Are The Powers That Be Close To Casting Petersen's CSI Replacement??
Merrick here...
Laurence Fishburne, so great as Ike Turner in WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT? and so...dour...in THE MATRIX films...is in talks to succeed William Petersen in CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION.
He'll play a new character:
Fishburne is being heavily courted to play the new character, described as a doctor/scientist outsider to the CSI unit who has the same genetic profile as a serial killer but hasn't previously acted on any homicidal impulses.
...says THIS ARTICLE in Hollywood Reporter.
I've never really been into CSI at all, but Fishburne's character sounds like it could by fun/interesting.

That's an upgrade.
-
WTF? Am I missing something here?
-
Wtf? What does that even mean? He has a twin who's a serial killer? Someone want to explain?
-
I've long said the show should end with Grissom turning into a killer. You spend years trying to get in the head of a killer, and at some point you have to empathize a bit. Mix in that he would be about to out-smart and out-CSI any CSI, mixed with his love interest Sara (presuming she came back for the end) having to investigate the man she's sleeping with, etc.
It seems like the perfect end for the series. -
I've always liked CSI but I haven't much enjoyed the Peterson-lite episodes. Anyone catch that two-parter that revolved around Warwick Brown's character and the dead stripper. Second part was mediocre but the first part was the worst hour of television I have seen in years. Just a terrible episode. Much like the one from a season or two ago that was all about Jim Brass. Really, who was clamoring for a Jim Brass-centric episode?

no, Fishburne's character sounds like a lame version of Dexter.
Fishburne's better than this drivel. -
Although since I have no idea what happened with that storyline, it's possible that character is dead or in jail or something.
-
The guy has done so much good work for so long that I guess it makes sense to take an easy TV gig and let the cash roll in. This should be like a sabbatical for him before he eventually moves into old-guy roles in films.
-
he is actually the same exact actor as Peterson, only black. His line delivery, his near-monotone monologues and rants: same as Peterson's. It would allow the show to continue to follow the same formula despite losing its leading character.
-
but others have been good. I liked the Jim Brass episodes. A good character actor in a good role. He's 'old school Vegas police' but doesnt play it bold and brave - he's just a guy nearing retirement who wants to keep streets clean and duck bullets. The drama around him shooting another cop was among the best television ever. What a GREAT ending that storyline had, as well. One of the best episodes of the series.
And I'll miss the Warwick character - he brought a lot of funk to the show that would otherwise be a starchy cop drama about people in lab coats. I've missed a few seasons now (busy busy) but understand he's off to prison for killing a crime boss or something?
anyway, Fisburne sounds like to me like they're trying to replace both Warwick AND Peterson at the same time.
I'll tell you what shows were horribly bad - the stupid Tarantino 2-parter about the CIS kidnapped in a glass coffin underground. That was lame TV. -
That sucks. What would be better would be Fishburn replacing that great syphilitic douchebag of a ginger kid preening around on CSI:Miami.
-
His storyline was a very good one though.
-
Bring in Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish as two new team members! It'll stretch out the lifespan of the series for another ten years! Really! Trust me on this one guys!
-
Didn't TV Guide say Kurt Russell was on the short list, along with Fishburne and John Malkovich? I was hoping for Russell. Might have gotten me to watch regularly again.
-
I'm pretty sure the Brass-centric episode Big Jim is referring to is the one where he went to LA to find his daughter, which was a mediocre episode at best.
Incidentally, Warwick is dead, not in jail. He was accused of killing a crime boss, was absolved of blame by the CSI team, and then was killed by a relatively high-up character in the show who was apparently in cahoots with organizaed crime. -
You're not wrong about that Brass two-parter. Better than most crime movies of the past few years.
Best episode ever (and there are a lot to choose from) was Monster in the Box, with the team accidentally serving up a cop to the Miniature Killer, and Harry Groener (The Mayor!) being kinda sleazy and yet ultimately innocent.
