Bill O'Reilly Premieres The Trailer For David Zucker's AN AMERICAN CAROL!
Beaks here...
I know this trailer "debut" is a couple of days old, but it's worth posting anyway. AN AMERICAN CAROL is the howl of outrage David Zucker has been building to since 9/11. Obviously, it's a riff on Charles Dickens's A CHRISTMAS CAROL, but, per Hollywood Elsewhere's Jeffrey Wells, its direct inspiration may be the Looney Tunes short, "Old Glory".
While I vehemently disagree with Zucker's politics, I'm actually rooting for the guy to disprove the notion that conservatives other than P.J. O'Rourke can't be intentionally funny. Has he delivered? We embed, you decide...
Vivendi Entertainment will give AN AMERICAN CAROL a wide release on October 3rd.

David Zucker gets one aspect of good political humor that liberal humorists tend to take into account: lampoon the other side as hard as you want to, but never forget the shortcomings and stereotypes of your own side. Liberals embrace their pot-smoking hippie stereotypes and we're happy to give them a few pokes from time to time. Zucker's doing the same thing on the other side - he's having fun with these hardass, singular-vision conservative stereotypes even though he clearly embraces them.
I don't think I'll see this in theaters, but it looks like a hell of a lot more fun than anything the Wayans Brothers or Friedberg/Seltzer have done lately. -
This is going straight to dvd, at least here in non-english speaking europe
And yes, it looks painfully dumb -
Because it comes off as somewhat arrogant and all, "no one else better dare disagree with the sentiment."

It looks a lot better than just about every movie dealing with America in any way, even tangentially, that's come out of Hollywood in the recent past. I have a feeling this will be very popular in the center of the country, and not so much around the edges. Oh, and StarWarsRedux, if you're so ashamed by patriotic people, I invite you down to my neck of the woods. You'll be mortified, and I always get a kick out of mortified liberals.

Supposedly there's a scene where George Washington takes Michael Moore to Ground Zero and accuses him of using free speech to disrespect "the dust of 3000 innocent people."
Bear in mind I haven't verified that, but if that's really in the final cut, fuck this movie. -

First off I freely admit I agree with a lot of Michael Moore's politics. And I can't stand him. He certainly is ripe for satirization, but from the looks of the trailer, all they are doing is turning the tables on Moore, attacking his heavy handed, skewered liberal bent with a heavy handed, skewered conservative one. Which totally misses the point of what's wrong with him. When is someone going to make a satire directed towards the fact that ham handed rhetoric from both sides of the political spectrum are mirror images... doing the exact same thing... exhibiting the exact same fear of honest discourse... and that the exact political bent it subscribes to doesn't make it any better or worse.

His take on "Big Oil"(having them volunteer 2 percent of their profits) is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard since I have been a grownup. Airplane is one of the funniest movies ever. And if you added up all of the "funny" stuff from this site's contributors, including some of the catchphrases that have developed and the conversations they spawned, spanning over a decade, it still wouldn't stand up to one half hour of Police Squad.

The argument against David Zucker is that he lost the funny when he converted. All of his classic stuff was written when he was a Democrat. I know he'd say that he hasn't really changed, but I doubt he voted for Reagan in '80 or '84.

That he can still be funny. That he's not a has been, a wash up. Some movies made in the 80's doesn't disprove that. It's not like he has stopped working. Tell me the Scary Movie sequels, My Boss's Daughter, Baseketball etc. have not tailed off sharply from his work on Airplane, Top Secret, etc. And remember, those were collaborations with Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams. He's hardly proven he can be funny without them.

I'd read it as a parody of conservative fear mongering, but I doubt the target audience would (not that that matters). It's actually one of the funnier ideas in the trailer (which isn't terrible by any stretch).

Moreover!! I would argue that the diminishment of Zucker's funny is more likely attributable to his age than his switch in politics. (It saddens me to admit even Woody Allen and Albert Brooks are not what they were.)
Finally, because I'm sure everybody now sees me as an agent of Fox News, I will point out that I've never voted Republican in a general election and that Hercules The Strong was the co-host of record of the Kerry/Edwards 2004 High Stakes fundraiser in the heart of Blue-State Hollywood. -

I don't see how anyone can find any of the Scary Movies funny (Wayans/Zucker/Scorsese/whoever). They were all flat out terrible, painfully unfunny. I'm writing as a guy who loved Airplane, Naked Gun, Hot Shots. The Scary Movie idea is to just set up the shot so the audience recognizes the film being lampooned, then throw Leslie Nielsen or Marlon Wayans in front of it as thought that automatically makes it funny. This "American Tail: Fievel Goes Far Right" looks straight up awful, plus the added weirdness of having the ghost of Chris Farley dressed up like Michael Moore. Strange times.

Whenever Michael Moore tries to do just plain jokes, he frequently falls flat on his ass. Airplane had some vaguely anti-Reagan jokes, but they were pretty lame. It's very hard to do real political humour, because making a point and making a laugh are often different things. Colbert is probably the best at it, but his work is often extremely subtle.

