Concept Art For Stuart Beattie's HALO: THE FALL OF REACH Movie Project Hits The Nets!!

Published at:  Aug 05, 2008 8:25:12 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Latino Review has a look at concept art developed as part of a new HALO movie presentation.

This is a different project than the Peter Jackson-produced film we've heard about in the past - that project is pretty much dead due to a variety of factors.

The HALO movie we're talking about in this instance involves a spec script by Stuart Beattie ( G.I. JOE, COLLATERAL, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT ). It's an adaptation of Eric Nylund's novel HALO: THE FALL OF REACH (available HERE), which is a prequel to the game series.

Seems the script is being shoped around alongside accompanying media..of which this art is a sampling. Seems Latino Review will be posting a new concept piece every week for the next five weeks, so be sure to check back.

Collateral was a great movie due to Michael Mann and partially due to Beattie's script. I'm skeptical on Joe and frankly 30 Days of Night was a great premise made into a flat and unentertaining movie. Really how did that flick get fucked up so badly. Vampires in Alaska!!!! That movie really sucked balls even as a simple genre B film.

    by silentp

why people want a Half Life movie. The storytelling in the games is extremely passive, and works brilliantly because it puts you in the shoes of the main character. I love the Half-Life games, but the only movie version I'd be interested in is a side-story that's part of the official canon -- not about Gordon Freeman, but about someone else, revealing more of the background story of the HL universe. A look at another part of the universe that we don't see in the games because we're limited to Gordon's perspective, I mean. But I suspect that will not happen.

    Collateral had a terrible script

    by silentp

it was saved by the direction and the acting, and was actually a really enjoyable movie, but things like the taxi driver (spoiler) killing the professional killer are retarded, and I blame them entirely on the writer. I also hear 30 Days of Night is pretty bad, and I don't know what to think of G.I. Joe yet, but I doubt it's going to be amazing script-wise. So this is probably not good news. On the other hand, I thought the Halo story was pretty bad in every game but 2, and yet people lap it up for some reason (and think 2 is the worst, strangely), so maybe it's only bad news for me.

    The Fuss about Halo...

    by laughing irishman

...I being a computer gamer mostly, was into Quake 1, Unreal, Half-Life 1 and what not. First Person Shooters on consoles for a time were shit. Complete utter shit. Like a Uwe Bowel movie.

However, Halo came along, and made an actual epic storyline for a first person shooter. The game play was great and the story was great.

Now, with that said, the book HALO: Fall of the Reach was wonderfully written. It was written in the vane of Enders Game, a book which should most definately be made into a movie.

Halo can only be appreciated if you play through the games one at a time. They build upon each other and end up having some great plot twists throughout.

    and lastly, for the record:

Until i finally got a XBOX in 2006, I hated HALO. (As said, i was a PC Gamer and was also devoted to PS2 RPGS)

just imagine the story... "super physics experiments goes wrong (particle accelerator on HL1), portal to other dimension opens (Xen), monsters come thru it (Vortigans), everyone dies, only one survivor (Freeman), government tries to cover it up
yep.......as good as Half Life is...now it will sound like its a ripoff of the DOOM movie, then again, HL could be the chance to undo the damage done by that piece of crap

Or whatever that dudes name is sounds like he had the right idea. I could care less about the quality of Halo as a game. 1st person shooters were never my thing. I just think a good post-apocalyptic shit storm, not tied to the mythos of Terminator, Star Whatever, or AvP would be refreshing. Even if it is based on a video game, there is a kernel of original idea that could spark something cool. These pathetic "concept" pics don't give me that feel.

    by tehdude

The only reason I think that Halo gives movie execs collective hard-ons is because of the revenue it has generated. So script writers/producers want a piece of the action 'cause of the fat payday. As a universe/story it is BLAND. Dull Characters, (only the arbiter was interesting imo) and average story. I think it only took on some weight via the Halo novels, but I haven't read them.

    Bad Game, Great Novel

    by fatrat

Eric Nylund's Halo: The Fall of Reach would be a great movie. Especially since the artifact isn't in the novel until the last page. It's a great setting for a full apocalyptic, blow everything up, movie. If a Halo movie has to get made, I hope this is it.

