Analyst: By The Next Summer Olympics, Blu-ray Will Be Outselling DVD By A 3-To-2 Margin!!
I am – Hercules!!
Another media analyst is predicting Blu-ray dominance by the next presidential election year, and this one expects a 3-to-2 landslide. From TV Week:
Blu-ray will overtake standard DVDs as the primary form of content software within the next four years, accounting for 61% of the U.S. DVDs sold by 2012, U.K.-based consultant Futuresource says. Such growth will easily outpace that in western Europe, where Blu-ray will account for between 39% and 50% of DVD sales by 2012, according to the report.
Trade group Entertainment Merchants Association made a similar prediction in June. Futuresource analyst Jack Wetherill blames plummeting pricing for Blu-ray players, “likely” to drop to $250 before Christmas.
Of course, some believe all disc formats will be wax-cylinder-esque antiques by 2012, replaced by a “box” that will, in an iTunes-like manner, contain every movie imaginable in HD.

i must admit, im starting to get tempted by the blu light....
-
I would gladly pay to download hi def movies, but I refuse to invest in ridiculously expensive players and discs. I will continue to download HD movies off Pirate Bay and play them on my 360 until that happens.
-
...I have like...a thousand DVD's (literally) and I DO NOT want to start replacing them...ALSO, Blue Ray is fucking ridiculous-crazy expensive compared to a regular DVD.
Fuck "quality," I'm not paying $29.99 for a Blue Ray when I can get a regular DVD for $15.
Perfectly happy with my DVD's. -
I want everything digital and virtual. I'm tired of buying the same things over and over and moving them around for my whole life. plug me in.
-
so the future of home movies is Apple TV? That's fine with me, but if they're doing away with physical media, packaging, shipping and logistics, I would expect movie prices to drop
-
Renting is bull. If I buy something, I own it forever. I would expect to be able to download a high def movie to own for $10-$15. MPAA and copyright mongers are the ones dragging their feet.
-
We will all own unicorns. Mine will hate me.
-
Julius Crary died of pancreatic cancer yesterday. Damn!
-
No way will the average joe re-buy movies yet. New sales may trend to Blu-Ray but not replacements.
-
...is an entirely different service, and no-one seems to recognize that. However the dynamics work out, physical media and newer online services will co-exist for quite a while.
-
Because thats when Final Fantasy 13 will be out, and that'll seal the deal for me. So, yeah, I guess I am on the BluRay bandwagon, but I got over a year in me till PS3 becomes a "Must Buy". Drop another 100 bucks over a year, Sony, YOU CAN DO IT!
-
nobody has to rebuy anything they dont want to. blu-ray players are backward compatible and even upscale. i only have a little over 300 dvds but even though outside of tv shows, i have abandoned dvd, it doesnt mean i have to replace jack. it just means i buy blu-ray from now on and can and do still enjoy those 300 dvds. i guess if you're a big technogeek and HAVE to have the best, then you feel you gotta rebuy everything but thats a personal issue. but i see regular people complaining about the replacing thing and i dont understand why.
-
I keed! Actually, the winner won't be DVD nor Blu Ray--- but as speculated in the article--- the REAL winner would be streaming HD video. I honestly think that Blu Ray will never catch on, it's like SVHS or that Super Audio format from a few years back; everyone is perfectly happy with the currently-dominant medium. Besides, there will be no need to own a movie when you can subscribe to a service which gives you access to practically every movie ever made, in HD yet. There will be the exception of wanting to own a particular movie to view offline, to watch on an iPod or what have you, but the format of choice then would be downloads.
-
Woo Hoo!! Let's bend over and grab our ankles...

Downloads are the future, but I'll miss the "Bonus Features"
by sci_fi_wasabe
Seems like the current trend in digital downloads is similar or lower quality to the hard media versions, yet the pricing is the same or higher than than discs (with DRM). And it's just the movie...no deleted scenes, making of, etc. I'll often buy the DVD of a movie I've seen in the theater and only watch the bonus disc. Blue-Ray will get big once the players are under $100 at Wal-Mart and the discs are under $20 (with the older and "B" level titles under $10.
-
I agree 100% that downloadable content is an overlapping, but seperate market. People with nice home theatre systems are absolutely NOT going to play downloaded low bitrate HD video and lossy audio on their systems when they can buy a disc and get pristine video and lossless HD audio. Until the internet bandwidth exists to readily stream or deliver 40+ GB movies (right now this would take well over 24 hours on an average household connection), then this talk of DLC replacing HDM is silly.
-
Come on guys, notice how all of your non tech-geek friends, who purchased Blu Ray players complain that they can't tell the difference between DVD Blu-Ray? I can't count how many of my friends have told me that. I can tell the difference, but not much really. I have a PS3 Blu Ray player, with a Sony XBR HDTV. And the PS3 up-converts the quality of regular DVD's close to Blu Ray qaulity IMO. What pisses me off is every time I walk into Best Buy, their HDTV displays look much better then mine. And I bought a state of the art player and TV. Sigh.
-
i also wanted to say that its feasible that blu-ray will top dvd in 4yrs, i mean the format's already 2 or 3yrs old and it may not be selling as much as they want, but there's no avoiding their presence in stores and advertising. this isnt like laserdisc where you had to be lucky to even find a store that has them. i cant go into any store without some blu-ray section on display, no matter how small.
-
Just like HD-DVD. If both are available casual sales will go to DVD because new tech is still scary.
The BlueRay players feed off old peoples medicine too. -
Blu-ray is the shit and true the prices are high....but so were DVDs when they were introduced and Blu-ray prices aren't bad if you hunt around, amazon.com had a 50% off sale on a shit-load of blu-rays at one point. I own alot of DVDs as well, and there are only a certain few i would re-buy (starship troopers is totally worth the re-buy). i can live with upscaling most of my DVDs but some movies just deserve to be watched in that prestine 1080p picture that "upscaled" CANNOT touch.
-
Analyst: By next summer Olympics, stupid people will outnumber smart people by a 3 to 2 margin. Anyone who invests that much money in a TV and pays more for a player and discs for only a slight increase in image quality is a sucker.
-
i see many people saying how expensive blu-ray movies are. most of these people seem to be in america and being canadian, if what i pay through amazon is considered expensive then bring those prices on to canada. 20-25$ is MUCH better than 34.99$.
-
In 4 years Blu-ray movies will go for 15 a pop, players will be backward compatable, and Crimean's unicorn will still hate him.
-
Best Buy has an Insignia brand blu-ray player they sell for $269.99, but when I bought they were giving you a free $100 gift card with purchase so the player ended up costing me $169.99 and I got $100 worth of blu-ray movies. I have a huge DVD collection and the only movies I intend on replacing with blu are the great one's. I bought Close Encounters, There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men and Mad Men Season 1 on blu, but I have little to no desire to run out and get Knocked Up or Superbad on blu. The way I feel is if it's a classic movie or a new movie like Iron Man or Dark Knight that I loved, I'll go blu. Otherwise, I love watching upscaled DVD through my HD DVD player and my blu-ray. It looks good enough for me on my 55'' plasma and there is no way they are getting me to sell my existing DVD''s. Like I really need Breakfast Club in HD? I don't think so. Give me Lord of the Rings on blu though, and I'm sold.

isn't Blu Ray doing like 1/20th the business....
by dannyglovers_dickblood
...of Standard Def? Fuck this. This is pure market tactics. I guarantee Sony paid for this fucking analysis.
This is just them trying to push consumers into thinking this is the way to go. Its that whole, "Everyone else is buying one....you should too," mass consumerism bullshit. Well FUCK YOU!!
Its fucking brainwashing....just like oil prices and supply and demand bullshit. They tell you what to believe. Normal consumers don't give a fuck about High Def.....this is like the luxury theater bullshit. Another fucking gimmick. -
once you buy one and watch your old DVD's on them then you realize why you NEED Blu Ray! Sure upscaling makes them look acceptable to a point but NOTHING beats a dgitially sourced high definition movie on a HiDef TV. I've no intention of replacing every film in my collection for Blu Ray, BUT i'll damn straight gonna buy every Blu Ray version of the visual based films like Lord of the Rings, Matrix etc because standard DVD's being upscaled simply don't cut. Blu Ray prices will come down just as DVD prices came down, i've managed to buy all my Blu Ray discs for under £10 on ebaY! Downloads are nice but hard discs are perishable, way more perishable than having a solid state media. When those people who've amassed a huge collection of movies on a hard disc loose all that data through some inevitable accident or drive failure, then they'll realize why it will never beat having the film on an individual solid state. I don't give a shit about Sony or Playstation's etc, but Blu ray is one hell of a format!
-
Oh did I say Funny? I meant Tragically funny shit.
-
Four years from now, we could easily be using some new, vastly superior platform that puts Blu-Ray down for good, and that new platform will outsell DVDs 10 to 1 and Betamax by everything to zero.
-
It seems like including a digital copy with the bluray and dvd version of movie is becoming more and more common. If this continues, won't that hurt the viability of download for purchase?
-
Transfers of older films are the only ones that occasionally supply a "slight" difference, but even some older films offer a vastly superior difference (watch The Road Warrior....the detail is staggering, youd think they filmed it yesterday its so sharp). But newer films, NO COMPARISON....watch Starship Troopers....youll notice things you didn't before with its high level of clarity (in ST....the two guys that get incinerated by the "tanker" bug....never noticed it, but one of the guys eyeballs pops out).
-
If it was $269 and you got a $100 gift card...that doesn't really mean you paid $169 for it. That means you paid $269 and got $100 of blu rays you may or may not have purchased....
-
...try to convince others that its a good idea to switch? Fuck you. I can give a shit how good it makes old movies look...I'm not fucking buying one. The only way I would buy a Blu Ray player is if you can personally assure me that the player will massage my balls and tongue fuck my ass everytime I insert a Paul Verhoeven film. Thats the only way!
-
though since even with blu-ray movies, the digital copies are always SD, then say downloads becomes huge and the norm, they will still have the HD image advantage. but yeah, digital copies are beyond retarded and the sooner they go the better. i mean i just dont seee someone going "hey dude, wanna watch LOTR on my Ipod?" "fuck yeah..2 inch wide Frodo, thats the shiznit yo"
-
won't be much more expensive than DVD players if they are at all. I bet within 3-4 years DVD players will be gone all together replaced by inexpensive Blu-Ray Players.
When that happens, Blu-Ray discs will come down and start to catch up and outsell DVDs. People won't replace their whole catalog, but probably certain titles. All new releases will have more Blu-Ray purchases percentage wise.
Analysts may be a little agressive with their prediction, but I think it is possible. Remember a lot of people on this site were guaranteeing that Blu-Ray would be dead by now and HD DVD would win the format war. How did that work out? -
well im not necessarily convincing anyone to switch....i could give two cream filled shits about whether or not people embrace blu-ray or not....but when some dude says the difference is only "slight" when its a CLEARLY superior hi-def format is just stupid, silly, and utterly re-fucking-diculous....as in, quit being hard-headed or get your fucking eyes checked....OR just shut the fuck up.
-
Some of these movies look fucking fantastic. I only recently got an HDTV (finally I can play my games in High Def) and the movies in 1080p look fucking nice. I can't wait for The Godfather and the inevitable LOTR BluRay set.

