DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW Falls On DVD (And Blu-Ray)!
Beaks here...
Here's some welcome news courtesy of Deadpit.com's "Kentucky Colonel" and CHUD.com's Alex Rivello: the made-for-TV horror fave DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW is at last headed for DVD and Blu-Ray!
It's been over twenty-five years since I watched DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW, but it's etched indelibly in memory as one of the most frightening films of my childhood. The sight of poor Bubba Ritter (Larry Drake) exacting revenge (via pitchfork!) on the vicious townspeople who wrongly executed him for abusing a young girl ranks right up there with HALLOWEEN and SALEM'S LOT as a champion inducer of nightmares. I don't know how it'll hold up now, but I can't wait to revisit the movie once it resurfaces.
Details are light at the moment, but if Rivello's reporting it, I'm going to trust it's a done deal. Great, great news!

I remember a "Night of the Scarecrow" which was a cheesy low budget affair, but not this. IMDB here I come.
-
Good job!
-
wherein he high-fives himself for the next 3 minutes.
-
this has nothing to do with Batman?
-
I know it isn't, I'm just saying.
-
I just said "No way!" out loud at my desk at work. Preeetty sure the people around know it wasn't work-related. Thanks a lot. But really: Awesome news! I've had the VHS for a few years, can't wait to upgrade!
-
Last year I bought a bootleg DVD of this off ebay that someone made from a VHS. (Original VHS's were going for like $90!) It's very well done. There's no real blood shown in the film, so in one instance, to get around that, they end up making one of my very favorite edits ever which involves cranberry sauce. You have to see it to understand. This film really stuck with me as a kid, and is still very enjoyable. (One could argue that it's dated, but that rarely deters me from enjoying a movie.)
-
They are depending on a certain segment of the population getting confused and thinking it's either 1.)The Dark Knight or 2.) some sort of Ancillary DTV to the Dark Knight. These people will buy it, watch it for a half hour, get frustrated, fast forward through some more, then realize that Batman does not appear in this feature. They will then attempt to return it to Walmart, but Walmart will tell them, "sorry! you opened it! you're screwed now!" and the dvd will end up being the dog's chew toy.
just you wait. -

Will the new revised cover of this DVD photoshop Batman in there
by the winged doucheman
They could add a fuzzy bat photo or man in clown makeup and not get sued.
-
Is that the same studio that did Zombie vs. Vampire? And the cover looked exactly like Freddy vs Jason? Sucked hard ballsack btw. Hide and Creep is the best indy zombie joint FTW.
-
is better, check it out on youtube yeah! It's actually pretty f'in sweet

No reason to let him go... he was great and is Supe's!

There's an urban legend that this short is good. It is not. Anyone who's actually seen it and has a brain that can go faster than 15 mph (or 24.2 kph for the rest of the world) can see that Dead End sucks. I don't know how that urban legend got started...

Why does that guy in that Virgin Territory ad look familiar...
by l. ron bumquist
Oh it's Fucking Anakin Skywalker Jr.
Reboot Superman? Fuck it why not. Legends like that live on there ability to be reinterpreted. No need to get precious about a franchise series. Just get a different artist to re-make it every couple of years, in their own ideal, without too much interefearance. I'm drunk.
-
when????
-
Now can we PLEASE get Rankin & Bass's Bermuda Depths on Blu Ray (we never even got a DVD of it...)
-
All these years---AAAALL THESE LOOOOONG YEAAARS!--my sister and I would say, "Hey, remember that movie Dark Night Of The Scarecrow?" And then bust out into, "Bubba didn't do it!" And no one else on God's green quim knew what the fuck we were talking about. Well here it is: Proof that this movie exists. I just hope it's as scary as I remember it when I was...um...what? Eight?--and not a giant piece of trash.
-
Well, it is.
-
My sisters and I got freaked out by this movie when we were kids. Now I know what I'm getting her for her next birthday, I guess... The hand protruding from under the grain in the silo is one of those images that has stuck with me for a long time. Awesome!
-
It's been forever since I've seen this movie, but I remember really liking it.
-
Satan's Triangle must never be shown again. Abso-fucking-lutely scared the shit out of me as a kid. I think it stunted my growth.

