We've Got Our First Review For David Wain's ROLE MODELS!

Now that Universal has reassured us that David Wain's ROLE MODELS (starring Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott) will hit theaters as a very profane R-rated comedy, let's check out this test screening review from "The Movie Jerk". He doesn't seem too blown away by the plot, but, as most of you know by now, it's the joke hit-to-miss ratio that really matters in films like this.

Just saw that you hadn't received any reviews on Role Models yet. Thought i'd shoot you a quick review before I went to bed.
First off i'd like to say that the version we saw last week was definitely a hard R. They'd have to cut out a ton of dialog and almost completely excise the part of "Ronnie" played brilliantly by Nick Nervies Bobb'e J. Thompson. That foul mouthed little fuck is hilarious in this movie. There is some gratuitous nudity that can be easily removed as well with no harm done to the movie.
It's a pretty generic plotwise but the strong comedic performances from everyone involved and some good jokes elevated it above most of the crap out there these days. Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott have good chemistry and play off each other well. Christopher Mintz-Plasse has a nice sophomore effort here as well. He basically plays an even nerdier McLovin. Kerri Kenney plays McLovins mom and it was fun seeing her as something other than her brilliant Trudy Weigl character from Reno 911. Elizabeth Banks is all but absent in the movie, she has some decent scenes but she didn't add anything special to the character. Hopefully she'll be more present in Zack and Miri Make a Porno. The movie is very predictable and the ending is ho-hum. I heard there were reshoots but that was over a month ago and i'm assuming those were already incorporated into the cut i saw. There is a running thread throughout the movie incorporating the band KISS but i know for many in the audience that many of those KISS related jokes (including the ending which incorporated a KISS song) went over the majority of the audiences head. I was one of the only people under 40 laughing at the ending.
The version of the movie i saw was a lot of fun, but was definitely an R. On a side note the rough cut we saw used a temporary score and the majority of it was from Back to the Future which made the epic battle at the end incredibly fucking nerdy and cool. I hope they keep it as the fusion of KISS and Back to the Future was almost too much for my brain to handle in all of its awesomeness. I can't exactly recommend the movie as I think a PG-13 version may not be nearly as good as the one I saw. I'd suggest waiting for a review of the theatrical cut and making your decision that way.
Good enough, but I was hoping for a little more regarding the relationship between Rudd and Kenney, which blossomed into a straight-up romance in the old screenplay. That sounds a little too safe for Kenney, so I pressed TMJ for some extra details.

the subplot of Rudd falling for McLovins mom was nowhere to be seen in this cut of the movie. In fact they are enemies of sorts. The epic battle at the end was incredibly entertaining as it shows everyone coming together in an epic geek battle that is both entertaining and heartwarming. Sean Willam Scotts character is a bit obsessed with the band KISS and he uses the band as a way to finally bond with Ronnie.
So there you have it. Sounds like ROLE MODELS is Nick Nervies Bobb'e J. Thompson's coming out party. Here's hoping we get a red-band trailer very soon.

a writer/director/comedian, best known for his directing and writing of Wet Hot American Summer, his involvement in Stella (with Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter), his key presence as a main member of the sketch comedy group The State, and his current hit award wining webisodes "Wainy Days".

I'd be interested to know if there are any roles for other State members outside of Kenney. I believe Ken Marino was involved at the scripting stages, so I'd be surprised if he doesn't show up.
