FLASH GORDON Approaching!!
Merrick here...
Evidently undaunted by the poor reception that met the Sci Fi Channel's recent reinvention of the the concept, Sony is slowly forging ahead with plans to bring FLASH GORDON back to the big screen.
Writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have been brought in to sript the project, which is still in the hands of Breck Eisner (SAHARA, THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON remake). I'm deliriously tired & when I first read the name 'Matt Sazama', I read it as 'Matt Shazam' and thought it was just about the coolest thing I'd ever seen.
"Flash Gordon" centers on the titular young polo player who is kidnapped and taken to the distant planet Mongo, where he and companions Dale Arden and Hans Zarkov embark on a series of adventures fighting a ruler named Ming the Merciless.
...says THIS ARTICLE in Hollywood Reporter.
SAHARA seems to be a love/hate kind of thing for most people (although I somehow managed to neither love it or hate it) & Eisner & Co. may do a completely fine job adapting FLASH for all I know.
But...no matter how well this comes together...they'll never manage to bump the garishly bombastic Dino De Laurentiis version from its very special place in my heart.
Check out this Zapp Brannigan opening narration from the animated series of the late 70s...

You'll never make a version that's remembered more than that one. A better version, maybe, but that movie is the pinnacle of the so-bad-it's-awesome genre. GORDON'S ALIIIIIIIVE!!!

Okay I'll stop now before I take up all the great lines. {ggg!}
-
Yes the effects were dire; yes Brian Blessed chewed so much scenery that the budget doubled to replace it; yes Sam Jones has the charisma of a stick; but you'll never top 1980's Flash Gordon for sheer guilty pleasure. That sound track, the appalling script, the serious talent employed (Dalton, von Sydow, etc.) and Ornella Muti. Oh God, Ornella Muti. Excuse me for a few minutes...
-
do not remake this. The chances of getting a director as good as that one and a cast as good are fucking zero. Do not do it.
-
The 80's Flash is a camp classic & no mistake. Queen's soundtrack is amazing. So many classic lines "Gordon's Alive?"
-
Bruce Campbell for Vultan!
-
I remember seeing this when it first came out, at a Saturday matinee naturally. It got beat on by the critics and I think the general public's perception is that it is a corny/bad film. Personally, I think it is a great piece of fun, reaffirmed by having just watched it again last week on OnDemand. http://tinyurl.com/69slx6
-
... outside his own kingdom-uh, the hanter becomes the hanted!' - I hope Brian Blessed returns as Vultan. Let's face it, the guy would don the wings again in a heartbeat. But knowing Hollywood the way we all do, they'll probably cast Elijah Wood or someone like that...

Ok I saw Dino's Flash Gordon in theatre's and thought it was incredible...best movie ever (I was 8 give me a break) Hadn't seen the movie since 1980...always wanted to get a copy of it...found one last week on DVD...special edition with flip up case...mint. I watched it with huge anticipation and holy crap it was pure havarti cheese...dayum. Still loved it...made my kids watch it too...love the lizard men...and did notice Deep Roy as the Princess's pet...also notice the head bird guy is the voice of the head Gungan leader from Phantom Menace...yeah I'm that damn good.

Flesh Gordon rocked my world when i was nout but a little lad!
-
...with Sam Jones (that's not a name... it's an alias!) is some f**ked up shit, but I can't help watching it. Hawkmen flying around on motionless wings, Lizardmen with faces inside their mouths, bowl-shaped forest planets, barely-clothed harem slaves who for some reason wear pantyhose under their costumes, garish disco colors, Art Deco nightmare set designs, horrendous acting, the whole thing is like a bad acid trip and f**kin' hilarious. Stoner sci-fi!

