SciFi Greenlights STARGATE: UNIVERSE!!

Published at:  Aug 22, 2008 2:02:57 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

A third live-action "Stargate" series, "Stargate: Universe," will launch early next year on the SciFi Channel.

According to James Hibberd's story for The Hollywood Reporter:

“Universe” introduces a team of explorers who find an ancient unmanned ship called the Destiny. Unable to return to Earth, the crew must fend for themselves aboard the ship, which has a preprogrammed mission taking them to the far reaches of the universe.

The channel's description:

After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by The Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed.

What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.

The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the Destiny's original mission.

Challenges will arise though as the ship comes into range of Stargates placed centuries ahead of the Destiny, but only for a brief period of time before carrying on with its pre-programmed navigational schedule. If someone is left behind, there is no way to go back for them, adding to the drama of encountering new races, enemies and adventures.

A two-hour "Universe" movie will hit the channel in the first half of next year, followed by the series proper next summer.

"Stargate: SG-1" ended its regular run on SciFi last summer. The channel announced Thursday that spinoff "Stargate: Atlantis" would air its last regular episode in January.

I don't expect this one to last very long. Trust Sci-Fi to screw up every good property they get their hands on as they try to keep costs down. They've destroyed Farscape, SG1, BSG, and now Atlantis. They try to keep one hot property going just so it'll bring in viewers that they can then inundate with ads for their crappy monster movie of the week. Looks like Eureka will be the only thing worth watching, and it's kind of a take-it-or-leave-it show.

    The main issue I've got

    by tomdolan04

is I've found the two spin off dvd's to SG1 and Atlantis wildly inconsistent and weaker than they should have been. To chuck them in the bin with the studio to say "Right, new setting cheaper new actors same franchise" and move forward when they should be focusing on the shit they're releasing in the here and now, it reeks of chucking the baby out with the bathwater.

I'm all for newly commissioned Sci-fi, but think this is just the Stargate leading to the land of ever diminishing returns. I hope I'm proved nicely wrong.

Man, the most popular sci-fi on television...

    by mymand316

...sure is getting a lot of flack from the geeks on this board (you know you are, as am I). Just because the elitist few who are here don't like it doesn't mean it's not awesome.
Stargate is a better series overall than Star Trek. Sg-1 was just as good as Deep Space Nine and NG and far and away better than Voyager, and Atlantis is better than SG-1. It may have lacked the budget of a bigger sci-fi series, but it had freaking McGuyver as its lead and then Browder and Black playing better roles and seemingly having more fun than they had on Farscape.
You might not like Stargate, but give it the respect it deserves. SG-1 was the longest running American science fiction show for a reason, and it wasn't because of Joe Public. Atlantis is great, and I'm sure Universe will at least be good.

    Some observations

    by adamdiran

Ok first off I would be very suprised if Sci-Fi didn't have some contractual obligation to keep some kind of Stargate on the air given the MMORPG is coming out.

I mean would you invest and spend years developing one and risk the show being off the air when it came out? Theres a reason nobody makes Star Trek games anymore...

As for this incarnation.. its derivitive as hell, but hey thats the Genre. Yeah its sounds like Voyager and yeah it sounds like Sliders, but those shows had good concepts that were just very badly executed.

If the producers get down with their derivitive selves. Take a page from lost... kill people.. leave people behind... Heck if 1/3 the cast from the pilot isn't dead or abandoned by the end of the first season I'll stop watching.

Let them run out of bullets for those MP5's let them run out of medical supplies that their doctor knows how to use. Batteries for those Radios? Force them to make do. make the prop department work overtime with endlessly changing jury-rigged stuff. Make it a running theme.

That should have been the heart of Voyager.

Even Galactica eventually began to gloss over that. Lots of clean clothes and tobacco...

So my expectation is that its going to suck, and suck badly, but it doesn't mean it has to. If they have the guts to stick with the rules of their premise they might actually produce a watchable show.

    Stupid, Stupid, Stupid...

    by rogue planet

If SciFi INSISTS on having a Stargate series, why not stick with the tried-and-true of Atlantis? It's got a proven track record, a good cast, decent writers...why not keep it around? Oh, that's right...it's SciFi, too stupid to keep their good programming around for more than a few years. Always gotta have something NEW, something FRESH, something FLY...something that SUCKS, but is CHEAP!! They should have kept Dresden, and before that kept Farscape and I-Man. Hell, going WAY back, I even liked G vs. E. I was probably the only one, though. Wow, that takes me back a ways. Geez.

