Merrick here...
A password protected industry tracking site called says that Shane Black is at work on a fifth LETHAL WEAPON project. It's currently unclear whether he's developed a full spec script, or has only handed in a treatment.
We are now hearing that Shane Black may have only handed in a detailed treatment to Joel Silver and that they are taking two old scripts and mashing them together to make LETHAL WEAPON 5… Also hearing that Silver is after Columbus Short for a role
...says the article, which you can find HERE. Trackingb says Gibson and Glover are interested in reprising their roles. No other details are given, except that 1) franchise producer Joel Silver has already been contacted by Black, and 2) the storyline would deal with an about-to-retire Riggs coaxing an already retired Murtaugh out for a "ride off into the sunset" case/adventure. I love what the LETHAL WEAPON films reprensent in terms of energy and attitude, although I found myself quite tired of the whole shebang by the time #4 rolled around. If this project fleshes out, Silver. & Co. would presumably go after Donner to direct. Let's hope Joel and Dick put the screws to the studio (Warners, I guess) and don't settle for a diluted PG-13 rating. The others were hard 'R'...respect that & leave it there. It's tough enough to imagine more of this shtick, but having the same shtick watered down? It should be noted that LETHAL 5 rumors have been in the wind for a while now - most visibly in the slipstream of Gibson's...incident...when it was claimed Mel wanted LETHAL 5 as a way to regain his footing.

    Two words guys: SHANE. BLACK.

    by SpencerTrilby

Any other attempt at reviving the franchise after the last couple of lame episodes would have been preposterous. But Shane Black putting back his spin to the characters he created before the franchise went downhill is on the same ballpark than Rambo IV. Could be a damn fine "back to the roots" sequel. <p> Or it might suck, but watching Kiss Kiss Bang Bang kind of keep doubts away as far as I'm concerned. Shane Black is still the man.

    The Lethal series

    by zer0cool2k2

I heard the decline of the "Lethal weapon" series described somewhere a few years back, thusly: "Lethal Weapon" was a really mean-spirited movie with a few comic elements thrown in. Each installment moved gradually toward comedy with fewer mean-spirited moments. (II was still pretty hard in my book, but by 4, it was just another action-comedy).

    So lets see...

    by skimn

Since Riggs became a father, expect a wise cracking late teens son, or a late teens daughter for a potential hostage situation. And expect a heavy handed eco-friendly message from Donner(isn't he pushing 80?). And Joe Pesci saying "The fuckin this, the fuckin that", or for the PG13 version "The friggin this, the friggin that."

  • Aug. 7, 2008, 12:10 p.m. CST

    Here's what needs to happen:

Fuck combining scripts. Joel Silver needs to fuck off and die in a horrible car accident on PCH. Shane Black needs to fucking write, direct, and have full control of this shit. Make it funny as shit, hard R, have Mr. Glover slobbering and spitting all over himself, half Gibson chained up and beaten. Tell Chris Rock to fuck off. Have Nick Nolte as the villain, a crazy ex con bent on revenge for Riggs locking him up years ago who kidnaps Rene Russo (because I want her onscreen for like 30 seconds) and threatens to cut her fucking head off. Make it tough, bad ass fucking vengeful 80s cop shit. Have a shit load of Joe Pesci who is now a fucking arms dealer that provides the boys with grenades and hand canons and shit. Have Huey Lewis do the score and a shit load of cock, strippers, and titty. This needs rain, neon lights, and Dick Donner needs to stay the fuck away you overrated slob. You didn't direct Goonies, and you fucked up your own franchise with Lethal 4.

I love these characters, but talk to Sly first

    by MrD

He went down the LE path with Rambo and Rocky. Took popular characters, put them in increasingy cartoonish situations, and lost the audience. But for the last two films, Rocky Balboa and Rambo, he took the characters back to their roots. Rocky especially hit a home run by stripping away most of the crap and focusing on the lead. I've said for years that I'd watch Riggs and Murtaugh on a fishing trip. They're fun characters to spend time with and have great chemistry. I don't need action that attempts to mimic the latest trends, or new, hip sidekicks taking away screentime from the guys we came to see.

