exactly the right time. I mean, her and Sylar hooking up in an alternate future, with a baby? C'mon.

Finally, a release date for season 1 of Reaper. Still wondering why Supernatural Season 3 is not in bold. It's one of the best shows on TV.

S1 of Heroes is worth watching, though the finale was a shit-sucking letdown.

Everything leading up to it was very, very well done.

    Reaper is great.

    by trumpyeatspotatoes

I started out with both Reaper and Chuck, and while I didn't like Chuck (though I know it's more popular), I've thoroughly enjoyed Reaper. The first half of the season is a bit monster-of-the-week, but there are some good subplots that happen midway. And the last third of the season was brilliant.

Ray Wise is terrific. He could spend an episode eating puppies and I'd watch.

The Supernatural love here is intriguing...

    by trumpyeatspotatoes

I may have to give it a shot. I wrote it off early, but as I was with Buffy, Angel and Lost, I'm being slowly convinced by Those Who Know.

    mrfan - Rent it

    by flickchick85

Season 1 of Heroes was hardly worthy of the pedestal some people put it on. It was mostly entertaining, often frustrating, and occasionally boring. It's not a show you watch for rich characterization or clever dialogue, either. There was ONE truly great episode (1.17 - "Company Man"), and the writer of that then left the show to create a (imo) far superior (but completely different kind of) show. S1 of Heroes is good mindless entertainment, with some memorable visuals and very cool scenes. But I don't think it warrants much of a repeat viewing, so I'd really suggest renting it.And to help you determine if we have similar tastes or if you should listen to anything I say, here are some of the shows I think are pretty great: Arrested Development, Deadwood, Battlestar Galactica, Rome, The Office (both), Veronica Mars (S1, some of S2), The Wire, Dexter, Weeds, & Pushing Daisies so far. I used to love Lost, but now I just watch it b/c I'm a completist, and it still has its moments. Same thing happened with Alias. Fucking Abrams.

Heroes S1 is good, but overrated

    by derlanghaarige

For every episode that blows you are away are 1 or 2 where nothing interesting happens. It's a great concept, with lots of good ideas and in its whole it's worth watching, but it would have worked better as 4 part miniseries or something like that.

    The Real Ghostbusters

    by juntmonkey

Is Herc ever going to inform us that The Real Ghostbusters is finally being released (in an unprecedented for animation 25-disc complete series set loaded with extras) this November? Or no because it won't be sold on Amazon and only direct through Time-Life, and therefore he doesn't get a cut? Pre-order before September if you want 10% off.

    J. Michael Straczynski, who wrote for the show, will have interviews on the discs.

    Real Ghostbusters fucking ruled

    by darthpigman

This show built off the original movie in a more satisfying way than Ghostbusters 2 did. It was funny and scary. I love the Cthulu episode, Mrs. Robinson's neighborhood, Night Game (the classic baseball game between Good and Evil)... so many good ones. It's a shame Lorenzo Music left and was replaced by that terrible fuck from Full House.

    Real Ghostbusters

    by juntmonkey

Yea, RGB is far better than Ghostbusters 2. When people go back and watch the old cartoons they used to love, they're often disappointed in how bad the shows really were. When you watch RGB though, it's even better than you thought it was. The music is also phenomenal.

The reason Lorenzo Music was replaced by Dave Coulier is because apparently Bill Murray didn't like that Music's voice didn't sound like him. Ironic as hell, because Bill Murray went on to voice Garfield in the movies, which of course was originally Lorenzo Music's job.

    They finally killed PREACHER

    by obsd

There's an article over at chud.com. They finally announced they killed the Preacher series. I guess Herc was too busy writing articles about American Idol and linking to Amazon.com to let everybody know about it. HBO has killed Preacher, so officially, HBO can suck my dick.

Thanks! I gave up on Reaper after I tired of the demon-of-the-week concept, although I did enjoy the slacker interplay between the leads. I did see Michael Ian Black turn up while cruising the channels, and I understand there was a subplot of some gay demons plotting to kill Satan (the superb Ray Wise). Am I correct, and if so I need to reconnect with this series.