I've worked in some aspect of the home video biz for almost 20 y
by the reluctant austinite
--and I'm hardcore film fan. I still own a pretty ridiculous collection of laserdiscs. So I figured I'd drop my two cents. My best friends are early adopters and are already diehard Blu-ray buyers. My experience in the video business, however, convinces me that Blu-ray is only a gateway format (somewhat like laserdiscs, which were actually around for about 20 years) to the "coming thing." I don't think Blu-ray has four years to develop an mass audience because download HD technology and hard-drive entertainment boxes will be well on their way to perfection by then. We'll all have government mandated HD, widescreen TVs by then, and Harry Bolzonnia is right, the average joe Wal Mart consumer just doesn't see as big a difference between standard DVD and HD DVD as they clearly saw between VHS and DVD. As a film fan, DVD corrected most of the problems most of us had with VHS that made us laserdisc buyers. We could get films in their proper aspect ratio (anamorphic encoding eventually) and we could get director's commentaries and extras that real film fans enjoy. Blu-ray isn't doing anything revolutionary with its technology; it just looks a little better. Well, over the years, every time the same damn movie gets a new transfer it always looks better, so you could easily buy your favorite film again every 4 or 5 years. You'll watch it once and then trade it to buy the new, better transfer in 5 years. Within 4 to 5 years Criswell predicts the shuttering of almost all brick & mortor rental stores (Blockbuster will switch to all mail and downloads), and the physical medium will become extinct shortly after. You'll be able to mail order or print your own artwork for your burned discs if you like, but I don't think buying packaged discs of any kind is long for this world. So if Blu-ray needs 4 years to become king of the hill. I'll be surprised if it has time to climb up there.
-
Right on dude! -"The Reluctant Austinite" - the first half of your analysis is correct. However, I think that you are underestimating how much people like "owning" the physical disc, as well as the versitility of playing the disc on different TV's/laptops/hand-held players.
-
Dude the difference is really not that huge we are talking like 20% picture improvement. It is not that big of a deal its not like the difference VHS was to DVD. Granted it is better, but its not better for the amount of money you have to spend.
-
DL-able content and discs will co-exist for some time. to think that everything will become 100% download soon is monumentally stupid considering downloads are mainstream enough to the average consumer yet....its getting there, but there is still a long way to go.
-
my friends are always downloading the latest Blu-ray upgrades to make their new discs look good. Some look like shit unless you have the latest software upgrades. You will NEVER convince me that joe schmoe average consumer will put up with having to download regular upgrades.
-
Consumers want to be able to look at a physical, tangible object on their shelf. I'm not gonna pay money for a movie file sitting on my fucking hard drive unless its a movie with three chicks getting rammed in the ass while metal music blasts.
I like to look at my collection, and admire it. Hard drives are for porn. Regular movies will always stay on the shelf. -
Once we get download times under forever and a nationwide network that can handle all the traffic without without any additional noise creeping into the transfer I'll be happy too do it. With cable companies are throttling down the quality of HDTV television channels and trying to sneak in bitrate caps I don't see it happening any time in the next 10 years, let alone 4. That doesn't count the union issues that will arise when the producers try to pull some "we're making less money online this way" bullshit. MAYBE we'll get there in the next 15-25 years, but that's a long way off.
-
the only stuff that can be downloaded is related to the extras, stuff like PiP etc.. you never have and never will need to download anything for the movie itself. whats on the disc is the best presentation at that point and any blu-ray player is already set to show it off.
-
Let's see how much you love blu-ray when you can't even play the final version of the discs on your players. How's that for a big FU to your supporters?
-
I can't believe the amount of fucktards who WANT downloads to be the next standard. Are you fucking dumb? It's Hollywood's wet dream!! You pay for something that is just thin air, no effort on their part - no packaging costs, disc pressing. Oh, and you can't take it anywhere to show anyone else coz they'll DRM you to death. Downloads are for fucking retards, End of.
-
It amazes me that people think you will be storing the films you buy on your own HD. you won't, you will buy a box that will connect to huge server farm. in these servers will be databases full of films. You will buy the movies you want and create a library it will keep track of what you have paid for, giving you access to the content at anytime. When you want to watch you will stream the film from the Server to your box. So this no space or people running out of space issue will be mute. This is the future get use to it.
-
i know this site pimps them out big time but there's no denying the great blu-ray movie prices they have. the average i've paid with them is 25$ and usually its been lower.
-
Yeah, I love movies. Love 'em. BUt this is ridiculous. Look at the fucking fashion industry - it has many idiots in world convinced that every piece of clothing you buy is somehow obsolete in three months. That is bullshit, and so is "Blue Ray" "HD" and huge 50+ INCH TVs with surround sound ridiculous features stupid idiots just HAVE to have. "But - but, look at the picture! It's sooooeeewwww clear!" So what? The only reason you care is because you think your supposed to care. . . Imagine if people looked at books the way we're thinking about HD. . . Slaughterhouse Five was agood book before, but you haven't read it until you've experienced the clearest typset and most beautifully rendered black on white inking process imaginable. This is HD Book Ray printing technology at work . . .

yeah anyone in support of downloading is a fucking cunt...
by dannyglovers_dickblood
I don't think you realize what this would mean. It would probably be exclusive to that particular machine you download it on....no taking movies to a friends, no copying movies, no trading in old used dvd's, no buying used dvd's.....what the fuck? Are you fucking stupid?
-
someone mentioned a whole "farm" where you get your movies from. well what if they get hit with something and lose all their date, then it isnt just you but a whole country that gets fucked.
-
Let's be serious. Digital downloads will not be "the norm" for another 10 years minimum. The bandwidth isn't there, things like Apple iTV and the NetFlix box are even more fringe than Blu-Ray, and what are you going to do when you want to watch a copy at your girlfriend's house? Pick up your hard drive? Because the corporations do not want you easily churning out digital copies on your USB drive or disc that can play on any player. There will be some sort of pain-in the ass protection that makes you have to remember yet another password or pay a fucking fee. For the $15-30 they will continue to charge, what do you really want? Stop complaining about your storage space and buy a DVD wallet. I defy anyone to tell me why I would rather have a bunch of movies stored on a hard drive that can corrupt and take out $5000 worth of movies--not to mention a probable monthly fee to keep them unlocked--than having the fucking hard copy disc in my hand that plays on all compatible units, and the only danger to it is my own stupidity. Discs will exist, Blu-Ray or not, until there is a good enough reason for them not to. The current state of digital downloads is not enough reason. And if you say that you "protest" by bootlegging Torrents in the interim, quit being a fucking liar. You're not protesting--if you're stealing it now, you'll steal it later. (I've done it too, but I'm not a hypocrite about it.)
-
I get what your saying but man. Downloading will happen. Studio will maximize profit and users will like the convenience. Its like I-tunes I said i would never stop buying CD's and records and i would never by music from I-tunes. But now thats all i buy when i buy albums. It's just so much easier . I can wake up in the morning when buy a new album sink it to my iphone without having to go to the store or anything. It so easy. I can't help but do it. Movies will be the sameway.
-
if you walk into Best Buy and pay $34.99 for a Blu-ray movie then you are dumber than a sack of left handed hammers with "how to use" labels on each of em, and your even dumber if you bitch about the price later....LOOK AROUND, ive seen websites sell newer blu-rays for $15 to $20 (sales are frequent actually).
-
good call Harry
-
...and that's all I have to say about that !
-
dude you will not store movies on your BOX. If you want to take a movie to your girlfriends. you will grab a box the size of a Ipod. It will store your logon info to the network. You hook that up at your girls and not only do you have access to the movie you want but all the movies you own. They will be on a server somewhere that the studio will maintain you will never have to worry about losing anything. The box will just give you access to your list of film you have access to. Then you will stream it high speed from the server to you. That is the download future. It's 10 years out at the most. But its very bad ass.
-
that CDs are still around after 20+ years. Yep, even with your magical downloads available you friggin cocksuckers!! Discs. Rule. You. All.
-
See the fucking films the way they're meant to be seen. Sticky carpets, barely warm popcorn and all.
-
Say that now but in 10 years cd's will be gone. Record companies are selling more downloads then anything. It's going to happen. Dude i love Disks as much as the next guy. But wake up the future will be digital.
-
And everybody will buy this instead, because this time it's really worth to replace your DVDs!
-
Although movies are slowly becoming as disposable as music (as generations become more and more cynical and lazy) there's a big difference. Unless you're an audiophile, a 128kbs MP3 (the equivalent of a home VHS recording off of network TV) is just fine, even compared to lossless audio (equivalent of Blu-Ray.) The difference between a blurry picture and a Hi-Def picture is more apparent and crucial to the experience. It's a five-minute snack for the ears, ported to the iPod and taken to the gym, the grocery store, ripped into the XBox to play during GTAIV, or simply background music to dance/get drunk/try to get laid. A movie, by contrast is two hours of your life and often a bonding experience with a date or family. If it's something particularly dear, you will re-live those two hours again and again. It's more of an investment than, say, the shitty new 50 Cent album. One of the other, underrated reasons for the quick transition to music downloads (other than the main one, which is people abuse the shit out of knowing how to get it for free) was the death of album cover art. Once the industry went to tiny cassettes and CD's, the physical connection to a beautifully done album cover was lost, and 25 years after the LP officialy died as a leading format NO ONE UNDER THE AGE OF 30 GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THE ALBUM COVER. That's a fact. As fancy-pants as some recent CD covers have been, they ain't shit compared to the covers of old, stuff that would go just as well framed on a wall as it would sandwiched between your bookshelves. LP covers could be true reproductions of art. CD covers are just wrappers, and that's how they're treated now. As disposable as a dixie cup.

Your right movies are a experience to share... but you can have that same experience if its download or not.
-
By 2012 we'll be walking around wearing sunglasses that are mini-movie projectors. Also, there will be Jet Cars.
-
Anybody who thinks downloading movies will be the norm in 10 yrs must not have boomer parents. They are a huge market and what they understand is physical media. My dad just turned 60 and will watch movies til he dies. I bet my left nut he never downloads or streams one though. Just trying to provide a different perspective.
-
I suppose I'll eventually have replaced my DVD players with Blu Ray, when they've completely replaced DVD, but I'm not planning on it anytime soon. One big issue is that I've got multiple DVD players, so if I picked up a Blu-Ray movie, then until I've replaced the lot I'm not going to be able to watch it on the bedroom player or on on my laptop. Or lend it to anyone, because *nobody* I know has Blu-Ray. Not one. And currently I can rip DVDs and watch them while travelling. ALIENS (which I think I bought three times already) on earphones as a 1GB MP4 nicely filled a train journey last month. Not going to be able to do that with Blu-Ray for a while. So, no hurry whatsoever. And I've always early adopted all this stuff.
-
Thats awesome good for you man. But you think the music and film companies give a shit out the couple people that won't download in the future. They will stop making physical media all together its to expensive for them. When they can put it out there for someone to download. they take out the middle men. There not going to care about you at all. your going to be in the 5 - 10% of potential buyer. not enough for them to care about.
-

there is a big difference between movies and music....
by dannyglovers_dickblood
Everyone I know has a fucked up stack of burned shit quality cd's.....yet they treat their dvd's like gold. And not film geeks....normal people.
-
Dos your dad have a cable box or direct tv? Then he will be able to use downloading. It will be set up just like that. Where not talking about going to the computer and downloading files anymore. It will Be direct access, and it will be FAST!
-
I just don't see it happening. Not with ticket sales for the theater plummeting like they are. People want to own their own films and watch them at home....I just dont see digital files taking over in the next 20 years. It will exist sure....but I don't think it will be the norm.
-
If I had 50 to 100 movies in 1080p on a hard drive that failed, and my "generous" subscription service allowed me to download them again for free, that's fine. But unless I had the kind of connection speed they have at Microsoft HQ, the nice and simple downloads would take days, possibly weeks. The bandwidth just isn't there yet, and it's waiting for a shift in Internet access. Guess what's going to happen when the world shifts to the next level of high-speed...a lot of people will say goodbye to flat monthly fees. They'll be nickeled and dimed for each MB of data (some companies are already doing this.) Considering a 1080p movie with lossless audio can run 20GB or higher, doesn't that sound MARVELOUS?
-
I dont understand people like you who try to pitch this....why? What are you so gung ho about?
-
I think your underestimating it's power. Look at best buy, they just shrank there music section. because they where not selling it. everyone is downloading more from itunes then buying from them. so they only carry what will sell. Downloading in a very powerful way to get your product out there.
-
Like they've done on the UK release of Terminator:The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I bought it last week, and guess what? The dvd has no fucking extras, despite the bluray version having plenty of commentarys and behind the scenes stuff. Bastards.
-
.....Telling our Grandkids about this crazy way we use to watch things called "Physical Media" and they will all start laughing to the sound of "lololololololololol"
-
Whatever the movie/music companies would love our future to be. I will never buy a download album or movie as long as discs are around. It would take them literally to not be there at all anymore for me to do anything else. There's lots of sensible people out there who think the same way. People who like to get something for their hard earned money.

