Moriarty’s BUZZKILL! Who Is (NOT) Playing Freddy Krueger? And BATMAN 3 Again... Already!
Hey, everyone. “Moriarty” here.
I didn’t say rumors are bad as an absolute.
Of course they’re not. Discussion of rumors is a big part of being a movie fan. Has been as long as I’ve been a movie fan. And I would never, under any circumstance, say “never ever listen to a rumor.” That’s just silly, and if that’s what it sounded like I was saying in the last “Buzzkill,” then I’m sorry.
Rumors are fun. Rumors inspire people to think imagine what might be down the road for us as movie fans. But when something that’s just not true is getting reported as “fact” everywhere, it can’t hurt to add some perspective to that. I’ve actually heard fans get angry talking about a film because some rumor from before it came out turned out not to be true, and that strikes me as a little crazy. That’s why I’d rather try to offer up a counterpoint to some of these rumors sometimes, instead of just letting them get set in stone.
A good example would be this story about Billy Bob Thornton signing on to play Freddy for the new remake of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.
Thing is... it’s not true.
If you go into any talkback for the last two days, there are dozens of people who have been printing and reprinting that rumor as “fact,” and they’ve been e-mailing us repeatedly as well. The story’s been printed all over the place, and as best as I can source it, everything leads back to some off-hand comment from Robert Englund about how Thornton would be good in the role. But let’s say it was more definite than that. Let’s say Englund specifically said, “Thornton has been signed for the role and absolutely will play it.” He’s still not the producer of the movie. Right now, the studio’s taking a shot at a script draft. Fuller and Form, the most likely producers for the remake, have been campaigning pretty hard to get the gig in the geek press over the last month or so while discussing their upcoming FRIDAY THE 13th reboot.
Here’s what I think is more likely. Englund likes the notion of Thornton in the role. I know how fond people are of Englund and his work in the whole series, and I’m sure if they announced Englund was coming back again, fans would be fine with that. I think he developed some really bad habits playing it that many times, and I think by the last thirty-seven films or so, Freddy’s been almost fully defanged. He was a stand-up comic with bad skin, not a genuine monster anymore. But it’s Englund’s role. He’s the one person who has played it, and it’s not like Jason or Michael, which are non-verbal performances. Freddy is all about personality. So if they are going to cast a new actor, I’m sure it will make it easier for Englund to be replaced if it’s an actor as acclaimed as Thornton.
In all honestly, I’ve heard that if Fuller and Form are indeed named to produce the film (the earliest point the film would start casting), they’re thinking much, much younger in terms of casting. After all, how many sequels have they made in the series so far? Would you rather start the new series with a 60 year old lead or a 30 year old one? One of the names that keeps coming up when people speculate on casting is Ben Foster, and I’d be willing to bet that’s more in line with the name you’ll actually see signed for the film. For now, I’d guess the Thornton thing has a very, very, very slim likelihood of being true at best.
Same thing with that beautiful BATMAN 3 poster that Alex Billington posted over at FirstShowing.net today.
It’s gorgeous, but again... no one’s started any serious development on the next BATMAN film yet. And there are no firm choices made yet on villains. I know several of you mentioned in the last talkback that Nolan and Goyer originally discussed a trilogy before they wrote BEGINS, and that’s true. There were some rough ideas for the shape of things, but nothing’s set in stone, and even in that original idea, they weren’t married to anything. I like the idea of the Riddler in the third film, and I really like the notion this poster sells of the Riddler as Zodiac. It’s great work, and it’s this kind of speculation that can be a lot of fun while you’re waiting for a film to get released. Just don’t confuse fan enthusiasm and speculation with actual fact. Billington just ran the thing this morning because he enjoyed the look of it so much. I totally get it, and I’m glad he did. It’s cool.
There are other people sending us links to it as “news,” though, and it’s really not. It’s just a fun thing to add to the pile of “wow, wouldn’t this be fun?” as we wait for real news to kick in next year.

If not Thornton, who is 53 after all (Englund is 61) and not Ben Foster, who would be great but has never opened a film before, then what about JOSH LUCAS?
-
... they don't care if the new Freddy ever opened a film before. How many of these horror remakes depend on name talent? Really? Who's the giant name in FRIDAY? It's the franchise itself that is the "star" they'll sell.
-
I don't know if that means having a Nolan version of Batman Forever with Riddler and Two Face. I've also heard working in a Dark Knight Returns adaptation. I think I'd be alright with either.
-
...but then, I've never been big into the Nightmare series.
I really like that fan art poster. I hadn't been able to think of an effective way to use the Riddler that makes sense, but the Zodiac thing definitely works. Especially if they good a good actor, and make sure to differentiate his mad plans from Joker's. Though, I think "Hunt the Dark Knight" is a more apt title than The Dark Knight Returns. It's a chapter title from DKR, and it doesn't prevent DC animation from releasing an animated version of DKR. Or, some original title. -
...right next to my Batman Begins poster and my two Dark Knight posters. But I don't have any room. And I'm moving soon. FUCK.
