New BODY OF LIES Trailer As Impressive As Old BODY OF LIES Trailer!

Published at:  Aug 13, 2008 9:16:30 PM CDT

Beaks here...

No one kicked up much fuss when the international trailer for Ridley Scott's BODY OF LIES dropped last month. Now that we're clear of Comic Con, THE DARK KNIGHT and the WATCHMEN teaser, that ought to change.

(FYI, there are HD versions available here.)

It's like an action-packed SYRIANA!

As has been made abundantly clear over the last couple of years, American audiences are not flocking to movies that deal directly with the War on Terror or the War in Iraq. Perhaps that's why Warner Brothers has opted for an October 10 release date - rather than November or December - for what should be one of their major '08 awards contenders. Or maybe they're hoping for another THE DEPARTED (which opened in October '06).

As you might know, BODY OF LIES reunites Leonardo DiCaprio with his Oscar-winning DEPARTED screenwriter William Monahan. Based on a novel by The Washington Post's David Ignatius, it's about a CIA Operative (Dicaprio) who gets jerked around by the veteran head of Jordanian intelligence (Russell Crowe) whilst attempting to take down a big-time terrorist leader. It's dense material, but it's also got a crowd-pleasing thriller bent that should win over folks who'd rather not cough up $10-a-pop to relive ongoing foreign policy blunders.

...Its true though, the film still looks as dull as dishwater. It's a shame the presence of two highly paid stars can't see this film be Scotts introduction to the wonderful world of DTV. Great title too, Shannon Tweed would be jealous.

    by just_tom

I'm witholding judgment. This trailer is better than the first by leaps and bounds, without doubt. However, Ridley Scott is not, unfortunately, the most subtle of directors and is often willing to let story subtlety go right out the window to accomodate conventional action. This might be a movie that does the middle east right (Syriana) or one that uses it simply as a set-up for mindless action (The Kingdom). I hope it's the former.

I'll say this: the second trailer looks leaps and bounds

    by gqtaste

better than the first. that first trailer was dull, ugly to look it, it had the slightest glimpse of Russell and Co's A good year w/ him w/ the head jack to his ear. Of course it's a different plot but I can't help but think of two films ago by Rigley. I know that was a small piece he wanted to make close to home and thats fine. Only problem was Russell was terribly miscast as a Gordon Gecko type. Jury is still out on this. I'm beginning to think that Leo is going to get stereotyped into this sort of character. It seems like he's played a cop or now cia for the last three years and w/ the upcoming Marty pic Shutter Island again he's playing a cop. I'd really like to see Leo play in a comedy or a romantic type film. All he's been doing are very serious films. And thats fine but mix it up a bit. I still say he was about the worst person to cast in the gangs of new york you could have found. Him taking on Daniel Day as New York was a f'ing joke and Cameron was miscasts as well, but clearly not as much as Leo. I'm sick of these pretty boy actors playing tough dudes. Like brother Affleck in Gone baby gone. Some of the stuff he pulls in that movie we're funny as hell. Like the bar scene or when he goes to see "cheese" about where the girl is, etc. But back to leo. He's just too good looking to be playing all these hard ass mother fuckers! Hell, even take a dude like Collin Farrel, he's good looking but somehow it works w/ him playing badass's. Call me crazy but Jury's still out on this one.

Michael Clayton was a solid film with some ver impressive performances. If it was made in the 70's it would be apprectiated, but ADD fucks like yourself can't appreciate good storytelling. You probably think All the President's Men was boring as well.

Being such a fan I am of Walsh, I feel embarrassed to admit that hadn't occurred to me already. I personally thought that first trailer was extremely underwhelming. For one thing they laid on the "2 guys bickering over phone calls" WAY too much.

Yes, most of the anti-war, anti-US-foreign-policy movies have been garbage. But if Elvis was to go after Osama while singing a catchy tune, I'd be there in a heartbeat. It could be Osamabake! Or Osama Las Vegas. Or Elvis Vs. Osama: The Final Chapter. Elvis could sing a song about defusing a bomb. It'd be great.

    by mr. profit

I went to see The Dark Knight for a second time in Directors Hall. The audience was older (as usual with Directors Hall screenings) so I guess that's why they showed this trailer. And once it finished, there was definite interest amongst the crowd. I know I dug it. I'll check it out because it has 2 great actors, and an excellent director at the helm. Hope it's good.

Little more than two people clashing back and forth with belligerent threats to destroy/expose one another for 60 seconds. It impresses no one, and without a little more context, it just comes off as near-farcical.

Maybe it was an off day for me, but I just couldn't get into the film. I don't know why. Keep in mind, I'm the same person that thought the ending to There Will Be Blood unraveled the rest of the damn picture and turned it into nothing more than a farce. No Country for Old Men, for example.

    by iamjack'suserid

I don't measure a film's "smartness" by the material, but by how the actual filmmaking parallels the material. No Country is a perfect example of a movie that allows the story to guide the direction, acting, etc. instead of the other way around, like Syriana. No Country is smart in that it embraces the story's deliberate pacing and simplicity, and works with it instead of creating something much more than what it is.

Good example. I think Syriana was smarter in its material, but yes No Country is smarter in its actual execution, which is why I appreciate both films. Both are valid marks in a film, and rarely will you see both on equally good levels in their execution in one film. Well done, sir.