Have to disagree there. Miller was funny before he became conservative. If you look back at his pre-conservative comedy, he made fun of EVERYONE equally. He laughed at the absurdity of politics in general. Once he became conservative his humor became partisan and his mind turned to cheese. Suddenly everything liberals do is absurd, but nothing conservatives do is. It's hard to respect the man after being so familiar with who he was before he got the shit scared out of him by the brown people.

I come to this site every single day and rarely ever talkback... but this is just too much! How many honest to God Republican movies (I'm not being punny not all conservatives are religious, ass holes) do they really make? Also, I would argue Matt Stone and Trey Parker are the funniest Republicans even if they don't call themselves Republicans. They sure do see the world like I do. Looks more like Meet the Spartans, as an above poster said, than any sort of biting political satire. The only people seeing this are the people who dished out money to see Meet the Spartans, and the lemmings who worship O'Reilly and Hannity and only think what they're told to think.

Just because Allen's movies aren't outright comedies any more doesn't mean they aren't good. Match Point was fantastic and Vicky Christina Barcelona looks pretty good.
As for Brooks, he was pretty damn good in the first half of this crazy new season of Weeds, and for the love of god he was in Finding Nemo.
And this movie looks like utter shit. I wish Farley's career was better off, it would be nice to have ONE good Farley doing SOMEthing. test -

It comes down to the targets you go after. Liberals tend to side with the little guy so most of the humor out of that camp are against the ones with the money and power. If we're taking this movie on it's own terms, it still fails. The one time I've seen a conservative comedy that works was Team America: World Police. MorbidObesity, the first place I heard about Edwards's affair was on Salon.com, a liberal news source. The day that Edwards confessed about his affair it was all over cable news for several days. The National Enquirer is hardly the most reputable piece of journalism, even though it may have gotten lucky once or twice. By the time their story hit Edwards was a failed presidential candidate who was not currently holding office. This made the story less interesting and less important. If you truly think the media is liberal because they don't agree with your radical views, then you're truly crazier than you sound.

Damn...now I can't watch "Airplane" ever again....I still think its the most clever of its type. I wish I hadn't known. If you want to say that Die Hard and Top Gun are Conservative movies go right ahead... but I was pretty sure they don't have any sort of political agenda attached to them. In my experience liberals get volcanically, violently angry when faced with truly funny, biting conservative humor and I think Hollywood understands this. Conservatives have thicker skins for obvious reasons. When humor is mean-spirited, there's a moment where you make a value judgment. Does the humor come from the right place... and does it have a right to be mean?
If you turn an obvious propagandist like Moore (who's fairly good at painting cruel establishment bastards as larger-than-life cruel establishment bastards) into a sexual-assaulting modern-day slave owner and call that satire, you're not funny. You're just doing a really sad character assassination, selling it to people so bothered by Moore that they'd rather see him painted well-beyond unfairly... and, you're a prick with more studio clout than you ought to have.
The slave references really bother me. Because a great many of the pricks behind this film belong to country clubs and the echelons of establishment... even if it's just the nouveau riche. I'm ashamed to see a number of people I actually enjoy in movies associated with this turd sandwich.
Finally, this film wallows its own ignorance, and its for those who want to believe the unsubstantiated snippets they hear on talk radio.
Moore's movies can be compared to what Letterman did early on at NBC: showing up unannounced at GE, asking to get in to see someone way to busy for you, and then filming the scary-security reaction to this average Midwest guy trying to get in to some cruel establishment bastard.
I mean... it calls Moore "Totally Arrogant" and then less than 30 seconds later, Trace Atkins sings a pandering patriotic song about America.
I didn't see one thing in this trailer that challenges Moore to be better at what he does. And Moore is no perfect being, but this film doesn't attack what's wrong with Moore or his films; it just makes shit up and attacks that-- which reminds me more of O'Reilly's show than Moore's movies. -

Although on the issue of ANWR, you should know there's not enough oil there to power America for even a year. Not to mention the cost and expense of drilling there would INCREASE the average price of gas instead of decreasing it.

I won't say I agree with EVERY SINGLE THING THAT HAS COME OUT OF THE GUY'S MOUTH, but he championed Jessica's Law nationwide and worked to expose judges that would allow child-predators out on the street all to quickly. Is that he is quite possibly going to be the first African-American president ever. That's why he's covered over another aging, wealthy (not rich, wealthy), white politician. If Alan Keyes were the nominee against Joe Biden, he'd be getting just as much coverage as Obama is right now. It's about ratings and money. If this really has the reported 9/11 scene and the Ghost of Christmas Future (or whatever) visually showing the Moore character the "dust of 3000 dead" then if Zucker thinks this film is somehow going to help the Republicans, he's not just old, he's in the first stages of Alzheimer's. We live in a modern world where it is possible for people from Russia to leave it and go to a place they might appreciate and care about. We live in an extremely information rich world where even people in Iraq have the internet. You can be informed about the world faster than you ever could before. The world is a different place now. You now have the ability to find out what the entire world is up to and to decide where your place in the world is. Having an entire population of people that have no pride in their country is not good for anyone. If someone is going to bring up the starving Ethiopians and how they don't have access to information or the ability to leave their country, I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about the modernized people who have access to plenty of food and have the ability to get a job and actually live in a society where they contribute to an economy. The people that live around the world who are too lazy to really do anything but have so many complaints about everything else. Obviously people will take this as some sort of support for Bush, it's not. America and what it stands for was around long before the Bush administration. Bush will be out of office and new people will take his place. It's not the end of the world. You are talking about the Russians and the Italians in a time of a world war and dictatorships. Obviously circumstances change things, I never said you should be a brainless monkey, only that you should have pride in the history of the place you live. Circumstances can change things, but taking pride in your country can also mean fighting to make it better. most humour that is in some way critical (i.e.not observational like seinfeld), is making fun of something by its very nature. Right wing commentary is always, without exception, about exclusion and redistribution of wealth away from the poor. Critical humour is particularly effective when done to subvert those who are in power, and the right wing has alot more power than the left. thus right wing comedy too often comes across as simply picking on the weak, and few people really find bullying funny. that saying, i heard right wing comedy under stalin was a riot.