"Downloading in a very powerful way to get your product out there." This is not the way normal people talk....what the fuck? Fuck downloading!! I like to be able to touch what I buy!! Again...the only thing I will ever download is porn and illegal songs for free!! That is all!!
-
hold on to your DVD players, VHS players and Cassette Players so you can go on "Antiques Roadshow" in 2050 and make a pretty penny, not that we will be using physical money by then either and when you use that expression people are going to look at you strangely.
-
And has artifacting (jagged edges and pixellated colors in the background, like you see all the time on bootlegs.) That's essentially an upgraded SD signal. "The future" is pristine 1080p. Wake me when they do that.
-
Dude my collection is huge at home. it takes up a whole room. i am all about collecting. But im running out of room in there But i also work in technology. and i know Data is endless as long as you have the HD space.
I have huge shelves and I like everything alphabetized. But when you have over 2000 movies it becomes a pain in the ass to move shit around and keep them that way. Digital its all done for me. I can sort and look at my stuff anyway i want. It's just easier and less mess. So you can see why i like it. But i like the other way too. It just makes more sense for things to go the easier route. -
HAHAHAHA love it!

CDs for me are if anything just one delivery system for music. Once it's ripped it goes in a cupboard and never gets used again. I'd rather have a few terabytes of movies in a box under the TV than a whole wall of them, so reasonably priced downloaded movies are very attractive. Don't really mind if it takes a day to download either. Or I can buy the disc, rip that to a hard drive and keep the disc as a backup. Either way, the physical media movies comes on seems increasingly irrelevant. I want to buy a movie, not an object.
-
I'm staying the hell away. They're way too expensive right now.
-
No am not Microsoft stooge. I am just realistic. As Dylan Once sang. "The times are changing."
-
Because you obviously make a lot more money than me-- seeing as you can afford 2,000 films. I have always been against technological trends forcing their product down the consumers throat while convincing them they NEED this. I guess there are plenty out there falling for the tricks....
-
But I AM taking the general Transformers-loving public here. If they hear enough times that "without HD, you're getting a shitty movie experience," they WILL start to believe it. Why do people keep buying iPods when there are less exensive and equal-if-not-better MP3 players out there? Because they think they're supposed to. Why do even non-technophiles piss themselves for the HIGHLY overrated iPhone when it doesn't even have a hard keyboard for texting? (THE NON-PHONE FEATURE EVERYONE USES THE MOST!) Why, why, why? Because "they" told us to. Sony is an awful big "they."
-
...When I can pick up a blu-ray player for under a hundred australian thats also multi-region, then I will. Maybe. Or maybe not. Probably if thats the only format the movies come out on and the video stores and retailers are predominantly blu ray. Of course, I'd rather have downloadable content, or some sort of service like that, but I don't think the companies will be too fond of that. More money in just continually inventing more unnecessary formats and forcing the customers to upgrade all the fucking time.
-
Dude i probably don't make more money then you do have been buying dvds for over 10 years now. I am a tech Junkie I can't help it.
-
to pay $30 for a movie that isn't a special edition. These studios can suck me blue if they think they can lazily release these blu ray discs without extra features and charge $30-$35 bucks for them. I am willing to buy the same movies I have bought several times on standard DVD but there had better be extra footage of Jessica Alba actually naked in Sin City (and riding a mechanical bull) for me to shell out the big bucks...
-
Seriously.
Check "The Googles™"
To think that, even in 5 years time you'll be able to stream a 1080p quality HD movie to your home is ludicrous.
Will it happen? Maybe, but my kids will be grown, married with kids of their own before it becomes viable. All you downloading prophets don't seem to realize that for this to work 99% of the population MUST HAVE ACCESS TO BANDWIDTH. Hell, right now broadband penetration is still not even close AND even those who do have it don't have access to the really high speeds that downloading a 1080p movie would require.
Geez, the lengths some people will go in their delusion because they hate Sony.
Twats.

Who says they will use the internet. Direct TV can do High Def with no problems. Why can't you use something other then the Net.
-
replacing your DVDs unless they are true classics. My PS3 upscales pretty good on my 57" Hitachi. Just get the stuff you really want on Blu-ray and pick up the rest on DVD. As for pricing, where was DVD pricing at this time period in its life? Comparable to Blu-ray player pricing right now. Stop bitching, affordability for Joe SixPack of BR players and media is around the corner.
MT -
So the SD DVD is going to be obsalescent? Good news for people who hold onto their SD players, since the prices on those disks will probably fall.
Me, I've been encouraging all my friends to pick up DivX-compliant players, just 'cause, they play higher capacity disks and are less likely to go out of fashion. -
It's the year 2020, and I've just installed a Microsoft MovieSpaz under my 200'' Panasonic OLED TV. It's this ingenius little box which allows you to download all kinds of movies in 4k resolution! It's amazing, everyone has one!! In fact, every HAS to have one, because the movie studios don't give you a choice. It's the only way movies are distributed these days. It's cool though coz it's real conveniant. Whenever I want to watch a movie, I just scroll through a huge list of em - pay $9 via my credit card for a single viewer licence, or $15 for a multi-user licence which allows me to share the file with friends by sending them a link to my MovieSpaz from there MovieSpaz which expires over 10 days. It's really really conveniant. After I've selected my movie, it'll be ready to play in about 2 hours. Rather handily, they've removed all that stupid extra content and made it a separate purchase! Much better. When I think back to the days of having stupid discs, and a movie collection of my own I just wanna puke. How stupid!! Now, all of my shelves are wonderfully empty - no music, no movies, no books. Empty. I'm tellin ya, the future is fucking great!!
-
As much as I love the picture on my Blu-Ray player, amen to that, brotha. The Justice League animated collection just came out on Blu-Ray. Hmmm, no, I can't justify that one. But Iron Man? Okay, yeah, that's a BR purchase. I will only re-buy the absolute classics, like Godfather and SW. Although I am VERY happy with myself for never buying Kill Bill on standard DVD (though I was waiting for the Whole Bloody Affair, not Blu-Ray.)
-
read the title and think, there isn't going to be an olympics next summer?

those were the days when your parents bought the shitty old beta max in 1983 and could only rent frm the beta section at Errols Video, which had half of what the VHS section had, and you cried as a kid cuz you couldn't watch a movie cuz you were too poor to buy the new VHS players... =0p

Why? Because guys like me enjoy buying something in a box.
I've got a Gamersgate and a steam account on my PC, but I still buy my games boxed from play.
I got an xbox and a PS3 but I'd still buy my old Xbox and PS1 games from a 2nd hand shop and get a boxed copy.
Tactile products are always better. Maybe in 10 years time when I can say, hey Dave, lets watch a movie, then flick through a menu and get Instant immediate 1080p full dolby 7 point with no hitches or snags, then it'll work, but that won't be reality for the common man for a decade.
p.s. I'm still buying HD DVDs for practically nothing, fuck Blu-RAy -
Until BD players drop to $100 and discs are $13 each...it's still gonna be a niche market.
-
Iron Man statues and Batman toys? Hey, wait until you find out what sex is!! It's even better than a download (providing you do it right)!!
-
I'm not saying it won't happen. It's just going to take a little longer than people think. Like when the current crop of 10-14 year old little bastards who have no sense or sentimentality start running the world. Yeah, I can see those little shits who think they're entitled to download everything for free yet still bitch about the quality of the music or movie they ripped from the net like they should have a say in it. I can't WAIT to see what movies are like in another 10 years. (sarcasm) Honestly, "ASS--The Movie" isn't sounding so far-fetched.

Oh you got me! the lonely dorky virgin. Wow maybe i should be like you and tell everyone what a ladies man i am buy spelling it out in my screen name, very clever sir. Bravo!

It's actually a movie reference, but seeing as the movie in question was released before 1995 (when you were born I guess), you would not have heard of it. And no, you can't download it. FAIL.

"Ownership is dying and I don't give a shit, you can't take it with you, afterall." My ass. People are greedy, covetous, selfish hoarding pricks and they're only getting worse. Everyone wants to own a house even if they can't afford it (look what happens.) Everyone wants the nicest car even if it doesn't fit their lifestyle (soccer moms in H2s.) Everyone has to have their own child even though we're overpopulated and there are tons of needy orphans and foster kids (not to mention a lot of these parents are stupid old bags on fertility drugs who will be trying to keep up with 10-year-olds when they're in their 50s. And they never stop at one or two.) People buy more toys for their kids and for themselves than possibly any time in recorded history. PEOPLE LOVE STUFF. And God forbid you try to take it away from them.

It's amazing, everyone has one!! In fact, every HAS to have one, because the movie studios don't give you a choice. It's the only way movies are distributed these days. Which sucks, cause I live in some rural area in North Dakota and our area only became broadband-ready 10 years ago. Anyway, whenever I want to watch a movie, I just scroll through a huge list of em - pay $9 via my credit card to own it 3$ to rent for 10 days. After I've selected my movie, it'll be ready to play Instantly because it streams. Of course, it only plays for 10 seconds at a pop, because my Internet connection just isn't fast enough.
My cousin lives in Minnesota and he has super-broadcast, so he can download the movies fast enough. He loves it, except for the time he had a girl over for a date andf the Internet went down. Instead of watching a movie that leads to something else, they played Monopoly. Been cursing out his player ever since. I'm tellin ya, the future sucks!! -
When in about 12 years time the whole circus starts again with a doubling or quadrupling of the current resolutions ? ;-)
BTW does the PS3 have built in upscaling for SD DVD ? -
i want my case & my extras, i want to own the movie, I want the portability that DVD offers- who watches a film on an I-pod anyway? let alone worry that a computer crash will wipe out their film library...as for BluRay- maybe I'll EVENTUALLY switch- when i can get a player for less than $100 and disks for under 20....till then? my DVD are fine..Why should i switch formats? I still got a working LaserDisk player, VCR and DVD all with Significant libraries, why do i need a new toy?

If you happen to be in the ballpark it strengthens the illusion that you actually know what the fuck you're talking about, and if you're wrong you chalk it up to "unforeseen market fluctuations" or some other corporate doublespeak. Where in the fuck do I sign up for this job built on pure speculation? Do they offer a degree at DeVry?

In what reality would you be able to pay a flat, one-time for the right to repeatedly stream your movie from a server? It would be subscription-based folks! Something like $10 a month for up to 5 movies, $25 for up to 20, and $50 a month for the privilege of purchasing 60 months and repeatedly using bandwidth to watch your movie.
-
Yeah, that may just seal the deal for me now. :-)

Fine, stick with DVD. No, seriously, stick with DVD. No one is telling you or forcing you to buy Blu-Ray. It's cool. Choice is cool. It's downloads that are anti-choice.

...and not to shill for Sony, but as far as upconverting SD DVD's, the PS3 is better at it than even the new cheaper standalone players coming out now according to a number of credible review sites. I just wish they would hurry up with a 5 disc blu player already.

You might as well accept BD as being the next standard, because its in noone's interest for it not to be. TV manufacturers are fully invested in pushing the current HDMI standards (720p, 1080p), so its monumentally unlikely that anything higher res is going to be needed for quite a few years. BD is the *chosen* format to match those TV specs, and once again now everyone has invested in retooling their manufacturing/mastering facilities for BD, nobody is going to be in a rush to pour yet more $$$ into doing it again for the forseeable future because its economic suicide. The ball is in play already, and the only real alternative is fully digital distribution. If you like actually owning a physical copy of your movies, Blu-Ray long-term is going to be the only game in town.

If i ever voted, which i can't be bothered to, I'd vote republican, being as I'm a strong believer in free markets and capitalism. That being said, one of the legitimate criticisms of capitalism is it creates need in people who have no true need. Blu-Ray, quite frankly, seems gratuitous to this Luddite.

