Absolutely right about the west coast coverage! NBC's Olympic coverage for the west coast was obsurd. When Phelps is going for his record 8th gold, it was roughly 10pm EST which is 7pm PST. So why was it covered live on the east coast? What was the fucking ratings juggernaut that couldn't be postponed at 7pm on a saturday on the west coast? They actually started our delayed coverage in time that they could have at least gone to a live feed for that event but instead we were stuck watching the damned marathon and the previous day's 100m disappointment that was Tyson Gay.

Well, its not like a person can criticize China while in China. If you don't get arrested, or silently beaten by the Triads hired by Gov't officials, then they'll just boot your ass out of the country. Rob Riggle with The Daily Show was over there, and did a straight interview with, I believe, the AP. He told them how it was impossible for them to get interviews with any regular citizens - because they would all run in fear when they turned on the camera.

But look what it was up against. Here in LA, we had repeats of Two and a Half Men, Extreme Makeover Home Edition, and Extra. Seriously, the Olympics were a nice change of pace from the mandatory entertainment shows no-one here really cares about but are all forced to watch. I am sure MASH would have gotten spectacular ratings too, if it were going up against it's toughest challenger in the form of a lifetime movie. So, a little perspective I guess is in order. If that writers strike hadn't happened, I think the ratings would have been different.

OK, I read your original post in which you said Obama said China was "great" and we should "be more like China". Yet, the video clip you posted has Obama saying that China has invested a ton of money in infrastructure to the point that it is now superior to ours, and suggesting we should also be investing more in infrastructure.

How exactly is that saying China as a whole is "great"? Are you suggesting that we can't possibly look at things other countries do and compare it to what we do, and wonder why we aren't putting the same focus on it.

And I mean, we're talking about infrastructure here. Roads, bridges, highways, etc. that are vital to our operation as a country. This is hardly some commie/socialist issue or something, and it's hardly a new issue either; it was a major topic of discussion after the Minnesota Bridge Collapse. Plenty of people from all political stripes have suggested we're making a major mistake in not investing more in improving and maintaining our infrastructure.

So seriously, instead of seeing something and going "OMG!?!?!?!!??! HE SAID SOMETHING POSITIVE ABOUT SOMETHING RELATED TO CHINA?!?!? HE MUST THINK EVERYTHING ABOUT CHINA IS GREAT AND WE SHOULD BECOME COMMUNIST WORKER'S PARADISE", you might want to actually consider the point being made and debate that.

Don't think we should invest more in infrastructure? Fine. Then say that. Say "Obama is such a damned fool, wants us to spend more on infrastructure.". But why make yourself look to be ignorant by making a statement that seems to show a fundamental lack of understanding of even a 27 second YouTube video clip?

Geez, everything just has to have a superfluous superlative headline nowadays just to be reported. Especially an erroneous one. The Chinese spent 40 billion of an economy 1/6 the size of ours. 1.5 million were forcibly relocated in order to do the work. China suspended reconstruction in the ruined Szechuan province where the massive earthquake was in order to rebuild Beijing. Factories surrounding the area were ordered to close 2 months before the olympics and 1 million cars were ordered off the road in order to clear the air of it's horrible pollution. There is absolutely nothing about China that the US should try to emulate. Although, imagine how our economy were to boom if we had no environmental regulation, no wage laws, no OSHA, no drilling regulations, or no ability to oppose big business in any way.

The UK intro to 2012 was an embarrassment. I have nothing against them but , using an old Rocker and an X Factor winner to promote the games ...wtf!!! The confused arseholeship which was the London display was only saved by Beckham kicking a football. We really haven't got a clue.

I take my position from directly what Obama said, not what I think he meant.

"Think about how much money China has spent on infrastructure."
-At the expense of their people.
What gets me is when he asks, "why aren't we doing the same thing?"

In no way should we EVER try to emulate China. How is it that bleeding heart liberals are blind to the human rights violations of the ChiComs? But it probably only happens when it goes against what their Messiah is saying.