Some movies, good or bad, leave an indelible impression.
by stan grossman
This is one of those movies. I still have night of the scarecrow(its original title) nightmares to this day. Being falsely accused may be the most terrifing thing imaginable. Especially when it involves being surrounded by several moronic imbred southerners with shotguns and blood lust. Get em bubba, get'em. And hey douchebag, Singer's superman is solid like a diamond. Dont have any idea why so many people dislike it, hate it even. Maybe there's just not enough strobediting or crash zooms that this add afflicted generation loves so much. I understand that the lex luther/diabolical scheme was simple jack level retarded, but the rest of the movie, in my opinion, is flawless. Save for bosworth's wooden rendition of lois lane. So have fun with the reboot. Im sure steve johnston's got plenty of free time to direct.Unless he's cooking up a ghost rider sequel(lets pray for that)Or we could get Ratner, I mean he took over for singer on xmen and look how that turned out. Adios singer and as a result adios intelligent, watchable supermans. Somebody find me an torettes ridden editor and an avid machine. theres money to be made.
-
Are you also one of the "turtle dream" people? If you are, then you know what I'm talking about and how weird a phenomenon that movie seemed to have caused.
-
and harry hamlin's face is worthy of a horror movie marathon.
-
Fuck yeah, Beaks! I feel exactly the same way about that movie. I couldn't have put it better myself. It's about time they released it. Awesome news. Finally the younger generation will be able to experience it.
-
You're right! However, Drake went Full Retard in each instance. Therefore he went home empty handed (no Emmy).
Seriously though, I remember watching this late one night as a kid and it freaked me out. 'twill be fun to check out again. -
Just for shits and giggles I looked him up on IMDB right after I wrote that, and sure enough he was TWO Emmys for playing Benny.
-
I want this like RIGHT NOW...
I hope this news is legit. Something telss me the Blu-Ray mention is a tip off this is bogus. -
Such a great TV movie. Not many of those around anymore. Maybe I'll be the murderous scarecrow this Halloween. Too many nerdy Jokers will be on the loose.
-
emerges from the closet and rapes a vacationing man lured into handcuffs on a comely woman's bedpost. Sadly the Scarecrow never appears. False advertising for an otherwise great Batman butt sex movie.
-
I had a friend when we were kids that used to go on and on about this Bubba scarecrow movie, and I always gave him shit about it and told him he was crazy! I better find him and apologize.
And Pazuzu, I had a fucking panic attack swimming in the ocean when I was a kid. The reason? That goddamn turtle popped into my head. -
For years I have been trying to figure out why this movie is so disturbing. I still don't know why. Is it the atmosphere, the story, the normal midwest setting or what? Maybe it's that final shot that I think is one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen. I'm really not sure. Does anyone have any thoughts about this?
-
DOOM had a dark night last night thanks to White Castle and their infernal sliders! DOOM didn't even know stainless steel COULD skidmark!
-
One of us! One of us!
-
Always wondered what it was called. I seen it on TV late one night when I was a kid, and have fond memories of it.
-
Do we have an actual release date yet? BTW, your above links open in the same window.
-
On DVD and no one even talks about it. Jesus Christ. I guess most people don't even know what it is.
-
I think it was the first time that my mom left me and my little brother alone at night, and we find this playing on TV (CBS, no less!). Scared the shit out of us. I also remember the severely edited for network TV Exorcist keeping us up all night too.
-
The grown ups are talking about something that isn't Star Wars or a comic book movie. I'm scared and confused. Mommmmmmmmy!
-
I can't wait to see it again.
-
Oh yeah... for years I had the dreams... caught the end of the movie one night 15 years ago on cable... found an old video of it and ordered a bad dvd of it recently. I still think it is fantastic! It shows how awesome tv movies were when we kids and how much more insane and imaginative (and drugged) the creative minds were back then...
-
I saw the movie on TBS (does anyone else remember when they would show old movies instead of sitcoms from the last few years?). Chilling stuff.
Being buried alive in a grain silo is at the very bottom of the list of ways I want to die thanks to this movie (and WITNESS, but still...). -
the third dude were perfect as redneck morons who got their due.
-
You just awoke a long forgotten childhood movie nightmare! This shit Fucked me up big time!!! must see it again NOW!
-
too bad I didn't log on earlier. When I saw this up I was thinking of using it, but oh well. Truthfully I can't think of a creepier made for tv movie.
-
Oops, I've given the Hollywood remake machine an idea.
-
It's coming!And it's gonna KICK YOUR ASS!!!
-
I saw this when I was home ALONE around the age of 10. I think I had hidden in the laundry room for about 2 hours until the folks got home
-
but I don't actually remember what I liked.
-
because it doesn't rely on effects that could become dated. It has the same creepy backyard vibe that the original Night of the Living Dead had, remember the opening where Johnny and Barbera are driving along those country roads? I lived next door to every one of those houses. I can still see the scene where the mob closes in on the scare crow and those frantic, terror-filled eyes in the mask, trapped and desperate. Now they need to pony up a nice DVD of Race With the Devil and finish off with my favorite Shatner/Griffith film Pray for the Wildcats.
-