I will eventually buy a BluRay player either by Christmas this year, or sometime next year, but I and many friends will not end up buyings hundreds and hundreds of BluRay movies the same way I bought DVD's. When I got a DVD player in 1998, I went crazy buying every movie out there, and most I watched only once, as I would love to have a firesale on my DVD collection these days. With BluRay, I will only buy the 'A' titles that I know will have the replay value: Star Wars, The Godfather, Raiders, Jaws, Caddyshack, Rocky, etc. I made a list of about 50 titles I will buy on Bluray and won't get caught having 500 movies in my collection. That was the boom of DVD, and I suspect most people will be more frugal with their purchases for BluRay.

They're pointless. You can just download everything online. I can understand buying Blu-Ray though. The amazing picture quality makes it worth it. In the long run though, most of you know we're headed towards a downloadable world. We've slowly become a world of convenience. We wanna have our material items while saving time, energy and frustration. The way we only listen to music on our computers. At the press of a button. I can't even imagine picking up a CD/DVD, putting it in the tray, closing it. Just to hear music or watch a music. If I did that it would be like a big event. I just wanna lay back and press buttons. Watch a movie for 15 minutes, move on to some music, go online, get back to the movie, then some music etc. All at the touch of a button. That's our future, like it or not. We're gonna end up like those fat people on floating sofas from WALL-E. Everything we want is there in an instant! Ah the future. You gotta love it!

Actually I'm from the UK and it's not universal here, hell they can't even get digital tv where I live, and 5 meg broadband is the absolute max (and that's unofficial because I bitched like hell, it's only meant to be 2)
Seriously, download isn't going to be something that the average punter will want until a lot of wrinklies have bought the ticket. -
Blu rays are a tax on the stupid. Got a friend who's apartment is a shabby little mess, but he's got a huge plasma on the wall, and a library of about two hundred Blu rays. Talks about his TV all the time, it's always Blu ray this, Blu ray that. He laughs when he sees someone watching a DVD on a modest screen. "Got this on Blu ray, looks sick on my Tv." Buys Blu ray costantly. He buys one, opens it, and spins it, then promptly FALLS ASLEEP fifteen minutes in! Without fail, doesn't matter the movie, or if he's seen it or not, whatever. What the fuck.
-
I have over 100 DVDs - am I going to waste my money replacing them with Blue Ray - uhh no. Blue Ray won't take off and there's nothing the studios can do to make people buy again unless they pull the whole regular DVD line. And if they did I would just pirate everything. Fuck em.
-
Also I know what people mean about downloads taking off but I still buy albums - I only download singles. Plus you can't lend downloaded films to your mates.

-
Or better yet, a time travelling DeLorean??? People seem soooo sure on what will happen in the future. Downloads WILL be the future. No..Blu-Ray is a gateway to a more superior product!!!
Well, I live in the here and now. I own a Blu-Ray player and I love it. Sure, the prices are high (pushing nearly 40 to 50 bucks for new titles here in Oz) but there are sales regularily. And the prices do drop to more a more user friendly $30 after awhile. As for upgrading my faves? Sure do. Upscaling is ok for movies i don't "love". But my event films are getting the Blu-Ray love they deserve.
I can't understand the folk who say they can't see the difference in quality when comparing bewteen the Blu and Standard def discs!? Are you kidding? And if you don't care enough in the first place, then no...you probably aren't the movie fan that some of us on here are. Some of us are a little freaky like that ;)
My girlfriend don't get it, that's for sure.... -
Dude, no way in hell the mass market is gonna be streaming a full-res high bitrate HD movie with lossless HD audio (comparable to HDM) anytime in the next 10 years. You are talking about streaming a 20-80 GB file. Most people would take many many hours to transfer that much data. In order to stream something like that over today's (or even tomorrow's) networks, you need to significantly reduce the quality (compress) of the video and audio. Some people might not mind that, but a lot of people will find it unacceptable given the other available options in HDM (Blu-Ray).
-
How the data arrives is pretty much irrelevant. The only difference between downloading data over the web and buying a disc, is that getting a disc through the post is effectively a very high throughput connection that suffers from high latency. As long as I can do whatever I want with that data once it arrives, it makes no difference whatsoever how I got it.

but only in a rental-type format. For the stuff I buy, I prefer something tangible. That way, I own it and the studio can take the money they earned on the sale and forget about me and my new movie. It'll probably be about four years until I buy a BD player. Just bought two laptops last year, neither of which have BluRay and a portable DVD player. Can't watch BDs on any of 'em. Besides, Toshiba swears to God and anyone else who'll listen that they're developing upconverting technology that'll make regular DVDs look (not quite) as good as BDs on a 1080p screen. I'm skeptical, but I'll wait and see.

Ninety-nine percent of Americans own a Microsoft MovieSpaz. The ingenious little box allows you to download all kinds of movies in 4k resolution. But the future isn't so bright, it's a monopoly. Due to public outcry, Congress starts investigating the movie industry's exclusive distribution practice; a violation of antitrust laws. Their lawyers and lobbyist claim that giving people a choice would lead to economic hardship, thousands of violation checkers would be out of a job (an industry on to itself). Billions in tax revenue would cease if their exclusivity terminates. If it ends they claim, America will be in even further dire straits. Seeing little impact on their on going terror attracts, terrorists decided to do something that would actually effect every single American. On the morning of December 7th, four make-shifts EMP bombs were detonated over the data centers of the major studios. The action results in the loss of half a decade of American cinema history. Movies which were 'filmed' on hard drives and then saved on other digital storage devices disappeared into the ether. People who actually purchased downloaded films (an action which was discouraged by studios - stream them!) now have a commodity. Film collectors band together, trying to recover the lost data and sell the art at an inflated price. The studios made a very public effort to stop it; claiming that the purchasers NEVER had any kind of legal ownership, the receipt was nothing more than a different kind of lease. The data should be handed over, promptly. Those who do will be given a ten percent discount on their next Stream. Purchases said no. Studios using back door access to MovieSpaz players then stole movies from customers. When the piracy was discovered days later, the largest class action suit in American history began. It resulted in retro. Studios must offer features on Stream, download and physical discs. The latter two would give purchasers legal ownership over the product - providing they do not profit more than 25% over the original retail price. Ebay once again is selling new movies on discs. Because of public mistrust, sales of discs soar. Right now it's about fifty-fifty with Streams. An unexpected result occurred, Disney lost ownership to many of their properties made the early 20th century, those shorts and motion pictures went into public domain. Meanwhile the search for the Digital Purge perpetrators is still going on...
-
But after experiencing how good Netflix "Instant Viewing" is STARTING to get, I'm liking the idea.
-
Where the fuck do these analysts pull this shit from? I work in the multimedia department of... well who cares. Our store is located in a rich neighborhood, full of people with expensive HD televisions, so we loaded up on Blu-Ray discs. We probably sell one for every 100 (maybe 200) regular DVDs sold. Your average person doesn't give a fuck, and will continue to not give a fuck.
-
Streaming content will be amazing for rentals, especially considering how crappy most physical rental places selections have become. But when I buy a movie, I want a hard copy.
-
Very very good. So people are predicting an expansion in sales of products that will make them richer and they need to succeed. Listen, don't bother listening to anything anyone says on BluRay, experience it for yourself. It's good, but for 99% of the population it is not that much better than DVD to make the change over. The only reason BluRay will be successful is because of articles like this, sites like this and other comparable movie blogs and most importantly the electronics company themselves. This is digital propaganda on a covert scale that few seem to realise. Look at it this way, in ten years your Mum & Dad will have a BluRay player and will have had to replace a bulk of their DVDs. Do you really think it will be worth their time, are they going to notice this brand new BluRay quality? Of course not, you barely do either.

by chewbaccacabra
Is it like a badge of honor to watch your geeky DVDs through a coax cable on a Wal Mart TV? This is why I went laserdisc in 1990. If Blu stays niche then so be it. And I am perfectly happy still buying DVDs for obscure shit.
-
I agree. The one scary thing is the amount of misinformation still being posted. People still saying BD players don't play SD DVD's or don't upconvert them. They have to "rebuy" everything which is nonsense. Hey I have my special edtion LOTR sets whose transfers are great to begin with and look even better upconverted.
-
I liked both hd-dvd and bluray. I think on a fairly decently sized tv that blu-ray/hd dvd both looked a fair bit better than DVD. You can see the dullness and digital compression quite easily. So I think both a decent improvement.
At current prices I would think bluray won't catch on as fast, but the prices will come down. DVD's weren't cheap when the first came out either, actually quite comparable to bluray now. Bluray will definately be more competive in a few years when the prices have dropped.
And all that being said. How feasible is streaming HD going to be? ISP's are reducing service quality, not increasing. They don't want to upgrade, so their capping, throttling and doing anything they can do to keep people from using their connections. So if you want an HD movie, even if encoded well, you're looking at 8-12 gigs for a 1080p file.
I think bluray will do ok, I think it'll just take a while. -
I'll have the entire Simpson's series on it.

Harry and all these inside industry people are in on it. They say something is succeeding. We believe it and conform to it. It's fucking mind control I tell you! -
I know you really want to convince yourself you didn't piss a few hundred bucks down the drain, but use some common sense here. The most whacked out, extreme estimates for Blu-Ray in 2012 show it having not nearly the level of penetration that SD DVD does. I suspect hard media will always be with us, but that the RENTAL will become a thing of the past.

I should have stated that better. Just tell the public that some analyst says a product is selling better and we like good little drones fall in line. Fuck all that!

Forget even trying to explain the difference between 1:85 and 2:35 to 1. That took years. Again and again the mainstream prove that they're more interested in convenience than quality. Almost everyone wants to listen to music on their portable ipod, which doesn't sound as good as from cd on a good sound system, but they don't care. They really didn't care about standard DVD at first either. Now we take things for granted like CHAPTER STIOPS and not having to REWIND, but these things made watching media EASIER. This is what made dvd fly, not the benefits we all got in the deal. For the general public Blu-ray is about the same as dvd, just more expensive. When the price comes down, it will help. Explaining backwards compatibility will help sell someone wavering. But I still say the very minute instant access downloading and streaming become easy, even if the quality is NOWHERE NEAR as good as hi-def, the masses will almost instantly stop buying discs of any kind at Walmart or anywhere else. They aren't collectors. We are! They just want the new movie of the week, not the moldy old classic like us. Next week they want the next new movie of the week and they've already forgotten last week's movie. The lunitics are running the asylum folks.

Computers will be the hub for everything soon. Hell, your TV will be a computer accessing information via air, Ethernet or other means. At some point processors will be fast enough and codecs will be efficient enough to deliver a HD broadcast streaming or with minimal downloads. But that's for years. You Tube proves quality doesn't matter for short clips but would you watch a 90 min (or 3 hour) clip? I also rad a report that people still using dial-up now have no intention of going broadband.
-
I hate people who can speak english, but can't spell or use grammar correctly. This isn't a text message, it's your local friendly AICN talkback. Sure there is no edit feature, but what happened to good old fashioned proofreading? Also, some of the talkbackers need to know how to start a new paragraph here. It's really simple and easy. Just type the letter p with around it. That said, I agree that downloadable content is the future. A future when we have more availability to higher bandwidth nationwide. I currently live in an area where my only options are dialup (NEVER AGAIN) and satellite internet. I chose WILD BLUE satellite internet. I have a MAX download speed of 1.5 mb. I am capped at 12 gb per month download and even less for uploads. I have been shut down to less than dial up speeds four times in one year. So, I will continue to buy my DVDs, SD and HD, at my local Wally World.
-
And there will be super-hd or some marketing crap by 2012 anyway. Really, 90% of us are happy with good ol dvd's thankyou very much.

What ain't no country I've ever heard of.

What ain't no country I've ever heard of.

I doubt it...

We all will have physical access to film media for a long time to come. Sorry I went off before. Well, not really, but it sounded like a nice thing to say.

