    Uhhh....WHY??

    by doc_valor

A Final Fantasy movie would be great, but if it's a whole new story with new characters, then what is the point???
Will anyone even LIKE these new characters??
Final Fantasy hit it's height of popularity when FF7 came out and I think *THAT* is what they should make a movie about - it's a sure bet!

I just imagine a CGI Red running around, Tom Cruise or some well known actor as Vincent Valentine
and Tifa Lockhart as an actual human!
Oh, and to tick every fanboy gamer off even more...we can cast Leonardo Di Caprio as Cloud Strife. :)

In the words of Johnny Storm -Flame ON!

    video game movies

    by lron

if there's one thing hollywood has proven it's that movies based on video games are rarely successful. fans of the video game usually feel betrayed by the plotline (watered down for the screen) and regular moviegoers usually find the films to be too dorky or maybe just too hard to grasp.

but this does have some big names attached to it. then again "street fighter" starred the late great raul julia.

    FF the movie

    by hotwire

this movie is not being done by hollywood, this is squares's baby all the way, the players paly by their rules. Final fantisy has (at least since the second one we got in the US) always been about story and plot, its an interactive movie. each game in the seriese has had new and interesting characters, and the stories themselves have only become more and more impressave. I mean i know two people who actualy teared up at the end of FF7 disk one (yes Im being intintonaly vauge to avoid spoiling the shock for anyone who hasent played yet) if anyone can pull off a good story I beleave its the scribes that have brought us Crono triger, FF2,3&7, Secret of Mana, Parasite Eve, and Xenogears. I have no doubt that this movie will Rock.

    The writer of this film?

    by whitey

I read on Corona I think that Jeff Vintar was writing this one. He's the guy Cinescape tore apart a few months ago over his Iron Man script. After reading that eviscerating review of theirs and skimming a few pages of the Iron Man script a buddy of mine scored at a comic convention, I have some pretty hefty reservations about him being this film's writer. I just found him to be lacking, just my opinion now but it's a valid one given what I've read. Anybody know if he's still onboard or if this is a whole new script? Just wondering what's up.

    FF movie

    by vikram_vampire

Y'know, i've heard so much negativity being thrown around since this movie was announced that i'm actually starting to believe that it will be a pile of shit.

Hey, y'never know - maybe it'll turn out to be quite good, and then i'll be pleasantly surprised........

Oh - and Hotwire - for f*cks sake learn to spell. Thankee kindly.

Was I the only one who hated Final Fantasy 7?

    by spike lee

Don't get me wrong the game was beautiful, but I didn't enjoy the gameplay. My favorite RPG of all time is Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System, remember that one. It was the first game that cost like $80, and was worth every penny. Speaking of Square, I heard that Madonna has bought the rights to Parasite Eve.

    Alec Baldwin and Steve Buscemi?

    by zereph

Somehow I just don't see them working well in a fantasy/scifi setting although they are both excellent actors. Rutger Hower HAS to be in this movie in order for it to be good.

    Final Fantasy is...

    by magusreno

They of course are never going to make a movie based on FF7 because that game has already been released and they have already milked that one to its full potential. They're probably going to release the movie alongside FF9 for the PSX and make alot more money than they would have had they made it based on FF7 or 8. Besides, Square has always insisted on creating new characters each game instead of bringing back old ones countless times. (not including Cid and others) Isn't this one supposed to take place in NY? That should be cool... The pictures and videos that we've seen so far of the new movie look breathtaking, I'm sure it'll look spectacular.

    Final SCI-FI

    by dolfanar

This movie reportadly takes place in 22nd century New York with a 5th Element type plot. All in all 5th element was enjoyable mostly for its stunning and original visuals (including Mila Jovovich), very much reminiscent of Anime, all framed by bruce Willis doing DIE HARD best to keep the action rolling. I enjoyed 5th element (far more than the sluggishly paced Phantom Menace) but I sincerly doubt that the squaresoft boys will be able to provide the kind of kinetics that is needed to keep an eye-candy fest moving along. The final fantasies have ALWAYS been targeted towards the kiddies.(Granted Japanese kids are fed MUCH less pablum in entertainment than American ones) I just don't see them pulling it off. One thing that bugs me MOST about the Final Fantasy series lately is that it has slowly shed any FANTASY elements from its games. I sincerly hope that LotR revitalizes the traditional fantasy (and dark fantasy (a la Conan) genre, or fans like me will be stuck with pure shit like Hercules, Xena, and *shudder* SinBAD...

    BTW Spike Lee

    by dolfanar

I never even finished FF7. I like my video games a *little* more interactive. Managing fights and trucking my guy's to the next cut-scene is not my idea of an "RPG". The last FF that I thoroughly enjoyed was FF4 (FF2 in the US), ofcourse I was a fair bit younger then...

What can i say those are great actors both comedicly and drama-wise.
I have been a fan of the game series and if FF the movie is even half as good as FFVII we will be in for a treat. :-)

    Musical Score

    by msommet

Does anybody know if Square (read: Nobuo Uematsu- he rocks!) will do the score on their own? If so, will it be a completely new score or will they use themes from the video game series? Just wondering... the music has always been very important to me when playing the games.

