Kevin Smith was on Los-Angeles’ KROQ-FM Friday, and apparently told the deejays off-mike that he saw a rough cut of J.J. Abrams’ new “Star Trek” movie Thursday night.
An excerpt from the on-mike radio conversion, per trekmovie.com:
Host: So thumbs up on The Watchmen, what else you got?
Smith: I saw a movie last night that I cannot talk about.
Host: Was it good?
Smith: It was phenomenal.
Host: Any stars, any break out stars, and do they trek?

He said the same thing about Daredevil and a few other bad movies i can't think of off the top of my head. He's constantly endorsing this or that fanboy property. He's like Harry in that he's just an overexcited non discerning fanboy. If you can't take Harry's reviews seriously, then trust me Smiths are no better. plus he's friends with all the guys he sees the movies of, which sort of lacks a certain sense of objectivity. Im not saying Star Trek isnt good or even great, but Kevin Smith of all the people is one of the last guys on Earth we should be trusting. I mean the man made Clerks 2 for chrissakes.

I heard the Kevin Smith interview on KROQ, and he uses the word "phenomenal" as freely as Quentin Tarantino punctuates his sentences with "OK? Alright?" which is to say, with every breath. So it's hard to give his rave reviews too much credibility, but I'm still hoping he's right about Watchmen.
But on a podcast his producing buddy (who reportedly hates almost everything) says he loved Watchmen. apparently he went to the same screening KS did.

because, after watching it a couple of weeks ago I couldn't believe I'd enjoyed it the first time round. With a clearer head all the flaws came to light. Some major sequences involving characters' deaths were practically swept aside; namely *SPOILERs* Cyclops. It wasn't even explicit he was dead until the final few frames. Jean's return felt like a zero event, and the major players' reactions to it were unbelivable. The plot was poor and the climax was almost pointless. Bad guys kill the kid, stop the cure, Good guys save the kis, stop the cure. Zero character development in other areas. It was a fucking horrible movie. Star Trek on the other hand i look forward to despite not really enjoying Cloverfield, and some of Smith's stuff is quite good.

Now I agree that I couldn't make a convincing romantic comedy (mostly because I don't believe in romantic love; I believe in lust and fleeting connections based on physicality only; everything else is illusion; any romantic comedy I made would turn out like Eyes Wide Shut) but clearly neither can Smith if Jersey Churl was any indication. It's just a bad, baaaad movie; a movie so sugary / syrupy and forced it nearly gave me diabetes.

The only problem is that the film was as bad as AOTC. Seriously, do people even watch ROTS anymore? Or AOTC? Those films were both forgettable. And X-Men 3 was one of the biggest let-downs I've ever seen after Singer had established two very good X-Men films. So, anyone who claims X3, AOTC, and ROTS is simply not critically reviewing films. Star Trek has a very good chance of being terrible. -
I never watch TPM or AOTC though. They're both excruciatingly awful. As a lifelong fan of Star Wars, ROTS gave me all I needed or wanted to see in a prequel. Its the only prequel that lives up to the awesome of the originals. The only one worth watching more than once.

Episode 3, along with 1 and 2, sucked balls. X-TLS was crap. Dare Devil was watchable. Anyway,...Jay and Silent Bob rocked this f'ing world. Wish that movie was twice as long as it was. Dogma rocked. Clerks (the first one) was great. The second Clerks was ATM and not in a good way.

This new Trek is being done by J.J. Abrams, the creator of the greatest show on television right now (LOST), so I'm comfortable that the franchise is in good hands. And by the way, Revenge of the Sith was great! I've watched it dozens of times since its release on DVD.

TPM and AOTC especially are just really bad movies no matter how you slice it. ROTS was great, though. I'll defend that one to the end; cringe-worthy dialogue and all it was a great movie; and the best Star Wars movie since ESB. But there's nothing redeeming about TPM or AOTC. 11th hour action set-pieces notwithstanding, they're just bad movies.