O'Reilly would be slightly less of an ass if he would avoid any topic where rape is involved. Whether Jennifer Moore or Shawn Hornbeck, he refuses to empathize with (and even blames) the victim. Given his legal history, that mentality is not a surprise. While he's entertaining, what he's doing isn't responsible journalism; it's pandering to people who like their civil liberties but dislike what others do with theirs. I was taught that the United States of America was a melting pot of different cultures and ways of life, and the important lesson was to learn to be tolerant of others and concerned with your own impact on the world. O'Reilly seems to be from an old school-- the old, dirty school where sexual harassment was acceptable and anything that offends your sensibilities is labeled 'un-American'.

This particular brand of political comedy appears to fail because it only attacks the left without attacking the right. The country concert looks to be overwhelmingly jingoistic, and it was probably the only time I laughed during the preview but not for the reasons the filmmakers wanted.
Also, lets do away with the argument "if liberals don't agree with what others have said, then liberals don't like free speech." Free speech refers to speech that is unhindered by the government. Of course, I also loved Airplane and Top Secret. So I like the style of humor.I watched an episode or two of Fox's Half-Hour News Hour . . . that wasn't funny. This looks to me to be the sort of thing that may play well with folks who liked Team America, but if that movie skewered too many sacred cows for you, then you're probably not gonna dig the humor in this.

These kind of spoof/silly movies just don't work anymore. Zucker used to be great at them, with Airplane and Naked Gun. Since then though this genre has shit the bed and descended to the likes of Scary Movie 1, 2, 3, 4 and Superhero Movie. It's sad to see Zucker come out of retirement to join the ranks of the bed shitters. I'd kind of like to see Moore be made fun of but Zucker's idea seems very delayed since Fahrenheit 911 came out like 5 years ago. And Moore's recent film was about the abominable American health care system, which ironically is an issue people on all sides of politics agree needs to be fixed. And it seems even more ironic that Zucker's friend Jim Abrahams has a kid with autism. I guess they're trying to win support for McCain in November. But it just seems like a really weak effort. Moore is annoying but he's not the real enemy; he doesn't make the policies that are fucking this country.

