From Jessica Harper to... Natalie Portman?!? Maybe?
Hey. Quint here again... I heard from natalieportman.com's lead guy who says that her reps deny the Bloody-Disgusting report "100%," but Miska's standing by his sources. So, we'll see. Here's the original report:
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I think Jessica Harper was a hottie-potatie and I also happen to think that Natalie Portman falls into the same hottie-potatie category.
In the age of remakes it takes something very special to actually get me excited to see a classic redone. When they first started talking about remaking SUSPIRIA, I thought "Oh, great. That's what we need, a crappy studio remake of Dario Argento's amazingly atmospheric classic." But then they hired a fascinating director in David Gordon Green and now, according to Bloody-Disgusting, they've cast Natalie Portman in the lead.
How about that? See what casting and an interesting director can do to change you perception of a remake? I'm not even the world's biggest fan of SUSPIRIA... don't get me wrong, I love how it looks and sounds (the Goblin score is one of the great horror soundtracks of all time), but it was never my favorite Argento flick. And even I'm starting to get buzzed about this one. What about you?

So says DOOM!
-
when Neil Labute signed up for wicker man, assuming he would do something special with it. WRONG.
-
I have no idea. Haven't seen the original in a long time.
-
please
-
but, wholly unecessary to remake.
...
THE END.
-
I'm no stranger to sarcasm, but there are limits to how far you can use it.
-
I like the cut of your hype, grueman.
-
I don't doubt DGG's ability to direct art horror, but Natalie Portman has a terminal cuteness, and it's hard to picture her actually not appearing distractingly cutesy in this movie if she couldn't do it in Goya's Ghosts when she was being tortured. I'm reminded of how Audrey Tatou dragged down an otherwise great Dirty Pretty Things because she couldn't act anything other than cute and flirty.
-
With The Rock as you? That movie sucked, dude.
-
is the greatest filmmaker os HIS generation
-
I am much less offended by a Suspiraia remake than The Birds. I think Natalie could do a great job as a scream queen although I have been unimpressed by her acting in general. I love the choice of director and am quite optimistic about this film, bring it on.
-
That's a pretty huge factor in whether I'd pay money to see this.
-
DGG sounds perfect for the directing job and Natalie Portman could be great as girl on the run in a girls' school. It's got to have really stylized visuals and atmosphere or otherwise what's the point? Just get Christopher Doyle to be the cinematographer and I think they've got all the right ingredients to do the first one proud (or at least make a pretty solid cult classic). They could even even improve on it, because, let's face it, story and character have not been Argento's strong suit.
-
It's not nearly as "beloved" as Suspiria, and the US release sucked ass anyways. The only thing they would have to do to make it work is travel back and time and get Jennifer "The Hotness" Connelly back in her youthful, nubile days.
-
she's a terrible actress now. what happened?
-
DGG and Zoey have already worked together. She's more Jessica Harper than Natalie Portman. And she's cute but doesn't have to always be cute.
-
The concept of remaking classic, already successful films turns me off. I could care less that these are pretty good choices for a Suspiria remake. Re-releases are much cheaper, and more respectful to everyone involved with the first. Of course, respect and rationality pale in comparison to $$$$
-
The rest is shit...They'll even tell you that in the trailer for the original ( in not so many words ) but its true
-
I don't want to be presumptuous but I would appreciate an answer, Quint. I feel that "potatie" should rhyme with "hottie" not "potato." Can you verify, please?
-
Natalie Portman peaked with her first movie. You know when a stalet has peaked when they start talking about doing a sequel to the movie that made them famous. Winona Ryder did it 10 years ago when she started talking about a sequel to Heathers, and Portman did it a year or two ago when she started talking about doing a sequel to Leon. Give it up, Portman. Your time is over and nobody cares.
-
I hate to say that because she is one of the most beautiful women in the world, and she comes across as a very thoughtful, intelligent person. But the girl can't act. I wish she could, but she can't. She simply is not good at her craft. She's wooden.. almost the female version of Keanu Reeves. Though much less dopey, of course.