Though half of you hate her, I still like what Jeanine Garoffolo said in her stand-up, (paraphrased of course) "Any movie with the phrase 'I'm too old for this shit' is pretty much guaranteed to suck to some extent".<p>The first was ok, the second was the best...the third unwatchable and the fourth stupid good fun...a 5th is entirely unnecessary but I'm sure we would all love a Miller-styled new Mad Max movie so balls to Riggs and up with Max fer chrisechex!!!

    Shane Black is good news

I just hope they don't kill off either Riggs or Murtaugh, the whole dying just a day away from retirement thing is a bit naff these days. And it would be nice if Riggs was a leathal weapon again like he used to be. I didn't really like him being old and decrepit in LW4.

Everything except the cock, of course. I would also like to add that the film include Lucas' daughter as the villian's hit-man. Joe Pesci returns to his Wiseguy roots and takes her out with a bat to the head. Miles away, George's goytered neck explodes and eels pop out like in the Temple of Doom. The end.

    by fassbinder79

If he's writing this then it should decent. Lethal 4 blew to be sure. But the characters are still great. All they need is a good script. I think Donner is probably not right for this unfortunately. His last few films just haven't been good enough. I would rather see someone like Verhoeven, The Hughes Brothers or Shane Black himself direct this.

This could work if it is kept to the two main characters. The problem with LW and other movie series is that characters keep getting added until the focus is no longer on the main characters. Did we really need Joe Pesci in all of these movies? If this is an R-rated action film and not a dopey PG-13 comedy, I'm there.

LW4 was mostly shitty, the rest was terrible

    by Heckles

Gibson was a puss. Russo was wallpaper. Glover was over-the-top. Rock was pointless. Pesci was tired. Li was out of place. The whole point of the franchise is Martin Riggs- the Lethal Weapon. That's the formula. I am all for character growth, but when you destroy the bad-ass title character, the movie is pointless.

My rankings for the 4 Lethal Weapon movies

    by romanocc

The original is great, as it is pretty gritty with touches of humor cause Glover/Gibson had great chemistry. LW2 was a pretty good sequel, as Pesci kept the movies from being too serious. LW3 started to get campy, and Glover/Gibson started to be clowns instead of cops, as the series should have ended there. LW4 was bad, as I remember hating the first time I saw it, and Chris Rock was totally out of place in that movie. LW5 will be another Indy IV, NOT NEEDED, the series already jumped the shark!

for the first time. i skipped over the theatrical release entirely and went Unrated. I thought the last act was up to par with the rest of the series but it really was noticeably tamer, even by my standards- which are pretty low. I don't usually care either way. But round about minute 70 when he puts that guy in a chair and pushes him over the stairs, and then pretends to shoot him over the radio- that was some bad assery right there.

Yeah sure-- 16 Blocks, Assassins, Conspiracy Theory, and TImeline are just riveting films. And don't try to pretend that because of the goofiness of my name, I am some brain-dead baboon incapable of intelligent debate. Fuck Richard Donner and fuck you. Two films he is most remembered for should not be credited to him. Yes...Spielberg directed 80% of Goonies, and you could hand a Parrot Shane Black's Lethal Weapon script and he would come back with a bad ass film. Yes, the script is that good. Donner proves how capable he is with the franchise in the hands of a much lesser screenwriter with part 4. A good director can make a bad script work, he is not that director. And before you blow your load and pounce on me waving Superman in my face-- shut the fuck up. First half = Good. Last half = he fucking blows it. <p> Now fuck off and deep-throat barbed wire you filthy filthy whore.