Yes, liberals have famously been labeled as tax-and-spend.
Yes, your taxes will probably go up under Obama.
But I want to share some of my OPINIONS with you, and you can call me crazy if you like.
Obama's income tax rates will shoot up to pre-Bush levels you said. That's undoubtedly true, since Bush II cut taxes, but do you recall there being a skyrocketing debt under Clinton? There was actually a budget surplus. We could afford to lend money to other countries, which continued to carry the confidence in the dollar that the world had felt for decades. Under Bush II, we have not only eliminated all of that surplus, but we have driven up a historical record of debt.
It's true that Bush II has cut taxes. That makes many of us happy, when we receive a $600 check in the mail. But how have we been paying for the EXPANDED government of Bush II (that's right - Bush, a conservative, has actually EXPANDED the govt with the addition of many new depts and the launching of a costly war). Well, we have been BORROWING huge sums of money from other countries - countries like China - who we may in the future have serious problems with given the fact that we are both huge consumers of oil.
All that borrowing (and a lot of offshoring of our manufacturing base) has undermined the value of our dollar.
So McCain will keep tax rates the same. But, how much can a Bush/McCain dollar buy you in today's economy? Do the comparison. It's not "normal" inflation we're looking at for the last 8 years. It's been record-breaking.
Have you noticed that the Pound Sterling and the Euro have taken the place of the dollar as the champions in the world economy? Countries have converted over their reserves from dollars to Euros (further de-valuing our dollar).
I know a lot of "small govt" conservatives are big on the tax issue... it's basically a deal-breaker to some the minute you mention that taxes might go up. But I think the big lie that the Republicans sell people is that they are not big spenders. Look around you. If the election was run on fiscal issues alone, the Republicans would be shot. They've violated the core ethic of Conservatism with totally unsound economic policy. You can think of them as "borrow-and-spend" Conservatives, and someone, at some time is going to have to deal responsibly with the ravages of the last 8 years. And guess what thats gonna mean? Taxes. People have been screaming about Bush's spending all this time - people have been screaming about his tax cuts... Saying you are just passing the bill to future generations. It's true. Red on the ledger is still red. Creditors don't go away.
Also , taxing investments will NOT crash the stock market. Interest and dividends have always been taxed. If an investor has to pay a higher rate, will they suddenly give up and stop all investing? Come on, that's scare tactic bullshit whining from people who just can't see the fundamental point of taxes.
Which brings me to my last point (and sorry for the rambling). People who disagree with taxes think they do not owe anything to the country (ironic, since they often claim to be the biggest patriots). It irks them to their soul to think that their hard-earned cash will support Reagan's "Welfare queen." But people, rich or poor, do owe something. They ought to pay back into the system that provides for roads, schools, elderly care, lending, etc. Conservatives would rather pay their own bills, and let each do the same. But they don't realize that society begins to unravel in that scenario, making it harder and harder for them to make their blessed money. As much as they may hate govt intervention, govt spending, and govt in general, federal regulation of business, taxes, and socialized programs for medicine and good public education make it easier for them to go about getting rich. It keeps the whole nation strong - it doesn't drag the rich onto Skid Row. I noticed your comment that with socialized medicine, we will all have medical care equivalent to some 3rd World country. Do you really think that's true? If you have money, do you think you will ever really suffer in some 3rd world hospital? But, do you know that right now, people ARE getting 3rd world care, and it's happening in US cities? Does that fill you with American pride?
This is not about being a bleeding heart liberal. As I tried to point out, "a rising tide raises all ships." I am no fan of taxes. The biggest expenditure on our national budget right now is the war, though - not welfare, or socialized medicine. And let's not confuse a national medical program with Socialism (it's a favorite of conservatives to brand these ideas as coming from Stalin himself). I don't see Canada or France or Australia as exactly Socialist dictatorships - and they all have nationalized health care that beats the shit out of anything we have here.
I'll cut this short now. Could keep going, but I think i've already taken up more than my share. -

I'm a conservative, I watched his movies, the older one had some moments, but the last two have been pretty bad. I think the best thing you can say about Moore is that he rekindled an interest in documentary filmmaking, and the worst thing you can say about him is that he's a bad documentary filmmaker. I don't understand the right's seething hatred of the man, all that does is expose the fact that he's getting to them. Besides, the things that they complain he's guilty of- agitprop, censorship, creative editing, outright obfuscation, lies and misdirection, are all things these same critics have no problem with when perpetrated against the 'right' targets. Moore's critics aren't morally outraged, per se, as much as they are upset that they themselves are the targets.
As a conservative, I happen to agree with some of what's ended up in Moore's film, I find it irresponsible and dumb to make the guy into some kind of gargantuan threat, he's just a dude with a camera and a left-wing agenda, if you find what he's selling unpalatable, ignore him and move down the line. -

I'd venture to say that some documentary errors are not caught by critics because they simply aren't aware of them, or they give them a pass because the film was "entertaining nonetheless" (let's say), or because they just don't give a flying-fig either way ... they're just film critics, not a Senate investigation!

A lot of your points are misguided; meaning, you shouldn't put it in a Rep/Dem context cause most of that shit is why Bush's poll numbers are so low: he lost the Libertarian and Conservative wings of the party by trying to please everyone. You also fail to properly recognize that record Fed. Gov. revenues have followed tax cuts for decades now (do some research into the Laffer Curve, there's currently a very interesting debate regarding whether or not Obama's proposed tax hikes will or will not lower Fed. government revenue). Furthermore, most of the gov. services you listed are primarily funded by state taxes, not he much higher Fed. taxes. And your appraisal of the economic state seems based on media coverage of "economics" rather than actual economics (for example, the dollar's decline is a good thing for the US, and currency values aren't reflections of their economies respective strengths or weaknesses). Basically, a summary of American economic policy regarding improving lower class real wages and living standards goes like this: you can either punish the rich or help the poor, but you can't do both.

Race is not strictly determined by biology. Racial social realities, such as racism, racial tribalism, racial identity, etc., are social constructs. Obama identifies himself as black, therefore he is a black man. The idea that you can be "half white" or "half" anything is considered absurd. You can be interested in your genetic heritage, you can identify yourself racially, other people no doubt will identify you that way, but this is one of those areas that isn't the sole province of science. I'm from purebred Irish stock. Does that make me ethnic? Well, I'm American first, right? Same thing with Obama, or anyone else you can name. Obama identifies himself as a black man. That should be the final word on that.

