ABC Greenlights To Series Rob Thomas’ CUPID Remake And New Nathan Fillion And Amber Tamblyn Cop Shows!!

Published at:  Aug 25, 2008 9:18:52 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

ABC just announced it’s taking three drama pilots to series:

1) “Veronica Mars” mastermind Rob Thomas’ remake of his ‘90s hourlong “Cupid,” this time starring Bobby Cannavale (“Snakes on a Plane”) and Sarah Paulson (“Studio 60”) in the Jeremy Piven and Paula Marshall roles.

2) “Castle,” a Nathan Fillion vehicle, from writer Andrew W. Marlowe (“Air Force One,” “End of Days,” “Hollow Man”) about a novelist who helps the New York police.

3) The ensemble police drama “The Unusuals,” from writer-producers Noah Hawley ("Bones") and Peter Tolan ("The Larry Sanders Show," "Rescue Me"). The pilot starred Amber Tamblyn (“Joan of Arcadia”), Harold Perrineau (“Lost”), Adam Goldberg (“Zodiac,” “Entourage”) and Terry Kinney (“Canterbury’s Law”).

The network is also taking to series two sitcoms:

1) The corporate-ladder saga "Better Off Ted," from writer-producer Victor Fresco ("Andy Richter Controls The Universe"), starring Jay Harrington ("The Inside").

2) The career-girl comedy "Single With Parents," from writer-producer Kristin Newman ("How I Met Your Mother"), starring Alyssa Milano ("Charmed").

    At Least 4 actually

    by the pelti

I was just up in New York this past weekend, reminiscing about trying to figure out which timeslot Cupid was in during any given week, with 2 of my friends. I'm pretty sure every episode was on a different night of the week.

Don't know how a remake will do, but hopefully it brings the original on DVD/BluRay

"Nathan Fillion vehicle". I like the sound of that.

    by bravogolfhotel

But it's being written by Andrew Marlowe? Yikes. That guy could fuck up a grocery list.

    Castle!

    by admiralneck

As slfricky has already said, that sounds suspiciously like Murder She Wrote meets Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Which is already a great concept for a show and that's before you add Fillion. As long as it allows him to be as funny as he can be (i.e. highly funny), it'll be great.

Cupid, New Fantasy Island, Now And Again...

    by dp4m

... three GREAT shows that came out roughly within the same timeframe (within a year of each other) and had brilliant writing and great casts so were naturally killed off early on in their runs. ABC and CBS can DIAF for their shortsightedness...

    Nathan Fillion

    by skimn

A horror novelist helping out the police? WWSKD...yes, what would Stephen King do...Well, I've heard flakier concepts. As stated earlier it better include Fillion's dry humor. Loved Slither for that reason.

    The Ghost Writer

There was a pilot in the 80s where Anthony Perkins was a horror novelist that solved crimes. It was a comedy. My, how original.

    The Nathan Fillion show

    by silentp

doesn't sound that interesting to me, but I will support anything with Nathan Fillion, that man deserves to become a much bigger star then he is. He really is like a second coming of Harrison Ford, it's depressing he's not getting cast in much better roles.

...knew you must be out there somewhere...nice to finally meet you. The chemistry between Jeremy Piven and Paula Marshall was the best part of the show though, so a remake?...not sure......at all.

excited about the Nathan Fillion show...

    by killdozer

but I really can't imagine why the police would need a horror writer to give them a hand (unless there's something supernatural afoot?)I hope Pete Tolan's cop show will have some of the great humor that 'The Job' had. 'Rescue Me' is good (was good? haven't been able to watch since season 2), but I thought the dark humor of Dennis Leary's downward spiral in 'The Job' was a lot more entertaining to watch than his humorless self-destruction in 'Rescue Me'. Also, they should bring back Frank.

    Castle- Nathan F. show

    by capnbludd

He's a mystery writer, not horror.
I've seen the pilot as part of a market research thing and it isn't bad. I just hope they get rid of his annoying mother.

Still surprised that Cupid 2.0 happened...

    by prof. pop-cult

This makes you wonder: The recent talk about Rob Thomas wanting to do a Veronica Mars movie doesn't seem far fetched at all, when you consider the fact that he managed to revive an old series idea of his that wasn't even watched by many in its original run.

    Fillion Pilot has Problems

    by little miss lillian

Now I love Fillion as much as the next girl, but the pilot has serious problems, the foremost being the lack of chemistry with the leading lady. I don't really blame Nathan, the actress is simply not believable as a hard boiled no nonsense cop, and thus, the rest of the aspects of the character lack realism. It needs a little recasting work...

From the market research questions, ABC is obviously wanting to position this as the next Moonlighting or Remington Steele....that is the tone that they are going for.

How's she looking these days ? I'm not ashamed to admit I rubbed a couple out to Joan of Arcadia ... I hope it didn't anger God. She was kind of starting to chunk out last time I saw her, though.

Fillon is awesome and should be a star. But for some reason everything he touches, whether good or shit, fails.

Sorry, but both Paulson and Fillion are showkillers.

    by annoyyou

I give each of their series about six episodes before they're yanked. Particularly "Cupid" - the original was great, but it tanked, too. There's something inherently flawed about the concept. I have no love for Thomas, whom I believed willfully turned VM into a piece of shit, but Cannavale deserves better.

I always thought Cupid could work as a movie...

    by prof. pop-cult

The whole concept screams rom-com movie: Guy who thinks he's Cupid has to hook up 100 people within the movie's 2-hour running time.

this Nathan Fillion project will be good and like everything that is good (journeyman) or has Nathan Fillion in it (firefly, drive) it will be shit-canned after 13 eps (4 for drive).
Give me straight to dvd firefly movies, 3 a year would be good. Fillion is a true star yet he never gets a chance to shine.

    The Original Cupid was awesome

    by the fightin weasel

I am torn between feeling vindicated for proclaiming ABC idiots for not giving Cupid (original recipe) a longer run and doubting that this "new" Cupid will not live up to the original. The chemistry between Piven and Paula Marshall was pitch perfect. So, I have a hard time believing the new cast will be as solid. That being said, my biggest concern actually comes from the information I read about the show's location being moved to LA. It just feels off to me. I'll hope for the best, but I have major doubts.

Why is he stuck doing shitty TV shows? That guys deserves to be a star. Oh well, I'll be watching Castle and Cupid strictly out of loyalty to him and Thomas. But gah, I really wish they were doing more interesting projects.

    Itchy, Amber is looking fine.

    by v'shael

She's not as youthful looking as she was when she played Joan, but she's still cute in the girl-next-door kind of way.

As for chunky? Hell no. I'd have preferred her if she went that route myself. Keep those babyfat cheeks. If anything, I think she's looking a little underfed. Your milage may vary.