...the closest we'll get to a faithful big screen adaption of Alex Raymond's beautiful work. It's a beloved movie in Europe and the UK, and I'm one of the belovers. Gorgeous, exciting, hilarious with a cast that makes all other films look like their amateur dramatic efforts. Wonderful stuff. Lets just hope that the producers of this have learned the mistakes made by the utter fuckwits who made the 2007 tv show. What a fucking disgrace that piece of shit was. If I was rich I'd be pulling a Jay and Silent Bob and spending my fortune hunting every last one of those fuckers involved, except the hunting down wouldn't involve fast cut plane flights punctuated with amusing beatings - no, it would be a descent into a murky underworld punctuated by payments to hired killers.
Flash Gordon 1980 was probably one of the single greatest movies ever made. It had flaws, yes indeed, but none that actually mattered compared to the whole - it was cinematic perfection. -
Why would they make a Flash Gordon movie now with the horrible television show on? The show is so bad it will undoubtedly cast a negative shadow on the movie.
-
Gosh sakes Muffy... That Ming is a frightful bore, what?
I say, let's go round the polo grounds and have a cocktail whilst we wait for the invasion. It will be smashing!! Oh, and bring your little friend Zarkov too. He's soooo amusing! -
Was a fun film. Nothing incredible but fun AND it looked pretty good. Almost to the point that maybe the 2nd Unit was most responsible for that. I picked up the DVD for $5 the other day and it has a behind the scenes doc on it. Every scene it shows with Eisner talking to the actors on scene it always shows the actors arguing with him - LOL.
-
I might watch the DVB-T-Record, I've made last Year.
-
The best version ever and proves some sci fi just has to be weird to be cool. Thats why the first two Batman movies were good and the latest one is crap.
-
Fuck you, hollywood. My guess is they want to twist everthing into their "reality" programming. Everone is young & rich & doesn't have to work. When Ming shows up in this version the first thing Flash will do is take off his shirt because that's what the do in La-La land when then have an earthquake.
-
At last, a science fiction here for the upper classes... and quite right too, what.
-
Some people think he was better in
Flash Gordon than he was as James Bond. . . -
is a remake of Star Wars where Luke is a caviar fisherman rather than a moisture farmer, and Han is a Filipino maid smuggler, and we're all set.

Starring Shia LaBeouf as Luke, Ellen Page as Leia, that dude from Hannibal Rising as Darth Vader, and of course, Harrison Ford back for Han Solo. And it will be the best movie of all time. Even better than Star Wars: Episode II.

Anyone heard anything regarding a BluRay release?

Than Max von Sydow and there will never be an actor with a cooler name than that guy.
This could be great if done right but the Sci Fi network's version was an example of how to not do it. I don't know why they feel thay can set anything in a forest and that will make it look like a sci-fi fantasy movie. -

Nothing Will Beat The Coked-Out Psychedelic Disco 80s Version

Nothing. Ornella Muti, Ming's daughter, is in my top ten space sluts of all time. I LOVE how they hint to the fact that they're sleeping together. AWESOME! SPACE INCEST! Fucking great soundtrack too.
-
[Ming gives wedding officiator the "what bitch?!?!" look]
.."Umm UNTIL such time as you grow weary of her"
Ming-" I do!"
Dale" I do NOT!!"
Queen- "FLASH!!"
Ahh one of the best from the 80's. Know how you know you are a geek w/ great geek friends? When you spend the summer of '81, playing the soundtrack at your buddy's house, and ACTING out the entire film with all the nerdy latch key kids that hung out there because your boy had a stereo, HBO, and Steak-Umms. Flash ain't a movie...it's a MOVEMENT, bitches!
The best time was debating which was better, Empire or Flash. (we were 10. Did NOT know better) Empire had Yoday, Han, and the Falcom. Flash had Hawkmen, rocket cycles, and Ornella. Luke's deadbeat dad split the difference...but it was close. And that will always be great. -
it's early, motherfuckers. sorry.
-
The 1980 version was sheer fucking awesomeness. The princess....wow. Way hotter than Leia ever was. Flash should have nailed her when he had the chance.
-
If Shia plays Luke, it seems real life has already prepared him for the final show down with Vader in Empire Strikes Back. Can they just have Vader cut off his pinkie instead of his whole hand for realism.
-
Was beautifully cheesey to the max. It's cheese was part of it's charm. I can't see a remake being any better than that movie.
-