I don't like a single one of his movies, and so I find it suprising that Kevin Smith and I seem to have the EXACT same taste in movies and tv shows. If Kevin Smith says that he say Star Trek, and he says that it was terrific, then I know that Star Trek is terrific. Why doesn't he with his great taste join the small but elite group of excellent Sci Fi storytellers? He knows how to make movies and he knows it when he sees a truly great Science Fiction movie, why not combine those rare gifts and make a truly great science fiction movie. I would for the first time in my life pay money to watch a Kevin Smith movie in the theater.

He ran into Zack Snyder at Comic Con or something, and Zack had heard him on a previous SModcast talking about the Watchmen movie. So he invited Smith and a plus one to see the movie. So they did, and they talk about it in this weeks SModcast. Short review... it follows the graphic novel to a T, even more so than Sin City followed its source.
Everything you loved about Watchmen is in the movie. And the movie is Dope (which is Smiths current synonym for a positive adjective.) -

For a chunk of change. Fox may be hardcore, but ultimately, they know (and a judge will know) if they wanted to protect their property, they should have said something before the movie was completed.
I doubt they'd get more than $50 million as a settlement, which will pretty much guarantee that the movie will be a flop financially, as the easiest thing to do is cut short the marketing budget. -
So true! In fact, most of the films that have been released fit somewhere in-between. There are very few "great" movies and a somewhat larger group of "terrible" films. Most are in a huge gray line in-between. Like you said, it seems like most of the TBers are so dichotic that they only see things via extremes. There are plenty of movies that I didn't care for. I seriously doubt, however, that many of them earn the dubious "worst film" status that is so readily spewed here. With all of this sort of rhetoric, from the "George Lucas RAPED my childhood" nonsense to the polar opposite "chocolate-covered pussy juice" exaggerations -- it is difficult to find a person who reviews a film honestly. I think that this is why I enjoy read Richard Roeper's reviews. He doesn't pretend like every movie is supposed to "out do" any other film. He doesn't act like it is the end of the world simply because Star Wars prequels were less-reflective of the originals. He reviews a movie on the basis of what it is: A form of art for which the entire production team (from the writers, directors, actors, composers, producers, etc...) are hoping to make a fortune. I'm not a Trekkie, but I did enjoy Trek 2, 3, 4, 6 and First Contact (and to a lesser extent, Trek 1 and Generations). However, I really hope to enjoy this Abrams film. If I don't, it certainly isn't the end of the world. Star Trek is bigger than a bad film (Trek 5 or Insurrection). And I hardly think that Abrams is a "piss poor director" simply because some people didn't like some of his work. I happen to enjoy his projects (especially LOST and MI:3). But even if I didn't, I don't think that it is correct to stereotype one director by a single film. George Lucas turned out some great films before the original Star Wars films (American Graffiti, THX 1138) and afterward (Last Crusade, Willow) before his lesser films (the prequels and Howard the Duck). Francis Ford Coppola had some great films (The Godfather, The Godfather part 2 and Peggy Sue Got Married) as well as some not-as-great films (The Godfather 3, Jack, The Rainmaker). Do we judge the Cohen Bros by THE LADYKILLERS and THE HUDSUCKER PROXY or NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and FARGO? The point is that a single director can create a great work, an utterly terrible work and far more typical, many works that lay somewhere in-between.

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is riding on the success or failure of this movie. The entire future of Star Trek rests on the shoulders of J.J. Abrams and company. Star Trek 2009 will either reinvent the franchise or kill it. Nothing more, nothing less. And if it fails, we'll NEVER see another Star Trek on the big screen again. Man, the Star Trek fans must be tossing and turning in their Superman bed sheets at night. They're destracted from their day-to-day duties. Starbucks coffee cups are running over like broken levees.