Is an okay director. He's completely without a signature, a defining quality to his work, but when he's at his best he can get the job done (even if the job lacks any traces of an auteur). As for another Lethal Weapon, I'd much rather see another Mad Max. Come on, Mel! Bring back Mad Max! P.S. Mel's a damn good director, he needs to get on the ball and direct more, too.

    by spud mcspud

I'd love to see this, especially if it's a Mel Gibson / Shane Black / Joel Silver nostalgia fest. Maybe they could show those Die Hard fellows how the fack this shit should be done. LW5 could be the first decent re-imagining of a franchise since... a very long time ago. Get those main players in line and go for it! But tell Rock to go fuck himself and either give Pesci something to do (liked him as an arms dealer! that could work... barely) or fuck him off too. And off Russo - not that I disliked her character, but she had nothing to do in LW4 and she'd give Gibbo's Riggs the perfect reason to go nutso and do the Riggs we know and fear from LW1. And at the end of the movie, he takes his kid and walks off into retirement and a metaphorical sunset.<P> Aw, come on. This COULD be great, y'know. At least Shia ain't in it (yet) and it CAN'T POSSIBLY end up as bad as INDY IV: KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULLFUCKERY. Keep Lucas away from it and it'll be sweet, you'll see.

Is it needed? No. Would I go see it? Yes. Riggs and Murtagh are great characters and play so well off of each other. LW4 was way better then I expected it to be. As far as the increasingly comic tone of the series, I have no problem with that. The first one was more serious because it was an introduction of the two characters, they didn't know each other and did not really want to work together, as they got to know each other and became friends, of course it's gonna lighten up. All 4 movies still had good action and good bad guys. LW4 wasn't needed, but it was unexpectedly good, so I will welcome a 5th installment.

    DGDB - re Dick Donner

    by spud mcspud

You didn't enjoy CONSPIRACY THEORY and TIMELINE? TIMELINE was something I totally wasn't up for seeing, then saw quite recently on TV - and holy shit, I REALLY enjoyed it! Yes, I do enjoy my so-shit-it's-good movies every now and again, but I did actually like that movie! And CONSPIRACY THEORY was great - Patrick Stewart as a full-on Josef Mengele badass villain, Mel subverting his entire image and film oevre up to that point by effectively playing the victim / damsel-in-distress, being saved by Julia Roberts, and all the popular conspiracy wacko theories being woven in and given props in the script. That movie is one of my ultimate guilty pleasures, it really is, and Mel's performance in it is a revelation. He was really fucking god in it.<P> Back to back CONSPIRACY THEORY with PAYBACK, then round off the night with the first LETHAL WEAPON... that's a great Gibbo night in, right there.<P> Oh, and DGDB? LOVE all the lethal weapon movies. Every single one of them. 4 Is imho the best yet. Closely followed by 1, 2 and then 3. If it'll be half as good as the second one I'll be more then satisfied. I just want to see GIBSON do action films again and to have him reteam with GLOVER in his best franchise and WITH Shane Black at the script ... Fuck this is going to be great.

I LOVED Lethal Weapon 1 & 2. Three didn't do it for me. I didn't believe that the bad guy was that bad. The Riggs I knew in 1 and 2 could easily take him down. Lethal Weapon 4 was okay...a mild bit better than 3. Shane Black has been gun shy and holding back for years. I'd like to see Lethal Weapon be an all out war and a return of the bad-ass bastard we know Riggs to be from Lethal Weapon 1 and 2. Let's go deep into dark Dark Knight dark. Last time I saw Danny Glover...he was really looking old. Like, losing muscle mass and everything. I'm in.

make irreparable damage (unlike Indy 4...even though they were both franchises that ended in ill-conceived weddings). I say get to work on the 5th, try and set the franchise right, and make the 4th one a mere blip on an otherwise pretty good quality graph. (I actually think LW2 is one of those sequels that is better than the original. It never gets mentioned on those lists of second parts better than the first. Am I the only one who thinks that? And, yeah, the 3rd one was weaker, but it still felt like Lethal Weapon to me, it bookended the then-trilogy well and had some good action beats. The 4th was scuppered by a rushed script and production. Remember this was the film that had - or perhaps still has - the quickest turnaround from principle photography to release.)