I also hear that JJ Assbag is remaking that other nerdfest
by dick bahls
Star Trak. This time he feels that that should have an ayrian playing the captain. They should also remake Gone With the Wind with that guy who took his shirt off during the earthquake, & Citizen Kane with that dude Puck from the Real World.
-
That's why Star Wars was so great, cus Lucas took everything that sucked in Flash Gordan and made it better, more fun and better designs for everything.
I have no faith in any kind of new Flash movie being any less cheap and ugly as all the previous versions. Unless they get some mad genius director out there who really knows how to do it right and have it relate to an audience like me who doesn't really give a damn about Flash Gordan, hey, i've tried, but damn it sucks bad. -

The savior of the Universe is a fucking polo player? Not on my fucking watch! Chrischex, why not make him a fucking bridge champion or maybe the world's greatest beanbag tic-tac-toe player? Maybe the Grand Champion of shuffleboard? This is got to be bullshit cause polo is fucking ass compared to football when it comes to heroes. Sorry but it's a fact. What the hell can a polo player do besides his taxes or get his car detailed or maybe verbally spar with a waiter over the price of a double-mocha-espresso with no cream and a sprig of spearmint? Not that there's anything wrong with polo, of course.

Great porn. I can't believe no one has mentioned the porn ripoff. Also, you cinematards, you are all forgetting the late, great WILLIAM HOOTKINS, who played Zardov (sp?)'s assistenat before he died. It was his first of many on screen deaths. BILL HOOTKINS was the very famous actor we all know and love as Porkins in Star Wars. He was awesome...in college I actually interviewed him by phone while he was taking a shower. No joke.

"Father! Damn you, father!"
Good memories of this one.

If they're trying to be true to the source material, he'll be a 1930s champion polo player. But c'mon, somebody probably just pulled what they thought was basic info from a wiki article about the character.

Apparently the first episode of the SciFi series was a pretty big ratings success. Ratings dropped drastically afterwards because the show SUCKED BEYOND ALL THAT HAS SUCKED BEFORE! That may be a slight exaggeration, but not too much.
Anyway, ratings from the first episode show there is interest in a good adaption of FG. I think Sony should forge ahead and give us a good Flash Gordon. Don't try to be PC like the series. Ming has to be Fu Manchu-like (ie: some asian decent) and has to be oozing evilness. -
...lifts her leg to straddle Flash in that coffin, wow, that was a very formative moment for my perverted, 12-year-old mind at the time.
Good times, good times...
It may not be the time or place, but honorable mention must go to the ultimate space slut -- Pamela Hensley's Princess Ardala in Buck Rogers. That woman made me feel VERY funny in the pantal region.
See, this is why we need John Carter -- HOT SPACE CHICKS! -
How you doing today, good sir?You have to admit, Erin Grey looked damn good in that jumpsuit. And Gil Gerrard sucking in his gut the whole time? Priceless.I see you have Jew Hunter stinking up the joint over here as well.
-
Then count me OUT! At least have the guts to cast one of the most iconic villains in Sci-Fi as an Asian, as he's looked in the past. Political correctness has sucked the soul out of half the fun in life. >:(Oh, yeah... and DON'T HIRE WILL SMITH OR SHIA LaBEOUF AS FLASH!!! >:O
-
than watch a remake. There is something about Hollywood types who do not get that you can't take something that people love and change it, remake it, improve it, whatever it is they think they're going to do. All they do is ruin it for those people. Unless we ignore it, which is exactly what I think most fans of the De Laurentiis movie will do.
-

Most quotable movie ever? Could be... -
I think it's an absolute no-brainer to have the teaser be a verbatim recitation of the exchange between Ming and Klytus at the beginning of the 1980 film. Ideally, just keep it on a similar shot of Earth, and perhaps only at the end, right as Ming starts laughing, show a couple quick shots of Flash and whatnot. Also, get an all-star rock and electronic roster to redo the Queen soundtrack, with Dave Grohl and Brian May as the anchors on most or all of the tracks. THIS FILM CAN BE DONE RIGHT.
-
Grey was alright, I guess, but Ardala was FILTHY!!!!!
-
In the first day's comic of Alex Raymond's original Flash Gordon series Flash is introduced as, "Yale graduate and world renowned polo player." He was very much intended to be from the upper class. And polo was quite popular among the American upper class during the 1920's and 1930's, which was probably why Alex Raymond chose it for Flash. Personally, I prefer how they changed Flash to a pro football quarterback for the 1980 movie. Makes him more accessable and normal.
-