glad to have helped. There are plenty of reasons to question Obama's suitability to be the next president. Race is not one of them. I would advise both sides to be vigilant for anyone bringing up race in this context- it's usually a wolf-in-sheep's-clothing tactic for deflecting real discourse in favor of muddying the waters. Both Liberals and Conservatives are equally guilty in this regard. Whether it's the liberal PC police calling Obama's critics 'racist', or it's conservatives complaining that they're unfairly being labeled 'racist' for criticizing Obama, both sides need to shut the fuck up. Unless you're a talking parrot, right-wing stooge like cchhrriissm, who will latch on to anything and everything to deflect real conversation, you should leave race out of it. AS I went on vacation at the end of July, Barack Obama was leading John McCain by three to four percentage points in national polls. When I returned last week he still was. But lo and behold, a whole new plot twist had rolled off the bloviation assembly line in those intervening two weeks: Obama had lost the election!
The poor guy should be winning in a landslide against the despised party of Bush-Cheney, and he’s not. He should be passing the 50 percent mark in polls, and he’s not. He’s been done in by that ad with Britney and Paris and by a new international crisis that allows McCain to again flex his Manchurian Candidate military cred. Let the neocons identify a new battleground for igniting World War III, whether Baghdad or Tehran or Moscow, and McCain gets with the program as if Angela Lansbury has just dealt him the Queen of Hearts.
Obama has also been defeated by racism (again). He can’t connect and “close the deal” with ordinary Americans too doltish to comprehend a multicultural biography that includes what Cokie Roberts of ABC News has damned as the “foreign, exotic place” of Hawaii. As The Economist sums up the received wisdom, “lunch-pail Ohio Democrats” find Obama’s ideas of change “airy-fairy” and are all asking, “Who on earth is this guy?”
It seems almost churlish to look at some actual facts. No presidential candidate was breaking the 50 percent mark in mid-August polls in 2004 or 2000. Obama’s average lead of three to four points is marginally larger than both John Kerry’s and Al Gore’s leads then (each was winning by one point in Gallup surveys). Obama is also ahead of Ronald Reagan in mid-August 1980 (40 percent to Jimmy Carter’s 46). At Pollster.com, which aggregates polls and gauges the electoral count, Obama as of Friday stood at 284 electoral votes, McCain at 169. That means McCain could win all 85 electoral votes in current toss-up states and still lose the election.
Yet surely, we keep hearing, Obama should be running away with the thing. Even Michael Dukakis was beating the first George Bush by 17 percentage points in the summer of 1988. Of course, were Obama ahead by 17 points today, the same prognosticators now fussing over his narrow lead would be predicting that the arrogant and presumptuous Obama was destined to squander that landslide on vacation and tank just like his hapless predecessor.
The truth is we have no idea what will happen in November. But for the sake of argument, let’s posit that one thread of the Obama-is-doomed scenario is right: His lead should be huge in a year when the G.O.P. is in such disrepute that at least eight of the party’s own senatorial incumbents are skipping their own convention, the fail-safe way to avoid being caught near the Larry Craig Memorial Men’s Room at the Twin Cities airport.
So why isn’t Obama romping? The obvious answer - and both the excessively genteel Obama campaign and a too-compliant press bear responsibility for it - is that the public doesn’t know who on earth John McCain is. The most revealing poll this month by far is the Pew Research Center survey finding that 48 percent of Americans feel they’re “hearing too much” about Obama. Pew found that only 26 percent feel that way about McCain, and that nearly 4 in 10 Americans feel they hear too little about him. It’s past time for that pressing educational need to be met.
What is widely known is the skin-deep, out-of-date McCain image. As this fairy tale has it, the hero who survived the Hanoi Hilton has stood up as rebelliously in Washington as he did to his Vietnamese captors. He strenuously opposed the execution of the Iraq war; he slammed the president’s response to Katrina; he fought the “agents of intolerance” of the religious right; he crusaded against the G.O.P. House leader Tom DeLay, the criminal lobbyist Jack Abramoff and their coterie of influence-peddlers.
With the exception of McCain’s imprisonment in Vietnam, every aspect of this profile in courage is inaccurate or defunct.
McCain never called for Donald Rumsfeld to be fired and didn’t start criticizing the war plan until late August 2003, nearly four months after “Mission Accomplished.” By then the growing insurgency was undeniable. On the day Hurricane Katrina hit, McCain laughed it up with the oblivious president at a birthday photo-op in Arizona. McCain didn’t get to New Orleans for another six months and didn’t sharply express public criticism of the Bush response to the calamity until this April, when he traveled to the Gulf Coast in desperate search of election-year pageantry surrounding him with black extras.
McCain long ago embraced the right’s agents of intolerance, even spending months courting the Rev. John Hagee, whose fringe views about Roman Catholics and the Holocaust were known to anyone who can use the Internet. (Once the McCain campaign discovered YouTube, it ditched Hagee.) On Monday McCain is scheduled to appear at an Atlanta fund-raiser being promoted by Ralph Reed, who is not only the former aide de camp to one of the agents of intolerance McCain once vilified (Pat Robertson) but is also the former Abramoff acolyte showcased in McCain’s own Senate investigation of Indian casino lobbying.
Though the McCain campaign announced a new no-lobbyists policy three months after The Washington Post’s February report that lobbyists were “essentially running” the whole operation, the fact remains that McCain’s top officials and fund-raisers have past financial ties to nearly every domestic and foreign flashpoint, from Fannie Mae to Blackwater to Ahmad Chalabi to the government of Georgia. No sooner does McCain flip-flop on oil drilling than a bevy of Hess Oil family members and executives, not to mention a lowly Hess office manager and his wife, each give a maximum $28,500 to the Republican Party.
While reporters at The Post and The New York Times have been vetting McCain, many others give him a free pass. Their default cliché is to present him as the Old Faithful everyone already knows. They routinely salute his “independence,” his “maverick image” and his “renegade reputation” - as the hackneyed script was reiterated by Karl Rove in a Wall Street Journal op-ed column last week. At Talking Points Memo, the essential blog vigilantly pursuing the McCain revelations often ignored elsewhere, Josh Marshall accurately observes that the Republican candidate is “graded on a curve.”
Most Americans still don’t know, as Marshall writes, that on the campaign trail “McCain frequently forgets key elements of policies, gets countries’ names wrong, forgets things he’s said only hours or days before and is frequently just confused.” Most Americans still don’t know it is precisely for this reason that the McCain campaign has now shut down the press’s previously unfettered access to the candidate on the Straight Talk Express.
To appreciate the discrepancy in what we know about McCain and Obama, merely look at the coverage of the potential first ladies. We have heard too much indeed about Michelle Obama’s Princeton thesis, her pay raises at the University of Chicago hospital, her statement about being “proud” of her country and the false rumor of a video of her ranting about “whitey.” But we still haven’t been inside Cindy McCain’s tax returns, all her multiple homes or private plane. The Los Angeles Times reported in June that Hensley & Company, the enormous beer distributorship she controls, “lobbies regulatory agencies on alcohol issues that involve public health and safety,” in opposition to groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The McCain campaign told The Times that Mrs. McCain’s future role in her beer empire won’t be revealed before the election.
Some of those who know McCain best - Republicans - are tougher on him than the press is. Rita Hauser, who was a Bush financial chairwoman in New York in 2000 and served on the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board in the administration’s first term, joined other players in the G.O.P. establishment in forming Republicans for Obama last week. Why? The leadership qualities she admires in Obama - temperament, sustained judgment, the ability to play well with others - are missing in McCain. “He doesn’t listen carefully to people and make reasoned judgments,” Hauser told me. “If John says ‘I’m going with so and so,’ you can’t count on that the next morning,” she complained, adding, “That’s not the man we want for president.”
McCain has even prompted alarms from the right’s own favorite hit man du jour: Jerome Corsi, who Swift-boated John Kerry as co-author of “Unfit to Command” in 2004 and who is trying to do the same to Obama in his newly minted best seller, “The Obama Nation.”
Corsi’s writings have been repeatedly promoted by Sean Hannity on Fox News; Corsi’s publisher, Mary Matalin, has praised her author’s “scholarship.” If Republican warriors like Hannity and Matalin think so highly of Corsi’s research into Obama, then perhaps we should take seriously Corsi’s scholarship about McCain. In recent articles at worldnetdaily.com, Corsi has claimed (among other charges) that the McCain campaign received “strong” financial support from a “group tied to Al Qaeda” and that “McCain’s personal fortune traces back to organized crime in Arizona.”
As everyone says, polls are meaningless in the summers of election years. Especially this year, when there’s one candidate whose real story has yet to be fully told. -