Cannot wait for some Morpheus in my CSI. -
The problem with this character is it sounds too much like what they did with Liev. Why can't Fishburne just be a good cop? They have to make him a serial killer too?
-
I agree with this decision, it's probably easier to make him a new character than explain why Gil Grisson is suddenly a big black man.
-
"In China, when you get to the airport everyone be talking in American slang. "
-
I've thought the same thing about the finale and/or the final season. Grissom should be a killer and the team should have to catch him and see if they can outwit the master. And on another note, this sounds like black Dexter.
-
Damn, you all beat me to the punch. Grissom as a killer is a stupid idea. You should punch yourself in the face for even thinking it.
-
This is nothing more than tame, and thus lame, procederal version of Dexter. If you want to see what CIS would look like if Gill was a serial killer check out Dexter. Not the lame editied version they showed on CBS but go and rent the actual Showtime version on DVD and watch 3 episodes. You'll get hooked and do a marathon then rent Season 2 and repeat just like i did.
-
I think Fishburne should just wher his Cowboy Curtis outfit and hire Jambi and Chairy to work in the lab...Mecca lecca hi, mecca hiney ho
-
I think they mean he has XYY chromosome syndrome (http://tinyurl.com/2pfx7c), except of course it's a myth that XYY is proof of deviant or dangerous behaviour. Still, it could be an interesting approach...
-
Bring him back. I don't care he died
-
There, I said it. You all know it's true. Why this show is so popular is absolutely beyond comprehension.
-
CSI is all about big freakish hair . Fishburne would need to go an afro.
-
Nowadays even the most prominent A-list, stick up their ass indie film types are doing shtick on primetime.
-
With Russell I would even start watching CSI.
-
I meant. I did enjoy the one where he shot the cop. But that one involved most everyone else on the show. The daughter one had him and Warwick, and I think that's it for the regulars. I get that they want a break now and again, but all at the same time? What keeps bringing me back to CSI is the fun, tongue-in-cheek episodes. Like the one they did last season with Hodges' boardgame where the scenarios had his colleagues being killed by a murderer in the lab. Also really enjoyed the wedding one with different perspectives. The show doesn't take itself all that seriously which is why I hated the Warwick dead stripper episode. It was way too heavy-handed and felt like it belonged more as a CSI Miami episode. Now there's a show that takes itself much too seriously, which is why I stopped watching somewhere in season 3.
-
makes more sense if you leave off the genetics part. Maybe someone goofed.
-
every grusome murder scene he'd be laughing
-
"I agree with this decision, it's probably easier to make him a new character than explain why Gil Grisson is suddenly a big black man." is without a doubt one of the funniest things I have ever read in a talk back. I literally laughed out loud.
-
This sounds good. And will fill the sorely needed token spot of course. If he does start slaughtering people they'll have to call him the Cowboy Curtis Killer.
-
That would be an awsome twist and could actually make the show interesting again.
-
DOOM knows the only way to court Fishburne is to do so heavily!
-
Or get the guys that replaced Bo and Luke on the Dukes of Hazzard. Or let a great show die with some dignity.
-
I haven't seen the show in a few years, though I do actually enjoy it whenever I check it out. Its nice to have a good, quality procedural on whenever I'm in the mood for some filler. But Peterson really is the guy who makes this show worth watching (never even bothered with the spinoffs), what's the deal?
-
Is to make Grissom finally have to admit that he was once the star investigator in the Behavioral Sciences Unit at Quantico, after being carved up by a particularly dangerous serial killer, he left the unit, spending his time fishing on a boat with his lovely wife and son. Later, he was drawn back in when a new killer was stalking families, only to have his own family taken hostage by the madman. He saved them, but the strain on the marriage was too much, his wife left him with his son, and when the killer who carved him eventually escaped, he went into witness protection, changing his name from Will Graham to Gil Grissom, the first names even sound similar enough that he could react to them with the hearing loss he incurred in his climactic fight with Francis Dolarhyde, the Red Dragon killer. The only way to end the show is to have Brian Cox show up as Hannibal fuckin Lecter and gut him once and for all.