While the premise allows them to play with some concepts like "Zomg, what would they do if the Airforce or IOA wasn't there 24/7 to tell them what to do", it also severely limits their ability to tie into the old show. I mean, how could you do a cameo? Gilligan's Island style? "Oh shit, somehow this planet has Rodney and Carter on it! They're trying to rescue us. Oops, they got to go back to Earth and we failed to do so!". Much like Voyager, I'm sure they'll run across familiar stuff, but with a twist or something. A system lord that somehow ended up out there, some pre-genetic modification Asgard, some replicators that are good guys, etc.

    M-O-O-N. That spells rumours...

    by tom cullen

Rumour has it that Amanda Tapping (Sam Carter) and Paul McGillion (Dr Carson Beckett) are already all but signed for the new spinoff, and that there has been strong talks with Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson), David Nykyl (Radek Zalenka) and possibly feelers put out to David Hewlett (Rodney McKay) as well, although the problem with Hewlett is that they still talking about doing regular Atlantis movies, so they don't want to dip too hard into the main Atlantis cast for that reason. The plan is for the show to have a bigger than normal (for Stargate) cast though, more along the lines of a Trek crew, including a strong mix of familiar faces, and yes, they will be picking up a new T'ealc/Ronan/Teyla/Vala type character in their travels as well. Or so I've heard. Personally, while Stargate has never been the best thing ever, it's enjoyable enough popcorn hokum, so I'm sure I'll watch this just like I did the previous two shows. You know, unless this is Voyager levels of horrible...

After ripping on Sci-Fi the other day for appearing not to care about creating new SF series I won't complain about a new SG show.
I could even make a smart ass comment about Stargate: Voyager, but I won't.
I will suggest that the producers and writers for this new show take a look back at Star Trek: Voyager and learn from that shows stumbles when dealing with premise of being lost in the middle of uncharted space. Limited number of crew and equipment, turning your back on all established good and bad guys from your old series, just to name a couple of things.
I won't bash the show yet, you never know, Sci-Fi has been know to mess up and actually put something worth watching out there once in awhile.

    by tom cullen

Apparently the budget for the new show is larger than that of either Atlantis or even the latter seasons of SG-1 (a show that was ultimately cancelled because it was getting too expensive for sci-fi's tastes), in fact the bigger budget demands of the new show is part of the trade to kill off Atlantis. Strange but true. Now of course where the majority of that money ends up, well let's just say I doubt the producers will be crying broke any time soon...

They actually had an instrument panel on the ship that was made from a recycled Boggle game. As cheap as you could possibly imagine, even for the 80's. Only good thing was the anime-esque miniskirted sailor suit uniforms the female crewmembers all wore... paired with 80's style high-heeled disco boots, of course.

    by jtp8000

In ne of Harlan Ellison's books he tells the story of being handed comic books by a TV exec and being told to get develop scripts for a movie. When he explained that it would be plagarism, he was told by TV exec that no, "It's just ideas".

Universe looks like they took everything ever used in a Science Fiction series (especially Trek) and used their "ideas" to mishmosh a TV series.

    Why bother?

    by ray_marden

As previously noted, is this not just "Stargate: Voyager?" And we all know how "great" that series was.

Kill one series today, spin out another one tomorrow - does *anybody* at SciFi see what they are doing? How little respect they have for science fiction?

Even looking at the mediocre Stargate world, they need to take a break from the series and not go back to it until they have a good idea. I enjoyed the first half of "Stargate." It was never great, but it had its moments, had some charm, and did have an interesting premise.

It definitely ween on too long, though, and then Atlantis had no point. Gee, a city in the water? To this day, I don't know what the point of the wraith was. And the new idea is just people in space trying to get home? With the weekly wacky adventure? And let me guess, every week they are about to get home...ohhhhh...until something bad happens at the end? Or they have to do the "right" thing of not going home so they can save the current wacky, weekly planet/universe?

    Booorrrriinnngggg.

I love science fiction, but I'm really starting to hate SciFi.

I'm a Science fiction fan, ok? I enjoyed SG1, a lot. For a show on 10 seasons it the consistency of the quality was pretty amazing, and way above ANY of the Treks. SGA was enjoyable. by jccalhoun

Voyager didn't invent the idea of being lost in space. There had to be at least 1999 space shows with people sliding around uncontrollably from place to place...That being said, it sounds like they are trying to "sex it up" when they include phrases like, "breaking new ground in the relationships between mostly young and desperate explorers" in their press release.

    by greatczarsghost

Done on the cheap more like B5 than Star Trek. When people walk around a space ship and their footsteps sound like they are walking on concrete because it's a TV set kind of breaks the feel of the show. This is just one minor thing of low production values on this series. Bad production values, terrible C level actors, and poorly conceived stories make anything Stargate not on my TeVo to do list

