McLovin To Star In Matthew Vaughn’s Adaptation of Mark Millar’s Ultraviolent Superhero Saga KICK-ASS??

Published at:  Aug 15, 2008 1:26:40 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Christopher Mintz-Plasse ("Superbad") is negotiating to play the villainous Red Mist in "Kick-Ass," based on the spectacular and spectacularly violent comic book series written by Mark Millar ("The Ultimates," "The Authority," "Wanted").

Matthew Vaughn ("Layer Cake," "Stardust") directs from a screenplay he wrote with his "Stardust" co-scripter Jane Goldman.

Already cast is Chloe Moretz ("Dirty Sexy Money"), who plays a sword-brandishing pre-teen vigilante.

The comic tells the tale of a high school nerd (still uncast), devoid of anything resembling a superpower, who puts on a costume and heads into really bad neighborhoods to mete out justice.

    Goldman = shit

    by ecto-1

Well, considering the steaming pile that Vaughn and fucking Jane 'talentless hack' Goldman made of Stardust, I expect more of the same from them on this. How the fuck someone like Goldman can go from making shit a shit TV show like 'Jane Goldman Investigates' (it's about the supernatural) to scripting 100 million budgeted movies...?

    by segundus

Complete and utter bollocks. People forget that Jane has been in media since she was at least 16 years old. She's been married to Jonathan for 20 years.

I have this real problem that people equate a more widely-known partner with that of nepotism. That's the sort of thing that British MPs get up to - not that of well established talent.

And as for "Goldman = shit", it's funny that she's won quite a few awards for her work. The most recent two being film-maker of the year at the Glamour awards and a Hugo for Stardust (Best Dramatic Presentation Long Form).

And as for the 100 million movies - the budget for Stardust was $70 million (£35 million) and I believe Kick-Ass is going to cost around $30 million (£15 million). Where the heck you're getting this 100 million from is beyond me.

And Vaughn has secured half the financing for Stardust and ALL the finance for Kick-Ass - something that's virtually unheard of here in the British film industry. It gives him a creative freedom that most directors can dream about. Not fucking bad for a "hack" which is what you're making them out to be.

    Sheesh..

Has Hollywood run out of Liefeld projects?

    by chewtoy

Millar's writing is routinely empty and drenched in the kind of cynicism that geeks feel somehow makes them cool. Every project of his that gets made by Hollywood will feature major rewrites (See Ultimate Avengers or Wanted) because even the hackiest of Hollywood types realize that there's nothing in them for 95% of the potential audience to latch onto.

Not Hollywood. This is NOT Hollywood.

    by segundus

Since when has Hollywood boarded a plane and relocated to London? The movie is financed by MARV (a British company) and being written and directed by Brits. This is NOT a Hollywood movie.

Or can I add Hollywood to the dictionary as a derogatory term rather than a place?

    by adiehardfanwithalethalweapon

-- but it's typicaly very blah. Which makes the outlandish killings and sudden appearances of other costumed nuts kinda cool. Millar's either a genius or down right lazy.

I don't understand the hatred for WANTED...

    by brokentusk

I fucking loved every minute of it, one of the best times I've had in a cinema this year. Sure, it’s not going to win any awards for originality and intelligence – it's completely unrealistic and somewhat predictable in places – but I knew that would be the case going in. It's also brazenly similar to FIGHT CLUB and THE MATRIX in parts, particularly the “office drone” aspects of the film. Despite all of that, I had a smile on my face throughout – it's just so damn over-the-top and fun! These types of films (which don’t aspire to be anything beyond mindless entertainment) always divide audiences, but I’m surprised that so many people absolutely detest it. If your argument is that you’re a fan of the source material and they completely changed it (in a negative way), that’s fine. However, I don’t agree with the people who bash it simply because it’s “dumb” – not every film has to have a deep message, a firm basis in reality, or even the most intelligent of plots in order to be entertaining on some level. No, I think the makers of WANTED achieved exactly what they set out to achieve, and I’ll definitely be watching it again on DVD. I mean come on, it has Angelina Jolie’s naked ass for at least half a second of screen time! It’s gold baby, gold!

    NOTHING IS SACRED

    by samblackchvrch21

You know, it was almost a blessing that for the longest time Watchmen seemed just completely unfilmable. It was like the 1 comic book that fans could take solace in knowing it wouldn't get overblown to the masses. The Graphic Novel has sold 900,000 since the trailer debut. In comparsion, it sold 100,000 total last year alone. I am not opposed to seeign the Watchmen flick because it looks phenominal. But Kick-Ass is 4 issues deep in a 6 issue series. This property doesn't belong on the screen. At least not yet. And God help us if they hack the original story to bits ala the film adaption of WANTED.

The film was unwatchable. I downloaded a copy last week and couldn't make it through the first 20 min. I fast-forwarded through a bit more of it and just gave up...just incredibly, incredibly stupid and worthless.