    Lethal Weapon 4

    by enderandrew

Everyone said, "why do a Lethal Weapon 4" and then it was pretty damned good. It introduced the mainstream US audience to Jet Li. Pesci was annoying almost the whole film, and yet had a great redeeming moment at the end. The film kept true to the series without just basically replaying the same material. The Lethal Weapon movies are all fun popcorn flicks. If you're telling me the quality will be as good as 4, and maybe as good as the first two, then I'm down for another.

I could enjoy it as a standalone action comedy, it was well-made and entertaining in a dumb way, but as a Lethal Weapon film it was terrible. No mullet? Babies? Laughing gas? Adorable little chinese kids? The fucking imbeciles who thought it would be a good idea to morph a hard-boiled action thriller into Friends really screwed up. LW3 wasn't much better. The post-LW2 gauntlet was picked up by The Last Boy Scout with nut-crushing brilliance. If nothing ever comes of LW5, at least we'll always Joe Hallenbeck and Jimmy Dix telling each other to shut the fuck up.

They're better off re-inventing LW with 2 new younger leads

    by Wayne6000

An LW5 could actually work as a new re-invigorated action franchise, but they're really much better off re-inventing it with two younger (and of course much cheaper) male leads, a younger director and of course a hard R rated film. Just the combined salaries of Mel and Danny to do it, would probably be in the 30 – 45 mill range. Mel isn't far off from being a billionaire from his Icon films company and The Passion of the Christ film's profits, so doesn't need to really take film acting work anymore.

there was a lethal weapon 4 script

    by eyegeeateheate

like the movie that was made without the stupid opening and joe pesci wasnt on the boat tin the beginning and it ended with a tv show where riggs was a monkey and his new partner was a slick black dude cause rianne married a producer instead of the chris rock character, it was still about chineese immagrants but way better than the changed version we saw in theatres, i hope some of the stuff from tha will be taken as the 2 other scripts mentioned

reguarding rigg's short hair in lw 4

    by cheifchirpa3000

maybe im a lethal weapon nerd but i was dissapointed that he cut his hair in part 4, but now i see that it fits and i'll tell you why, riggs may have clipped his balls a little in the fact that his character is now with girlfriend and not suicidal anymore which i wish he would have stayed, but if you remember the first lethal weapon when murtaugh turned 50 he cut his beard to look and feel younger, i guess you could say that riggs cutting his hair mirrors that. makes me feel better, though i really think the first 2 are the best and since i am a lw nerd i edited out the crap from part 3 and made a fan edit epecially the beginning where mel fucks up with the bomb and other stupid shit that i didn't like.

Lethal Weapon 3 wasn't PG-13; it was a solid, R-rated action movie. I thought as a run-of-the-mill, R-rated action movie it was pretty decent. But as a "Lethal Weapon" movie, to me, it fell a little too short and the humor was too sitcomish for my tastes. The first two movies were the best. They were basically action dramas with a little bit of humor here and there.... Anyhow, I think with Shane Black writing, and Richard Donner at the helm, "Lethal Weapon 5" could be a great movie.

Seeing that LW 4 started the trend of bringing back real action movies. I mean LW 4/DH 4.0/Rambo/Rocky Balboa/and to a lesser extent Nuke the Fridge have all been better then 90% of all action movies being released these days anyway. Its too bad Arnold Schwarzenegger isn't alive to participate in this comeback renaissance.

    Ah, talkbacks!

    by mraig

I love the arguments about political correctness/racial sensitivity in talkback about a movie series whose last entry's big running joke was the way an Asian character said "flied lice". <P> Lethal Weapon, probably like Die Hard, is just too tied to the 80s to work in the 2000s. I don't know if it was the cold war political climate or what, but stupid action movies with badass heroes just worked better then. <P> And if they made a Lethal Weapon 5 now, you just know it would have three or four heavily CGIed sequences where cars flipped through the air or helicopters crashed into buses or whatever, and they would be "exciting" I guess, but totally sterile and boring compared to the smaller action sequences in 80s movies that were all done with models or miniatures or stuntmen. Maybe that's what made the eighties movies better. Think about Die Hard 4: there were cars flipping around and everything, but was any of that a thousandth as intense or memorable as Bruce Willis pulling glass out of his foot?