But seriously. Props to whoever made that for getting me super fucking excited about a movie that doesn't exist. -
It's sweet. Batman 4 should be black mask and scar face... That would be a weird Batman movie.
-
I can't believe we have to wait 3-4 years for another Bat.

I think it will never happen, if only because how many 'A' list actors do you see headline a horror franchise reboot. Mori's right in that the star is the franchise, and you don't need a name. I disagree though that they wouldn't use Thornton because he's too old and they would want him to do lots of sequels. If the producers could get him, they'd use him in a heartbeat. He'd just never sign.

~~~"HUNT THE DARK KNIGHT" is a better title...~~~
by the marquis de side 3
"THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS" title is too close to Frank Miller and could mislead the audience into thinking it's a direct adaptation of the book That story alone really should be directed by him one day -- it's just so over the top and deserves to have its own style retained for film, much like "300" or "SIN CITY". But that doesn't mean that the individual titles of each chapter are off limits, much like concepts (bat swarm over cops) or characters (Flass) were game, then used for "BATMAN BEGINS".
I think the series should go this way: regard "BATMAN BEGINS" as a prequel, then start a full three film trilogy, with "THE DARK KNIGHT" as the first part; the Riddler and Catwoman against Batman, while maybe introducing Gordon's affair with Sarah from "YEAR ONE" in a second film called "HUNT THE DARK KNIGHT"; and then top it all off in the third film and bring things full circle, use Talia Al-Ghul to avenge her father's death and some other unused characters (Croc? Deadshot? Penguin?) and end the film in the far east in "THE DARK KNIGHT TRIUMPHANT". Now that would be sweet! Call it Chris Nolan's "DARK KNIGHT" series to set it apart from the 90s films.
Try to top off THAT prequel+trilogy set Guillermo del Toro! =0P -
i really dont want a Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, BaneFreezeIvy movie.
That poster make Riddler look like a scary nutjob, like Ledger's Joker. The Riddler shouldnt be a carbon copy of the Joker. Carrey's Riddler was too silly and he riffed on the lunacy of Nicholson's Joker. -
that should be the name of the next flick
-
I agree with the titles (see my above post), and the idea of 4 total films, but I don't think Catwoman is a good idea. I think Riddler can carry a movie by himself. My actual preference, though, is Bane. I know Bane is looked upon as the Batman equivalent of Doomsday, but he's actually very interesting. A straight adaptation of KnightFall could work, at least so far as him freeing the entirety of Arkham to wear Batman down. He's the total anti-Batman, and an actual physical threat. I think he would be good for Hunt, along with Riddler (though not necessarily, or even preferably not working together), and Triumphant would have Joker returning. Just my thoughts.
-
Penguin. Riddler would be cool too, I would think Adrien Brody could fit well in to that roll.
-
That poster got me thinking: what if Nolan and Goyer really intended to make The Dark Knight Returns for the third film? Not adapt Miller's book, but use it as the basis for the next film -- maybe Batman battling a Mutant-esque street gang, maybe a few years after The Dark Knight? If not a few years later, then I'd imagine ripples of the Joker's rampage would still be felt -- maybe a gang of Joker wannabes, as a story element anyway...
After Heath's Joker, Grendel is the only suitable villain for Ba
by librerarian
You know it in your heart to be true. Heath's Joker painfully upped the ante, to the extent that Eckhart's Two-Face, as cool as he was, would just be a lame follow up. And as much as I like the Riddler as a character, even the most lethal and psychotic incarnation of that character isn't going to stack up against Heath's Joker... and after Dark Knight, we don't need another nihilistic psycho, or another brainy lunatic blowing things up. Ledger took that as far as it would go. Now Batman needs a villain more like him... someone who isn't insane. Someone who is an intelligent, calculating, and remorseless criminal who can rationally match Batman on his own terms. I thought about Bane, but he's a gimmick character... he wouldn't fit in Nolan's universe. Grendel would fit perfectly. Think about it. Even if he isn't a traditional Bat character, he's the only character scarier than the Joker and who could pose an even greater challenge. Get Matt Wagner to help with the script, and incorporate elements from his Batman/Grendel comics... it would be the perfect sequel.
-
I kinda hope its the Penguin with either the Riddler, Mr. Freeze. It would be so easy to have a realistic big crime penguin move in after the bosses are all done in by the joker. Riddler himself is too close to the Joker ("wild" villain) but could work, I'd like Mr. Freeze as the Penguins man. He could be a strong guy with a cold suit and could turn things cold by grabbing them (forget the freeze ray). I'd also go along with a Catwoman. Anyone but King Tut.