If they spent 8 trillion and made 12 billion, that'd be a new record, but notice the return on investment is pretty shitty. It's actually pretty funny to see that he is lashing out not just at Republicans and I would assume independents but also Democrats that don't measure up to his standards of groupthink. In his world, even Democrats that don't faint at the sight of Obama must have something wrong with them. Just to be clear Pauline, an argument only has merit if it agrees exactly with your preconceived notions?
If I were to cut and paste an article from any number of columnists, what are the chances that you wouldn't immediately dismiss them as a hack, or even better, clearly a stupid evil racist with Alzheimers? And I'll even go see it in the theater. And I hope I find it funnier than Superhero Movie, which was all right. I'm willing to bet good money, just based on the trailer, that I'll find it considerably funnier than Meet the Spartans or Epic Movie, both of which I watched because I have some sort of odd addiction to parody movies even when they don't look that funny to me.
But this looks funny to me. And, generally, overtly political humor like this doesn't look all that funny to me (Half Hour News Hour being one example). But add the parody-movie addicts (most of the box office for most of these parody movies these days), plus the Bill O'Rielly fans that go . . . I think this will perform at the same level as most parody movies, at least domestically. And who knows? Overseas, it might either be seen as a completely ironic movie, or a legitimate Michael Moore documentary, and do bang-up business.Or maybe not. -
And have been voting, for 20 years. This year, I'll be voting against the Democratic party generally, and that's about it. Our candidates suck.

