Are The Powers That Be Close To Casting Petersen's CSI Replacement??

Published at:  Aug 06, 2008 10:02:47 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Laurence Fishburne, so great as Ike Turner in WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT? and so...dour...in THE MATRIX films...is in talks to succeed William Petersen in CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION.

He'll play a new character:

Fishburne is being heavily courted to play the new character, described as a doctor/scientist outsider to the CSI unit who has the same genetic profile as a serial killer but hasn't previously acted on any homicidal impulses.

...says THIS ARTICLE in Hollywood Reporter.

I've never really been into CSI at all, but Fishburne's character sounds like it could by fun/interesting.

    Serial Killer

    by enderandrew

I've long said the show should end with Grissom turning into a killer. You spend years trying to get in the head of a killer, and at some point you have to empathize a bit. Mix in that he would be about to out-smart and out-CSI any CSI, mixed with his love interest Sara (presuming she came back for the end) having to investigate the man she's sleeping with, etc.

It seems like the perfect end for the series.

Or they could just cancel the show

    by big jim

I've always liked CSI but I haven't much enjoyed the Peterson-lite episodes. Anyone catch that two-parter that revolved around Warwick Brown's character and the dead stripper. Second part was mediocre but the first part was the worst hour of television I have seen in years. Just a terrible episode. Much like the one from a season or two ago that was all about Jim Brass. Really, who was clamoring for a Jim Brass-centric episode?

    Larry Fishburne, actor emeritus

    by mullah omar

The guy has done so much good work for so long that I guess it makes sense to take an easy TV gig and let the cash roll in. This should be like a sabbatical for him before he eventually moves into old-guy roles in films.

Here's why he is being courted

    by arcadiands

he is actually the same exact actor as Peterson, only black. His line delivery, his near-monotone monologues and rants: same as Peterson's. It would allow the show to continue to follow the same formula despite losing its leading character.

Agreed on some of the 'non-Peterson' shows

    by arcadiands

but others have been good. I liked the Jim Brass episodes. A good character actor in a good role. He's 'old school Vegas police' but doesnt play it bold and brave - he's just a guy nearing retirement who wants to keep streets clean and duck bullets. The drama around him shooting another cop was among the best television ever. What a GREAT ending that storyline had, as well. One of the best episodes of the series.
And I'll miss the Warwick character - he brought a lot of funk to the show that would otherwise be a starchy cop drama about people in lab coats. I've missed a few seasons now (busy busy) but understand he's off to prison for killing a crime boss or something?
anyway, Fisburne sounds like to me like they're trying to replace both Warwick AND Peterson at the same time.
I'll tell you what shows were horribly bad - the stupid Tarantino 2-parter about the CIS kidnapped in a glass coffin underground. That was lame TV.

I'm pretty sure the Brass-centric episode Big Jim is referring to is the one where he went to LA to find his daughter, which was a mediocre episode at best.

Incidentally, Warwick is dead, not in jail. He was accused of killing a crime boss, was absolved of blame by the CSI team, and then was killed by a relatively high-up character in the show who was apparently in cahoots with organizaed crime.

You're not wrong about that Brass two-parter. Better than most crime movies of the past few years.

Best episode ever (and there are a lot to choose from) was Monster in the Box, with the team accidentally serving up a cop to the Miniature Killer, and Harry Groener (The Mayor!) being kinda sleazy and yet ultimately innocent.

Cannot wait for some Morpheus in my CSI.

This is nothing more than tame, and thus lame, procederal version of Dexter. If you want to see what CIS would look like if Gill was a serial killer check out Dexter. Not the lame editied version they showed on CBS but go and rent the actual Showtime version on DVD and watch 3 episodes. You'll get hooked and do a marathon then rent Season 2 and repeat just like i did.

I meant. I did enjoy the one where he shot the cop. But that one involved most everyone else on the show. The daughter one had him and Warwick, and I think that's it for the regulars. I get that they want a break now and again, but all at the same time? What keeps bringing me back to CSI is the fun, tongue-in-cheek episodes. Like the one they did last season with Hodges' boardgame where the scenarios had his colleagues being killed by a murderer in the lab. Also really enjoyed the wedding one with different perspectives. The show doesn't take itself all that seriously which is why I hated the Warwick dead stripper episode. It was way too heavy-handed and felt like it belonged more as a CSI Miami episode. Now there's a show that takes itself much too seriously, which is why I stopped watching somewhere in season 3.

The only way to end the show

    by dmann

Is to make Grissom finally have to admit that he was once the star investigator in the Behavioral Sciences Unit at Quantico, after being carved up by a particularly dangerous serial killer, he left the unit, spending his time fishing on a boat with his lovely wife and son. Later, he was drawn back in when a new killer was stalking families, only to have his own family taken hostage by the madman. He saved them, but the strain on the marriage was too much, his wife left him with his son, and when the killer who carved him eventually escaped, he went into witness protection, changing his name from Will Graham to Gil Grissom, the first names even sound similar enough that he could react to them with the hearing loss he incurred in his climactic fight with Francis Dolarhyde, the Red Dragon killer. The only way to end the show is to have Brian Cox show up as Hannibal fuckin Lecter and gut him once and for all.

I think they set this up as his swan song. One major character dies and he catches him. Realizes he is done with all this shit and goes to fuck Sarah on a regular basis. Fishburne provides the color balance that was disturbed by Gary Dourdan's exit. There are rumors that Dourdan's character could be alive, but I thought they were pretty clear about him getting shot the fuck up.

    by chest_rockwell78

I love CSI. One of the best shows on tv. Consistently good-to-great. Losing Peterson will be a big blow and may signal the downfall of one of my favorite shows, as most of the non-Grissom shows have been so-so at best. However, I loved the "Lab Rats" episode with Wallace Langham's character Hodges (he's been a highlight of the show the last several seasons). Even though I knew it was coming sooner than later, I dreaded the day that Peterson would leave the show. They could've done much worse than Fishburne and I think he'll actually be good. Just won't be the same without William Peterson.