-
it's amazing
-
now THAT would be sweet! it could even be a cheeky comment on how everyone is arguing on whether or not the Joker should be recast in the third film, if used at all. just have a buch of Joker copycats running around fighting the Batman copycats...that's pretty awesome.
-
The Mutant Leader played by Kimbo Slice. Selleck as Commisioner Gordon. Ellen Page as Robin. Rick Moranis as the Mayor.
-
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0429363/
-
hmmm...maybe that shold be saved for when they introduce Robin... wasn't the term Caped Crusader used in the 40s when they introduced Robin and brightened up Batman's image?
-
I think Grendel might work, but there's no recognition. Even in Batman Begins, Ra's was a well-known-among-fans character. I don't think Bane HAS to be a gimmick character. He's essentially Batman on literal steroids. The costume has to go, except for the last fight, but it could work. And unionJACKass, I figure you're being facetious, but I actually think Javier Bardem would be good. A giant Hispanic who can act, which is exactly what Bane needs.
I'm pretty sure
yeah I've heard so many people say that Johnny Depp was going to be the Riddler. The first time I heard it, I knew it was bullshit without even googling any "news"...it takes all kinds, even the idiots.
-
Deadshot is a great idea. I love him as a villain and now that Batman's on the run, it makes sense that a top flight assassin would want in on the hunt.And I agree with everyone that has said Riddler shouldn't be a psychopath like Joker. He needs to be the opposite. He needs to be cerebral and utterly calculating -- a man WITH a plan. Also it would be great to see Batman be a detective for an entire movie. Riddler and Deadshot would make a nice balance I think. Two men going after Batman in completely different ways. But I'm also an idiot so I don't know.And Talia would be great addition as well. She would elevate the hotness now that Two-Face is dead.
-
...Amy Winehouse in both roles (zing!)
-
and I'm not fucking kidding. an androgynous character would fit the universe, bring a HUGE amount of attention to an already hyped 3rd film. endless support from the LGBT community, lots of interesting plot twist opportunities.if not in a comic book movie, then where?!?
-
While I assume they want a younger freddy for a possible new franchise, i like the idea of an older Freddy. a 60 year old pedophilic high school janitor is creepier than some thirtyyear old actor who just walked off the cover of GQ.
-
Or are we all still riding this wave?
-
just would be too much, you know?plus, in Nolan's universe, it'd need to be someone younger....more disenfranchised...Zooey Deschanel?
-
... didn't see that request last time.
I ran it because I thought it was true. I got hoaxed, and I got hoaxed well. A guy sent me a link to an "under construction" site that was part of the Starwars.com domain. It wasn't, rather, but it sure looked like it to me. I'm a bit of a Luddite, so I can be tricked, no doubt. The page showed the cast list for the film, the official announcement, including Walken as Bane.
Of course it was 100% untrue, but at the time, I sure thought it was right. -
How f'ed up can things go in real life screw up continuity in a series?
-
...which was only the 2nd to last sequel. It all depends on how the material is handled. He's been funny when needed, and scary as shit when called for. But they've already all but confirmed it'll be someone else. It's gunna be a tough sell seeing someone else in that role, but other icons like Dracula and James Bond have endured. Although the originals are still the most famous I would say.
-
True, the franchises themselves are the stars. It doesn't matter who plays the villains, they'll open at the top of the box office because of the dependability of the horror community. What I'm saying is that New Line, back in 1984, didn't know what it had on its hands then. And you're right, Jason and Michael are non-verbal and Freddy is about personality. Which is why this is the only real opportunity to take horror into the mainstream. I'm not saying Josh Lucas or Foster or even Billy Bob are guys who open movies at 30 million a clip, but I'm saying you could get a star who could catapult the franchise into a whole new level. Foster would be perfect for Freddy and he's a great young actor, but if they got some real star power, this thing could go from anticipated horror film to blockbuster or even tentpole status. why not? this is a golden opportunity to reboot everything and put the franchise in capable hands. englund was great and i'll miss him but its time for some new blood, no? im ranting, fuck me...
-
I am going out on a limb, but my guess is that the next Batman villian will be either Hush or Deadshot. Both would fit in with Nolan's realistic, dark Batman universe better than more popular villians such as the Penguin or Riddler.
-
Deadshot was in Batman: Gotham Nights. Was it intentional forshadowing?
Rumors that are labeled as such are not an issue. This column is about rumors that have somehow started being reported as set-in-stone fact.
-
...if only we can hook him up with some Oxycontin and an Olsen twin it will be a huge summer blockbuster
-
Deadshot was my favorite short in Gotham Knight. Nolan could make him fit easily. How would you go about introducing Hush? Would you give him the same backstory? It might be kind of jarring to the average moviegoer for Bruce Wayne to lose his closest childhood friend (in this universe) in Rachel and then give him another one in Hush. I don't know, what would you do?