High Speed Internet isn't available everywhere!
by stereotypical evil archer
Therefore physical copies of movies will remain justified.
-
And if I get a blu-ray player it'll be a PS3. Still loving the S-DVD's upconverted on my Toshiba HD-DVD player. (And all of the cheap HD-DVD's I've been buying.) oh, and XBL HD downloads, too!
-
Downloading is slow, if I want faster downloading I have to pay more... oh but that depends on whether someone in my fucking area even provides the better internet service to begin with, then even if they do I get a bandwidth limit... I go over it? Oh fuck, I've got to pay more! And that's not even counting the prices of downloading shit... Have you seen the fucking prices??? Shit for the price of renting episodes I can get them all cheaper on a physical format! And I get a box and everything! And even if I do get a sufficient internet speed, I wonder how long buffering will take, and I bet I'll get a real kick out of it when the movie has to buffer several times throughout my viewing of the movie.. because internet access is nigh perfect and never goes down and never drops amirite??? Sorry you chumps, even with blu-ray at the prices that it is now, it's still looking a lot cheaper and more useful than fucking downloading. The only reason people are downloading shit in the millions now, if you haven't figured it out yet... is because they are getting it free thanks to piratey goodness! That's the only reason I'd put up with it, but if I'm going to own something I'm buying physical. It saves me time and money. Maybe in the future when internet is light speed fast and free for all downloading will be the shit, but I'll probably be dead by then. And inevitably blu-ray will win out... when manufacturing the players gets to be the same price as DVD, what do you think companies will do? Continue making DVD players??? Fuck no, they'll be switching to blu-ray permanantly. It's backwards compatabile... and that will be all that's avilable so customers have no choice but to get it and it'll be the same price anyway so there' no room to bitch about it. And when blu-ray costs the same as DVD, you're going to feel like a chump for paying the same price as me and getting an inferior product. But hey I'm not forcing you to do anything, do whatever you want and then deal with it.
-
if you say that then you are fucking blind. Bought the 5 disc Blu ray Blade Runner set, which looked fucking gorgeous. Which I bought from Best Buy for 19 dollars. If you only find movies for 30 dollars, you aint trying hard enough to get cheap prices.
-
I don't think it'll be that widespread... 35-40 bucks for 1 blu-ray (YEAH I've seen a feature length blu-ray movie selling for 40 bucks). Hell no. Especially since the lower middle-class' incomes are getting lower (Example: my mother. My mom had a decent time up until these last two years where her income has decreased--she changed her job because of a-hole backstabbing managers--and her expenditures, mind you essential: rent esp--have exponentially increased. She works 50 hrs/week now. Quite literally if I don't help her soon--which I will though I'm a starving student--she will be homeless in 3 months... I know of other people having similar problems). If $19 bucks is a sale price for blu-ray, that's high. I only buy $15 or less dvds, if I ever.
Plus to get any good out of blu-ray you need to get a $1500 minimum tv so that's an added expenditure. Unless prices go WAY WAY down, I don't think they'll catch on that fast. (I only know of 1 person w/ a blu-ray player and tv to go with it... and his is a ps3.) -
Blade Runner is a 26 year old movie that on Blu ray looks like it was shot yesterday. And in regards to the Playstation 3 it is the best BD player out except for lack of 5.1 Analog outs and IR remote capability. Other than that it beats other players hundreds of dollars more.
-
I hate you, Herc.
-
And I swear to Christ he somehow thought the standard DVD looked better.
-
Yep...the PS3 is what I own, the 60 gig. People that say downloads will take over dont know what the fuck they are talking about.
-
Wow, new technology usurping old technology four years after it's invented??????????????? I think the term is "No Shit, Sherlock."
-
Mori, if you're reading this, please explain how this article is not an advertisement for Blu-Ray.(The word "Blu-Ray" is highlighted in blue on the home page, FYI. Please don't expect me to believe that's because of Harry's enthusiasm for the product, because I won't.)
-
Doesn't matter though... making fun of someone's hilariously ill-conceived backing of a device needs to be repeated.
-
Do people actually REBUY movies? when VHS died, there really could only be a handful of movies you'd actually want to REBUY on DVD... So that complaint is just silly. Bluray will be the standard as long as there's big movie companies to profit off the hardcopy sales. I got bluray, I haven't re-bought SHIT. i mean, WHY?! i got the DVD of everything i want, and when there's something new and cool enough to get on bluray, i'll get that. amazon.com has almost every bluray disk for around $20. which is hardly more expensive than DVDs at a brick and mortar.... and in the next 4 years, bluray disks will drop, DVD will fade away and we'll all wonder what this threat was whining about. We have this conversation after every technological "age". "Compact Disks?! WHAT! i'll keep my Cassettes, THANK YOU! psssshhh!!" How lame does that sound? sounds about as lame as saying bluray is lame. lamelamelame.
in conclusion. lame. :) -
I got a 52" hdtv finally and quickly noticed that my old DVD player now looks like crap so I got a Bluray. The movies now look awesome (even DVDs look great), but the player itself doesn't compare to my old Panasonic DVD player. I got a Samsung and from what I can tell, the others are no better. The take forever to load, make a lot of noise, it takes about 30 second just to open the damned thing, and my biggest gripe of all--if I stop the movie to start again later, I have to sit and wait while it loads and then hunt for the stopping point. On my DVD player I just hit "position memorize" and even if I take out the disc and put it in months later,it goes to exactly the point where I left off. My Bluray has a "bookmark" feature but it only works about 1 out of 20 times. I guess certain discs won't work and even the ones that do, the bookmark erases if you remove the disc. I paid $400 for this and they can't even give me features that DVD was offering 5 or more years ago? It's time consumers and reviewers started calling bullshit on this stuff and stop worshiping Bluray. And as for disc quality--they charge way too much for discs that often don't even have the extras the DVD had. What happened to all that extra storage space? I guess they're saving it for the super special, extreme, unrated 3 1/2 year anniversary director's version--reissuing the same disc every few months has gotten way out of hand and I can't believe that many people keep buying the same disc over and over to make that game profitable for the studios. For these reasons I have only bought 2 Bluray discs. If they ever start giving us our money's worth, I'll buy more, but until then I'll keep getting my Bluray from Netflix and get all I can watch in a month for less than the cost of one overpriced ($35.00 Simpsons Movie) Bluray disc.
-
Let's play devil's advocate here. The future that you are envisioning is limited DRM, multiple dowload use licenses for HD movies. What makes you think the "benevolent" corporate media content masters will allow such a fair model to exist? If for some reason an I-tunes file gets deleted from your hard drive, does I-tunes give you unlimited downloads of the song in perpetuity? No!
What makes you think that will happen with downloaded HD movies in the future? There is no evidence for such benevolence but a lot of conjecture, kumbaya hand holding, hope, and flowers. That and $1.50 will get you a chicken fajita.
Having Verizon FiOS, I can tell you that HD channels and On Demand tend to get frozen screens and digital glitches in the broadcast from time to time, and the system in my area is not even truly at even 35% market share penetration. Can you imagine the stress on such a a download structure if the adoption rate is 40% of households in a market? My guess is that if there are glitches and artifacts in a downlaod, there will be no recourse of credit or redo, just an "aw shucks".
If you can't physically back up your content or get some assurance that your file will be glitch free, you will be throwing money away with paid downloads. Nice future for a bunch of rubes. -
Dude, you got ripped. My BluRay player works fine. When I press stop I have a resume feature that starts the movie exactly where it left off. Don't generalize!
-
That drive anyone else nuts? You're looking at two copies of I Am Legend - one DVD, one Blu Ray. The DVD is normal, slightly sepia coloured tones like the dvd. The BluRay cover has an OVERDOSE OF BLUE TONES!!! This is in every single BluRay DVD cover. It's the same art as the standard DVD, only SLIGHTLY BLUER! Anyone walking by is going to think that BluRay simply makes your DVDs a bit more blue. That blows, if you ask me.
-
you have gone full retard.
-
Check out this advancing technology at Amazon.com
-
... I dunno. Ask the person who posted it, not me. I loveses my BluRay discs (have you SEEN that fucking print of THE PROFESSIONALS?!?!?) but I didn't post this, so I'm not sure why you singled me out for your question. Each editor here is responsible for their own material.
-
In my opinion, until the IETF or an industry group comes up with something that tells vendors on different sides of the local loop how they're supposed to talk to each other to make IPv6 happen automatically, not much is going to happen unless demand reaches "riot in the street" levels. Note that all the necessary ingredients, in the form of numerous protocols, are available, it's just not clear which one you should use for what in which way. (This always happens when there is a new technology: in the early days of dial-up, you needed AT commands and login scripts and in the early days of ISDN you had three or four different protocols, but after a few years, the industry settled on a default choice that worked without user intervention.)
-
...to convert to Blu-Ray when there are films not even released on DVD yet. An example off the top of my head: Todd Field's 1993 film "Ruby in Paradise". Where is the DVD?
Also waiting around for Denys Arcand's "Love and Human Remains" to be released in the US. After those are released, I may switch to Blu-Ray... -
What type of Bluray do you own? At BestBuy and Circuit city all they had were Panasonic, Sharp, sony and the Samsung I got. At both stores, the salespeople told me that none of the BluRay players had that simple feature that the old DVD players have. Also, you say the resume button works when you hit stop. Does it work when you take the disc out to watch something else, then put it back in? Reading the reviews on bestbuy's site it seems like they all have the slow opening/closing and loading drawback.
-
4 years from now DVD will continue to out-sell Blu-Ray despite the formats superiority. Why? 4 years from now hit me up. Give me a job and I'll tell you why you failed.
-
First off, I live in Australia, but that shouldn't factor in at all. I have a Sony BDPS300. Resume works great, but not when I take the disc out. But neither did my Pioneer Standard dvd player. Have to admit, after seven months, it needed to be repaired. The blue laser wasn't working properly. Some movies would pause for no reason and the only way i get the machine to function was to turn it off at the powerpoint and reboot the machine. Wouldn't even play Independence Day at all! Then one, day while happily watching Men In Black, it stopped reading discs all together. After seven weeks in the shop (yes, it was a long time to wait, I got Cloverfield and There Will Be Blood free cause I waited so long) it works like a charm. Hope you do ok.
-
My machine shit itself. Independence Day, Men In Black. Just saying...
-
There are so many great books I want to read, but instead I spend most of my time reading these talkbacks. WTF is wrong with me?
-
but that's when you go and make yaself some popcorn :)
-
...I only know one person who owns a high def TV, and the fucking idiot just watches burnt DIVX files hes pirated from the net.
-
is anecdoctal. No-one I know owns a dedicated Blu-ray player, bar the PS3 and they own zero blu-rays. I can only speak for the UK but financially at present the vast majority of people ABSOLUTELY CANNOT AFFORD AND/OR DO NOT CARE FOR BLU-RAY.
-
So... if Sony wants Blu-Ray to succeed, then why do they keep marketing DVD's better than they market the BR's?
Why would I pay $34.99 for Robocop on Blu Ray when it doesn't even have the unrated cut that the $9.99 standard DVD has? I'm paying over three times as much for half the content! I'm also going to go out on a limb here and imagine that they didn't pump the $$ into the digital clean up to make Robocop worth the HD experience. -
Watched "Once Upon A Time In The West" last night on regular def through the ps3. Upscaled, it looked fucking remarkable; there was very little difference between it and Judgement Day Blu-Ray, quality wise. As it is, I have a pretty big dvd collection and I'm unlikely to buy Blu Ray as I have done with DVD. All bargain bin and downloads from here.
-
That's another valid point.
I STILL can't get hold of a copy of Day of the beast on any form of DVD or download legally. -
Why are Blu-gay discs so expensive?
HD-DVD was /is a much better format. -
Aug 22, 2008 5:33:52 AM CDT
Those of you bitching about shitty Blu Ray players . . .
by chewbaccacabra
really need to do more research before you buy. I have been happy with my second gen Panasonic and when Pioneer Elite gets their shit together I will buy one of their players. But you guys do have a valid point. Why make such shitty players if you want people to adopt this stuff? Why release a format that doesn't have players available with the finalized spec. Both are reasons I bought in HD DVD first. I have a 100 HD DVD discs and three players to last me a good while.
-
... a cash-suck of EPIC proportions!!! Don't let them tell you what to do. It's the MOVIES that matter, not the ability to count the crows-feet wrinkles around Adam Sandler's eyes in a THIRTY FUCKING DOLLAR Blu-Ray disc of "You Don't Mess With The Zohan".
-