    The problem with Halo...

    by seanny_d

Don't get me wrong, I love all three Halo games and have read all but one of the novels. The issue that exists is a horrible lack of character. You, the Master Chief, has no motivation beyond "Protect the world." His sole dedication is that which he was ostensibly brainwashed to feel. Now, I love the concept of the Master Chief character, but in a cinematic version, he doesn't change. He plods through the games, destroying aliens, and doesn't learn anything about himself, and therefore, as the main character of the movie, that could cause some serious suffering in quality. Now, if Beattie is taking Fall of Reach, fleshing out John-117 a little bit more, that on the other hand could be incredibly interesting. Also, some intriguing themes are present within the games that under a talented artist could give some serious weight to the film(s). I REALLY want to see a Halo movie, I just want to see it done right (and that doesn't mean a complete copy of the game and never showing Master Chief's face. He's your main character. And a human. Let's take his helmet off sometimes, please.)

    by caerdwyn

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Waaaay back in the day, when Halo was first shown at a Macworld convention, it was shown as being an open-field, large scale FPS. Air and ground combat, interior battles, and basically it had an "RTS as FPS" feel and promised to be great. Then Bungie was acquired by MS and it went to pot. All the action was squeezed into tiny little levels, and half the game was a retread of itself. Halo 2 made it a little more polished, but the scale still wasn't there. It felt dumbed down, not to mention that multiplayer deathmatch was more important to the game, er, X-Box Live, by now. Halo 3.. more of the same, nothing fresh.

It's a good IP, but the FPS games haven't taken full advantage of it. It's no more interesting than Gears of War or Unreal Tournament... fairly generic first-person shooter material.

I realize this is just "concept art," but it looks really bland and uninspired. The game is not that good (it just gained popularity because the console-only owners were so far behind what the PC gamers were doing) and the story was even worse. Looking at this current art, I am thinking direct to DVD...

I don't know. Let's see, take a phenomenal script, a director who clearly has the vision (and ability to pull it off) to make the kind of movie HALO deserves to be, and a producer who takes it seriously, and then just chuck it and make another half-ass quick-cash disaster that will leave the fucking suits saying "See, that's why we don't greenlight these projects- they always end up being horrendous flops." Extremely overrated game. Too simplistic.

    by iamjack'suserid

I tried to beat the 1st one several times and just couldn't - way to limited, boring, and unoriginal. Bought the 3rd one for 360 and I played maybe half-way, but the same thing happened. Sure, the colors are pretty, but Master Chief is too limited. No aiming down the sights, no alternate weapons, very limited weapon selection and what weapons are out there are pretty crappy and uninspired. Go here and do this and then go there and do that. Kill creatures and repeat. Sure the MP can be fun...for all of 10 minutes. Much prefer Half-Life for SP and Battlefield for MP. Half-Life>>>>>>>>Halo, Gordon>>>>>>>>>Master Chief.

    by mefrog

Storywise, it's really not much. Yeah, the game is more epic and feels more cinematic than other video games of its kind but that kind of cinema translated onto the screen is... very meh. Gameplaywise, I agree it's incredibly limited. There's the sniping level, the vehicle level, the assault rifle level and that's it. No room for creativity, unlike something like Bioshock.

I won't deny though that I had a BLAST doing Halo 2 multiplayer but when 3 rolled around it just kind of... fizzled...

If they have some talent working on it. They won't though. I don't care if sci-fi is dead, money is not. The execs remember how big these games were and want those lines in front of theaters. So they will push this to get made, but that might mean Bret Ratner or someone will be called in to just get it done.

    by ccchhhrrriiisssm

...during its opening weekend? I think that there is a great potential for a HALO film trilogy. Yes, the game is somewhat simplistic in play. However, that might be the very reason that it would translate well to the Silver Screen. Doom, Final Fantasy, etc... -- they were quite complicated. HALO is an epic story that didn't necessitate really deep thinking. I don't think that anyone can argue with the success of the HALO series of games. The first story arc was incredible. I'm not saying that it would be my FAVORITE sci-fi film. However, there is a potential blockbuster here. There is enough of a fan base...and enough of a curiosity from people who have heard of HALO but have no idea what it means -- that a film could generate quite a bit of revenue. I hope they do it...and do it well.