-
They would obviously have to alter the Hush story quite a bit. They would have to introduce a ton of villians (many with no real grounds in reality like Killer Croc) and two Robins killing the second one to actually get the story to match the graphic novel. I just think the character of Hush himself is more grounded in realism and has the long back history with Bruce Wayne to work in a Nolan movie. Granted, by altering the storyline so much, it could alienate the fans of the graphic novel.
I guess if they were going to introduce Hush, Nolan would have to focus on Tommy's and Bruce's relationship and Tommy's vendetta against Bruce/Batman and change the alter a lot of the plot points. Granted neither of the first two movies followed any particular storyline for Scarecrow, Ra's al Ghul, Joker, or Two Face either. So I guess it wouldn't be a stretch. -
I do agree that Deadshot was probably the best storyline of Batman: Gotham Knight.
-
Is that story actually true?!
-
...I also heard talk of Phillip Seymore Hoffman or Paul Giamatti as The Penguin - working as some sort of arms dealer...thought that was interesting...Johnny Depp as The Riddler...that was swirling around somewhere...and I'd Love to see Jessica Biel in that Catwoman costume but then again, that's one of my own sick little fantasies.
Is if Batman encounters him in Arkham and is first sprayed with Scarecrow's fear toxin, thus distorting his face. I'm sure they could cobble together some Ledger sound bites for dialogue.
I'm sketical we'll even see a Nolan Batman 3, as he's expressed time and again that he pretty much shot his wad on Dark Knight. It's pretty much inevitable there will be a sequel, but would you go see a Nolan-less Batman? -
Sold. Totally sold now on that idea for this universe. Just not sold on Jolie rumour as Catwoman. There needs to be Catwoman though.
-
I was just discussing the Riddler as the next villian. Fanmade or not, that poster is amazing, more to the truth of what a real Riddler would be like. Plus, am I the only one who hopes Talia will make an appearance soon? She is one of the few characters who has never been seen in a Batman film, and she would be perfect to play on the hole left in Bruce by Rachel.
-
as the inspiration in the last Buzzkill talkback, check it out, believe me, I did. Using the example of HEAT being the "inspiration" of TDK along with my suggestion of Eccelston as the Riddler. I know I'm not the only one to come up with that idea, but wowthe Poster is cool but a little too close to the scratchy "why so serious" stuffas for titles, I don't like The Caped Crusader, it's too light, it needs to invoke the same feeligns that BB and TDK did, the only thing that comes to mind is simply calling it GOTHAMpersonally I wouldn't even introduce Batman or Bruce until 30, 45 min. even an hour into the filmstart it off with a faux Joker (nice suggestiona dna good homage to Batman Beyond fighting a faux Batman, police break it up repoter swarm the scene, slowly build up to this cold, calucating, greedy smart as hell classy criminal with a penchant for green (no question marks, no tattoos-green suit, green bowler hat, MAYBE a question mark tie pin)planning a robbery, Riddler is the man in the shadows, the puppet master, whereas Joker was going for the...recogniation, Mr. Nygma is in it for the money, laundering the money through a club of some sort run by a portly little mobster (don't call either one The Riddler [unless it's by the media i.e. BTK, Zodiac, etc]) or Penjuin, just use slight ways to INVOKE their images
-
I feel like I've already seen that storyline played out to death before one frame is shot.
-
Yes, Hush's story would have to change but I think even his backstory would have to be a little different. Present day Gotham is far too interesting to bog down with flashbacks. Elliot would have to be a bitter long time business rival with a similar personal story alluded to in conversation but not flashbacks.But, yes, Hush would be a cool movie villain. If Coleman Reese wasn't such a pussy maybe he'd be man enough to take Bruce Wayne on personally like Hush does in the comics. but of course he is a pussy so he's not doing anything.
-
here: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a19/kidchino05/Gotham_Knights_by_CrimsonPhantasm.jpg
-
... ala Dark Knight Returns. Put it 20 years in the future and have Supes as the bad guy. Just ignore everything from the 2nd Dark Knight comic. The scene in the comic where you just see a black silhouette with only the "S" visible would be cool to see on the big screen.
-
....as the next villan. Jim Carrey did his thing but since we're revamping it all why not let someone do it more realistic a la Joker in TDK. He (she?) could be a very disturbing protaganist.
-
The "Ben Foster as Freddy" thing was started RIGHT HERE by our colleague Quint. It was in the first story warning the world that those fuckers intend to remake NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, and I believe he said that his friend wanted Ben Foster to play Freddy (or maybe it was his own idea, I can't remember for sure). For some reason everybody started repeating it and now it got returned to Moriarty as a casting rumor instead of Quint wishing upon a star.