Everything good about Cloverfield is in the original trailer and the online viral stuff. The actual movie, sadly, SUCKED. It wanted so badly to be this awesome post-modern deconstruction of the giant monster thing and failed so utterly in this attempt. Bad, unlikeable characters doing stuff that NOBODY would do in real life, being presented as "realistic"? Please. EPIC FAIL.
Although it did make a lot of money, so clearly, there are a lot of 13 year olds out there who will buy ANYTHING they're told to like. -

The only TRUE Trek is the OS, everything after that is just also-ran concept cashing. Still love the old shows, watch one about every other day, makes me happy. I'll see the new flick no doubt, but's all about the big three:Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley.

As a big Lost fan I can name several shows better than Lost. Battlestar Galactica is so far beyond Lost it isn't funny, and Deep Space Nine was also much better- just it had a more specific apeal than Lost, Lost reaches a broader audience than any of these. And I read from another post someone point out that Abrams neither directed nor wrote Cloverfield- I'm a little embarassed to admit that this came as news to me. I always felt like Cloverfield was a dark smudge on JJ Abrams record, and I am so relieved to see that he can almost completely wash his hands of that putrid display. Another poster here challenged the "undeserved respect" people have for Abrams, and that Lost is overhyped. I have to say that he may be right. I don't know just how much influence Abrams had on Lost, and even now after years of watching the show, I am not positive it is as good as I seem to think it is, whereas with BSG- I am positive- it is really good. I am extremely confident that this Star Trek will be good- everything I have seen and heard about it looks dead on, and then I will know one way or another how good of a story teller Abrams is.

I think you hit the nail on the head with JJ. He's not Satan but he also hasn't really been tested. I like Lost but I never got into any of his other shows. Again, he's only one of many people responsible for Lost so whatever you think about that show JJ is only partially responsible. I also got a sinking feeling when I saw Cloverfield, which was an awful film. Luckily he doesn't take all the blame since he was only a producer. This Trek film will be his first true test.

I've never watched the new BSG series (I'm a big fan of the campy 1970s version, however), but I did catch the 2004 BSG pilot and wasn't impressed. I've heard the show is really good, so maybe I'll check it out on DVD (are new episodes still airing?). The pilot just felt too Blade Runner-like to me.

By all means watch the show more if you feel that you could like it. I myself was not a fan of the 1970s show, but I always felt that there was a seed of greatness in that story idea. This new show has completely confirmed that. Ever since "Aliens" I have been waiting oh so patiently for a movie to come out that was as dark and powerful of a science fiction story as "Aliens" was. It has been a loooong grueling wait, and I just got more and more sick as movies like Battlefield Earth and Independance Day starting to become the norm. Then all of a sudden Battlestar Galactica came out, and I believed that my long wait was over- here was a space science fiction tv show which felt almost as believable as Alien and Aliens. It is very well written, very well acted, and very well art directed. On top of all that, the show has what I think are the most skillfully created space fighting shots that I have EVER seen. There simply is no science fiction movie that has come out in many many years that matches the quality in any of these areas that Battlestar Galactica accomplishes in just about EVERY single episode. It is remarkable to see something so terrific during years of garbage entertainment. After all this is said, I am still hesitant to say that this has fully matched "Alien" and "Aliens". I simply do not understand why movies of that calibur are so extremely rare. I blame that on the general public's willingness to go all the way to the theater to see movies like 10,000 BC. In any case- I am not sure if Battlestar Galactica is flawlessly perfect, but it is so incredibly good, it stands among the few best stories ever created. However, if you saw the pilot miniseries and you didn't like it, I'm not sure if you will like the show itself, because I think the miniseries reflects the show very well. However the miniseries is certainly not the best part of the show by a long shot- there are episodes within the show that are truly fantastic. One of the most powerful scenes I have ever seen in any movie happens in one of the early episodes of season 3. Anybody that watches BSG knows exactly what I am talking about, and I know that it is Kevin Smith's favorite part of BSG as well. Anyway, I don't see how this show could be compared to Blade Runner really, if that displeases you, trust me that isn't the case. And yes they are still making the show, but they are down to their last 14 episodes to go. I am so happy they are ending it here as well because the story needed to end about this time- the writers and Ronald Moore have handled this whole show with taste and excellent timing. I hope that my description of this show encourages even more people to seek this gem out- if you love space- you probably will be so grateful you discovered it. Let me put it this way- if you love both "Alien" and "Star Wars" (original trilogy) I don't see how you could possibly not love Battlestar Galactica- that to me is unthinkable.

