Angelina Jolie Cruises EDWIN A. SALT!

Published at:  Aug 11, 2008 9:53:57 PM CDT

Beaks here...

Though he's evidently on the cusp of a career resurrection thanks to his much-heralded cameo in TROPIC THUNDER, Tom Cruise's comeback movie will not be EDWIN A. SALT. (For the record, I don't think it'll be VALKYRIE either.)

With Cruise out, Sony and director Philip Noyce went scrambling for a replacement, and they ended up with a pretty cool one: Angelina Jolie. Though this will force Kurt Wimmer to pen another rewrite on a script he'd been tailoring for the notoriously finicky Cruise for over a year, Variety is reporting that the alterations won't be too extreme. Having read an earlier draft (FYI, it's about a CIA agent who's forced to wreak Wimmer-ian havoc when he's outed as a possible Russian spy), I can't say I'm surprised; if Salt is still married, they'll obviously have to change up the dynamic there, but other than that... Jolie's whole shtick has been to do what a man does, only sexier. This is perfect for her.

EDWINA SALT should go before cameras in February '09 (according to Hollywood Elsewhere's Jeffrey Wells, who communicated with Noyce this afternoon).

Another "wrongfully accused" thriller for Wacko Tom after Minority Report, Mission Impossible (twice!), The Firm, Vanilla Sky... the list goes on. He played that to DEATH. Switching genders may be a good idea. And Angie's gotta eat.

    Angelina Jolie

    by quandrax

I admit, I don't really follow her career. But, when was the last time she did a non-action flick? I mean, this is the actress from Girl, Interrupted. She can act the hell out of just about anything. But, is she doing nothing but Hollywood shit now? She needs to do a Rainwoman, or something. Maybe reboot Nell.

    by the insneider

I liked Wimmer's script a lot. It's very much like Bourne meets Mission: Impossible so I can see why Cruise ultimately passed. I think Jolie is a great replacement. They should change the name though. She doesn't look like an Edwin. And Salt invites too many headlines peppered with puns. Uh oh, there we go again...

    by spencertrilby

Haven't seen it, but I've heard many positive things about her performance. Granted, her action roles are terrible... Mr & Mrs Smith was one of the lamest actioners ever. Double bill with Fantastic Four; I barely survived it.

Thanks for this, coup. Like I said, I don't follow her career. This Mr. & Mrs. Smith phase of hers isn't very pleasing, but we all gotta' eat.

    Creepy Cruise

    by a rolling stone

I lost most of my respect for Cruise after that creepy, incoherent speech he gave regarding Scientology, and how he was going to save us all. I'm looking forward to this redeeming performance in Tropic Thunder I keep hearing about. I'd like to like him, but I'm not doing all the work. He has to make an effort, too.

And despite Maggie's weird eyes (to me, it looks like she's sporting twin shiners), I was SOOOO happy Katie Holmes was not in the Dark Knight. Everytime I watch Batman Begins and she says "the good people of Gotham", I wanna puke. And I'm not the type who enjoys puking, but Katie brings it out in me.

    by hint_of_smegma

.....has Jolie done anything worthwhile yet? I have yet to see a film by her that was better than 'ok' at best. The only reason she has her current status is due to who she's married to -before she got Pitt to dump Aniston she was a b list actress. She isn't worth any of the hullabaloo surrounding her.

    by cloudrider`

it's pitt's status that was lifted since the pitt-jolie combination. pitt was a cool actor before, but he was also shown to have lousy eyes when it came to women. aniston looks like a horse. now with jolie next to him, he looks more like a movie god than a mere cool actor.

jolis has not been a b-list actress since she did gia. she has the chop. she just needs to be more selective in picking the scripts.

as far as i'm concerned, there are only a handful moviestar goddeses today who are great thespians to boot. nicole kidman, charlize theron, and then of course, jolie.

the rest are beautiful actresses, but never moviestars, much less goddeses.

    by hint_of_smegma

All the movies mentioned so far were no better than 'meh' at the very best. She is a workaday actress who has been packaged as a media interest, nothing more. She certainly is no great thespian.

