Joe Carnahan's KILLING PABLO Loses Javier Bardem, Gains...

Published at:  Aug 14, 2008 12:22:25 PM CDT

... the very capable Edgar Ramirez.

My name is Mr. Beaks, and I've been a fan of Joe Carnahan's dating back to 2002's NARC. Why I've had to settle for one whole Joe Carnahan movie since then... eh, let's not relive the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 horror stories, the WHITE JAZZ scheduling snafus or the $2 million, multi-state skee-ball scam. Let's look forward to KILLING PABLO.

If you click on the above link, you'll read a scoop from CHUD's Devin Faraci, who got word straight from Carnahan that Ramirez is taking over the coveted role of Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar from Javier Bardem. While it's bummer to lose one of the greatest actors working today, Ramirez has been building up a fairly impressive resume over the years with supporting turns in Soderbergh's CHE movies (as Ciro Redondo), THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM and Tony Scott's bug-fuck DOMINO. If Carnahan says the Venezuelan star is fully committed to playing one of the most feared crimelords of the twentieth century (which means he'll be packing on "anywhere from 35 to 40lbs"), then I'm in. Let's hurry up, and get the financing and the dates set before it all goes away!

And if you're wondering why this monster's story is worth telling, Mark Bowden has the answer.

Principal photography is still scheduled to begin in the fall (according to this July 28 article from Variety). Yari Film Group will produce.

Ramirez is a most excellent choice for the role and will surely prove himself to be a wonderful replacement for Bardem.

    KILLING PABLO vs. ESCOBAR

Wasn't Ramirez supposed to star in ESCOBAR?

And now he's supposedly cast in KILLING PABLO?

    by dr_buggerlugs

Just for scnizzengiggles... but to be honest though I would have loved to see Bardem as Escobar, Ramirez sounds like a capable replacement (perhaps the Carnahan script read better than the Fuqua/Stone project hence his joining this one); my guess there's going to pressure on Carnahan to cast a star in one of the other roles - at one point, Bale was attached as Steve Jacoby...whether he still is, who knows?

He was Bourne's badass counterpart, whom he decides not to shoot in the car wreck. Basically, the same role Clive Owen and Karl Urban played in the first two.

making films like he did with the first one. Blood, Guts, Bullets, and Octane was badass! Narc was okay, but smokin' aces was a joke. It looked like it might be a return to BGBO-like form, but it ended up being a total fucking mess.

    by comedian_x

that Joe Carnahan turns into a asshole? Everybody agrees he is a good writer; they want to work him and then mid-way through they just abruptly leave. This has happened too many times to just be scheduling conflicts.

    by flickchick85

He already dropped out of "Nine" earlier this year because of "exhaustion" (but was replaced by God, I mean, Daniel Day-Lewis, so I'm not complaining), and now this one too. Sounds like he's just skipping off into the sunset with Miss Cruz.

...To 40 per cent. Javier was 50 per cent of the coolness, and probably would have helped with securing a real budget and release, and you knock off 10 per cent for losing the pairing. Poor Joe, can't catch a break. This was one of those films that sounded too perfect to be true anyway.

    Love Bardem, but Ramirez

    by halberd

Is an upcoming powerhouse of a star. Lots of potential with this young, worldly prospect: he comes off as very intelligent [at the same time I believe he's fluent or at least in touch with 5 languages or something to that effect] and great presence each time I've experienced a role of his. I love actors who are properly and efficiently typecasted, in this case a hunter/assassin for hire... but at the same time I'm excited to see him finally play a role outside the bounds of what he's known for. I'm game Carnahan. Fuckin' GAME.

    by spectrebeeyatch

That fool is beloved in LA now but bad move for casting him in a film, because I'm pretty sure he is a horrible actor... I'm kidding! I find this casting risky since he is widely known as "that assassin in the third Bourne which Bourne didn't kill". I think he was in Vantage Point but that movie sucked so bad I erased most of it from my memory.