And I keep falling asleep. Really. I'll give it another try, but for all the sound and fury I'm surprised at how bland it is. Shepherd is the only sort of interesting character, and they write him EXACTLY like Jack O'neill. I wish they'd take some chances, write some bigger.

    by gislef_crow

Atlantis was originally supposed to be folks stranded off in another galaxy with no way back, no resource to fall back on, and a whole new series of worlds to explore. The writers/producers can't resist navel-gazing on their own continuity: within a year or two they'll figure a way to gate back to Earth and have every previous actor they can sign on to gate in every 3-4 episodes. Also, what drama? "Oh no, redshirt #2 didn't get back to the ship in time: guess we'll never see him again." It'll make a nice clicking countdown timer a couple of times, but even then we know it's not like the regulars are going to get stranded. Unless an actor is leaving the show for good.

Comic Con and the Canadian wilderness Planets...

    by kaelomont

I seem to remember during the Atlantis Panel at comic con that a fan directly asked the Lady from Sci Fi if Atlantis would still continue if the new Stargate Series was greenlit - she said something about there being enough room for both I think(anyone else remember this?) - it seems to me that in a sense Atlantis hasn't been cancelled, it's just being folded into this new show.

That being said - they could possibly pull it off. I liked what they did with SG1.

Oh, and to all those who complain that planets on Stargate look like backwoods Canada - have you guys ever watched Battlestar Galactica? All planets on BSG look like British Columbia, just like Stargate, because they are all filmed there. Kind of like how location shooting for most US shows looks just like California. TV shows do not generally have much for location budgets - although the last Stargate DVD movie was on location in the Artic circle with a real submarine, but I guess nobody cares about that.

Sounds like this idea has been done before. Hope they can make it work, Atlantis hasn't been very successful and I doesn't seem like the writters know what to do with this show. There's currently no real story arc.

But if this one does work out, how about this. A SG team discovers an Anchient device, and they soon discover it allows one memeber of the team to travel back in time at any given point of his life, within his own body. But the machine malfunctions and the team member, lets call him Beckett keeps jumping from moment to moment in his life, hoping the next leap will be the leap home.

i think they fucked up canceling a show like that when they still got a lot of stories to tell for it and im not sure what stargate universe is but it sure sounds exciting. the worst part is that we wont see shepard or mckay again, i love these characters and how they are portrayed so it sucks not watching them again. the other thing that scares me about SGU is that the producers are making it abit non-stargatish, they want something totally different that appeals to a broader audience, something more like BSG, which is a scary thought. because i want it to stay more like SG_1 and ATLANTIS there is not point changing something that cool.

    by lfhlaw

I was skeptical when SGA came out, but it's grown on me. The last 2 seasons, I think MGM was trying to shake things up. First by bringing Amanda Tapping, and then this year bringing Robert Picardo, trying to rev things up for the show. The problem is that the episodes rehash alot. So the thinking I believe is to have a ship be able to travel through the SG Universe that they've created. Two things that irk me a bit about spaceship shows.
1.Every single planet they're on, the inhabitants speak english. so no new language(though i would say that would be hard? or not? to create a language a la Klingon)
    2. The inhabitants also tend to look very human, being bipedal.
    3. It's rare for them to meet a non-air breathing race.

Also, I believe Amanda Tapping is signed on for Sanctuary, so I can't believe that she would be in both shows.

I would also prefer a whole new cast anyhow, maybe you could throw in a fav actor here or there, but really. I prefer a mix. It would be cool to have one of Thor's people on the ship as an actual participant rather than just 'oh there u are'

If they are literally travelling in the Universe, not the Galaxy it seems like it would be impossible to ever have recurring characters, or an serious enemy. Given how many galaxies there are, the odds of visiting the same one twice should be impossible. I never liked that idea that the Wraith feed on the entire pegasus galaxy. I mean come on, there are trillions of possible planets. They should have come across other civilizations who had never heard of the wraith.

They'll probably still speak english, as it's simply a time-saving consideration due to the constraints of the TV format. Do you really want them wasting 1/2 an episode learning a new language every week? A movie can do that since they can spare the time. Tv has to come up with some kind of "the ancients seeded the language somehow" explaination and just move past details like that so they can focus on the characters, story and action.

    Younger Audiences

    by longshot1010

It's pure irony that behind some of the best television of our time there are studio execs who haven't got a fracking clue what makes a successful show in the eyes of a viewer.