Sure, it would be great if we could put more money into our infrastructure. But not to the extent that the Chinese have done. Everything that Obama knows about China, he watched on the Olympics. He has a lovely little image that the Chinese government controlled media has placed in his head.

Some of the Michael Bay's additions to the Olympics.
    1. All the sports will be changed to match this title scheme: AWESOME Swimming, AWESOME Gymnastics, AWESOME Rowing, AWESOME Beach Volleyball, and AWESOME Equestrian.
    2. Simple things will be replaced with HUGE explosions. The starting blocks will explode after the swimmers dive off them. The gymnastics bars will flame and spark. The river on which the rowers race will be ON FIRE. The volleyball in Beach Volleyball will be a ticking time bomb. The horses will EXPLODE in the Equestrian events.

    It will be AWESOME.

"I take my position from directly what Obama said, not what I think he meant."

He explained what he meant, but you choose to ignore it. Why? Ignorance, or whatever people like you get up and eat for breakfast.

"'Think about how much money China has spent on infrastructure.'

-At the expense of their people."

Motherfucker; did you miss the part where a bridge collapsed in Minneapolis and killed people? THAT'S AN EXPENSE AS FUCKING WELL, BUT YOU IGNORE THIS FACT. You act like those people never died. When in fact it was Republican policies that led to the expense of those peoples' lives.

"What gets me is when he asks, 'why aren't we doing the same thing?'"

We are arrogant and think we have nothing to gain from the world's OLDEST CULTURE. Seriously; you need to pay more attention.

"In no way should we EVER try to emulate China. How is it that bleeding heart liberals are blind to the human rights violations of the ChiComs?"

What does infastructure have to do with human rights violations? Oh yeah bright boy... ever heard or read about GITMO? Ever heard or read about all of those SECRET DETAINEE FACILITIES through out the world? We are not exactly leading the way in human rights these days buck-o.

"But it probably only happens when it goes against what their Messiah is saying."

Read this twice you stupid cunt because people like you really need a kick to the larnyx. WE WANT TO BELIEVE IN THIS COUNTRY BEING AWESOME AGAIN! BEING SOMETHING MORE and we found a guy who could make it happen, and you give us shit for it? Really? Fuck you. Fuck you and everyone who thinks like you.

It does not make you evil. It does not make you scum. It only makes you cynical enough and dull enough not to get that people want to see this country stand for what it should stand for again. Unlike what it stands for now: shitty economy, turning into a police state, and so on and so forth.

"Sure, it would be great if we could put more money into our infrastructure. But not to the extent that the Chinese have done."

YES WE SHOULD! Do you know what makes this country move? THE FUCKING INFRASTRUCTURE? You know why every fucking disaster movie is bullshit? IT UNDER-ESTIMATES THIS COUNTRY'S INFRASTRUCTURE! If we do not sustain, make it stronger, and keep the trains and trucks rolling. We might as will give up on being a super power, because it's that infrastructure that got us to where we were before BUSH DEUCE in the first place.

"Everything that Obama knows about China, he watched on the Olympics."

No; that would be GEORGE DEUCE. Obama is a man of the WORLD not just the US. This is why he scares you because he's not one of US. When really the brother represents everything that's good about US you dipshit motherfucker.

"He has a lovely little image that the Chinese government controlled media has placed in his head."

Again, no, the man has been all over this world. He has some understanding -- like most people who pay attention -- that the Chinese are fucked in a lot of aspects of their current political environment. This does not change the fact that they spent 40 billion dollars to make their capital city a WORLD CAPITAL. If you do not get that simple fact. You are a tired as Republican, and there's no place for your thinking in the 21st century.

Wow, you sure do have to curse a lot to make your point. It's funny, you seem to have a great respect for China, yet a lack of respect for America, which you feel is becoming a police state. I make you a challenge: You have ripped on our government pretty thoroughly. Travel to China, log on and try to rip on their government for Tienanman square and see what happens. If you think our "secret detainee facilities" are bad, let us know how theirs are. Your moral relativism is foolish. Yes, their culture is old and should be respected. I just hope that their vile and corrupt government falls soon so that they may become a great and proud country again. They spent 40 billion in one city to improve it. their economy is 1/6 of ours. If the olympics had been in, say Denver, would you have approved of Bush spending 240 billion to fix it up? I made an earlier post with further comments. Please look at it and tell me what you respect so much about China.