Remember the commercial breaks with "Its The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" celebrating Halloween with Mr. Wise? Its little touches like that, that make me appreciate the CW for trying.

    Heroes season 1

    by inwosuxred

Is pretty good. I'm pretty much done with buying DVD sets. Even if you like it, how much are you going to keep watching it? You can rent it, or you can watch for a marathon on sci-fi. I wouldn't be shocked to see them do a weekend right before season 3 starts.

agreed palooka_boy, why no Entourage love?

    by burgerking

Herc has this huge write up for Heroes, basically recapping all the flaws were already aware of, and no write up for Entourage? I guess geeks can't handle that kind of show, they need some comic book tie in to settle them.

    Reaper cancelled?

    by blackguard

Did Reaper get canceled or did it get a last minute reprieve? It was a fun show. Like a more comedic Supernatural. I can't believe Supernatural got another season! Whoo hoo! Thank God NBC Universal doesn't own it....

    by bannthisucommies

"announces the quarantine to the world via MSNBC" now I can suspend my disbelief quite a bit but to think that PMSNBC would waste even a few minutes on a earth ending plague is laughable. Clearly their 24/7 coverage of the messiah, the lord Barrack Obama, is not going to be curtailed for anything. Seriously how else is Chris Matthews gonna keep that tingle on leg going?

    Reaper

    by flickchick85

I gave up on Reaper after the 1st 3 or 4 episodes, b/c the Demon-of-the-week thing got so old very quickly. But then I heard about Michael Ian Black and Ken Marino joining the show, so I tuned back in to see them. SO glad I did. That demon revolution thing was great fun. I think the show was just a little too slow finding its footing, but now it's on fire. I can't wait to see where they go from here.
I definitely recommend to anyone who gave up on it early like I did to give it another shot. It's just getting better and better now.

    I'm a PA on Reaper

    by gwai lo

We're filming the second season right now. I haven't actually even seen the show. Actually I saw a bit last night and I wasn't that impressed but in fairness you can't just watch ten minutes from the middle of a season and pass any judgment. But it's cool being in the same vicinity as Ray "Leland Palmer" Wise. We exchanged good mornings the other day.

oh, and re:Red's comment about DVD TV sets

    by rben

i agree. i think alot of these packagers are relying on the nostalgia factor. i'm as guiltly as anyone for being sucked in. i've now finished watching the second disc in The Invaders show and i'm thinking: "no wonder i don't remember this that much as a kid growing up. it sucks donkey balls. god bless, mr. bowtie, roy thinnis but the writing in that series is laughably bad even for the 60s (in other words i saw better episodes in the first two seasons of voyage to the bottom of the sea, that i have on dvd as well as the first season of lost in space and first two seasons of wild wild west (i plan on being a completist and getting the remaining seasons of west some day. or not.) but unless Invaders picks up plot wise i'm not sure about getting the 2nd and final season of that thing. X-files alien arc is a perfect example of taking the basic aliens among us premise and making it work, that is: our government is in colusion with the aliens. In Invaders, they would have top officials dragged into David Vincent's quest only to have everything neatly resolved at the end with Vincent STILL being the odd man out. say what?

    Shield s.6

    by the__natural74

Picked up s.6 of The Shield and am so happy to see these eps again! The first 3 in particular are off the chart, they are so f'n good. Forrest, Chiklis and yes, Walton Goggins showed some of the best acting of last year on the tube. I promise you! Yes, you need the weight of the entire series to truly convey the emotion displayed in s.6, but fantastic acting is exactly that and can't be debated. I enjoy Heroes as a fan of superheroes in general, but it's so fun to see The Shield get better each season; where most shows spin their wheels and struggle to get to a point where a series finale is a major payoff. This last season of The Shield should be epic.

Zoom Back to the 70's - hmmmmmmm

    by damitol

Damn! Your stupid article just made me remember my first TV crush. Nina was on the first season of Zoom, she was a 13 year old "woman" who played guitar and made me realize girls weren't so icky after all. I seriously can't believe I remember her name after all this time. So now the question becomes, do I buy this set in the name of “nostalgia", or do I avoid it like the plague because I feel really pervy right now for wanting to check out a 13 year old former crush?