-
from his own faked death set up by Gordon and Bats (No one Ever Really Dies, remember?^^) and add a spot-on Catwoman to lighten up the tone a bit and make up for the lack of female lead. Dent being treated in Arkham, seemingly recovering and then flipping up and threatening Batman's redemption by putting the Catwoman/Bats relationship in jeopardy: that would be a good canvas to develop things upon.
But please, no Riddler. The Joker in TDK pretty much nailed the "battle of wits" thing; if Nygma stepped up it would feel like a retread. Unless they go full Die Hard 3 and make it some kind of Gotham-based explosive scavenger hunt with clever riddles, they couldn't find lamer riddles than in Batman Forever anyways. -
Deadshot especially since Batman is so anti-gun and anti-killing and Deadshot is all about that. Good baddie suggestion.
-
And by no Riddler, I specifically (but not exclusively) mean
by spencertrilby
NO JOHNNY DEPP AS NYGMA. After the terrible job Carrey did in '95, I wouldn't want to sit through two and a half hours of cheap Jack Sparrow retread. Downey's Stark was painful enough, I don't need Depp-inspired wacky rendition of comics characters no more.
-
... I said "speculate" regarding Ben Foster. I know full well Quint said that. I have heard several other people say it as well. I did not say that's who they're using... but I guarantee whoever they cast will be closer to Foster's age than Thornton's.
-
I don't neccassarily think the Riddler should be a criminal but he should have that pyschological bent that makes him send these clues out, like The Zodiac, BTK, etc, really exploring the obession that drives Batman through his most well obessed foe. I think exploring that obession is the next logical step in what Nolan's been doing
-
not necessarily a great idea for him to do this, even were he to be offered it...
-
I posted this in the clone wars rant thread asking "what the fuck?"
I am so, so glad it's bollocks.
If it isn't Wes Craven & Robert Englund, then it shouldn't be done.
Took your time debunking it though, eh?
would be a breat title for the next flick. focusing his redemption in the eyes of gotham. nice. as for freddy. i think an unkown might be the way to go. start fresh, no baggage. and be scary for godsake. NO CGI Freddy please.
-
Better title
-
Perfect title to cap off the trilogy and someone just beat me to it!
-
Which is why I'm glad these rumors are obvious BS. Thankfully, Nolan doesn't usually go for the boring choices. If Catwoman does show up in #3, he'll hopefully go for someone who's never played a role quite like this one before, while having shown traits in previous roles that suggest they could pull it off. I like NOT knowing what to expect from the performances in these movies. Which is why casting Jolie would be so utterly boring - we've already seen her play incarnations of this character several times before.
-
Even though they are also obviously BS, he wouldn't be a bad choice. Mainly just because I'd love to see him work with Christopher Nolan on ANY movie.
-
Not really good for Catwoman, but perfect for Poison Ivy.
-
Seriously, I've been catching up on some French movies lately, and I really think she'd be perfect. She has the look, is the right age, and she's an AMAZING actress. Plus she's got the type of acting/awards pedigree that Nolan seems to go for.And on a side note - she's supposedly doing a mid-western American accent for Public Enemies, which made me think a dual-accented Catwoman/Selina Kyle would be awesome, and help with the suspension of disbelief with Bruce not recognizing her voice.
-
why not? something tells me there was more to that character and his glare exchange with bruce wayne. (after wayne saves him from gothams only inbred truck driving hick)
-
... and they do keep calling him "Mr. Reese" repeatedly. As in "mysteries." Hmmmmmmmm...
-
There is an old script (pre-Nolan) for Batman that always sounded interesting to me involving Man-Bat, the only thing I remember hearing about it was Man-Bat taking nightly hunts on Gotham citizens, and all the Gothamites resultingly thinking it was Batman having gone blood thirsty and commiting those murders. Man-bat is probably too far out there for the Nolan-verse, but its just an idea that struck me as fitting well with the ending of TDK.
-
..the more love it. i hope nolan comes back. that would be the best way to end the trilogy. bats on the run and his villain knows his identity, so he just toys with him.
-
is that he's an idiot. If the real Riddler had a hunch his boss was the Batman he wouldn't play his hand so foolishly. If Riddler is the next villain he better be a lot more tactical than that.As for the "mysteries" references I totally didn't catch on to that, so good catch! Maybe the viral marketing didn't end when the movie opened.
-
Like Deathshot or something. Would mix well with Catwoman, and maybe Harley Quinn. Or even a mobster pinguin.
-
but humiliation leads people to do fucked up things...plus they made a point of how intelligent he is with numbers. the riddler is a maniacal attention whore, and reese went straight to the news after the blackmail wasnt successful. maybe following his new "edgy" persona batman/wayne will get reese thrown into arkham because he wont shut up..then escape..then havoc ensues.