Stargate SG1 had a 200th parody episode where it poked fun at itself and some of the industries tendencies towards sci-fi...and now we got a third Stargate series coming fast and I can't get the "young SG1 clip' from that parody episode out of my head.

They try to explain it away - "It's hip and fresh and will bring a breath of fresh air to the series"...but all I hear is the studio exec doublespeak - "How do we squeeze more money out of this series? We need to market it to younger viewers...that will open the door to new toy lines, cereal box promotions, etc...so we will need a hot young cast of 90210's to fill the show out."

Why must the movie/television industry re-invent every flipping show from past eras with "hip young new casts". My god, it's stuff like the new "The Fog" remake that are ruining the credibility of the industry. Why must every new show come out where we have to believe there is this magical place where adults don't exist? There's 20-something actors everywhere and no one over the age of 25...its pure marketing crap - the belief that the more teen angst and hot bodies we pack into a 42 minute episode the better ratings it will get.

If there is anyone at all connected with Stargate Universe reading my rant just take away this one idea - successful sci-fi is successful because it is intelligent. It takes a step above a regular television episode and does not pander to industry sleaze, sexism, violence and exploitation. It assumes a certain level of intelligence in it's viewer and challenges them with ideas, not images. Go back to the SG1 200th episode parody special...watch all the parody clips very well...and don't use them as a basis for a new show. Be creative, come up with a new idea, and do it the way the fans would want it - not to how it is being dictated to you by a studio who only sees dollar signs on the script.

Please lose the whole "younger audience" angle...younger viewers have a notoriously low attention span. You may just be sacrificing the future of this great series to make a quick buck in your first year and see it fail when you audience moves onto the next "must see" show.

The industry has changed over the last 10 years...it has become a more unstable setting than before and studios are less inclined to keep a series on screen too long and chance ratings going down. The new formula is 1) Create new show, 2) Open said show with big glitzy big bang opening to grab viewers attention (I sympathize Mr Whedon), 3) Dump all your good ideas into the viewers lap to try to keep that "high note" through the first season, 4) Repeat maybe for 1 or 2 seasons, 5) Market the DVD box set for first season or two 6) Once we've made some coin off the DVD sales cancel said show 7) Green-light a newer better show, 8) Rinse and repeat.

The future of television is bleak indeed if the above formula is followed. When you cancel a show at the height of it's popularity, you burn the viewing audience. Burn the audience enough and they stop watching the new shows because they don't want to start giving a damn to only have it yanked out from under them.

My advice. If Stargate Universe isn't going to live up the standards that it's parent series' did...then perhaps it's time to shelf the series. I'm willing to give it a chance though, but if it sucks as much as I think it's going to by what been said so far I will have lost any hope for this industry's future.

    Nuff said. Rant out.

    Longshot1010, i agree

    by dioxholster

bad series are made when creativity is tossed aside and they start looking at the show as a product nothing more. SGU sounds like a 'trendy' product meant to capture mainstream audiences but abandons everything that stargate is about. i will watch it no matter what though but i might be disappointed because stargate series was the only thing on TV that i ever truly cared about because of how different it is and how it didnt cave in to whats trendy at the time. but i can see it now SGU will have a young cast full of blonde models romancing their way through each episode, a couple of sex scenes here and there, and the unexpected death of many characters. they could trivialize the show. lets hope that doesnt happen, but im really scared now. the idea of them canceling a good show in order to replace it with a lesser quality one is a scary thought.

Everyone, I think we can agree on 2 things..

    by axcel1

    1. If there will be a large cast,(a la Star Trek) half of them should be characters from both SG1 and Atlantis. (McKay, Carter, Beckett, Vala, Mitchell) If they do that, I"m sure we could put up with the other half being 90210s. B. They have to use the stargate. What would be the point of calling it "Stargate Universe"? As for making more DTV Stargate movies, both SG1 and Atlantis, those movies could be set before the third series. I rest my case.

    by slkboxrman

as for the comments that atlantis has no plot arcs, u obviously have not been watching...stargate sg1 and atlantis have had the best special effects of any sci-fi show on TV...and if anyone mentions "dr.who cares" ill smack u...u have to be blind and nearsighted to think that there is even a comparison.... im glad that they are letting atlantis go off the air before the ratings do start slipping...sg1 did seem to be milkin the years towards the end..let the show go off the air while its still strong..dvd movies are fine.....universe should be really interesting ...and i concur with the above statements that mckay should be on the show....hes the second best character on the show right behind sheppard

    I liked SG-1

    by kromag

    BUT:

    Farscape > Stargate
    Babylon 5 > Stargate
    DS9 > Stargate
    Firefly > Stargate
Doctor Who > Stargate (though not by much)

If that's 'elitist' so be it, I'm pretty sure the word elite means better anyway...so I'm not sure what's wrong with liking better programming.