It's a made for TV flick. But.....It's still pretty awesome due to atmosphere. This is a worthy title, and it's due it's day. But don't expect any real frights, like as in it'll make you lock the doors. Check this one out, it is a great little flick. It's all about atmosphere, BABY! Then again, I love Carpenter's THE FOG. Did I also mention I have the hiccups?
-
Yeah. I remember really enjoying it too. For some reason I thought Bubba was played by Clint Howard (probably double-featured it with The Ice Cream Man... another low budge classic). Same boat really, can't say weather it lives up to memory or not, but the You Tube clips seem to live up to memory. Always did love a good film where the monster isn't seen (but still creeps out). Got to love that silo death. Very cool, looking forward to re-renting it.
-
You gotta remember it was made all the way back in 2003. Batman Begins was hardly on the horizon. Fan films as a genre were still developing. For what it was and when it was made, it was very cool compared to having no Batman film at all.
-
Is probably the creepiest tvmovie i can remember seeing. You can find it on dvd under a differenttitle. I liked the scarcrow, but check gthis out. There is a moment in the movie that to this day, just thinking about it, just chills me.
-
We've been wanting this little gem of a TV movie to come out on DVD for years.
We were able to track down a UK VHS copy (with that deeply cool artwork) a few years back and it was STILL a great movie. We can't wait to pick it up! -
Either you're the retard IN Dark Night of The Scarecrow OR your sense of humor is just pissweak and desperate
-
The dude is hanging onto a rope inside a barn and gets sucked into a grain harvester? I remember it as a kid.
-
Does any one here remember "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark"? Great 1970's ABC Movie of the week that had the same impact. It gave me nightmares for years. Let's get this one on DVD to scare the hell out of our kids and grandkids!
-
I don't quite get it.
-
That creeped me out, too.
-
"Don't be Afraid of the Dark", the 1973 made for TV movie starring Kim Darby and Jim Hutton that scared (and scarred!) me shitless when I was young! It's about little demon-creatures coming out of an old condamned furnace to terrorize poor little Kim until she goes crazy!... I'd love to see this movie again!!!
-
Didn't see that you had posted exactly the same comment as mine just a couple of hours ago!!!
-
or thought your friends were full of crap need to get this. Now remember, it is a made for tv movie so it was creepy when we were ten or 12. It's probably still creepy now, but not to the same extent, but man I need to see this again. And what's up with one of you guys hiding in the laundry room. That's like the worst place to hide. "Bubba didn't do it." Ah, memories, now let's go play the hiding game.
-
with Parker Stevenson. It's nothing like Amityville. Another creepy made for tv movie though.
-
I don't know who this other Colonel is...but I like the cut of his Jib!
-
Further proof that classic old school geeks movies are just important to this site as new releases with pretty explosions by Michael Bay.
-
When I think of the level of "effects" when I was growing up and the super-hero offerings of my youth it gets hard to see the unimagined wealth of sci-fi,action and fantasy material that this generation is wallowing in and listen to the constant complaining. Hell, even if a movie is a suck burger if it has sabertooth tigers in it then F'in COOL, know what I mean? Many talkbackers these days couldn't sit 5 minutes to watch the movies that mentally scarred me for years with their cheesy/creepy goodness.
-
That's why I also love Quint's AMAD forum. Yeah malificus, I'm all for good effects, but there has to be a story behind it. Things that go boom do not a movie make.
-
know that there is only one Grammaton Cleric. Grammaton Cleric Binks. There's a name stealer in there. Thief Bagginses we hates it.
-
I used to love watching this on Halloween as a child. I bought a copy of it on vhs about 6 years ago. It does actually hold up as a creepy haunting flic!!
-
You Tube. It has serious spoilers, so if you've never seen it you've been warned.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avvHsc0CikI -
I watched this movie ages ago. Gave me some crazy nightmares. Good news. Would love to see it again.
-
Yeah, execution is a bit much. But should the crime go completely unpunished?
-
Holy over-rated Bat Man, that movie is nothing without Heath, and with him it's 1 hour too long with the worst fight scenes ever put to film. What a collosal disappointment.
-
"You gotta remember it was made all the way back in 2003. Batman Begins was hardly on the horizon. Fan films as a genre were still developing. For what it was and when it was made, it was very cool compared to having no Batman film at all."
So you're basically saying, "Yeah, it sucked, but it's all we had." The same could be said about Batman & Robin. Crap is crap. Dead End isn't as eye-rapingly awful as Batman & Robin, but let's not pretend it's good simply because it's all we had. -
It had its moments. Like the spitting and the mouth-wiping, and the 3/4 view where the cape draws inward as he slowly stands to his feet.It was certainly worth the price of admission.
-
Christ how many times did Batman spit before he took a swing in that movie? It's cool to watch. Just as a lava lamp is cool to watch. And for a fan film it's exceptionally well filmed and the visuals have more nods to the comics than any of Nolan's films. But it still seemed like a guy opened up a closet and said "Hey a Batman costume! And an Alien costume! And a Predator costume...."*LIGHT BULB* I know, I know there were Batman v Predator/Batman v Aliens comics. But Dead End had almost nothing to do with them. Again, it's fun to see a classic looking Batman on film, but that's about where the fun ends. And where the fuck did he get those huge Bat-Blades? And why would he need them at all? Landscaping?