-
...Theres something so right about that. I hope the doofi behind the Friday remake get booted before they get a chance to frat boy this new franchise. Freddy has some really rich thematic material to work with.
-
The idea of Reese still actively going after Bruce Wayne is a really good one and I hope they explore that thread somehow but I just don't see a guy changing that fast. Especially since he messed up twice -- one, when he went to Fox and two, when he went on TV. His first instinct was profit. If Riddler knew who Batman was, I don't think he'd want anyone else to know that HE knew who Batman was, he'd want to string Bruce along some elaborate game.One thing you could do, since everyone knows Reese knows something, is have Riddler kidnap Reese and have him spill as much as he knows. Then you'd have "Enigma" and his little stooge "Mysteries". And also that way, we'd know that Riddler knew who Batman is but we wouldn't know who Riddler is.It's 2:37 in the A.M. and I hope that makes sense.
-
and Reese knows who he is or at least knows something, somebody kidnapping him has to be the only logical place to start, yes?
-
... so I'm taking two of these recent rumors and combining them and starting my own new rumor right now right here that is 100% false, and let's see if you guys can get it on CNN by next week.
Let's take Johnny Depp as The Riddler...
... and add it to Billy Bob as Freddy...
... so we get the following story, ready to be redistributed immediately:
Johnny Depp has been tapped to play Freddy Krueger in the upcoming NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake. Depp, of course, made one of his first film appearances in the original NIGHTMARE in 1984, and actually approached the studio about being in the movie and playing the iconic villain. Studio bosses, upon hearing Depp's interest, were reported to have said, "Fuck me, Jack, it's Christmas." -
*SPOILER ALERT*
That at the end of TDK, when Batman and Gordon were standing over Two Face's body, that his chest was CG'd? I wasn't too sure the first time i saw the movie, but the second time i was watching out for it. The only reason i can think of was to take out Two Face breathing, to make it appear that he was dead. And, i may be wrong on this- my memory is a bit foggy, i'm pretty sure at no point do they ever say that two face is actually dead, just that Harvey is...
Two face for the sequel? They did spend a long time setting his whole character up, just for it to end there........... -
...and damn you Duke-of-New-York for beating me to posting it. Using 'The Dark Knight Returns' could cause a massive backlash from fans of Miller's book when the film turned out to be completely different, and 'Hunt The Dark Knight' fits much better with the theme of the film (as set up by the end of TFK) anyway. Also it would still be a nice nod to the comic. In fact at the end of TDK all I could think of was that chapter from DKR, and I loved that it seemed to have been inspired by it.
-
If they wanted Two-face for the sequel, why would they go in in post and *alter* the film to *make him dead*?
See how fun this site can be when you don't take yourself so seriously? Thanks for a cool article.
If rumors were bad, this site would barely exist. Come on, now.
I know this might fall along the lines of "just throw someone whos been in another comic book/action movie into the role" like jolie but what about rosario dawson as catwoman? She was catlike in rent and then there's what she did in sin city
-
Where does it say on this poster that the letter writer is the Riddler? Everyone here is talking like they know for a fact that's who the writer is. Does it indicate as such or is that just the popular sentiment? It makes sense but could it be referring to someone else?
-
Whoops! Must be the way i typed it- I think it came across the wrong way. What i meant was that there's a (very thin admittedly) possibility that the intention to have 2 face in the sequel. I'm guessing that originally Harvey/ 2 face was breathing on the ground when they shot it and that it was noticeable in the final shot. That's why they CG'd his chest, to get rid of the breathing at least, which does leave open the possiblity that it would be more of a surprise if he were included in the sequel.
Hmm, in hindsight the more i skate on this subject, the thinner the ice is getting. I'll think i'll go and make myself a nice big mug of "shut the fuck up" -
On the man's left hand it's tattooed 'Riddle' and I'm assuming the second 'r' is in the shadow. Or it could just be 'riddle'. Either way.
-
is another reason to assume it be the riddler.
-
Would be awesome. They could approach it like Spacey in Seven or even Fincher's Zodiac.
Also that poster kicks ass.
from a marketing stand point can you imagine?? there would be "?" everywhere. Very simple but awesome. -
I think that Nolan will come back to finish the story and I think he already has it all plotted out. If you think back to events that happened in TDK, you will remember that (SPOILERS) Rachel said when she and Dent were tied up in the wharehouses, something like "he said that one of us would die and that our friends were going to decide." Who did she mean by, "he"? Couldn't have been the Joker -- he was in custody. And it wouldn't have been any of the mob guys -- the Joker didn't trust any of them enough. Also, the Joker being caught and then breaking out of the police station involved an intricate plan, yet the Joker later explained to Dent that he never devises plans, that he just "does things," and that he believes in chaos (or something like that). I think that the Joker was working closely with someone else the whole time, and that Batman will uncover that in the next movie. Maybe an arms dealer (Penguin?) who knows how to wire a building with explosives and turn a person's abdominal cavity into an bomb with a cell phone detonator. And although I don't think that anyone could match Heath Ledger's performance, I think that someone else could reprise the role of the Joker. The clown makeup hides his features enough that someone else could play the role and not look overtly different.