    Yeah, alright!!!!!

    by cliffemall

A CGI Final Fantasy film! Well if this dosen't kick some major butt I don't know what will! The Final Fantasy games play like an interactive movie, so this game is of the ideal format to be made into a film. I only hope that they don't screw it up. We have all seen some of the other computer game to cinema conversions....oh no....I think I'm going to be sick.......

    What I thinks

    by gary2012

Videogame companies are being a lot more responsible with their licenses. Capcom learned their lesson with Street Fighter, and retained total control over the Resident Evil movie, and then did an even smarter thing and handed that control to George Romero. That movie will be great. Final Fantasy is Squares' bread and butter, so I don't think that they would risk ruining the series reputation with a crap movie. If they plan on making more FF games in the future they stand to lose a lot more money in that, than they would gain by throwing together a cheap crapfest to capitalize on the name. My only problem so far is the casting of Steve Buscemi. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love him, but I think that his voice is so distinctive that it will just be distracting, because it will always be "the voice of Steve Buscemi" and not whatever character he is playing. Then again he might surprise me. At least I only have a great guy like him to worry about so far. Sounds good to me.

Final Fantasy and a history lesson

    by cav

Boys ang gals : there has only been ONE, count them ONE, successful video game converstion to a movie. I mean REALLY successful. I'm not talking Mortal Kombat successful, I'm talking the big bucks. Anyone nail it yet? Of course not because its Pokemon. That's right that little yellow electric mouse is the only thing to pull it off so far (and yes the game came before the show). Wing Commander I think had the most potential, but Chris Roberts blew that one big time. First off, for those mentioning FF7 was not all it was cracked up to be, you are dead on right. FF7 was inferior in every way outside graphics to previous FF games (FF6 I think was the height of the series with FF4 just slightly behind it) . Second off, the FF7 cutscenes are NOT all they're cracked up to be. I don't want to see an entire movie of polygons lacking the meariest hint of emotion. They may be nice eyecandy, but when it comes to emotion those polygons just won't cut it. Want to see real emotional cutscenes? Play Lunar. Next up, and this is something Square is dreading you learn of, there already was a Final Fantasy movie and it stunk to high heaven. Yep Square actually screwed up an anime fantasy movie. If they couldn't make a good fantasy movie with anime, the forum best suited for fantasy, I have little hope they're going to pull this one off. Especially after reading the cast list. Ok granted they have some top names on there, but it seems they went out and nabbed big name stars instead of finding the appropriate voices. I just have a feeling about this. I already don't like this whole New York City thing. The whole movie just has an aura around it that makes me say "avoid like the plague." I'm already thinking twice about rushing out to buy FF8. After playing Lunar, FF7 seemed so meak in comparison. It had wonderful characters and story and had the emotion FF7 seemed to be lacking. Square just hasn't produced the goods in awhile except possibly Xenogears, and even then it showed signs that the genious of Square has been lost. Finally, why make a movie like this after the games? I'd rather play a game that has a great quality story so I can interact with it then just see a movie. I pray they prove me wrong, I really do. I know at one point Square could've made a great movie, but now it seems they're willing to sacrifice anything to make money. Like in Final Fantasy 7, their last minute decision to add in Tifa and... well you know what happened to the other main female character, and have Tifa take the place as Cloud's romance shows they were trying the "Lara Croft" approach. Hey if it gets the good reviews I'll check it out. Most likely I'll stick to renting Slayers at the local video store.

so unless I see a movie based on "The Orciania of Time" nothing for me to get a hard on about. (unless they release SMASH BROS. the movie. wahoooo!) PS- Ep. 1 Racer is cool (still like the "Pod Racer" name better orginally, though)

    FF8 is the best game.

    by morrigan

I've beat FF8 already, and it's a great game - those who say that video games should not be made into movies should play this game first before saying that the stories just won't cut it.

I have high hopes for this one...

    by henry fool

I thought Final Fantasy VII was the best game of the series, and not because of the graphics. The characters had much more depth than any of the previous games. While the game was too linear, compared to FF6, it is important to remember that FF6 (FF3 in the U.S.) kind of fell apart in terms of story when the world was wrecked. FF7, despite a flawed translation, affected me more in terms of drama than any of the previous games. It also boasted a far more superior reference to mythology than anything ever created by a man whose initials are GL. However, I'm glad that the first FF movie will be an original plot. Each FF game features a new cast of characters. The only thing linking them are certain spells, chocobo birds, and a character named Cid (who is completely different in each game, except for the name.)

When will you people realize that tremendous potential has been blown by not using Eric Estrada in this movie. He lobbied and petitioned all of the involved casting agents and was snubbed and you people ignored his cries for help and now what do you have????
    NOTHING!!!!
I am a director/screenwriter/music producer and I will use Eric on every opportunity. You people have looked greatness in the eye and didn't even even know it. I pity you shortsighted simpletons.

    by lennyc3

Very funny. I will address you concerning Mr. Estrada via your own email. As for your apparent lack of knowledge in the world of entertainment, Mr. Estrada IS currently slated to be in a TNT movie based on the life of Enrico Fermi. As for your lack of respect for the FF series I can only say, get with it! I think it'll be cool as heck.

    Final Fantasy VII . . .

    by werewolfling

Why wouldn't they make a FFVII movie? They made one of FFV, after all . . . true, it was only released on video (check the anime section) But, none-the-less, I would buy a FFVII OAV in a heartbeat, guarenteed. But this new movie . . . It better be good!
    Later.