You may believe a Lethal Weapon 5 is overkill (the same has been said about Indy J, Rambo, Rocky, etc.) yet, how many of you went to see the umpteenth sequel to Dr. No? I agree that this could be a decent flick with a crazed Gibson, Shane Black, dead Russo, no Pesci, etc. I still love the fuck out of the first LW.

My Lethal Weapon as a Porno

    by Bartok1001

It could be about two elderly retired police officers who need to solve their last "case", so they find their medicine so they can get it up. Rene Russo stars as Nurse Ratchet with a special guest appearance with Joe Pesci as Manny the Pimp who is both a loveable and a gruff bastard.

    Gibson in LW1

    by darthvedder81

Mel's performance in that first LW is one of my all-time favorites (for an "action" movie or otherwise). The director's cut actually is better with that awesome scene of Gibson walking into the line of fire in a schoolyard and icing some bastard from 70 yards away with his Baretta. Plus the infamous scene of Mel putting the gun in his mouth--pretty serious stuff for a buddy action pic and he knocks it out of the park with a sad and great performance.

Pesci didn't ruin LETHAL WEAPON 2

    by caruso_stalker217

He actually served a purpose in that film and they all played well off each other. It was fun to watch Gibson and Glover push him around in the third and fourth one, but his character was completely unnecessary in those movies. <p>And LETHAL WEAPON 2 is the best of the series. Hands down. Though I just rewatched LETHAL WEAPON for about the millionth time and I'll be goddamned if that thing isn't a masterpiece.

  • Aug. 8, 2008, 5:27 a.m. CST

    by caruso_stalker217

I agree that the third is the worst. It was just so uninteresting. I liked the exchanges between Riggs and Murtaugh but it really is bland as hell. And I thought Rene Russo was one of the weakest parts of the film. Her character is just shitty. <p>I also hate Jan De Bont's cinematography. Fucking lens flares all over the place and everything looks too bright. Really ugly. <p>LETHAL WEAPON 4 has a lot of problems, but it's enjoyable as hell (sappy ending and Chris Rock aside) and it's pretty amazing how well it turned out considering the time constraints they were under.

Lethal Weapon 4 was my first exposure to Jet Li

    by I Dunno

What can I say, I'm not a Hong Kong movie guy. And even though he toned down his shit considerably, even then I knew it was fucking retarded that Riggs and Murtaugh lasted more than 5 seconds against him. <p>LW4 also forgot what Riggs was all about. They forgot that he was a karate master, they have him a laser sight for his gun (he's supposed to be one of the 10 best shots in the world), the bad guys put his pregnant wife in the hospital and then taunted him about it. He should have snapped that guy's neck right in the middle of the ER and gone after everyone else. And Murtaugh was comic relief. So if they forgot what the characters are about then leave it alone.</p>

C'mon now. Who here wouldn't have taken some of that money in LW2 and followed Riggs' advice--use it for the kids' tuition or something? Murtaugh, ever the noble, says "It's blood money." After Riggs says, "So do something good with it," Murtaugh appears to think it over, clutching a wad of bills. But that's when the bad guys on the Alba Varten open fire. I might have stuffed a couple rolls of bills in my pocket. Shit--those bad dudes KILLED all their cop friends and blew up half of Murtaugh's house (the toilet bomb)

Stuff the money in my pocket. Probably as a reflex. Get home after Riggs has gone to the hospital, put my hand in my pocket and-- oh shit. Look around. Fuck, who's it gonna hurt? <p>And that's how Sgt. Murtaugh put his kids through college. The end. <p>He also kept the krugerrand that one of the cops gave to Riggs. He put it in his desk.