Your wrong with the grrrr! caerdwyn

    by connor187

So Halo wasnt an open-field, large scale FPS?...really? are you sure you even played the game? The level Attack on the control room perhaps? No? Look its like this Halo offered a concept completely new to the FPS genre, the concept of war! No game before it let you think you were part of a war, simple as that. I remember playing it and completely loosing myself in it. It was the first game that actually made me care for my A.I controled comrades, I felt for them when they got blown to pieces I really did. I laughed out loud when they cracked jokes, I felt an adrenaline boost when I stormed a beach with them as they let out out battle crys, I really did. An example, Iam driving a Warthog across an icey plain with two fellow marines. Suddenly I see a battle in the distance between two different spieces of aliens. I stop on a rise to watch the conflict unfold, suddenly one of banshee's that is circling the battle spots me and my crew. Shit! I have to think fast, I have to get the fuck out of here. I hit the gas and we start to drive away. Ive turned away from the conflict when one of my marines screams out "INCOMING" my heart begins to beat fast as I try my hardest to get us to safety. The marine maning the gun on the back is trying his hardest to keep the following Banshee at bay. Then it happens, the Banshee that spotted us fires a plasma shot which just hits ur on the right rear wing of the Warthog, my marines let out screams as we flip over and roll to halt. Shit! I think to myself were in no mans land, were on the edge of a battle we didnt want to be part of. Our Warthog is out of action but the Banshee dose not let up. What do I do I ask myself as some of the aliens from the battle notice us and turn their fire on us. I run towars the upturned Warthog to flip it back over, as I do I here another scream as one of my marines is killed, BASTARDS! I again think to myself. I get back into the Warthog, Iam now taking fire from all directions as I wait for my last marine join me and man the gun on the back. The poor bastard is stuck, he is talking heavy fire, I decide to mount a rescue opperation. I drive towards him, just before I can get to him the Banshee fires a fatal shot that kills him, "YOU DIRTY FUCKING BASTARDS" I actually shout out loud. Iam now alone, I dont know what to do. I decide to save myself, I decide not to stand my ground and fight for my fallen comrades. I finaly get away from the battle with my armor beeping and flashing. We just lost the battle but the war was still to be won and Iam the only hope.
Now that might sound like a good screenplay for a movie but do you know what? Thats Halo, thats what happened when I played it. And when I tried it again it was completly different. So you can keep your Half Lifes and your Quakes but seriously, stop wasting your and more importantly our time by coming on here with your views about a game you clearly havnt even played.
    Laterz.

Half Life is the only modern gaming property worth turning into a movie. It's one of the only recent games that isn't a series of completely Hollywood derivative action sequences strung together into a "story". The HL story was originally based on early '90s internet UFO folklore(Dulce etc) that someone could use as a starting point for making a fantastic film.

Microsoft only decided to invest in South Africa in 2006 and that's when I got my Halo fix when 3 came out. I really did enjoy the game although I never had anything close to what you described. COD4 yes, Halo no.... But it could be that I wasn't infested enough into the whole Halo universe. I still have it for my 360 so maybe I should replay it. I'm certainly bored of GTAIV already....

First of all, you're a fuckbucket for actually using the word "laterz". That right there would be an appropriate place for me to stop. Second, you're describing the game like it's some open-ended sandbox type game. Have you actually played the game? Probably not, but it's very limited and pretty much a "go from point A to point B" game. That overdone scenario you novelize is pretty generic, and can happen in ANY game. More interesting things happened to me in STALKER in the first few minutes than ALL of Halo. Basically, you just said: "We came upon an enemy and he started attacking us." Well, let me just say HOLY FUCKING WOW! What a twist! I find it ironic that you would berate us for talking about Halo and then accusing us of not playing it when it is quite obvious we have. I can safely bet you're one of these fratboy VG'ers that plays only the popular games and then goes out every year to buy the same version of Madden over and over and over. So a word to the wise: actually play something other than popular crap and maybe you're opinion will be something other than crap. Perhaps Half-Life is too much for your tiny brain to grasp? Oh, and Quake hasn't been relevant in a while.

    Halo, Half Life, BioShock, MGS

    by halberd

Those are games that not only deserve film adaptations, but are DESTINED for it. They have the ingredients: strong fanbases, epic-scale conspiracy-driven story arcs, and the explosive content for an unprecedented amount of moneyshots (Tony Scott/Michael Bay for MGS?). So long as Hollywood puts heavyweight caliber people behind them... that is all I ask. Or perhaps in the near future maybe I could even tackle one of those franchises in some shape or form. Anyone else an aspiring filmmaker here? Because this is what drives/vexes me... the fact that some serious, landmark games aren't even close to adaptation/pre-production talks yet. I've played them all, with the exception to the additional episode installments for HL2. But the experiences make me all sappy feelgood in the end, which is a hell of a sensation. Only then did I realize it is justified that they are married with the silver screen, Uwe Bolle NOT included. We need to launch that detrimental grundlefuck into the cosmos, like we did to Apocalypse in the Good Vs. Evil saga (animated series). One hell of a segue, but Halo, HL, BioShock and MGS are franchises just waiting to expand towards the red carpet... and I can't wait.