-
"Sarlet." I'm not sure what a "stalet" is.
-
I saw the trailer for The Day the Earth Stood Still yesterday. Does anyone else laugh when he answers "are you in pain" by saying "my BODY does". And then when they ask he is human and he says "my BODY is". YOU should let me go. If the earth dies, YOU die. If YOU die, the earth lives. Okay scratch that. At least Keanu Reeves is entertaining on some level. Natalie Portman on the other hand is just boring.
-
She IS Jessica Harper! In fact, let's do a remake of INSERTS with Brad Pitt and Ellen Page.
-
Seriously, I'm not opposed to remaking movies; even good ones. But the thing that makes Suspira a classic are the nuances (lighting, score, pacing, general ambiance) which the remake, however well-intentioned and even well made, will never be able to recapture. Its too specific to a certain time, place, and people. You remake a movie to take a story or scenario someplace new... but story is the last reason anyone likes Suspiria. Why try to re-film a story which was never all that great (or even sensical) to begin with? They have to know they're not going to be able to recapture the nuance and magic of the original. I guess if they really focused on fleshing out the story and making it a better one to base a new film on, I could see it working... but then why call it "Suspiria"?
-
went to my high school.she was tiny and very attractive.thats all i got for this one.
-
after hearing so much buzz from people I knew about Suspiria, I watched it and hated it. I thought it was strung out, had lousy acting and just plain boring. However if Green can make it exciting, with Portman as the lead, it HAS to be better than the original. Hwo about they stop with the remakes though. We didnt have remake/retelling fever 10-15 years ago and hollywood did fine. Cant people think of original ideas anymore?
-
Hell, its not like they can possibly think they'll make bank simply by name-checking the title "Suspiria"... great as it is, its much less-seen and less known (in the larger culture, anyway) than, for instance, "Texas Chainsaw"... something that they would be able to sell the name for. So, to return to the title of my previous post... yeah, why would they make this? It seems like a terrible idea artistically AND financially! Portman would be kind of good for this if she'd remember to act once in awhile (she does have the body for it... meaning I think she could be convincing as a dancer). Although if they want to stick to the spirit of Argento films, they'll want her typical wooden performance.
-
It was attached to "The Incredible Melting Man" when I saw it in the theater.
Likewise, Jessica Harper was also in "Phantom of the Paradise" which could use a remake.
-
The film could still suck balls, but it will most definitely suck less balls.
This is a universal rule:
Film
- SJP
+ Portman
= Better Film -
What a horrible idea this is. Suspiria is right up there with Texas Chain Saw Massacre as one of the great lightning-in-a-bottle films of all time. The original is good for a shitload of reasons but one of them is that you don't really like or even give a shit about the main girl.
-
hate all remakes stop making them PLEASE for the love of GOD!
-
Don't touch suspiria, but please remake La Terza Madre which was a crappy way to end the Three Mothers trilogy.
-
I love asking people if they have seen it or not. Now it's over. Someone should compile a list of horror movies that HAVEN'T been remade yet. Chucky, the Changeling, what else?
Oh, and Suspiria doesn't have ONE of the greatest horror movie soundtracks, it's easily the greatest. It is one of the greatest movie soundtracks in general. -
You know, SUSPIRIA is an absolute favorite of mine, and you'd think I'd be against it, but I'm only against studio enforced remakes. This one seems interesting. And Natalie Portman as Suzy Banion (or whoever the lead character is called in this one) is pretty damn perfect. I mean, she used to do ballet if I recall (or dreamt) correctly.
-
Why is the Baby Boomer generation constantly trying to resell our childhoods to us? Is there no creativity left?
-
arrogant prick from south africa! don't believe a word he says
-
Unnecessary remakes are one thing. But to do your own version of a great director's signature work...
It's not like Suspiria has this great amazing plot that lends itself to different styles! Argento's classic is an exercise in style and atmosphere. The opening scene of Jessica Harper walking through the sliding doors at the airport...who can make walking through sliding doors fascinating like that?