with 3.9 terabytes of space to hold eye-searing res. I'd rather have discs for a collection, and backup, and carry about copies on tiny solid state drives.
-
The fact that certain people keep on screaming Sony and then in the same breath talk about a paid spot, I find the heights of comedy. It's like the uninformed (or just plain ignorant) sheep trying to tell others whats really going on behind the scenes.
Thank you for your thoughtfulness..... but you guys are idiots. Please when talking about blu ray, can we get some people to take their sony hate campaign somewhere else? -
as they still look edge-jaggy and have compression artifacts on current 5 or 9 gig DVDs.
-
a venue for obtaining certain flicks and TV shows that'll never be on disc because of overhead and lack of interest (though one needs to be able to make a backup).
-
... go HD for video games. Avoid the PS3 at all costs, with their typically empty promises of an awesome online (free, they insist) gaming community. Sony hasn't given away anything away for free this side of a packet of honey mustard sauce from Rally's in the corporation's entire history. The machine that insists you go Blu-Ray assumes you have no brain between your ears.
-
SeXX ED, I hope your not giving advice here on something you know nothing about.
The PS3's free online is fantastic. I personally play titles like Warhawk and Call of duty 4 the most on the system.
Tell us in what way do you have to pay for online, if you feel so inclined to warn us of these "lies".
And Not only DVDs work fine on the PS3 but I have plenty of media streaming from my computer and an external drive tat allows me to play HD content without the use of Blu ray.
The PS3 is far more open than the 360. -
Go HD for video games? What are you 12? Go HD for the classics. Picture quality is all part of my enjoyment of the film. While HD is still not close to the resolution of film at your local multiplex it's a much better experience than standard definition DVD.
Enjoy Zohan on your 27 inch Sylvania - a "film" most of us wouldn't watch anyway. -
... how's about that DARK KNIGHT huh? The second coming of Christ, that film was,
-
... go fuck yourself. Don't be rude to someone that is simply voicing their opinion. And if you didn't pick up on the sarcasm in my "Zohan" reference, then you're probably not even 12 YET. Don't come empty-handed in a war of wits with me.
-
... go fuck yourself. Don't be rude to someone that is simply voicing their opinion. And if you didn't pick up on the sarcasm in my "Zohan" reference, then you're probably not even 12 YET. Don't come empty-handed in a war of wits with me.
-
... my DICK is bigger than YO MOMMA's Sylvania. A fact which she has confirmed.
-
... I'm not a film "fan". Cinema is my life! I visit this site, quite simply, to get my fix on all things geek in the world of celluloid. I post from time to time on topics that seriously interest me, and that's it. Why, oh why should I have to deal with your half-assed attempt at a witticism? You presented yourself to me as an asshole. Don't do it again to anyone else.
-
... I know what I'm talking about, my man. What I'm saying is that the XBOX has taken online console gaming to an amazing level. Although I'm no advocate of Microsoft, it's just fucking amazingly fun.
-
Yeah I am fucking myself right now! Thanks for the suggestion!
And this message board is all about being rude to each other and George Lucas. Haven't you noticed?
I am done posting on this subject now. But I will leave with this . . . true film fans should embrace this technology (when affordable obviously, I won't begrudge anyone for not buying a Blu Ray player in this economy). It's not a massive conspiracy. Technology evolves.
Personally, I have bought less than 20 "NEW" films on DVD since 2002 and mostly purchsed classics (quite a few are getting the blu treatment now)and foreign and of course Netflixed what I don't see in the theater. I have been waiting for this day to come and I am thankful it has. I'll be enjoying the superior picture quality of Blu Ray whenever possible.
As for the Dark Knight well if any film calls for a new TV purchase thats the one. Depending on finances I may be splurging this fall. -
Is that from a screenplay you are hacking away at?
So glad Cinema is your life. I am fortunate enough to have a few other interests as well. -
In the UK you can buy the HD-DVD drive for the xbox 360 for £25. HMV.com are selling almost the entire HD-DVD back catalogue for £2.99 each. By the time I get through that HD streaming will be more practical.
-
... the PS3's versatility you speak of in your post only applies to a handful of titles (some of which you mentioned). What I am certain of is something the world already knows: NOBODY plays PS3 online. I don't know a single fucking soul that does.
-
... I might go Blu-Ray for DARK KNIGHT. Wow, what an afterthought. Good show, old chap.
-
... it's not exactly "hacking". Maybe "carving". I love you.
-
... somebody's gonna get dead. REAL bad.

It allows me the opportunity to introduce myself to Chewbaccacabra. He is the one I love.

their money in different ways.Me, I will never spend that much for DVD's or a player. There's nothing wrong with the one I have, nor is it or the standard DVD going the way of the dodo bird. As long as I can keep getting quality DVD's for $6 or less, I'm happy. Ong Bak, Road Warrior, Above the Law...all $5 or less. You may continue your posting parade SeXX ED...
-
You're BOTH a couple of snivelling fucking morons.
Specialll ED is one of the moron hordes that think those discs cost 30 bucks. Hardly. You've obviously heard of the internets, but haven't a clue how to use 'em. Transparently pro-360, too.
Chewie, if actually knew anything about film you'd be royally embarrassed to know most films are struck after going through a digital IP stage, which are generally at 2k rez, which is barely above HD. 2048 vs 1920 pixels. You idiot. Oh and HD-DVD DID release incomplete spec players at first. Remember? Of course you don't.
Go play in the sandpit 'til dinnertime the both of you. -
... most of the pussy that you'll NEVER get that me and my main man Chewbaccacabra SUBMERGE ourselves in daily usually presents itself in 1080p (the p stands for pussy). This is standard for people that actually are able to stare down female genitalia from a distance closer than one yard. And, if by the "sandpit" you mean YO MOMMA'S PUSSY, then yes, we shall be there "til dinnertime.
-
The only thing wrong with your DVD player is that it allows you to post on this site. In 480p, no less.

HALF VADER HAS CHOSEN $30 CRACK-HO HANDJOBS and here's why...
by sexx ed
... cuz his MOMMA charges forty. Without the coupon.
-
You see, that's where I have a problem. If I watch my "Godfather part II" DVD on a 19 inch TV, I am somehow not a true fan of film? That is total bullshit.
-
Cute little half vader ever-so-graciously reminded me of the fact that I've "obviously heard about the INTERNETS (uh huh, INTERNETS)". That got me a thinkin'. Had a also heard of the "pussy-less talkbackers"? He may be just a half vader, but he's ALL BRAINS to me, baby.
-
Right on, playboy. Like I said, it's the FILMS that matter, not the show-off-assed gear that BEST BUY insists that you own every Sunday newspaper.
-
... makes Thai lady-boys look like JAMES FUCKIN' BROLIN man!!!
-
UMMM...hate to tell you this, Final Fantasy 13 is going to be released on the 360 as well. Save your money.
http://tinyurl.com/66qake -
Your right, But what i am talking about is not over the internet. It will be something very similar to Digital Cable Or Direct TV. FULL HD Movies streamed instantly.
-
... he might find a group of young men that refer to HIS MOMMA as their first "ride". Thirty-five dollars. They had the coupon. "Super Saver Sunday". Ya dig? Sho nuff.
-
Will really want FFXIII "AND" FFXIII versus.
Which, as of now, is still exclusive to the PS3. But Just because someone wants to purchase a MP title doesn't mean they are going to make a flip. Other factors obviously are involved because chosing one system for MP titles alone is just plain idiotic.
Besides why is this about consoles now? This article was about blu ray movies. -
but until the Criterion Collection starts shippin out BluRays, i could give a shit less. i'll take my 3-disc special feature packed SD Seven Samurai over a bare-bones(but really pretty!) copy of Iron Man any fucking day.
-
... you're absolutely right. And what you're sayin' is all I'm sayin'..... HOLLA.
-
change Iron Man to something like T2 and then it makes sense. :P
-
No good exclusive games and my Vaio can play Blu-Rays. I'm not shelling out $400 for something that I don't need. Once Kingdom Hearts and God of War come out, then I'll change my mind. Unless they decide to lose their exclusivity and release for both the 360 and the PS3 like so many other franchises are doing.
-
Not if you have a decent connection, anyway. I have a Netflix Player by Roku, and a 5 mbps DSL connection (which, unlike cable, is always at least 5 mbps and doesn't slow down when the neighbors get home from work). I watch movies streamed over the Internet onto my Netflix Player all the time. They're in pretty decent quality, too- Kind of like upscaled DVD (providing you connect to a decent HDTV with HDMI).
The only delay in the download is a 10-second pause at the beginning, when I hit PLAY. After that, it doesn't stutter, doesn't stop, doesn't hiccup, and doesn't artifact. It's just as good as physical media. I don't pay Netflix anything extra for this service, either. It's just a part of my $10 subscription to Netflix, and I can watch what I want, when I want. In the future, they'll switch to HD (the box is equipped for it if the content is so encoded).
The only issue is with the content available. Studios aren't diving head-first into this, and as such the Watch Now feature at Netflix is limited to mostly older titles, B-movies, foreign flicks, indie movies, classics, TV series that are available on DVD, and a few big-budget movies from the 80s and 90s.
They're adding more every day. I've been enjoying watching things like Network, High Plains Drifter, Dexter, Soylent Green, The Tick, Sliders, Quantum Leap, Marx Brothers movies, Alfred Hitchcock classics, The Jerk, Young Frankenstein, THX-1138, Lifeforce, and Unforgiven (to name a few). Yeah, I have seen many of these already, and yeah, I probably have a few on VHS or DVD, but this is easier. I just scroll to it and press play.
Now, I can wait a few seconds at the beginning of a movie as opposed to the time it takes to find a disc, open the case, open the DVD player, put the disc in, get through the animated DVD menu (sometimes the menus take a minute before you even get to start the movie), press play, skip previews, and then watch my movie.
Anybody complaining about how downloads are slow either has a crap Internet connection, or they don't realize how much of their life is wasted queueing up a DVD.
I still watch DVDs. I still get them every couple of days in the mail, and I occasionally buy them, but I'm not rushing out for a Blu-Ray player yet. I've had HD movies playing at home, and the difference just wasn't impressive enough for me to spend $400 on it.
When Blu-Ray is $99 for the player, plus $14.99 for discs, I'll consider it. Until then, it's a niche product that cost a LOT more than my Netflix Player, and doesn't impress me all that much. I'm usually the first in town to get a particular gadget, but minor tweaks in visual clarity do not warrant rushing out to join the dozens of Blu-Ray owners. -
I finally got myself a 37" LCD TV, and I hooked my Xbox360 up to it with the included component cables.
All I can say is: DAMN!
Blu-rays look good, but is it worth the separate machine + paying twice as much for movies? Hell no.
Sony was smart in putting Blu-ray in the PS3, but otherwise, I don't see why anyone would go out of their way for it. Marketing gimick! -
Instead of using component cables, use the VGA-HD cable, and if you don't have a VGA/D-SUB port on your TV, then grab a DVI or HDMI adapter (depending what you have on your TV).
Why? Because the Xbox 360 will upscale DVDs if you use the VGA-HD cable, but not if you use component.
You'll get a crisper near-HD image, and it won't cost more than $35 extra if you're a smart shopper. -
I also watched "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" on dvd (less than 2 weeks ago), which was upscaled on an HD-DVD player. That opening scene looked incredible, rich with visual detail. (And what a flick.) Depending on the transfer, dvd upscaling can be very satisfying. You just need the right machine to do it. - Here's to looking forward to seeing what the NEW "Toshiba XD-E500 1080p Extended Detail DVD Player" can do!

Fuck these fecking Analysts!! IT'S NOT LIKE WE HAVE A CHOICE!!!

These so-called "analysts" are no more that PR think tanks hired by said companies. I'll fecking drop bombs on all Blu-ray factories a few months before the next olympics, there you fucking go, analyst!