    What's with the Halo-haters?

    by halberd

Sure the campaign is nothing stellar at this point, but cinematic and ambitious nonetheless, compounded by the mastery of composer Martin O'Donnell (Did anyone play Myth at all? Epic much?). But did you guys even play multiplayer? Maybe it was either genuinely sub-par in your eyes or you plain just weren't good at it, but it's still fun as ever. Old schoolers would know - B X B ftw. And Halo 3? Forget about it... that robbed hours of my life with its online community... I haven't played in a couple months but as a Level 40 Commander (if I remember right) to say the game is competitively fun as fucK is an understatement.

    Listen to yourself...

    by connor187

I never once said it was an open sandbox type game so I dont know were you got that one from. I was simply explaining one of my experiences I had with the game. Yes its basically a get from point A to point B game, no doubt. But to me its all about what happens during that process. I got Halo with the Xbox on launch day I didnt buy into the hype because to tell you the truth I knew fuck all about it. Ive never been a pc gamer Ive always had consoles and I waited along time for a FPS that matched the fun of Goldeneye/Perfect Dark. So seriously stop with your american shit like fratboy etc, because Iam not interested. And by the way STALKER! seriously? Laterz!....ahem!

    by iamjack'suserid

Then perhaps you should stop right there, jimmy_009. Oh, but unfortunately for you you didn't! Oh well for you! And now back to my favorite pop-culture whore connor187. I'm glad to see my estimate of you was right on. I imagine you never even played STALKER as you are only concerned with falling in with the sheep and not actually having tastes of your own. See, unlike yourself, I have actually played the game I am ridiculing. And ridiculing it for good reason. You describing some lame event where some enemies attacked you -- again, FUCKING WOW -- does nothing at all. Try STALKER, where animals actually hunt and attack each other. Where you can lead people chasing you into a den of predators and watch them get attacked. Where you can join up with a warring faction as they infiltrate a base and take it over. Or you don't have to do any of these things. To summarize, you have ass tastes in video games, and you probably have similar tastes in all other things. Goldeneye was a good game, but Jesus Christ, that was over a decade ago! No wonder you mentioned Quake since that's probably considered modern to you.

Halo - one very overrated franchise

    by wash

Derivative story, decent but repetitive single-player, WAY overrated multiplayer. But the marketing to fanboys is brilliant, I will give it that.

It looks like they modded homeworld so that a battlecruiser was the pillar of autumn and the fighters are spartans.

Videogame sales dont equal BO #'s

    by phategod2

Videogames cost about six times as much as Movie Tickets So 150 million in videogame sales translates to 25 million in the Box office.

That was the lamest retort I've ever read on here. Boy you sure put me in my place!!! Luckily I don't have to care about the asinine exchanges you write paragraphs over. I was merely commenting on your first line, the one that marked you as a total loser and hypocrite. What your thoughts are on Halo couldn't interest me less.

    Halo sucks...

    by thewaqman

Just some generic space shooter that somehow caught on with so many people. The multiplayer was fun...but still does that mean this shit deserves a movie? I'm glad its on hiatus.

    I played Halo.

    by redkamel

I didnt get the story, the parts I did get kind of sucked and reminded me of any MacGuffin game. Everyone I know only plays it for the online part.

Half Life, MGS 3 or 4, Crysis would make good movies, if they had justice done to them like the current crop of superhero movies. too bad historically video game movies have sucked. I liked Mortal Kombat, it was a like a DTV.

Why a Halo movie with no fucking Halos in it?!!

    by tallboy66

I've never read Fall of Reach, but Master Chief didn't find a Halo till they ran into it, and the series is called Halo, so put some gat-damn Halo's in it. Please!

the Halo games had a story?

    by stickmangrit

dude, i've played those, they're multi-only. yeah, bungie started making a SP campaign, but then realized it was turning into a shitty cross between Aliens and Starship Troopers.

always got a kick out of using that line on the fanboys babbling on about how Halo 3 would end when i worked at EB. Halo is horrifically over-rated. the only real contribution it ever made to videogames was creating a tight and functional console FPS control scheme. now, when H:CE came out, that was pretty god damned revolutionary, but after three iterations of the same goddamned game(one of which decided to ship with a broken cutscene engine) complete with Alien 3 style bait-and-switch for part two, i'm really quite sick of this whole franchise.

and as for the comparison to FF7, Halo doesn't deserve to lick that game's boots. FF7, whilst not the best in the series, was still a damn good excercise in world building and storytelling, complete with a brilliant futuristic take on the established FF universes. a landmark game in every sense, as opposed to Halo, which was one good game that kept getting re-released with shiny new graphics, kinda like Star Wars.

and as for Fall of Reach

    by stickmangrit

if it's good enough dolled up in machismo frat-boy fantasy, why the fuck isn't Ender's Game good enough to get made with Wolfgang behind it?