OK, so I did some very brief and superficial research into the Laffer Curve (wikipedia)... Thanks for that reference.
Granted - I am no economist, just an armchair debater.
My issue with the Laffer Curve though, is that it only focuses on taxation as a stimulator/limiter of the economy. And of that,it only focuses on RATE of taxation, when there are additional variables of HOW taxes can be applied (ie, not just income taxes, but estate tax, business tax, etc - things that may apply to some, but not others).
I also find it ridiculous that supply-side proponents would be so religious about such a simple model. I love the quote on wikipedia from Reagan's own budget director, David Stockman:
"[T]he whole California gang had taken [the Laffer curve] literally (and primitively). The way they talked, they seemed to expect that once the supply-side tax cut was in effect, additional revenue would start to fall, manna-like, from the heavens. Since January, I had been explaining that there is no literal Laffer curve."
Or, better, from Nobel prize laureate James Tobin, "[t]he "Laffer Curve" idea that tax cuts would actually increase revenues turned out to deserve the ridicule with which sober economists had greeted it in 1981."
One of the things that gives me instant doubt about this theory is that it seems to have been hatched by some of the same neo-cons responsible for so much of today's damage:

It seems to me like an attempt to legitimize a political point-of-view with pseudo-science.
Even at its most basic I have problems with it. For instance, the idea that at a 100 percent tax rate, the govt gets 100 percent of nothing, because people will essentially refuse to work. It may not be a model of efficiency, but even in Communist states, where the govt essentially HAS a 100 percent tax rate, they get 100 percent of EVERYTHING. Work does not stop. The govt collects the fruits of all labor and decides how to apportion wealth in the form of food, housing, etc, and how to spend their trade dollars. Same with medieval serfdom. I am not suggesting this as a way to the future for us, but merely pointing out that this model assumes 100 percent taxation produces zero gain.
I think we may fundamentally disagree, but I think what the US needs is another New Deal (when taxes on the rich were quite higher than now). Conservatives in the 30s whined then that FDR was a Communist, but that period brought a tremendous redistribution of wealth as well as a tremendous modernization of the country. Surely, if such a radical (by today's standards) program went through, the rich would whine again about tax-oppression (they already do). They talk about how conditions could degenerate here to being 3rd World. As I said, we already have that now - namely in the large separation of wealth between rich and poor. People who are doing the majority of the complaining are not even on the short end of it.
Paul Krugman offered a great insight into the Conservative mind I think when he said that many Conservative economic policies hurt a wide swath of the population and could never become law if put to a popular vote. But many Americans, even lower-income people who could benefit, see govt funded social institutions as benefitting only poor ethnic minorities (Reagan's "welfare queen.") This is why, he theorizes, progressive economic policies do not meet such resistance in racially homogeneous countries like Sweden. Based on the fact that a lot of supply-siders I talk to seem so concerned with what's "mine," and all the people "taking advantage of the system," (which always seem to inspire more anger at the low-end of the economic scale: the welfare mother instead of the corporate baron), I would say Krugman's racial theory is compelling. Certainly, the poor white South would skew more liberal if the racial politics were removed. But again, this is a tactic of the Conservative party, to paint Liberals as bleeding heart extremists who have to take something away from you in order to help the other guy.
Last quick point - you mentioned that devaluation of the currency was good for the US, and not a reflection of the economy's weakness. I wish you could explain that one to me - I don't get it at all. There's an economist by the name of Nouriel Roubini whose ideas are gaining a lot of traction who has done comparison studies of Mexico, Brazil, Russia, Argentina (all countries whose economies collapsed in the last decade) and the US. He's predicted the housing bust, bank collapses, and dollar devaluation and he is making more gloomy predictions. He points to poor govt regulation of the banking industry, and likewise, reckless borrowing and spending from other countries by the federal govt as the leading causes of those other economic disasters. Looks like the Republicans are steering us into an iceberg to me. -

Heres my take on Miller. He was that guy in high school, reasonably intelligent, but hopelessly socially retarded, who found it almost impossible to make friends with the "normals." So he sought out the weird kids and tried to charm them with his esoteric references. It didn't work because he seemed so desperate for acceptance, and his references, though obscure, weren't funny, and lacked the ring of any truth or wit. Anyways, by this point he is a "success," but he's the weakest link on the show, he still doesn't have any real friends, is still awkward, still twitchy, still the kind of guy who laughs at his own jokes not because they're that funny, but because nobody else is laughing. So his stint in SNL ends abruptly, and so, ostensibly, does his career... until he hits the holy grail that Bill O'Reilly, Mann Coulter, Matt Drudge, and every other neocon screaming head has touched on -- BEING A SCREAMING HEAD NEOCON PROPAGANDIST! As a Screaming Head Neocon Propagandist, he now has a built in audience of ignorant religious fanatics who still haven't quite gotten used to seeing black people on television let alone in positions of power. I have been sitting on the sidelines for this TB - but I did want to correct something you wrote about Dennis Miller. I can not speak of his high school life - but I suspect he was more popular than you give him credit for. I do know that he was a stand-up star before hitting it really big on SNL. I actually saw him perform live many years ago. He was very funny. He had a different take on the world, and his comedy was not just non-sequiturs. His schtick worked very well, and exploded on SNL, until it became just that - a schtick, and a prop, and not a jumping off point for his humor. He could never translate it into success on the big screen - and he tried. But he was a staple on the comedy circuit even after his SNL days were over. He was terrible on MNF and never should have been put there in the first place. He has re-invented himself on radio - or perhaps just discovered that being a conservative leaning Hollywood insider, can be turned into big bucks - if played correctly.