I think that Green's a talented fellow, and with Pineapple Express it seems like he's finally found an interesting place for himself as a filmmaker. But I hated when he pillaged Killer of Sheep with George Washington, and to me this is just offensive. When morons like Michael Bay remake Texas Chain Saw, at least people seem to know that it's just Hollywood fucking something up, as usual. But Green being attached means people like Quint are gonna give it a pass, be excited for it? Dear god.
I'd like to say "proove me wrong," but honestly the best thing would be for the whole project to be scrapped. And to all the Natalie Portman enthusiasts out there, all I can say is wouldn't you rather cast somebody who tries to give a performance once in a while? Jesus I thought I couldn't hate this remake more. -
Remake...Lame. Cant Green come up with his own damn horror film? Nope. Hey Im glad the guys doing mainstream stuff. Even though I was never a fan of his other stuff. But also, Portman? Seems kinda old to be going to ballet school. And shes not even old. Just too old to be in ballet school. Dont do it, Green. Don't be the guy who remakes Suspiria.
-
Before we stop giving a shit! And no, half-naked in that shit Wes Anderson movie doesn't count.
-
Natalie Portman can star as a girl who goes to this totally awesome dancing school where all the other girls are so, like jealous of her and her awesome dancing ability.
And then she'll meet this really cool boy who totally saves her life from the bad evil bitchy witches.
And since this is a PG-13 horror world, the first death, so lovingly crafted in the original, will consist of a pretty bland blonde actress stubbing her big toe.
I HATE the idea of a remake so much that I actually switched from being a lurker here to writing a comment.
Balls. -
That is a brilliant suggestion.
And Portman was naked for the short film, which was very disappointing. It was the skinniest I've ever seen her, and it really wasn't flattering. -
Seth Rigan would be better in the Richard Dreyfus Part. But we could cast Naomi Watts as Veronica Cartwright.
-
Suspiria isn't one of those movies that would be blasphemous to remake, as much a I like it in all its Argento strangeness. I'd like to see a lot of elements reused, but this time have a plot that makes more sense. And Portman is a great choice.
-
just check out Woody Allen's possible masterwork "Love and Death" and "Pennies From Heaven"
-
would be as a hit woman in a sequel to "The Professional".
-
to this NOT being made. Not sure how that would work, but I'm in.
Please please please don't muck with Suspiria. -
(and don't say Blair Witch...Mmm Kaay?) no need about remaking the great Suspiria, they can adapt the Anne Rice books about Witches, or what about having an...original idea...?
-
It's hard to remake a movie where even the choice of outmoded film stock was more important than the actual plot. Still, it'll probably mean there'll be a decent DVD of the original put out to cash in, maybe even a newly struck theatrical print - I've been to about 4 or 5 screenings of the Argento movie and they've all been dreadfully maintained prints.
Green should use the opportunity to make his own weirdo stylistic horror under the Suspiria name as a straight remake would be rather pointless. He'd make a good one too, he's a fine director.
As for the music? Could always get Justice involved, they make doomy, prog rocky dance music and are also fans of Goblin - their track Phantom is built around the Tenebrae theme

Logical choice...she is Jessica Harper's clone...check it out!
-
Should get their membership to male society revoked.
-
Was pretty intense. Love what happens to the witch at the end.
-
Speaking of Harper, I'm voting for Kristen Bell to play Phoenix in the POTP remake. Very much hoping Phoenix is an innocent Sweet Lolita-type.
-
you should include at least one image of her so that guys can, you know, enjoy her visage. I agree with whoever said that a Professional sequel is in order. I can just imagine her all done up in tight....oouhhhhhhahhhh
-
remake. Verne Troyer in the Paul Williams role?
-
Was nice to see Spielberg cast her as the mother victim in Minority Report.Didn't he and Lucas and DePalma sit in on each others casting sessions?
-
she peaked at 12 apparently. hot, yes...but thats it.
-
I'm still thinking Swann is gonna be based on Simon Cowell. And I'm tossing in Julian Barratt from "The Mighty Boosh" to play him. Especially since I wanna see Noel Fielding in the title role all visual kei.