-
becoming a cliche? Like the police captain of old. This sounds like Dennis Haysbert's role in The Unit.
-
Again....you have to interject your fucking commentary on subjects you know nothing about. Why do you always get to report on the shit you don't know anything about? Or is it that you simply don't know shit about shit? Either way, you are firmly cementing yourself as the "contributor" at AICN who is quite simply, the most undewhelming key poker.
-
The could say that Liev Schreiber's Keppler character had a twin brother who had amnesia and forgot that he had a twin brother who got killed off but now he remembered after being hit in the head again so ... or has this already been done?
-
TV and movie industry morons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brains half-eaten by the HI Vi, that's your problem. -
...when Petersen leaves, but Caruso stays.
-
Wasn't there a rumor that Malkatraz was also meant to be on the show? Coulda sworn I heard that somewhere......
-
It's easily the best show on television. And I'm not talking geeky stuff (god knows I love Venture Bros and Supernatural, but Dexter is something people - normal people will talk for years) But as in scripted television. You just can't beat Dexter. It's not even fair to other shows. That said, I would watch a CSI crossover.
-
but maybe they should consider winding it down.
-
Because for some inexplicable reason they put a guy who avoids critically acclaimed series in favor of reality shows in charge of coaxial coverage.
-
Yeah I read about Kurt Russell maybe getting the CSI gig somewhere, but alas its not to be. Too bad that woulda been so cool...fuckin Snake CSI yeah...lol. Anyway CSI is almost done...and it has been really bad the last few years too...dull and cases that are silly and the whole miniature model killer...umm yeah ok...seen it before in countless horror flicks. Oh well if I want top notch crime tv I will stick with my old Homicide:Life on the Streets dvds....now that was good shit.
-
He should stay away for CSI while it's circling the drain. You're better than this Cowboy Curtis!!!!!
-
This type of shit is why I read Talkbacks.
-
I'm just saying, is all...
-
Petersen is a fucking maniac in that movie.
-
He didnt do anything decent in this Millenium. What was that last cool thing he did 10 years ago? eeeeeeeehhhh Matrix?
Take the Job Fish!! I will watch! Love CSI Vegas. CSI New York is ok. CSI Miami sucks, but really!!! -
Would he offer his victems the red pill or the blue pill??
-
What would rock is if his last episode was one in which Grissom's fellow CSIs investigate his death. That would make some strong scenes in which Peterson is the vic. Can't wait for the scene in which they peel Grissom's skin off of his skull!!!!
-
when a guy like Lawrence Fishburne has to do a slowly dying show like CSI.. not that I care, so long as he's not replacing Mariska Hargitay on Law&Order:SVU.
-
CSI Blows Goats... i liked it for about 10 seconds until i realized that Batman himself doesnt even have access to all the crime solving tech they do in the show... fucking lame
-
I think they set this up as his swan song. One major character dies and he catches him. Realizes he is done with all this shit and goes to fuck Sarah on a regular basis. Fishburne provides the color balance that was disturbed by Gary Dourdan's exit. There are rumors that Dourdan's character could be alive, but I thought they were pretty clear about him getting shot the fuck up.
-
It is good to have at least one additional show where there is a super smart guy who knows it all. All SCIs have a super smart white guy who always has the answers. Aside from the Unit there is no show where there is a super smart black man running things.
I say go for it. -
Why not get her to be on it too or maybe Fishburns wife...Gina Torres.
-
In all of your obscene incarnations...
-
I love CSI. One of the best shows on tv. Consistently good-to-great. Losing Peterson will be a big blow and may signal the downfall of one of my favorite shows, as most of the non-Grissom shows have been so-so at best. However, I loved the "Lab Rats" episode with Wallace Langham's character Hodges (he's been a highlight of the show the last several seasons). Even though I knew it was coming sooner than later, I dreaded the day that Peterson would leave the show. They could've done much worse than Fishburne and I think he'll actually be good. Just won't be the same without William Peterson.