***** AICN - PLEASE REVIEW the Toshiba XD-E500 1080p DVD Playe
by jdanielp
We need to know if the new technology behind this 1080p "Extended Detail" DVD Player is worth the hype. And personally, I'd appreciate any testing on both a 32" LCD and anything else 46" or larger.

Those of us old enough to remember the emergence of cassette tapes can also remember when pundits and experts alike declared that one day, all the libraries of the world, and all the book stores of the world, would feature shelves filled with nothing but plastic boxes full of cassette tapes - that print medium would quickly become a part of history.
Book stores continue to rank among the highest retail earners nationwide and globally. The same was said when "e-books" first emerged in the late 1980s. This would be how book stores evolve, they told us. You'd walk into a book store, hand over your E-Player, and pay to have 500 of your favorite novels downloaded from their terminals.
yeah right.
Sorry guys - history has proven that digital 'anything' will always be a fad and a vanity purchase - and nothing will replace the tangible medium you hold in your hand, be it books, or videos. -
because I only know a couble of people with players so I don't have everyone borrowing my shit all the time.
-
If I can buy a player for under 50 bucks, and it can play divx files, and I can get a blu-ray burner for under 50 bucks, and if I can buy recordable blue-ray media for about 22 cents each, and be able to burn a copy from netflix, then yeah, that sounds about right.
-
for a second I thought I was logging in....I'm a doofus!

no reason to buy a PS3 by PirateEmery "No good exclusive games"
by its a lion
You must not have noticed the release of a fun little niche title by name of Metal Gear Solid 4.
-
Blu Ray has a natural resolution of 1920×1080, whereas DVD has a natural resolution of 720×480. To claim that the picture is even half as good as Blu Ray is a lie. To say that DVD is being displayed at anything better than it's capable of is equal to digitaly recording a VHS tape and claiming it's of the best digital quality. It's not.
-
i will just buy and use whatever format is the most convenient to watch the stuff i want to watch, thanks. perhaps you chaps should do the same, but please do not feel that i am in any way attempting to stop you and your bizarre defences of a variety of similar Japanese products...
-
Thanks for trying to be reasonable here but it seems as if there is a large amount of people who seriously believe that a large portion of this worlds population actually "know" what they are doing.
The argument always changes for those same people. "The reason why HD DVD will win is because the average joe will associate DVD with HD DVD and then they will understand. Blu ray as a medium wil confuse folks." and then the next statement is "Digital Downloads are the future. Everyone will be doing it.
The Average Joe is apparently an idiot when it comes to solid media but a genius when it comes to downloading stuff. -
because I'll never pay more than $20 to own a DVD, regular or BluRay.
-
I see what you mean, and I agree. But what about downloaders who build their own libararies by burning the movies they DL? Sure, you don't have the fancy cover art (although you can DL that, too), but you DO have a physical medium you can keep on your shelf for when you want it.
Frankly, I'm guilty of DL a flick or two. Usually stuff I've already paid to see at a show. Sure, I know it's kinda wrong, but I do see the analogy with copying your friend's old Def Leppard cassette in high school, or whatever. Only today millions of people share their media freely online with strangers on other continents.
I guess for me, nothing will ever beat seeing a great movie at the show. And while I'd love to amass a personal library of DVDs of my favorite movies, it's not feasible and today's prices won't allow it. So if I REALLY want to have something for keepers, I usually rent the disc or DL it and copy it and store it in a paper sleeve. Very rarely will I do that with a movie I didn't pay to see at the show. Sure, I know that doesn't mean I'm entitled to also snatch a copy for home--but when you ask $30 for Indy 4 on DVD, you're not gonna get it. You're gonna get DL'd -
I'm well aware that it's not true HD. However, I do want to know how it compares to true HD on Blu-ray and how it compares to other dvd players that upscale. And I want various opinions from AICN. As an owner of many dvds, it's important to me.
-
You have no idea what you're fucking talking about. I can give a fuck what the numbers tell me. I judge with what I see with my own fucking eyes. And yes....upscale dvd players look far far better than a regular old fashioned dvd player. So fuck off.
-
First put down the cup of coffee... take a couple breaths...good. Secondly, being that I have a major in photography, my guess is that I have a better eye than you. To me, now that I have a Blu Ray player, Upscaled DVD looks like VHS to me. But if you're satisfied with upscaled DVD, good for you. You'll eventually repurchase everything in Blu Ray anyway. It's a given. Starting 4th quarter, Blu Ray will become more affordable.
-
I will also buy the Lord of the Rings set, the original Indiana Jones trilogy, The Godfather collection, and a few others. Then I'll continue to buy Blu-Ray DVDs, just wait a month or two after they're released so the price drops. I see absolutley no reason to upgrade by entire 200+ library, but a few won't hurt.
So I'll be a regular buyer of Blu-Rays in four years. But as for the rest of the people? I can't say. I think digital downloads won't happen at the rate some people predict, though it will probably be an excessive force at some point in the next ten years - like music is today. It doesn't dominate the market but it holds a share. -
Just got a HD television. regular TV looks beyond crap. HD service looks really awesome. upscaled DVD to 1080i via hdmi cable is pretty good... but no where near as awesome as hd. And, as I understand it, Blu ray will put my cable HD service to shame, which is pretty mind blowing. And I'm sorry, but zoefan's analogy of of "upconvert DVD is to Bluray as VHS is to DVD (on a standard definition television)" is pretty darned accurate.
But I am extending the middle finger to download service and further offering them to ride it. reasons are numerous: physical media more reliable, and I'm sure there'd be yet another monthly fee to pay for your "Netflix HD box" on top of the money you are paying to "buy" the movies. I don't have to pay a monthly fee to "own" my dvds. and the movie industry is not the Mother Fucking music industry. The music industry really has literally taken it's Cock, (puny and flacid as it is,) and rammed it back into the same Pussy that birthed the music industry in the first place, producing lots and lots of very retarded and malformed children. so there. -
...none of this will matter. Not saying I believe it, but there are more pressing issues in the world, folks.
-
so the more pressing issues are figuring out of a bunch of ancient fucking mayans were right about fucking doomsday? (besides, the "date" is based on a fundamental error in understanding that calendar. the "date" is actually supposed to be like another 10 thousand years in the future, or something. back when history channel had some credibility, they had a show that discussed this. They don't air that one anymore, just the "were all doomed" version they made a year later.) But fuck it. These dates never pan out. Did Skynet take over the world and destroy mankind because of the millennial bub on January 1st, 2000? no. And there were 88 reasons that Jesus should have come back in 1988. Did He? No, He decided to put that off a few more years, (or centuries.) So, no, don't be phased by doomsdates. The good prophets know not to give you a date anyway, because that way they are never technically proven wrong.
-
and honestly think that they'll ever be the main way of getting films....one good blackout in a major city- remember when blackberry went down for a day? or an EMP burst, by some disaffected individual or group (But,there aren't any of those out there are there?)anywhere and see what happens....Physical copies will continue to dominate the markets...
-
In the U.S., big titles are STILL being released on regular DVD in both widescreen and 4:3 editions. How the fuck is Blu-Ray going to penetrate a market where Joe Blow is STILL BUYING 4:3 DVDs to an extent where it's profitable to keep manufacturing them? Blu-Ray will gain more support than laserdisc did, but it will ultimately stop short (way short) of the success of regular DVDs. When Joe Blow is finally ready to upgrade from the DVD format, something else will have come along and put Blu-Ray out to pasture.
-
But, like I said, until FF13 comes out, I'm not hurting for a BluRay players. Yeah, good on them for moving FF13 and Resident Evil 5 to the Xbox 360, but MGS4 is still enough to keep me going to a PS3... eventually. My Wii and PS2 will tide me over for another year and a half or so.
-
...I guaran-goddamn-tee you that no more than a few days after the first "Blu-Ray only" release is sprung upon the world, there will be a reg DVD rip online.
-
For newer movies a premium of almost double the price just isn't worth it. The few Blu flicks I've gotten have either been bought for me, or I've nabbed deals off eBay. My PS3's upconvering of regular DVD's is good enough for me until the prices come down a lot more. Why would I pay $35 for a movie when i can get the same film for $15? Early adopters pay a premium, yes, but Blu-Ray owners are getting raped.
-
I have a massive DVD collection as well as thousands of books and sometimes I fucking love just looking at them on their shelves. I like owning a tangible form of media and I'm not alone in this.
I do own an iPod, but there's not one scrap of music on it that I haven't burned onto a disc for my collection.
If you entrust your film "collection" to a company which you're paying for access to it, and they decide to raise the fee or you can't access "your" movies because of a sucky connection or a late payment, then you fucking deserve it.
If you decide to keep all your movies and music on a drive of some sort and it breaks down, then you're a stupid motherfucker.
Downloads are coming, no mistake, but physical media will NEVER disappear. If they one day decide to never release movies or music on physical media again, then I will never pay a goddamn cent for either ever again. -
If you notice, I used the Mayan calendar thing as a joke to preface that there are more important things to worry about, get it?
-
And yes I own a PS3, and it's mostly used to play games (exclusive Ps3 games, that is.)but I prefer watching my movies on my standard DVD players that can upconvert to 1080p. Why the fuck should i replace thousands of dollars worth of DVDs for Blew-gay?oh, so that the studios can get more money from me.fuck that shit. I'll stream DiVx to my Xbox 360. Although i have pre ordered Ironman On BR. heh, heh.
-
Have you heard Patton Oswalt's bit on KFC? It might be a bit too close for comfort... ;)
-
people are still bitching about replacing their dvds. i guess constant "you dont have to" is just flying over their heads. now cue those people to make up an excuse to bitch about that too.
-
STILL with the "replace my collection" and "$30" bullshit? Jesus wept.
Yes Stalkeye, why would you? You do know the new players are backwards-compatible, right?
Special eDD, you're so witty! And original!
And you not having heard of the whole "internets/interwebs" joke confirms my suspicions, especially on AICN, you little imbecile.
As for my mum, you're welcome to her. Joke's on you mate!
Zoefan, don't feed the troll. Jdaniel has no shame, and loves to be arsefucked by Tosh after they spat on his HD-DVD owning behind. -
Same date and same price as their regular DVDs. The ONLY label worth paying 30 bucks for.
-
Some people have a hard time understanding that.
-
That person would be you (who already has hd-dvd and an upscaling player).
Quit it with the leafiness dude.
Mode 7, the Aussie outback is fine. They've got satellite! -
But my parents do NOT have an "upscaling" player (and they aren't interested in Blu-ray). And yet, they do have a VERY nice 1080P LCD. (What's wrong with THAT picture?) Holy, cow. Cut a guy some slack. If an upscaling dvd player sets a new standard (for said format), I'm interested.
-
Last night, wife and I watched part of Serenity in HDDVD on my panny proj. The movie sucked, so we turned it off and put on There Will Be Blood, a standard dev dvd. Now this was on the Xbox 360 hddvd player...which is an average at best upscaler (my other hddvd player, the Toshiba, is way better). 15 minutes into the movie, my wife and I looked at each other, and commented how little difference there was in the picture quality. The HDVD was sharper on some FX scenes, but the difference was not that striking. Saying upscaled dvd looks like VHS is just retarded.
-
standard dvds on my Toshiba HDDVD player/upscaler looking SHOCKINGLY good on my Samsung LCD tv....especially Twin Peaks....as close to highdef as I need.
-
What happened to "my wife and I"? You have the 360 add-on that can also upscale, right? That's why the cracks about leafiness - if you find out for YOURSELF anything about this particular model of new upscaling player you'd be incensed at how they completely discount your hd-dvd supporting arse. THAT'S why. The fact that you completely ignore all my points on this and act like it's all new to you and you're completely innocent makes me more tenacious.
Just trying to get through to you that you shouldn't blindly support people who are actively shitting where they live. Also, on many HDTVs the upscaling is inbuilt, adjustable to your preference and you don't even NEED the player to do it. If you're saying the player is for your parents, you might actually wanna check the TV itself...
Added to the irony is Toshiba's new products literally use the PS3's tech to do this sort of stuff. Understand my frustration yet? Just stop it with the 'innocent' act dude. -
Good god. Is this all because I'm not "yet"(?) feeding the Blu-ray format? -My parents have a very nice, big, 1080p LCD with a basic dvd player attached (Don't ask me why.) ...to watch movies. (Otherwise, their Sony LCD would be drool-worthy.) The dvd picture isn't horrible but I know that the tv is capable of much better. (Our dvd-upscaling HD-DVD player puts it to shame, on our Sharp Aquos, in my opinion.) And this new Toshiba XD-E500 1080p upscaling dvd player sounds like it would be a GREAT Christmas gift, for them. And as for you mentioning the PS3 tech,...then how about AICN compare the PS3 dvd-upscaling to this new Toshiba? Or are you afraid...that the results will show that Toshiba knows how to make better use of such tech? (Or will it appear to be Sony's way of adding contrast between dvd and Blu-ray?) I don't hate Blu-ray...but some people make it easy to. - The ONLY thing I'm asking for... is an honest opinion from various AICN staff. I want a product review, good or bad. Here. At AICN. Is that asking for too much?
-
And the opening six minutes were there, in High Def glory.
My god. case in point. My girlfriend in very MEH to the whole Blu-Ray vs standard def, but even she went "Oh my..."
i got sex.
thankyou heath. -
of THE DARK KNIGHT! Just thought i'd clarify that seeing as i left that little point out...
-
The whole point for unleashing movies on a new HD media platform was simply because there was hope after the huge succes of media on DVD, that billions of us would re-buy all those movies and concerts AGAIN. Yeah, right. Now, I have nothing against HD perse, the reason why I haven't gotten very excited about either HD DVD or Blu-Ray yet, is because I know from experience 99% of all movies bought only get watched once + I would absolutely hate to see a new, no doubt superior physical format being unleashed upon us again after spending my hard earned (again)on Blu-Ray media. And yes, the shameless promotion on this site for BR discs is really annoying.
-
I can see how you'd think I'm all pro-PS3 or Sony or whatever if you weren't paying attention. It's got nothing to do with Blu-ray really either. Every new post of yours shows you either don't understand what's being said or willfully ignore the points raised.
I'm saying that the TOSHIBA 'SPURS' image engine is based on the PS3 cell technology developed by IBM, Toshiba and Sony. Get it?
You still don't seem to understand that you may not even NEED an upscaling player at all, because the set itself may do it well - have you even looked through the manual of the spanky new TV your parents own (that you managed to forget to mention every previous post)? And looked at the upscaling capabilities? Did it occur to you that as far as Toshiba are concerned they may be implementing the same upscaling technology in both upscaling DVD-players AND their TV sets? Negating the need for both? What brand LCD are you talking? You need to consider more than one variable.
I'm not hawking Blu-ray. I don't care - and I've said over and over that much of the HD movie stuff whether BD or HD=DVD was and is great. I don't think HD-DVD fans lost out completely, especially when it comes to buying a good product - the discs don't stop playing just because MS and Tosh lost the war. Do you get it yet? Even if I said BD was better doesn't mean HD-DVD wasn't /isn't great too.
I'm saying don't support THIS player because they've been completely hawking it by spitting in the face of every HD-DVD owner, with pathetic face-saving rants that lie and ridicule both themselves and their supporters. Obviously you haven't read any of that stuff for yourself and seeing as you never mention it in any post even to refute it, there's no saving you. Go-on, live in denial, pretend you're just innocently asking for advice.
Doesn't sound like you've taken screensize/viewing distance or the quality of your/parents' eyesight into account either.
The "just asking for AICN's opinion" thing despite me and others on the TB trying to get through to you is laughable too. What? The TBers don't have as valid an opinion? Not to mention NOT ONE of the AICN staff whose opinion you obviously value on tech is a hardware expert either! So why listen to them over anyone else?
Did you not understand a single joke about "Harry recommends HD-DVD" over the last couple of years?! The whole reason we all ridiculed him is that the initial posts were blatant propaganda where he hawked HD-DVD after being payed a visit by the HD-DVD 'evangelists' (yes they were officially referred to as such!) and received tons of free movies. No crime in that, if he hadn't at the SAME TIME spread garbage and outdated info about the competition. Other mods weren't as bad but admitted their reasons for purchase had not much to do with 'fair appraisal' through contrast or competition. I don't remember a single A/B comparison, though I could be mistaken there. If only AICN's search engine wasn't such a joke (not being nasty - mods agree).
SO basically you shouldn't ask for or trust in the AICN's staff on hardware issues. No, you're not asking too much, you're asking in the wrong place. You want it (good or bad) from people who've proven already they shouldn't give it!
And certainly not in preference to other opinions that are just as valid. We can't help but notice that you never asked once about anyone else's new iterations of the same upscaling tech. Only Toshiba's.
Have you visited a SINGLE AV/tech site? I don't think so, especially as you keep posting the same damn thing in multiple forums.
Have you heard about the contrast feature crushing black detail? Nope. Didn't think so.
I at least have a legitimate reason to be overheated, and if ever a product legitimately deserved a vendetta against it, it's this one. I'd call off the hounds and just be annoyed at the marketing/sour grapes crap if it was the same price as other upconverting players as it should be, but it costs TWICE as much. Bull-shit I say. Ever heard of a silk purse from a sow's ear? This is pretty much that in terms of face-saving (although they did get their just deserts for the whole greedy SED fiasco). You want good Tosh stuff? Try the new rapid-charge Lithium battery chargers or the new Tosh flash cards.
That's it for me though. Hopefully you appreciate how friendly I've been in the past and how the overarching point of all this was to protect you as a fellow Toshiba supporter. I'm not going to waste my breath on you any more constructing valid arguments and giving helpful information.
From now on you'll just be that troll under the bridge. -
Jaws, at least jDaniel and I can agree that all these hd/upscaling players/TVs means YOU DON'T HAVE TO RE-BUY. For fuck's sake! If you noticed, part of the hd spiel is that they're backwards compatible so you DON'T HAVE TO RE-BUY. Jesus!
DeanBarry, I posted a reply in the other tb letting you know BD Halloween has been out since last year, and is 50% off online.
Also, Batman Begins on Blu-ray is the same encode as the HD-DVD version. Only difference is some extra stuff like that DK preview. -
I love that after the Bay's fiasco with "I drank the Blu-ray kool-aid" and how much better 300 was on HD-DVD (when it was bit-for-bit the same encode as the BD), AND his flip-flop BACK to Blu-ray, that he HAD to remaster Transformers again. Too funny!
-
Hi buddy, I know very well I can play my DVD's on any HD player and I don't have to re-buy anything. There were 2 reasons for bringing HD hardware players and software to the markt. 1. The idea was the content on the discs would be "uncrackable", so that would put an end to the copying/ripping and uploading those zeros and ones to torrent sites. 2. (Already mentioned...), that billions of us would make billions again for (Sony) and the movie companies by re-buying their movies on discs again. And that's not gonna happen again, at least nowhere near like what happened during the first 10 DVD years. That's all.
-
That I'm happy to talk with you about other stuff where you can be reasonably sane, just that this whole Tosh thing and your 'position' on it are dead to me.
-
Why would they advertise with just as much vigour that your supposedly redundant DVDs work great and look great regardless? I don't see how it contradicts pushing classic titles on HD either.
I've never owned Casablanca or Adventures of Robin Hood before, so if I buy 'em it'll be HD.
There are a LOT of classic/catalogue films I don't have on DVD, even though I have the best part of a thousand DVDs. I'll play those DVDs through HD too without re-buying them. No conflict. Being completely honest, there are a handful I would re-buy, but it has nothing to do with the HD/BD campaign which as I said I don't think are saying that anyway. For instance, I love Seven Samurai. I bought it on Laserdisc. I re-bought it when they remastered it on DVD. I'll rebuy it on HD (and sell the old one like before). But that's one of only a few. I still play my Star Wars original LDs. They haven't stopped working. -
Yes, I've been through Laserdisc before as well (although my expensive Pioneer player with automatic reverse-system became wonky years ago, which is unfortunate). Yes, the manufacturers get the compatibility across, which is a must otherwise HD players wouldn't sell hardly at all. But my points are valid aren't they ? Don't you think the folks behind the players and movies don't all really want us to buy their back-catalogues again ? About choosing what to re-buy or not, the thought of that alone makes me kinda queasy, like I said, if you (like me) have a collection of thousands of movies, having been through VHS, Laserdisc and DVD, that's something I really don't want to get compulsively obsessed about again. Just imagine spending thousands and thousands again on hard and software only to see some more advanced media coming up in 5 years from now because BR didn't catch on as hoped by the companies. I really don't think that's a sci-fi scenario at all.
-
they HOPE we'd all buy everything again, but realise we're not all that rich and/or stupid, so they send both messages. They do want newer generations/customers or those that never owned the old stuff to buy it this way though, that's for sure.
Like I say, JDaniel can still play his HD-DVDs regardless, we can still play our Laserdiscs and for that matter Blu-rays in the event that REAL high-bitrate, 1080p or better high-def downloads happen. Which won't be for a decade because outside the insular Americatech world of hardcore gamers, low bandwidth will still be rife and caps have been a reality all over the real world. It's just not gonna happen any time soon.
I think we can say VHS and its crumbling, magnetic-field-vulnerable tape is a wash though. -
2012-Blu Ray discs. 2014-streaming HD box thing. 2016-movies are broadcast directly into the brain via micro methane lasers. 2018-ALL FORMS OF ENTERTAINMENT ARE HEREBY OUTLAWED BY ORDER OF LORD BUCANO THE GREATER!
-
yes, I know that Blu ray players are backward compatible. as i have mentioned that i own a ps3. (Duh!) As for replacing DVDs for the Blu ray format, which is overrated IMO is a waste of money with maybe the exception of certain favorite films.Blu ray looks better than standard DVD, but not by the HUGE difference we are being told.
-
makes for fun talkbacks. :P
-
That's what I'm looking forward to. Everyhing looked so real.
-
I don't give a damn WHO makes a better upscaling dvd player. It's just that my parents could use a really nice 1080p upscaling dvd player (and, if possible, is simple to use). - And don't even try that cable/view distance/tv upscaling bullshit against me. (Duh) And yeah, (laughing), I'm quite certain I don't have to consider my folks eyesight. After all, a better picture usually benefits anyone who can actually SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
-
Sure, he loves his High Definition, be it Blu-ray or HD-DVD. (Who wouldn't?) But I'm just as certain that he would appreciate a dvd player that goes beyond anything before, within the format. (I'm not over-hyped. I wouldn't even call myself a believer. I'm only curious if the upscaling technology is getting any better.)