    Girl, Interrupted was pretty great

    by conniebrean1

But I have to say Winona Ryder blows Jolie away in that movie. Watch it again. Ryder has the much harder role and really makes us care about not only her but about all the other characters. She carries that whole movie on her own. Jolie got all the attention (and the Oscar) for the showier part, but Ryder was really robbed of recognition. I know she's already got two nominations, but by this time she should be up to at least four (Girl, Interrupted, Heathers), not to count how she started that whole hot goth chick look long before Christina Ricci came to the scene (though they're both in Mermaids - check it out). The woman is a terrific actress. I hope she does more high profile work in the future.

    by hint_of_smegma

.......movie again. Ryder has always been a decent actress, I don't need to waste another 2 hours of my life watching a naff film like Girl, Interrupted again to see a single decent performance. Yes she's good. The film however is not. Jolie certainly wasn't and the current emphasis on her totally escapes me.

Jolie is that go to action girl...

    by mr. profit

Her audience (mostly of women) turn out to see her in bad girl roles. When I saw "Wanted", there were alot of small groups of girls scattered around the audience. They love her. And if not for her, Wanted wouldn't have made 50 million the first weekend. She does action. It's not a bad thing. She does what countless other leading men do, doesn't turn down a god action role. She isn't typecast at all, especially since she has an Oscar, and good roles that showcase her acting skills throughout her resume. Glad to see some women don't get caught up in Hollywood glamourpuss mode. Also cool to see someone so disgustingly rich garner 14 million for a fucking baby picture then quickly donate the money to charity.

Cruise's Hollywood power is circling the drain...Jolie would be better if they could cg out most of her face. It's too distracting. If you go back to her early films she looks like she might have been a human being once.

    by geteveryone

I remember very vaguely that she played a decent part in that, but up until this point I'd forgotten that movie even existed; received my first blow job part way through (albeit from a generously meaty girl), so there was no interrupting her till she was done. O, sex story and pun. Score one for me.

That was a truly great performance. Also, Kurt Wimmer? The guy who read 1984 and decided to add an action hero to the story when he made Equilibrium? Ha! I admit, that movie is a very guilty pleasure.

dont let those "media interest" clouds your judgement. it's not her fault. those cheap tabloid stuff should never be movie buff's concern anyway(nor should tom cruise's being sciencetology). judge what you see on the screen. judge the work and the work alone. that's what a real film lover would do.

jolie has huge charisma and talent. even in mediocre movies, that talent is transparent. pushing tin & bone collector are both so-so films, but she completely disappears into the roles there.

you want to talk crap, talk crap about julia roberts, winona ryder(yaaaawwwnn!!), or any of their imitations.

    by cloudrider`

nicole kidman, charlize theron, jolie... all these actresses has no problem to shed their clothings whenever the roles required. see the patterns?

no 'no-boobs' bullshit clause in their contracts. it's how you do a role! either you completely devote yourself into the role, or you do the julia roberts way and just flash that million dollar smile and do the same role over and over and over and over for all for all eternity.

    Jolie is a underrated actress

    by anonymous2008

She's had various award-winning/critically acclaimed performances such as Girl Interrupted, Gia, George Wallace, Playing By Heart, The Fever, The Bone Collector, The Good Shepherd, A Mighty Heart, and most recently Changeling directed by Clint Eastwood. She just has a bad habit of choosing films for the paycheck not the role.

    by anonymous2008

Since 2004 here are her non-action films: The Fever (2004) with Vanessa Redgrave, The Good Shepherd (2006) with Matt Damon & Robert De Niro, A Mighty Heart (2007), and Changeling (2008) with John Malkovich and Amy Ryan. Her actions films have been her biggest box office hits, so it shows that she can do action and drama. But I agree that I hope she does more serious roles and less blockbuster action films.