    Obama and our infrastructure

    by arcadiands

Obama was specifically talking about how Bejing was 'green' for the Olympics and how they are a model for how American cities should focus on improving their own environment, and that Americans wonder why the can accomplish that in China and not here.
Meanwhile, all exterior shots of the city were 100% CGI because the smog and pollution was so thick over the Olympics, that all the shots would look like cut action scenes from Backdraft.
China managed to reduce its pollution by sending military troops to every factory and industrial site in the city and barracading the doors shut for the duration of the Olympic Games. And even STILL, you couldn't see 50 feet in any direction because the city is buried under its own cloud of pollutants.
Obama: because the biggest change we need is to change the facts in order to win an election. Oh and yeah, Biden is what - the 3rd longest sitting representative in Washington? That's some crazy kind of change going on with that ticket right there.

Obama: "You may call it slave labor and fascism...but, to me, it's Mao-watering" (cue the flashing "Laugh or Die" sign). Remember his trip to Germany? ("I don't see any concentration camps, do you see any concentration camps? Let's pretend the whole thing never happened. I love you, Germany"). No wonder this tool will lose in November (and I hollered myself hoarse, earlier this year, at a fundraiser. I thought he was cool). I was hoping that Bush--and other world leaders--would have boycotted the Olympics. But I realized the "hope" was quite futile. So now the Chinese dictators are smugly content that they're wielding an untarnished image.

You just pulled that shit on Obama. Here's a lesson: if he didn't SAY THE WORDS YOU SAY HE DID, that means he DOESN'T MEAN WHAT YOU SAY HE MEANS. Got it?

The most amazing thing is the height of arrogance surrounding the london bid. Anyone can tell that the logo is the worst logos ever. despite repeated calls for it to be scrapped at least on medical grounds. its still there. unbelievable. London got the bid by going behind france's back and stabbing them like brutus. New labour hated Chirac for not signing up to the war on Iraq. But chirac saw frontline battle in world War and experienced trench warfare in the battle of algiers. blair never saw conflict. London will put on a great show and they always do. I look forward to seeing them. There is one last reason why i dislike blair. last week. ten years ago, 29 people died in omagh. 200 were injured. Blair came to omagh and promised that the perpertrators would be caught and ten years later no one has. except one and he was exonerated, last year.... sorry about the rant...

I won't hold it against you, but your
    argument doesn't hold water.
What I think Obama said: China is vastly superior to us with regards to infrastructure and we should do the same thing they are doing.
What Obama really said: "Everybody's watching what's going on in Beijing right now the Olympics. Think about the amount of money that China has spent on infrastructure. Their ports, their train systems, their airports are all vastly stuperior to us now, which means if you're a corporation deciding where to do business, you're starting to think, Beijing looks like a pretty good option. Why aren't we doing the same thing?"

There are two ways that we have been looking at this: Obama wants to do things exactly like China and starve his own people and restrict free speech and the media (unlikely), or he's an idiot (my personal choice).
    Take your pick.

Only a moron would think that China is not an emerging economic superpower, so him stating that businesses could look at them and think "Hmmm..." is merely telling exactly what is already happening.

But you said earlier that his comment specifically means that he supporting everything China stood for, when he was just commenting that in certain ways (NOT ALL) they can in certain views have superior something or other than us.

He did not say we should pride ourselves "more on national image than feeding its people/slave labor." He did not say let's do it exactly as they do. Nowhere. Did. He. Say. That.