They are the Laserdisks of their generation.
Holographic TVS and HVD/HSD are the future.
Think about it. The Dark Knight in 3D. 300 in 3D. Terminator 2 in 3D. The Matrix in 3D. PORN IN 3-FUCKING-D!
Without the glasses. They are a aprox one billion now and are used in casinos and government facilities. I am 21 now, in my late 30's they will be at high end market price like Blu-Ray is now. But like DVD back in the day, people are going to eat this up no matter what the cost! -
Regarding Halloween on BD. Fuck! We have to wait for everything down under. I'd buy it online, but my player is different region encoded and wouldn't play something from the good ol' U.S of A. As for the Batman Begins disc, yeah..I know it was originally HD. When i wanted it, it was out of print. Sigh.
-
Check one of the region coding lists. You can buy that one from Amazon no problem - it's region-free. The majority of them are. There may be only 3 regions now, but the thing's still a farce. I'm an Aussie too. Generally I buy U.S. as it's cheaper (even now our dollar's dropped a bit). Sometimes, U.K., sometimes Oz. I just check the region status & go for the cheapest as now there's no pal/ntsc grabage or difference in resolution. I do buy a bunch of stuff at a time to cut down on shipping per item though. Generally there's a bit of a hit first up, then it drops to about 4 bucks per title/book/whatever on the express courier, cheaper if you can wait a bit longer.
As for waiting longer, it's weird. Some stuff comes much earlier, some much later. I'm regretting getting Sweeney Todd with the bullshit selective DNR and not waiting though. Makes my blood boil considering the context...

Is a region coding info site. Cheers.