Why must we have The Riddler re-hashed in the third 'Batman' movie? He seems so NOT exciting. “He’s brought in to discover the identity of the Batman but has purposes of his own”…(yawn) Big deal! BB was fine with Ra's and Scarecrow, two 'new' screen villains. As for The Joker…you can’t have a Batman without Joker, the two go together like Peanut Butter and Chocolate. However, The Riddler is de-facto lame as far as I’m concerned. Talk about uninspired. I’m hoping for at least one lesser known villain and perhaps someone truly new. Nolan has proven his abilities with Batman and I think he’s quite capable of creating a new villain upon which to end this trilogy in a memorable and satisfying way.
This rumor probably originated with Thorton's publicist. They do this all the time - if you want your client up for a role you leak a story claiming they already have it. When the ensuing parades and statues are erected, the studio sort of has its hands tied.
Thorton should have gone on Oprah dressed as Freddie Kreuger instead. Isn't that right, Ms. Young? -
Really. No, really.
I actually think he'd be better suited as "The Griddler." Pancakes, eggs, is there anything it CAN'T do? -
Why would you beleive what the Joker said? He doesn't plan because he said he doesn't? How do you explain anything he did from the very opening scene through to the very end? He had three different stories for how he got his scars, why would you take his word for anything? Reminds me of people who list "facts" about Lost based on things Ben has said. Consider the source before you start using their words as facts.
by kongmonkey
"I'm counting on it." This film was full of such allusions. Batman survived the same fall, so could Dent. Though they weren't clear either way whether or not Dent actually died. They alluded to it with a brief glimpse of a memorial service, but since both bats and Gordon are already agreeing to lie about Dents murder spree, whose to say they ain't lying about Dents death. The end of DK was so fucking open and somewhat rushed in a way to close up the remaining story that a sequel to it could go anywhere. Reese is still alive, where that goes is open. And Two-face still has plenty to offer for the series. Hell some rogue cops could hire Deadshot to hunt the fugitive bat for all we know. Fox made a reference to Batmans new suit when Wayne asked if it could protect against dogs. "Protect you against cats." Another allusion to another possibility. Shit its like Spider-man, Doctor Connors spends two movies as a background character when everyone knows where he eventually ends up. But after three films it hasn't happened. We can speculate all we want, like the guy says, nothing set in stone yet. Thats part of the fun though.
Clayface, Bat-Mite or Batzarro for the next Batman.
No colossal plot holes! GASP! No dozens of interesting but ultimately undeveloped subplots! GASP GASP! No half-assed, unmotivated fundamental character changes in the third act! GASP GASP GASP!
As per previous post of mine, personally I'd love to see a character like Black Mask in a third film. Simply because he's never been used before and he's as diametrically different from The Joker as Joker was from Ra's; like someone said, the film has to be about the next major event in Batman's life and the thematics ought to remain as grand as the previous films. Catwoman in Nolan's Gotham would be an interesting thing to see though I wonder if we'd be more like to get Talia Al Ghul? And perhaps also the return of The League Of Shadows? Whatever may happen, I hope Warners and Co simply take their time and get it right. And give Nolan anything he wants to come back.
Faster Moriarty! Buzzkill! Buzzkill!
-
I'd love for something like that to be the new teaser poster.
Of course Nolan will take a year off before even planning this movie (similar to what he did with Batman Begins, actually I think he took 2 years off for that one).
And then will end the best superhero trilogy evaah! -
Killer Croc or Man-Bat for a minor villian?
-
someone suggested Man-Bat already.
It could be made to fit within the overall theme of the series so far. In the first movie, he makes a pact of sorts with the devil (Ra's al Ghul = Demon's head) and becomes Batman. In the second he confronts the nihilistic essence of evil which basically negates all his attempts to restore order. Like Neo in the Matrix series, he is directly responsible for the incremental chaos that threatens to bring down the city he has sworn to defend. In the third, he could resolve the essential paradox of his attempts to do good. The Riddler could be a great way of representing this dilemma; he could embody that force, while forcing Batman to rely more on his wit and instincts than on his strength and image (which is already becoming a liability anyways).