And I'm surprised at your "calling out" of "bleeding-heart liberals" and how they do not recognize the human rights violations perpetrated by China. OF COURSE WE DO! WE'RE THE ONES PROTESTING! WE'RE THE ONES WHO ARE ALWAYS PROTESTING! Shit! Usually the standard (or standard who posts on certain boards) right-winger will tell us liberals to STOP complaining about human rights violations (you know, like the ones the United States is perpetrating, ALTHOUGH NOT TO THE EXTENT OF CHINA). It sounds to me like you heard one liberal support China, and you thought we all do.

    Wrong, sir. Wrong.

And to assume you know what's in anyone's brains without hearing their direct words is selfish, stupid and shortsighted. Get off your Obama hate-wagon. At least some of us liberals can admit that McCain and Obama BOTH have some good ideas.

Although I personally believe Obama to be a socialist, I don't think he is praising communism with his statement praising the infrastructure of China. He is, however showing how very naive he is. Tell me Lenny, do you believe that fresh air is an important part of infrastructure? I do. China ordered a million cars off the road and closed all factories around Beijing closed to clear the air. Did Obama mention that? No. China pulled the workers out of the Szechaun province from the rebuilding after the massive earthquake that killed 70000 people and left hundreds of thousands destitute, in order to rebuild Beijing. Did Obama mention that? No. So sure the Chinese put together a hell of a show and built a hell of a city. But at what cost? $40 billion from an economy 1/6 the size of ours. Was that money well spent? I think not. And finally Obama compared one very well engineered city to the ENTIRE United States. The only reason corporations want to go there is to avoid Union rules, wage laws, environmental laws, and having to pay health care. In China big business rules, and the individual has no say at all. Obama is a fool. I don't hate him, I just don't want him to lead this country.

You don't understand: the REASON that China's infrastructure in BEIJING, HOME OF THE OLYMPICS, is great, is because they have stopped putting money into other programs in order to display a better image of themselves.

What's a word folks on the left use a lot? Oh right... CAUSATION. If you look at what is caused by putting that big a percentage of your national budget into cleaning up ONE CITY, you'll see that other places are thrown into despair. If Obama wants to be on par with China in terms of their computer generated image, then be prepared for other programs to be cut. Or... taxes to spike.

I'm not saying that Obama wants to do everything like China, I'm just saying that he's a moron who says things before he thinks them through.

I called out "bleeding heart liberals" because they needed to be called out. Nowadays, the whole term is used by the left to describe how the right view the left. I have some very admirable friends who fight for human rights and are the first to criticize the governments involved in the latest atrocity. More power to them! What I'm criticizing is the fact that there would have been more of an outcry after these statements had ANY POLITICIAN ON THE RIGHT said it. I'm not saying that all liberals aren't decrying the human rights violations of China, I'm just saying that a lot of them are looking very hypocritical for not criticizing Obama.

But isn't that how the left operates? Hypocrisy is the way things are run! Do as I say, not as I do...

From 2000 to 2004, one presidential candidate gave 25% of what he earned to charity, whereas the other gave 1% to charity. One presidential candidate adopted a girl from Bangladesh after she came up to him asking for medical help, while the other has a brother who lives in a hut. I'm sure you can tell where I'm going with this...

I'm a basic sports fan who loves my Sunday football and baseball playoff season, but I have to say I never really got into the Olympics all that much since I really don't care who wins a medal for volleyball or some such thing like that. On the other hand if there's going to be some sort of historical event taking place that you can actually tune in to see with some sort of advance notice -- like Phelps winning the all-time number of personal medals -- sure, I'll tune in to see a moment in history taking place. On the other hand, I can believe the ratings since since even a person like me tuned in to watch the opening and closing ceremonies. I figured that for the first ever China Olympics that they'd go all out to put on one helluva dog & pony show and I was right. Those 2 ceremonies were spectacular to say the least. True visual masterpieces. On the other hand, too bad they faked a bunch of it, and too bad our great "free speech" American media (and NBC in particular) took it up the ass and played along until they HAD to acknowledge things. And too bad the Chinese cheated at the games and the Olympic rules committee is too chicken shit to call them on that, too.

