Joe Carnahan's KILLING PABLO Loses Javier Bardem, Gains...
... the very capable Edgar Ramirez.
My name is Mr. Beaks, and I've been a fan of Joe Carnahan's dating back to 2002's NARC. Why I've had to settle for one whole Joe Carnahan movie since then... eh, let's not relive the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 horror stories, the WHITE JAZZ scheduling snafus or the $2 million, multi-state skee-ball scam. Let's look forward to KILLING PABLO.
If you click on the above link, you'll read a scoop from CHUD's Devin Faraci, who got word straight from Carnahan that Ramirez is taking over the coveted role of Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar from Javier Bardem. While it's bummer to lose one of the greatest actors working today, Ramirez has been building up a fairly impressive resume over the years with supporting turns in Soderbergh's CHE movies (as Ciro Redondo), THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM and Tony Scott's bug-fuck DOMINO. If Carnahan says the Venezuelan star is fully committed to playing one of the most feared crimelords of the twentieth century (which means he'll be packing on "anywhere from 35 to 40lbs"), then I'm in. Let's hurry up, and get the financing and the dates set before it all goes away!
And if you're wondering why this monster's story is worth telling, Mark Bowden has the answer.
Principal photography is still scheduled to begin in the fall (according to this July 28 article from Variety). Yari Film Group will produce.

Yes?

could this day get any worse!?

is bardem dropping out of stuff?
the only thing i've heard from him since "no country" is that he's dropping out of this and "9". -
Ramirez is a most excellent choice for the role and will surely prove himself to be a wonderful replacement for Bardem.

AAAAAAAAAAAND no one knows who the hell he is...
by the marquis de side 3
seriously. thoght you were gonna say Robert Downey Jr. in "brown face" there for a moment... =0p

Wasn't Ramirez supposed to star in ESCOBAR?
And now he's supposedly cast in KILLING PABLO?
As the same guy?
What is going on here? -
It was appallingly bad (and this is coming from someone who was really looking forward to it). I hope this is good, but I don't have much hope.

than Vinny Chase.
-
Anyone have any links to the horror stories mentioned above? Wikipedia is vague about why he left. Just conflicting views about tone of the film...
-
maybe you haven´t heard anything about him, but he´s a great actor, you really can´t top Bardem but he´s the best next choice
-
VICTORY!
-
Just for scnizzengiggles... but to be honest though I would have loved to see Bardem as Escobar, Ramirez sounds like a capable replacement (perhaps the Carnahan script read better than the Fuqua/Stone project hence his joining this one); my guess there's going to pressure on Carnahan to cast a star in one of the other roles - at one point, Bale was attached as Steve Jacoby...whether he still is, who knows?
-
...he gets fucked by every actor in Hollywood....and not in the good way either.
-
Ramirez HAS played colombian before "punto y raya" and can pull a better colombian than Bardem...just saying
-
Can't remember him...

The first 2 acts of Narc is the only good thing he's put on scre
by hollywoodsummers
I loved this book and I really hope he can hit it out of the park, but I'm not convinced. This thing has been in development forever. I think there's a better odds he'll miss. Hope not though!!

He was Bourne's badass counterpart, whom he decides not to shoot in the car wreck. Basically, the same role Clive Owen and Karl Urban played in the first two.

Isn't Ramirez a relief pitcher for the Yankees?
by youareallmybastardchildren
Wow, a dual threat!
-
making films like he did with the first one. Blood, Guts, Bullets, and Octane was badass! Narc was okay, but smokin' aces was a joke. It looked like it might be a return to BGBO-like form, but it ended up being a total fucking mess.
-
that Joe Carnahan turns into a asshole? Everybody agrees he is a good writer; they want to work him and then mid-way through they just abruptly leave. This has happened too many times to just be scheduling conflicts.
-
Get your ass in gear Carnahan! You film like old people fuck!
-
That's been his best work to date.
-
thats what bardem stated somewhere that he's taking a year off or some shit like that.
-
Sue me.
-
He already dropped out of "Nine" earlier this year because of "exhaustion" (but was replaced by God, I mean, Daniel Day-Lewis, so I'm not complaining), and now this one too. Sounds like he's just skipping off into the sunset with Miss Cruz.
-
I was really anticipating this movie. Can you imagine how sick Bardem would've been as Escobar.I still probably see this because Paublo Escobar's life story is truely an amazing tale.
-
Alfred Molina would have been a good fit for the role.
-
Fuck. I loved LA Confidential and was hoping for some good Ellroy action to wash away the putrid taste of the Black Dahlia.
-
The one who boffed Mary Louise.
-
...To 40 per cent. Javier was 50 per cent of the coolness, and probably would have helped with securing a real budget and release, and you knock off 10 per cent for losing the pairing. Poor Joe, can't catch a break. This was one of those films that sounded too perfect to be true anyway.

Is an upcoming powerhouse of a star. Lots of potential with this young, worldly prospect: he comes off as very intelligent [at the same time I believe he's fluent or at least in touch with 5 languages or something to that effect] and great presence each time I've experienced a role of his. I love actors who are properly and efficiently typecasted, in this case a hunter/assassin for hire... but at the same time I'm excited to see him finally play a role outside the bounds of what he's known for. I'm game Carnahan. Fuckin' GAME.
-
Weird casting. Sounds very desperate and last-minute. I mean, the guy is decent for small roles, but as one of the most feared drug-lords ever??
-
That fool is beloved in LA now but bad move for casting him in a film, because I'm pretty sure he is a horrible actor... I'm kidding! I find this casting risky since he is widely known as "that assassin in the third Bourne which Bourne didn't kill". I think he was in Vantage Point but that movie sucked so bad I erased most of it from my memory.
-
Trading Bardem for Ramirez is akin to trading Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas.
-
Edgar Martinez, right on. He's a great actor who might blossom in such a role. I hope Carnahan gives him everything he needs.
This is could be good. -
Guess E got that one copyrighted tho