A depreciated dollar means foreign goods are more expensive here, and exports are cheaper abroad, which has greatly stimulated our export industries and lead to greater domestic demand for greater products. And China, Japan, S. Korea, Vietnam, etc. aren't buying our debt as a favor, they are export based economies using us as an engine for urbanization. Listen, everything I just said here is so abridged, that it isn't economics, it's opinion. Take it for what you will, but to really get into it I would need my own computer (with all the downloaded papers and the analyses) and several hours to really get into it, and no one wants that.

Military recruiters have been bending rules left and right to get bodies into Iraq.
This is well documented - it's not systematic, but anyone who really wants to get into the military and fits the very basic criteria - can. But some people are just content to sit on the sidelines and fight their war for them. -

Why don't you try a different approach. Since you're never going to get these asswipes to admit they support the war only because someone else is doing all the heavy lifting for them, ask them if at the very least they take time out of their schedule to go down to their local VA for volunteer work and send CARE packages to G.I.'s they've never met, like some of us who oppose the war do. Find out what contributions, if any, they are making for the people overseas they're paying lip service to.

Yes, you should. You know I am a former Marine, so my judgement is clouded. But I think regardless of my service the answer still would be yes. None of those kids want to be in war - none of the rational ones that is. Supporting the troops -like you would any American in time of need, is an honorable and worthy thing regardless your stance on the war. Some of the kids have very little. The money is poor, and many have families to support.

But the reaso nso many troops have so little is because we are pumping billions into this illegal and immoral war. Why should I make it easier for them to take part in it, especially when they supposedly don't want to be in war as you say. Not to sound like a dolt here but it seems to me many Marines are pretty gung ho about war and killing.

First, military pay has always been lousy. There have been stories for years about men and women in the miltary who also have to rely on foodstamps! This was long before Gulf wars. Yes, it is costing many billions of dollars, but this country is in no danger of going under because of the war expense. But those kids still do not have enough money to make ends meet - especially the ones with families. As for gung-ho. I do not know how old you are, but remember when you were a 19,20,21 year old. You were a kid. Immature, and with very little experience in the world. Now, suppose you take that same immature, unexperienced, testosterone full, 19,20,21 year old, put him into a life and death situation. Give him a weapon, and tell him to kill the enemy. Just how do you think he will react? Change the situation. make it the same 19,20,21 year old on a football team. Do you see where I am going? It is bravado, and braggadocio, fueled by a very real sense of mortality and in some case -fear. But you damn sure better not show that. I was very pumped when I 'went to war'. I got very lucky, and grew older. Talk to Xiphos if you want to learn what a mature Marine who is still fighting thinks. That gung ho is a phase that passes. It is very understandable at that age, and in those circumstances. But even then, when you are feeling full of yourself, you do not really want to be in a war - and if you are lucky, you will grow old enough to realize that what you are doing is necessary, and you damn sure better do it to the best of your ability in order to survive, but you no longer revel in it - if you ever really did.

Ok I'll give you that one. Very well-reasoned argument. but I would have to argue with your assertion that this country isn't in danger of going under becasue of war expense. Hell it already is. The dollar isn't worth two squirts of piss and nobody has a fucking job anymore. Our schools and infrastructure are crumbling. Do you know what we could od with that money?

...and I would never judge someone because of their involvement in the military. If they are good people they are good people...but on that same note I also think it is wrong to throw around words like "Hero," so easily. I do not refer to someone as a hero merely because they signed up for the military. If I hear a particularly heroic account of an event...sure they could be heroic...and I could also hear an horrifying event of rape and murder of civilians. I do not judge. I don't throw either title around....villain or hero. I have no idea what your behavior was on the battlefield. My problem is with the people who will call all vets-- American Heroes. You have no idea what their behavior was like out there...they could have been raping and pillaging non stop, yet when they return home, most would ask no questions-- but hail them as heroes. Thats what I have a problem with. There are good and bad in everything.

The idea that all those who support the war should enlist is ridiculous. Where were all you elitists when the liberals were going to Iraq to form human shields along with the innocent civilians who were forced to do so by the terrorists. The terrorists where probably laughing their asses off at these idiots. But just because you weren't brave enough to be stupid doesn't give any more weight to the truth of your argument. In fact, it just reveals the elitist lack of respect for those who join the military. Yes, those who voluntarily join. There is no draft. Ever occur to you that many join because they believe it is their indivicual calling, that they feel that they could be a skilled soldier or contribute to the military strategically over others who perhaps, choose to be teachers or civilian doctors, lawyers, businessmen, etc. You try to paint the military as young and stupid, somehow being taken advantage of, typical cynical view of the universe. Most know what they are doing, are proud of it, and are much better at it than most of us would be. It also contradicts the argument that teachers and nurses, etc. are also heroes...I agree, but what if those same teachers and nurses are posting on this board in support of the war? They aren't soldiers, so somehow they are less right or wrong? I only see this argument being made because the liberals are losing the substance of the argument, because how can you be a liberal and say that a war that freed people from a military dictatorship was morally wrong?