The Superman/Batman team-up made by the same people...
by iamjack'suserid
...is worse, if you can believe. The funny thing is that the overgrown face playing Superman actually thought he had a chance at playing the character in Superman Returns.
-
I saw that when I was like 7, and it terrorized me for like a year.
Do I dare watch it again for therapy?
Crap! -
Man, good call to mention this. I too have vague scary recollections of this. I just remember this one pitchfork-stabbing with someone in a scarecrow costume and some shmuck 'drowning' in a giant grain silo. I'm sort of freaking out at work now. Definitely getting this!
-
Surprised it hasn't been remade yet.
-
only seeing the hand above the grain still tapping against the wall with a flashlight like yeah, someone's going to answer. I wouldn't have mentioned the scene, but as it's already been spoiled.....
-
spoiling that scene. It's a no brainer that all these rednecks are going to die somehow.
-
And the creepiest thing about it for me was that I grew up in the country with the landscape dotted with old, creepy barns and silos. I thought the farm just down the road from us was where Bubba lived. Very well done film for made-for-TV.
-
OMG, i loved DNOTS as a child. AND Bermuda Depths. and thanx for remindin me of This House Possessed as those breathing walls still haunt my dreams, lol. BUT, does anybody remember a movie where the women in a family turned into black widow spiders? the shocker ending was this chick walkin out of the ocean in a bikini and she had that red hour glass on her stomach. that's a movie i think i only dreamed as a child, but it scared the shit out of me.
-
I remember seeing this for the first time at the video store back when I was 8 or so - even the cover on the VHS box scared the shit outta me (the scarecrow reaching out at you from the box). Haven't seen it in years but it was creepy as fuck back then - hopefully it still holds up today.
-
I've always remembered how this film pushed the envelope for horror on broadcast TV. You're not really sure who the scarecrow is until the end! The edit with the woodchipper is the best ever! The cutaway shots of the garden gnomes and the final scene with the smashing pumpkins ... "Next we'll play the Chasing Game!"