His statement was ignorant, and I'm sure it is getting great play in China. I'd be willing to bet the headlines read "Possible next US president admits Chinese superiority". If he had praised Beijing and left it at that, I'd have no problem. He had to compare it to the United States, and dude, there is absolutely nothing the USA needs to emulate from China.

There is absolutely no way that your assessment of the situation resembles my stance on Obama's statements. He SAID that China's infrastructure is vastly stuperior to ours. He wondered why we weren't doing the same thing China was doing. It is not that far a step to criticize his choice of China being a "role model" when it comes to certain things. You seriously don't understand do you?

It's just like one of the TB-ers above who said that Bush was worse because he actually went over to China to watch the Olympics. Do you need to explain that going over and watching the Olympics is NOT the same as supporting China's human rights violations? Because I don't see you doing it!

    by lenny nero

...are both finding things that simply aren't there, because they were not said.

And linguistically, swearing and capitalizing words shouldn't indicate any form of stupidity--or rage, for that matter--as much as it is a concern for emotional impact, conversational quality (which is MY way of writing) and memorability.

Point is, both of you are falling into a kind of logical fallacy, the name of which completely fucking escapes my mind right now.

China is where America does a great deal of business already. This is not a secret, nor is it anything remotely recent. For him to reflect that in a comment does not say that it is ignorant, simply because he didn't go over every point in the statement. If we all talked like that, having to deal with every angle for those looking for cannon fodder, we'd never go home and get to sleep. Just because he didn't say it doesn't mean ANYTHING.

And I have nothing to do with the comment about Bush's presence in China having anything to do with "supporting China's human rights violations," so if you were indeed asking me to discuss that--which is unclear to me considering your last two sentences--I have nothing to say on the matter.

And I still think my cheddar cheese argument makes sense, because it demonstrates the fallacy under which both of you have fallen. Now if I could only remember what the hell it was called.

America is country with over 400 million people. America views the wider world with great suspicion. I think it is about time that americans actually learned a little more about the world. Americans should be taught that their leaders have not always acted in a way that have made americans popular. When I read the papers I am taken a back by sheer and utter idiocy of the irish left. When terrorists go into nightclubs blow themselves up what do you expect is going to happen? or when terrorists blast rockets into another country? Irish left hates isreal, which is why they dont say anything when isreal is attacked but when Isreal respondes, the irish left goes mad. most intelligent people in ireland ask the quesion that I have asked? But as is always the case govts are very selective about history they teach. The irish famine is a good case in point. Very complicated thing that but its alwys been a case of its the brits fault. Ireland once had a population of 8 million. Starvation and immigration where the causes.

...about Congress and the New York Times? And when did I pigeonhole you as a McCain voter? This is sheer lunacy, I tells ya!

Lenny Nero, "This is sheer lunacy"

    by immortal_fish

Yes, you WROTE no direct quote of the NYT. And yet, they are the ones that published (as *YOU* mentioned) how GWBush has a higher approval rating of the Congress and, well, even themselves. Yes, you wrote nothing about them, the NYT directly. And yet, that which you reference, which was referenced by they themselves, was repudiated by their lower approval rating -- OF THEMSELVES.Confused? I am... and I wrote this! But you libs wouldn't have it any other way.BTW -- you never did pigeon hole me as a McCain voter. You simply pigeon holed me as a knee-jerk Republican with, well, just about everything you "said" yet mostly "We'll have to agree to disagree, but you cannot possibly tell me what's in my mind, because you honestly haven't asked and are applying your own ideas of what every American liberal is. Nothing is simply black and white...except for the election!"Now, if you weren't pigeon-holing me as a neocon (not odd on AICN) you certainly were casting me the far-right conservative. And you are wrong.

Anything you wrote about anything I (may have) wrote is in complete and utter error. Sheer lunacy, indeed, I say (on [allegedly] your part, that is)! And, again, where does this get us? Nowhere. When anything one writes to the contrary is inadmissible, then anything written in response to them is admissible. And vice versa.Only pigs can wear blue ribbons on their tails...

I said no such thing, Immortal. Read what I wrote again.