I am a big fan of LOST. However, the success of the show has less to do with Abrams' direction than it does with the beginning, middle and ending that he created. However, I have to say that Mission Impossible 3 was, by far, the only really great film of that franchise. In fact, MI:3 ranks up there with CASINO ROYALE as my favorite spy/action flick. If Abrams can do for Star Trek what he did for MI:3 -- I would be extremely pleased. MI:3 should have made a fortune (and probably would have, notwithstanding Tom Cruise's "Scientology" episode on the Today Show). I just hope that Trek can pull it off with the public. It needs to pull in $200 -- and I am afraid that it might not be able to do that even with a great film. The Trek franchise just doesn't have enough fans to make a blockbuster. If this film doesn't create new fans, then I have a bad feeling about this film. I am hoping for the best, though! I have full confidence in Abrams' ability. I just don't have as much confidence in the market for Star Trek itself.

Well, yes, yes they did. Almost 80% means 4 stars, which ROTS certainly doesn't deserve. I'd give it a fair 2.5
As for better shows on TV than Lost, I prefer House, Dexter and BSG - and that's just recent stuff off the top of my head. -

If every critic gave a movie 3 out of 5 stars, the Tomato-meter would be 100% even though the average score was 60%. ROTS's average score was 72% which is still high but closer to fair. I'm with Amy Chasing, I'd give ROTS a decent 2.5. Equal parts good and bad.

Star Trek is such a major franchise that it will never really die. DS9 serves as the only real fail-safe available if the new players fail to make the iconic characters of TOS connect with the audience.IMHO if this movie goes bust, a DS9 film, with its recognizable players and universe, will give TPTB what is needed to keep Trek going -- a solid place to rebuild from and a jumping off point to do something new, based on continuity with what has worked before.

Hey, for the record, I am not "hating" on Kevin Smith, nor am I a "fucking clown shoe". I was a fan of the first Clerks. It was ballsy, and funny. Mallrats happened right after that tho...and to be honest the "studio wouldn't let me do what I wanted" arguement DOES have some merit. Chasing Amy, great movie. Dogma? Meh. Over-pontificating crap dialogue-ing "I hate religion" faux "film-with-a-message". And who the fuck names an angel after a Norse god? Just silly. I really REALLY like Kevin Smith himself, funy guy. His films are just to uneven for me. (I thought Jersey Girl was pretty underrated, though, so what the fuck do I know? My wife liked it...). Thing is, I hate the fact that some of us seem to think we need KEvin's geek stamp of approval, or that his approval means WE are finally allowed to like it. Fuck all that. Lets just go see the movie, and come here and bitch about what we did or didn't like right after. Like we always do.

Smith's opinions have no effect on me deciding wether or not I ould see Trek or Watchmen as I could care less for ST.He did a decent job while interviewing Willis on the studios lot (Die hard 4 Bonus Disc.)with the noted exception of too many F-bombs and kissassery.
Other than that, he's still a hack andthe only thing I would be jealous of is seeing a advanced viewing of Watchmen (and I'm sure that shit will evetually leak on the net should those Fox fuckheads prevent Warner from releasng the film.)and certainly not his Movie career. -

After Clerks I think An Evening with Kevin Smith is probably his best work, Chasing Amy and Dogma aren't far behind...Jersey Girl is unfairly criticized as it such a departure from his previous work....as for his acting, I look forward to seeing him pop up in films,I liked the cameo in Veronica Mars,Daredevil and in Die Hard, he wasn't bad in Catch and Release either...I look forward to seeing more of him...HOWEVER in the end his opinion is just that