"I do NOT!" isn't doing me any favors either.
-
... FLASH! AH-AAAAAH!' The first soundtrack I ever bought and I've still got it. Although I always thought the track 'Hero' was a bit poo.
-
Or god forbid reimaging. The 1980 film is a camp classic, as proven above by basically every line in the movie being quotable. And as for the Polo - that was cosidered cool in the 1930's if you played it. Now just pretensious jack-offs and those royal assholes back in the U.K. play it. Fuck those royal wankers. I'd like to see any of them last one round with Lucas' daughter.
-
"Flash Gordon, quarterback, New Jets". But the original serial is still the best, fizzy rockets and all.
-
Even at 10 years old, I knew that while Han Solo was a pimp, Prince Barin was the PimpMaster General. And Ornella Muti is as fine a piece of ass as you'll ever see. She'd probably be replaced by the likes of Paris Hilton in a remake. I weep for the youth of today.

...Hurling your bodies out into the void, without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe, anything at all, you would've hidden from it in terror."

-
"I don't know, but it was pretty sensational."
-
...the "Hurling your bodies" line by Sydow. Genius..pure and simple. Even a film more accurate to the original serial would likely not be as sheer kitch-ly kewl as the 80's version.Anybody else remember the theme during the Hawkman attack on Warship Ajax from something in the arcades at the time? For you young hairless types, arcades were places we went to play video games when home video games were shite. Anyway...the arcade game "Vanguard" had the exact same theme music from the attack scene and this is before the movie too! Shit even the Atari 2600 version of Vanguard had a hyper-cheesy 1 or maybe 2 bit version! Argh! Atari! (means "attack" in Japanese!)
-
That's why I'd rather they not use the Queen music. The 1980 version is an entity unto its own. I'd rather it remain in its own beautifully encapsulated cheesiness.

I LOVE this movie and the chance to throw out my fave quotes. I'm mildly interested to see how this can be 're-imagined' but nothing...and I mean NOTHING will ever top the combination of Bold art direction, glorious costumes, bad acting, low tech effects, incredible set designs, high camp, brilliant casting and the most awesome soundtrack in film history! I want a DVD box set with interviews from director and cast and hear their thoughts on this amazing classic piece of sci-fi pulp I'm sure none of whom knew they were creating. Damn you to hell if you can't appreciate this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
ok finally thought of one. Damn gotta see it again.
-
Flash is a fucking football player. It shows in his fighting style and all-American mentality. WTF kind of fighting moves does a polo player have? STOP RUINING IT!
-
Just had to throw another in there.
-
Flash was a polo player in his original comic-strip when created by Alex Raymond. The "football-player" thing was an update (maybe trying to play off the fame of Joe Namath?). It's interesting to see that they plan to restore Flash to something closer to his origins.
-
Whoever the genius was that said that (way over in the McG talkback), take a bow. Fucking fantastic casting. He's probably the only guy I can think of who'd give that character the humour it would need. But as they'll never top that camp classic from 1980, why try?
JENSEN ACKLES = FLASH GORDON
PATRICK STEWART = MING THE MERCILESS
VANESSA FERLITO = PRINCESS AURA
MEGAN FOX = DALE ARDEN
BRIAN BLESSED = PRINCE VULTAN OF THE HAWKMEN
JUDE LAW = PRINCE BARIN
SAM ROCKWELL = DR HANS ZARKOV
RUFUS SEWELL = KLYTUS
CLAUDIA BLACK = GENERAL KALA
DIRECTOR = JOEL SCHUMACHER (seriously!)
Bitches, you all know I'm right. Let the fantasy FLASH GORDON casting commence...
PS - NO RTD VERSIONS! He already did it - it's called TORCHWOOD, and stars Barrowman as Flash. -
...from one TB to another without the fucking paragraph breaks disappearing. Now I know.
I'd trade SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT for Jensen Ackles if need be for Flash - he'd be almost as good. But either way - THIS CAN, AND MUST, BE DONE RIGHT IF IT IS TO BE DONE AT ALL!!!
Grohl and Brian May = fantastic idea. Make that soundtrack soar! -
he was the closest thing we had to 007 in The Living Daylights. Which is the best 80's Bond altogether IMHO.
-
On CD, cassette and vinyl - and 8 track if I ever find it. Queen are the best. Brian May is still a god. Roger Taylor too. "Flash Gordon" is one of my favorite things of all time ever anythings. And that cartoon is probably the classiest thing Filmation ever cranked out. "Let's just say they'll be more tractable ... easier for you to rule." And with the accent "Dem you, Fah-zah!" I'm as queer as a three dollar bill and *I* would fuck Ornella Muti. Right now.