Am I elitist for refusing to watch reality TV crap too? Ah shucks.

well, they had to fill their timeslots...

    by lynxpro

With *Doctor Who* pretty much on sabbatical for the next year while they retool for moving to HD and having Steven "The Moff" Moffat produce the show, I guess that left SciFi little choice on what to greenlight. Well, that and *BSG* ending. Speaking of, did anyone notice how many times *Doctor Who* got name-dropped on this week's episode (which involved a time loop) of *Eureka*? How nice of them to do that. Plus, its the second genre show that the actor - who did the name dropping - was connected to a *Doctor Who* reference...the first time being when he was on *Supernatural* as the conspiracy theorist who thought a killer robot was robbing banks.

Thanks for the tip, lynxpro. I've never seen Eureka before, so this time loop episode was a great one to start off with.

    Stargate: Nobody's Watching

The show that just won't die. I think it's always sucked. It's just so boring. And an ancient race just can't figure out to make a weapon shorter and easier to use than a 10 ft. long staff?! Lame.

Retroactive re: Staff Weapons & smaller weapons

    by thesecondquest

They do have shorter and easier to use weapons than the staff, like the ZAT gun and hand-ribbon device. But as far as the staff weapons go, the show addresses that to a degree- there's an episode where SG-1 is helping equip Jaffa rebels who feel P-90's are less effective weapons, so they demonstrate that the staff weapon is meant to be more a weapon of terror and intimidation, but compared to the P-90, it's not as accurate or deadly. The Staff does lend itself better to melee combat, however. Also keep in mind that the Goa'uld rarely ever have to face a technologically advanced foe, so a staff weapon's intimidation factor and accuracy is more than sufficient to enslave more primitive peoples, while giving the Jaffa melee combat options when Goa'uld forces fight anmongst one anopther (likely to the amusement of the respective system lords in charge).

    I'll watch it.

    by _maltheus_

Stargate ain't great, but it's fun. Atlantis had plenty of good episodes and while this new series might be using the Voyager concept, it's not such a bad concept. Most SciFi channel shows are of lower quality (except for Farscape of course, sorry BSG never got there) so I adjust my expectations accordingly and I'll enjoy it for what it is.
They need to pay special attention to casting and that's what prevented Atlantis from getting off the ground. They did good with McKay, but I think that most people can agree that Teyla is one of the worst character in all of fiction. One of the most poorly acted as well. She must have been blowing someone to be (practically) the only one who avoided being kicked off the show. In fact, if she gets carried over, I won't watch the new show (which is stupidly named btw). Vala also turned out to be pretty entertaining on SG1. But the "commander" will be a tough one. They have to stop trying to cheaply clone O'Neil's character and come up with something new already. And although I once really loved Sam, she really bores the shit out of me these days, so move on there.

  • Darkseid always called it a stargate back on the old DC cartoons, and I always thought that was a cooler name than Boom Tube. In fact I thought, as a child, that Stargate sounded like a good name for something, but I had no idea where such a titular gate would lead. If only I knew it would lead to all this blandness!!! I'm sorry, but I'm comfortable with Stargate ending completely as a franchise. Yeah I'd like space shows on Sci-Fi channel, but this franchise is like half a step above Andromeda. That stuff like this gets 19 seasons and Firefly doesn't even get 19 episodes is a gross statement of what's wrong with TV. This new thing sounds like Star Trek: Voyager, and Farscape, and Sliders, and even the first season or two of Atlantis. I'd be disappointed if I didn't already think they were unimaginative.

Atlantis seemed to lose it's way

    by leftfoot

Stargate Atlantis seemed unfocused. What was their mission supposed to be?

At first they were stranded. Then ships could travel back and forth to Earth.
The Wraith were universally united, then split apart. The stuff about Micheal being a Wraith they 'cured' and made human...? Did that mean all Wraiths are former humans or what? -- never addressed.

They actually moved the city to another planet. What happened to the locals on the previous planet? Never addressed.

What was the mission? Find a way back? Did that. Defeat the Wraith? Made a lot of fairly uninteresting progress doing that? Defeat the replicators? Who cares about another recyled storyline?

The stuff with the replicators? Didn't SG1 have an episode that explained they were created by a child as a toy that got way out of hand? What the heck were they doing in another galaxy. Never addressed.

The show to frequently degenerated into likeable characters fumbling with technology. Again and again and .....

Stargate Atlantis R.I.P. You will be missed, but, you're passing is understandable and no real surprise.