The way the story is developing, it is obvious that at one point Batman will have to die, if only the image. However, instead of pinning his hopes on somebody like Harvey Dent, he may now have to train his successor: Robin. If the movie plays several years after the events in the Dark Knight, Gordon's son could possibly play the role of Robin (and maybe, when he himself is older, and the need once again arises, could in turn take up the Batman identity). Regardless of previous incarnations of Robin, having the son of Gordon choose to ‘fight the forces of evil’ makes sense, since he could embody the strengths and limitations of both Gordon and Batman just as Bruce embodied those of his parents. The fact that he need not rely on the dark image of a bat could represent this necessary change of direction for Gotham.
That’s also why I love how Nolan has been using the reference to a demonic pact that somehow manifests itself not only through the choices and reactions of Bruce Wayne, but the city as a whole: micro and macro mirror each other. For example, in the first movie we see a clear distinction between an affluent, and safe part of Gotham and a corrupt and decadent Gotham, practically represented in terms of above and below (heaven and hell). In the second movie, however, the city seems much more cleaner and organized, and yet that only turns out to be a façade (similar to how New York, despite having cleaned up the image that it had during the 70’s, nevertheless ended up suffering the worst terrorist act in U.S. history).
Similarly, with regards to the evolution of Bruce, in the first movie, an opera based on Goethe’s Faust (‘Mefistofele’ by Arrigo Boito) causes young Bruce to have a panic attack – itself a result of his fear of bats (which obviously represents something much more primordial) – and leads indirectly to the death of his parents. And yet, this same fear is later used by Ra’s al Ghul in order to train Bruce, and ultimately leads him to become Batman. That is, he overcomes his own fear and channels it to inspire fear in others. Though he beats Ra’s al Ghul in the end, one could also argue that Ra’s al Ghul was ultimately victorious, considering how Batman’s actions not only produced the Joker, but also destroyed Gotham’s other champion, Harvey Dent.
The result is that Gotham is in even more turmoil by the end of the second movie. One should therefore recall Ra’s al Ghul’s ambiguous statements concerning the origins of the League of Shadows, and how they had been responsible for the fate of civilizations since antiquity: "We sacked Rome, loaded trade ships with plague rats, burned London to the ground." Maybe the Joker was part of their plan all along. After all, the Joker not only characterized himself as a mindless agent of chaos, but also admitted to his relationship with Batman being based on a “battle for Gotham’s soul.”
This is similar to the wager that Mephistopheles has with God for the soul of humanity, which in turn is meant to be decided by the actions of Faust. However, though Mephistopheles does everything in his power to destroy Faust by tempting him to turn against God, Faust only comes to realize the true essence of what is good by being confronted by these turmoils; God doesn’t have to do anything (which in turn suggests that God needs, or uses, the devil for his own purposes: demonstrating to mankind their own intrinsic divinity).
The Riddler could very well represent this search by Batman for an answer, i.e., his attempts to rid Gotham of evil, even that which he brought upon Gotham by his attempts to do good. Robin (Gordon’s son), coming from a modest environment (and thus without the financial support that Bruce could rely upon), could represent the other part of Gotham. But as a student of both his father and Batman, he could in turn help Gotham by combining his father's skills and his character, namely his honesty and trust in Gotham’s legal institutions (compare this with Batman’s covert use of mobile phone’s which – along with the infringement of basic rights of privacy – also resulted in the confusion of innocent civilians and ‘terrorists’) with Batman’s training and strenth (not to mention that both are excellent detectives).
I could also see a role for either Catwoman or Talia al Ghul. The latter would make more sense, though I know little of her story. Either way, a love-interest makes sense as the ultimate catalyst for Bruce’s demise/redemption. This also turned out to be the case for Harvey Dent: Joker’s deduction that she was important to Batman and her final death proved to be the final instruments of his demise (demonstrating how love can be both destructive while also capable of inspiring the best in man).
-
Would be a great pick, ALthough it would be a repeat of Ras Al Ghul to some extent.
-
...what about the Jolie rumor of being catwoman? According to news stories she's been "asking her friends" what they thought about her playing the villian. Personally, I thought THAT was what you were going to be talking about...
-
I still say approach the Penguin as a Hannibal Lector "caged bird" mastermind as played by Toby Jones (Infamous), and the Catwoman as a mercenary thief assassin maybe brought in to kill the Bat (and get someone like Eva Green to play her) and I think they'd both work. I'd rather see that before a Fincher-rip off Riddler, and so soon after the Joker.
-
I've been saying Depp should play Freddy in every talkback about this shitty new Platinum Dunes remake for the past few months. I think it's the perfect bit of stunt casting and would class the whole thing up. It brings his career full circle and it ties a respectful nod to the original. Yeah, they could give Englund a stupid cameo as the principle of the school or something too but Jonny Depp as Freddy Krueger just feels right to me. Ben Foster is a squirmy little hack actor that just kinda looks like Robert Englund. That's just short sighted fanboy wank casting as far as I see it.