in this increasing negative forum - That is the power of Flash. Sing along:
Just a man, with a man's courage (who knows he's),
Nothing but a man who can never fail.No one but the pure of heart can find the holy grail, ooooh, oh oh oh.Not sure what that last part refers to (allegorical?) but it is awesome.
Plus Dalton kicking that tripod over gets me every time. All you real fans know what I'm talking about. -
Cool movie.

What in the fuck are you talking about Merrick? First of all I doubt many people even remember it exists. Secondly....no one likes Sahara, and if they do it's the same people who like films like Pearl harbor or The Scorpion King, sometimes we call them simpletons. I can see liking it ironically, but it's a horrible film with a ridiculous tongue in cheek performance by the ever smirking Matthew McConoughey. I mean really inventing some love/hate thing to justify your guilty pleasure is ridiculous. It's not nearly remembered enough a film to "divide audiences".

...from the 30's???? There were 3, ya'know, Staring Buster Crabbe. Thay only formed the inspiration for Star Wars, that's all. I never get tired of seeing them. The 80's film was copied from them, more so that the original comics.

you can just imagen it now, as the cheerleaders warm up their routine. The couches inspires the teams to reach that state final...
-
..the Laurentis movie during one of TBS's endless reruns of it, and during the scene where Flash is "executed" in nothing but a pair of silver briefs, my Dad said,"Is this another damn Boomer Eisason underwear commercial?" Oh well, cracked me up pretty good.

"It's not too bad."

then it's like "we doan need no stinking tripods." Flash Gordon was campy we all agree but it was fun and sure brings back memories.
-
It's, objectively speaking, a bad film that doesn't do it's source material justice and that for you it's a guilty pleasure? because there isn't anything wrong with that. But if you can't at least admit that then i feel sorry for you.
-
You summed it up perfectly.
-
"...No he's nothing but a man, but he can never fail..."IndustryKiller!, Flash Gordon may be 'objectively speaking, a bad film', but I for one carry no guilt at all about the pleasure I derive from it. And based on the 'objectively speaking, extraordinarily bad' episode of the original serial that came on the DVD of the film I have, it seemed *very* much in the spirit of the source material.
-
Just realised you weren't talking about Flash Gordon. My apologies."He'll save every one of us, stands for every one of us!"

king of the impossible..

The epitome of a fun movie. It's great because it has soul and a vision. There's cheese to it, but you cannot argue with the world that that film creates. They just do not do production design like that anymore. I love it so much in fact I went to see it here in LA when Edgar Wright was doing his film festival and Timothy Dalton did a Q&A after the screening. The guy seemed genuinely moved at the enthusiasm the film had generated and said he was going to call up the director and tell him about how many fans it had considering it flopped upon release. Dalton also told a fucking great story about fighting on that platform of spikes.

What is this shit, he's a polo player? As if Football wasn't bad enough? Can't he be something cool like a Fighterjet pilot with the call name Flash? Fucking idiots are doing this to us!
-
Didn't Scott Bakula's character from the last Star Trek series that nobody watched play water polo? And isn't that really lame? How about a super-heroic golfer? or an adventuous ping-pong champion? or a rugged ass-kicking tiddley-winks player?
